The use of Electronic cigarettes (E-cigarettes) has considerably expanded especially among adults. This paper highlights the behavior regarding E-cigarettes uses among adult males in Jordan. Moreover, we studied the electronic cigarette devices, the electronic cigarette liquids used in them, and the health-related complaints associated with e-smoking. Among smokers, we studied the association between E-cigarette use and their interest in smoking cessation. A questionnaire-based study regarding electronic cigarette prevalence and awareness among Jordanian individuals was conducted with a total sample size of 1536 participants. The questionnaire was distributed using Facebook and WhatsApp social groups. In this study, we included data of a total of 254 adult male participants after excluding non-E-cigarettes smokers, female smokers, and male smokers younger than 18 years old from the previously published study (Electronic Cigarettes Prevalence and Awareness among Jordanian Individuals) to describe electronic smoking behavior among adult males in Jordan. We described smoking behavior, electronic smoking technologies and materials, source of knowledge, and believe regarding electronic smoking among participants. A total of 254 E-cigarette smokers have participated in this study. 104 participants (40.9%) were found to smoke both traditional and electronic cigarettes, 111 (43.7%) quit traditional cigarette smoking and switched to E-cigarettes, and 39 (15.3%) individuals are exclusively e-smokers. More than half of the participants (n = 144; 56.7%) believe E-smoking is not addictive, and 213 (83.8%) suppose that the overall health effects attributable to E-smoking are less severe and not as serious as those related to traditional smoking. The use of E-cigarettes increased both nationally and globally in the past few years and is considered an emerging modality of smoking among non-smokers. Social media and other internet websites are the main sources of knowledge regarding E-cigarettes. Health-related issues and addiction are thought to be less than traditional smoking in considerable percentages of E-smokers. A more comprehensive conception of E-smoking patterns in Jordan is required to approach this phenomenon. Health authorities in collaboration with governmental policymakers are obligate to adopt strict recommendations to control the promotion of E-smoking through social media and other internet websites to limit its distribution among people especially youths. African Americans in Atlanta, Georgia disproportionately reside in communities with limited access to healthy foods. Collaborations with local corner stores to provide healthy food options have been identified as an evidence-based intervention that could be used to increase food access. This paper describes the community-based participatory approach used to culturally-tailor a Healthy Corner Store Initiative (HCSI) in five Atlanta communities. A mixed method approach (qualitative/quantitative) was utilized. Spatial analysis and an environmental assessment were conducted to locate all corner stores in the partner communities that were listed in a business database. An environmental assessment was conducted at 34 corner stores using a structured log and checklist. Among them, 11 were selected and signed memorandums of understanding to implement the HCSI. A customer intercept survey was administered to 100 African American corner store customers at five of the healthy corner store sites. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze log/checklist and survey data. Corner store customers indicated that they typically purchase snacks, tobacco, and breads, but would purchase certain healthy foods, if offered. They also indicated that freshness of fruits and vegetables and positive relationships with corner store owners would influence healthy food purchases. Findings demonstrate that working collaboratively with community members, researchers and business owners is a critical step in nurturing trust, strengthening credibility, and building partnerships towards increased healthy food access and improved community health. To assess energy drink (ED) consumption, potential ED correlates, and ED-related motivations among a sample of college students to determine differences based on athlete status (student athlete vs. non-athlete). Six hundred and ninety-two college students completed surveys at a large private university in the United States. Participants completed a paper based questionnaire assessing ED and ED-related variables. Over thirty-six percent (197 non-athletes, 58 student athletes) of participants reported ED consumption in the preceding 30 days. Multivariately, there was no difference in ED consumption based on athlete status. Heavy episodic drinking and prescription stimulant misuse were both correlated with increased ED consumption. ED motivations differed based on the frequency of ED consumption. ED use was common among student athletes and non-athletes in our sample. It is important to be aware of the correlation between heavy episodic drinking, prescription stimulant misuse, and ED consumption among college student populations because of the adverse consequences associated with these behaviors. This paper examines the extent to which parent and grandparent smoking influences adolescent smoking and its quantitative implications for tobacco control. It extends similar prior studies by investigating the effects on the probability of becoming a smoker and on the number of cigarettes smoked. Count regressions were used to assess the intergenerational transmission of smoking across three cohabitant generations, simultaneously, using data from the 2010 survey 'Encuesta Estatal Sobre Uso De Drogas en Estudiantes de Enseñanzas Secundarias'. This survey, of 32,234 students, constitutes a representative sample of Spanish students between 14 and 18 years of age. Living with a mother who smokes, a father who smokes, or a grandparent who smokes reduces the odds of being a non-smoker by 36.1 % (OR 0.639), 26.1 % (OR 0.739) and 20.3 % (OR 0.797), respectively. Parental smoking increases cigarette consumption levels among adolescents. Having a cohabitant mother who smokes increases the number of cigarettes smoked by children by around 18.7 % (IRR 1.187), while having a cohabitant father who smokes increases the number by around 12.1 % (IRR 1.121). Estimates support the hypothesis that visibility of smoking among parents and grandparents is a strong predictor of smoking among adolescents. Accordingly, quitting smoking by parents and grandparents before children become adolescents appears to be a powerful means to both reduce smoking rates among adolescents and the number of cigarettes smoked by smokers; such decisions appear to exert a stronger influence on the prevalence of smoking and consumption levels than exposure to smoking prevention campaigns at school. Cervical cancer adversely impacts African American communities. While disparities in incidence remain unclear, communities continue to use forums to increase cervical cancer education. The purpose of this paper is to examine the efficacy of using community forums to increase human papillomavirus vaccine (HPVV) and cervical cancer knowledge in African American communities. This study is a one-group pretest–posttest study design using a 17-item questionnaire to collect data from 412 participants in diverse communities. Our analyses revealed perceived knowledge increased significantly after the forums for African American participants. For African Americans, perceived knowledge prior to the forums was explained by gender, access to care, and trust in clinical trials. After the forum, perceived knowledge was associated with access to care and trust in vaccines. Participants who had health insurance reported higher perceived HPV and cervical cancer knowledge and greater trust in vaccines. This study found community forums that address the cultural and historical context of research mistreatment related to HPVV development and include diverse racial/ethnic representation of stakeholders may be a useful strategy to increase HPVV, and cervical cancer knowledge in African American communities. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected racial and ethnic minority groups in the U.S. Over a 7-week period in late 2020, with funding from the NC Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, the West Greenville Health Council (WGHC), a community-academic, non-profit partnership, engaged and activated a 27-member organizational partnership network for COVID-19 health communication and personal protective equipment (PPE) distribution in African American communities in Eastern North Carolina. Outreach included: local production and dissemination of 10 culturally relevant safety videos, 10 risk, prevention, and safety postcard messages, 3 virtual forums, and PPE kit distribution via the network and their distribution venues. Communication mediums included social media posts (i.e., Facebook and YouTube), network email distribution lists, and postcards distributed along with PPE kits. Outreach activities were evaluated via an online survey, reach of social media posts, and PPE distribution. Working through the organizational network, the WGHC reached a combined total of 30,310 community members with educational materials. Forty-four outreach events were held during this period and over 8000 PPE kits were distributed. The online survey, distributed through the network, yielded more than 400 completed questionnaires. This tool was used to gain insights on community perceptions of COVID-19 safety barriers and media messages. The activation of the network as an approach for rapid response to an emerging public health crisis greatly expanded the reach of the WGHC. The WGHC is working to institutionalize the network to address future emerging health threats, as well as the dissemination of health information more generally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Communities across the United States are increasing efforts to find and count homeless youth. This paper presents findings and lessons learned from a community/academic partnership to count homeless youth and conduct an in depth research survey focused on the health needs of this population. Over a 4 week recruitment period, 632 youth were counted and 420 surveyed. Methodological successes included an extended counting period, broader inclusion criteria to capture those in unstable housing, use of student volunteers in health training programs, recruiting from magnet events for high risk youth, and partnering with community agencies to disseminate findings. Strategies that did not facilitate recruitment included respondent driven sampling, street canvassing beyond known hotspots, and having community agencies lead data collection. Surveying was successful in gathering data on reasons for homelessness, history in public systems of care, mental health history and needs, sexual risk behaviors, health status, and substance use. Youth were successfully surveyed across housing types including shelters or transitional housing (n = 205), those in unstable housing such as doubled up with friends or acquaintances (n = 75), and those who were literally on the streets or living in a place not meant for human habitation (n = 140). Most youth completed the self-report survey and provided detailed information about risk behaviors. Recommendations to combine research data collection with counting are presented. Despite the growing body of evidence demonstrating the positive health effects of the Mediterranean diet, it is not routinely recommended in practice and adherence is low in the general population in Australia. The knowledge-attitude-behaviour model explains how health behaviours are supported through a process of acquiring knowledge, developing attitudes, and forming behaviours. Evidence has suggested that having a high level of nutrition-related knowledge is associated with more positive attitudes, which is directly linked to positive dietary behaviours. However, reports of knowledge and attitudes towards the Mediterranean diet, and how these directly relate to behaviours in older adults, are lacking. This study explored Mediterranean diet-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours among community-dwelling older adults in Australia. Participants were adults aged 55 years and older who completed an online survey that contained three parts: (a) knowledge – Mediterranean Diet Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire (Med-NKQ); (b) nutrition-related attitudes and behaviours, and barriers and enablers to dietary change; (c) demographics. The sample included 61 adults who ranged in age from 55 to 89 years. The overall knowledge score was 30.5 out of a possible 40 points, with 60.7% classified as having a high level of knowledge. Knowledge was lowest for nutrient content and label reading. Attitudes and behaviours were generally positive and were not associated with level of knowledge. The most common barriers to dietary change were perceived cost and lack of knowledge, and motivational factors. There are a number of key gaps in knowledge that should be addressed through targeted educational programs. Strategies and tools to overcome perceived barriers and improve self-efficacy are needed to facilitate positive dietary behaviours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this paper is to examine factors that are associated with tooth loss in older adults living in the San Luis Valley (SLV), Colorado, which is a rural and large geographical area (roughly the size of Connecticut) that has a large population age 60 years or older. Data used in this manuscript were collected as a part of the SLV Community Health Survey. The analyzed sample included 308 adults over the age of 65 years who completed the survey. Basic descriptive statistics and a series of step-wise binary logistic regression analyses were conducted; the dependent variable was the number of permanent teeth removed because of tooth decay or gum disease. Fifty-two percent of the participants were male, Hispanic participants made up 40 % of the sample and 76 % of the participants had at least a high school education. Tooth loss was significantly associated with older age ( OR = 1.09; p = 0.02), lower income ( OR = 0.01; p = 0.00), less than high school education ( OR = 0.32; p = 0.01), being Hispanic ( OR = 2.15; p = 0.05), self-reported fair-poor health status (OR 2.94; p = 0.02), consumption of one or more than one sweet beverage per day ( OR = 4.52 ; p = 0.00), no dental insurance ( OR = 4.70; p = 0.01) and length of time since last dental visit ( OR = 0.21; p = 0.01). The findings of the present study suggest possible causes for tooth loss in rural adults and underscore the need for in-depth research to study the overall oral health of rural older adults living in SLV. Previous studies show that certain minority and ethnic communities experience low human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates despite a higher cervical cancer burden. HPV is known to be responsible for almost all cervical cancer cases. Hmong Americans, a growing Asian American population, appear to be at increased risk. The cervical cancer incidence rate among Hmong American women is three times higher than other Asian/Pacific Islanders and more than four times higher than Non-Hispanic Whites. Despite such alarming statistics, there is limited research focusing on HPV literacy and its associated factors in the Hmong American community. This study's objectives are to investigate: (1) the level of HPV knowledge among Hmong Americans; (2) HPV vaccination initiation and completion rates of Hmong Americans; and (3) factors associated with HPV literacy in the Hmong American community. Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use was used as the study's theoretical framework. A self-administered paper and online health survey was completed by192 Hmong Americans living in a major metropolitan area in Minnesota. Results revealed a mean score of 4.76 (SD 1.67) for the 7-item questionnaire measuring HPV knowledge. The HPV vaccination initiation rate was 46.3 % (n = 56), with 32.7 % completing the recommended three doses. Multiple regression analysis found that participants' level of education, number of doctor visits, and cervical cancer screening literacy were significantly associated with HPV knowledge. This study's results indicate the important role of health providers in educating Hmong Americans patients about HPV and cervical cancer prevention to decrease the cervical cancer burden in this high-risk population. Food insecurity is steadily increasing in developed countries. Traditional interventions adopted to tackle food insecurity, like food banks, address the urgent need for food. By contrast, alternative interventions, such as community gardens and kitchens, are oriented towards social integration and the development of mutual aid networks. The objective of this paper is to examine whether the populations served by traditional and alternative interventions in food security differ according to measures of vulnerability. We studied newly registered participants to food security interventions. Participants were selected from a random sample of food security community organizations in a two-stage cluster sampling frame. The categorizing variable was participation in a community organization providing either traditional interventions or alternative interventions. Seven measures of vulnerability were used: food security; perceived health; civic participation; perceived social support of the primary network, social isolation, income and education. Regression multilevel models were used to assess associations. 711 participants in traditional interventions and 113 in alternative interventions were enrolled in the study. Between group differences were found with respect to food insecurity, health status perception, civic participation, education and income, but not with respect to social isolation or perceived social support from primary social network. Traditional and alternative food security interventions seem to reach different populations. Participants in traditional interventions were found to have less access to resources, compared to those in alternative interventions. Thus, new participants in traditional interventions may have higher levers of vulnerability than those in alternative interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the relationship between socio-economic status and emotional well-being of orphans in Mangaung, South Africa. Five hundred orphans aged 7-11 years participated in the cross-sectional study between 2009 and 2012. Data was collected by trained fieldworkers, who conducted face-to-face interviews and questionnaires with the orphans, their teachers and caregivers, and the heads of the households where the orphans resided. The caregivers, children and teachers all completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in order to measure the orphans' mental health, while heads of household provided information about socio-economic indicators. STATA version 12 was used to perform multivariate data analyses to identify socio-economic factors associated with the mental health of orphans. Food security, access to medical services and a male caregiver were factors associated with better emotional well-being of orphans, whereas other variables such as household asset index and monthly household expenditure were not linked with the orphans' mental health. Two of the three variables (food security and access to medical services) associated with better emotional well-being of orphans are also government interventions to assist orphans. Primary care providers in Prince George's County, Maryland reported inconsistencies in their ability to identify and refer patients with social care needs. This project aimed to improve health outcomes of Medicare beneficiaries by implementing social determinant of health (SDOH) screening to identify unmet needs and improve rates of referral to appropriate services. Buy-in was achieved from providers and frontline staff via stakeholder meetings at a private primary care group practice. The Health Leads questionnaire was modified and integrated into the electronic health record. Medical assistants (MA) were trained to conduct screening and initiate care plan referrals prior to visits with the medical provider. During implementation, 96.25% of patients (n = 231) agreed to screening. Of these, 13.42% (n = 31) screened positive for at least one SDOH need, and 48.39% (n = 15) reported multiple social needs. Top needs included social isolation (26.23%), literacy (16.39%), and financial concerns (14.75%). All patients screening positive for one or more social needs were provided referral resources. Patients who identified as being of Mixed or Other race had significantly higher rates of positive screens (p = 0.032) compared to Caucasians, African Americans, and Asians. Patients were more likely to report SDOH needs during in-person visits (17.22%) compared to telehealth visits (p = 0.020). Screening for SDOH needs is feasible and sustainable and can improve the identification of SDOH needs and resource referrals. A limitation of this project was the lack of follow-up to determine whether patients with positive SDOH screens had been successfully linked to resources after initial referral. Sexual and reproductive health interventions' effectiveness should be evaluated using a valid instrument. This study aimed to validate a questionnaire on sexual and reproductive health in adolescents and young adults from São Tomé and Príncipe who voluntarily enrolled in a vocational school in Portugal to complete their 12th school year and obtain a professional card. A questionnaire consisting of perception and knowledge sections was adapted from previous questionnaires. We followed the steps of psychometric analysis. Firstly, we assessed face validity and content validity. We used factorial analysis to validate the perceptions section (which included Likert-type questions). For the knowledge section (which consisted of multiple-choice questions), we used the key check, discrimination index, and difficulty index. We evaluated internal consistency through Cronbach's alpha for the perceptions section and the Kuder-Richardson score for the knowledge section. Out of 105 invited students, a total of ninety students were enrolled in this study, of whom 88 completed most of the questions. The exploratory analysis showed that most students agreed with the right to refuse intercourse. However, while approximately 23% disagreed that consensual sex among adult women or men is always wrong, around the same proportion agreed. A considerable number of students recognized condoms and pills as effective methods of contraception. However, most students were unfamiliar with other methods. Most knowledge questions showed acceptable difficulty levels, and the discrimination index varied among questions. The knowledge questions demonstrated good consistency levels. This study enabled us to develop an appropriate instrument for evaluating the effectiveness of public health interventions and identifying specific knowledge gaps in migrant populations from low-income countries. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for Hispanic women in the United States. In 2001, the Illinois Department of Public Health received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to implement the enhanced WISEWOMAN program (IWP) to address the disproportionate CVD risk among uninsured and underinsured women enrolled in the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. This paper presents the results of the Spanish-language arm of the IWP. Spanish speaking IWP participants were recruited from two sites, and randomized into either the minimum intervention (MI) or the enhanced intervention (EI) group. Both groups received CVD risk factor screening and educational handouts. The EI group also received an integrated 12-week nutrition and physical activity lifestyle change intervention. Of the 180 Spanish-speaking immigrants in this sample, 90 (50 %) received the EI and 90 (50 %) received the MI. At baseline there were no significant differences between group demographics or clinical values. At post-intervention, the EI group showed improvements in fat intake, fiber intake, moderate intensity physical activity, and total physical activity. At 1 year only the change in fiber intake remained. A significant improvement was also seen in body mass index (BMI) at the 1-year follow-up. The IWP Spanish-language arm was moderately successful in addressing risk factors for CVD in this population. Drowning, a largely preventable problem, continues to be a serious issue worldwide, with young men particularly at risk. Alcohol and drugs are often present among young males and, particularly for males aged 18-34 years, alcohol is considered to be a significant risk factor for drowning. The current study aimed to understand the motivations guiding the intentions of young Australian men to engage in drinking and swimming, a behaviour not yet examined systematically. A cross-sectional correlational design was adopted to investigate the ability of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and additional variables to predict males' intentions to drink and swim. Males ( N = 211) aged 18-34 years ( Mage = 23.93, SD = 4.01) completed a survey either on-line or paper-based. The survey assessed the TPB constructs of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control (PBC); and additional variables of group norms, anticipated regret, objective (i.e. swimming ability) and perceived (i.e. perceived severity and perceived susceptibility) risk perceptions, and past behaviour. Support was found for the TPB constructs of attitude and subjective norm, but not PBC, as well as the additional constructs of group norm, anticipated regret, objective risk, and past behaviour in predicting males' intentions to drink and swim; explaining an overall 76 % of variance. Knowledge gained from this study will help to inform resultant interventions designed to discourage alcohol use in, on, or around water and, thus, prevent drownings in this at risk group. The current study aimed to (1) offer a large-scale enumeration of college students' lifetime sexual behaviors and sexual behaviors at last event, and (2) apply a gender discrepancy lens to college students' sexual behaviors in order to examine potential gender differences in heterosexual college students' experiences. Nine-hundred and seventy college students between the ages of 18 and 27 from two large universities in the United States participated in the current study. Participants filled out a paper-pencil questionnaire during the last 30 min of class. Measures of lifetime sexual behaviors and engagement in behaviors at last sexual event were replicated from the National Survey of Sexual Health Behavior. Most college students engaged in some form of sexual behavior (manual, oral, vaginal-penile, anal). Men more frequently reported engaging in receptive sexual behaviors (e.g., receiving oral sex) where as women were more likely to engage in performative sexual behaviors (e.g., performing oral sex). At most recent sexual event, men were more likely than women to report being the sexual initiator. Findings highlight gender differences in sexual behavior and provide a foundation for social norms interventions. Holistic sexual health promotion for young adults includes acknowledging and discouraging sites of disparity in equity and pleasure. Therefore, college-level sexual health educators should pay attention to the potential pleasure gap between men and women in heterosexual encounters, and to see pleasure as an important part of sexual health that should be included in social norms campaigns. This study explored the economic costs and response rate of mail and web-based surveys with practicing dentists. A random sample of 6,000 practicing dentists was randomly assigned into three groups of 2,000: choice (mail or web-based), postal mail, or web-based. The Florida Tobacco Control Survey 2009, which is composed of 28 questions (including subject demographic questions), served as the survey instrument. A total of 1,232 surveys were returned by the three different groups (21% overall response rate). Response rates were best for the mail (26%) with the worst response rate coming from the Web group (11%). However, a cost-effectiveness analysis revealed that web surveys were 2.68 times more cost effective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: We aim to survey patients' opinions on perceived differences in patient care delivered by male and female physicians. Methods: Patients of primary care practices at Mayo Clinic, Arizona completed a survey sent through the electronic health record. The survey evaluated opinion regarding their primary care physician (PCP)'s overall healthcare provision capabilities and any perceived differences based on gender. Results: 4983 patients' responses were included in final analysis. Compared to male patients, most female patients preferred to have a female PCP (78.1% vs. 32.7%, p < 0.01). Having a preference for female physicians was correlated with higher overall opinion of female physicians. The majority of male patients did not hold a difference in opinion regarding male versus female physicians (p < 0.01). Male patients were half as likely to have a better opinion and nearly 2.5 times more likely to have a worse opinion of female physicians (p < 0.01) compared to female patients. Patients preferring female physicians were nearly 3 times more likely to have a better opinion of female physicians compared to patients with no preference (p < 0.01). Conclusion: In a primary care setting, majority of female patients compared to male patients preferred female physicians as their PCP and had higher opinion of the care delivery of female physicians. These findings may influence how practices should assign primary care physicians to new patients and add underlying context to patient satisfaction ratings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake among adolescents remains suboptimal in the US. The COVID-19 pandemic posed new challenges to increase HPV vaccination rates. To characterize parent-reported barriers to obtain HPV vaccination for their children and to identify psychosocial factors associated with parents' intention to vaccinate their children for HPV, we administered parent surveys between April 2020 and January 2022 during a randomized pragmatic trial assessing the impact of evidence-based implementation strategies on HPV vaccination rates for adolescent patients at six Mayo Clinic primary care practices in Southeast Minnesota. A total of 342 surveys were completed (response rate 34.1%). Analyses were focused on parents of unvaccinated children (n = 133). The survey assessed the main reason the child did not receive the HPV vaccine, parental beliefs about the vaccine, and the parent's intention to vaccinate the child for HPV in the next 12 months. Frequently reported awareness and access barriers to HPV vaccination included not knowing the child was due (17.8%) and COVID-19 related delay (11.6%). Frequently reported attitudinal barriers include the belief that the child was too young for the vaccine (17.8%) and that the vaccine is not proven to be safe (16.3%). Injunctive social norm (Adjusted-OR = 3.15, 95%CI: 1.94, 5.41) and perceived harm beliefs (Adjusted-OR = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.35, 0.94) about the HPV vaccine were positively and negatively associated with HPV vaccination intention, respectively. Our findings suggest that continued efforts to overcome parental awareness, access, and attitudinal barriers to HPV vaccination are needed and underscore the importance of utilizing evidence-based health system-level interventions. Transgender women living with HIV face significant barriers to healthcare that may be best addressed through community-centered interventions holistically focused on their HIV-related, gender-related, and other important needs. Community health ambassador (CHA) interventions (education and training programs designed to engage communities and community leaders in health promotion) may be an effective option, though information about the natural helping networks of this vulnerable population is too limited to inform the implementation of this approach. This study uses social network analysis to describe the natural helping networks of transgender women living with HIV, their help-seeking patterns for HIV-related, gender-related, and ancillary resources, and the characteristics of potential network ambassadors. From February to August 2019, transgender women living with HIV in the US (N = 231) participated a 30-min online survey asking them to describe their natural helping networks (N = 1054). On average, participants were embedded within natural helping networks consisting of 4–5 people. They were more likely to seek help from informal network members vs. formal service providers (p <.01), and from chosen family and partners/spouses (p <.05) above other social connections. Older network members (p <.01), other transgender women (p <.05), and those with whom they regularly engaged face-to-face (p <.01) (vs. social technology) were identified as potential network ambassadors for HIV-, gender-related, and other important issues. These findings suggest an opportunity to develop CHA interventions that leverage existing help networks and potential network ambassadors to promote equitable access to HIV, gender-affirming, and other crucial resources among this medically underserved group. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an emerging global health problem in Nepal. However, there is still a paucity of information on its burden and its risk factors among service users from a hospital based setting. This is a cross sectional study conducted among the service users of diabetes clinic in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital of Nepal. A sample size of 154 was selected systematically from the patient registration from 30th July to 16th August, 2013. Of the 154 participants, 42.85 % had T2DM. Higher mean body mass index (26.50 ± 5.05 kg/m) and waist circumference (92.47 ± 11.30 cm) was found among the individuals with T2DM and, compared to those without diabetes (Body mass index 25.13 ± 4.28 kg/m: waist circumference 88.91 ± 12.30 cm) (P = 0.013). In further analysis, the sedentary occupation (aOR 3.088; 95 % CI 1.427-6.682), measure of high waist circumference (aOR 2.758; 95 % CI 1.238-6.265) individuals from lower socioeconomic status (aOR 3.989; 95 % CI 1.636-9.729) right knowledge on symptoms of diabetes (aOR 3.670; 95 % CI 1.571-8.577) and right knowledge on prevention of diabetes (aOR 3.397; 95 % CI 1.377-8.383) were significantly associated with T2DM status. The current findings suggest that health programs targeting T2DM should focus increasing awareness on harmful health effects of sedentary occupation, symptoms of T2DM and its prevention among the urban population. The misuse of prescription stimulant medications (MPS) and academic dishonesty (AD) are both problematic behaviors among college students. Although both behaviors are linked to a student's desire to succeed academically, little research has been conducted to examine the relationship between these behaviors. The purpose of this study was to determine if students who engaged in past-year MPS committed acts of AD more frequently than those who do not engage in MPS. We collected our data from a sample of undergraduates (n = 974) between the ages of 18 and 25 enrolled at one of three universities in the US who completed an online questionnaire to assess AD and MPS. Results indicated that 18.2 % of the sample engaged in MPS in the past year and 65 % committed one or more acts of AD during the past year. An increased frequency of AD increased the odds of reporting MPS when controlling for known covariates (e.g., gender, stimulant prescription status, and energy drink consumption). In addition, higher rates of MPS were identified in students affiliated with a Greek organization, those with a current stimulant prescription, those who consume energy drinks, and those who misuse other prescriptions. Concerning specific AD-types, misusers reported copying off someone else's homework, having someone copy of their homework, and using the internet to commit acts of dishonesty more frequently than those who do not engage in MPS. Many patients have a rudimentary knowledge of their body's anatomy and functioning. In a clinical setting, deficits in patient understanding can lead to miscommunication affecting patient care and satisfaction. Hence, this study aims to estimate a baseline of patient knowledge regarding pelvic anatomy and to assess their educational preferences in learning about related topics. For this cross-sectional study, we developed a 24-item assessment with questions related to pelvic anatomy, health, and function. The questionnaire was validated using feedback from anonymous community focus groups, and then distributed to English-speaking female patients at the Women's Clinic of LAC + USC Medical Center (Los Angeles). The participant performance as a percentage-correct score on the anatomy assessment constituted our primary outcome. As secondary outcomes, educational preferences were inquired. Statistical analysis was conducted using two-sample t tests. The majority of our total sample of 269 were Hispanic (65.4 %) with a mean age of 35.3 years. We documented deficits in patient knowledge with a mean score of 66.1 % correct on anatomy assessment. Statistically significant lower scores were associated with less education and with Hispanic/Latino origin. Additionally, we found that while physicians have played a role in health education, women prefer to receive more education from their providers in the future. The deficits we identified indicate the pressing need to improve the pelvic health literacy of our patients. Regular walking confers many physical health benefits, including a reduced risk of disease-specific and all-cause mortality and better physical fitness. However, less is known about its role in mental health. Thus, the aims of this study were to determine the associations of outdoor walking per week with costs of psychotropic drugs used and mental health in adults. 500 adults aged 18 to 64 years in Hangzhou (China) reported sex, age, the name of the psychotropic drugs used and their dosage, and outdoor walking during the past 7 days. The cost that a person spends on buying psychotropic drugs for a month was considered psychotropic drugs costs. Overall mental health was assessed using the Chinese Version of the 12-Item General Health Questionnaire. The levels of walking in participants taking psychotropic were significantly lower than participants who did not taking psychotropic (p = 0.002). There was a significant negative correlation between mental health scores and minutes of walking per week and a significant positive correlation between the number of psychotropic drugs used and walking per week (p < 0.05). However, no particular associations were found between costs of psychotropic drug used and walking per week. Outdoor walking is prospectively associated with better overall mental health in adults. In early-2020, the epidemiology of the SARS-CoV-2 virus was still in discovery and initial reports about the role of asymptomatic individuals were developing. The Waco COVID Survey was implemented in mid-2020 with targeted serological surveillance to assess relationships among risk factors and asymptomatic transmission in McLennan County, Texas, USA. Because large-scale random sampling of the population was not feasible, a targeted and repeated sampling of specific clustered groups of asymptomatic individuals was employed. This included four waves (initial intake [n = 495], two follow-ups separated by a month [n = 348; n = 287], and a final follow-up one year later [n = 313]) of sampling participants in different risk categories: (a) healthcare workers (e.g., physicians, nurses, etc.) and first responders, (b) essential service employees (e.g., convenience and grocery stores, restaurants focused on delivery and carry-out), (c) employees whose businesses began reopening on May 1 (e.g., dine-in restaurants, churches, etc.) including church attendees, and (d) individuals that practiced intensive isolation. The survey collected information on demographics, compliance with public health recommendations, satisfaction with government responses, health history, attitudes regarding the SARS-CoV-2 virus and COVID-19 disease, health behaviors, personality, stress, and general affect. Results illustrate pandemic fatigue over time, the influence of political leniency on opinions and behaviors, the importance of face coverings in preventing infection, and the positive impact of vaccination in the community. This project remains one of the largest longitudinal SARS-CoV-2 antibody seroprevalence surveys in the US, and details for successful implementation and community involvement are discussed. Leishmaniasis is a major health problem caused by a protozoan of the genus Leishmania, most commonly transmitted by infected female sand flies. Intersectoral collaboration is essential for the implementation of integrated vector management control with community participation. The present study aims to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practices of the population toward leishmaniasis in central Morocco. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted using an administered questionnaire assisted by health professionals, on 750 people in the Marrakech Safi, endemic region of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Of those, 702 agreed to be recruited for our study, of which 63,5% were women, 48,1% were aged between 18 and 40 years, and more than half of the participants (60%) were from rural areas. Overall, the knowledge, attitude and practices (KAPs) for leishmaniasis are too poor for more than 85% of the population in the study area. Basic knowledge and perceptions of leishmaniasis were good for 14,6% of respondents. While, 4,5% of the members had good knowledge of CL, only 0,7% had good level of knowledge about vesciral leishmaniasis (VL). Furthermore 3,7% of those polled have favorable attitudes and preventive practices. No association was found between knowledge and age, province or occupation. However, rural residents were four times more likely than urbain residents to have good basic knowledge (ORA = 4,74; CI95%: 1,04 -22,05). In addition, the female gender also has the chance to possess good basic knowledge and perceptions 3 times more than the men (ORA = 3,18; CI95%: 1,16 -8,69). A booster dose after primary COVID-19 vaccination series was considered crucial after the emergence of the B.1.617.2 (Delta) and B.1.1.529 (Omicron) variants. Active surveillance was used to investigate reporting of adverse events post-booster dose of either of the licensed mRNA Comirnaty (Pfizer/BioNTech) or Spikevax (Moderna) vaccines in adult (17 years and older) recipients in central Italy. Eligible participants were enrolled and interviewed via phone using a structured questionnaire. Primary outcomes related to the occurrence of adverse events post-booster were stratified by vaccine, and frequency of local/systemic, mild/moderate/severe events. Of a total of 622 participants interviewed, 554 (89.1%) reported at least one adverse event (88.2% and 92.9% after the Comirnaty or Spikevax vaccine, respectively): 63.4% were female, and 78.5% aged 17 to 64 years, regardless of vaccine. 87.7% and 68.2% of all recipients described at least one local or systemic reaction, respectively: 97.3, 38.6 and 4.7% reported mild, moderate, or severe events, respectively. The most frequent adverse reactions were pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site and fatigue, while malaise and fever significantly occurred after the Comirnaty, and vomiting after the Spikevax booster. Compared to the primary vaccination, lymphadenopathy was more common after the booster (p < 0.001), especially after Comirnaty vaccine. The study findings revealed no serious or unexpected adverse events, and are in agreement with data available on booster dose for both mRNA vaccines. Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy among young adults is a current public health issue that needs to be addressed considering the seasonally driven waves of disease and the administration of vaccine boosters. As a prevention measure, the EU Covid certificate had been implemented to increase vaccine uptake, but its application was controversial. Our study investigated students' opinions and attitudes towards Covid-19 vaccination and the EU Covid certificate through a mixed-methods design. An 18-item questionnaire was administered to 200 students during a vaccination campaign in September 2021 at the University of Bordeaux, France. Simultaneously, 30 students attended a semi-structured interview. Collected data were analyzed separately then discussed together through a parallel and convergent approach. Results showed that vaccine hesitancy was high among students, mostly from fear of short-term side effects. However, respondents decided to get vaccinated to obtain the EU Covid certificate, even if they considered it as a violation of their freedom. Straightforward communication about Covid-19 vaccination did not reach students, although this was a strong expectation from governmental and health institutions. Thalassemia is humanity's most common genetic disorder and represents a serious healthcare challenge in the United Arab Emirates. Increasing awareness is a crucial part of any successful strategy to prevent thalassemia. This research examined knowledge levels and attitudes regarding thalassemia screening, counseling, and monitoring from medical and nonmedical students at Ajman University. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted among a convenience sample of Ajman university students in the UAE. A questionnaire was distributed which was composed of three main sections. The first section covered participants' demographic data. The second section covered general knowledge of thalassemia and its screening measures. The third section assessed risk factors, regulations, and preventive measures. The data were analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 24. A total of 523 participants completed the whole survey. Generally, there was a good level of awareness of thalassemia and thalassemia screening among participants. Approximately three-quarters of participants (76.5%) agreed that thalassemia screening should be compulsory for the individual and the majority of students and 92.7% recognized the importance of thalassemia screening for both partners. Approximately three-quarters (75.9%) of participants disagreed that fetuses with thalassemia should be aborted. More than half of the participants disagreed that thalassemia carriers and patients should be prevented from marrying each other. Generally, older respondents (final year students), respondents who had dealt with thalassemia patients, and respondents with relatives with thalassemia had more comprehensive knowledge of thalassemia. Medical schools are developing global health programmes, and medical students are requesting global health training and creating opportunities when these are not provided by medical schools. This article described the Wolisso Project (WP), a medical experience on clinical electives in Sub-Saharan Africa, driven by a collaboration between a student organisation and a Nongovernmental Organization (NGO). Preclinical medical students spent 4 weeks as part of a multidisciplinary medical team in Africa. Post-elective questionnaires were administered to all subjects who participated in the project. Of all, 141 students responded to the questionnaire. The participants came from 30 Italian universities. The main difficulties reported are due to the lack of resources for the exercise of the medical activity, and difficulties related to language and communication. The African experience had a positive impact on the progress of the studies upon return, with an increase in determination and motivation. The experience had also positive influences on the future professional choices and carriers. The experience seems to contribute not only to the professional growth, but also to the personal development. A key factor in the positive outcomes of this experience is it being implemented by an NGO with long-term working relationships with the African populations. Another is that the project is carried out in health facilities where NGO staff have been working for a long time. These factors reduce the potential risks connected with this type of experience. They ensure a satisfactory level of supervision, the lack of which has been a serious problem in many similar experiences. A well-structured, mentored experience in international health can have a positive impact on preclinical students' attitudes, including their compassion, volunteerism, and interest in serving underserved populations. Only a small number of Italian universities facilitate pre-graduate medical elective experiences in LMICs. The WP seems to be attempting to compensate for the lack of international experience in LMICs offered by universities. In this cross-sectional study, adverse events after the first and second dose of BNT162b2 mRNA (Pfizer-BioNTech, Comirnaty) vaccine against coronavirus disease 2019 were investigated among employees of clinics in central Italy. A 42-items questionnaire was administrated to vaccine recipients. Adverse events were classified based on severity and occurrence as reported in the literature. A descriptive/univariate analysis using Chi-square or Fisher's Exact tests was performed. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to assess risk factors. 340 individuals (61.5% females; median age 49 years) participated. Adverse events were reported by 279 (82%) and 281 (82.6%) individuals as induced by the first and second dose, respectively. Mild reactions were mainly reported (80.9% and 80.3%), followed by moderate (11.8% and 37.1%) and severe (3.8% and 4.7%). Adverse events were identical to those already described as very common (81.8% and 80.6%), although vaccine-coincidental events not cited in the literature were reported by 6% and 15.6% following each dose. Age ≤ 55 years was a risk factor for any adverse event after each injection (ORs: 2.942 and 2.818), as well as female sex for those mild (ORs: 1.856 and 2.818) and common (ORs: 3.452 and 2.145). Findings were consistent with national reports as most of the adverse events were mild and associated with female sex and young age, while investigations are needed for reactions not described elsewhere. Data are useful to support the vaccine safety profile, also because largely targeted healthcare personnel more skilled than general population in self-diagnosis of health-related issues. Vaccination behavior is an informative metric for assessing flu seasons and is especially important to understand for the 2020–2021 flu season, which coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to estimate flu vaccine behavior and assess vaccine perceptions during the pandemic season. Using a cross-sectional descriptive study design, we conducted an online survey to assess vaccination behavior and perceptions of both COVID-19 and the flu. Patients were identified as recently seen by providers in an academic internal medicine practice (n = 827) and surveys were distributed as messages in the Epic electronic medical record system. We found that 88.3% of respondents (188/206) had received their flu vaccination for the season at the time of their survey response in December 2020–February 2021. Of those that had not yet received the flu vaccine, only 13.6% indicated they planned on getting one. 12.5% of respondents said they had changed their flu vaccine plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Looking at differences from past season's behavior, more individuals switched to getting the flu vaccine than those that switched to not getting the vaccine this season. The most frequently cited reasons for not receiving the flu vaccination were concerns about side effects and not being in a priority group. Changes in flu vaccination behavior from previous seasons represent a net positive in the direction of vaccine acceptance. Barriers to vaccination were identified and results from this study provide more information on vaccine perceptions, beliefs, and behavior, which can benefit future vaccination programs. Built environments in rural settings may provide greater challenges than those in urban settings due to physical characteristics inherent to low-density population areas. Multiuse recreational trails, such as those that repurpose abandoned railroad lines, may provide a physical activity resource that is well suited to rural areas. However, the direct impact of trail availability on physical activity behavior is not generally known because it is unclear whether activity reported in most trail research represents increases in physical activity or displacement of activity in individuals who previously exercised in other locations. This research, initiated by a group of students in a graduate seminar, represents to our knowledge, the first instance in which PA was assessed prior to the availability of an entirely new rails-to-trails facility. The research was implemented using a nonequivalent dependent variable design to counter the lack of a control group; the nonequivalent dependent variable chosen was weekly servings of fruit and vegetables. Participants responding to intercept interviews classified days of activity during the prior week as mild, moderate or vigorous. Baseline results for 244 participants suggested generally low levels of activity prior to trail availability; number of reported days of activity decreased with described intensity. We also discuss several issues encountered in planning and implementing this group project including those related to data collection, variable levels of commitment among student members, and inconsistent project management, and offer potential solutions to these concerns. Distracted driving indiscriminately kills nearly 3500 people each year with young adults having greater risks associated with this phenomenon. Prevention programs targeting the distracted driving habits of young adults are necessary to ameliorate the high costs, both in dollars and in lives, associated with this behavior. Few health education and prevention programs have been assessed for their effectiveness in changing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to distracted driving. This study explores a distracted driving intervention among undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory public health course. A quasi-experimental study design was used to compare the pre- and post-data of the group receiving 5-weeks of a distracted driving intervention to a control group. Questionnaires were administered to both groups prior to and 2 weeks following the intervention to assess changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to distracted driving. A Difference-in-Difference technique showed significant changes in knowledge (β = 0.40, p = 0.03) and total scores (β = 2.48, p = 0.04) in the intervention (n = 97) compared to the control (n = 131). T-tests examining pre- and post-scores for individual behaviors showed the intervention group displayed positive changes for some behaviors (talking, texting, cellphone use, grooming) compared to the control. The results support the impact that a classroom-based distracted driving intervention can have on undergraduate college students. Although Vietnam has been successful in the fight against the first wave of COVID-19, domestic outbreaks have continued to occur. Given university students constitute a significant proportion of the population in Vietnam, to improve the prevention and control of COVID-19 in Vietnam and comparable countries, we examined their knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) towards face mask use which is an important preventive measure and the association between the levels of COVID-19 knowledge and KAP towards face mask use. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on all students studying at Phenikaa University, Hanoi, using a self-developed questionnaire consisted of 42 questions regarding KAP towards face mask use as well as reuse of cloth mask, and COVID-19 knowledge. Among 728 participants, 40.9% (298/728) were male, 63.2% (460/728) were from health-related faculties, 46% (335/728) lived in urban areas, and 51.9% (378) had good levels of COVID-19 knowledge. Regarding face mask, most (89.7%, 653/728) participants had good knowledge scores, 72.8% (530/728) had positive attitudes, and 76.5% (557/728) had good practice scores. The most common types of masks used were surgical mask (57.6%, 419/728), followed by non-antibacterial cloth mask (23.1%, 168/728). Among 168 participants using non-antibacterial cloth mask, 43.5% reused masks (73/168), of whom 6.8% (5/73) did not wash their masks at least daily. Face mask use knowledge was statistically associated with COVID-19 knowledge (P < 0.001). Face mask use attitudes were statistically associated with education levels (P = 0.02), and COVID-19 knowledge (P < 0.001). Practice of face mask use was statistically associated with gender (P = 0.03), geographical distribution (P = 0.04), academic majors (P = 0.02), and COVID-19 knowledge (P = 0.01). The levels of KAP towards face mask use among Vietnamese university students are high. It is important to continue to enforce the mass masking policy, together with the ongoing community education with an emphasis on the route of COVID-19 transmission and how correct face mask use can stop the spread. To develop and validate a brief, structured, behavioral health module for use by local public health practitioners to rapidly assess behavioral health needs in disaster settings. Data were collected through in-person, telephone, and web-based interviews of 101 individuals affected by Hurricanes Katrina (n = 44) and Sandy (n = 57) in New Orleans and New Jersey in April and May 2018, respectively. Questions included in the core module were selected based on convergent validity, internal consistency reliability, test–retest reliability across administration modes, principal component analysis (PCA), question comprehension, efficiency, accessibility, and use in population-based surveys. Almost all scales showed excellent internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha, 0.79–0.92), convergent validity (r > 0.61), and test–retest reliability (in-person vs. telephone, intra-class coefficient, ICC, 0.75–1.00; in-person vs. web-based ICC, 0.73–0.97). PCA of the behavioral health scales yielded two components to include in the module—mental health and substance use. The core module has 26 questions—including self-reported general health (1 question); symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety (Primary Care PTSD Screen, Patient Health Questionnaire-4; 8 questions); drinking and other substance use (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Concise, AUDIT-C; Drug Abuse Screening Test, DAST-10; stand-alone question regarding increased substance use since disaster; 14 questions); prior mental health conditions, treatment, and treatment disruption (3 questions)—and can be administered in 5–10 minutes through any mode. This flexible module allows practitioners to quickly evaluate behavioral health needs, effectively allocate resources, and appropriately target interventions to help promote recovery of disaster-affected communities. In Italy, as well as in almost all countries, the use of masks in public with several other measures has been an important health measure during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The correct use of masks is essential, as a wrong use and disposal may increase the rate of contagious. Herein, we report a descriptive study evaluating the knowledge and use, reuse and disposal of masks in community settings. An anonymous questionnaire called MaSK (Mask uSe and Knowledge) questionnaire was developed and offered to patients referring at our dermatologic outpatient clinic. A total of 2562 full complete patients' questionnaires were considered for the study. Our results showed that awareness and information campaigns aimed at the general population are urgently needed in order to implement a correct use of masks and limit as much as possible the infection rate. Background: Compared to other racial/ethnic groups, U.S. Vietnamese have higher Hepatitis B infection prevalence, which is a major liver cancer risk factor. Increased testing could reduce this disparity. It is critical to understand subgroups of U.S. Vietnamese least likely to have been tested for Hepatitis B and design appropriate interventions. We examined healthcare- and acculturation-related factors influencing Hepatitis B testing among U.S. Vietnamese. Methods: Survey data of 100 U.S. Vietnamese attending health fairs/programs hosted by community-based organizations (2017–2018) were analyzed. Healthcare-related predictors included insurance and past 2-year checkup. Acculturation-related predictors included Vancouver Acculturation Index, percentage of lifetime in the U.S., and Vietnamese and English fluency. We conducted a multiple logistic regression controlling for age, sex, education, and household income. Results: The sample was an average 37.5 years old and 61.6% female. Insurance coverage was reported by 83.0%. Average percentage of lifetime in the U.S. was 56.8%. Seventy percent reported having received Hepatitis B testing. Hepatitis B testing was associated with health insurance (aOR = 2.61, 95% CI = [1.05–6.47], p =.04) but not any acculturation-related predictors Conclusion: Improving insurance coverage and options can be a strategy to increase Hepatitis B testing among U.S. Vietnamese. More education regarding Hepatitis B (e.g., via community-based, culturally-appropriate, lay health worker-led programs) is needed to ensure that individuals are aware of their testing status and pursue appropriate healthcare decisions. This study clarifies the prevalence of rear seat belt use among university students and explores the factors that influence seat belt use on general roads and expressways. Questionnaires were distributed to 1,091 students who attended health education lectures: 893 students (81.9%) agreed to participate and met the criteria; among them, 660 (73.9%) provided complete responses. While one-third (33.0%) of rear seat passengers "always" used seat belts on general traffic roads, three-fourths (73.2%) "always" used them on expressways. Multivariate analysis revealed that being male and the perception of obligation and recognition of the benefits of rear seat belt use were associated with use on general roads, whereas the possession of a driver's license and recognition of benefits were associated with use on expressways. Finally, we suggest that educational programs on seat belt use be developed and delivered to general road and expressway users to promote seat belt use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Smoking is recognized as the major cause of lung cancer. Healthcare professionals play an important role in lung cancer prevention policies, as they act as a source of guidance for patients and advocates. The following survey evaluated prevalence, knowledge, and attitudes toward tobacco smoking among a sample of workers in "IRCCS Istituto Tumori "Giovanni Paolo II" of Bari, an Italian cancer hospital. An anonymous questionnaire was completed by 104 healthcare professionals to collect personal and occupational data about smoking status, knowledge about the harms of smoking, current legislation in place, Second-Hand Smoke (SHS) awareness, and, for ex-smokers, the reasons for quitting. Among participants, 17.8% were current smokers, 26.2% former smokers, and 56% never smoked. Only 40% acknowledged that the smoking ban is generally respected, and 63.2% reported that they smoke during working hours. Most of the participants perceived tobacco control policy as an efficient way to protect public health. Currently, the implementation of Italian anti-smoking legislation has so far improved neither smoking cessation rates nor the will to quit smoking completely. Our experience highlights that to date the anti-smoking strategies have limited efficacy even in a cancer center; in fact, there is still a large prevalence of smokers among hospital personnel. The general awareness regarding E-smoking is varying from country to other depending on multivariable factors. We try to investigate the prevalence of E-Cigarette Awareness, Perceived Harmfulness, Prevalence, and Associations with Smoking-Cessation Outcomes among different age groups and different sex in Jordanian individuals. The study element shaped by data gathered from various questionnaire surveys. The questionnaire was of our own design the method of data collection was through online surveys Different applications were used to distributing the questionnaire including; Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, other social applications. The study included 1536 participants. The prevalence of E-smoking is 18% among Jordanian individuals where it is 24.9% in males and 3.5% in females. 47.3% of participants believe that E-smoking has less harmful effects than traditional cigarette smoking while 46.7% believe that E-smoking has the same risk of cigarette smoking. 56% of participants believe the E-smoking can lead to addiction. E-smoking is considered an emerging modality of smoking with limited data regarding its long term impact regarding its addictive behavior and toxic effect. Electronic nicotine delivery systems were promoted publically as a healthier replacement for conventional cigarettes. Knowledge and beliefs of the public can drive their behaviours to adapt or reject the new habit. No previous research was conducted in Jordan to assess electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) prevalence, and limited data are available on public opinions and orientation toward this new habit. To assess prevalence of, knowledge, attitude and beliefs about e-cigarettes, and examine factors associated with plans of quitting or initiating e-cigarettes among adults in Jordan. A large cross-sectional face-to-face survey on a random sample of adult population aged ≥ 18 years was conducted over two months to include 1820 adults in Jordan. A representative sample was collected using proportionate random sampling technique, which enabled us to geographically categorise the study population. Reliability and validity measures were taken to ensure a comprehensive and appropriate study tool. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS®) version 24 was used to conduct descriptive analysis, logistic regression, and Rao–Scott chi-square. Findings were considered statistically significant at p value < 0.05 (with a confidence limit at 95%). Of 2164 adults approached, 1820 completed the questionnaire (84.1% response rate). The prevalence of current e-cigarette smokers and dual smokers were 11.7% and 4.0%, respectively. Quitting conventional smoking (38.8%) and enjoying the flavour (32.5%) were the most common reasons to start vaping. Friends were the major source of information about e-cigarettes. There was evidence that adults aged 45–59 years were less likely to be dual smokers (OR 0.51; 95%CI 0.29–0.66; p = 0.03). Poor knowledge about the content (23.7%) and types of e-cigarettes (14.5%) was reported. Plans to reduce or quit e-cigarettes were significantly associated with three factors: smokers' knowledge about its content, social impression, smokers' satisfaction with e-cigarettes. Social impression was also associated with plans of initiating e-cigarettes. Most participants thought vaping cannot be harmful to children and pregnant women (73.1%) and cannot be addictive (58.2%). Electronic cigarettes were considered helpful in smoking cessation by 69.1% of participants. The proportions of adults who were currently electronic cigarette and dual smokers were 11.7% and 4.0%, respectively. Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women. It is preventable if detected early. Effective screening can detect the earliest stage of premalignant form. This study was carried out to ascertain the knowledge and attitude of female students in four tertiary institutions in Imo State towards cervical cancer and its screening. Interviewee administered close-ended structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Questionnaires were validated by content and construct validity. A total of 400 female students in tertiary institutions within reproductive age; 16–45 years were recruited as respondents. Of the respondents, 398 (99.5%) completed and returned their questionnaires. These were analyzed using simple statistical methods. Results revealed that 350 (87.9%) have heard of cervical cancer while 265 (66.6%) have heard of cervical screening. Sexually active respondents were 186 (47%) meanwhile only 17 (4.3%) had undergone the screening. Most (93.5%), agreed that having multiple sexual partners was a risk factor. Most respondents (96.2%), knew that Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the causative agent. The most prevalent (94%) reasons for not undertaking the screening was embarrassment followed by stigmatization 320 (80.4%). This study revealed high knowledge of cervical cancer among the students but poor attitude towards its screening. This calls for continued enlightenment for women of reproductive age including students in tertiary institutions on routine screening for cervical cancer especially as soon as they become sexually active. Neurocognitive impairment (NCI) associated with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains prevalent amongst people living with HIV. Testing for HIV-associated NCI in routine clinical care is limited in South Africa and reasons for this are unclear. We conducted an online survey amongst healthcare workers (HCW) to assess HIV-associated NCI knowledge and current practices. The final sample included four hundred surveys (n=400). Chi-square analyses were used to explore HCW knowledge of HIV-associated NCI and screening tools. One-way ANOVA was used to compare mean responses between HCW categories. We observed low awareness of HIV-associated NCI terminology and screening tools. HCW seldom suspected NCI among patients and screening practices were uncommon. Referrals for further NCI investigations were never requested. HCW expressed a desire to receive further training to identify HIV associated NCI. The current study highlights the context of HIV-associated NCI knowledge and practices among front-line HIV HCW in resource-limited settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The coronavirus pandemic first started in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and affected the whole world. In our country, new measures to be taken were announced after the first case was seen on March 11, 2020. In this study, patients who admitted to the smoking cessation clinic in 2018 and followed up by phone, regarding smoking cessation status in 2019 were questioned for their smoking cessation status after the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. In this descriptive study, the patients who applied to the smoking cessation outpatient clinic in 2018 were questioned regarding their smoking cessation status after 1 year and after the pandemic. It was investigated whether coronapandemia had an effect on smoking cessation. The data were evaluated by using SPSS 22 software. A value of p < 0.05 was considered significant. A total of 357 individuals with a median of Fagerström score of 7.0 were included in the study. Seventy-one (19.9%) of the subjects used nicotine tape, 268 (75.1%) used varenicline, and 18 (5.0%) used both. When the success of those who quit smoking before pandemic and those who quit smoking after pandemic were compared, a statistically significant relationship was found (p < 0.001). In our study, the rate of smoking cessation after 1 year was 23.7%, and the most common side effects were psychiatric complaints, whereas the rate of smoking cessation during the pandemic period was 31.1%. Exceptional precautionary measures have been adopted to stop the transmission and control of COVID-19 through the world and Pakistan is facing lockdown in this scenario. Public loyalty to precautionary measures is affected by their knowledge, attitude, risk factors and practices (KAP) towards COVID-19. The present study was conducted among the Pakistani residents to observe the knowledge, attitude, practices and risk factors towards COVID-19 outbreak in Pakistan. A questionnaire was designed, and a cross-sectional survey was conducted among participants of the study area. Participants were asked the questions regarding knowledge, attitude, practices and risk factors towards COVID-19. Data were analyzed by SPSS and t/F test and correlation was applied among the knowledge, attitude, risk factors and practices. A total of 1060 questionnaires were received. 1004 were included while 56 were excluded. The highest representation was from Punjab province (65.6%), female (63%) and age group of 21–30 years (62.1%). Most participants were single (85%), Muslim (99.4%), Urdu speaking (45.6%) and were graduates (51.5%). Most of the participants were students (52.9%) and were from economically middle-class families (40.8%). The knowledge was positively correlated with attitude and practices whereas negatively correlated with risk factors (P < 0.05). The attitude was negatively correlated with risk factor and positively correlated with practices. The risk factors and practices were positively correlated with each other. Health education program to improve the COVID-19 knowledge, attitude, practices and risk factors should be initiated to combat current health challenge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, the largest freestanding academic pediatric hospital in Illinois, created the Healthy Communities initiative in 2016 to expand the hospital's mission to improve child health by partnering with local community organizations. Through the Thrive leadership development program, a group of hospital employees developed an action-learning project to understand how employees and physicians might engage with a specific Healthy Communities initiative to increase participation in organization-affiliated community outreach activities. After conducting a literature review and interviews with key stakeholders, the group characterized current employee and physician community outreach activities and interests through an online survey. The 19-item Likert style survey assessed perspectives on key motivations, barriers, and opportunities. A multidisciplinary sample of 564 respondents completed the survey. Although 87% of respondents currently participate in community outreach activities, only 44% participate through the institution. Motivations for participation included helping others less fortunate (70%), giving back to the community (68%), and creating awareness of an initiative (45%). The ideal setting for future participation would not require ongoing commitment (82%), could be done on weekends (69%), and completed with co-workers, friends or family (71%). The ideal types of opportunities for future participation could involve donations (86%), volunteering their skills (79%), and attending fundraisers (73%). Community outreach participation is high among employees and physicians at our institution. Targeting individual motivating factors could increase participation in activities through the institution. The COVID-19 disease is presently a matter of global public health concern as it could be potentially fatal. Health workers have at the moment, inadequate knowledge of prevention measures, and their erroneous practices may directly increase the risk of spread. As a result, matters are complicated further as far as the chain of infection is concerned. The present cross-sectional study was conducted with 494 Health Worker participants in Cyprus between the 1st and 20th of May and the data were collected via an online questionnaire. The survey was created using information from a previous study as well as current directives published on the WHO website. The statistical software SPSS 22.0 was used for data analysis. The ANOVA test was used for the comparison of quantitative variables, while the Kruskal–Wallis test was used in cases of non-parametric distribution. The Pearson or Spearman coefficients were used to test correlation and the levels of materiality were set to 0,05. Women constituted 66,7% of the participants and 44,8% of all participants were between the age of 30–39 years old. The majority (75,4%) of the participants were Nursing Officers and 44,5% held postgraduate qualifications. HWs appeared to have a positive perception (x̅ = 3.58, SD = 0.53, MR = 1–5) regarding the course of the pandemic and their knowledge of the virus was found to be generally satisfactory. The findings of the current study indicate that in case of a similar global public health crisis, certain educational interventions should be implemented. There is little scientific knowledge about e-cigarette use in South Africa. This study aimed to describe the risk factors and perceptions of selected Johannesburg-based users of e-cigarettes. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from a convenient sample of 188 participants, of which 160 were males and 28 females. The survey results showed that participants used e-cigarettes at home (n = 28/ 14.8%), work (n = 76/ 40.4%), tertiary institutions (n = 50/ 26.5%) and in their vehicles (n = 24/ 12.7%), while (n = 96/ 51%) used the product in the presence of children. 57 participants (30.3%) started using e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation strategy, while 46 (24.4%) used it to manage smoking cravings. Most participants believed that e-cigarettes are addictive (n = 156/ 82.9%) and unhealthy (n = 139/ 73.9%).
