In this paper, we present a new approach to treat the electronic structure of a molecule in solution. Unlike the hybrid-type method, such as the reference interaction site model self-consistent-field theory, the new approach describes not only the electronic structure of solute but also solute–solvent interactions in terms of the quantum chemistry based on the Hartree–Fock frozen density formulation. In the treatment, the quantum effect due to solvent, including exchange repulsion, is projected on to the solute Hamiltonian using the spectral representation method. The solvent distribution around the solute is handled by the integral equation theory of liquids. As illustrative applications of the approach, the electronic and solvation structure of noble atoms, neon and argon, in liquid neon are studied. We also investigate the electronic structure of an excess electron in liquid helium. The preliminary results demonstrate that the quantum-mechanical effect on the electronic and solvation structure of the solute due to solvent molecules is successfully represented by the new method.In this paper, we present a new approach to treat the electronic structure of a molecule in solution. The complexity of the absorption spectrum of NO2NO2 can be attributed to a conical intersection of the potential energy surfaces of the two lowest electronic states, the electronic ground state of 2A12A1 symmetry and the first electronically excited state of 2B22B2 symmetry. In a previous paper we reported on the feasibility of using the hyperfine splittings, specifically the Fermi-contact interaction, to determine the electronic ground state character of the excited vibronic states in the region just above the conical intersection; 10 000 to 14 000 cm−114 000 cm−1 above the electronic ground state. High-resolution spectra of a number of vibronic bands in this region were measured by exciting a supersonically cooled beam of NO2NO2 molecules with a narrow-band Ti:Sapphire ring laser. The energy absorbed by the molecules was detected by the use of a bolometer. In the region of interest, rovibronic interactions play no significant role, with the possible exception of the vibronic band at 12 658 cm−1,12 658 cm−1, so that the fine- and hyperfine structure of each rotational transition could be analyzed by using an effective Hamiltonian. In the previous paper we restricted ourselves to an analysis of transitions of the K⎯=0K−=0 stack. In the present paper we extend the analysis to transitions of the K⎯=1K−=1 stack, from which, in addition to hyperfine coupling constants, values of the AA rotational constants of the excited NO2NO2 molecules can be determined. Those rotational constants also contain information about the electronic composition of the vibronic states, and, moreover, about the geometry of the NO2NO2 molecule in the excited state of interest. The results of our analyses are compared with those obtained by other authors. The conclusion arrived at in our previous paper that determining Fermi-constants is useful to help characterize the vibronic bands, is corroborated. We investigate the vibrational shift of beryllium oxide (BeO) in Xe matrix as well as in Ar matrix environments by mixed quantum-classical simulation and examine the origin of spectral shift in details. BeO is known to form strong chemical complex with single rare gas atom, and it is predicted from the gas phase calculations that vibrational frequencies are blueshifted by 78 cm^[-1] and 80 cm^[-1] upon formation of XeBeO and ArBeO, respectively. When the effects of other surrounding rare gas atoms are included by Monte Carlo simulations, it is found that the vibrational frequencies are redshifted by 21 cm^[-1] and 8 cm^[-1] from the isolated XeBeO and ArBeO complexes, respectively. The vibrational shift of XeBeO in Ar matrix is also calculated and compared with experimental data. In all simulations examined in this paper, the calculated vibrational frequency shifts from the isolated BeO molecule are in reasonable agreement with experimental values. The spectral shift due to the rare-gas-complex formation of RgBeO (Rg = Xe or Ar) is not negligible as seen in the previous studies, but it is shown in this paper that the effects of other surrounding rare gas atoms should be carefully taken into account for quantitative description of the spectral shifts and that these two effects are competing in vibrational spectroscopy of BeO in matrix environments.

This paper presents a detailed study of a water adlayer adsorbed on Pt(111) and Rh(111) surfaces using periodic density functional theory methods. The interaction between the metal surface and the water molecules is assessed from molecular dynamics simulation data and single point electronic structure calculations of selected configurations. It is argued that the electron bands around the Fermi level of the metal substrate extend over the water adlayer. As a consequence in the presence of the water layer the surface as a whole still maintains its metallic conductivity-a result of a crucial importance for understanding the process of electron transfer through the water/metal interface and electrochemical reactions in particular. Our results also indicate that there exists a weak bond between the hydrogen of the water and the Rh metal atoms as opposed to the widespread (classical) models based on purely repulsive interaction. This suggests that the commonly used classical interactions potentials adopted for large scale molecular dynamics simulations of water/metal interfaces may need revision. Two adsorption models of water on transition metals with the OH bonds pointing towards or away of the surface are also examined. It is shown that due to the very close values of their adsorption energies one should consider the real structure of water on the surface as a mixture of these simple "up" and "down" models. A model for the structure of the adsorbed water layer on Rh(111) is proposed in terms of statistical averages from molecular dynamics simulations.

Quasirelativistic theory of magnetic shielding constants based on the Douglas–Kroll–Hess transformation of the magnetic potential presented in a previous paper is extended to molecular systems that contain heavy elements. The gauge-including atomic orbital method is adapted to the quasirelativistic Hamiltonian to allow origin-independent calculations. The present theory is applied to the proton and halogen magnetic shielding constants of hydrogen halides and the 199Hg magnetic shielding constants and chemical shifts of mercury dihalides and methyl mercury halides. While the relativistic correction to the magnetic interaction term has little effect on the proton magnetic shielding constants, this correction is a dominant origin of the heavy atom shifts of the magnetic shielding constants of heavy halogens and mercury. In molecular J-aggregates one often observes an increase of the fluorescence decay time when increasing the temperature from 0 K. This phenomenon is usually attributed to the thermal population of the dark Frenkel exciton states that lie above the superradiant bottom state of the exciton band. In this paper, we study this effect for a homogeneous one-dimensional aggregate in a host medium and we model the scattering between different exciton states as arising from their coupling to the host vibrations. A Pauli master equation is used to describe the redistribution of excitons over the band. The rates entering this equation are calculated within the framework of first-order perturbation theory, assuming a linear on-site interaction between excitons and acoustic phonons. Solving the master equation numerically for aggregates of up to 100 molecules, we calculate the temperature dependence of the fluorescence kinetics in general and the decay time scale in particular. The proper definition of the fluorescence decay time is discussed in detail. We demonstrate that, even at a quantum yield of unity, the possibility to directly interpret fluorescence experiments in terms of a simple radiative time scale depends crucially on the initial excitation conditions in combination with the competition between spontaneous emission and intraband phonon-assisted relaxation.

In this paper we present the implementation of the two-component scaled zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) method in the molecular electronic structure package GAMESS-UK. It is the first application of this method, which was earlier investigated in the context of density functional theory, in molecular ab initio basis set calculations. The performance of the method is tested in atomic calculations, which we can compare with numerical results, on xenon and radon and in molecular calculations on the molecules AgH, HI, I2, AuH, TlH, and Bi2. In calculations on the I2 molecule we investigated the effect of the different approaches regarding the internal Coulomb matrix used in the ZORA method. For the remaining molecules we computed harmonic frequencies and bond lengths. It is shown that the scaled ZORA approach is a cost-effective alternative to the Dirac–Fock method.

Low-frequency intermolecular dynamics in liquids is studied by ultrafast four- and six-wave mixing. The theory of these nonlinear optical processes is given for electronically nonresonant optical interactions up to fifth order in the electric field. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation is used to separate the motional part of the response functions from coordinate independent electronic hyperpolarizabilities. A large variety of experiments, involving far-infrared absorption, ordinary Rayleigh-Raman or hyper Rayleigh-Raman scattering is covered by this theory. The response in nonresonant six-wave mixing comprises four dynamically different processes. It is shown that one of the terms contains information on the time scale(s) of intermolecular dynamics, that is not available from lower-order nonresonant experiments. For instance, homogenous and inhomogeneous contributions to line broadening can be distinguished. The optical response of harmonic nuclear motion is calculated for nonlinear coordinate dependence of the polarizabilities. Results for level-dependent and level-independent damping of the motion are compared. It is shown that level-dependent damping destroys the interference between different quantum mechanical pathways, yielding an extra contribution to the fifth-order response that has not been discussed before. When two or more nuclear modes determine the optical response, their relative contributions to the four- and six-wave mixing signals are in general different. These contributions are determined by the coordinate dependence of the electronic polarizability, which is usually not fully known, Model calculations are presented for the dynamic parameters of liquid CS2. The theory of this paper will be employed in Part II, to analyze experimental results on femtosecond four- and six-wave mixing.

The ground state structure for the CCCCCl radical was computed by using symmetry-adapted cluster configuration-interaction (SAC-CI) theory along with density functional theory to overcome the differences raised in the recently published paper [Y. Sumiyoshi et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. 414, 82 (2005)] between the theory and the experiment. SAC-CI results clearly support the earlier experimental conclusion that the radical has the bent ground state structure corresponding to 2Pi symmetry. Contrarily, probably due to spin contamination, mixing of a bent doublet ground state with the quartet components of a linear structure, coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) calculations were unable to provide reliable results. Results obtained using density functional theory also show that the radical has a bent structure. Some low-lying doublet excited states were also studied using the SAC-CI theory. The energy difference between the ground Pi state and the nearby Sigma state is around 0.2 eV. The excitation energy for the transition with the largest oscillator strength agrees with the strongest absorption peak.

This paper reports an ab initio CI calculation of the radiationless decay of the formaldehyde 1A2 state. First we derive quantitative conditions, which a basis set must satisfy if it is to be used for describing radiationless decay. We checked these conditions for the formaldehyde molecule and found them to be satisfied for the adiabatic Born–Oppenheimer set used in the calculation. We then derive a general equation for the coupling elements resulting from this basis set. With the method used, rotational coupling could be treated completely equivalent with vibrational coupling; this rotational coupling turned out to be not important in formaldehyde however. The coupling elements for D2CO are a factor 10 smaller than the corresponding ones in H2CO. The results of the calculation show, that the internal conversion in formaldehyde is an example of the so-called resonance case. Therefore the decay cannot be described by the model proposed by Yeung and Moore, where S1¿S0 internal conversion is the rate determining step in the photodissociation. Finally, we discuss the applicability of the ’’golden rule’’ in describing radiationless decay.

This paper reports an ab initio CI calculation of the radiative 1A1¿1A2 transition of H2CO and D2CO. Throughout the calculation the electronic wavefunctions and transition moments are explicitly calculated as functions of the nuclear geometry, contrary to the conventional Herzberg–Teller approach. The evaluation of the vibrational wavefunctions and integrals was made numerically. The results show that the excited state frequency for mode 3 has to be reassigned and that the calculated vibrational structure agrees well with the experimental intensities.
