How can non-classical logic contribute to the analysis of complexity in computer science? In this paper, we give a step towards this question, taking a logical model-theoretic approach to the analysis of complexity in fuzzy constraint satisfaction. We study fuzzy positive-primitive sentences, and we present an algebraic characterization of classes axiomatized by this kind of sentences in terms of homomorphisms and direct products. The ultimate goal is to study the expressiveness and reasoning mechanisms of non-classical languages, with respect to constraint satisfaction problems and, in general, in modelling decision scenarios. Data stream learning in non-stationary environments and skewed class distributions has been receiving more attention in machine learning communities. This paper proposes a novel ensemble classification method (ECSDS) for classifying data streams with skewed class distributions. In the proposed ensemble method, back-propagation neural network is selected as the base classifier. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method, we choose three baseline methods based on ECSDS and evaluate their overall performance on ten datasets from UCI machine learning repository. Moreover, the performance of incremental learning is also evaluated by these datasets. The experimental results show our proposed method can effectively deal with classification problems on non-stationary data streams with class imbalance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Verifying and specifying multi-agent systems in an appropriate inconsistency-tolerant logic are of growing importance in Computer Science since computer systems are generally used by or composed of inconsistency-tolerant multi-agents. In this paper, an inconsistency-tolerant logic for representing multi-agents is introduced as a Gentzen-type sequent calculus. This logic (or calculus) has multiple negation connectives that correspond to each agent, and these negation connectives have the property of paraconsistency that guarantees inconsistency-tolerance. The logic proposed is regarded as a modified generalization of trilattice logics, which are known to be useful for expressing fine-grained truth-values in computer networks. The completeness, cut-elimination and decidability theorems for the proposed logic (or sequent calculus) are proved as the main results of this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the International Journal of Uncertainty, Fuzziness and Knowledge-Based Systems published its first issue in 1993, it has made important contributions to the research field of computer science. In this study, based on the dataset of the publications published in this journal between 1993 and 2016 retrieved from Web of Science, a general overview of this journal is performed using bibliometric methods and visualized networks. First, the productive and influential publications, authors, institutions, countries/territories, and supraregions are analysed based on the total number of citations, publications, and different citation thresholds. Second, network visualization analysis is applied to illustrate the links and connections between terms by using the VOSviewer software. Moreover, the most cited journals and common author keywords of three continents, including North America, Europe, and Asia, are also presented. This paper introduces strict fuzzy orderings in the framework of similarity-based fuzzy orderings, i.e. where a context of similarity/indistinguishability is given by means of a fuzzy equivalence relation. We consider how to construct strict fuzzy orderings from partial fuzzy orderings and vice versa. The appropriateness of the concepts introduced in this paper is underlined by theoretical results and examples. We observe that the strongest results are achieved if the underlying triangular norm induces an involutive residual negation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Data Mining, a central step in the broader overall process of Knowledge Discovery from Databases, concerns with discovering useful properties, called patterns, from data. Understandability is an essential — yet rarely tackled — feature that makes resulting patterns accessible by end users. In this paper we argue that the adoption of Fuzzy Logic for Data Mining can improve understandability of derived patterns. Indeed, Fuzzy Logic is able to represent concepts in a “human-centric” way. Hence, Data Mining methods based on Fuzzy Logic may potentially meet the so-called “Comprehensibility Postulate”, which characterizes the blurry notion of understandability. However, the mere adoption of Fuzzy Logic for Data Mining is not enough to achieve understandability. This paper describes and comments a number of issues that need to be addressed to provide for understandable patterns. In this paper, we first give the formula of possibility degree to rank the Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy numbers. Two methods called Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy weighted average (IFWA) and Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy weighted geometric mean (IFWGM) are developed to solve the multiple attribute decision making problems under Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy environment, in which the performance ratings of alternatives and relative importance of attributes are expressed with Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy sets. The IFWA and IFWGM methods, respectively, are treated as an auxiliary pair of fractional programming models and two linear programming (LP) solution procedures are proposed simultaneously by using Charnes and Cooper transformation. Furthermore, two algorithms which are based on the IFWA and IFWGM models, respectively, are developed to solve Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy decision making problems where attribute values and weights of attributes are all in Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy numbers. The order relationship between IFWA and IFWGM are investigated. Finally, a numerical example is illustrated to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Database integration is an important discipline for constructing heterogeneous multidatabases on one hand. On the other hand, fuzzy information has been introduced into databases and studied extensively. One of the main problems in integration of multidatabases developed in different sites is resolution of conflicts. This problem becomes very complex when databases contain fuzzy information. Little has been reported on integrating fuzzy multidatabases so far. In this paper, we focus on integrating possibility-based fuzzy relational databases. The new types of conflicts arising in schema level and instance level in the fuzzy multidatabase integration are identified. The resolutions of the new types of conflicts are proposed. In particular, a method for identifying the entities in the fuzzy multidatabase integration with incompatible keys is developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We introduce in this paper a new type of extended attribute reduction called M-reducts for an inconsistent decision table, which is defined to preserve the membership degree to a maximum decision class for each object of the table. It is shown that a M-reduct can actually preserve more decision information than it does by definition, including the maximum decision class itself and all deterministic decision information. Compared with other types of extended attribute reductions, the proposed type of attribute reduction is a better trade-off between the knowledge preserving capability and reduction efficiency. Illustrative examples are given and an effective algorithm for computing a M-reduct based on two summation functions of attribute sets is proposed together with its complexity analysis. The comparison of sets of objects is a research topic with applications in diverse fields such as computer science, biology and psychology. Since the introduction of the Jaccard index, many techniques have been proposed. This paper aims at extending an existing framework of comparison indices for sets. Firstly, the novel indices account for similarities between elements, rather than identity of elements as is the case for existing techniques. As a result, a richer framework of comparison indices is obtained. The use of fuzzy quantifiers in this framework is shown. Secondly, the machinery for sets is extended to the case of multisets, which results in two classes of comparison indices. The first class considers each element instance as a separate element, while the second class considers groups of elements instances as an atomic entity. The number of instances is then a property of this group, that is taken into account when calculating similarity between element groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are well established methods for fuzzy clustering especially for the cases where the feature values are numerical of ratio or interval scale. Not so well established are methods to be applied when the feature values are ordinal or nominal. In that case there is no one best method it seems. This paper discusses a method where unknown numeric variables are assigned to the ordinal values. Part of minimizing an objective function for the clustering is to find numeric values for these variables. Thus real numbers of interval scale and even ratio scale for that matter are assigned to the original ordinal values. The method uses the same objective function as used in fuzzy c-means clustering but both the membership function and the ordinal to real mapping are determined by gradient descent. Since the ordinal to real mapping is not known it cannot be verified for its legitimacy. However the ordinal to real mapping that is found is best in terms of the clustering produced. This paper presents different techniques to visualize high-dimensional fuzzy rule bases in relation to the classified data. The degree of membership to influential rules can be visualized for an entire data set. This enables the observer to detect conflicting or error-prone rules as well as misclassified feature vectors. Results are shown on a benchmark data set and on a weather data set that is used to predict flight durations on a major European airport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a bibliometric study of the computational intelligence field is presented. Bibliometric maps showing the associations between the main concepts in the field are provided for the periods 1996–2000 and 2001–2005. Both the current structure of the field and the evolution of the field over the last decade are analyzed. In addition, a number of emerging areas in the field are identified. It turns out that computational intelligence can best be seen as a field that is structured around four important types of problems, namely control problems, classification problems, regression problems, and optimization problems. Within the computational intelligence field, the neural networks and fuzzy systems subfields are fairly intertwined, whereas the evolutionary computation subfield has a relatively independent position. In this paper we propose a new definition of gradual dependence as a special kind of association rule. We propose a way to adapt existing association rule mining algorithms for the new task of mining such dependencies, and we discuss about its complexity. Resampling methods are among the best approaches to determine the number of clusters in prototype-based clustering. The core idea is that with the right choice for the number of clusters basically the same cluster structures should be obtained from subsamples of the given data set, while a wrong choice should produce considerably varying cluster structures. In this paper I give an overview how such resampling approaches can be transferred to fuzzy and probabilistic clustering. I study several cluster comparison measures, which can be parameterized with t-norms, and report experiments that provide some guidance which of them may be the best choice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an adaptive network architecture, which can emulate the human knowledge as the fuzzy logic rule, and its applications as the controller for nonlinear systems. The structure of this proposed network, multi-input Fuzzy Rule Emulated Network or FREN, is derived based on human knowledge in the form of fuzzy IF-THEN rules. The initial setting of its parameters can be intuitively chosen from expert's experience. During the learning phase based on the gradient search, the learning rate can be adapted itself to remain the stability with the Lyapunov method. The performance of our network is presented by using this network as controller for the single invert pendulum plant and the water bath temperature control system. The comparison results with other conventional control algorithms such as artificial neural networks and PID controllers can be illustrated in each example. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with the possibility of using ARTMAP neural network for searching fingerprint patterns from a large database. ARTMAP has the ability to perform concurrent processing, to learn fast, and to make decisions. Since ARTMAP learning is self-stabilizing, it can continue to learn from one or more databases, without performance degradation, until its full memory capacity is utilized. Generally, fingerprint matching is based on local ridge characteristics, and its efficiency depends on minutiae extraction. The paper deals with division situations where individual claims can vary within closed intervals. Uncertainty of claims is removed by weighting in a consistent way the upper and lower bounds of the claim intervals. Deterministic division problems with the obtained compromise claims are then considered and classical division rules from the bankruptcy literature are used to generate several procedures leading to efficient and reasonable rules for division problems under interval uncertainty of claims. This paper deals with the problem of establishing a new class of aggregation operators, which are close to the averaging, without being necessarily idempotent. An axiomatic approach is followed through the definition of crucial properties which characterize these aggregators, the mathematical consequences are illustrated and many examples that extend some important classical averaging operators are shown.
