Giving a voice to youth and promoting their health and well-being is essential for successful future communities. However, millions of youth, particularly in low-to middle-income countries, are misunderstood, lack a voice, and face many challenges, which maintains their disengagement. As approaches for youth engagement evolve, this paper presents an innovative, qualitative methodology to engage vulnerable youth (NEETs - acronym for youth who are Not in Education, Employment or Training) in identifying and ranking their needs and giving them a voice to contribute to prevention programming. Drawing on principles of empowerment theory, the paper expands on the popular youth-adult partnerships' literature by injecting a new engagement approach that focuses on (i) using a literature-based community needs assessment, (ii) engaging vulnerable youth in small group discussion to rank their needs, (iii) comparing rankings between groups, (iv) creating spaces for youth to include other pressing issues not identified in the literature, and (iv) comparing rankings across surrounding communities. The ideas presented demonstrate that the Needs Ranking activity, as an engagement and data collection tool, may be particularly relevant in gathering viewpoints and opinions of underserved youth. These youth are traditionally not well represented through the more conventional and common methods currently employed in research and community development such as local government community development board meetings and needs assessments, and research interviews. The aim of this paper is to show the potential value of using the constructivist grounded theory (CGT) methodology in the Urban and Regional Planning discipline. This is done by reflecting on the application of the CGT fundamentals defined by Kathy Charmaz, applied in a doctoral thesis in Urban and Regional Planning. The substantive area of research in which the thesis took place was the practical training experience of planners in becoming professionally registered. The thesis collected primary data through interviews with 14 planners who have undergone the process of practical training to record, document, and analyse their experiences as a prerequisite and requirement of professional registration. The use of the CGT methodology provides valuable insight into the registration process of planners in South Africa and encourages doctoral candidates to use CGT methodology with the aim of generating new knowledge and theory in the built environment. When conducting research, it is fundamentally important to adhere to universal ethical principles with the intent to minimise harm and maximise benefits. This is not always relevant as these principles are based on the Western way of doing things. In Western culture, the focus of ethics is mainly on individualism and this value undermines the essence of ubuntu. However, in the South African context, the individual is always seen in relation to significant others, meaning that relational philosophies need to inform context-specific ethics in these communities. This paper aims to advocate for the utilisation of contextually relevant ethical principles to embrace diverse South African contexts. The paper is based on the author's reflexive practice in conducting research in South Africa's rural areas. The reflection focuses on the researcher's dilemma in implementing universal ethical principles in a rural South African context. The paper highlights congruent ethical approaches in a diverse African context guided by relational ethics which is grounded in ubuntu principles. COVID-19 ushered in public health guidelines restricting face-to-face contact and movement, and encouraging social distancing, all of which had implications for conducting field-based research during the pandemic. For qualitative researchers, this meant adapting conventional face-to-face methods and resorting to virtual variations of the same in adherence to stipulated COVID-19 health protocols. Virtual qualitative research introduced new concerns and logistical challenges. This paper presents critical reflections on experiences of conducting qualitative research during the pandemic, from the perspectives of a cohort of postgraduate fellows. A critical reflection framework was utilised to explore fellows experiences and meanings ascribed to their experiences. The research findings illustrate three overarching processes which, in turn, shaped ways of thinking, doing and being. First, explicating tacit assumptions about their anticipated research journeys and interrogating these. Second, shifts in power differentials demonstrated by role reversal between researchers and participants, and between fellows and supervisors as they re-negotiated their positionalities in virtual research spaces. Third, context specific sense-making, in which - narrative accounts support the notion of knowledge as a social construct. Our findings have important implications for qualitative research practice. Our study documents methodological nuances and social implications of conducting qualitative research during COVID-19 and in a-South African context. In addition, our study exemplifies the use of critical reflection in qualitative research practice in the specific context of postgraduate academic research. Introduction: This study used Lekgotla discussion with Batlokwa women to formulate and verify the strategies to empower the women with traditional and cultural dysmenorrhea or pain period knowledge. The Lekgotla discussion is an open forum in which indigenous communities in Sub-Saharan Africa use to debate and reach agreements on community raised issues. It has the potential to identify issues that affect community day-to-day lives and reach consensus to effect changes. Purpose: To present Lekgotla discussion workshop as a decolonized qualitative research methodology. Methods: The study was qualitative, using a Lekgotla discussion process among women with a variety of experience in both Indigenous and Western dysmenorrhea knowledge. Participants were purposively selected to participate in a Lekgotla discussion. The snowballing was also used, whereby the recruited participants were asked to assist in identifying and referring potential participants to the researcher, who contacted them for potential inclusion in the study. The process was repeated until a required sample was reached. A facilitator was selected by the participants to facilitate the discussion and summarizes the inputs once all the participants have raised their ideas and there was no newer information was shared. The debates and dialogues were analysed by the researcher and experts using content data analysis. Results: The Lekgotla discussion followed a workshop process and was divided into four steps: 1) Arrival and Welcome, 2) Engaging participants, 3) Reaching consensus on the strategies to empower Batlokwa women with dysmenorrhea knowledge, 4) Verification and refinement of the strategies to empower Batlokwa women with dysmenorrhea knowledge. Conclusion: The success of applying the process of Lekgotla discussion proved that the indigenous epistemologies are increasingly accepted to achieve research objectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents WhatsApp as a means of data collection among vulnerable populations, reporting on a study conducted in South Africa and Zimbabwe, to determine the terminology used for and among different genders and sexually diverse individuals. 19 LGBTIQ+ individuals, recruited through a modified snowballing technique, participated in the study. Using WhatsApp text-based information, the interview questions and information regarding the study and ethics-related information were forwarded from one participant to another. The same approach was used for data-collection purposes, where responses (either voice notes or written texts) were forwarded until they reached the initial two participants and/or the principal investigator. Data were analysed using Collazi's steps for data analysis. As the study focus was on the data collection technique, the paper highlights the ethical implications related to using WhatsApp as a data collecting tool. The study also indicates the advantages and disadvantages of using this platform and further emphasises that voice note WhatsApp messages yielded higher-quality and more in-depth responses than text messages. In this paper, we critically reflect on our conceptualization and operationalization of "rapid photovoice" as a close-up, emancipatory, action research methodology which has multiple, intersecting social-justice goals; and consider the methodology's potential for helping to achieve such goals. We first consider photovoice in relation to its typical use in public health research, as well as in prior research into student experiences of higher education. We then consider our pragmatic redesign of the methodology as rapid photovoice (RPV), which we conceptualized in response to the goals, parameters, and constraints inherent in our project, which studied student movement violence and wellbeing. In the third part of the article, we describe and discuss our operationalization of RPV in this study on four university campuses in South Africa. In the fourth section, we reflect on some of the ethical considerations arising from the topic and the methodology. In the final section of the article, we critically assess the interim outcomes of our use of RPV in terms of (1) psychologically empowering students to reflect on traumatic experiences in a safe space and enhancing their self-awareness of wellbeing, wellbeing resources and coping strategies; (2) the politically emancipatory potential of photovoice to represent student experiences authentically and with immediacy to higher education policy role-players, and (3) its ability to co-create artifacts of collective memory that provide authentic empirical material for making trustworthy knowledge claims. Fieldwork challenges involving hard-to-reach populations and with which many novice researchers grapple are apparent. However, literature on the issues related to female researchers' experiences with hard-to-reach populations like undocumented foreign migrants is scarce. This article reflects on local female researchers' fieldwork experiences during a study on the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on foreign migrants operating informal businesses in the downtown area of Bloemfontein, South Africa. Our findings highlight unique challenges confronted by local female researchers compared to their male counterparts, including the risk of physical and emotional harm. Despite these challenges, female researchers play a vital role in accessing and understanding hard-to-reach populations, contributing immensely to the fieldwork research process. We also recognize the influence of contextual factors, such as xenophobia, on fieldwork dynamics, emphasizing the need to consider broader socio-political factors during fieldwork. To foster more inclusive research practices, we advocate for the involvement of members from hard-to-reach populations as integral members of the research team, offering their invaluable insider perspectives, knowledge and cultural milieu. Looking ahead, we call for greater support for women in research, including gender-sensitive training, and increased awareness of gender-based risks during fieldwork. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores the utility of the I-poem methodology to investigate subjective well-being in children and adolescents with ADHD in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic. Subjective well-being in this population has been studied extensively via quantitative methodologies. In addition, narrative studies, discourse and theme analysis, participatory and visual method studies have also contributed to deeper understandings in the field. The current study seeks to contribute to knowledge creation within this field of non-numerical studies in an attempt to decentralise the voice of researchers and highlight the voices of participants. In the I-poem methodology, self-report ratings of children and adolescents with ADHD between the ages of 10 and 18 years old (n = 376) during the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa was captured in an open-ended question. Data was analysed through the researcher's creation of themed I-poems. The findings delineate broad categories of positive, negative and neutral feelings of subjective well-being during the pandemic. Notions of subjective well-being are related to themes of home, school, social life, self-growth and reflection, experiences of change, rules, extra-curricular activities, concerns, loss, finances, the new normal, and emotions. The study illustrates the utility of the I-poem methodology to illuminate dimensions of well-being that may otherwise remain invisible. This article explores the use of the phenomenological approach in the learning experiences of homosexual learners in schools. We conducted the research at a time when studies in education rarely use Heidegger's phenomenological approach to explore educational phenomena. The question is: what are the lessons that can be learnt from the use of Heidegger's phenomenological approach in exploring the learning experiences of homosexual learners in rural secondary schools of South Africa? The study used a phenomenological design in a number of selected secondary schools in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. We generated data through semi-structured interviews and documents. We purposively selected six learners to participate in the study. Data were analysed by using a thematic approach. The approach helped us to reveal that homosexual learners were discriminated against by their teachers and were subjected to isolation from other learners due to religious beliefs, cultural norms, and traditional practices. The article argues that the use of the Heidegger's phenomenological approach is more appropriate in unravelling nuances related to beliefs, cultural practices, and traditions that may hamper effective teaching and learning than the use of other designs such as surveys. The implication of this is that Heidegger's phenomenological approach is helpful in conducting studies on the lived experiences of people who are discriminated in society, focusing on their well-being, support and care for their future. It also has the potential to contribute immensely towards policy formulation related to inclusive teaching and learning using learners' voices based on their lived experiences. A research paradigm represents how a researcher views the nature of reality and guides how they engage in research to generate knowledge from that reality. Power is a construct that impacts on the individual actions of the researcher and the participants, and their interactions with each other, across a range of perspectives of reality. Qualitative researchers select different paradigmatic stances to represent how they consider and work with the influences of power on these human relations. This influences their decisions about which research design and methodology they select. Drawing on my doctoral study, which explored the process by which a group of occupational therapists designed an intervention for caregivers of children on anti-retroviral treatment living in low-income conditions in South Africa, I describe my process of selecting a poststructuralist paradigm, an instrumental case study design, and a co-operative inquiry methodology to illuminate the operation of power in the research process. An overview of the potential offerings and limitations of different paradigms, research designs and methods, as applied to this research example, are presented to support my assertions. In conclusion, I argue for the more consistent consideration and description of the interplay between paradigms, research design and methodology, to ensure the selection of the best suited combination to explore and describe the influences of power in the research process. Longitudinal qualitative methodologies have gained increased attention in health and social science research as an appropriate methodology to explore participants' experiences of change over time but is a challenging methodology to implement. We reflect on the methodological aspects of a novel longitudinal 'mixed' mixed-methods study using quantitative and qualitative methods with both individuals and groups, employing various participatory approaches. We focus on key learnings from our study including the use of a structured recruitment process to minimise loss to follow up, and issues of reflexivity when researchers and participants have a similar background. In addition, like many large mixed-methods longitudinal studies we experienced challenges determining sample size and managing and analysing a large dataset. There is a need for establishing clear guidelines for determining sample size, addressing reflexivity and managing large datasets. Examining the researcher's position during the research process is important to enhance the representation of research participants and the local context where knowledge is produced. This article aims to reflect the experiences of a local researchers' insider–outsider position during a qualitative study drawing on ethnographic methods. Familiarity with the research community can be advantageous for an insider researcher position while an outsider researcher position may be enable more observance of aspects of daily life to which insiders may be blinded during the inquiry, interpretation, and data analysis. Researchers who often strive for a balance between the two positions can find it challenging yet rewarding. In this study, research participants played a critical role in shaping the local researcher's dual identity as the outsider position remained at the forefront of interactions with the research process despite familiarity with the local language, culture, and research setting. This view, however, shifted after the local researcher seemed to have "earned" the insider position. Local researchers need to invest in extensive self-reflexivity, acknowledge the vulnerabilities of dual positionality, and capitalize on the shared qualities and differences with research participants to enhance the representation of research participants in the process of knowledge production. Decolonization of research is nowhere more pressing than in post-apartheid South Africa, where cross-cultural encounters characterize every aspect of society. The health system plays a critical role in realizing the rights of marginalized populations, particularly rural communities and people with disabilities. However, cultural divides between service users and health care workers render health care provision unexpectedly complex. Such divides likewise obscure the meanings embedded in qualitative data, rendering research interpretations challenging. A study of the engagement between rural isiXhosa-speaking people with disabilities and primary health care workers was conducted by the first author, a White English-speaking female health care worker, in partnership with the second author, a Xhosa male research implementer. Ethnographic and narrative methods were used to create an embedded case study of 11 households of people with disabilities. Lessons on conducting ethical and culturally congruent research with this population are presented, important limitations in the qualitative paradigm raised, and alternative stances explored. Appropriate data generation methods are key to a successful research project to attain rich and relevant data. When doing research with children, the methods selected should be age appropriate and enable them to contribute their ideas in the research process. However, data generation with children is not "child's play"-it is a challenging task that requires careful design on the part of the researcher. We conducted a study in South Africa with children between the ages of 9 and 14 who were orphaned and rendered vulnerable by HIV and AIDS in order to explore if, and how, the use of participatory visual methods might enhance resilience. In this article, we provide a reflective account of the research process and discuss lessons learnt from our experiences of using drawings and collage as data generation methods when doing research with children. This article contributes to the literature on the use of participatory visual methods as data generation strategies with children highlighting some caveats and offering insight into how challenges could be circumvented. This article describes a conceptual framework for exploring sustainable diets, using a case study example of ongoing research in the Vaalharts region, a rural setting in South Africa. A qualitative research approach is followed with an integrated transdisciplinary mixed methods research design with multiple concurrent components employed during two sequential phases. A successful application of the framework is achieved through a collaborative team effort of researchers with qualitative and quantitative research expertise transcending different disciplines, as well as participation of community members throughout the research process.
