Background: Children with communication disorders experience difficulty in one or more areas of articulation and speech, language, fluency, voice and social communication, and they work with speech‐language pathologists (SLPs) to improve their communication. With the rise of adoption and use for mobile applications among special education and healthcare service providers, SLPs also have implemented, and for some, contributed to the design of, mobile applications (apps) during clinical practice. However, how these mobile apps are designed and implemented for clinicians to facilitate their clients' communication and learning experiences during therapy remains underinvestigated. Aims: This qualitative research study investigated how mobile apps were designed for clinicians to target assessment and intervention goals. Additionally, it focused on how clinicians adopted these apps while integrating therapy techniques to facilitate their clients' learning. Methods and Procedures: Informed by the Research, Practice, and Design for iPad Apps (iRPD) framework and the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR), semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 37 licensed pediatric SLPs, including 23 SLPs who have used apps and 14 SLPs who have contributed to the design of their own mobile apps. Two rounds of qualitative coding via template analysis and thematic analysis were then used to analyse client and clinician characteristics, clinical practice, therapy tools, app characteristics, influential factors and app design and use recommendations. Outcomes and Results: Results showed SLPs utilise different genres of assistive, educational and recreational game apps to support children's communication development when working with children who have diverse disorders and therapy needs across different age groups. SLPs who have designed their own apps emphasised the importance of following evidence‐based practice, well‐researched teaching methods and learning theories. Additionally, multiple financial, sociocultural, political and ethical factors contributed to the design, adoption and implementation of mobile apps during services. Conclusions and Implications: By understanding the clinician's app use practices situated in various therapy activities and techniques, we specified a list of design recommendations for app designers who are interested in creating mobile apps for supporting children's speech and language development. By bringing insights from both clinical practitioners as well as those with additional technical design backgrounds, this study contributes to the understanding of clinical practice needs and strategies and will lead to the most optimal app design and adoption practice to support the well‐being of children with communication disorders. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject: Speech language pathologist (SLPs) implement mobile apps for clients with diverse therapy needs, and their app adoption and use are influenced by multifaceted factors. Although prior studies have reported SLPs' mobile app use, additional information is still needed. For example, the research literature does not include how specific technology is used during therapy practice, or specific details about challenges and needs in implementing and utilising the technology. Additional research also needs to include influential factors (e.g., financial, sociocultural, political, ethical) that are considered when selecting, implementing, assessing and designing an app. The lack of research in these areas directly affects the understanding of clinical mobile technology practices and further hinders clinicians' abilities to advocate for better clinical and design decisions towards identifying and implementing effective mobile apps that facilitate children's communication. What this study adds to existing knowledge: This qualitative study is the first known empirical research that interviewed pediatric speech‐language pathologists who have used and designed mobile apps for children who receive speech‐language therapy across different clinical settings. By investigating experiences from clinician stakeholders to illustrate a holistic overview of app design and development to deployment, this study reported finding on (1) how clinicians use mobile apps to help children to participate in different therapy activities, and (2) a list of recommended design and development guidelines that informs the design and use of mobile apps that best support and motivate children to engage in therapy. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: This study disseminates clinician‐reported practices of app design and use with pediatric clients across different speech‐language disorders, and identifies gaps and needs for clinicians and researchers who are interested in understanding the role of mobile technology in relationship to human communication and interaction. Additionally, the paper demonstrates that SLPs have instrumental roles rather than passive users in influencing the design and implementation of different genres of mobile apps through evidence‐based clinical practice, and call for partnerships across clinicians, special educators and technologists to support children's communication development. Background: Many amateur singers enjoy singing in choirs. They are likely to lack the training and expertise of professional singers and this may have an impact on their vocal health. Aims: To assess the experiences of amateur singers, their use of warm‐up and cool‐down sessions, their vocal health, their sources of help and advice and their reactions to receiving a diagnosis and treatment. Methods and Procedures: A questionnaire was sent to amateur choir singers. Quantitative data on their use of warm‐up and cool‐down activities were collected and the singers rated how frequently they experienced adverse voice symptoms after singing. Qualitative data were collected from singers who had sought advice about their voice and from those who had received a diagnosis and treatment. Outcome and Results: Most choirs used warm‐up sessions but few used cool‐down. Singers who participated in choir warm‐ups experienced significantly less vocal symptoms. Individual warm‐ups were ineffective. Singers who had previously had a diagnosis continued to have significantly higher symptom scores. A quarter of the singers who had neither sought help nor had a diagnosis had high scores. Singers appeared uncertain about who to consult for help. Those who saw a speech and language therapist were much more likely to receive a diagnosis and treatment either by the therapist or by referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist. Those receiving treatment were mainly positive about it and likely to complete a course of therapy. Conclusions and Implications: Warm‐up sessions performed by choirs are helpful in avoiding voice symptoms and are recommended. The presence of singers who are unaware of potential damage to their voices is a concern. A simple rating system, as used in this research, may act to alert them to the dangers. Choir leaders could be more active in advising singers and refer them to professionals where necessary. Speech and language therapists appear more sensitive to their problems and could be a first point of contact. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject: Poor vocal health may occur in amateur singers and lead to voice disorders which will reduce the demonstrated benefits of regular singing. They may be less aware than professional singers of potential hazards and may not know how to sing in a way that ensures good vocal health. There has been less research on the extent of voice problems in amateurs or of the actions they may take to resolve the vocal difficulties they encounter. What this paper adds to the existing knowledge: This survey demonstrates that choir warm‐ups were effective in helping to avoid common symptoms associated with voice problems. A large minority of singers who had not sought help for voice problems had high symptom scores on our assessment. Singers frequently turned to a singing teacher for help. Those who consulted a speech and language therapist were much more likely to be referred for further investigation and treatment. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: We present a simple subjective measure of symptom severity which succeeds in distinguishing between singers who warm up their voices and those who do not and between singers who have received a past diagnosis and those who have not. There are a number of indications in this research that amateur singers are unsure if they need help and are uncertain who can offer it. Background: A number of practice barriers (e.g., time constraints, patient comorbidities and competing demands) exist as regards the evidence‐based assessment of adult language within the acute hospital setting. There is need for an evidence‐based, diagnostically validated, adaptable, comprehensive and efficient aphasia assessment. The Brisbane Evidence Based Language Test (EBLT) was developed to meet this need for a clinically appropriate and diagnostically robust assessment measure. Since the release of the EBLT, there has been no detailed investigation into speech and language therapists' (SLT) use and perceptions of the assessment. To inform future research and improvements to the EBLT, a better understanding of current language assessment practices, use and thoughts on the EBLT are required. Aims: To investigate SLTs' current language assessment practices; and to explore the current usage and future directions of the Brisbane EBLT. Methods & Procedures: A convergent parallel mixed‐methods study design with an electronic survey was utilized. The survey consisted of 16 multiple‐choice, multiple‐answer and free‐text questions that explored respondents' perceptions of current language assessment measures, ideal language assessment features, Brisbane EBLT use, positives and negatives, and future directions for the EBLT. The survey was developed on Qualtrics and disseminated via email, social media and professional networks. Snowball sampling was used. Study inclusion criteria required participants to be qualified SLTs with clinical experience working with patients with aphasia. Quantitative data were analysed via descriptive and correlative statistics, and qualitative data were analysed via content analysis. Outcomes & Results: The survey was completed by 115 SLTs from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, the UK, Canada, France, Lebanon and Belgium. Many respondents identified that a range of assessments is required to meet SLT clinical needs in the assessment of aphasia. Key desirable assessment features reported were: comprehensive, efficient, evidence‐based, responsive and flexible. The EBLT was the most frequently used standardized measure reported by respondents (used by 78.63%). The EBLT reportedly has many positive features; however, respondents indicated dislike of the form layout, scoring and responsiveness. The majority of respondents indicated that the development of additional EBLT tests (94.29%) and additional cut‐off scores (95.15%) would benefit their clinical practice. Conclusions & Implications: The study findings indicate that SLT assessment of language is complex and multifaceted. While the EBLT is reportedly used widely by SLTs, respondents identified areas for further research which would optimize the test's usability within their practice, to ultimately improve patient outcomes. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject: Previous studies have explored existing SLT adult language assessment practices within acute settings; however, the most recent comprehensive study was completed in 2010. In 2020, the development, diagnostic validation, intra‐ and interrater reliability of the Brisbane EBLT were published. As of yet there has not been an investigation into clinician use and perspectives of the assessment since its release. What this paper adds to existing knowledge: This study provides contemporary data about international aphasia assessment practices, as well as descriptive and qualitative information on the current use of the Brisbane EBLT, and the positives, negatives, and future directions for the assessment measure. It additionally implies that a large proportion of SLTs believe that it is best practice to use multiple language assessment measures and select these based on the patient's presentation and context. Background: Dysphagia impacts negatively on quality of life, however there is little in‐depth qualitative research on these impacts from the perspective of people with dysphagia. Aims: To examine the lived experiences and views of people with lifelong or ongoing dysphagia on the impacts of dysphagia and its interventions on quality of life, and barriers and facilitators to improved quality of life related to mealtimes. Methods & Procedures: Nine adults with lifelong or acquired chronic dysphagia engaged in in‐depth interviews and a mealtime observation. The observations were recorded and scored using the Dysphagia Disorders Survey (DDS). Interviews were recorded, transcribed and de‐identified before content thematic and narrative analysis, and verification of researcher interpretations. Outcomes & Results: Participants presented with mild to severe dysphagia as assessed by the DDS. They viewed that dysphagia and its interventions reduced their quality of life and that they had 'paid a high price' in terms of having reduced physical safety, reduced choice and control, poor mealtime experiences, and poor social engagement. As part of their management of dysphagia, participants identified several barriers to and facilitators for improved quality of life including: being involved in the design of their meals, being adaptable, having ownership of swallowing difficulties, managing the perceptions of others and resisting changes to oral intake. Conclusions & Implications: This research improves understanding of the primary concerns of people with dysphagia about their mealtime experiences and factors impacting on their quality of life. Clinicians working with people with dysphagia need to consider how self‐determination, autonomy and freedom of choice could be improved through involvement in food design of texture‐modified foods. It is important that future research considers the views of health professionals on how these findings could impact on policy and practice particularly in ways to address the barriers and enhance facilitators to improved quality of life for people with dysphagia. Research to date has focused on people with dysphagia associated with an acquired health condition and has used quantitative assessment methods to measure quality of life. Background: Improving the quality of life for individuals with severe dysphagia is a priority when considering new areas of dysphagia management, especially if this increases opportunities to participate in social activities associated with eating and drinking. Edible foam is widely researched and available in the food industry; however, the use of edible foam within the field of dysphagia remains unexplored. Despite no research published on effectiveness and safety, a commercial product currently on the market is widely distributed across both Europe and the UK, including 28 NHS Trusts, suggesting that it is increasingly being used in clinical practice. Aims: To explore the perceptions and experiences of healthcare professionals on the use of stabilized edible foam (SEF) with adults with severe dysphagia in order to inform areas for future research in this novel dysphagia intervention. Methods & Procedures: Healthcare professionals were recruited using purposeful sampling and snowballing technique. A total of 56 healthcare professionals were initially approached, of which 10 completed the semi‐structured interviews. Interview questions were developed from a topic guide and a pilot questionnaire. Outcomes & Results: Thematic analysis was used to identify three themes: potential impact, consideration of risk and perceived experiences. Overarching each of these themes was the element of the unknown. Conclusions & Implications: Use of SEF with adults with dysphagia is in its infancy. Whilst results indicate that some clinicians are embracing this novel approach, others express concerns. Therefore, further research is needed, particularly in relation of direct experience of individuals and contra‐indications. What this paper adds: What is already known on the subject: The use of SEF with individuals with swallowing problems is a relatively novel area of dysphagia intervention in the UK. Background: Despite the importance of delivering speech and language therapy services to children who stutter (CWS), there are barriers to accessing speech and language therapy. One way to improve access for those who may otherwise be deprived of speech and language therapy services, including CWS, is through telepractice (TP). However, there is currently no evidence as to the viability of TP stuttering assessments for CWS. Aim: To investigate the validity and reliability, and acceptability of using a TP application to assess overt stuttering behaviour children aged 6–15 years. Methods & Procedure: A total of 30 CWS, aged between 6 and 15 years, were recruited from a speech therapy clinic in King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Children were divided into two testing conditions, either face‐to‐face (f2f)‐led or TP‐led testing, and the Stuttering Severity Instrument (SSI‐IV) was administered, percentage of syllables stuttered (%SS) was calculated, and severity ratings (SR) assigned, either via f2f or via TP using two laptops with webcams, video conference software and a broadband internet connection. Agreement and reliability of scoring in the two testing conditions were reported in addition to findings from questionnaires exploring children's and their caregivers' perceptions both before and immediately after the TP assessment was carried out. Outcome & Results: A total of 30 sessions were successfully carried out, with results revealing unsatisfactory levels of agreement when applying the Bland and Altman method. However, when discrepancies were found, these were comparable with those from traditional f2f studies. Generally, parents and children exhibited high levels of satisfaction and held a positive view regarding TP pre‐ and post‐assessment. Conclusions & Implications: The results of the study suggest that conducting an overt stuttering assessment via TP for 6–15‐year‐olds CWS is reliable and valid. Although the TP model posed some (mainly technical) challenges for executing the assessment, high levels of satisfaction were recorded by parents and children alike. The TP system and equipment chosen in this study has provided a basis for the delivery of TP overt stuttering assessment in a clinical setting, thus addressing the barriers to access that are present for CWS. These results are preliminary, but they can be seen as a building block for future research in TP assessment studies for CWS. What this paper adds: What is already known on the subject: Stuttering treatment via TP has been proven to be feasible and successful across a variety of treatment programs (e.g., Lidcombe, Camperdown). However, the viability of assessing stuttering via videoconferencing has never been explored in children. Background: Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a condition which affects an individual's ability to use and understand language. Terminological confusion, and the use of non‐evidence‐based diagnostic criteria has impacted access to services for this population for several decades. Changes in terminology and diagnosis were proposed as part of a UK‐based consensus study, Criteria and Terminology Applied to Language Impairments (CATALISE), in 2016 and 2017. Since the publication of the recommendations, there have been active efforts across several English‐speaking countries to support uptake of these recommendations into policy and practice. Aims: The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of individuals who have been leading the dissemination of the CATALISE recommendations since their publication in 2017. The study was undertaken to inform future implementation efforts aimed at facilitating the adoption of the recommendations into policy and practice. Methods & Procedures: Researchers, practitioners and parents from nine countries were recruited to the study (n = 27). Online focus groups and semi‐structured interviews were conducted using topic guides informed by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. Inductive thematic analysis was undertaken. Preliminary findings were member‐checked prior to completion of the analysis. Outcomes & Results: CATALISE recommendations were described as partially adopted by participants. Dissemination strategies included building a coalition, conducting educational meetings, and developing educational materials. Common barriers to implementation related to the complexity and compatibility of the recommendations, and practitioner confidence. Four themes were identified across the data set to guide future implementation efforts: (a) ride the wave, craft the narrative (b) reach across the divide, be brave (c) create space for multiple voices and, (d) support for speech and language therapistss on the front line. Conclusions & Implications: Individuals with DLD and their families should be included in future implementation planning. Engaged leadership is essential to address issues of complexity, compatibility, sustainability and practitioner confidence if CATALISE recommendations are to be integrated into service workflow and processes. Implementation science can provide a useful lens to progress future research in this area. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject: Dissemination efforts have been undertaken to facilitate the uptake of recommendations from a UK‐based consensus study (CATALISE) in relation to developmental language disorder since publication across several countries. What this study adds to existing knowledge: The required changes in diagnostic practice are complex to implement. A lack of compatibility with healthcare processes and low practitioner self‐efficacy were also identified as a challenge to implementation. Background: Healthcare professionals (HCPs) have a responsibility to conduct assessments of decision‐making capacity that comply with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). Current best‐practice guidance, such as the Mental Capacity Code of Practice and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence decision‐making and mental capacity guidance, does not stipulate how to accomplish this in practice, for example, what questions should be asked, how options and information should be provided. In addition, HCPs struggle to assess the capacity of individuals with communication difficulties. Aims: This study was a service evaluation that aimed to objectively analyse, using Conversation Analysis (CA), how real‐life capacity assessments were conducted in a hospital setting with patients with acquired brain injury (ABI)‐related communication difficulties. A second aim was to establish the feasibility of using CA to advance knowledge of the conduct of capacity assessment. Methods & Procedures: Four naturally occurring capacity assessments were video‐recorded. Recordings involved speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists and patients with communication difficulties as a result of ABI. The methods and findings of CA were used to investigate the interactional behaviours of HCPs and patients during assessments of decision‐making capacity. The analysis was informed by our knowledge of the MCA best practice guidance. Outcomes & Results: An overall structure of capacity assessment that enacted some of the best‐practice MCA guidance was identified in one recording, consisting of six phases: (i) opening, (ii) preparation, (iii) option‐listing, (iv) test, (v) decision, and (vi) close. The preparation phase consisted of two sub‐components: information gathering and information giving. Variation from this structure was observed across the dataset, notably in the way in which options were (or were not) presented. Conclusions & Implications: CA is a feasible empirical method for exploring the structure and conduct of capacity assessments. CA identifies and provides ways of describing interactional behaviours that align with and diverge from best‐practice MCA guidance. Future CA studies including a wider range of health and social care professionals and patients have the potential to inform evidence based training for HCPs who conduct assessments of decision‐making capacity. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject: The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) is poorly implemented in practice. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) find it challenging to assess the decision‐making capacity of individuals with communication difficulties, and people with communication difficulties are often excluded from or insufficiently supported during capacity assessment. Research is limited to self‐report methods. Observational studies of capacity assessment are required. What this study adds: This is the first study to use Conversation Analysis (CA) to explore how capacity assessments are conducted in a hospital setting by HCPs with people with communication difficulties as a result of acquired brain injury. One video‐recorded capacity assessment was structured in six phases that aligned with best practice MCA guidance. However, other capacity assessments deviated from this structure. One phase, option listing, varied in practice and options were not always presented. What are the clinical implications of this work?: CA revealed interactional behaviours that align with and diverge from best‐practice MCA guidance. Background: During the COVID‐19 pandemic, Ireland implemented a series of stringent public health measures, including lockdowns and suspension of non‐urgent clinical services. Aims: To investigate the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on the demand for and delivery of speech and language therapy (SLT) services in Ireland in 2020. Methods & Procedures: Two iterations of a cross‐sectional, mixed‐methods online survey were distributed to speech and language therapists (SLTs) and SLT students in Ireland in the spring and autumn of 2020 using a combination of purposive and snowball sampling. The spring survey yielded 407 responses (including 14 from SLT students), while 197 respondents took part in the autumn (13 students). Survey analysis focused on questions related to the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on delivery and demand for SLT services (student responses were excluded from analysis owing to low response rate). The largest group in respect of experience were senior SLTs (58% in both surveys). The work settings most strongly represented were HSE primary care (34.4%) and disability services (26.5%) in the spring, and HSE primary care (39.1%), acute hospitals (22.8%) and disability services (20.8%) in the autumn. We used descriptive statistics, including distribution analysis, to analyse the quantitative data. Free text data were interrogated through a variant of a conventional qualitative content analysis. Outcomes & Results: In the spring, cessation of face‐to‐face services featured prominently (reported by 65.6% versus 14.2% in the autumn), across SLTs' work settings, except acute hospitals. Lower demand was reported by 42.5% in the spring, while in the autumn, 48.7% indicated that demand was higher. SLTs experienced large‐scale redeployment (spring: 45.9%, autumn: 38.4%), with HSE primary care SLTs redeployed most (spring: 71.7%; autumn: 62.3%). The need to suddenly pivot to telehealth was a significant challenge in terms of training, technology and logistics. New ways of working emerged and gradually, telehealth became more embedded. SLTs also had to adapt to working with evolving public health measures, such as space restrictions and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. Across the two survey iterations, SLTs reported tensions between demands and capacity: while referrals and demand initially decreased in the spring, this led to increased backlog and longer waiting lists, ongoing and increasing pressure on clinicians and services, and negatively impacted clients and families. Conclusions & Implications: The COVID‐19 pandemic had a significant negative impact on SLT services in Ireland. Going forward, the SLT profession and its services will require sustained support to mitigate long‐term negative consequences, such as increased waiting lists. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject: The negative impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic on SLT services has been examined in several countries. Ireland imposed more stringent pandemic‐management measures than many other countries, and it was therefore warranted to investigate how SLT services in the country were affected. What this study adds to the existing knowledge: Face‐to‐face SLT services effectively ceased in most non‐urgent contexts in spring 2020. This coincided with large‐scale redeployment of SLTs to non‐SLT contexts. By autumn 2020, demand had increased again, but not all services had recommenced, and redeployment was still a factor. Although SLTs adapted to the ongoing changes imposed by the pandemic, they voiced concern about increasing backlogs and longer waiting lists, ongoing and increasing pressure on both SLTs and services, and negative impacts on clients and families. Background: Undertaking voice and communication training is an important part of the gender‐affirming journey for many trans, gender‐diverse and non‐binary individuals. Training supports the alignment of voice with gender identity helping to reduce gender dysphoria as individuals are better able to connect with their voices. However, for training to be effective, regular practice is needed and the demands of training can often be difficult to meet. Aims: To investigate the interest, attitudes and perspectives on the use of immersive virtual reality (VR) to support gender‐affirming voice and communication training by transgender, gender non‐binary and gender‐diverse people, and speech–language pathologists providing gender‐affirming voice and communication training. Methods & Procedures: A mixed‐methods survey (i.e., collecting quantitative data through multiple‐choice question and qualitative data through free text questions) was hosted online from 23 August to 21 September 2021. A total of 17 questions asked about technology use, and attitudes and perspectives towards VR. The survey included video examples of three different voice‐activated VR applications to prompt participant responses about the technology. Outcomes & Results: A total of 70 survey responses were included in the analysis. All participants had previous experience using smart phones, but only 27.2% had previously used VR. Four key themes were identified relating to potential uptake of VR in gender‐affirming voice and communication training: (1) general audience appeal, (2) perceived therapeutic value, (3) exposure to or protection from harm and (4) relatability to real life. Conclusions & Implications: VR games may represent a viable option to support practice of voice exercises. Gamification through VR is likely to motivate some to increase frequency of practice. VR applications that are used in voice training need to be fit‐for‐purpose, and detailed co‐design is necessary to build appropriate applications for future use. This study provides a foundation to inform the design, development and implementation of VR applications to be used in gender‐affirming voice training. The results suggest that voice‐activated VR applications would highly motivate some individuals if they were appropriately designed but would not be ideal for all. Background: Evidence‐based practice involves the synthesis of multiple forms of evidence to inform clinical decision‐making and treatment evaluation. Practice‐ and patient‐based evidence are two forms of evidence that are under‐represented in the stuttering literature. The collection of such knowledge is essential to support the design and delivery of effective stuttering interventions for adults. Aims: To build stakeholder consensus on the core components of intervention for adults who stutter, and to establish a guiding framework for the design and development of evidence‐based interventions for adults who stutter. Methods & Procedures: Adults who stutter and speech and language therapists (SLTs) with experience in providing stuttering intervention participated in the three‐round e‐Delphi Survey focused on: (1) identifying key stuttering intervention components, including principles, practices, and structural and contextual elements; and (2) obtaining group consensus on stuttering intervention components. Statements were categorized using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model adapted to the study of stuttering. Outcomes & Results: A total of 48 individuals agreed to participate: 48/48 (100%) completed the Round 1 questionnaire, 40/48 (83%) responded to Round 2 and 36/40 (90%) participated in Round 3. Following content analysis of Round 1, 101 statements were developed, and consensus was achieved on 89 statements perceived as representing the core components of stuttering intervention for adults. Categorization of these statements reflected the key stuttering intervention components relating to personal reactions to stuttering, limitations in life participation and environmental factors. Conclusions & Implications: Consensus on the core components of stuttering intervention was reached through engagement with key stakeholders. The evidence‐based framework presented highlights the range of key intervention components a clinician should consider when designing interventions for adults who stutter. Background: Despite emerging evidence of validity and reliability, speech and language therapists' (SLT) uptake of telehealth has been limited and barriers remain to the effective and confident use of this service model. The COVID‐19 pandemic has caused significant disruption to essential health services, including speech and language therapy assessment and intervention, meaning that telehealth must now be considered as part of the suite of service delivery options for all clinicians. Aims: To explore the perceived barriers and facilitators of telehealth among community paediatric SLTs before and after their use of a telehealth platform with an embedded standardised assessment tool. Methods & Procedures: Mixed‐methods questionnaires were developed for this study and completed by SLTs before and after the 3‐month trial of the telehealth platform. A total of 38 SLTs completed the pre‐trial questionnaire and training in the use of telehealth platform (Coviu), including instruction in using a standardised, norm referenced language test as an integrated tool within the Coviu platform. A total of 27 SLTs went on to use the telehealth platform, and 25 of these completed the post‐trial questionnaire on which subsequent qualitative and quantitative analysis was completed. Outcomes & Results: Prior to using the platform, perceived barriers included technology issues, limited clinician experience and concerns around parent acceptance of the service. Potential facilitators included access to appropriate platforms, tools and resources as well as increased clinician confidence with telehealth. Following the trial, barriers to telehealth use continued to include technology barriers, particularly internet stability, and client issues, including suitability for telehealth services. Facilitators for future telehealth use included access to appropriate platforms for telehealth, stable and appropriate internet connectivity, and more extensive telehealth resources for both assessment and intervention for this mode of service delivery. Conclusions & Implications: This study provides insights into the perceptions of the barriers and facilitating factors for telehealth use among community‐based SLTs. This information will be useful in developing strategies to promote uptake and effective and confident use of telehealth as a mode of service delivery beyond the pandemic. Background: Prioritized research agendas are viewed internationally as an important method for ensuring that health research meets actual areas of clinical need. There is growing evidence for speech–language therapy‐prioritized research agendas, particularly in disorder‐specific areas. However, there are few general research priority agendas to guide speech–language therapy research. Aims: To collaboratively develop a prioritized research agenda for an Australian public health context with clinical speech–language therapists (SLTs), academic SLTs and consumers of speech–language therapy services. Methods & Procedures: An initial stimulus list of potential research areas for prioritization was collected from SLTs via an online survey. Two categories (service delivery and expanded scope of practice) were selected from this list for prioritization due to their relevance across multiple health services. The Nominal Group Technique (NGT) was used to develop a prioritized research agenda for each of the two categories. One NGT session was conducted with each of the three participant groups (clinical SLTs, academic SLTs, consumers) for each category (total NGT sessions = six). The prioritization data for each group within each category were summed to give a single, ranked prioritized research agenda for each category. Outcomes & Results: Two prioritized research agendas were developed. Within each agenda, SLTs and consumers prioritized a need for more research in areas related to specific practice areas (e.g., Alternative and Augmentative Communication, Communication Partner Training), as well as broader professional issues (e.g., telehealth, working with culturally and linguistically diverse families). Conclusions & Implications: The current findings support the need for funding proposals and targeted projects that address these identified areas of need. Background: Speech disorders in children with a cleft palate with or without a cleft lip (CP±L) are complex given the magnitude of influencing factors. Providing intervention to eliminate these speech errors is often challenging. Speech–language pathologists (SLPs) might have negative perceptions of the treatment of children with a CP±L. Aims: To explore how community SLPs perceive and experience the provision of speech intervention to children with a CP±L. Methods & Procedures: A total of 18 female community SLPs, aged between 23 and 62 years, were included in this study. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted. The interviews were analysed using an inductive thematic approach aiming to identify themes driven by the data. Trustworthiness of the data was achieved by including researcher triangulation (involving three researchers with different research backgrounds) and deviant case analysis of two cases. Outcomes & Results: Initial responses demonstrated that the community SLPs were excited and enthusiastic to treat children with a CP±L. Expanding on these initial reports, however, they revealed that their excitement turned into professional self‐doubt and insecurity when confronted with the treatment challenges inherent with this population. To cope with this self‐doubt, they outlined several responsibilities for the cleft team SLPs. They expressed a strong desire to receive confirmation and approval on their treatment practices from more experienced SLPs (i.e., the cleft team SLPs). Their perceptions were dominated by a polarized thinking pattern. Treatment approaches were divided in categories as 'right' or 'wrong' and 'good' or 'bad'. Conclusions & Implications: The community SLPs are lacking professional confidence when treating children with a CP±L. They put themselves in a subordinate position towards the cleft team SLPs and expect the latter to provide ready‐made answers to problems and questions. This expectation can perhaps be explained by their fear of making mistakes during therapy preventing treatment progress. If they handle in accordance with the experts' advice, they cannot blame themselves in cases where no treatment progress is seen. Educational programmes need to pay more attention to gaining professional confidence (in the search for the most optimal treatment approach for each individual patient) rather than merely focusing on competency‐based learning tools. Background: The Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) is a patient‐reported outcome measure (PROM) designed to measure the extent of interference, or difficulty, experienced by adults with communication disorders participating in their day‐to‐day communication activities. To date, there is limited evidence regarding sensitivity of the CPIB for capturing change with intervention in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). Aims: The purpose of this study was to examine the following measurement properties of the CPIB in PwPD who received community‐based, standard care, speech‐language therapy focusing on motor speech concerns: Change over time between treatment and observation groups, comparison to patient‐defined ideal and satisfactory targets, comparison of static short form to computerised adaptive testing (CAT), comparison of self to proxy‐rated scores, and comparison to other common PROMs. Methods and Procedures: Forty‐six PwPD (20 treatment/26 observation) completed data collection upon enrolment (pre‐treatment) and 6 months later. In addition to the CPIB, PROMs included the Voice Handicap Index 10‐item short form (VHI‐10), PROMIS Global Health‐Related Quality of Life, Levels of Speech Usage, self‐rated speech severity, and Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9). Participants also engaged in qualitative interviews. Forty‐four family members completed proxy CPIB ratings. Outcomes and Results: There were no significant differences between treatment and observation groups on the CPIB pre‐treatment, but there were significant differences post‐treatment. The differences appeared to be largely due to significant gains in the treatment group. No participants reached their ideal CPIB target, and few reached their satisfactory target. Static CPIB short form and CAT scores were not significantly different, with an average of five CAT items administered per participant. Overall group similarities between patient and proxy scores may have obscured wide variability across individual patient‐proxy pairs. Associations between CPIB and VHI‐10, health‐related quality of life, self‐reported speech severity, and depression ranged from weak to moderate. Conclusions and Implications: The CPIB appears to be sensitive to capturing change with intervention, and similar results are obtained with the static short form and CAT formats. One clinical caution is that even with gains observed in the treatment group, no participants obtained their ideal communicative participation goals, and few obtained a satisfactory level of communicative participation. Thus, while current interventions are beneficial, they may not meet the full range of clients' communication needs. While responding to the CPIB through a proxy rater may be feasible, caution is warranted due to concerns about maintaining the autonomy of PwPD. The Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) is one PROM available to use with adults with communication disorders. However, little is known about whether the CPIB captures changes in communicative participation as a result of standard care treatment for people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). Use of computerised adaptive testing (CAT), proxy report and comparison to targeted participation outcomes have not been explored. What this study adds to existing knowledge: As a result of this study, we know that the CPIB captured differences between treatment and observation groups after community‐based, standard care speech therapy intervention focusing on motor speech production in PwPD. Static short form and CAT scores did not differ significantly, so the CAT option provides better efficiency requiring, on average, five items to administer compared to the 10‐item short form. Proxy and PwPD scores did not differ as a group, but wide variability was noted. Background: While evidence‐based practice is widely endorsed by researchers, clinicians and professional bodies as a guiding framework for the provision of quality care to clients, the reliance on efficacy evidence may overshadow the benefits of other knowledge forms in supporting intervention design and evaluation. Due consideration needs to be given to varied forms of evidence, including practice and patient evidence. Stuttering intervention for adults is one area in which there is a significant shortage of practice‐based research literature. Aims: This study aimed to add to practice evidence by exploring the perspectives of international researchers and clinical experts on the components of effective stuttering intervention. This practice‐based evidence will be used to inform the multi‐stakeholder co‐design of an evidence‐based stuttering intervention for adults. Methods & Procedures: Criteria defining expertise were developed based on a review of the literature. Experts were recruited using purposive sampling and snowballing. Seventeen international experts were approached, of which 10 completed semi‐structured interviews. Interview questions were developed and centred on five topics: the nature of stuttering; efficacy evidence base; intervention techniques, principles of effective intervention; and outcome measurement. Outcomes & Results: Inductive thematic analysis identified three overarching themes: 'One size doesn't fit all', 'A really collaborative relationship where we are both bringing our sense of expertise to this' and 'Some of the most frustrating things'. Conclusions & Implications: These findings emphasize the complexity of stuttering intervention, the need for individually tailored treatments and the role of multiple factors, beyond therapeutic technique, that influence treatment outcomes. Findings also demonstrate the benefit of collecting practice‐based evidence to support clinical decision‐making and intervention evaluation. Background: People with aphasia rely on gesture more than healthy controls to get their message across, but use a limited range of gesture types. Gesture therapy is thus a potential avenue of intervention for people with aphasia. However, currently no gesture assessment evaluates how they use gesture. Such a tool could inform therapy targets and measure outcomes. In gesture research, many different coding categories are used to describe gesture forms and functions. These coding methods are prohibitively time‐consuming to use in clinical practice. There is therefore a need for a 'quick and dirty' method of assessing gesture use. Aims: To investigate current practice among UK‐based clinicians (speech and language therapists) in relation to gesture assessment and therapy, to synthesize gesture‐coding frameworks used in aphasia research, to develop a gesture checklist based on the synthesized coding frameworks suitable for use in clinical practice, and to investigate the interrater reliability (IRR) of the checklist among experienced and unfamiliar users. Methods & Procedures: The research team synthesized seven gesture‐coding frameworks and trialled three resulting prototype checklists at a co‐design workshop with 20 clinicians. Attending clinicians were also consulted about their current clinical gesture practice using a questionnaire. A final City Gesture Checklist (CGC) was developed based upon outcomes and feedback from the workshop. The IRR of the CGC was evaluated between the research team and 11 further clinicians within a second workshop. Both groups used the CGC to count gestures in video clips of people with aphasia talking to a conversation partner. Main Contribution: A total of 18 workshop attendees completed the current practice questionnaire. Of these, 10 reported assessing gesture informally and five also used formal assessment. Gesture‐coding synthesis highlighted six main categories of gesture form. Clinicians at the co‐design workshop provided feedback on prototype checklists regarding the relevance and usability of the gesture categories, layout, use of images and instructions. A final version of the CGC was created incorporating their recommendations. The IRR for the CGC was moderate between both the researchers and clinicians. Conclusions & Implications: The CGC can be used to assess the types of gesture that people with aphasia produce. The IRR was moderate amongst both experienced users and new users who had received no training. Future research directions include investigating how to improve IRR, evaluating intra‐rater reliability and sensitivity to change, and exploring use of the CGC in clinical practice. Background: Autistic people require varying levels of support at different stages of their lives. Yet, the healthcare needs of autistic adults are largely unmet. Speech and language therapy (SLT) is one healthcare service that has an important role in supporting autistic people: both with initial diagnosis, and with the ongoing support needed to navigate different communicative challenges across the lifespan. Despite recommendations for such support, currently there is no clear SLT pathway for autistic adults, and a lack of established approaches to support autistic adults' speech, language and communication needs. Aims: To seek autistic adults' views on (1) their communication skills and support needs; (2) the type of support SLT could offer; and (3) how such support could be provided. Methods & Procedures: A total of 18 autistic adults were interviewed in their preferred mode of communication (e.g., face to face, phone call, text messaging, e‐mail), expressing their views on their communication skills and needs. Interview data were analysed using thematic analysis. Outcomes & Results: Autistic adults presented complex views on communication, identifying the benefits of communication, while also emphasizing the significant negative impact that communication difficulties can have on their everyday lives. Identifying a range of internal (e.g., personal feelings) and external (e.g., the communication partner) factors, they highlighted the need for support at both individual levels (for specific life situations) and broader societal levels (to increase awareness and acceptance of communication difficulties). Conclusions & Implications: Considering the negative impact that communication difficulties can have for autistic adults, a need for support was emphasized. Despite recognition of this need within current legislation (in the UK) and positive steps toward providing support, more needs to be done. As experts in supporting individuals with communication difficulties, speech and language therapists could play a pivotal role in providing support at an individual level, as well as increasing awareness of communication differences more widely. Background: Subjective well‐being (SWB) and quality of life (QOL) are intricately related constructs. Recent research shows both constructs share some facets, but are distinct entities. It is unclear, both internationally and in the Netherlands, if and how SLTs address SWB in clinical practice. The current study was set up to explore Dutch SLTs' perceptions of SWB in relation to the management of people with aphasia. Aims: To describe how Dutch SLTs, working with people with aphasia in a private practice or a healthcare setting, address patient's SWB during diagnosis and treatment, and to identify barriers and facilitators they experience when addressing SWB. Methods & Procedures: A qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach was used. SLTs from private practices and healthcare settings were invited to participate in individual interviews and a focus group. The data were analysed thematically using a combination of inductive and deductive methods. Outcomes & Results: Eight SLTs participated in the study. The SLTs' experiences were captured in four themes that emerged from the data: (1) SWB is a multifaceted concept and depends on patient‐specific factors: premorbid factors, life priorities and time post‐stroke; (2) SLTs experience more responsibility for patients' SWB than their profession allows; (3) collaboration between SLTs and patients, patients' network and other healthcare professionals is required to address SWB during diagnosis and treatment; and (4) misinterpretations are inevitable when SLTs or the patients' network address patients' SWB. Conclusions & Implications: The results showed that SLTs feel responsible for addressing SWB in the management of people with aphasia. Their perception of the concept of SWB is similar to the definition used in the literature and is multifaceted. They feel responsible for the part of SWB that is related to communicative functioning, but less so for the more heuristic aspects of SWB. This is related to their experienced limitation of influence on SWB, which for some leaves them feeling out of depth and uncertain about boundaries between professionals. Addressing SWB in a multidisciplinary team is therefore considered important in order to adequately and fully capture someone's SWB and reduce to clinicians' experienced burden and responsibility. Background: To date, the immediate effects of a semi‐occluded vocal tract (SOVT) configuration have been thoroughly demonstrated. However, it is not yet sufficiently confirmed whether a therapy programme (i.e. longer than one session) using SOVT exercises leads to an enhanced phonation and improved vocal quality. Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of three SOVT therapy programmes: lip trill, water‐resistance therapy (WRT) and straw phonation, on the vocal quality, vocal capacities, psychosocial impact and vocal tract discomfort of patients with dysphonia. Methods & Procedures: A blocked‐randomized sham‐controlled trial was used. Thirty‐five patients with dysphonia (mean age = 21 years; 33 women, two men) were assigned to either a lip trill group, a WRT group, a straw phonation group or a control group using blocked randomization. The lip trill, WRT and straw phonation groups practised their respective SOVT exercise across 3 weeks, whereas the control group received a sham treatment across the same time span. A multidimensional voice assessment consisting of both objective (multiparametric indices: Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI), Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI)) and subjective (subject's self‐report, auditory–perceptual evaluation) vocal outcomes was performed by a blinded assessor pre‐ and post‐therapy. Outcomes & Results: Lip trill and straw phonation therapy led to a significant improvement in DSI. Auditory–perceptual grade and roughness significantly decreased after straw phonation. Lip trill and WRT both led to a significant decrease in Voice Handicap Index. Subjects reported a better self‐perceived vocal quality and a more comfortable voice production after WRT. No changes were found after the sham treatment in the control group. Conclusions & Implications: Results suggest that SOVT therapy programmes including lip trill or straw phonation can improve the objective vocal quality in patients with dysphonia. Auditory–perceptual improvements were found after straw phonation therapy, whereas psychosocial improvements were found after lip trill and WRT. Patients seem to experience more comfort and a better self‐perceived vocal quality after WRT. This study supports the use of the three SOVT therapy programmes in clinical practice. They all had a positive impact on one or more outcomes of the multidimensional voice assessment. Strikingly, vocal quality outcomes were not in line with the subject's opinion. Background: There is increasing recognition that dysphagia has significant implications for a person's psychological well‐being, social participation and quality of life (QOL). However, a paucity of research exists regarding the clinical management of this area. To inform future research and the development of appropriate and beneficial resources and guidelines, a better understanding of the current practice of speech and language therapists (SLTs) in this area would be useful. This information will highlight current challenges to clinical practice and the ongoing development needs of the profession, which are, as of yet, undocumented. Aims: To determine the practices of SLTs when addressing QOL issues in individuals with dysphagia, the beliefs of SLTs regarding the impact of dysphagia on QOL, the current trends in assessing and managing QOL in dysphagia, and if variations in beliefs and practices in this area exist. Methods & Procedures: An anonymous cross‐sectional, non‐experimental survey study was used. The survey consisted of 18 questions exploring participants' beliefs and opinions regarding dysphagia and QOL, current clinical practice in the area, perceived facilitators and barriers, and education, training and development needs. The survey was created on Survey Monkey and disseminated by e‐mail link to SLT professional bodies. Purposive and snowball sampling were used and participants self‐selected based on the information provided alongside the e‐mail link. Inclusion criteria for the study were a qualification in speech and language therapy, proficiency in the English language, and access to a computer with the internet. Outcomes & Results: A total of 148 SLTs working across the UK, Ireland and South Africa completed the survey. Over 90% of respondents believe that dysphagia has a negative impact on QOL, but only 25% are currently satisfied with the amount of clinical time they can dedicate to this area. Staffing, resources, a lack of best‐practice guidelines and disease‐specific QOL assessment tools were cited as contributing factors. A number of facilitators and barriers to best practice were also highlighted. Based on these findings, professional development actions for the future are suggested. Conclusions & Implications: SLTs believe they have an important role to play in supporting QOL issues in dysphagia. However, it is reported that the area is currently under‐developed, under‐resourced and under‐supported. Increased awareness raising of the role of SLT, alongside the development of best‐practice guidelines and disease‐specific QOL assessment tools, will enhance the quality of care that can be offered in this area. Abstract: Background: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) may exhibit some degree of change in swallowing dynamics during the course of the disease. These changes can affect their physical, functional and emotional quality of life. Aims: To develop a quality of life and swallowing questionnaire for individuals with PD. Methods & Procedures: The first version of the questionnaire comprised 29 items taken from the accounts of 50 patients treated over a 2‐month period at Sarah Hospital in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. A committee of 10 experts in the field analyzed the content and reduced the questionnaire to 28 questions. The questionnaire was then administered to 140 PD patients and 47 healthy individuals. A factor analysis of the items guided the drafting of the final questionnaire, which consisted of 19 items grouped into four factors, encompassing physical, functional and emotional aspects. A test–retest assessment was conducted with 44 individuals with PD. Outcomes & Results: The internal consistency, estimated by the mean of Cronbach's alpha coefficient, varied between 0.71 (domain 3) and 0.94 (domain 1) in the test and between 0.69 (domain 3) and 0.95 (domain 1) in the retest. The correlation coefficient in the test/retest comparison was high and significant, demonstrating that the measurement was stable. A significant difference was observed between the PD group and the comparison group. Background In attempting to evaluate an intervention programme designed to improve English literacy outcomes in children in a remote indigenous community in Australia, the need for valid and culturally appropriate measures of the factors likely to impact on literacy development became apparent. One factor considered likely to be of importance was the precision of the children's phonological representations. Aims To develop a measure of phonological representations that was culturally relevant for Anindilyakwa children and to evaluate its reliability and concurrent validity against English measures that are known to be predictive of literacy outcomes. Methods & Procedures Starting from the Quality of Phonological Representations test (QPR), the authors developed an Anindilyakwa Quality of Phonological Representations test (AQPR) and examined its reliability and concurrent validity. Outcomes & Results The AQPR was found to have acceptable reliability and to correlate significantly with three well-established measures of phonological awareness and phonics in English. Conclusions The AQPR would thus seem an appropriate screening test for use by teachers to identify Anindilyakwa children in need of interventions to improve phonological representations before exposing them to an English literacy programme for which they may not yet be ready. Background Rehabilitation services are scarce in low-income countries, where under-representation of some specialist professions has led to the role extension of others. An example of this can be found in Kilifi in Kenya where the role of speech and language therapy has been taken on by occupational therapists and teachers. Aims To investigate the communication practices used by these professional groups to support children with complex communication needs in a rural part of Kenya and to explore the ways in which this might be seen to facilitate or obstruct improved communication by asking the following questions: What are the critical features of interactional discourse in practitioner-child dyads with caregiver-child dyads providing a natural comparison? What communicative modalities and practice techniques are invoked? And how does this information relate to extending professional roles? Methods & Procedures An in-depth, descriptive study of a case series was conducted in a school for deaf children and the occupational therapy department of a district general hospital. A mixed methodology was used involving naturalistic observation and applied linguistics analysis. A convenience sample was established comprising six practitioner-child dyads assigned to partnership types: (A) three children with hearing impairment and their teachers; and (B) three children with cerebral palsy and their occupational therapists. As a natural comparator, the same three children in B were also observed with their mothers (partnership type C). Dyadic interaction was video recorded on three occasions. The video data were sampled, transcribed into standard orthography and translated. Codes were applied to determine turn structure, linguistic move types and communicative modalities. Sequential analysis was conducted on the move types. Outcomes & Results Partnership type A dyads showed a fairly even turn distribution between teacher and child. A common pattern was teacher-initiated Instruct and Model/Prompt, followed by child response in the form of an Action. The most frequently used modality was Sound Production and Hands-on-Articulators, which corresponded to articulation drill practice. Partnership type B dyads revealed a tendency towards adult domination of turns. The majority of adult-initiated moves required no response from the child. The practice technique Hands-on-Articulators involved manipulating the oral musculature of the child. Partnership type C dyads showed resonances of type B dyads, although focused more on Motor-Action in relation to task performance. Conclusions & Implications The assignment of speech and language therapy duties to teachers and occupational therapists has resulted in suboptimal practice for children with complex communication needs. Background In Portugal, the routine clinical practice of speech and language therapists (SLTs) in treating children with all types of speech sound disorder (SSD) continues to be articulation therapy (AT). There is limited use of phonological therapy (PT) or phonological awareness training in Portugal. Additionally, at an international level there is a focus on collecting information on and differentiating between the effectiveness of PT and AT for children with different types of phonologically based SSD, as well as on the role of phonological awareness in remediating SSD. It is important to collect more evidence for the most effective and efficient type of intervention approach for different SSDs and for these data to be collected from diverse linguistic and cultural perspectives. Aims To evaluate the effectiveness of a PT and AT approach for treatment of 14 Portuguese children, aged 4.0-6.7 years, with a phonologically based SSD. Methods & Procedures The children were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment approaches (seven children in each group). All children were treated by the same SLT, blind to the aims of the study, over three blocks of a total of 25 weekly sessions of intervention. Outcome measures of phonological ability (percentage of consonants correct (PCC), percentage occurrence of different phonological processes and phonetic inventory) were taken before and after intervention. A qualitative assessment of intervention effectiveness from the perspective of the parents of participants was included. Outcomes & Results Both treatments were effective in improving the participants' speech, with the children receiving PT showing a more significant improvement in PCC score than those receiving the AT. Children in the PT group also showed greater generalization to untreated words than those receiving AT. Parents reported both intervention approaches to be as effective in improving their children's speech. Conclusions & Implications The PT (combination of expressive phonological tasks, phonological awareness, listening and discrimination activities) proved to be an effective integrated method of improving phonological SSD in children. Background: As UK healthcare moves towards the ideals of prevention and enablement, health promotion is more commonly cited as an area of practice. In comparison with its allied health profession peers, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, the speech and language therapy profession has little evidence to demonstrate that it has explored what its members understand health promotion to mean or how they describe their current and future practice in relation to it. Aims: To explore how speech and language therapists define health promotion and how they describe their current and future practice in relation to it. Methods & Procedures: Individual, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 community-based speech and language therapists. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using inductive coding. Outcomes & Results: Participants viewed health promotion as a complex entity representing the processes of education and enablement in relation to responsibility for speech, language and communication skills. Participants viewed health promotion as a means of maximizing the scarce resource they represented. The vast majority of activities described as being illustrative of health promotion in a speech and language therapy context were examples of educational interventions, e.g. training, information provision. Participants believed that the speech and language therapist's role will continue to develop in relation to health promotion and that this will have implications for future workforce preparation. Conclusions & Implications: Participants viewed health promotion as both an educational, enabling process and as a strategy that maximizes the potential of speech and language therapy resources. Further research is indicated to develop professional consensus regarding the meaning of health promotion and to support a cohesive approach to workforce development in this area. Background: The treatment of drooling in a paediatric population with neurological impairments is clinically challenging. Surgery is considered invasive, while behaviour modification techniques, correction of situational factors and oral-motor therapy do not always produce sustained improvement. In recent years the use of Botox® to decrease drooling has been investigated. Aims: To review the clinical data from a Drooling Treatment Project for children with neurological impairments and to establish the validity of the drooling severity and frequency rating scales, establishing Phase I-level information about the therapeutic use of submandibular salivary gland injections of Botox® in various contexts. Method & Procedures: A retrospective, explanatory design was used to review the data. Nine children, seven with cerebral palsy and two with operculum syndrome, ranging in age from 5 to 17 years (mean = 9;3 years) were included. Drooling was assessed by qualified speech-language therapists using drooling rating scales, in five different situations and at different time points pre- and post-Botox® injection up to 6 months. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were computed. Parents'/primary caregivers' perceptions of drooling and treatment with Botox® were also considered using an interview form and a quality of life questionnaire. Outcomes & Results: Statistically significant reductions in drooling with large effect sizes were obtained in the communicating and general appearance situations. There was a difference in the pattern of response between the children with cerebral palsy and those with operculum syndrome. Discrepancies between the parents and the speech-language therapists regarding the context of drooling reduction were found. Most parents/primary caregivers felt their children's lives and their own had improved following the Botox® injection and would repeat the treatment. The drooling rating scales were a valid method to assess drooling in a clinical situation. Conclusions & Implications: In the clinical setting of the Drooling Treatment Project, the results indicated that the context in which drooling occurs is an important factor and suggested the value of considering the situational context when making drooling judgments. Further, there was a difference in the pattern of response between the children with cerebral palsy and those with operculum syndrome, suggesting that aetiology may be involved in the response to Botox®.
