Research suggests young women view drinking as a pleasurable aspect of their social lives but that they face challenges in engaging in a traditionally 'masculine' behaviour whilst maintaining a desirable 'femininity'. Social network sites such as Facebook make socialising visible to a wide audience. This paper explores how young people discuss young women's drinking practices, and how young women construct their identities through alcohol consumption and its display on social media. We conducted 21 friendship-based focus groups (both mixed and single sex) with young adults aged 18-29 years and 13 individual interviews with a subset of focus group respondents centred on their Facebook practices. We recruited a purposive sample in Glasgow, Scotland (UK) which included 'middle class' (defined as students and those in professional jobs) and 'working class' respondents (employed in manual/service sector jobs), who participated in a range of venues in the night time economy. Young women's discussions revealed a difficult 'balancing act' between demonstrating an 'up for it' sexy (but not too sexy) femininity through their drinking and appearance, while still retaining control and respectability. This 'balancing act' was particularly precarious for working class women, who appeared to be judged more harshly than middle class women both online and offline. While a gendered double standard around appearance and alcohol consumption is not new, a wider online audience can now observe and comment on how women look and behave. There is considerable interest in determining the impact that increased uptake of treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection will have on the burden of HCV among people who inject drugs (PWID). An understanding of the size of the population of PWID, rates of injecting cessation and HCV prevalence and incidence within the PWID population is essential for such exercises. However, these parameters are often uncertain. In this paper we review methods for estimating the size of the population of PWID and related parameters, taking into account the uncertainty that exists around data on the natural history of injecting drug use; consider issues in the estimation of HCV prevalence among PWID; and consider the importance of opioid substitution therapy and prisons as settings for the prevention and treatment of HCV infection among PWID. These latter two points are illustrated through examples of ongoing work in England, Scotland and Australia. We conclude that an improved understanding of the size of PWID populations, including current and former PWID and parameters related to injecting drug use and settings where PWID may be reached, is necessary to inform HCV prevention and treatment strategies. Background: In the UK, legislation was implemented in 2014 allowing needle and syringe provision (NSP) services to offer foil to people who inject drugs (PWID) to encourage smoking rather than injecting. This paper aims to examine the association between foil uptake and smoking or snorting heroin among PWID. This is the first large scale national study to examine foil uptake and smoking or snorting heroin among PWID post legislative change.Method: Data from 1453 PWID interviewed via Scotland's Needle Exchange Surveillance Initiative in 2017-2018 were analysed using multivariate logistic regression.Results: Overall, 36% of PWID had obtained foil from NSP services in the past six months. The odds of smoking or snorting heroin were higher among those who had obtained foil (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) 3.79 (95% CI 2.98-4.82) p<0.001) compared to those who had not. Smoking or snorting heroin was associated with lower odds of injecting four or more times daily (AOR 0.60 (95% CI 0.40-0.90) p = 0.012) and injecting into the groin or neck (AOR 0.57 (95% CI 0.46-0.71) p<0.001) but increased odds of having had a skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) (AOR 1.49 (95% CI 1.17-1.89) p = 0.001) and having experienced an overdose (AOR 1.58 (95% CI 1.18-2.10) p = 0.002) both in the past year.Conclusion: The promotion of smoking drugs via foil provision from NSP services may contribute to the package of harm reduction measures for PWID alongside the provision of injecting equipment. We found that those in receipt of foil were more likely to smoke or snort heroin, and that smoking or snorting heroin was associated with a lower likelihood of some risky injecting behaviours, namely frequent injecting and injecting into the groin or neck. But it remains uncertain if the provision of foil can lead to a reduction in health harms, such as SSTI and overdose. Future research is needed to understand PWID motivations for smoking drugs, obtaining foil from NSP services, and its uses particularly among polydrug users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite an extensive drug-driving literature, knowledge of drug driving by drug users in treatment has not been well researched. This paper has two aims. Firstly, it investigates the prevalence of drug driving amongst new treatment clients in Scotland. Secondly, it examines the correlates of drug-driving behaviour amongst this population in order to clarify whether, and if so how, problem drug users entering treatment who drug drive differ from their non-drug-driving counterparts. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire administered to 585 new drug treatment clients (394 males and 191 females). Analyses involved univariate and multivariate logistic regressions. Ninety-five respondents (16.3%) had drug driven in the last 90 days and 52 (8.9%) had ever been arrested for drug driving. Being male; seeking help from a residential agency; not being a recent injector; having a formal qualification; and having recently committed assault or criminal damage were independently predictive of recent drug driving. Being male and a recent cocaine/crack user were independently predictive of having been arrested for drug driving. Findings provide important information on drug driving amongst problem drug users entering treatment, indicate strategies for targeting those most at risk, and highlight a need for further research into this little understood area. Background: Young people's experimentation with e-cigarettes has increased in recent years, although regular use remains limited. EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) regulations introduced packet warnings, advertising restrictions, and regulated nicotine strength from 2016, in part due to concerns regarding use by young people. This paper examines e-cigarette use trajectories before and after TPD.Methods: E-cigarette use data were obtained from School Health Research Network/Health Behaviour in School-aged Children surveys in Wales and Smoking Drinking and Drug Use surveys in England. Data from Wales were analysed using segmented logistic regression, with before and after regression analyses of English data. Semi-structured group interviews included young people aged 14-16 years in Wales, England and Scotland in 2017 and 2018.Results: In Wales, ever use of e-cigarettes increased over time, but under a range of assumptions, growth did not appear to continue post-TPD. A small and non-significant change in trend was observed post-implementation (OR=0.96; 95%CI=0.91 to 1.01), which increased in size and significance after adjusting for ever smoking (OR=0.93; 95%CI=0.88 to 0.98). There was little increase in regular e-cigarette use from 2015 to 2017 in Wales. However, ever and regular use increased from 2014 to 2016 in England. Young people in all nations described limited interactions with components of TPD, while describing e-cigarette use as a 'fad', which had begun to run its course.Conclusions: This study provides preliminary evidence that young people's e-cigarette experimentation may be plateauing in UK nations. The extent to which this arises from regulatory changes, or due to a fad having begun to lose its appeal among young people in the UK countries, remains unclear. These trends contrast to those observed in North America, where newer products whose EU market entry and marketing have been impacted by TPD, have gained traction among young people.
