Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is already challenging a variety of societal areas, including education. It is transforming education to data driven. AI-enhanced technologies in education (abbreviated AIinED) will have a significant role in changing the teaching and learning methods, as well as impacting the behavior and organization of the educational system. It is considered that the AIinED will change the paradigm of education in the future. And yet, AIinED is still more in the lab than being practically implemented in education and training. We consider three major players in the implementation of AIinED -- students, teachers, and society. All three can benefit from AIinED and at the same time be a potential target of the risks that AIinED brings along with its promises -- may be one of the reasons why main stakeholders (UNESCO, EC etc.) have been developing guidelines and recommendations for ethical use of AIinED. The literature shows that the center of AIinED system will be the student, but we consider the student not only as a target but also as a source of ideas for AIinED development with the potential to accelerate the process of adoption of AIinED. Hence, one of the big questions should be how the students foresee the role of artificial intelligence in education. To initiate such a question, though, it is important to know the level of understanding among the students about what and where artificial intelligence is. There are three major aspects that AIinED must be considered accordingly -- technological, lawful, and ethical. This paper presents the results of a study on high school students' understanding of AI technologies and their attitudes to their application in education. A survey was used as a tool to elaborate. The conceptual model of the research was developed on the basis of established theories linking attitudes to behavior and the acceptance of artificial intelligence technologies in education. Each element of this concept is explored with a different part of the questionnaire, which contains a total of 12 questions (some of which with sub-questions). The survey was elaborated online within October-November 2021. A link to the questionnaire in Bulgarian was provided to 178 high and vocational high schools educating students aged 14-19 (grades 8-12) across the country (Bulgaria). 766 students submitted their replies through the online survey form. Descriptive statistics and analysis of the frequencies of the respondents' opinions were made based on the data. The results show that the students participating in the survey:(a) understand the essence of AI technologies; (b) they are convinced of the usefulness of the application of artificial intelligence technologies in their daily activities and strongly believe that it improves it; (c) are not entirely clear about the benefits of artificial intelligence enhanced technologies in learning and teaching; (d) do not demonstrate sufficient knowledge and understanding of the necessity of ethical use of AI technologies in education; The latter reduces the positive influence of the perceived usefulness of artificial intelligence technologies in the learning process on students' attitudes. Applying computing technology during problem solving and the reflection of the appropriateness of this application are crucial skills for modern life. This is especially true while working on interdisciplinary STEM problems. However, up to now, few ready-to-use materials are available to foster such competencies. This paper starts bridging this gap by presenting a workbook for students in higher secondary education (around age 15). The workbook focuses on a complex STEM problem, primarily rooted in mathematics, computing, and technology education: Estimating the time it takes to evacuate a building. In the workbook, students work through five exercises focused on the problem of trying to make a sports hall safer. For three potential changes to the building, they should evaluate whether it increases the safety of the sports hall and whether the measure can reasonably be evaluated with a given simulation. During their work, students become aware of arguments useful for such an critical evaluation. For example, a change can only be evaluated if its magnitude is greater than variation in the (randomized) fleeing algorithm of the software. After development of the workbook, we used a design-based research approach to improve its quality. To do so, we asked eight educators for feedback and piloted it with 20 students from two mathematics classes of different capabilities. The results show that students had fun while working on the exercises and both the students and their tutors evaluated the workbook to be educationally relevant. Several issues, most importantly regarding the wording of several exercises, were identified and improved. Multiple exercises were further sub-divided to better suit learners of the age targeted. These proceedings contain the papers of the 11th International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2014), October 25-27, 2014, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS) and endorsed by the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSISE). The CELDA 2014 conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aimed to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. This paper describes how an Immersive Virtual Reality (VR) Classroom in a secondary school in Singapore is used to enhance learning through visualization and deepen understanding of science and increase interest and enjoyment in science. The VR Classroom is a futuristic classroom that taps the affordances of VR and AR to enhance HCI (Human-Computer Interactions) through visualization and interactivity, as well as increase engagement and enjoyment in the school curriculum. About the size of a regular classroom, this VR Classroom has three units of Oculus Rifts coupled adorned with life-size wall Augmented Reality posters of the Coronavirus and cells. Drawing from the author's experience in implementing VR lessons as a part of everyday classroom practice, this paper aims to provide practical ideas for educators to leverage on the affordances of virtual reality technologies to plan and design VR lessons. The author will also share sample lesson ideas on how educators can use VR 360 degrees videos to reach out to their students during this COVID-19 pandemic to complement the inquiry learning experience. The immersive and interactive nature of VR makes it an ideal tool for differentiated instruction to cater to diverse learners and learning needs especially during this pandemic. Data from findings using grounded theory and quantitative studies on affective outcomes show that there is significant increase in students' enjoyment in learning science when immersive VR is used and that the use of immersive VR increases students' self-efficacy. This study aims to explore an educational learning environment that supports students to learn conceptual modelling with the unified modelling language (UML). In this study, we call the describing models "UML programming." In this paper, we show an educational UML programming environment for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) related subjects (especially for Technology or Engineering) in schools, which are able to apply from elementary school to university. At first, we explain why, what, and how doing the UML programming. In this study, we use a state machine diagram for UML programming. To draw this model, the students just put some states in rectangular shape and transitions in arrow shape. Two types of educational model notations in state machine diagram are introduced. Then, some advanced functions of the SRPS are described. They are an educational model editor, and management of users, learning tasks and models submitted by students. Next, two case studies with the SRPS are shown. One case study is adopted to the summer camp for 5th- and 6th-grade students. The participants were 20 students and were engaged in 4 hours workshop. We used a car-type robot with two DC motors, a one-touch sensor, and one infrared sensor connected to a micro:bit. The other case study is a formal technology class at one Japanese public junior high school. One teacher and five classes worked on UML programming for traffic lights. Each class had 20 9th-grade students. One student at this school was given a traffic light robot with three Light-emitting diode (LED) lights, a one-touch sensor, and one infrared sensor connected to a micro:bit. Finally, on the basis of these two case studies using our environment, we discuss the potential for innovative STEAM education with UML programming.

Educational chatbots promise many benefits for teaching and learning. Although chatbot use cases in this research field are rapidly growing, most studies focus on individual users rather than on collaborative group settings. To address this issue, this paper investigates how chatbot-mediated learning can be designed to foster middle school students in team-based assignments. Using an educational design research approach, quality indicators of educational chatbots were derived from the literature, which served as a guideline for the development of the chatbot Tubo (meaning tutoring bot). Tubo is part of a web-based team learning environment in which students can chat with each other and collaboratively work on their group assignments. As a team member and tutor of each group, Tubo guides the students through the learning journey by different scaffolding elements and helps with content-related questions the students have. As part of a first design cycle, the chatbot application was tested with a school class of a technical vocational school in Switzerland. The received feedback suggests that the approach of team-based learning with chatbots has a lot of potential from the students' and teachers' point of view. However, the role distribution of the individual group members may have to be further specified to address the different needs of autonomous as well as more control-oriented students.

The challenges in learning and teaching computer programming relate to everyone who needs to prepare others for the digital world. Learning and teaching computer programming is a challenge because it requires persistence and dedication. Nowadays, Computational Thinking is understood as an essential skill to overcome those challenges. In this paper, we propose an Augmented Reality (AR) environment that creates representations of complex programming constructs displaying engaging and playful activities that can be promptly done and do not require a heavy mental load. Such exercises are intended to be used as Learning Resources to train people in CT. The artifact enables people to explore CT concepts and several problem-solving approaches subtly. The artifact includes a simple AR-based activity, which is easy to handle and visualize based on "see-through video." We argue that users can develop CT problem-solving skills by interacting with this artifact. These learning activities supported by AR provide visual representations and interactivity to engage students while training CT. We also describe an experiment to test this artifact. The potential of using virtual reality in the school context is assessed heterogeneously from a scientific point of view. Especially the embedding in existing didactic approaches, the concrete design of the support system as well as the competence of the teachers are relevant. But it is undisputed that virtual reality opens up new possibilities to visit different out-of-school learning locations. However, it is not yet clear whether these opportunities have a significant impact on learning success. In this paper, three research questions about the learning effect and the essential criteria for the use of virtual reality are investigated in a qualitative field experiment with a virtual reality learning unit about our solar system. The field experiment follows a classical A/B testing approach with pre- and post-tests. The results show that virtual reality can contribute to students' knowledge transfer. However, this contribution does not show a higher learning success compared to a classical didactic approach. Another result shows that combining virtual reality learning applications with a traditional teaching approach can be very successful. Critical Thinking & Problem Solving belong to 21st century skills that enhance ways of thinking, learning, working and living in the world. When combined with well-designed educational activities, mobile technology has the capacity to foster these abilities. This study evaluates the Critical Thinking & Problem Solving skills of ninth-grade students who participated in mobile-supported labs. According to the findings of a questionnaire provided to students, their skills have improved. Students' written responses to open-ended questions before and after the mobile-supported Labs revealed interesting data about their improvement. Also, records of students' written discussions on the Viber-platform, throughout the process, revealed aspects of critical thinking & Problem Solving development. In this era of globalization, mobile learning is increasingly becoming a new paradigm to promote teachers' core literacy. In this study, teachers in rural secondary schools in South China were selected as respondents, and the correlation between mobile learning and teachers' subject core literacy was proved by using SPSS22.0 software. The study concluded that mobile learning for Chinese rural secondary school teachers is deficient at the level of social interactivity, the learners (teachers) themselves and mobile learning devices. Therefore, enhancing the social interaction level of mobile learning, stimulating the demand for m-learning among rural secondary school teachers and Increasing Equipment Support are crucial to improving teachers' subject core literacy in rural secondary schools. This study aimed to build a model to detect the factors to enhance student engagement and learning development in mobile learning during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Data from a total of 400 junior-high-school students were collected in China in the fall semester of 2020, and a large proportion of students preferred accessing their study with cellphones (67.0%) than with computers (11.8%), laptops (11.3%) or pads (10.0%). Exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used for data analysis. The fitness of the items for each scale of the student engagement and learning development indicated a sufficient fit (X[superscript 2][subscript (19)] = 41.252, GIF = 0.974, AGFI = 0.951, CFI = 0.986, RMSEA = 0.054, NNFI = 0.979, IFI = 0.986). The results of SEM analysis show that emotional engagement is the most important factor (r[superscript 2] = 0.859) in the model, and student engagement has a significant positive impact on learning development in mobile learning. The Edu-social Algorithm research project aims to construct a micro-pedagogical, experimental, digital research action to create a methodological model using the functions and algorithms found in social media used by Generation Alpha (specifically Instagram). The project is the manifestation of an explorative research path seeking to alter the algorithms that form the basis of all the major platforms in current cyberspace, and in "Big Tech". This alteration is possible through the development of a community of virtual practice, consisting of students and faculty working within Instagram through an interactive approach, to take pedagogical advantage of their mobile phones and apps. The qualitative results show a series of media-educational content evidencing the pedagogical potential of the social media platform Instagram, and the possibility of reproducing the developed methodological model. The relationships between digital education, social media, and active learning are the prevalent components of this work. Along with these main aspects, this research will also treat the relationship between educational reciprocity and the ownership of knowledge, though the goal of the research action is not only to create a digital methodological model, but a community of virtual practices founded on the approach derived by the didactic strategies intrinsic to the Edu-social Algorithm. The practical aspect of this research involves a target group of classes in the final year of middle schools, reaching a total of 98 students and 57 teaching faculty, participating in the Edu-social Algorithm across seven classrooms in three different schools in Palermo (Italy). The students in the experimental classrooms showed, compared with the control classrooms which followed a traditional model, the possibility of learning through social media and improving one's own scholastic performance, intentionally leaving smartphones on in the classroom, when used in conjunction with educational strategies designed for healthy smartphone use in teaching and learning. The spread of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been recently generating worries among teachers and educators about the validity of assessment when students make use of AI tools to solve tasks. To tackle this issue, we propose mathematical problem solving activities to be carried out with the aid of ChatGPT, showing how problem solving and critical thinking continue to be pivotal in solving mathematical problems, even if this is performed with the aid of AI. After discussing theoretical frameworks on strategies of problem solving and phases of the critical thinking process, we present six problems of combinatorics that we submitted to ChatGPT. We also asked 40 university students to solve the six problems in group with the aid of ChatGPT during an international module on Problem Solving and Critical Thinking and collected the tutors' observations about the activities. Analyzing ChatGPT solutions and tutors' reflections, we show that the proposed activity requires problem solving and critical thinking to be accomplished. The results corroborate the idea that, instead of limiting the use of AI in education, it is possible to integrate it within learning and assessment to achieve the learning goals. With the growing prevalence of mobile apps for self-directed learning, educational games increasingly find their place in everyday routines, becoming accessible to a broad audience. Despite the growing ease of content creation by artificial intelligence computing, the challenge of designing effective and engaging Serious Games remains, particularly in managing cognitive resources and ensuring quality engagement, notably influenced by the game's interaction modalities. This study explores these challenges within the context of a casual mobile mental arithmetic game, investigating the differential impacts of tap and swipe interaction variants on cognitive load and reward-based engagement. The study presents the findings of an international field study on Google Play. In a between-group design, the two casual interaction paradigms were compared regarding their impact on practice performance, cognitive load and effect on classic casual game rewarding represented through points, leaderboards and badges. The findings show that tap interaction can optimise cognitive load with a better mental math practice performance than the more indirect swipe gesture. A combination of elementary tap interaction with point rank and interaction precision badges indicates to enhance practice motivation. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, high-schools in Spain are having both online and in-class lectures. As a result, the students can use not only the information provided by the teachers in class, but they can also use several other methods such as videos and online examples that allow the students to have materials from different places. In this paper, we analyse the Mathematics results of the first two terms in a secondary school from Andalusia. This analysis can help find the central units of the subject found, that is, giving enough background knowledge to keep up with the module. The goal of the paper is to understand to what degree the student success depends on teaching practices and materials, and to what degree it is due to differences in background, including prior knowledge, skills, preparation, abilities, etc. We analyzed the existing research on outcomes of the SAT and ACT in the United States and the Unified Country Exam (UCE) in the Russian Federation, since those exams usually considered as a good indicator of skills, preparation, and abilities. In the US, exams concentrate on identifying success in college studies. In the RF, exams concentrate on identifying gifted students. In the light of an educational emergency aggravated by the health emergency following the COVID-19 pandemic, the DELTA (Digital Education for Learning and Teaching Advances) Research Group developed four open online courses available to lower secondary school students and teachers. The four courses, devoted respectively to Numbers, Space and Shapes, Data and Predictions, Relations and Functions, contain interactive materials to support the teaching and learning of Mathematics. We have made the four open online courses available to teachers, tutors, and students within two projects. Both projects are aimed at lower secondary school students, especially those with difficulties in Mathematics. In this paper we discuss the methodologies and technologies used to develop the online courses and we show an example of the interactive materials that can be found within the courses. The results show the appreciation of the resources by teachers, tutors and students, a sign that open online educational resources can foster a change in Mathematics teaching and learning. Learning assistance is an essential part of higher education. Tutors, the core of the assistance staff, need to have learning assistance skills. If the potential for these skills can be identified when selecting tutors, the training method will be more efficient. Also, learning assistance skills are thought to be related to learning skills. Therefore, in this paper, we used previous research to identify the relationship between learning skills and learning assistance skills to clarify this. This study developed a training design for Senior High School students and teachers. The design was composed of four learning packets which were revised and finalized after an on-line try out. The researcher used five stages in the model to undertake the study. Seels and Glasgow's (2018) ADDIE model was modified by the researcher into Needs Analysis, Plan, Create, Try Out and Assess (NAPCTA) and was followed in the duration of the entire research process. The results of the needs analysis served as basis for the topics in the learning packets. Specifically, the study determined: (1) the anxiety level of the senior high school respondents, (2) the needs to be addressed in speech anxiety and (3) the contents of the learning packets as the research product. Mobile devices are being intensively used by the Portuguese youth in their daily life, but not in school activities. Despite this gap, research shows that technology can promote student learning in non-high education contexts. This paper comprises a survey study where mobile learning is analyzed through the eyes of 244 students attending the 2nd or 3rd Cycles of Basic Education (CBE). The acknowledged advantages and difficulties of the use of mobile devices for learning, as well as the educational value and usability of a specific mobile learning strategy, using the EduPARK app and game, were analyzed. Results revealed that most students owned a mobile device and were able to use them to learn. They had a positive perspective regarding mobile learning and valued the advantages of being easy to find up-to-date information, motivating for learning and easy to carry along. Nevertheless, students acknowledged difficulties in the use of mobile devices to learn, such as requiring an internet connection, its slowness, not being allowed to use mobile devices in schools as they facilitate access to distractions. The EduPARK game achieved an average Educational Value Scale of 83.8 and an average System Usability Scale of 80.2, indicating its high educational value and usability for students. This paper presents empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of the integration of mobile game-based AR approaches in 2nd and 3rd CBE to promote students learning. It also includes an example of excellent interdisciplinary educational materials that comprises a very useful tool for teachers and students to explore scientific knowledge by accessing appealing information on biological and historical references of a local urban park. It has long been debated whether the Open-Book-Open-Web exam was useful and efficient as the traditional closed book exams. Some scholars and practitioners have doubted the efficiency and the possibility of cheating in the OBOW as it is not directly monitored. This paper tends to investigate the effectiveness of OBOW exams by comparing them with the traditional closed book exams to reject or confirm the possibility of cheating and efficiency. Two different exams were conducted in three high schools and in a developing country, whereas 307 students participated in it. The first exam was done during the midterm with closed books and well monitored. Then the second exam was done at the end of semester by adopting the OBOW method. Each exam was done in two phases. Phase one consisted of multiple choice questions and phase two consisted of a mini case analysis. The results obtained were compared with each other. Furthermore, a focus group chosen from the teachers and students were done in order to support the findings in addition to questionnaire that was sent by email. The results had showed that there is no difference when it comes to cheating but on the contrary, there is a difference in the quality of the learning outcome. The purpose of this paper is to report on how the concepts of autonomy and ideology are perceived by scholars, educators and researchers. The project is a preliminarily study to investigate the connections between the language and computer literacies, that would lead to further influences the implications on the development of traditional language learning. The study will be covering 180 secondary students in two private schools (one is only girls, referred to as G school and the other is co-educational, referred to as BG school). This paper will mainly focus on comparing the students' performance and use of the electronic medium at school and at home. The G school students do not bring nor use any of the electronic medium at school, except when the library computers are booked by their teachers for research. They handwrite their notes and assignments in their workbooks. Their education is focused on mastering the autonomous dimensions of a given literacy, the ideological dimensions can present much more compelling and in depth challenges. The literature reviews differentiate between language literacy and computer literacy acquisitions, the two literacies require different skills from each other. Even though, the BG students are using their electronic devices at school as well as in their domestic environment for homework. They are using the devices more than seven to nine hours a day. They access their textbooks as eBooks on their devices and they compose their notes and school work electronically. However, the G students are also practising on their personal computers and are familiar in operating the software and hardware as much as the BG students who spend a substantial amount of time each day on their electronic devices. The purpose of this study was to identify, analyze, synthesize and evaluate research papers aimed at the application of metacognitive strategies to improve the quality of learning in secondary school students. This document is a systematic mapping (SM) which offers a comprehensive overview of the methods, indicators, strategies, techniques and instruments used in those research. A literature review was conducted in seven widely recognized databases in the educational and scientific community worldwide; 722 documents were found and from these 19 were relevant to the search objective. 57.89% applied metacognitive strategies as follows: 15.78% to learning quality 42.10% to learning processes or skills; 31.57% on learning quality, and 10.5% on learning processes without the intervention of metacognitive strategies. The results confirmed the application of metacognitive strategies such as: planning, monitoring, evaluation, underlining, self-evaluation, modeling, thinking aloud, consciously choosing, reflection and reflecting on learners 'ideas, keeping journals, predictions, among others. Learning processes such as: motivation, understanding, transferring, evaluation, selective attention, knowledge association and advanced organization were intervened. Indicators of the learning quality were also used: potential, processes, results, the academic performance, peer evaluation, intrinsic motivation, understanding, knowledge construction indicator, teacher's expectation indicator, the Students' growth indicator, the superficial level of learning, and the deep level of learning , the level of learning achievement. There was a knowledge gap in the application of metacognitive strategies to improve the learning quality of secondary school students, which confirms the need to conduct studies with this type of classroom interventions. This paper reports on a research and development project based upon problems in upper secondary school, namely students' lack of engagement, passive learning and students' absence from school. Looking to solve this problem, a group of upper secondary school teachers came across and saw potential in the concept, physical space and method of the "Active Learning Classroom (ALC)", a concept from higher education. The aim of this particular study was to explore teaching in the ALC from the perspective of power and control. The research questions embrace issues on both the physical learning environment of the ALC, teacher practices in the ALC and what kind of teacher practices enhance active learning. The theoretical framework was based on Bernstein's concepts of power and control. The study applied methods of video recorded classroom observations and field notes. The findings indicate a designed physical learning environment where power was conferred to the students. That placed demands on the teachers with regard to how they handled control in practice. Findings further indicate that when teachers had more active control over pace and sequencing, this increased productivity and more active learning among the students. Schools are facing a new challenge in their approach to education, due to the spreading of digital technologies. New tools and new ideas take shape at an increasing rate. Educators and teachers at all levels need to be trained and keep up to date with technological opportunities. Some help comes from official EU documents providing directions, guidelines, and reference framework. This is the case of the DigCompEdu, a resource about digital competences for educators, which lists 22 digital competences divided into six main areas equally important for the development of good practices in digital education. In this paper, we want to observe the list of competences in the "Problem Posing and Solving" project, an Italian experience with teachers in STEM disciplines , supported by the Italian ministry of Education; this project makes use of digital technologies of different kinds and innovative methodologies that enhance teaching and learning in secondary schools. The technologies and online supports that can offer students study opportunities have increased a lot in recent years, but often students do not use computers or mobile devices in school and, in general, for educational purposes. The Action of the University of Turin, within the "Ragazzi Connessi" project, proposes strategies for school recovery in Mathematics which involve the introduction of an online service built around an integrated Moodle platform with an advanced computing environment, an automatic assessment system and a web conference service, which enable the use of innovative didactics methodologies. The project involved teachers and students from three different secondary schools in the city of Genoa. This paper shows the main aspects of the platform and the strategies for school recovery developed inside the Action, in particular mathematics recovery path for students, carried out entirely online. COVID-19 presented a challenge to the traditional methods of teaching programming and robotics in a secondary school environment. When campuses were closed around the world in the spring of 2020, it was not possible for students to access the computer labs nor the robotics equipment that was traditionally used to facilitate the instruction of robotics programming units. This paper presents a design research project in which two secondary institutions in Canada and Turkey collaborated to teach computer science and robotics programming, specifically reinforcement learning, through the use of an online simulation environment. The two student cohorts in the study both were successful in developing reinforcement learning models for autonomous vehicles, despite not having any prior experience in machine learning nor artificial intelligence. The implications of this work are that physical robotics kits and dedicated robotics spaces are not essential to the teaching of programming and robotics. This is especially relevant to marginalized communities that do not have the resources to support robotics instruction, further exacerbating the digital divide.

Juniorstudy is a concept of the University of Rostock, which can be used by school students before starting their time at the University. Thus, it is an instrument of supporting the choice of study direction. Moreover, we have been able to show in our last cohort, that using Juniorstudy courses also helps to significantly enhance the knowledge required to start the university study, thus our courses become an important tool for bridging the gap between school and University. In this paper we will show the results of our study which shows that our approach improves the students' knowledge and thus facilitates being successful in testes and exams in the basic courses in the first term.

Theoretical background: Learning in virtual realities (VR) has become increasingly important. In this context, VR appears to be particularly conducive to affective learning objectives, such as perspective-taking in VR actors. Previous research has often focused on investigating cause-effect relationships that focus on the direct effects of different VR visualization technologies on learning outcomes. Little research has been conducted on more complex constellations of learning-related variables. Therefore, the present study aims at elaborating a research design that can be used to investigate both the direct effects of VR visualization technologies as well as the mediating effects of learning process variables latent in VR. For this purpose, the research design will be experimentally tested by comparing head-mounted display (HMD)-based VR with laptop-based VR with respect to the intended learning objectives, and controlling for influences by underlying learning processes (here: the experience of flow within VR). Methods: 132 students of grades eight and nine were recruited. The subjects were assigned to experimental conditions (HMD vs. laptop). The VR content dealt with the exploration of the hiding place of Anne Frank at the time of World War II in Amsterdam. Questionnaires were used to collect several data including sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge gain, perspective-taking, subjective evaluation, and the learning process variable flow. Results: A significant main effect for the variable VR visualization technology was uncovered averaged across all learning indicators. However, a superiority of HMD-based VR was found for the two evaluative indicators and also for the affective learning indicator. For the cognitive learning indicator, the effect was reverse. More relevant than unidirectional relationships are the mediating effects. Mediating effects through the experience of flow were discovered several times. Thus, the experience of flow within VR can significantly explain the cause-effect relationships between VR visualization technology and learning outcomes, even if, for the most part, only effects for evaluative indicators could be determined. Conclusion: The present study was able to exemplify that the investigation of complex interaction structures of VR visualization technologies and learning process variables can make a large contribution to the understanding of learning in VR environments. Advantages of HMD-based VR over laptop-based VR with respect to some learning indicators were uncovered. The significant findings of the mediation analyses point to the fact that the direct effects of VR visualization technologies on parameters of learning can be significantly explained by learning process variables such as flow experience and are systematically overestimated if such learning processes are not taken into account.

This study investigated how motivational orientations and learning strategies predict ninth graders' non-routine mathematical problem-solving anxiety. Non-routine mathematical problem-solving anxiety classification and prediction were investigated through TwoStep cluster analysis, linear discriminant analysis, and logistic regression. 274 ninth graders participated in the study. The participants were clustered based on their problem-solving achievements and test anxiety levels: high-level and low-level problem-solving anxiety. Extrinsic goal orientation, rehearsal, and peer learning were significant classifiers. Intrinsic goal orientation, self-efficacy, rehearsal, and help-seeking were significant predictors for ninth graders' non-routine mathematical problem-solving anxiety.

Some results of the basic school (14 years old) students' information and communication competence (ICC) in the digital environment study are discussed. About 30,000 students (14 years old) took part in the study. Information and Communication Literacy is considered as the ability to use digital technologies to search, manage, integrate, evaluate and create information. It is one of the key competencies that all of basic school graduates should obtain. As the availability of digital technologies grows, the gap in the ability of students to use them productively becomes more and more noticeable. The study identifies the actual students' information and communication competencies deficits at the stage of middle school completion. Performance-based online Information and Communication Literacy test (ICL-test) was the main research tool of the study. An attempt was made to determine to what extent the level of students' ICC is related to the work of the school, and to what extent it depends on the extracurricular environment. The results of the study indicate a strong connection between the ICC of ninth graders and their out-of-school environment and a weak connection with the work of the school. The reasons for the insufficient level of the ICC in a significant part of the graduates of the basic school are discussed and recommendations for its increase are proposed. It was found that ICL-test is a reliable online instrument to measure students' information and communication competence.

The concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) might seem something very distant from the world of schools: a theme that is far from today's reality, especially when the education and training system is committed to tackling the problems associated with the pandemic situation. However, the impact that AI is producing in various areas of our life also requires reflection on the world of education and training. Research and education policies are therefore required to direct education to prepare students for technological challenges, enabling schools and teachers to guide innovation. It is necessary to train teachers not only on the theoretical contents inherent to these themes, but also and above all on the planning of didactic activities to adopt innovative educational approaches. The context of this research is the immersive 3-hour workshop on the theme "Mathematics and AI" which involved 52 teachers from all over Italy from primary to secondary school. The research questions are: What is the current teaching practice in schools in Italy in terms of AI? Which characteristics should be emphasized, and which aspects should be favored in the planning of didactic activities by school teachers? To answer the research questions, we analyzed teachers' responses to the initial questionnaire before the workshop and to the final questionnaire at the end of the workshop. Key findings show that teachers do not treat AI-related topics too much with their classes while being aware of the importance of recognizing and understanding AI.

This study examined the influence of motivation and online self-regulation on students' online learning satisfaction. A sample of 1649 middle school students participated in the study. The findings suggested that online self-regulation and motivation played a driving role in students' online learning satisfaction and that motivation indirectly affected their online learning satisfaction through the three elements of a Community of Inquiry. These findings imply that both teachers and students should be targeted with interventions to improve students' satisfaction with their online learning. This research focuses on e-learning and its specific evolution applied to Basic and Secondary Education, taking into account new technological approaches, as evidenced by the marketing of school publishers in Portugal. Marketing strategies depend on educational complexity, and this research explores the possible impulse to promote e-learning in such environment. The research methodology focuses on the needs and motivations for a conceptual framework, including the development of e-learning supply processes, demand formation, and the interaction between supply and demand, which can be enhanced with appropriate public policies. The results of qualitative interpretations confirmed that beliefs about e-learning are generally influenced by most previous implementation processes and are still generally considered an unsurpassed failure. However, the evidence is modified by the new data on the impact that COVID-19 has on the entire educational organization process, specifically on technological dissemination and innovation. Price or free access and training offers forms the basis for the "mise en valeur" while marketing emphases the values of generosity, empathy and sharing of emotions. This study reports an impact assessment of the basic Arduino programming training conducted among select Junior High School Students in a National High School in Cagayan De Oro City. The Focus Group Discussion sessions and survey questionnaires via goggle form complemented the content of the impact study table. The researchers aimed to determine the impact of the training towards the perception of the trainees in programming, skills development and learning gain. Furthermore, the training program used was evaluated by both trainers and trainees in terms of content, strategies and activities used. Research results showed the respondents' negative perception on Arduino programming yet manifested positive views on the training for programming skills development and enhancement of learning. The COVID-19 epidemic had caused one of the most significant disruptions to the global education system. Many educational institutions faced sudden pressure to switch from face-to-face to online delivery of courses. The conventional classes are no longer the primary means of delivery; instead, online education and resources have become the prominent approach. With the increasing demand for supplementary course materials to fulfill the needs of each area of study, students began to use search engines and online resources that contain discussions, practical demonstrations, and tutorial videos to aid students in their studies and course work. This study addresses the underlying challenges of retrieving relevant online educational materials by introducing an intelligent agent for semantic data mining. It works as middleware infrastructure that allow context-aware data processing and mining. YouTube was used to assess the consistency of the proposed model since it returns a large number of results in its search pool. The results showed that using the extraction of topics method, the similarities scores with the proposed model provided favorable results. Furthermore, an improvement in video ranking and sorting was realized. According to the findings, using this method provided users with a more productive and reliable study experience. This paper reports on a study about teachers' practice in one-to-one computing classrooms in Social Studies in upper secondary school. In the study, two teachers were followed in their daily practice with students where the observer collected empirical material through classroom observations, informal discussions and interviews. The teachers taught both academic and vocational programs in Social Studies and all students were equipped with a personal laptop. The aim and research questions demonstrate an attempt to both explore and explain how different power and control relations contribute to describe these teachers' practice as either teacher-centered or student-centered. The theoretical framework was based on Bernsteins' theory regarding symbolic power and control. Both teachers used one-to-one computing to extend the students learning outside the school building but they demonstrated two different theoretically informed practices. These teachers' practice involved the students to different extent in the decisions about, for example, content, sequence and how the classes should be organized individually or in groups. The different teaching approaches reflects how the teachers either kept or distributed power and control to the students. The findings contribute to understand the differences between teacher-centered and student-centered practice. [For the complete proceedings, see ED601080.]

The professional development of teachers is a task recognized by the European parliament and pursued by many institutions, both national and international ones. The support to teachers in STEM disciplines was one of the aims of the Erasmus+ SMART (Science and Mathematics Advanced Research for good Teaching) project, born in a European context, which developed as its main intellectual output two open online courses called Mathematical Modelling and Observing, Measuring and Modelling in Science, in order to help teachers in their continuous professional development. Both courses contain interactive problem-based materials ready to be downloaded, modified, used in the classroom and redistributed to the community. This paper gives an overview of the structure of the course Mathematical Modelling and analyzes its instructional quality, taking into account some measurables obtained in two years of operativity. The purpose of the article is to identify conditions for the effective use of visual modeling tools that can help reduce the difficulty level of solving problems during the teaching high school students programming. Visual modeling tools are a type of software that allows you to create visual abstractions that reproduce concepts and objects of the real world with their relationships, which can help in solving the problem. In this paper, we focused on preformal models based on intellect- and concept-maps. The article gives a classification and describes techniques for using various visual modeling tools to solve problem tasks. Formed skills of working with such tools will allow students to produce, represent and express independently their knowledge. In addition, these tools allow structuring the process of solving the problem, optimizing the time for solving each stage of solving a problem task. The article presents the results of comparing the learning outcomes of the control and experimental groups, which show that the proposed visual modeling tools can help in solving the programming problem tasks. We live in a digital world and our students are surrounded by technologies: it is essential that they learn how to use the digital tools available for education purposes. As for language teaching, among the most recent technologies we can find online dictionaries. They could play a key role to foster language competences, and yet they are not very popular in schools. In order to increase the use of online dictionaries among students, the University of Turin has promoted the nation-wide project 'Esplorare (con) i Dizionari Digitali'. This project makes the most of a Learning Management System (https://esploradizionari.i-learn.unito.it/) that allowed the creation of a student-centered environment. The integration of the platform with an Automatic Assessment System allowed the design and creation of tests to be carried out through the consultation of online dictionaries. In this paper, we analyze the answers given by almost 600 students in 5 different tests on different languages, and we try to understand whether the methodologies and technologies adopted have been influential in making students "meta-linguistic aware" and researchers "meta-design aware". The results obtained show in a statistically significant way that the students who made a larger use of online dictionaries performed better in the tests. Many students are not good at geometric proofs. One reason for this is that it is possible to memorize the proof procedure explained by the teacher without understanding the structure of a geometric proof. So far, we have developed a web-based application that supports the understanding of the "structure of geometric proofs" in junior high school mathematics and have verified its effectiveness. Although the results of the evaluation experiments have indicated the usefulness of this web-based application, it was not possible to identify the factors that brought about its usefulness. In addition, because the web-based application was not equipped with a log analysis function, it was not possible to grasp the aspects that students struggle with during a proof in the web-based application. In this paper, we present the results and problems of the evaluation experiment of the web-based application so far and discuss the newly added log analysis function. The introduction of a learning organisation model brings many benefits to organisations. To evaluate whether it is a learning organisation, the Marsick and Watkins Dimensions of a Learning Organisation Questionnaire can be used. In the Czech Republic, only a few studies have been conducted using this questionnaire. The aim of this paper is to compare the IT sector and the education sector in terms of learning time and assessment of the individual dimensions of the learning organisation by Marsick and Watkins. In 2018 and 2019, studies with the Dimensions of a Learning Organisation Questionnaire focusing on the IT sector and the education sector (secondary schools) were conducted in the Czech Republic. In total, 201 respondents from the IT sector and 121 respondents from secondary schools participated in the study. When comparing the time spent on self-education in both sectors, it is clear that the employees spend 1 to 20 hours per month with self-education, while in the IT sector common employees dedicate more to self-education, executives dedicate more to self-education in the education system. When comparing the average values of the dimensions of a learning organisation in relation to the time spent on self-education, the results in both sectors are very similar. It can be argued that the assessment of individual dimensions increases with the time spent on self-education up to 20 hours per month. The biggest difference in average values can be seen in Dimension 4, while the smallest difference on average dimension can be seen in Dimension 7. [For the complete proceedings, see ED608557.]

Students need help in transitioning from high school to university. It's important to facilitate their guidance in choosing the course of study and consequently their experience with the first exams, reducing the abandonment. The University of Turin, financially supported by the banking institution Compagnia di San Paolo, has invested in e-learning creating Start@unito: a Learning Management System that delivers twenty freely available, self-paced, online courses on different topics.
