The accurate estimation of the zigzag leakage flux losses (ZZLFL) caused by the slot harmonics and their interactions, which occupy a high proportion of stray losses, are of great significance in the efficiency calculation as well as the optimization design for the wet submersible induction machine (WSIM). In this paper, a two‐dimensional finite element method (FEM) is presented to separate ZZLFL into the iron losses and the eddy‐current losses. The air‐gap magnetic flux density is decomposed by the two‐dimensional fast Fourier transform at a sampling frequency of 5000 Hz. The hybrid excited virtual permanent magnet harmonic machine model is applied to reconstruct the air‐gap magnetic field and excite the stator and rotor separately. Each node harmonic iron losses are acquired through the modified Bertotti iron losses model with the consideration of high‐frequency power losses as a function of the magnetic flux density. The zigzag flux losses provided by different harmonics are obtained by subtracting the hybrid excitation losses. According to the different proportions of harmonic losses among zigzag flux losses, novel WSIM models are proposed in the paper to decrease zigzag flux losses and increase the efficiency. Abstract in order to study the torque ripple of permanent magnet synchronous motor for electric vehicle, the method of modular poles instead of single pole is adopted to reduce the torque ripple. The modular poles consist of three kinds of permanent magnets with different remanence and are arranged in a sinusoidal distribution. The pole arc length and position of each magnetic pole are calculated according to the cutting area of sinusoidal air gap flux density wave. By changing the cutting area of sinusoidal air gap flux density wave, the optimal pole arc coefficient of each permanent magnet was determined, and the magnet pole combination with the smallest torque ripple value is obtained. The results show that the sine degree of back electromotive force is improved obviously, the cogging torque is decreased greatly, and the motor with modular poles has obvious effect on torque ripple suppression. The torque of the motor with different kinds of magnetic pole combination is more stable than that of the motor with the same kind of magnetic pole combination. This paper presents a strategy for direct‐driving a turbine with an external rotor high‐speed permanent magnet motor. It is used to improve the large footprint, low efficiency, high maintenance costs, and high vibration risk of turbines. Combining the characteristics of the working conditions of pipeline gas transmission, this paper takes a 200 kW, 10 000 rpm external rotor high‐speed permanent magnet motor as an example. This paper analyzes the eddy current losses in the rotor due to the armature magnetomotive force generated by the stator fundamental and harmonic currents. To reduce eddy current losses in permanent magnets, a circumferentially segmented pole structure is proposed for theoretical comparison and FEA with common surface‐mounted pole structures under different loads and work angles. The results confirm that the circumferentially segmented pole can effectively reduce the eddy current loss of the permanent magnet rotor. The effect of variations in the pole arc coefficient on eddy current losses in permanent magnets is also analyzed. Finally, the temperature field simulation of the motor is carried out under consideration of wind mill losses. By setting up three comparison groups with different conditions, this paper analyses the influence of the temperature and flow rate of the gas on the temperature rise and heat dissipation of the motor in a high‐temperature gas environment. © 2023 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Fractional slot concentrated winding (FSCW) is a kind of winding structure with few‐slots/coils multi‐poles. FSCW has the potential value of high torque density due to its short end‐winding and high slot fill ratio and is widely used in low‐speed direct‐drive application situations. However, compared with integral slot winding (ISW), the back EMF coefficient of FSCW is smaller, which leads to smaller output torque under the same condition. To improve the back EMF coefficient of FSCW, equidirectional toroidal winding (ETW) is proposed and applied to the dual rotor slotless axial flux permanent magnet motor (AFPM), in which the unit structure is three slots/coils two poles, and the ideal back EMF coefficient is the same as that of ISW. In this paper, firstly, the structure of ETW is introduced and its operating principle is analyzed. Then, compared with the AFPM with ISW, the open circuit and load characteristics of the AFPM with ETW under two conditions of the same wire gauge and the same coil width are analyzed respectively. The back EMF coefficient and output torque of ETW‐AFPM are similar to that of ISW‐AFPM under the same coil width. The back EMF coefficient and output torque of ETW‐AFPM are a little lower than that of ISW‐AFPM under the same wire gauge. Compared to the model predictive control (MPC) technique, the modulated MPC (M2PC) method applies multiple voltage vectors in order within one switching cycle, enabling a fixed switching frequency and better motor control performance. However, the M2PC technique suffers from a significant computational burden and imprecise allocation method of the vector action time, affecting the control performance. To address these two issues, this paper proposes an improved M2PC method that utilizes the information of projection of the reference vector on the selected voltage vectors for efficiently selecting the optimal active vectors and also accurately calculating their action time. Compared to the conventional M2PC, the proposed technique demonstrates both excellent dynamic performance with reduced execution time by 15.3% and superior steady‐state performance in terms of lower torque/speed ripple as well as fewer current harmonics. Compared with multi‐phase single‐module permanent magnet motors, three‐phase multi‐modularized permanent magnet motors have stronger fault tolerance ability, widely used in aerospace, ship propulsion, and other special fields. Especially in ship direct‐drive propulsion, low speed and high torque modular combined stator fault‐tolerant permanent magnet motor (MCS‐FTPMSM) has high torque density, and fault‐tolerant operation conditions may appear in actual operation, so it is essential to analyze the temperature of the fault‐tolerant motor accurately. This paper analyzes the temperature of MCS‐FTPMSM under different operating conditions and determines the longest operating time of the motor under different fault‐tolerant operating conditions based on the 3D electromagnetic‐temperature bi‐directional coupling method. Among them, the loss of the motor is calculated by the 3D electromagnetic field, which is added to the 3D temperature field as an excitation, and then the material properties in the 3D electromagnetic field are updated according to the calculated temperature distribution. The cyclic iteration method is used to make the calculated temperature deviation less than the given error value. When analyzing the electromagnetic loss of the motor, the field‐circuit coupling method is adopted to consider the influence of the current time‐harmonics of the controller on the loss of the motor during actual operation. Finally, the 12kw100r/min 3 × 3 modular prototype was tested. By comparing the results of experiments, one‐way coupling method (OWCM) and bi‐directional coupling method (BDCM), it is found that the electromagnetic‐thermal bi‐directional coupling can more accurately predict the temperature of the fault‐tolerant motor. © 2021 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. This paper proposes a simple and efficient method to weaken the cogging torque of the direct‐drive permanent magnet motor with inner enhance force (IEF‐DDPMM). It is characterized by adjusting the relative position of the inner and outer permanent magnets so that the cogging torque generated by the inner and outer air‐gaps is opposite in phase, thus eliminating or weakening a certain order of cogging torque. For IEF‐DDPMM, the expression of cogging torque and the variation law of cogging torque with the staggered‐pole angle are derived by the analytical method. The relationship between optimal staggered‐pole angle and the pole‐slot combination is analyzed. The influence of staggered‐pole on average torque and torque ripple is analyzed. Finally, the commercial finite element software ANASYS‐Maxwell is used for simulation, and the simulation results are consistent with the analytical results. The results show that the cogging torque of IEF‐DDPMM is the linear superposition of cogging torque from inner and outer parts; choosing a suitable staggered‐pole angle can effectively weaken the cogging torque and reduce the torque ripple. The axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machines with the parallel magnetic circuit (PMC) rotor can effectively improve its torque density. The PMC rotor consists of two sub‐rotors, radial Halbach array permanent magnet (PM) and tangential PM. The magnetic fields generated by two sub‐rotors are not in the same 2‐D analytical planes. In this paper, an equivalent analytical model of PMC‐AFPM machines is proposed to solve this problem. The radial Halbach array PM rotor is equated to the axial Halbach array PM rotor based on the equivalent transformation principle. The exact subdomain models of equivalent axial Halbach array PM rotor and tangential PM rotor are built respectively and then superimposed to obtain the magnetic field distribution. The electromagnetic characteristics of the PMC‐AFPM machine under no‐load and load conditions are calculated by the proposed analytical model and compared with calculations of the finite element model (FEM). The results verify the accuracy of the equivalent analytical model. Halbach array has been more frequently used in the field of electromagnetism in recent days because of some unique advantages such as the self‐shielding and sinusoidal field distribution. In order to reduce the impact of the high order harmonic content of the air‐gap flux density of the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) on the performance of the machine, a new non‐uniform Halbach array structure is proposed in this paper. Firstly, an equivalent analytical model is established to analyze the influence on the air‐gap flux density. At the same time, the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor model is built by using the finite element analysis. Then, the relationship between the air‐gap flux density and the four design parameters (the thickness of the permanent magnet, the magnetization angle, the angle of the permanent magnet, and the proportion of auxiliary magnetic poles) is analyzed by using the Taguchi method orthogonal experiment. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of air‐gap magnetic fields and its fundamental harmonic amplitude are employed as the evaluation criteria. The eccentric harmonic magnetic gear (EHMG) has the characteristics of high torque density, high transmission ratio and high efficiency. The EHMG with Halbach array has better performance than the EHMG with traditional radial magnetization. Accurate calculation of its air‐gap magnetic field is of great significance for design and optimization. Based on the boundary perturbation method, a 2D analytical model of the air‐gap magnetic field of EHMG with Halbach array is established in this paper. The eccentric air‐gap magnetic field is calculated due to the permanent magnets of the eccentric rotor and the stator acting alone, and then the air‐gap magnetic field of the EHMG is obtained according to the superposition principle. The results of the air‐gap magnetic field are compared and evaluated by the regression evaluation indexes. The analytical results are consistent with the finite element results, which verifies the validity and accuracy of the analytical model. Cogging torque can affect the performance of permanent magnet (PM) homopolar inductor machines (HIMs). In order to find the reduction methods of the PM HIM cogging torque, it is necessary to investigate its production mechanism and analytical model. In this paper, the production mechanism of the PM HIM cogging torque is revealed from the perspective of air‐gap field modulation principle. It is found that the air‐gap permeance of PM HIMs can modulate their air‐gap magneto‐motive force (MMF) and then a large number of modulated air‐gap magnetic fields are generated. These magnetic fields with identical production condition but different rotation speeds or rotation directions can interact with each other, hence the production of the PM HIM cogging torque. By the combination of energy method and air‐gap field modulation principle, the cogging torque analytical model of PM HIMs is derived. Based on the obtained analytical model, the methods for reducing the PM HIM cogging torque are further analyzed. Finally, a 48‐slot/4‐pole (48S4P) PM HIM is designed and exampled. The air‐gap flux density of the 48S4P PM HIM is simulated by three‐dimensional (3‐D) finite element analysis (FEA). Based on the harmonic analysis for the simulated results, the correctness of the proposed cogging torque production mechanism is validated. In addition, a prototype of the 48S4P PM HIM is manufactured. The cogging torque in the prototype is obtained by the analytical model, 3‐D FEA and experiments, respectively. Active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) has been widely used in the permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) drive system for its strong anti‐disturbance ability and fast response speed. However, a large number of adjustment parameters add difficulties to its application. To solve this problem, a novel sliding mode‐based active disturbance rejection control (SM‐ADRC) with autotuned parameters is proposed in this paper. In this control strategy, the SM is incorporated with extended state observer (ESO) and nonlinear state error feedback (NLSEF) to reduce the number of adjustment parameters. The simulated annealing particle swarm optimization (SAPSO) algorithm is carried out to achieve the optimal configuration and realize parameter self‐tuning. The double‐sided permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (DS‐PMLSM) is widely used in the industrial field with high precision and long strokes due to simple construction, high instantaneous thrust and high controllability. However, parasitic issues, such as unavoidable manufacturing tolerances, might cause the symmetrical position deviation of primary or secondary components, which results in an asymmetrical air‐gap between components, affecting the motor's electromagnetic characteristics further. In this paper, it is taken into account secondary torsional or offset conditions (the secondary component is displaced sideways from a symmetrical position), and investigates the variations of electromagnetic characteristics on the 12‐solt 14‐pole short‐primary DS‐PMLSM. Based on the finite element method (FEM), the effects of secondary torsion or offset on the air‐gap flux density, the back‐EMF, the detent force, the thrust force, and the normal force are investigated and compared respectively. In addition, the analytical results of the back‐EMF considering lower secondary torsion are verified on a lower secondary torsional prototype. From the analytical results of electromagnetic characteristics, it is revealed that with the torsional angle or offset distance rising, the normal force and detent force in the Y‐axis gradually increase, while the thrust force and the back‐EMF decrease. In order to reduce the thrust ripple caused by the detent force and improve the thrust capacity of the permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM), a flat‐type PMLSM is taken as the study object to globally optimize the motor parameters. Firstly, an analytical model for PMLSM is established. The end effect force based on the virtual displacement principle and the cogging force using the equivalent air gap length are considered when analyzing the model. The detent force is found that closely related to the relative position of the primary and secondary, the end air gap volume and the equivalent air gap length. Then, a motor structure optimization method based on parameter classification is proposed in this paper. By sensitivity analysis, the parameters are divided into two types. For parameters with high sensitivity, the response surface methodology (RSM) is used to establish the second‐order regression equation between parameters and response, and then these parameters are optimized by the multi‐population genetic algorithm (MPGA) to improve thrust capacity and reduce thrust ripple. The optimal values of parameters with low sensitivity are obtained by the parametric search. Finally, the optimized motor is used to predict its thrust performance by the finite element method (FEM). The fractional slot concentrated winding structure effectively solves the difficulty of low‐speed and high‐torque permanent magnet (PM) machines with a large number of poles and slots, but it also brings a wealth of magnetomotive force (MMF) harmonic. The winding function method is used to compare and analyze the stator MMF distribution and harmonic content of the fractional slot PM machines with different pole and slot combinations, and the cogging torque waveform and torque ripple are calculated by the finite element method. The influence of pole and slot combination on radial force and vibration modes of fractional slot PM machines is studied. The main vibration mode can be determined from the lowest order of radial force harmonics. The results show that in a fractional slot PM motor, the radial force is the main cause of noise and vibration, rather than the cogging torque and torque ripple. The dominant radial force is mainly produced by the interaction of rotor field harmonics and armature reaction field harmonics, and the vibration and noise will significantly increase with the decrease of the dominant vibration mode order, which largely depends on the pole and slot combination. With the wide use of new energy vehicles, the research and development of high‐performance generators become more important. The claw pole machine is very suitable to be used as an automobile generator because of its unique characteristics. However, its development is limited by the disadvantage of abundant harmonic content, especially when used with fractional slot concentrated winding layout. A novel dual‐direction hybrid excitation generator (DDHEG) is proposed in this paper. It has dual 3‐phase winding layout to reduce spatial subharmonic magnet motive force (MMF). Also, it uses dual 3‐phase rectifier bridge circuit to reduce armature current, so as to reduce copper loss. It uses rotor sleeve to reduce the eddy current loss in the rotor and permanent magnets (PMs) caused by higher order harmonics. It has hybrid excitation from both directions to improve the efficiency and terminal voltage. The basic characteristics of DDHEG are analyzed by finite element analysis (FEA) method. The highlights of the proposed DDHEG are illustrated. Hybrid excited machine (HEM) is a novel type of machine which has attracted much attention as it is able to adjust the flux linkage flexibly and ensure the wide speed range operation. In this paper, a novel brushless HEM with permanent magnet (PM) located in rotor is further researched. By supplying specific armature currents, the sub‐harmonic component magnetomotive force (MMF) in stator MMF would be generated and utilized to realize the brushless hybrid excited operation. Firstly, the generation principle of the sub‐harmonic component is derived analytically. Secondly, during the brushless hybrid excited operation, the influence of the stator current amplitude ratio m$$ m $$ is quantitatively studied. Thirdly, based on 2D finite element analysis (FEA), the electromagnetic performance of the brushless HEM is analyzed under different operation statuses over a wide speed range. According to the air‐gap flux density (AGFD) and the thickness of the permanent magnet (PM) in the direction of magnetization, this paper proposes a modified analytical model for the sine pole‐shaping surface‐mounted permanent magnet motor (SPMM) under parallel magnetization. The construction of the model also involves the Carter coefficient formula, the principle of magnetic‐circuit equivalence, and the distributed magnetic‐circuit method, which are used to deal with such influential factors as stator slotting, interpolar magnetic leakage, edge effect, and magnetic‐circuit saturation. Then, a finite‐element model is established to verify the analytical model through simulation. The results show that the fundamental amplitude of AGFD of the modified sine pole‐shaping motor is respectively 6.4 and 0.15% higher than that of the simplified sine pole‐shaping motor and the eccentric pole‐shaping motor, and that the total harmonic distortion of AGFD the former is respectively 67.2 and 11.1% lower than that of the latter, thereby causing an increase in average torque of the sine pole‐shaping motor and a decrease in its radial electromagnetic harmonics and torque ripple. Experiments show that both the modified analytical and finite‐element model are accurate. And, the proposed analytical model which does not need ergodic scanning as the eccentric pole‐shaping method can further optimize the electromagnetic performance of the motor. This paper deduces an exact model of analytical calculation for the multilayer rotor eddy current losses of high‐speed permanent magnet machines based on the subdomain method. The analytical calculation model solution domain is divided into six parts of subdomains, including permanent magnet, shielding layer, metal retaining sleeve, air gap, slot openings, and windings. The Laplace equation of the air subdomain and the diffusion equation of the eddy current subdomain and the windings subdomain are established with the vector magnetic potential as the independent variable. The eddy current losses of the permanent magnet, shielding layer, and retaining sleeve of the multilayer rotor are calculated considering the slots effect and eddy current reaction. This analytical model is used to study the interfering factors of the multilayer rotor eddy current losses including the shielding layer thickness, carrier ratio, and modulation ratio. The demand for highly efficient motors has risen because of the increase in the number of hybrid electrical vehicles and electrical vehicles. Eddy current loss in the motors, which is generated by leakage of magnetic flux interlinked with the winding, is one factor that leads to the decrease in efficiency. This is a survey paper focusing on permanent magnet motors with variable field capability. The synchronous motors, which have been applied to somewhat limited fields, have garnered attention as attractive electric drives. Due to a connection with rare‐earth magnet and power electronics‐based flexible control, current permanent magnet synchronous motors have achieved the best position in terms of high power and torque densities, high efficiency and flexible control capability. In order to satisfy the diverse demands of users, a motor is requested to ensure high‐efficiency operation at multiple operating points on the speed–torque plane. It is well recognized that maximum efficiency is attained under the condition that the copper loss is equal to the fixed loss, mainly composed of iron loss, at a given operating point. This is why permanent magnet synchronous motors should have the capability of adjusting the field excitation, similar to the direct current shunt motors. A calculation model of radial electromagnetic force wave for permanent magnet assisted reluctance motor (PMaSynRM) with rotor slots is proposed in this paper. By introducing complex air gap relative permeance, the improved magnetic potential permeability method is applied to the calculation of electromagnetic force wave of the PMaSynRM. Considering the influence of both stator and rotor slots, the characteristics of electromagnetic force wave are analyzed theoretically. A multi‐physical coupling model of PMaSynRM is established. The natural frequency of the stator core is obtained by modal finite element analysis and modal hammer experiment. The harmonic response is analyzed by loading electromagnetic force wave into the structure field and the vibration on the housing surface is calculated. The results show that although the amplitude of electromagnetic force is small at zero‐order slot frequency, the vibration caused by electromagnetic force at frequency of stator slots and rotor slots, especially at the rotor slot frequency, is the biggest vibration source. Because the magnetic circuits of homopolar inductor machines (HIMs) are three‐dimensional (3‐D), a 3‐D finite element model (FEM) is usually built to accurately compute the cogging torque in HIMs, but the drawback is very time‐consuming in modeling and computing. Therefore, a two‐dimensional (2‐D) FEM of HIMs is needed to simplify the computation of the 3‐D FEM. However, the existing odd harmonic 2‐D FEM cannot accurately predict the cogging torque in HIMs. To address this problem, this paper proposes a full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEM. First, the analytical expressions of HIM cogging torque are derived by the combination of energy method and air‐gap field modulation principle. Based on the obtained analytical expressions, the equivalent principles between the 3‐D and 2‐D FEMs are analyzed. According to the above equivalent principles and taking a 48‐slot/4‐tooth (48S4T) permanent magnet (PM) HIM as an example, a full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEM of the example machine excited by a field winding is proposed. The structure of the full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEM is described in detail. The turn number of field winding and field current amplitude of the proposed 2‐D FEM are investigated. The differences between the odd harmonic 2‐D and full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEMs are also analyzed. Finally, the cogging torque in the 48S4T PM HIM with distinct rotor tooth‐arc to tooth‐pitch ratios is computed by 3‐D, odd harmonic 2‐D and full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEMs of the machine, respectively. The results illustrate that compared with the odd harmonic 2‐D FEM, the full‐order harmonic 2‐D FEM can shorten the calculation time and has the similar computation accuracy as the 3‐D FEM. Moreover, the experimental validation is performed on a prototype of the 48S4T PM HIM. The cooling performance of the machine with the closed liquid cooling system is excellent. However, the electromagnetic characteristics of the oil separator which sealing the cooling oil in the stator side can have a significant impact on the performance of the machine. In this paper, a liquid cooling structure with the magnetic oil separator is proposed. Taking the 20 000 rpm high‐speed permanent magnet generator as an example, the influence of the electromagnetic parameters of the magnetic oil separator on the generator output performance is studied by the analytical calculation and the finite element method, and the mechanism of the nonlinear variation of the generator output performance with the permeability of the oil separator is obtained. The influence of the oil separator on the air‐gap magnetic field and electromagnetic force is analyzed, and the reduction mechanism of the different permeability of the oil separator on the harmonic magnetic field and radial force is revealed. The vibration acceleration response of the generator stator is obtained through the modal and harmonic response analysis, it is confirmed that the magnetic oil separator has the effect of reducing vibration. In addition, the 3‐D temperature field calculation model of the generator is established, the influence of the thermal parameters of the oil separator on the internal heat exchange of the generator is studied, and the temperature distribution is obtained. The dual‐stator permanent magnet (PM) machine has the advantages of high torque density, high efficiency, and compact size, which makes it suitable for low‐speed high‐torque applications. A dual‐stator low‐speed high‐torque permanent magnet drive machine (DLHPMDM) is discussed and studied in this paper, which is applied to the ball mill application. First, in order to meet the requirements of high efficiency and high reliability, a DLHPMDM with the inner and outer windings connected in parallel is obtained through the designs carried out in terms of the magnetic circuit structure, structural size, and the pole‐slot number combination. However, for the DLHPMDM with the inner and outer windings connected in parallel, the power allocation between the inner and outer machines is a critical problem that needs to be accurately analyzed, and the circulating current between the two sets of windings is also a particular issue that merit attention. Therefore, a new modeling method is proposed for the DLHPMDM to solve such cases more accurately. The proposed new method combines the advantages of the rapidity of the finite element analysis (FEA) with current excitations and the accuracy of the FEA with voltage excitations. Finally, a prototype of the DLHPMDM is manufactured and tested. This paper proposes a multiparameter estimation method for surface‐mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine (SPMSM) under constant load torque, of which the variations of dq‐axis inductances and rotor flux linkage have been taken into consideration. Second, the voltage equations will be transformed to eliminate the distorted voltage caused by the voltage‐source inverter nonlinearity. On this basis, an improved variable‐step Adaline neural network algorithm based on hyperbolic tangent function is proposed to estimate the parameters of SPMSM online, which can increase the convergence speed and reduce the steady‐state errors compared to the traditional algorithm. Finally, in view of the high sensitivity of inductance, another new method that can reduce the fluctuation rate is proposed. Feed screws are used in various industrial machines and robots to convert rotational motions into linear motions. Mechanical screws, such as ball screws and slide screws, transmit force via frictional contacts through which noise and heat are being generated; thus, the drive efficiency is decreased. To address these problems, we have proposed some types of magnetic lead screws (MLSs) without spiral permanent magnets. The design has no spiral permanent magnets and comprises relatively few components. However, the differences in the thrust density and productivity due to the structural differences have not been reported. This paper investigates and discusses the performance and productivity of the MLSs without spiral permanent magnets based on a magnetic field analysis using a three‐dimensional finite element method. The MLSs are designed under the same size and basic design parameters. To enhance the torque of short‐time duty permanent magnet (PM) dual‐redundancy brushless DC motors (DR‐BLDCM) and avoid the motor overheating under a fixed outer diameter and length, a design method based on the optimization of split ratio and stator magnetic density (Bm) considering thermal limitations is presented. The global thermal limitation of DR‐BLDCM is set by limiting loss density. The local thermal limitation of the winding is set by limiting current density. The thermal limitations are taken as the boundary of torque enhancement design optimization. Both the cold backup and hot backup DR‐BLDCM are studied in this paper. By researching the relationship between torque, split ratio, and Bm, the optimal combination of split ratio and Bm are calculated analytically. The influences of thermal limitations on the maximum torque and the optimal combination are analyzed, and the principle to determine the optimal combination is obtained. The analytically calculated results are verified by finite element simulation, and the error is less than 6.82%. A prototype is manufactured based on analytical design results. The error between the calculated and measured copper loss is 6.96%. The verification results show that the proposed optimization method can fully enhance the torque of DR‐BLDCM under the condition of fixed overall dimension and thermal limitations. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. A novel tubular single‐phase linear generator with an axially magnetized permanent magnets (PM) mover is proposed in this paper for the application of free‐piston engine, which is an alternative power generation system of next‐generation electric vehicle. The transient 3D with motion electromagnetic field finite element model is created to analyze the EMF and thrust force characteristics of the linear generator. A 1.4 kW prototype with the max stroke of 40 mm and the max thrust force of 1670 N is developed, and main performances of the prototype are tested and validated with the finite element simulation. The prototype generating efficiency of 84 and 91% can be obtained respectively when driving by the 35 and 50 Hz sinusoidal reciprocation motion. Compared with the existed moving coil linear generator with similar generating efficiency, the mass power density and the volumetric power density of the new linear generator increase by about 37 and 80%, respectively. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. On the basis of existing studies presented in literature on optimizing permanent magnet (PM) shaping with third harmonic for the tile‐shaped magnetic poles under radial magnetization, this paper proposes a method for PM shape optimization using third harmonic for bread‐shaped magnetic pole under parallel magnetization. Furthermore, the optimal value of third harmonic that should be injected for achieving maximum torque output of a surface‐mounted permanent‐magnet (SPM) motor under parallel magnetization is obtained. The accuracy of the analytical calculation is verified using the finite element method. Furthermore, electromagnetic properties, including back‐EMF waveform, cogging torque, average torque, and torque ripple of the SPM motor obtained under different PM shaping conditions, i.e., without PM shaping, sinusoidal PM shaping, and sinusoidal PM shaping with third harmonic are compared. The comparison results indicate that injecting the optimal value of third harmonic into the PM being subject to sinusoidal shaping can greatly improve the average torque and power density of the SPM motor without increasing the torque ripple. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Since it can be difficult to directly estimate the temperature of permanent magnets (PM) in high‐density permanent magnet motor rotors, this paper proposes a method based on lumped parameter thermal networks (LPTN) for online estimation of PM temperature. Firstly, a parameter model is established that contains a four‐node thermal network model and a loss model. For the online estimation, an extended Kalman filter algorithm with fading factor is used to dynamically update the thermal network parameter model in order to estimate the PM temperature. The simulation and experimental results show that the parameter model can quickly converge to a value that is close to the true value. Therefore, this online estimation method for PM temperature can accurately monitor the PM temperature online without increasing the required motor hardware; thus not affecting the motor operation. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. The purpose of this paper is to realize a two‐stage transmission magnetic‐geared (2‐STMG) machine with high gear ratio. The proposed machine contains a concentric magnetic gear (CMG) and a Vernier machine (VM). Both the components meet the magnetic gearing effect and share a common high‐speed rotor (HSR). The VM is the first stage, and the CMG is the second stage. The designed gear ratio of the proposed 2‐STMG is 34. The magnetic flux is partially coupled to the HSR yoke. The cogging torque on the HSR is slightly higher than that on the low‐speed rotor (LSR). A method is presented to detect the gear ratio of magnetic geared machines with the back‐electromotive force (back‐EMF). And the evaluated gear ratio of the prototype is found to be close to the design value. The amplitude of the fundamental back‐EMF is nearly linear with the LSR speed, and the slope of the fitting curve is ∼0.16 V/rpm. The peak static torques on both rotors are positively correlated with the DC currents applied to windings but limited by saturation when current is larger than 4A. The 2‐STMG machine is controllable, and the speed ratio of HSR to LSR is close to the gear ratio of the outer CMG. © 2019 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. This paper reports a diamagnetic levitation thermometer using a pyrolytic graphite (PG). The levitation height of diamagnetic materials depends on the temperature. The system is composed of a PG disc, permanent magnet for driving, non‐contact laser displacement meter, and spot heater. We evaluated the height in air and vacuum changing the temperature of the PG disc, and the disc changes its height as to be −1.49 and 1.55 µm/°C in air and vacuum, respectively. Differential thermal analysis of polystyrene is demonstrated. Combining Schwarz–Christoffel transformation, magnetic field reconstruction method, and Maxwell stress tensor method, the calculation model of cogging torque of a dual‐stator axial flux permanent magnet machine is established. The end effect and slotting effect are both been taken into account. The results are verified by finite element method. And with the proposed method, calculation time can be significantly reduced compared with finite element method. Due to high power density, favorable permanent magnet cooling capability, and essentially sinusoidal electromotive‐force (EMF) waveform, the flux‐switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine has aroused wide interest around the world. In this article, to obtain a better topology of the FSPM machine, three FSPM machines, namely 12/10 C‐shaped core, 12/10 E‐shaped core, and 24/10 E‐shaped core FSPM machines, are investigated and compared. First, based on magnetic field modulation theory, the air‐gap modulation magnetic fields as well as their harmonic distribution of the three FSPM machines are modeled and investigated based on magnetic field modulation theory. Then, the optimal rotor tooth widths of the three FSPM machines are determined by finite element analysis. Finally, under the same conditions such as main dimensions, current density, and slot full ratio, the main performances including cogging torque, back‐EMF, output torque, overload capacity, and loss of the above three FSPM machines are predicted and compared, resulting in that the 12/10 E‐shaped core FSPM machine is capable of the best performance under rated condition. Partial deep saturation of magnetic circuit is common in short‐term working permanent magnet (PM) machines in aviation, aerospace, new energy power generation and other fields. In order to accurately calculate the electromagnetic characteristics of the short‐term working machine, a novel mesh‐based equivalent magnetic network for the deep saturation region is proposed. Firstly, the deep saturation mechanism of the magnetic circuit of short‐term working motor is analyzed, and the deep saturation region is determined; Secondly, a Pointy topped hexagonal segmentation approach (PT‐HSA) grid generation method is proposed to effectively simulate complex magnetic flux paths. The PT‐HSA grid division and node compilation rules were analyzed in detail. In addition, a nonlinear magnetic network model based on reluctance grid model and equivalent magnetic circuit model is established. Compared with the quadrilateral segmentation approach (QSA) model, the calculation results of PT‐HSA model are closer to the finite element simulation results in the loading and instantaneous compensation conditions. Multi‐degree‐of‐freedom (multi‐DOF) spherical actuators have been developed for the fields of robotics and industrial machineries. We have proposed an outer rotor type three‐DOF spherical actuator that can realize a high torque density. Each coil input current is calculated using a torque generating equation based on the torque constant matrix. The permanent magnet type actuators have a problem with generating unexpected cogging torque due to various manufacturing errors. Manufacturing errors mainly mean differences between the ideal dimensions at the motor design stage and the actual dimensions in mass production. In this case, the actuator would exceed the limitations of classical proportional‐integral‐differential (PID) controllers. Therefore, we propose a current compensator using reinforcement learning by introducing a deep neural network that is expected to improve the robustness of spherical actuators. This current compensator was applied to uncertainty problems such as manufacturing fluctuations of cogging torque. We examined the reward, which is the main parameter of deep reinforcement learning, and reduced the control error compared to classical PID controller and simple neural network (NN) controller. © 2022 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Compared with the traditional single stator permanent magnet (PM) direct‐drive motor, the direct‐drive PM motor with inner enhance force (IEF‐DDPMM) has the advantages of high‐torque density, strong heavy‐load starting ability and flexible operation mode, so it is especially suitable for the occasions such as mine winches with a wide load range, frequent heavy‐load starting, light‐load operation, and limited use environment space. It is very important to check the temperature rise of IEF‐DDPMM according to its different operating conditions, including transient temperature rise during heavy‐load starting and steady‐state temperature rise during rated operation, so as to optimize the electromagnetic and thermal performance at the same time. Based on the bi‐directional coupling method (BDCM) of the electromagnetic field and temperature field, the thermal analysis of IEF‐DDPMM and the transient temperature field analysis of the inner motor as a torque motor for short‐term operation are carried out, and then the rated power of inner motor in S1 working system and the maximum operation time of output peak power are determined. The fluid–solid coupling analysis method is used to optimize the design of the cooling system, and the influence of the number of water channels and inlet water velocity on the heat dissipation effect of the motor is analyzed. A cooling system with strong heat dissipation ability is obtained, which can achieve higher power or torque output within the temperature range of winding insulation or demagnetization limitation of PM. Finally, a prototype is developed and equipped with a temperature rise experimental platform, and the experimental results provided a good verification of the simulation results. © 2021 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Reliability is an important performance for permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) exploited to industrial applications and electric‐energy vehicles. Both air‐eccentricity and inter‐turn short circuit (ITSC) could induce the machine running in unbalanced status. Once not restored timely, the fault will lead to the whole drive system and its application damage. To enhance the reliability for PMSM, an effective fault diagnosis and classification method is necessary in advance. For this purpose, an improved exponential discriminant analysis (IEDA) algorithm is proposed and optimized. Further, the distortion characteristics of phase current signals with air‐eccentricity and ITSC are extracted and trained by the IEDA, which are applied for diagnosing whether the motor healthy or faulty and distinguishing fault types. Besides, the IEDA can not only identify fault type accurately but also estimate the fault degree precisely. Finally, compared to other common learning methods, several simulations and practical tests accompanying with diverse operating status are implemented, and their results can prove the proposed method has more accuracy and robustness than other methods. © 2020 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Permanent Magnet (PM) motors have been attracting great attention in recent technology because of providing higher efficiency as well as power/volume as compared to conventional wound‐rotor type machines. Recently, it has been demonstrated that NdFeB magnets, which are one of the expensive magnets, can be replaced by Alnico magnets in the case of Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) without any performance degradation. However, the performance of this machine has not been analyzed so far under a proper torque control strategy. The main objective of this work is to investigate the performance of DITC‐controlled PM‐SRM under various conditions. The possible demagnetization effect of the Alnico magnets on motor performance has also been considered. Compared to same size SRM, 3% efficiency increase has been obtained at rated operation.
