The life history of the leopard coralgrouper Plectropomus leopardus was examined for the purpose of stock evaluation and to help maintain populations in the Okinawa Islands, southwestern Japan. Age was estimated from cut and burnt otoliths, and gonads were observed histologically to reveal the growth, spawning period and relationships between age and both sexual development and sexual maturation for P. leopardus in waters north of Okinawa Island. The three parameters in the von Bertalanffy growth equation, L∞, k, and t0, were estimated at 61.2 cm fork length, 0.289, and 0.41, respectively. The oldest individual obtained among the specimens was 18.8 years. The spawning period started in May and lasted until July. During this period, 50 % of females reached maturity at 43.3 cm fork length and at 5 years of age. Due to the sexual transition from female to male, the sex ratio decreased to 50 % at 59.8 cm fork length and at 10.3 years of age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The interstices of coral rubble provide a good refuge for cryptic small crustaceans and molluscs, which are important prey items for reef fishes. In this study, we focused on the assemblage composition of cryptic mobile species along the depth gradient at an outer reef slope. Traps with coral rubble (22 × 18 × 6 cm) were set at three sites at different depths, and mobile animals that colonized the traps were sorted. In total, 117 species of larger animals (mainly Decapoda and Gastropoda) were recorded: 71 species at the 3 m point, 53 species at the 11 m point, and 37 species at the 22 m point. On average, 260.3 individuals were captured in the traps at 3 m, while 95.3 and 57.8 individuals were captured at 11 and 22 m, respectively. MDS ordination showed that assemblage composition differed among the three sites. The most abundant species at the 3 m was the galathean crab Galathea mauritiana, followed by the gastropod Diala albugo. At 11 and 22 m, the galathean crab Sadayoshia edwardsii was most abundant. Thus, at the reef slope, the benthic assemblage was most diverse at the shallow site, and specific communities occurred at the three sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Goto station of the Japan Sea-Farming Association conducted marine ranching experiments with striped jack Pseudocaranx dentex from 1988 to 1999 in the Goto Islands, Nagasaki, Japan. Marine ranching is a stocking method where released fish are fed for some period after release in order to decrease initial mortality from starvation. Ranched fish were fed for 0, 90, and 15 days after stocking in 1997, 1998, and 1999, respectively. During the experiment, herons (grey heron Ardea cinerea, black-crowned night heron Nycticorax nycticorax, and great egret Egretta alba) were often observed preying on released fish in the ranching area. The present study estimated the number of fish preyed upon by herons during observation periods in 1997, 1998, and 1999 from the number of herons that flew into the ranching area and the predation rate on ranched fish by herons. The former was counted during sightings. The latter was estimated from the sighting observations and heron regurgitations. The number of herons that flew into the ranching area increased with the feeding period. Acoustic survey and a geographic information system (GIS) were used conjointly to estimate the significance of bottom substrate to explain fish abundance distribution in the complex topography context of a marine hill. The survey was conducted in the Hachirigase hill, off south-western Honshu Island in the Sea of Japan. Analysis of acoustic data focused on a 10-m thick layer beginning at the bottom, assuming that bottom influence does not exceed this distance. Area backscattering strength ( S a) values were rescaled in order to reflect real differences before being analyzed. Results show that the influence of the different parameters taken into account (bottom depth, bottom substrate and water temperature) varies widely from one place to another. Bottom substrate is above all important in the zone located to the west of the peak. The kriging and stratification methods were applied to the S a distribution for estimating the total S a in the hill. Differences between results are discussed. The length frequencies of adult Pacific bluefin tuna Thunnus orientalis caught near Japan, near Taiwan, in the tropical western Pacific Ocean, and in the South Pacific Ocean, were compared. The largest catches consisted of medium-sized adults (160–209 cm fork length) taken near Japan and large adults (≥210 cm) taken near Taiwan. Small adults (120–159 cm) were occasionally caught in the Sea of Japan. Small numbers of medium-sized and large adults were caught in the tropical western Pacific and the South Pacific. The length frequencies of the fish greater than 160 cm in length caught in different areas around Japan were similar to each other. Age and growth of the yellowstriped butterfish,Labracoglossa argentiventris, around Izu Oshima Island were studied using a total of 1450 fish. Age was determined by counting the edge of the opaque zones as a ring mark on sectioned sagittal otoliths. Formation of the first ring was observed during spring or summer, corresponding to 1.5 years after hatching. Thereafter, one ring was formed each year in the same season as the previous year. The growth of the butterfish was rapid until 2 years of age. The maximum likelihood method was applied to the age and length data for estimating parameters in von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and Logistic growth models. The blackspot snapperLutjanus fulviflammusis one of the most commonLutjanusspecies landed and consumed on Okinawa Island, Japan. Using 901 fish (29.9–304.2 mm in standard length; SL) obtained from fish markets or caught by angling, the age, growth, maturation size and maturation age were estimated. Each opaque zone formed on the otolith every year correlated with their spawning and was thought to be an annual ring. The main spawning season was estimated to be from April to July, which peaked in May and June, with a few mature fish collected in August and September. Maximum ages were observed as 24 years for both sexes and L∞ (mm SL), K and t0 (years) of the von Bertalanffy growth formula were estimated to be 276, 0.144 and−5.22 for females and 247, 0.227 and−3.18 for males, respectively. First maturation size and age were estimated to be 175 mm SL and 2 years for both sexes. A faster growth rate up to 2 years will allow reproduction at a young age and provide many chances for spawning throughout their long life. The twoStaphylococcusstrains that had been isolated from fish sauce mush (moromi) made from frigate mackerel in Japan and proved to improve fish sauce odor, were examined for their taxonomic positions. The sequence analysis based on 16S rRNA andrpoBshowed that the two strains, R4Nu and R5G, had an identical sequence with sequence identities of 99.5% and 99.0% to the above two genes from the closest species ofS. nepalensis, respectively. A DNA hybridization test of the two strains showed more than 80% DNA similarity withS. nepalensis, thus confirming the above-mentioned species identification. Polymerase chain reaction primers specific to the strain isolated from fish sauce mush were designed fromrpoBand examined for the distribution of this species to various fish sauces made in Asian countries as well as to fish sauce starter (malt) made from soy beans and barley in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. The amplified DNA fragment bearing theS. nepalensisgene was detected in the enriched culture of the malt, although no positive reaction was shown with fish sauce samples. Effects of hypoxia on the principal prey and growth of flathead flounder Hippoglossoides dubius were studied in Funka Bay. Of the three dominant year-classes that occurred in recent years, the 1995 year-class was small in total length at age ≥ 3 and low in condition factor at age ≥ 2. Ophiuroids (almost Ophiura sarsi), which were the dominant prey in the 1980s, were of little importance and instead, crustaceans such as mysids, natant decapods and pelagic amphipods, bivalves and fish were important prey items for H. dubius in 2000–2001. In addition, the feeding intensity of H. dubius in 2000–2001 was lower than that in the 1980s. These facts are closely related to a reduction of prey abundance, particularly ophiuroids. It seems that the hypoxia that occurred in the central part of the bay during the summer and autumn of 1995–1997 caused the poor food supply and low growth rate at ages 2–4 of the 1995 year-class. Life history parameters (growth pattern, the length of the spawningseason and age at sexual maturity) of Apogon lineatus wereinvestigated from three localities in Japan. The maximum ages werefound to be 3 years in Tokyo Bay, 2 years in Osaka Bay and 5 yearsoff Niigata Prefecture. Both sexes from Tokyo Bay grew to largersizes between the ages of 1 and 2 years than both sexes from otherlocalities, food availability being suggested as the major factorfor differences in growth. Spawning seasons were during 4 months(July–October) in Tokyo Bay and Osaka Bay, but were foundto only occur during the two months of July and August off NiigataPrefecture. Factors that could limit the spawning season off NiigataPrefecture were not determined. Age at maturity for both sexes inall localities appeared to be 1 year. We could not elucidate whetherthese variations in life history parameters arose from genetic differencesor from phenotypic plasticity. In either case, the trade-off betweenthe maximum age and the length of the spawning season in the offNiigata Prefecture population and any other population may be interpretedas an adaptation to local conditions, such as with the off NiigataPrefecture population. The article presents a study, which offers a genome analysis of viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) isolated from Japanese flounder in Japan. In a recent study, VHSV were classified into four genotypes and two subgroups with nucleoprotein (N) gene using phylogenetic analysis. In this study however, the authors determined the complete coding sequences of the VHSV genome isolated from Japan.
