As one of the most widely used spread spectrum techniques, the frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) has been widely adopted in both civilian and military secure communications. In this technique, the carrier frequency of the signal hops pseudo-randomly over a large range, compared to the baseband. To capture an FHSS signal, conventional non-cooperative receivers without knowledge of the carrier have to operate at a high sampling rate covering the entire FHSS hopping range, according to the Nyquist sampling theorem. In this paper, we propose an adaptive compressed method for joint carrier and direction of arrival (DOA) estimations of FHSS signals, enabling subsequent non-cooperative processing. The compressed measurement kernels (i.e., non-zero entries in the sensing matrix) have been adaptively designed based on the posterior knowledge of the signal and task-specific information optimization. Moreover, a deep neural network has been designed to ensure the efficiency of the measurement kernel design process. Finally, the signal carrier and DOA are estimated based on the measurement data. Through simulations, the performance of the adaptively designed measurement kernels is proved to be improved over the random measurement kernels. Finding the most interesting areas of an image is the aim of saliency detection. Conventional methods based on low-level features rely on biological cues like texture and color. These methods, however, have trouble with processing complicated or low-contrast images. In this paper, we introduce a deep neural network-based saliency detection method. First, using semantic segmentation, we construct a pixel-level model that gives each pixel a saliency value depending on its semantic category. Next, we create a region feature model by combining both hand-crafted and deep features, which extracts and fuses the local and global information of each superpixel region. Third, we combine the results from the previous two steps, along with the over-segmented superpixel images and the original images, to construct a multi-level feature model. We feed the model into a deep convolutional network, which generates the final saliency map by learning to integrate the macro and micro information based on the pixels and superpixels. We assess our method on five benchmark datasets and contrast it against 14 state-of-the-art saliency detection algorithms. According to the experimental results, our method performs better than the other methods in terms of F-measure, precision, recall, and runtime. Learning in neural networks with locally-tuned neuron models such as radial Basis Function (RBF) networks is often seen as instable, in particular when multi-layered architectures are used. Furthermore, universal approximation theorems for single-layered RBF networks are very well established; therefore, deeper architectures are theoretically not required. Consequently, RBFs are mostly used in a single-layered manner. However, deep neural networks have proven their effectiveness on many different tasks. In this paper, we show that deeper RBF architectures with multiple radial basis function layers can be designed together with efficient learning schemes. We introduce an initialization scheme for deep RBF networks based on k-means clustering and covariance estimation. We further show how to make use of convolutions to speed up the calculation of the Mahalanobis distance in a partially connected way, which is similar to the convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Finally, we evaluate our approach on image classification as well as speech emotion recognition tasks. Recent studies on watermarking techniques based on image carriers have demonstrated new approaches that combine adversarial perturbations against steganalysis with embedding distortions. However, while these methods successfully counter convolutional neural network-based steganalysis, they do not adequately protect the data of the carrier itself. Recognizing the high sensitivity of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to small perturbations, we propose HAG-NET, a method based on image carriers, which is jointly trained by the encoder, decoder, and attacker. In this paper, the encoder generates Adversarial Steganographic Examples (ASEs) that are adversarial to the target classification network, thereby providing protection for the carrier data. Additionally, the decoder can recover secret data from ASEs. The experimental results demonstrate that ASEs produced by HAG-NET achieve an average success rate of over 99% on both the MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets. ASEs generated with the attacker exhibit greater robustness in terms of attack ability, with an average increase of about 3.32%. Furthermore, our method, when compared with other generative stego examples under similar perturbation strength, contains significantly more information according to image information entropy measurements. Deep neural networks excel in supervised learning tasks but are constrained by the need for extensive labeled data. Self-supervised learning emerges as a promising alternative, allowing models to learn without explicit labels. Information theory has shaped deep neural networks, particularly the information bottleneck principle. This principle optimizes the trade-off between compression and preserving relevant information, providing a foundation for efficient network design in supervised contexts. However, its precise role and adaptation in self-supervised learning remain unclear. In this work, we scrutinize various self-supervised learning approaches from an information-theoretic perspective, introducing a unified framework that encapsulates the self-supervised information-theoretic learning problem. This framework includes multiple encoders and decoders, suggesting that all existing work on self-supervised learning can be seen as specific instances. We aim to unify these approaches to understand their underlying principles better and address the main challenge: many works present different frameworks with differing theories that may seem contradictory. By weaving existing research into a cohesive narrative, we delve into contemporary self-supervised methodologies, spotlight potential research areas, and highlight inherent challenges. Moreover, we discuss how to estimate information-theoretic quantities and their associated empirical problems. Overall, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the intersection of information theory, self-supervised learning, and deep neural networks, aiming for a better understanding through our proposed unified approach. Due to the success observed in deep neural networks with contrastive learning, there has been a notable surge in research interest in graph contrastive learning, primarily attributed to its superior performance in graphs with limited labeled data. Within contrastive learning, the selection of a "view" dictates the information captured by the representation, thereby influencing the model's performance. However, assessing the quality of information in these views poses challenges, and determining what constitutes a good view remains unclear. This paper addresses this issue by establishing the definition of a good view through the application of graph information bottleneck and structural entropy theories. Based on theoretical insights, we introduce CtrlGCL, a novel method for achieving a beneficial view in graph contrastive learning through coding tree representation learning. Extensive experiments were conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of the proposed view in unsupervised and semi-supervised learning. In particular, our approach, via CtrlGCL-H, yields an average accuracy enhancement of 1.06% under unsupervised learning when compared to GCL. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are recurrent models that can leverage sparsity in input time series to efficiently carry out tasks such as classification. Additional efficiency gains can be obtained if decisions are taken as early as possible as a function of the complexity of the input time series. The decision on when to stop inference and produce a decision must rely on an estimate of the current accuracy of the decision. Prior work demonstrated the use of conformal prediction (CP) as a principled way to quantify uncertainty and support adaptive-latency decisions in SNNs. In this paper, we propose to enhance the uncertainty quantification capabilities of SNNs by implementing ensemble models for the purpose of improving the reliability of stopping decisions. Intuitively, an ensemble of multiple models can decide when to stop more reliably by selecting times at which most models agree that the current accuracy level is sufficient. The proposed method relies on different forms of information pooling from ensemble models and offers theoretical reliability guarantees. We specifically show that variational inference-based ensembles with p-variable pooling significantly reduce the average latency of state-of-the-art methods while maintaining reliability guarantees. Adversarial examples present a severe threat to deep neural networks' application in safetycritical domains such as autonomous driving. Although there are numerous defensive solutions, they all have some flaws, such as the fact that they can only defend against adversarial attacks with a limited range of adversarial intensities. Therefore, there is a need for a detection method that can distinguish the adversarial intensity in a fine-grained manner so that subsequent tasks can perform different defense processing against perturbations of various intensities. Based on thefact that adversarial attack samples of different intensities are significantly different in the highfrequency region, this paper proposes a method to amplify the high-frequency component of the image and input it into the deep neural network based on the residual block structure. To our best knowledge, the proposed method is the first to classify adversarial intensities at a fine-grained level, thus providing an attack detection component for a general AI firewall. Experimental results show that our proposed method not only has advanced performance in AutoAttack detection by perturbation intensity classification, but also can effectively apply to detect examples of unseen adversarial attack methods. The frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technique is widely used in secure communications. In this technique, the signal carrier frequency hops over a large band. The conventional non-compressed receiver must sample the signal at high rates to catch the entire frequency-hopping range, which is unfeasible for wide frequency-hopping ranges. In this paper, we propose an efficient adaptive compressed method to measure and detect the FHSS signals non-cooperatively. In contrast to the literature, the FHSS signal-detection method proposed in this paper is achieved directly with compressed sampling rates. The measurement kernels (the non-zero coefficients in the measurement matrix) are designed adaptively, using continuously updated knowledge from the compressed measurement. More importantly, in contrast to the iterative optimizations of the measurement matrices in the literature, the deep neural networks are trained once using task-specific information optimization and repeatedly implemented for measurement kernel design, enabling efficient adaptive detection of the FHSS signals. Simulations show that the proposed method provides stably low missing detection rates, compared to the compressed detection with random measurement kernels and the recently proposed method. We present a novel information-theoretic framework, termed as TURBO, designed to systematically analyse and generalise auto-encoding methods. We start by examining the principles of information bottleneck and bottleneck-based networks in the auto-encoding setting and identifying their inherent limitations, which become more prominent for data with multiple relevant, physics-related representations. The TURBO framework is then introduced, providing a comprehensive derivation of its core concept consisting of the maximisation of mutual information between various data representations expressed in two directions reflecting the information flows. We illustrate that numerous prevalent neural network models are encompassed within this framework. The paper underscores the insufficiency of the information bottleneck concept in elucidating all such models, thereby establishing TURBO as a preferable theoretical reference. Deep neural networks have made great achievements in remote sensing image analyses; however, previous studies have shown that deep neural networks exhibit incredible vulnerability to adversarial examples, which raises concerns about regional safety and production safety. In this paper, we propose an adversarial denoising method based on latent representation guidance for remote sensing image scene classification. In the training phase, we train a variational autoencoder to reconstruct the data using only the clean dataset. At test time, we first calculate the normalized mutual information between the reconstructed image using the variational autoencoder and the reference image as denoised by a discrete cosine transform. The reconstructed image is selectively utilized according to the result of the image quality assessment. Then, the latent representation of the current image is iteratively updated according to the reconstruction loss so as to gradually eliminate the influence of adversarial noise. Because the training of the denoiser only involves clean data, the proposed method is more robust against unknown adversarial noise. Experimental results on the scene classification dataset show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Deep neural networks have been successfully applied in the field of image recognition and object detection, and the recognition results are close to or even superior to those from human beings. A deep neural network takes the activation function as the basic unit. It is inferior to the spiking neural network, which takes the spiking neuron model as the basic unit in the aspect of biological interpretability. The spiking neural network is considered as the third-generation artificial neural network, which is event-driven and has low power consumption. It modulates the process of nerve cells from receiving a stimulus to firing spikes. However, it is difficult to train spiking neural network directly due to the non-differentiable spiking neurons. In particular, it is impossible to train a spiking neural network using the back-propagation algorithm directly. Therefore, the application scenarios of spiking neural network are not as extensive as deep neural network, and a spiking neural network is mostly used in simple image classification tasks. This paper proposed a spiking neural network method for the field of object detection based on medical images using the method of converting a deep neural network to spiking neural network. The detection framework relies on the YOLO structure and uses the feature pyramid structure to obtain the multi-scale features of the image. By fusing the high resolution of low-level features and the strong semantic information of high-level features, the detection precision of the network is improved. The proposed method is applied to detect the location and classification of breast lesions with ultrasound and X-ray datasets, and the results are 90.67% and 92.81%, respectively. In image classification with Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs), the number of parameters in pointwise convolutions rapidly grows due to the multiplication of the number of filters by the number of input channels that come from the previous layer. Existing studies demonstrated that a subnetwork can replace pointwise convolutional layers with significantly fewer parameters and fewer floating-point computations, while maintaining the learning capacity. In this paper, we propose an improved scheme for reducing the complexity of pointwise convolutions in DCNNs for image classification based on interleaved grouped filters without divisibility constraints. The proposed scheme utilizes grouped pointwise convolutions, in which each group processes a fraction of the input channels. It requires a number of channels per group as a hyperparameter C h . The subnetwork of the proposed scheme contains two consecutive convolutional layers K and L, connected by an interleaving layer in the middle, and summed at the end. The number of groups of filters and filters per group for layers K and L is determined by exact divisions of the original number of input channels and filters by C h . If the divisions were not exact, the original layer could not be substituted. In this paper, we refine the previous algorithm so that input channels are replicated and groups can have different numbers of filters to cope with non exact divisibility situations. Thus, the proposed scheme further reduces the number of floating-point computations (11%) and trainable parameters (10%) achieved by the previous method. We tested our optimization on an EfficientNet-B0 as a baseline architecture and made classification tests on the CIFAR-10, Colorectal Cancer Histology, and Malaria datasets. For each dataset, our optimization achieves a saving of 76%, 89%, and 91% of the number of trainable parameters of EfficientNet-B0, while keeping its test classification accuracy. Attention mechanisms can improve the performance of neural networks, but the recent attention networks bring a greater computational overhead while improving network performance. How to maintain model performance while reducing complexity is a hot research topic. In this paper, a lightweight Mixture Attention (MA) module is proposed to improve network performance and reduce the complexity of the model. Firstly, the MA module uses multi-branch architecture to process the input feature map in order to extract the multi-scale feature information of the input image. Secondly, in order to reduce the number of parameters, each branch uses group convolution independently, and the feature maps extracted by different branches are fused along the channel dimension. Finally, the fused feature maps are processed using the channel attention module to extract statistical information on the channels. The proposed method is efficient yet effective, e.g., the network parameters and computational cost are reduced by 9.86% and 7.83%, respectively, and the Top-1 performance is improved by 1.99% compared with ResNet50. Experimental results on common-used benchmarks, including CIFAR-10 for classification and PASCAL-VOC for object detection, demonstrate that the proposed MA outperforms the current SOTA methods significantly by achieving higher accuracy while having lower model complexity. A recommender system (RS) is highly efficient in extracting valuable information from a deluge of big data. The key issue of implementing an RS lies in uncovering users' latent preferences on different items. Latent Feature Analysis (LFA) and deep neural networks (DNNs) are two of the most popular and successful approaches to addressing this issue. However, both the LFA-based and the DNNs-based models have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Consequently, relying solely on either the LFA or DNN-based models cannot ensure optimal recommendation performance across diverse real-world application scenarios. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel hybrid recommendation model that combines Autoencoder and LFA techniques, termed AutoLFA. The main idea of AutoLFA is two-fold: (1) It leverages an Autoencoder and an LFA model separately to construct two distinct recommendation models, each residing in a unique metric representation space with its own set of strengths; and (2) it integrates the Autoencoder and LFA model using a customized self-adaptive weighting strategy, thereby capitalizing on the merits of both approaches. To evaluate the proposed AutoLFA model, extensive experiments on five real recommendation datasets are conducted. With the development of Internet technology, short texts have gradually become the main medium for people to obtain information and communicate. Short text reduces the threshold of information production and reading by virtue of its short length, which is in line with the trend of fragmented reading in the context of the current fast-paced life. In addition, short texts contain emojis to make the communication immersive. However, short-text content means it contains relatively little information, which is not conducive to the analysis of sentiment characteristics. Therefore, this paper proposes a sentiment classification method based on the blending of emoticons and short-text content. Emoticons and short-text content are transformed into vectors, and the corresponding word vector and emoticon vector are connected into a sentencing matrix in turn. The sentence matrix is input into a convolution neural network classification model for classification. A new trend in deep learning, represented by Mutual Information Neural Estimation (MINE) and Information Noise Contrast Estimation (InfoNCE), is emerging. In this trend, similarity functions and Estimated Mutual Information (EMI) are used as learning and objective functions. Coincidentally, EMI is essentially the same as Semantic Mutual Information (SeMI) proposed by the author 30 years ago. This paper first reviews the evolutionary histories of semantic information measures and learning functions. Then, it briefly introduces the author's semantic information G theory with the rate-fidelity function R(G) (G denotes SeMI, and R(G) extends R(D)) and its applications to multi-label learning, the maximum Mutual Information (MI) classification, and mixture models. Then it discusses how we should understand the relationship between SeMI and Shannon's MI, two generalized entropies (fuzzy entropy and coverage entropy), Autoencoders, Gibbs distributions, and partition functions from the perspective of the R(G) function or the G theory. An important conclusion is that mixture models and Restricted Boltzmann Machines converge because SeMI is maximized, and Shannon's MI is minimized, making information efficiency G/R close to 1. A potential opportunity is to simplify deep learning by using Gaussian channel mixture models for pre-training deep neural networks' latent layers without considering gradients. It also discusses how the SeMI measure is used as the reward function (reflecting purposiveness) for reinforcement learning. The G theory helps interpret deep learning but is far from enough. A major issue in the application of deep learning is the definition of a proper architecture for the learning machine at hand, in such a way that the model is neither excessively large (which results in overfitting the training data) nor too small (which limits the learning and modeling capabilities of the automatic learner). Facing this issue boosted the development of algorithms for automatically growing and pruning the architectures as part of the learning process. The paper introduces a novel approach to growing the architecture of deep neural networks, called downward-growing neural network (DGNN). The approach can be applied to arbitrary feed-forward deep neural networks. Groups of neurons that negatively affect the performance of the network are selected and grown with the aim of improving the learning and generalization capabilities of the resulting machine. The growing process is realized via replacement of these groups of neurons with sub-networks that are trained relying on ad hoc target propagation techniques. In so doing, the growth process takes place simultaneously in both the depth and width of the DGNN architecture. We assess empirically the effectiveness of the DGNN on several UCI datasets, where the DGNN significantly improves the average accuracy over a range of established deep neural network approaches and over two popular growing algorithms, namely, the AdaNet and the cascade correlation neural network. With the remarkable development of deep learning in the field of science, deep neural networks provide a new way to solve the Stefan problem. In this paper, deep neural networks combined with small sample learning and a general deep learning framework are proposed to solve the two-dimensional Stefan problem. In the case of adding less sample data, the model can be modified and the prediction accuracy can be improved. In addition, by solving the forward and inverse problems of the two-dimensional single-phase Stefan problem, it is verified that the improved method can accurately predict the solutions of the partial differential equations of the moving boundary and the dynamic interface. Natural-language processing is well positioned to help stakeholders study the dynamics of ambiguous Climate Change-related (CC) information. Recently, deep neural networks have achieved good results on a variety of NLP tasks depending on high-quality training data and complex and exquisite frameworks. This raises two dilemmas: (1) the networks are highly reliant on powerful hardware devices and processing is time-consuming, which is not only inconducive to execution on edge devices but also leads to resource consumption. (2) Obtaining large-scale effective annotated data is difficult and laborious, especially when it comes to a special domain such as CC. In this paper, we propose a CC-domain-adapted BERT distillation and reinforcement ensemble (DARE) model for tackling the problems above. Specifically, we propose a novel data-augmentation strategy which is a Generator-Reinforced Selector collaboration network for countering the dilemma of CC-related data scarcity. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms baselines with a maximum of 26.83% on SoTA and 50.65× inference time speed-up. As a promising information theory, reinforcement learning has gained much attention. This paper researches a wind-storage cooperative decision-making strategy based on dueling double deep Q-network (D3QN). Firstly, a new wind-storage cooperative model is proposed. Besides wind farms, energy storage systems, and external power grids, demand response loads are also considered, including residential price response loads and thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs). Then, a novel wind-storage cooperative decision-making mechanism is proposed, which combines the direct control of TCLs with the indirect control of residential price response loads. In addition, a kind of deep reinforcement learning algorithm called D3QN is utilized to solve the wind-storage cooperative decision-making problem. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive imaging modality used for estimating the conductivity of an object Ω from boundary electrode measurements. In recent years, researchers achieved substantial progress in analytical and numerical methods for the EIT inverse problem. Despite the success, numerical instability is still a major hurdle due to many factors, including the discretization error of the problem. Furthermore, most algorithms with good performance are relatively time consuming and do not allow real-time applications. In our approach, the goal is to separate the unknown conductivity into two regions, namely the region of homogeneous background conductivity and the region of non-homogeneous conductivity. Therefore, we pose and solve the problem of shape reconstruction using machine learning. We propose a novel and simple jet intriguing neural network architecture capable of solving the EIT inverse problem. It addresses previous difficulties, including instability, and is easily adaptable to other ill-posed coefficient inverse problems. That is, the proposed model estimates the probability for a point of whether the conductivity belongs to the background region or to the non-homogeneous region on the continuous space R d ∩ Ω with d ∈ { 2 , 3 } . The proposed model does not make assumptions about the forward model and allows for solving the inverse problem in real time. The proposed machine learning approach for shape reconstruction is also used to improve gradient-based methods for estimating the unknown conductivity. In this paper, we propose a piece-wise constant reconstruction method that is novel in the inverse problem setting but inspired by recent approaches from the 3D vision community. We also extend this method into a novel constrained reconstruction method. We present extensive numerical experiments to show the performance of the architecture and compare the proposed method with previous analytic algorithms, mainly the monotonicity-based shape reconstruction algorithm and iteratively regularized Gauss–Newton method. Adversarial example generation techniques for neural network models have exploded in recent years. In the adversarial attack scheme for image recognition models, it is challenging to achieve a high attack success rate with very few pixel modifications. To address this issue, this paper proposes an adversarial example generation method based on adaptive parameter adjustable differential evolution. The method realizes the dynamic adjustment of the algorithm performance by adjusting the control parameters and operation strategies of the adaptive differential evolution algorithm, while searching for the optimal perturbation. Finally, the method generates adversarial examples with a high success rate, modifying just a very few pixels. The attack effectiveness of the method is confirmed in CIFAR10 and MNIST datasets. The experimental results show that our method has a greater attack success rate than the One Pixel Attack based on the conventional differential evolution. Machine learning (ML) has achieved remarkable success in a wide range of applications. In recent ML research, deep anomaly detection (AD) has been a hot topic with the aim of discriminating among anomalous data with deep neural networks (DNNs). Notably, image AD is one of the most representative tasks in current deep AD research. ML's interaction with quantum computing is giving rise to a heated topic named quantum machine learning (QML), which enjoys great prospects according to recent academic research. This paper attempts to address the image AD problem in a deep manner with a novel QML solution. Specifically, we design a quantum-classical hybrid DNN (QHDNN) that aims to learn directly from normal raw images to train a normality model and then exclude images that do not conform to this model as anomalies during its inference. To enable the QHDNN to perform satisfactorily in deep image AD, we explore multiple quantum layer architectures and design a VQC-based QHDNN solution. Extensive experiments were conducted on commonly used benchmarks to test the proposed QML solution, whose results demonstrate the feasibility of addressing deep image AD with QML. Importantly, the experimental results show that our quantum-classical hybrid solution can even yield superior performance to that of its classical counterpart when they share the same number of learnable parameters. This paper presents a method for the transparent, robust, and highly capacitive watermarking of video signals using an information mapper. The proposed architecture is based on the use of deep neural networks to embed the watermark in the luminance channel in the YUV color space. An information mapper was used to enable the transformation of a multi-bit binary signature of varying capacitance reflecting the entropy measure of the system into a watermark embedded in the signal frame. To confirm the effectiveness of the method, tests were carried out for video frames with a resolution of 256 × 256 pixels, with a watermark capacity of 4 to 16,384 bits. The intelligent monitoring of tool wear status and wear prediction are important factors affecting the intelligent development of the modern machinery industry. Many scholars have used deep learning methods to achieve certain results in tool wear prediction. However, due to the instability and variability of the signal data, some neural network models may have gradient decay between layers. Most methods mainly focus on feature selection of the input data but ignore the influence degree of different features to tool wear. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a dual-stage attention model for tool wear prediction. A CNN-BiGRU-attention network model is designed, which introduces the self-attention to extract deep features and embody more important features. The IndyLSTM is used to construct a stable network to solve the gradient decay problem between layers. Moreover, the attention mechanism is added to the network to obtain the important information of output sequence, which can improve the accuracy of the prediction. Experimental study is carried out for tool wear prediction in a dry milling operation to demonstrate the viability of this method. Through the experimental comparison and analysis with regression prediction evaluation indexes, it proves the proposed method can effectively characterize the degree of tool wear, reduce the prediction errors, and achieve good prediction results. Hierarchical stochastic processes, such as the hierarchical Dirichlet process, hold an important position as a modelling tool in statistical machine learning, and are even used in deep neural networks. They allow, for instance, networks of probability vectors to be used in general statistical modelling, intrinsically supporting information sharing through the network. This paper presents a general theory of hierarchical stochastic processes and illustrates its use on the gamma process and the generalised gamma process. In general, most of the convenient properties of hierarchical Dirichlet processes extend to the broader family. The main construction for this corresponds to estimating the moments of an infinitely divisible distribution based on its cumulants. Various equivalences and relationships can then be applied to networks of hierarchical processes. Most plant viral infections are vector-borne. There is a latent period of disease inside the vector after obtaining the virus from the infected plant. Thus, after interacting with an infected vector, the plant demonstrates an incubation time before becoming diseased. This paper analyzes a mathematical model for persistent vector-borne viral plant disease dynamics. The backpropagated neural network based on the Levenberg—Marquardt algorithm (NN-BLMA) is used to study approximate solutions for fluctuations in natural plant mortality and vector mortality rates. A state-of-the-art numerical technique is utilized to generate reference data for obtaining surrogate solutions for multiple cases through NN-BLMA. Curve fitting, regression analysis, error histograms, and convergence analysis are used to assess accuracy of the calculated solutions. In this work, we formulate the image in-painting as a matrix completion problem. Traditional matrix completion methods are generally based on linear models, assuming that the matrix is low rank. When the original matrix is large scale and the observed elements are few, they will easily lead to over-fitting and their performance will also decrease significantly. Recently, researchers have tried to apply deep learning and nonlinear techniques to solve matrix completion. However, most of the existing deep learning-based methods restore each column or row of the matrix independently, which loses the global structure information of the matrix and therefore does not achieve the expected results in the image in-painting. In this paper, we propose a deep matrix factorization completion network (DMFCNet) for image in-painting by combining deep learning and a traditional matrix completion model. The main idea of DMFCNet is to map iterative updates of variables from a traditional matrix completion model into a fixed depth neural network. The potential relationships between observed matrix data are learned in a trainable end-to-end manner, which leads to a high-performance and easy-to-deploy nonlinear solution. The goal of software defect prediction is to make predictions by mining the historical data using models. Current software defect prediction models mainly focus on the code features of software modules. However, they ignore the connection between software modules. This paper proposed a software defect prediction framework based on graph neural network from a complex network perspective. Firstly, we consider the software as a graph, where nodes represent the classes, and edges represent the dependencies between the classes. Then, we divide the graph into multiple subgraphs using the community detection algorithm. Thirdly, the representation vectors of the nodes are learned through the improved graph neural network model. Lastly, we use the representation vector of node to classify the software defects. The proposed model is tested on the PROMISE dataset, using two graph convolution methods, based on the spectral domain and spatial domain in the graph neural network. The investigation indicated that both convolution methods showed an improvement in various metrics, such as accuracy, F-measure, and MCC (Matthews correlation coefficient) by 86.6%, 85.8%, and 73.5%, and 87.5%, 85.9%, and 75.5%, respectively. In this paper, we study the learnability of the Boolean inner product by a systematic simulation study. The family of the Boolean inner product function is known to be representable by neural networks of threshold neurons of depth 3 with only 2 n + 1 units (n the input dimension)—whereas an exact representation by a depth 2 network cannot possibly be of polynomial size. This result can be seen as a strong argument for deep neural network architectures. In our study, we found that this depth 3 architecture of the Boolean inner product is difficult to train, much harder than the depth 2 network, at least for the small input size scenarios n ≤ 16 . Nonetheless, the accuracy of the deep architecture increased with the dimension of the input space to 94% on average, which means that multiple restarts are needed to find the compact depth 3 architecture. Replacing the fully connected first layer by a partially connected layer (a kind of convolutional layer sparsely connected with weight sharing) can significantly improve the learning performance up to 99% accuracy in simulations. Another way to improve the learnability of the compact depth 3 representation of the inner product could be achieved by adding just a few additional units into the first hidden layer. In this paper, a grid-free deep learning method based on a physics-informed neural network is proposed for solving coupled Stokes–Darcy equations with Bever–Joseph–Saffman interface conditions. This method has the advantage of avoiding grid generation and can greatly reduce the amount of computation when solving complex problems. Although original physical neural network algorithms have been used to solve many differential equations, we find that the direct use of physical neural networks to solve coupled Stokes–Darcy equations does not provide accurate solutions in some cases, such as rigid terms due to small parameters and interface discontinuity problems. In order to improve the approximation ability of a physics-informed neural network, we propose a loss-function-weighted function strategy, a parallel network structure strategy, and a local adaptive activation function strategy. In addition, the physical information neural network with an added strategy provides inspiration for solving other more complicated problems of multi-physical field coupling. In this paper, we propose to leverage the Bayesian uncertainty information encoded in parameter distributions to inform the learning procedure for Bayesian models. We derive a first principle stochastic differential equation for the training dynamics of the mean and uncertainty parameter in the variational distributions. On the basis of the derived Bayesian stochastic differential equation, we apply the methodology of stochastic optimal control on the variational parameters to obtain individually controlled learning rates. We show that the resulting optimizer, StochControlSGD, is significantly more robust to large learning rates and can adaptively and individually control the learning rates of the variational parameters. Many web platforms now include recommender systems. Network representation learning has been a successful approach for building these efficient recommender systems. However, learning the mutual influence of nodes in the network is challenging. Indeed, it carries collaborative signals accounting for complex user-item interactions on user decisions. Peer-to-peer lending (P2P lending) has proliferated in recent years thanks to Fintech and big data advancements. However, P2P lending platforms are not tightly governed by relevant laws yet, as their development speed has far exceeded that of regulations. Therefore, P2P lending operations are still subject to risks. This paper proposes prediction models to mitigate the risks of default and asymmetric information on P2P lending platforms. Specifically, we designed sophisticated procedures to pre-process mass data extracted from Lending Club in 2018 Q3–2019 Q2. After that, three statistical models, namely, Logistic Regression, Bayesian Classifier, and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and five AI models, namely, Decision Tree, Random Forest, LightGBM, Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), were utilized for data analysis. The loan statuses of Lending Club's customers were rationally classified. To evaluate the models, we adopted the confusion matrix series of metrics, AUC-ROC curve, Kolmogorov–Smirnov chart (KS), and Student's t-test. Empirical studies show that LightGBM produces the best performance and is 2.91% more accurate than the other models, resulting in a revenue improvement of nearly USD 24 million for Lending Club. The paper deals with the methods of handling imperfect information and the control of mobile robots acting under uncertainty. It is assumed that the robots act in autonomous regime and are controlled internally without referring the externally defined probabilities of the states and actions. To control the activity of the robots, we suggest the novel multi-valued logic techniques based on the recently developed measures, known as the subjective trusts. In addition to specification of the robots' movements, such a technique allows for direct definition of the robots' swarming using the methods of artificial neural networks with mobile neurons. The suggested methods are verified by numerical simulations and running examples. In this paper, a recompression S-CO2 Brayton cycle model that considers the finite-temperature difference heat transfer between the heat source and the working fluid, irreversible compression, expansion, and other irreversibility is established. First, the ecological function is analyzed. Then the mass flow rate, pressure ratio, diversion coefficient, and the heat conductance distribution ratios (HCDRs) of four heat exchangers (HEXs) are chosen as variables to optimize cycle performance, and the problem of long optimization time is solved by building a neural network prediction model. The results show that when the mass flow rate is small, the pressure ratio, the HCDRs of heater, and high temperature regenerator are the main influencing factors of the ecological function; when the mass flow rate is large, the influences of the re-compressor, the HCDRs of low temperature regenerator, and cooler on the ecological function increase; reasonable adjustment of the HCDRs of four HEXs can make the cycle performance better, but mass flow rate plays a more important role; the ecological function can be increased by 12.13%, 31.52%, 52.2%, 93.26%, and 96.99% compared with the initial design point after one-, two-, three-, four- and five-time optimizations, respectively. When computers started to become a dominant part of technology around the 1950s, fundamental questions about reliable designs and robustness were of great relevance. Their development gave rise to the exploration of new questions, such as what made brains reliable (since neurons can die) and how computers could get inspiration from neural systems. In parallel, the first artificial neural networks came to life. Since then, the comparative view between brains and computers has been developed in new, sometimes unexpected directions. With the rise of deep learning and the development of connectomics, an evolutionary look at how both hardware and neural complexity have evolved or designed is required. In this paper, we argue that important similarities have resulted both from convergent evolution (the inevitable outcome of architectural constraints) and inspiration of hardware and software principles guided by toy pictures of neurobiology. Moreover, dissimilarities and gaps originate from the lack of major innovations that have paved the way to biological computing (including brains) that are completely absent within the artificial domain. As it occurs within synthetic biocomputation, we can also ask whether alternative minds can emerge from A.I. designs. Financial and economic time series forecasting has never been an easy task due to its sensibility to political, economic and social factors. For this reason, people who invest in financial markets and currency exchange are usually looking for robust models that can ensure them to maximize their profile and minimize their losses as much as possible. Fortunately, recently, various studies have speculated that a special type of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) called Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) could improve the predictive accuracy of the behavior of the financial data over time. This paper aims to forecast: (i) the closing price of eight stock market indexes; and (ii) the closing price of six currency exchange rates related to the USD, using the RNNs model and its variants: the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). The results show that the GRU gives the overall best results, especially for the univariate out-of-sample forecasting for the currency exchange rates and multivariate out-of-sample forecasting for the stock market indexes. The spiking neural network (SNN) is regarded as a promising candidate to deal with the great challenges presented by current machine learning techniques, including the high energy consumption induced by deep neural networks. However, there is still a great gap between SNNs and the online meta-learning performance of artificial neural networks. Importantly, existing spike-based online meta-learning models do not target the robust learning based on spatio-temporal dynamics and superior machine learning theory. In this invited article, we propose a novel spike-based framework with minimum error entropy, called MeMEE, using the entropy theory to establish the gradient-based online meta-learning scheme in a recurrent SNN architecture. We examine the performance based on various types of tasks, including autonomous navigation and the working memory test. The experimental results show that the proposed MeMEE model can effectively improve the accuracy and the robustness of the spike-based meta-learning performance. More importantly, the proposed MeMEE model emphasizes the application of the modern information theoretic learning approach on the state-of-the-art spike-based learning algorithms. Therefore, in this invited paper, we provide new perspectives for further integration of advanced information theory in machine learning to improve the learning performance of SNNs, which could be of great merit to applied developments with spike-based neuromorphic systems. Recently, flow models parameterized by neural networks have been used to design efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) transition kernels. However, inefficient utilization of gradient information of the target distribution or the use of volume-preserving flows limits their performance in sampling from multi-modal target distributions. In this paper, we treat the training procedure of the parameterized transition kernels in a different manner and exploit a novel scheme to train MCMC transition kernels. We divide the training process of transition kernels into the exploration stage and training stage, which can make full use of the gradient information of the target distribution and the expressive power of deep neural networks. The transition kernels are constructed with non-volume-preserving flows and trained in an adversarial form. The proposed method achieves significant improvement in effective sample size and mixes quickly to the target distribution. Empirical results validate that the proposed method is able to achieve low autocorrelation of samples and fast convergence rates, and outperforms other state-of-the-art parameterized transition kernels in varieties of challenging analytically described distributions and real world datasets. Medical image fusion (MIF) has received painstaking attention due to its diverse medical applications in response to accurately diagnosing clinical images. Numerous MIF methods have been proposed to date, but the fused image suffers from poor contrast, non-uniform illumination, noise presence, and improper fusion strategies, resulting in an inadequate sparse representation of significant features. This paper proposes the morphological preprocessing method to address the non-uniform illumination and noise by the bottom-hat–top-hat strategy. Then, grey-principal component analysis (grey-PCA) is used to transform RGB images into gray images that can preserve detailed features. After that, the local shift-invariant shearlet transform (LSIST) method decomposes the images into the low-pass (LP) and high-pass (HP) sub-bands, efficiently restoring all significant characteristics in various scales and directions. The HP sub-bands are fed to two branches of the Siamese convolutional neural network (CNN) by process of feature detection, initial segmentation, and consistency verification to effectively capture smooth edges, and textures. While the LP sub-bands are fused by employing local energy fusion using the averaging and selection mode to restore the energy information. The proposed method is validated by subjective and objective quality assessments. The subjective evaluation is conducted by a user case study in which twelve field specialists verified the superiority of the proposed method based on precise details, image contrast, noise in the fused image, and no loss of information. The supremacy of the proposed method is further justified by obtaining 0.6836 to 0.8794, 0.5234 to 0.6710, and 3.8501 to 8.7937 gain for Q F AB , CRR, and AG and noise reduction from 0.3397 to 0.1209 over other methods for objective parameters. While collecting training data, even with the manual verification of experts from crowdsourcing platforms, eliminating incorrect annotations (noisy labels) completely is difficult and expensive. In dealing with datasets that contain noisy labels, over-parameterized deep neural networks (DNNs) tend to overfit, leading to poor generalization and classification performance. As a result, noisy label learning (NLL) has received significant attention in recent years. Existing research shows that although DNNs eventually fit all training data, they first prioritize fitting clean samples, then gradually overfit to noisy samples. Mainstream methods utilize this characteristic to divide training data but face two issues: class imbalance in the segmented data subsets and the optimization conflict between unsupervised contrastive representation learning and supervised learning. To address these issues, we propose a Balanced Partitioning and Training framework with Pseudo-Label Relaxed contrastive loss called BPT-PLR, which includes two crucial processes: a balanced partitioning process with a two-dimensional Gaussian mixture model (BP-GMM) and a semi-supervised oversampling training process with a pseudo-label relaxed contrastive loss (SSO-PLR). The former utilizes both semantic feature information and model prediction results to identify noisy labels, introducing a balancing strategy to maintain class balance in the divided subsets as much as possible. The latter adopts the latest pseudo-label relaxed contrastive loss to replace unsupervised contrastive loss, reducing optimization conflicts between semi-supervised and unsupervised contrastive losses to improve performance. We validate the effectiveness of BPT-PLR on four benchmark datasets in the NLL field: CIFAR-10/100, Animal-10N, and Clothing1M. Neural networks have been extensively applied to a variety of tasks, achieving astounding results. Applying neural networks in the scientific field is an important research direction that is gaining increasing attention. In scientific applications, the scale of neural networks is generally moderate size, mainly to ensure the speed of inference during application. Additionally, comparing neural networks to traditional algorithms in scientific applications is inevitable. These applications often require rapid computations, making the reduction in neural network sizes increasingly important. Existing work has found that the powerful capabilities of neural networks are primarily due to their nonlinearity. Theoretical work has discovered that under strong nonlinearity, neurons in the same layer tend to behave similarly, a phenomenon known as condensation. Condensation offers an opportunity to reduce the scale of neural networks to a smaller subnetwork with a similar performance. In this article, we propose a condensation reduction method to verify the feasibility of this idea in practical problems, thereby validating existing theories. Our reduction method can currently be applied to both fully connected networks and convolutional networks, achieving positive results. In complex combustion acceleration tasks, we reduced the size of the neural network to 41.7% of its original scale while maintaining prediction accuracy. In the CIFAR10 image classification task, we reduced the network size to 11.5% of the original scale, still maintaining a satisfactory validation accuracy. Cross-entropy loss is crucial in training many deep neural networks. In this context, we show a number of novel and strong correlations among various related divergence functions. In particular, we demonstrate that, in some circumstances, (a) cross-entropy is almost perfectly correlated with the little-known triangular divergence, and (b) cross-entropy is strongly correlated with the Euclidean distance over the logits from which the softmax is derived. The consequences of these observations are as follows. First, triangular divergence may be used as a cheaper alternative to cross-entropy. Second, logits can be used as features in a Euclidean space which is strongly synergistic with the classification process. This justifies the use of Euclidean distance over logits as a measure of similarity, in cases where the network is trained using softmax and cross-entropy. In this paper, the performance of artificial neural networks in option pricing was analyzed and compared with the results obtained from the Black–Scholes–Merton model, based on the historical volatility. The results were compared based on various error metrics calculated separately between three moneyness ratios. The market data-driven approach was taken to train and test the neural network on the real-world options data from 2009 to 2019, quoted on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The artificial neural network did not provide more accurate option prices, even though its hyperparameters were properly tuned. The Black–Scholes–Merton model turned out to be more precise and robust to various market conditions. In addition, the bias of the forecasts obtained from the neural network differed significantly between moneyness states. Uncovering the mechanisms behind long-term memory is one of the most fascinating open problems in neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Artificial associative memory networks have been used to formalize important aspects of biological memory. Generative diffusion models are a type of generative machine learning techniques that have shown great performance in many tasks. Similar to associative memory systems, these networks define a dynamical system that converges to a set of target states. In this work, we show that generative diffusion models can be interpreted as energy-based models and that, when trained on discrete patterns, their energy function is (asymptotically) identical to that of modern Hopfield networks. This equivalence allows us to interpret the supervised training of diffusion models as a synaptic learning process that encodes the associative dynamics of a modern Hopfield network in the weight structure of a deep neural network. Leveraging this connection, we formulate a generalized framework for understanding the formation of long-term memory, where creative generation and memory recall can be seen as parts of a unified continuum. Multi-focus image fusion is an important method used to combine the focused parts from source multi-focus images into a single full-focus image. Currently, to address the problem of multi-focus image fusion, the key is on how to accurately detect the focus regions, especially when the source images captured by cameras produce anisotropic blur and unregistration. This paper proposes a new multi-focus image fusion method based on the multi-scale decomposition of complementary information. Firstly, this method uses two groups of large-scale and small-scale decomposition schemes that are structurally complementary, to perform two-scale double-layer singular value decomposition of the image separately and obtain low-frequency and high-frequency components. Then, the low-frequency components are fused by a rule that integrates image local energy with edge energy. The high-frequency components are fused by the parameter-adaptive pulse-coupled neural network model (PA-PCNN), and according to the feature information contained in each decomposition layer of the high-frequency components, different detailed features are selected as the external stimulus input of the PA-PCNN. Finally, according to the two-scale decomposition of the source image that is structure complementary, and the fusion of high and low frequency components, two initial decision maps with complementary information are obtained. By refining the initial decision graph, the final fusion decision map is obtained to complete the image fusion. In addition, the proposed method is compared with 10 state-of-the-art approaches to verify its effectiveness. The experimental results show that the proposed method can more accurately distinguish the focused and non-focused areas in the case of image pre-registration and unregistration, and the subjective and objective evaluation indicators are slightly better than those of the existing methods.
