With the rapid development of renewable energy and the increasing maturity of energy storage technology, microgrids are quickly becoming popular worldwide. The stochastic scheduling problem of microgrids can increase operational costs and resource wastage. In order to reduce operational costs and optimize resource utilization efficiency, the real-time scheduling of microgrids becomes particularly important. After collecting extensive data, reinforcement learning (RL) can provide good strategies. However, it cannot make quick and rational decisions in different environments. As a method with generalization ability, meta-learning can compensate for this deficiency. Therefore, this paper introduces a microgrid scheduling strategy based on RL and meta-learning. This method can quickly adapt to different environments with a small amount of training data, enabling rapid energy scheduling policy generation in the early stages of microgrid operation. This paper first establishes a microgrid model, including components such as energy storage, load, and distributed generation (DG). Then, we use a meta-reinforcement learning framework to train the initial scheduling strategy, considering the various operational constraints of the microgrid. The experimental results show that the MAML-based RL strategy has advantages in improving energy utilization and reducing operational costs in the early stages of microgrid operation. Due to a rising share of renewable energy sources on the production side and electrification of transport and heating on the consumption side, the efficient management of flexibility in distribution networks is crucial for ensuring optimal operation and utilization of resources. Nowadays, the sensitivity-based approach is mainly used in medium-voltage (MV) networks for regulating voltage profiles with reactive power of distributed energy resources (DER). The main disadvantage of the simplified sensitivity-based method is its inaccuracy in case of a high deviation of the network voltage from the nominal values. Furthermore, it was also noted that despite the fact that the method is well described in the literature, there is a lack of systematic approach to its implementation in real-life applications. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to address this disadvantage and to propose an algorithm designed to calculate required consumer flexibility in near real-time to ensure distribution grid operation within operational criteria. In the first part of the paper, network state, including line loading and node voltages, is assessed to determine distribution network node capacity. By analyzing the sensitivity of network busbars to changes in consumption and production, our algorithm effectively identifies the most efficient nodes and facilitates strategic decision-making for resource allocation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through simulations of real-world distribution network data, highlighting its ability to enhance network flexibility and improve resource utilization. Leveraging sensitivity coefficients, the algorithm enables flexible consumption and production management across various scenarios, supporting the transition to a more dynamic and efficient power system. A new passivity-based voltage tracker for islanded Direct Current (DC) microgrids is presented in this paper. The proposed design develops a new sufficient condition for passivity-based state feedback with proportional and integral control using the attracting ellipsoid method. In this paper, we consider the time behavior of the extended vector, which completely describes the principle properties of the closed-loop system such as the boundedness of the trajectories within some ellipsoid and the dependence of its "size" on the feedback gains. The next step, which we are realizing in this paper, is the minimization of the attractive ellipsoid by selecting the "best" admissible feedback parameters. Here, it is important to note that the applied feedback is of PD-type (proportional differential) on the system state and I-type (integral) on the output. This is a new construction of the suggested feedback which gives several advantages for a designer. The suggested control is decentralized and uses only the local states; it is cost-effective and avoids the time delays in the communication networks which are needed if centralized control is used. The suggested control is carried out in the bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) framework. Extensive simulation is performed on a test system composed of renewable energy sources, under plug and play (PnP) operations, and uncertainties in distribution lines and loads. The performance of the proposed decentralized voltage controller is compared with that of a voltage tracker present in the literature. The comparison shows the improvements introduced by the proposed control ensure the stability of the dc bus voltage and a quick response under different scenarios of operating conditions. Over the past few decades, many universities have turned to using microgrid systems because of their dependability, security, flexibility, and less reliance on the primary grid. Microgrids on campuses face challenges in the instability of power production due to meteorological conditions, as the output of renewable sources such as solar and wind power relies entirely on the weather and determining the optimal size of microgrids. Therefore, this paper comprehensively reviews the university campuses' microgrids. Some renewable energy sources, such as geothermal (GE), wind turbine (WT), and photovoltaic (PV), are compared in terms of installation costs, availability, weather conditions, efficiency, environmental impact, and maintenance. Furthermore, a description of microgrid systems and their components, including distributed generation (DG), energy storage system (ESS), and microgrid load, is presented. As a result, the most common optimization models for analyzing the performance of campus microgrids are discussed. Hybrid microgrid system configurations are introduced and compared to find the optimal configuration in terms of energy production and flexibility. Grid-forming inverters (GFMs) have emerged as crucial components in modern power systems, facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources and enhancing grid stability. In recent years, the development of hydrogen energy has been widely discussed, particularly in combination with renewable energy sources, enabling the production of "green" hydrogen. With the significant increase in wind power generation, a promising solution for obtaining green hydrogen is the development of wind-to-hydrogen (W2H) systems. However, the high proportion of wind power and electrolyzers in a large-scale W2H system will bring about the problem of renewable energy consumption and frequency stability reduction. This paper analyzes the operational characteristics and economic feasibility of mainstream electrolyzers, leading to the proposal of a coordinated hydrogen production scheme involving both a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer and an alkaline (ALK) electrolyzer. Subsequently, a coordinated control based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) is proposed for system frequency regulation in a large-scale W2H islanded microgrid. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the system under PEM/ALK electrolyzers coordinated control not only flexibly accommodates fluctuating wind power but also maintains frequency stability in the face of large disturbances. Compared with the traditional system with all ALK electrolyzers, the frequency deviation of this system is reduced by 25%, the regulation time is shortened by 80%, and the demand for an energy storage system (ESS) is reduced. As offline control photovoltaic (PV) plants are not equipped with online communication and remote control systems, they cannot adjust their power in real-time. Therefore, in a distribution network saturated with offline control PVs, the distribution system operator (DSO) should schedule the distributed energy resources (DERs) considering the uncertainty of renewable energy to prevent curtailment due to overvoltage. This paper presents a day-ahead network operation strategy using a mobile energy storage system (MESS) and offline control PVs to minimize power curtailment. The MESS model efficiently considers the transportation time and power loss of the MESS, and models various operating modes, such as the charging, discharging, idle, and moving modes. The optimization problem is formulated based on mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) considering the spatial and temporal operation constraints of MESSs and is performed using chanced constrained optimal power flow (CC-OPF). The upper limits for offline control PVs are set based on the probabilistic approach, thus mitigating overvoltage due to forecasting errors. The proposed operation strategy was tested in the IEEE 33-node distribution system coupled with a 15-node transportation system. With large-scale grid-connected renewable energy, new power systems require more flexible and reliable energy storage power sources. Pumped storage stations play an important role in peak shaving, valley filling, and promoting renewable energy consumption. This paper presents the reasonable energy-abandonment operation of a combined power generation system (CPGS), in which a pumped storage station is the core control power, with an ultra-high proportion of renewable energy. Firstly, based on the seasonal characteristics of wind, solar, and load demand, typical days are selected through improved clustering analysis algorithms. Then, a daily optimal scheduling model for combined power generation systems (CPGS) is developed with the goals of economy, low-carbon, and stable operation. Finally, the correlation between the energy-abandonment rate and pumped storage station peak shaving and system optimization operation indicators is obtained by a reasonable energy-abandonment calculation method considering source-grid-load coordination. Taking the operation data of an energy base in the western region of China as an example, when the penetration rate of renewable energy is 60–70% in the future, the operating cost on the power side is greatly affected by the construction of the source side. In the modern power grid, characterized by the increased penetration of power electronics and extensive utilization of renewable energy, inverter-based power plants play a pivotal role as the principal interface of renewable energy sources (RESs) and the grid. Considering the stability characteristics of grid-following (GFL) inverters when the grid is relatively weak, the application of grid-forming (GFM) controls becomes imperative in enhancing the stability of the entire power plant. Thus, there is an urgent need for suitable and effective models to study the interaction and stability of the paralleled inverters employing GFL and GFM controls. Thus, the small-signal modeling with full-order state-space model and eigenvalues analysis are presented in this paper. First, the small-signal state-space model of the individual GFL and GFM inverters is obtained, considering the control loop, interaction, reference frame, transmissions, and time delays. Then, the models of the individual inverter are extended to the hybrid inverters to study the effects of the GFM inverters on the small-signal stability of the entire system. And the impacts of the inertia and damping are analyzed by the eigenvalues of the state-transition matrix. A case comprising three parallel GFL inverters and two GFL inverters with one GFM inverter, respectively, are studied to examine the effectiveness and accuracy of the model. Currently, the global energy revolution in the direction of green and low-carbon technologies is flourishing. The large-scale integration of renewable energy into the grid has led to significant fluctuations in the net load of the power system. To meet the energy balance requirements of the power system, the pressure on conventional power generation units to adjust and regulate has increased. The efficient utilization of the regulation capability of controllable industrial loads and energy storage can achieve the similarity between renewable energy curves and load curves, thereby reducing the peak-to-valley difference and volatility of the net load. This approach also decreases the adjustment pressure on conventional generating units. Therefore, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization scheduling strategy considering the similarity between renewable energy and load, including energy storage and industrial load participation. The combination of the Euclidean distance, which measures the similarity between the magnitude of renewable energy–load curves, and the load tracking coefficient, which measures the similarity in curve shape, is used to measure the similarity between renewable energy and load profiles. This measurement method is introduced into the source-load-storage optimal scheduling to establish a two-stage optimization model. In the first stage, the model is set up to maximize the similarity between renewable energy and the load profile and minimize the cost of energy storage and industrial load regulation to obtain the desired load curve and new energy output curve. In the second stage, the model is set up to minimize the overall operation cost by considering the costs associated with abandoning the new energy sources and shedding loads to optimize the output of conventional generator sets. Through a case analysis, it is verified that the proposed scheduling strategy can achieve the tracking of the load curve to the new energy curve, reducing the peak-to-valley difference of the net load curve by 48.52% and the fluctuation by 67.54% compared to the original curve. These improvements effectively enhance the net load curve and reduce the difficulty in regulating conventional power generation units. Furthermore, the strategy achieves the full discard of renewable energy and reduces the system operating costs by 4.19%, effectively promoting the discard of renewable energy and reducing the system operating costs. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in integrating the smart grid concept into railway networks, which has been driven by the need to enhance energy efficiency and reduce air pollution in such energy-intensive systems. Consequently, experts have actively sought innovative solutions with which to tackle these challenges. One promising strategy involves integrating renewable energy sources (RESs), energy storage systems (ESSs), and electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) into current electric railway systems (ERSs). This study begins by examining the concept of implementing smart grids in railway systems through bibliometric analysis. It then delves into the realization of a hybrid railway microgrid (H-RMG) designed to enhance power flow capacities, improve energy efficiency, and address power quality issues in traditional AC railway networks. This paper introduces various future AC–DC-coupled hybrid railway microgrid (ADH-RMG) architectures centered around a shared DC bus acting as a DC hub for upgrading conventional AC railway systems utilizing interfacing static converters. Through an exploration of different possible ADH-RMG configurations, this research aims to offer valuable insights and a roadmap for the modernization and reconstruction of existing railway networks using smart grid technologies. This paper designs a multi-variable hybrid islanding-detection method (HIDM) using signal-processing techniques. The signals of current captured on a test system where the renewable energy (RE) penetration level is between 50% and 100% are processed by the application of the Stockwell transform (ST) to compute the Stockwell islanding-detection factor (SIDF) and the co-variance islanding-detection factor (CIDF). The signals of current are processed by the application of the Hilbert transform (HT), and the Hilbert islanding-detection factor (HIDF) is computed. The signals of current are also processed by the application of the Alienation Coefficient (ALC), and the Alienation Islanding Detection Factor (AIDF) is computed. A hybrid islanding-detection indicator (HIDI) is derived by multiplying the SIDF, CIDF, AIDF, and an islanding weight factor (IWF) element by element. Two thresholds, designated as the hybrid islanding-detection indicator threshold (HIDIT) and the hybrid islanding-detection indicator fault threshold (HIDIFT), are selected to detect events of islanding and also to discriminate such events from fault events and operational events. The HIDM is effectively tested using an IEEE-13 bus power network, where solar generation plants (SGPs) and wind generation plants (WGPs) are integrated. The HIDM effectively identified and discriminated against events such as islanding, faults, and operational. The HIDM is also effective at identifying islanding events on a real-time distribution feeder. The HIDM is also effective at detecting islanding events in the scenario of a 20 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It is established that the HIDM has a small non-detection zone (NDZ). The effectiveness of the HIDM is better relative to the islanding-detection method (IDM) supported by the discrete wavelet transform (DWT), an IDM using a hybridization of the slantlet transform, and the Ridgelet probabilistic neural network (RPNN). An IDM using wavelet transform multi-resolution (WT-MRA)-based image data and an IDM based on the use of a deep neural network (DNN) were used. Demand response (DR) can improve the accommodation of renewable energy and further affect the distributed generation (DG) allocation strategy. In this context, this paper proposes a stochastic optimal allocation model of DG, considering DR. Firstly, to address the uncertainty of wind and solar power outputs, a large number of scenarios of wind and solar power are generated based on the scenario method, which are then clustered into 10 typical scenarios by the k-means method. Secondly, with the goal of maximizing the total cost, the DR cost and corresponding constraints are introduced. Then, the stochastic planning model for DG is established, where the planning level aims to minimize the investment cost while the operation level minimizes the total operation expectation cost. For the non-linear term in the DR cost and power flow constraint, the Taylor expansion method and second-order conic relaxation method are both adopted to transform the original mixed-integer non-linear model to the mixed-integer second-order conic planning model. Finally, the whole planning model for DG is solved by CPLEX 12.6.0. The results show that DR can reduce the total cost and improve the accommodation of renewable energy in the DG planning process, which should be paid more attention to in the DG planning model. In this paper, an event-triggered distributed secondary control, along with an energy management algorithm, was developed to ensure the voltage stability and power management of a DC microgrid containing batteries and renewable energy sources, such as PV systems and wind turbines. The energy management algorithm, employing fuzzy logic control, governs power flow based on the generation status of sources and the charging rate of the battery. Consequently, the control algorithm shields the battery from overcharging and over-discharging situations, simultaneously ensuring energy quality within the microgrid. Sampled-data-based event-triggered control is integrated into the proposed distributed secondary control to alleviate communication burdens between controllers, effectively avoiding Zeno behavior. To demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed control algorithm, several experimental studies were conducted on a real DC microgrid prototype. The results obtained confirmed the controller's effectiveness. With the proposed control algorithm, autonomous control has been developed to ensure the safe and continuous operation of loads in island-mode microgrids, incorporating PV systems, wind turbines, and batteries, while also minimizing communication overhead. The integration of renewable energy sources is crucial for achieving sustainability and environmental preservation. However, their intermittent nature poses challenges to electrical system stability, requiring robust integration strategies. Microgrids emerge as a flexible solution, but their successful deployment requires meticulous planning and intelligent operation to overcome these challenges. This paper presents the development of a reduced-scale laboratory dedicated to researching both hardware and software solutions for intelligent microgrid management. The laboratory was designed to incorporate key components that are becoming increasingly important in the present microgrid context, including renewable energy generation, storage systems, electrolyzers for hydrogen production, and combined heat and power sources. While some equipment consists of commercial models, the battery bank, converter, and supervisory systems were custom-designed to meet the specific requirements of the laboratory. The laboratory has proven itself as a robust tool for conducting studies on microgrids, effectively incorporating essential components, addressing pertinent system issues, and allowing for several tests on converting control algorithms. Users ought to decide how to operate and manage power systems in order to achieve various goals. As a result, many strategies have been developed to aid in this regard. Optimal power flow management is one such strategy that assists users in properly operating and managing the supply and demand of power in an optimal way under specified constraints. However, in-depth research on optimal power flow management is yet to be explored when it comes to the supply and demand of power for the bulk of standalone renewable energy systems such as solar photovoltaics, especially when it comes to specific applications such as powering military soldier-level portable electronic devices. This paper presents an optimal power flow management modelling and optimisation approach for solar-powered soldier-level portable electronic devices. The OPTI toolbox in MATLAB is used to solve the formulated nonlinear optimal power flow management problem using SCIP as the solver. A globally optimal solution was arrived at in a case study in which the objective function was to minimise the difference between the power supplied to the portable electronic device electronics and the respective portable electronic device power demands. This ensured that the demand for solar-powered soldier-level portable electronic devices is met at all times in spite of the prohibitive case scenarios' circumstances under the given constraints. This resolute approach underscores the importance placed on satisfying the demand needs of the specific devices while navigating and addressing the limitations posed by the existing conditions or constraints. Soldiers and the solar photovoltaic user fraternity at large will benefit from this work as they will be guided on how to optimally manage their power systems' supply and demand scenarios. To ensure reliable power delivery to customers under potential disturbances, the coordination of a microgrid cluster (MGC) is essential. Various control strategies—centralized, decentralized, distributed, and hierarchical—have been explored in the literature to achieve this goal. The hierarchical control method, with three distinct levels, has proven effective in fostering coordination among microgrids (MGs) within the cluster. The third control level, utilizing a time-triggering consensus protocol, relies on a continuous and reliable communication network for data exchange among MGs, leading to resource-intensive operations and potential data congestion. Moreover, uncertainties introduced by renewable energy sources (RESs) can adversely impact cluster performance. In response to these challenges, this paper introduces a new distributed event-triggered consensus algorithm (DETC) to enhance the efficiency in handling the aforementioned issues. The proposed algorithm significantly reduces communication burdens, addressing resource usage concerns. The performance of this approach is evaluated through simulations of a cluster comprising four DC MGs, in each of which were PV and a hybrid Battery-Super capacitor in the MATLAB environment. The key findings indicate that the proposed DETC algorithm achieves commendable results in terms of voltage regulation, precise power sharing among sources, and a reduction in triggering instants. Based on these results, this method can be deemed as a good development in MGC management, providing a more efficient and reliable means of coordination, particularly in scenarios with dynamic loads and renewable energy integration. Optimal power flow (OPF) analysis enables the in-depth study and examination of islanded microgrid design and operation. The development of the analysis framework, including modeling, formulating, and selecting effective OPF solvers, however, is a nontrivial task. As a result, this paper presents a tutorial on an OPF modeling framework, offering a mathematical model that can be readily implemented using established open-source software tools such as OpenDSS, Pyomo, and IPOPT. The framework is versatile, capable of representing single-phase and unbalanced three-phase islanded microgrids. Various inverter models, such as those of grid forming and following equipped with their operating characteristics, can be incorporated.
