It covers a comprehensive analysis of various innovative strategies and optimization algorithms aimed at mitigating voltage fluctuations, optimizing network performance, and integrating smart technologies like smart inverters and energy storage systems (ESSs). The review highlights key developments in decentralized control algorithms, multi-objective optimization techniques, and the integration of advanced technologies such as soft open points (SOPs) to enhance grid stability and efficiency. The paper categorizes these strategies into two main types: analytical methods and computational methods. In supporting the stable operation of high-penetration renewable energy grids, flywheel energy storage systems undergo frequent charge–discharge cycles, resulting in significant stress fluctuations in the rotor core. This paper investigates the fatigue life of flywheel energy storage rotors fabricated from 30Cr2Ni4MoV alloy steel, attempting to elucidate the material's mechanical properties, crack propagation behavior, and impact of internal defects on fatigue life. Tensile tests reveal that the material exhibited high yield (992 MPa) and tensile strengths (1130 MPa). The Paris formula is used to model crack growth rates, ending in good agreement with the experimental data. Fatigue tests at various stress conditions highlight the material's significant variability in fatigue life and emphasize the need for reliable design approaches. This paper also demonstrates that internal defect size and location critically affect fatigue life, calling for improvements in forging inspection standards. The green port multi-energy microgrid, featuring renewable energy generation, hydrogen energy, and energy storage systems, is an important gateway to achieve the net-zero emission goal. But there are many forms of energy in green port multi-energy microgrid systems, the power fluctuates frequently, and the port loads with large fluctuations and fast changes. These factors can easily lead to the problem of the state of charge exceeding the limit of the energy storage system. To distribute the fluctuating power in the green port multi-energy microgrid system reasonably and maintain the state of charge (SOC) of the hybrid energy storage system in an moderate range, an energy management strategy (EMS) based on dual-stage fuzzy control with a low pass-filter algorithm is proposed in this paper. First, the mathematical model of a green port multi-energy microgrid system is established. Then, fuzzy rules are designed, and the dual-stage fuzzy controller is used to change the time constant of the low-pass filter (LPF) and modify the initial power distribution by an LPF algorithm. Finally, simulation models are built in Matlab 2016a/Simulink. The simulation results demonstrate that, compared with other algorithms under the control of the EMS proposed in this paper, the high-frequency component in the flywheel power is smaller, and the SOC of the supercapacitor is maintained in a reasonable range of 34–78%, which extends the lifespan of the flywheel and supercapacitor. Additionally, it has a faster automatic adjustment ability for the state of charge of the energy storage system, which is conducive to better maintaining the stable operation of green port multi-energy microgrid systems. Changes in weather conditions directly impact the output of wind power, photovoltaic systems, and other forms of uncontrollable power generation. During extreme weather events, the output from wind and photovoltaic sources is typically reduced. In light of this, this paper proposes a two-stage operational strategy for energy storage, under scenarios of extreme-heat-with-low-wind-speed, in power systems. Firstly, historical data on wind and solar power, along with weather characteristics, are collected to analyze the power output during multi-day periods of extreme heat and low wind speed. Then, Monte Carlo simulations are employed to generate multi-day load curves with inherent uncertainties, based on regional load characteristics of the power system. Finally, a two-stage operation strategy for energy storage charging and discharging is established. In the first stage, normal operations are conducted to identify periods of power shortage across various types of loads. In the second stage, based on the identified moments of power shortage from the first stage, charging and discharging constraints are applied to the energy storage systems. The feasibility and effectiveness of this two-stage operational strategy are then validated through simulations, using historical data to generate scenarios of multi-day extreme-heat-and-low-wind-speed conditions. The increasing use of renewable energy sources introduces significant fluctuations in power generation, demanding enhanced regulatory capabilities to maintain the balance between power supply and demand. To promote multi-energy coupling and the local consumption of renewable energy, integrated energy systems have become a focal point of multidisciplinary research. This study models adjustable sources, networks, and loads within electric–thermal integrated energy systems as energy storage entities, forming virtual energy storage systems to participate in the optimization and scheduling of integrated energy systems. This paper investigates the modeling and control strategies of virtual energy storage systems within electric–thermal integrated energy systems. Initially, it introduces the definition, logical architecture, and technical connotations of virtual energy storage. Next, it models temperature-controlled loads as virtual energy storage systems and compares them with traditional energy storage systems, analyzing their characteristic differences and summarizing virtual energy storage system modeling methods and characteristic indicators. This paper then focuses on the specific applications of virtual energy storage systems in four typical scenarios. Finally, it explores the future development directions of virtual energy storage. In isolated operation, DC microgrids require multiple distributed energy storage units (DESUs) to accommodate the variability of distributed generation (DG). The traditional control strategy has the problem of uneven allocation of load current when the line impedance is not matched. As the state-of-charge (SOC) balancing proceeds, the SOC difference gradually decreases, leading to a gradual decrease in the balancing rate. Thus, an improved SOC droop control strategy is introduced in this paper, which uses a combination of power and exponential functions to improve the virtual impedance responsiveness to SOC changes and introduces an adaptive acceleration factor to improve the slow SOC balancing problem. We construct a sparse communication network to achieve information exchange between DESU neighboring units. A global optimization controller employing the consistency algorithm is designed to mitigate the impact of line impedance mismatch on SOC balancing and current allocation. This approach uses a single controller to restore DC bus voltage, effectively reducing control connections and alleviating the communication burden on the system. Lastly, a simulation model of the DC microgrid is developed using MATLAB/Simulink R2021b. This paper addresses the growing challenges and developments in frequency control within power systems influenced by the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources. It evaluates the advancements and limitations of renewable-based control technologies and explores the critical role of diverse energy storage technologies in providing fast frequency response ancillary services. Through a comprehensive analysis of the global literature, this paper categorises energy storage solutions according to their efficacy in meeting fast frequency response demands and potential for revenue generation. It reveals significant gaps in the current research, which predominantly focuses on battery energy storage systems and microgrid applications, with insufficient attention to grid-scale storage solutions and innovative energy storage technologies. This analysis identifies a lack of detailed technical simulations and hybrid storage models for frequency control, as well as a minimal exploration of the environmental benefits, particularly in terms of carbon dioxide emission reductions, associated with deploying new energy storage technologies in ancillary service markets. The paper concludes by emphasising the urgent need for further research incorporating detailed techno-economic evaluations and the carbon dioxide reduction potential of modular, scalable energy storage technologies, which should be facilitated by advanced network simulation models and comprehensive market analysis to drive future advancements in the field. With the continuous improvement of wind power penetration in the power system, the volatility and unpredictability of wind power generation have increased the burden of system frequency regulation. With its flexible control mode and fast power adjustment speed, energy storage has obvious advantages in participating in power grid frequency regulation. Therefore, this paper studies the control strategy of wind energy storage combined with primary frequency regulation and proposes a control method of wind energy storage combined with primary frequency regulation based on the operation state of wind turbines. This paper analyzes the reserve power and rotor reserve kinetic energy of wind turbines operating in different wind speed ranges, introduces the fan frequency regulation operation state coefficient to quantify the real-time frequency regulation ability of the unit, regards the fan and energy storage system as independent frequency regulation sources, and designs the control strategy of joint frequency regulation of wind and storage in different wind speed ranges. The energy storage system is employed to participate in frequency control in the low-wind-speed range, thereby addressing the "blind spot" issue of wind turbine unit frequency control alone. In the medium- and high-wind-speed ranges, the real-time complementary output of wind and energy storage power is achieved by assigning weights based on the frequency control operation status coefficient. Finally, the effectiveness of the joint frequency modulation control strategy of wind storage in low-, medium-, and high-wind-speed regions is verified in the simulation model. In recent decades, Saudi Arabia has experienced a significant surge in energy consumption as a result of population growth and economic expansion. This has presented utility companies with the formidable challenge of upgrading their facilities and expanding their capacity to keep pace with future energy demands. In order to address this issue, there is an urgent need to implement energy-saving solutions such as energy storage systems (ESSs) and renewable energy sources, which can help to reduce demand during peak hours. To ensure optimal use of ESSs, it is crucial to integrate a load forecasting model with the ESS in order to control charging and discharging rates and schedules. The irregular load profile is a particularly significant consumer of energy, consuming approximately 2.5 GWh annually at the cost of USD 3 billion in Saudi Arabia. In light of this, this paper develops a load forecasting model for the irregular load profile with a high degree of accuracy: achieving 95%. One of the key applications of this model is load peak shaving. Given the region's abundance of solar irradiation, the paper propose an integration of a solar PV system with a battery energy storage system (BESS) and analyzes various scenarios to determine the efficacy of the proposed approach. The results demonstrate significant savings when the proposed forecasting model is integrated with a BESS and PV system, with the potential to reduce monthly imported power by more than 22% during the summer season. In the context of increasing energy demands and the integration of renewable energy sources, this review focuses on recent advancements in energy storage control strategies from 2016 to the present, evaluating both experimental and simulation studies at component, system, building, and district scales. Out of 426 papers screened, 147 were assessed for eligibility, with 56 included in the final review. As a first outcome, this work proposes a novel classification and taxonomy update for advanced storage control systems, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical implementation. Furthermore, the study emphasizes experimental case studies, moving beyond numerical analyses to provide practical insights. It investigates how the literature on energy storage is enhancing building flexibility and resilience, highlighting the application of advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence methods and their impact on energy and financial savings. By exploring the correlation between control algorithms and the resulting benefits, this review provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state and future perspectives of energy storage control in smart grids and buildings. With the growing adoption of battery energy storage systems in renewable energy sources, electric vehicles (EVs), and portable electronic devices, the effective management of battery systems has become increasingly critical. The advent of wireless battery management systems (wBMSs) represents a significant innovation in battery management technology. Traditional wired battery management systems (BMSs) face challenges, including complexity, increased weight, maintenance difficulties, and a higher chance of connection failure. In contrast, wBMSs offer a robust solution, eliminating physical connections. wBMSs offer enhanced flexibility, reduced packaging complexity, and improved reliability. Given that wBMSs are still in a preliminary stage, this review paper explores their evolution, current state, and future directions. A comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art wBMS technologies, including academic and commercial solutions, is elaborated in this paper. We compare wireless communication technologies like Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Zigbee, Near-Field Communication (NFC), Wi-Fi, and cellular networks in the context of wBMSs. We discuss their performance in terms of efficiency, reliability, scalability, and security. Despite its promising outlook, wBMSs still face challenges such as data security, signal interference, regulatory and standardization issues, and competition from the continued advancement of wired BMS technologies, making the advantages of wBMSs less evident. This paper concludes with guidelines for future research and development of wBMSs, aiming to address these challenges and pave the way for a broad adoption of wBMSs across various applications. The modern world is moving towards a zero-emission economy; therefore, various actions are being taken to reduce the share of fossil fuels in energy production. The article examines the potential for the continued expansion of photovoltaic farms, with a special emphasis on farms utilising east–west panel orientation. The east–west orientation is an innovative solution with many advantages over the traditional north–south arrangement. The paper also makes a detailed assessment of the photovoltaic farm environment by applying two analyses based on the following factors: Political, Economic, Social, and Technological (PEST) and Demographic, Economic, Environmental, Political, Legal, Informational, Social, and Technological (DEEPLIST) factors. This is followed by an insightful, comprehensive review of the most important factors that contribute to the efficiency of photovoltaic installations, namely site conditions, existing infrastructure, and ability to connect to the electricity grid. The paper also devotes space to an analysis of daily energy price changes that affect the economic efficiency of the installation and discusses the potential for energy storage in the context of photovoltaic farms. The development of photovoltaics also requires investing in energy storage. All discussed issues fall within the scope of photovoltaic farm development and optimal use of energy resources. The electrification of personal transportation holds great potential for lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing climate change. The promise of electric vehicles (EVs) to serve these goals has resulted in a broad range of supporting policies aimed at encouraging widespread EV adoption at both the state and federal levels in the United States and around the world. While the EV revolution and prospects of a world with ubiquitous EVs are impacting various industries and many aspects of daily life, strategic interactions between the power grid and EVs are crucial for a successful energy transition. However, managing the interplay between EVs and the power grid remains a challenge. Motivated by that tension, this paper surveys a variety of solutions, policies, and incentives that are focused on effectively managing EV charging behaviors. The paper's objective is to explore these tools to ensure that EV owners have ultimate control over their personal vehicles while simultaneously allowing the power grid to mitigate adverse network impacts. Furthermore, this paper examines the role of charging infrastructure technology and its strategic placement in facilitating the seamless integration of EVs into the grid. With the increasing use of renewable energy sources and decentralized power systems, certain challenges have emerged in meeting consumers' electrical energy demands. The intermittent nature of renewable energy generation means that it cannot always align with consumers' needs, resulting in periods of excess energy production when it is not required. To bridge this gap between production and consumption, energy storage systems are necessary. This paper defines the work of an isolated microgrid, which consists of renewable sources (wind and PV) for energy production, households with electric vehicles as consumers, and a combined storage system. This storage system is made from batteries, hydrogen storage, and a control system that defines the best use of the storage. Stored energy is utilized through fuel cells to generate electricity for consumption when renewable sources cannot meet the demand. This paper presents the principles of electrolysis and models of individual elements within such a system, as well as the definition and principle of control of the system functionality based on rules and conditions. The proposed control system aims to increase the energy storage lifecycle by deciding when and how to utilize which type of storage and define a self-sufficient microgrid based on renewable sources of production. An economic analysis of the storage part of the system was carried out in which the levelized cost of energy stored and the NPC of the storage systems are calculated. A simulation of the system's operation is conducted using one-hour measurements of wind turbines, solar panels, and household consumption in Serbia. A multi-port energy router (MER) is an important infrastructure for power management and energy storage after an unexpected power outage. In addition, MERs can relate to various emergency electric power sources (EEPSs) and power grids at the same time. Moreover, by putting an MER in mobile energy storage, an MER allows for more flexible energy management and regulation in urban cities. This paper proposes a new topology of MERs composed of a bidirectional AC/DC converter and a partial power processing-based triple active bridge (PPP-based TAB) converter to supply emergency power for an unexpected power outage. This design of an MER improves the power efficiency significantly to realize peer-to-peer (P2P) trading which realizes the bidirectional power transmission among the main power grid, EEPSs such as the battery of electric vehicles (EV), and clients' loads. The control methods of the power transmission of two power electronic converters in MER are also illustrated in this paper to realize the power transmission among the main power grid, clients' loads, and EEPSs. This allows any power source connected to the MER to be used as an input or output to receive or send out power, which greatly improves the utilization of power. With the rapid development of a social economy, the yearly increase in air conditioning load in the winter and summer seasons may bring serious challenges to the safe and economic operation of the power grid during the peak period of electricity consumption. So, how we reasonably adjust the set temperature of air conditioning so as to cut down the load during peak periods is very important. In this paper, considering the thermal inertia of air-conditioned buildings and the adaptability of human thermal comfort to temperature changes, the air conditioning load is regarded as virtual energy storage, the air conditioning temperature adjustment range for different users is determined based on the adaptive thermal comfort model of different geographic locations and climatic conditions, and a compensation mechanism is set up based on air conditioning users' level of participation. Then, an optimal scheduling strategy for a microgrid was constructed with the objectives of user satisfaction, carbon emissions, and microgrid operation benefits, as well as regulating the users' electricity consumption behavior, and the strategy was solved by using a multi-objective JAYA algorithm. Finally, winter and summer are used as case studies to analyze the results, which demonstrate that regulating the virtual energy storage of air conditioning can effectively improve the economy and environmental friendliness of a microgrid operation and reduce the cost of electricity consumption for the users, taking into account the comfort of the users. The kingdom is particularly focusing on harnessing solar power, given its abundant sunlight, and is also exploring wind energy, leveraging its vast desert landscapes. These efforts are part of Saudi Arabia's broader strategy to become a global leader in renewable energy. This paper provides a detailed exploration of Saudi Arabia's ambitious journey from a fossil-fuel-dominated energy sector to a more sustainable, renewable-energy-driven future. Anchored in the broader context of global energy trends, the study emphasizes the critical shift toward renewable resources, with a particular focus on Saudi Arabia's unique position in this global movement. Key to this transition is Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, a strategic framework that guides the country's renewable energy policies and initiatives. A comprehensive review of these policies, including other governmental and international collaborations that support renewable energy development, is offered. The current state of renewable energy in Saudi Arabia is assessed, including an overview of existing projects and production statistics. The paper also explores emerging technologies such as energy storage systems and smart grid solutions, emphasizing their role in Saudi Arabia's energy transition. In this paper, the notion of a cohesive and self-sufficient grid is proposed. Based on a cohesive and self-sufficient virtual microgrid, an active distribution network is optimally planned, and an optimal configuration of demand-side resources, distributed generations, and energy storage systems are generated. To cope with stochastic uncertainty from forecast error in wind speed and load, flexibility reserves are needed. In this paper, the supply relation between flexibility and uncertainty is quantified and integrated in an innovative index which is defined as cohesion. The optimization objectives are a minimized operational cost and system net-ability cohesion as well as self-sufficiency, which is defined as the abilities both to supply local load and to deal with potential uncertainty. After testing the optimal configuration in the PG&E 69 bus system, it is found that with a more cohesive VM partition, the self-sufficiency of VMs is also increased. In the context of China's new power system, various regions have implemented policies mandating the integration of new energy sources with energy storage, while also introducing subsidies to alleviate project cost pressures. Currently, there is a lack of subsidy analysis for photovoltaic energy storage integration projects. In order to systematically assess the economic viability of photovoltaic energy storage integration projects after considering energy storage subsidies, this paper reviews relevant policies in the Chinese photovoltaic energy storage market. It analyzes the cost and revenue composition of photovoltaic energy storage integration projects, and constructs a system dynamics model for the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of such projects. Taking a specific photovoltaic energy storage project as an example, this paper measures the levelized cost of electricity and the investment return rate under different energy storage scenarios. Combining energy storage allocation ratios and internal rate of return indicators, this paper analyzes the net present value of photovoltaic energy storage integration projects under different subsidy standards. The results indicate that, while the current energy storage subsidy policies positively stimulate photovoltaic energy storage integration projects, they exhibit a limited capacity to cover energy storage investment costs, thereby failing to incentivize capital market participation in the construction of such projects. Rational allocation of energy storage capacity and optimization of corresponding subsidy policies are crucial prerequisites for enhancing the economic viability and widespread adoption of photovoltaic energy storage integration projects. A lithium-ion battery–ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system (HESS) has been recognized as a viable solution to address the limitations of single battery energy sources in electric vehicles (EVs), especially in urban driving conditions, owing to its complementary energy features. However, an energy management strategy (EMS) is required for the optimal performance of the HESS. In this paper, an EMS based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) of the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is proposed. It aims to minimize battery current and power peak fluctuations, thereby enhancing its capacity and lifespan, by optimizing the weights of formulated FLC rules using the PSO algorithm. This paper utilizes the battery temperature as the cost function in the optimization problem of the PSO due to the sensitivity of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to operating temperature variations compared to ultracapacitors (UCs). An evaluation of optimized FLC using PSO and a developed EV model is conducted under the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule (UDDS) and compared with the unoptimized FLC. The result shows that 5.4% of the battery's capacity was conserved at 25.5 °C, which is the highest operating temperature attained under the proposed strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The potential energy of compressed air represents a multi-application source of power. Historically employed to drive certain manufacturing or transportation systems, it became a source of vehicle propulsion in the late 19th century. During the second half of the 20th century, significant efforts were directed towards harnessing pressurized air for the storage of electrical energy. Today's systems, which are based on storing the air at a high pressure, are usually recognized as compressed air energy storage (CAES) installations. This paper aims to provide an overview of different technologies that take advantage of the energy accumulated in the compressed air. Particular attention is paid to the CAES installations that are working as electrical energy storage systems (EESs). These systems, developed originally as large capacity (>100 MWe) and fuel-based installations, may soon become fully scalable, highly efficient, and fuel-free electrical energy storage systems. To present this opportunity, a thorough review encompassing previous and up-to-date advancements in their development was carried out. In particular, CAES concepts, such as diabatic (D-CAES), adiabatic (A-CAES), and isothermal (I-CAES), are described in detail. This review also provides the detailed characteristics of the crucial elements of these configurations, including compressors, expanders, air storage chambers, and thermal storage tanks. Knowledge of these components and their role allows us to understand the main challenges behind the further development of the mentioned CAES setups. Apart from the CAES systems that are designed as EES systems, this paper describes other prospective technologies that utilize the energy of pressurized air. Accordingly, compressed air cars and their key elements are explained in detail. Moreover, the technology renowned as wave-driven compressed air energy storage (W-CAES) is described as well, indicating that the utilization of pressurized air represents a viable option for converting ocean energy into electrical power. Regional Integrated Energy Systems (RIESs) and Shared Energy Storage Systems (SESSs) have significant advantages in improving energy utilization efficiency. However, establishing a coordinated optimization strategy between RIESs and SESSs is an urgent problem to be solved. This paper constructs an operational framework for RIESs considering the participation of SESSs. It analyzes the game relationships between various entities based on the dual role of energy storage stations as both energy consumers and suppliers, and it establishes optimization models for each stakeholder. Finally, the improved Differential Evolution Algorithm (JADE) combined with the Gurobi solver is employed on the MATLAB 2021a platform to solve the cases, verifying that the proposed strategy can enhance the investment willingness of energy storage developers, balance the interests among the Integrated Energy Operator (IEO), Energy Storage Operator (ESO) and the user, and improve the overall economic efficiency of RIESs. This paper presents measurements of the discharge cycle, in which energy stored in compressed air within a pressure vessel is hydro-pneumatically converted back into electricity via a Pelton turbine and fed into the national electricity grid. The tests were conducted using a hydraulic turbine operated under different fixed-turbine rotational speed settings, with the pressure being allowed to decrease gradually during the HPES system's discharge cycle. The system's overall efficiency accounted for flow losses, turbine inefficiencies, and electrical losses. The tests showed that this efficiency was practically independent of the compressed-air pressure of specific water turbine runner speeds, despite the water turbine operating at fixed speeds. A numerical model developed in MATLAB Simulink (R2022a) was also presented for use simulating the hydraulic performance of the system during the discharge cycle. The model used secondary loss coefficients for the hydraulic circuit and derived velocity coefficients from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for the Pelton turbine nozzle. Single-phase solid-state transformers (SSTs) have the advantages of a compact structure, higher reliability, and multiple functions, and have been widely studied. However, bulky energy storage elements and inherent ripple power with double-grid frequency issues are the main disadvantages of conventional single-phase SSTs. This paper presents a single-phase matrix-type AC-AC SST eliminating ripple power with double-grid frequency. The presented SST consists of a line-frequency-commutated rectifier without bulky DC-link capacitors, an LLC resonant converter, a buck converter, and a line-frequency-commutated inverter. The LLC operates efficiently with a fixed voltage gain, and the buck converter provides a voltage regulation function. As a result, high conversion efficiency, high power density, and potentially high reliability are achieved. Studies have been conducted on Energy storage systems (ESS) that replaced lithium-ion batteries (LIB) by the thermal runaway of the existing LIB. Using only the supercapacitor (SC) as a direct current power source in applications such as supercapacitor-based ESSs and mobile electric vehicle charging stations (MCSs) reduces the output voltage of the SC linearly. To solve this problem, this paper combines a boost converter capable of achieving regulatable constant voltage from an input of an SC bank to an output of a rectifier and an inductor/capacitor/capacitor (LCC) resonance converter. In this paper, an electrical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) known as SC was constructed as 64.8-V 400-FEDLC for experimental analysis. This EDLC is a high-capacity EDLC bank using 120 EDLCs with 30 serial connections and 4 parallel connections. In addition, resonance compensation circuits are analyzed and designed using a first-order harmonic approximation method (FHA). The analysis shows that the LCC resonance compensation converter is more suitable for EDLC standalone systems as an energy storage system, for LCC resonance converter topologies combined with EDLC discharge characteristics, constant voltage discharge is designed under an efficient discharge strategy, i.e., variable load conditions after the first constant voltage discharge. Based on LCC compensation analysis, the system has an optimum frequency, which allows the system to operate at the maximum efficiency point. By combining constant voltage power characteristics, constant voltage power becomes the same as the optimal power point, and thus high efficiency could be maintained in the constant voltage stage. This paper proposes a novel virtual inertia control strategy for distributed power systems with high penetration of renewable energy sources. The strategy uses a quasi-Z-source power converter to emulate the inertia response of a synchronous generator by regulating the DC-link capacitor voltage in proportion to the grid frequency deviation. This paper analyzes the effect of inertia on the frequency regulation of a single-area power system and derives the parameter design method and limitations of the virtual inertia. The paper also introduces the working principle and modulation technique of the quasi-Z-source power converter and presents the virtual inertia control scheme based on a voltage-frequency controller. The paper verifies the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy through MATLAB/Simulink simulations and dSPACE semi-physical experiments. The results show that the proposed strategy can reduce the frequency deviation and rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) by 20% and 50%, respectively, under load disturbances. The paper presents modern technologies of electrochemical energy storage. The classification of these technologies and detailed solutions for batteries, fuel cells, and supercapacitors are presented. For each of the considered electrochemical energy storage technologies, the structure and principle of operation are described, and the basic constructions are characterized. Values of the parameters characterizing individual technologies are compared and typical applications of each of them are indicated. Selected characteristics illustrating properties of the presented electrochemical energy storage devices are also shown. The advantages and disadvantages of the considered electrochemical energy storage devices and typical areas of their application are indicated. In addition, new, constantly developing technologies, not yet commercially available, are mentioned. When the solar-storage DC microgrid operates in islanded mode, the battery needs to stabilize the bus voltage and keep the state of charge (SOC) balanced in order to extend the service life of the battery and the islanded operation time. When there are multiple energy storage units in the DC microgrid, it is necessary to solve the problem of unbalanced circulation and the state of charge between batteries using a reasonable droop control method. In this paper, firstly, the DC–DC charging and discharging circuit of the battery is designed, and the unbalanced SOC of the battery caused by the different impedances of the line is analyzed. Secondly, an adaptive droop control method is proposed to solve the problems of SOC imbalance and current circulation between the batteries. Thirdly, based on MATLAB/SIMULINK R2021b simulation software, the proposed control method is modeled and simulated. To support increasing renewable capacity for a net-zero future, energy storage will play a key role in maintaining grid stability. In this paper, all current and near-future energy storage technologies are compared for three different scenarios: (1) fixed electricity buy-in price, (2) market-based electricity buy-in price, and (3) energy storage integrated into a fully renewable electricity system. In the first part of this study, an algorithm is devised to simulate strategic buy-in of electricity for energy storage. This analysis yields a qualitative decision-making tool for a given energy storage duration and size. Building upon the first part's findings, an integration study gives insight into expected power prices and expected storage size in a typical northwestern European fully renewable energy system. The integration study shows significant need for electricity storage with durations spanning from one to several days, typically around 40 h. Pumped Hydro Storage and Pumped Thermal storage surface as the best options. The overall levelized costs of storage are expected to be in the USD 200–500/MWh range. Integration of storage with renewables can yield a system-levelized cost of electricity of about USD 150/MWh. As penetration of EVs in the transportation sector is increasing, the demand for the mandatory installation of charging infrastructure also is increasing. In addition, renewable energy and energy storage systems (ESSs) are being reviewed for use in electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs). In this paper, we present an optimal electricity trading volume and an optimal installation capacity of ESSs to maximize the daily profit of the EVCSs equipped with solar power generation when the EVCSs are licensed to sell energy to the power supplier during a specific time period. By formulating and solving the optimization problem of the EVCSs, this paper analyzes validation results for the different useful lives of ESSs, the peak power of a PV generator, and weather conditions at the Yangjae Solar Station and the Suseo Station public parking lot, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Despite the unstoppable global drive towards electric mobility, the electrification of sub-Saharan Africa's ubiquitous informal multi-passenger minibus taxis raises substantial concerns. This is due to a constrained electricity system, both in terms of generation capacity and distribution networks. Without careful planning and mitigation, the additional load of charging hundreds of thousands of electric minibus taxis during peak demand times could prove catastrophic. This paper assesses the impact of charging 202 of these taxis in Johannesburg, South Africa. The potential of using external stationary battery storage and solar PV generation is assessed to reduce both peak grid demand and total energy drawn from the grid. With the addition of stationary battery storage of an equivalent of 60 kWh/taxi and a solar plant of an equivalent of 9.45 kW pk /taxi, the grid load impact is reduced by 66%, from 12 kW/taxi to 4 kW/taxi, and the daily grid energy by 58% from 87 kWh/taxi to 47 kWh/taxi. To achieve a more ecologically friendly energy transition by the year 2050 under the European "green" accord, hydrogen has recently gained significant scientific interest due to its efficiency as an energy carrier. This paper focuses on large-scale hydrogen production systems based on marine renewable-energy-based wind turbines and tidal turbines. The paper reviews the different technologies of hydrogen production using water electrolyzers, energy storage unit base hydrogen vectors, and fuel cells (FC). The focus is on large-scale hydrogen production systems using marine renewable energies. This study compares electrolyzers, energy storage units, and FC technologies, with the main factors considered being cost, sustainability, and efficiency. Furthermore, a review of aging models of electrolyzers and FCs based on electrical circuit models is drawn from the literature and presented, including characterization methods of the model components and the parameters extraction methods, using a dynamic current profile. In addition, industrial projects for producing hydrogen from renewable energies that have already been completed or are now in progress are examined. The paper is concluded through a summary of recent hydrogen production and energy storage advances, as well as some applications. Perspectives on enhancing the sustainability and efficiency of hydrogen production systems are also proposed and discussed. This paper provides a review of behavioral aging models of electrolyzers and FCs when integrated into hydrogen production systems, as this is crucial for their successful deployment in an ever-changing energy context. This paper describes a new underwater pumped storage hydropower concept (U.PSH) that can store electric energy by using the high water pressure on the seabed or in deep lakes to accomplish the energy transition from fossil to renewable sources. Conventional PSH basically consists of two storage reservoirs (upper and lower lake) at different topographical heights. It needs special topographic conditions, which are only limitedly available in mountain regions. Furthermore, due to the lack of acceptance and the environmental impact, new conventional PSH projects are very unlikely to be built in larger numbers in Europe in the near future. The presented solution solves these issues by placing the storage system on the seabed, thus having other geographical requirements. It operates as follows: in contrast to well-known conventional PSH plants, which use two separated water reservoirs of different heights, the U.PSH concept uses the static pressure of the water column in deep waters by installing a hollow concrete sphere in deep water. Storage of electricity is achieved by using a reversible pump in the hollow sphere. Upon opening a valve, water flows into the sphere, driving a turbine/generator, thereby discharging the storage device. In order to re-charge, the water is pumped out of the sphere against the pressure of the surrounding water. The power and energy, respectively, are proportional to the surrounding water pressure at the seabed. The amount of energy stored depends on the water depth and the volume of the spheres. The spheres need a cable connection to the shore or to a close-by floating transformer station (e.g., an offshore wind plant). No other connections such as pipes are needed. Substantial breakthroughs in renewable energy have been made in order to reduce energy-induced climate change. Yet our reliance on these sources is still insufficient. The UK's objective of attaining net-zero emissions by 2050 is highly dependent on shifting to an electrical system that exclusively relies on zero-carbon generation. This entails integrating renewable energy sources, along with other low-carbon sources such as nuclear power, into the energy mix. However, the primary barrier to incorporating additional renewable energy sources into the grid is their intermittent and volatile nature. Therefore, there is a pressing need to stabilise the generation of renewables and manage this volatility by enhancing the balancing mechanism between microgrids and the national grid. This paper examines previous research on microgrids and smart grids, specifically from a supply chain perspective. It has been observed that the majority of the current literature focuses on documenting selfish microgrids that strive to optimise performance at the microgrid level. However, there is an alternative approach that draws inspiration from the field of supply chain management. In response to the dual carbon policy, the proportion of clean energy power generation is increasing in the power system. Energy storage technology and related industries have also developed rapidly. However, the life-attenuation and safety problems faced by energy storage lithium batteries are becoming more and more serious. In order to clarify the aging evolution process of lithium batteries and solve the optimization problem of energy storage systems, we need to dig deeply into the mechanism of the accelerated aging rate inside and outside the lithium ion from the perspective of the safety and stability of a lithium battery in view of the complex and changeable actual working conditions during the operation of the battery. This paper takes a lithium-iron phosphate battery and a lithium-ion battery as examples to analyze. According to the specific scene of lithium battery operation, the actual operating conditions of lithium battery environmental impact factors and attenuation mechanisms are described in detail. The damage to the internal structure of lithium batteries was systematically analyzed. Furthermore, the correlation between the external influencing factors and the aging rate of lithium batteries under the coupling effect of internal failure mechanisms is analyzed. Solar generation systems with battery energy storage have become a research hotspot in recent years. This paper proposes a grid-forming control for such a system. The inverter control consists of the inner dq-axis current control, the dq-axis voltage control, the phase-locked loop (PLL) based frequency control, and the DC voltage control. The proposed control embeds the PLL into the grid-forming inverter control, offering the advantages of better synchronization and fault current-limiting capability. With the proposed control, the battery energy storage is able to provide inertial and primary frequency support during the grid frequency disturbance. Simulation models are established in PSCAD/EMTDC, and the results during the active power variation and AC voltage variation, the grid frequency disturbance, grid fault, and mode switch validate the effectiveness of the proposed control. Numerical simulations of the leakage and diffusion behavior of liquid CO2 vessels and security analyses were conducted in this paper, based on a CO2 compression energy storage system. With isentropic choking model, the leakage of vessels under specific conditions was numerically simulated. The influence of different wind speeds on leakage in near-zone field was studied. Meanwhile, the diffusion characteristics of CO2 under three different influencing factors were investigated with the UDM (Unified Dispersion Model) diffusion model, and the diffusion ranges of certain concentrations were detected in the far-zone field. The results show that the low-temperature zone of the 50 mm leak aperture can reach 0.74 m downwind, and basically does not change with wind speed. In the leakage direction, the maximum damage zone of high-speed flow can reach 7.70 m. For the far-zone field, the diffusion area and downwind distance of a dangerous concentration decrease with the increasing of wind speed, and the hazardous area of the low concentration is greatly affected. Based on specific conditions, the maximum diffusion area is 78.46 m2 at 1 m/s wind speed, and the dangerous range reaches 36.32 m downwind. The larger the leakage aperture, the faster the growth trend of the low concentration area under the same conditions. As the equivalent radius of the leakage aperture is less than 50 mm, the maximum diffusion area is proportional to the cubic of the leakage aperture radius. The higher the height of the leakage source, the smaller the concentration range at 1.5 m, which is the average human breathing height. The overall cloud moves upward, meaning that the ground risk decreases. When the leakage aperture is 50 mm and the wind speed is 1 m/s, the maximum cloud diffusion range is 857.35 m2 at the leakage height of 2 m, and the dangerous range reaches 109.53 m downwind, where the maximum concentration is 14.65%. Demand-side response (DR) and energy storage system (ESS) are both important means of providing operational flexibility to the power system. Thus, DR has a certain substitution role for ESS, but unlike DR, ESS planning has a coupling relationship between years, which makes it difficult to guarantee the reasonableness of the ESS planning results by considering only a single year. To achieve the optimal construction timing of ESS, this paper develops a consecutive year-by-year framework integrating DR and ESS to analyse and quantify the substitution effect of DR on energy storage while realizing year-by-year ESS planning. Our methods are as follows: (1) A consecutive year-by-year DR model and an ESS model are proposed; (2) These two models are combined together to achieve the purpose of considering DR in the ESS planning stage. Here, system reserve, renewable energy consumption, and preservation of power supply are given consideration to optimise the reliability and economy of the system; (3) The method is validated using a provincial real-world power grid in the eastern part of China. Microhydraulic turbines offer a promising solution for decentralized energy production, suitable for both grid-connected and standalone applications, due to their compactness and high efficiency. This paper introduces a control approach for such systems employing microhydraulic turbines as distributed generators (DGs), utilizing six-phase induction generators for electricity production. This study emphasizes control strategies for both grid-connected and standalone modes utilizing proportional-integral (PI) controllers. An integrated energy storage system based on Li-Ion battery technology is also implemented to store the excess energy and compensate for production deficits to meet demand. The results obtained using MATLAB/Simulink demonstrate efficient and reliable power management among production sources, the grid and the local load, highlighting the unique contribution of employing a six-phase induction generator with the energy storage system. This article is a broad literature review of materials used and defined as potential for heat storage processes. Both single-phase and phase-change materials were considered. An important part of this paper is the definition of the toxicity of heat storage materials and other factors that disqualify their use depending on the application. Based on the literature analysis, a methodology was developed for selecting the optimal heat storage material depending on the typical parameters of the process and the method of heat transfer and storage. Based on the presented results, a solution was proposed for three temperature ranges: 100 °C (low-temperature storage), 300 °C (medium-temperature storage) and 500 °C (high-temperature storage). For all defined temperature levels, it is possible to adapt solid, liquid or phase-change materials for heat storage. However, it is essential to consider the characteristics of the specific system and to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the accumulation material used. Rock materials are characterised by similar thermophysical parameters and relatively low prices compared with their universality, while liquid energy storage allows for greater flexibility in power generation while maintaining the operational parameters of the heat source. Renewable energy is a prominent area of research within the energy sector, and the storage of renewable energy represents an efficient method for its utilization. There are various energy storage methods available, among which compressed air energy storage stands out due to its large capacity and cost-effective working medium. While land-based compressed air energy storage power stations have been constructed worldwide, their efficiency remains low. Underwater compressed air energy storage has the potential to significantly enhance efficiency, although no such device currently exists. This paper presents the design of an UWCA-FABESD utilizing five flexible air bags for underwater gas storage and discharge. Additionally, it introduces the working principle of the adiabatic underwater compressed air energy storage system and device. Furthermore, a small-scale physical model with similar functionality was designed and manufactured to simulate the charging process of the air bag in onshore charging and discharging tests as well as posture adjustment and lifting arrangement tests, along with underwater charging and discharging tests. These experiments validated the related functions of the designed underwater compressed air flexible bag energy storage device while proposing methods for its improvement. An integrated zero-carbon power plant aggregates uncontrollable green energy, adjustable load, and storage energy resources into an entity in a grid-friendly manner. Integrated zero-carbon power plants have a strong demand response potential that needs further study. However, existing studies ignore the green value of renewable energy in power plants when participating in demand response programs. This paper proposed a mathematical model to optimize the operation of an integrated zero-carbon power plant considering the green value. A demand response mechanism is proposed for the independent system operator and the integrated zero-carbon power plants. The Stackelberg gaming process among these entities and an algorithm based on dichotomy are studied to find the demand response equilibrium. With the development of the economy and society, the importance of a secure and stable electricity supply continues to increase. However, the power grid is facing the test of excess installed capacity, the waste of renewable energy, and a low comprehensive utilization rate. This problem stems from the inconsistent peak–valley differences between power production and consumption, and the lack of clear electricity price signals, which disrupts the safe and stable operation of the power market. This paper combines the interactive transactions among clean energy power generation companies, users, and energy storage, explores how the system optimization model can be reflected in the power market through regulatory measures, and formulates the optimal output scheme of the system under the constraints of clean energy power generation forecast data, user base load forecast data, demand-side resource regulation ability, and energy storage system regulation ability to achieve the goals of comprehensive clean energy power consumption and minimum cost for users. A comprehensive analysis of the proposed model was conducted using actual data from a certain province in China, the results show that the consumption of clean energy will increase by 3% to full consumption and the total cost of users will be 32% lower than that of time-of-use (TOU) power prices, which proves the potential of the proposed joint optimization model in absorbing clean energy and the effectiveness of the market mechanism. Carbon storage services play an important role in maintaining ecosystem stability. Land use/cover change (LUCC) is the main factor leading to changes in ecosystem carbon storage. Understanding the impact of LUCC on regional carbon storage changes is crucial for protecting regional ecosystems and promoting sustainable socio-economic development. This paper selects Shanxi province as the study area and explores the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of carbon storage in Shanxi province based on the InVEST model and univariate spatial autocorrelation. The results show that the total carbon storage in Shanxi Province in 2000, 2010, and 2020 is 513.51 × 104 t C, 513.46 × 104 t C, and 509.29 × 104 t C, respectively. High carbon storage areas are distributed in forest and grassland land types, while low carbon storage areas are widely distributed in building land in urban metropolitan areas. Shanxi Province is mainly dominated by farmland, which has decreased by 3448.60 km2 in the past 20 years. Grassland has decreased by 1588.31 km2 and the area of building land has increased by 4205.73 km2. Due to the influence of carbon conversion among different land use types, the total carbon storage loss of Shanxi Province in the past 20 years was 4.21 × 104 t C. The transfer of farmland resulted in an increase in carbon stock of 14.46 × 104 t C. The transfer of grassland resulted in an increase of 17.15 × 104 t C, while the transfer of forest resulted in a decrease of 41.44 × 104 t C. The increase in land use types with low carbon density and the decrease in land use types with high carbon density led to the decrease in carbon storage in Shanxi Province. Furthermore, social factors were more likely to influence the carbon storage than natural factors, and the influence of social factors was often negative. On this basis, regional development countermeasures were proposed for the current situation of carbon storage in Shanxi Province and provide a scientific basis for Shanxi Province to achieve the carbon neutrality target. Hybrid power plants have recently emerged as reliable and flexible electricity generation stations by combining multiple renewable energy sources, energy storage systems (ESS), and fossil-based output. However, the effective operation of the hybrid power plants to ensure continuous energy dispatch under challenging conditions is a complex task. This paper proposes a dispatch engine (DE) based on mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) for the planning and management of hybrid power plants. To maintain the committed electricity output, the dispatch engine will provide schedules for operation over extended time periods as well as monitor and reschedule the operation in real time. Through precise prediction of the load and the photovoltaic (PV) and wind power outputs, the proposed approach guarantees optimum scheduling. The precise predictions of the load, PV, and wind power levels are achieved by employing a predictor of the Feed-Forward Neural Network (FFNN) type. With such a dispatch engine, the operational costs of the hybrid power plants and the use of diesel generators (DGs) are both minimized. A case study is carried out to assess the feasibility of the proposed dispatch engine. Real-time measurement data pertaining to load and the wind and PV power outputs are obtained from different locations in the Sultanate of Oman. The real-time data are utilized to predict the future levels of power output from PV and from the wind farm over the course of 24 h. The predicted power levels are then used in combination with a PV–Wind–DG–ESS–Grid hybrid plant to evaluate the performance of the proposed dispatch engine. The proposed approach is implemented and simulated using MATLAB. The results of the simulation reveal the proposed FFNN's powerful forecasting abilities. Power grids are progressing, and the possibility of incorporating DC grids toward hybrid AC/DC grids is gaining increasing relevance, as several technologies available nowadays are operating natively in DC. This paper proposes a topology of a full-controlled bidirectional dual-stage interleaved converter for interfacing hybrid AC/DC grids. The topology is based on a dual-stage architecture, constituted by an AC/DC converter and by a DC/DC converter, both based on interleaved power converters. On the AC side, which is connected to the main AC power grid, the proposed dual-stage architecture operates with sinusoidal current in phase or phase opposition with the voltage, meaning a bidirectional operation. In addition, it has the possibility of interfacing with other AC loads, such as domestic electrical appliances, or with an AC microgrid. The DC link, formed by the AC/DC power stage, is interfaced with a DC power grid, which provides numerous advantages, e.g., for interfacing battery electric vehicles directly charged in DC, as well as other DC loads, such as renewable energy sources. The DC/DC power stage is considered for interfacing with an energy storage system, which is capable of bidirectional power exchange with the DC grid or with the AC grid through the AC/DC power stage. A complete laboratory prototype was designed and developed, with the unified control algorithms implemented on a digital signal processor. The experimental results validated the operation of the full-controlled bidirectional dual-stage interleaved converter based on the specifications for the hybrid AC/DC grid, such as bidirectional operation, synchronization with the AC power grid, predictive current control, interleaved operation on both AC/DC and DC/DC power stages, DC-link voltage control for the DC grid, as well as the operation with different power levels. The Renewable Energy Community (REC) in Europe promotes renewable energy sources (RESs), offering social, economic, and environmental benefits. This new entity could alter consumer energy relationships, requiring self-consumption, energy sharing, and full utilization of RESs. Modernizing energy systems within the REC requires addressing self-consumption, energy sharing, demand response, and energy management system initiatives. The paper discusses the role of decentralized energy systems, the scenarios of the REC concept and key aspects, and activities involving energy generation, energy consumption, energy storage systems, energy sharing, and EV technologies. Moreover, the present work highlights the research gap in the existing literature and the necessity of addressing the technological elements. It also highlights that there is no uniform architecture or model for the REC, like in the case of microgrids. Additionally, the present work emphasizes the role and importance of technological elements in RECs, suggesting future recommendations for EMS, DSM, data monitoring and analytics, communication systems, and the software or tools to ensure reliability, efficiency, economic, and environmental measures. The authors also highlight the crucial role of policymakers and relevant policies, which could help in implementing these technological elements and show the importance of the RECs for a sustainable energy shift and transition. Distributed photovoltaic (PV) in the distribution network accounted for an increasing proportion of the distribution network, and the power quality of the distribution network of the power quality problem is more and more significant. In this paper, the voltage regulation methods for low-voltage distribution networks containing high-penetration PV are investigated. First, the working principles of the four voltage control methods are introduced: energy storage system configuration, regulating the reactive power output of PV inverters, restricting the active power output of PV, adjusting the switching positions of on-load regulator trap changer and distribution network reconfiguration, and then, in combination with the recent related research, the optimization of each method is compared horizontally with its respective concerns and characteristics. Coordinated voltage control through multiple flexibility resources has become the mainstream voltage regulation scheme, and distribution network voltage regulation is considered from the perspective of flexibility resources. The three types of flexibility resources, namely, source, network, and storage, have been widely used in distribution network voltage regulation. Although load-side resources have become one of the main regulation resources of the new type of power system, the current study introduces less about the participation of load-side flexibility resources in voltage regulation of LV distribution networks and advancing the application of load-side resources in voltage regulation of LV distribution networks is the focus of future research. Then, the important role of load-side flexibility resources in voltage regulation is described in three parts, namely, the important role of load-side resources, the development trend, and the suggestions for promoting the coordination of source-network-load-storage flexibility resources, aiming to promote the application of load-side resources in voltage regulation in LV distribution networks, and the suggestions and programs are proposed for the technological challenges faced by voltage regulation. In the context of today's new power system emphasizing the interaction of source, network, load, and storage, new technologies and methods for solving voltage problems in LV distribution networks are prospected, with a view to providing certain reference value for the actual operation and optimization of distribution network systems. The increasing penetration of distributed generation (DG) sources in low-voltage grid feeders causes problems concerning voltage regulation. The penetration of DG sources such as photovoltaics (PVs) in the distribution system can significantly impact the power flow and voltage conditions on the customer side. As the DG sources are more commonly connected to low-voltage distribution systems, voltage fluctuations in the distribution system are experienced because of the DG fluctuation and uncertainty. Therefore, the penetration of DGs in distribution systems is often limited by the required operating voltage ranges. By using an energy storage system (ESS), voltage fluctuation can be compensated for, thus satisfying the voltage regulation requirements. This paper presents an ESS scheduling algorithm based on the power injection data obtained from a smart metering system. The proposed ESS scheduling algorithm is designed for use within a direct current (DC) distribution grid, which comprises customers, each with a PV and an ESS system. As the penetration rate of wind power systems is rising, which causes the overall system's inertia to decline, the power system's capacity to regulate frequency will be negatively affected. Therefore, this paper investigates the inertia control of doubly fed induction generation, and an energy storage system is installed in the wind farm to respond to the frequency deviation. First, a fuzzy control-based virtual inertia adaptive control strategy is presented. The goal of dynamic adjustment of the virtual inertia coefficient is realized by taking into account the uncertain factors of wind speed and frequency change rate. A recovery strategy based on the energy storage system's level of charge is employed to prevent overcharging and over-discharging of the battery. Then, a weight factor based on frequency deviation is introduced to combine the droop output of the energy storage system with the virtual inertia output of the doubly fed induction generation, and the joint output mode of the wind storage system is determined in each stage of primary frequency regulation. Finally, the simulation verification is performed using the wind storage system simulation model created by MATLAB.
