This paper presents a narrative literature review on the evidence relating to the youth worker role with young people in the hospital setting, within which the research gaps and inconsistencies within the body of knowledge available are highlighted. Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, AMED and British Nursing Index databases were searched and screened for papers which involved the youth worker role with young people in a hospital setting. Data relating to the youth workers who worked with young people in the hospital setting were extracted by two independent reviewers. A total of 11 papers were identified dating from 1971 to 2018, from a range of countries. In order to present the available body of knowledge, this narrative synthesis of the literature is presented under three headings: descriptive work, service evaluation and empirical research. The findings suggest that the youth worker role in the hospital setting has a positive impact upon the lives of young people and this was accomplished through the interventions the youth worker employed when working with young people. Equally, challenges were highlighted relating to the youth worker undertaking their role in the hospital setting. However, changes during this time period in attitudes towards adolescent health particularly within the United Kingdom, along with the loss of funding for youth work has had an impact on the research in this area of clinical practice. The number of descriptive papers in this review, highlights the necessity for empirical evidence in both quantitative and qualitative research in order to gain a greater understanding of what the youth worker role in the hospital provides to young people and the impact of their interventions from the perspectives of young people, parents, youth workers and members of the multi-disciplinary team. Acquiring information about one's child's cancer diagnosis is a complex and ever-changing process, and parents' needs change over time. As yet, we know little about what information parents require at different stages of their child's illness. This paper is part of a larger randomized control trial studying the parent-centered information given to mothers and fathers. The aim of this paper was to describe the topics addressed in person-centered meetings between nurses and parents of children with cancer and how those changed over time. Using qualitative content analysis, we analyzed nurses' written summaries of 56 meetings with 16 parents and then computed for each topic the percentage of parents who brought it up at any time during the intervention. The main categories were Child's disease and treatment (addressed by 100% of parents), Consequences of treatment (88%), Emotional management for the child (75%), Emotional management for the parent (100%), Social life of the child (63%), and Social life of the parent (100%). Different topics were addressed at different points in time, and fathers raised more concerns about the child's emotional management and the consequences of treatment than mothers. This paper suggests that parental information demands change over time and differ between fathers and mothers, implying that information should be person-centered. Mental health (MH) issues can affect all children and young people (CYP), and can form a long-term negative impact on their life prospects if left unchecked. It is of utmost importance that CYP's voices are heard and that they are involved in decision-making and care planning. CYP aged 4–17 years old have provided an invaluable insight into their experiences of mental health services within healthcare settings. This review undertaken as part of a Masters in Advanced Professional Practice explores the CYP's views and experiences within primary, secondary, and tertiary mental health services. This paper focuses on an innovative approach to preparing children and young people, with Spina Bifida, to move from child-centered to adult-oriented healthcare systems. Reflecting on our role in delivering a national nurse led service, we set to identify and critique international transition tools in use for this population. Specifically, we aimed to identify the core capabilities and indicators of progression to successful transition, so that holistic interventions could be planned to match the needs of individuals and their carers. There were two phases to the study, initially focusing on a systematic literature review on transition tools and the specific items that these tools captured, including skills, abilities and behaviors. Phase two culminated in the articulation of a segmented and incremental "road map", aligned with facets deemed essential for a successful healthcare transition. The reporting of the literature review (phase one) followed the PRISMA guidelines and shaped the qualitative element of the study (phase two) through the use of semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. The search strategy yielded 11 studies, which were then manually searched for other relevant literature, adding a further 14 articles. The review analyzed 7 specific tools for spina bifida and 8 generic tools, which were deemed appropriate for this group of patients. A comprehensive list of core capabilities was then articulated and framed to fit a progression timeline. Specific interventions were formulated to explore ways to co-produce resources that could enhance and support a planned transition to adult-focused services. Our proposed mapping of capabilities and progression could shape other transition programs, where nurses work collaboratively with young people, carers and other members of a team. A growing body of conceptual evidence over the last decade has increased our understanding of parents' experiences of having an infant with complex congenital heart disease. These concepts include parents' feelings of uncertainty, fear, excitement, and mastery. However, little is known about parents' experiences, confidence, and knowledge acquisition during transition from hospital to home with their infant after the first stage of complex cardiac surgery. A theoretical framework to assess, plan and implement child and family centered care would assist children's cardiac nurses responsible for parental education, discharge planning and coordination. To explore parents' experiences of the transition from hospital to home with their infant, following the first stage of cardiac surgery. A prospective mixed methods longitudinal design. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken, including administration of the Maternal Confidence Questionnaire at four timepoints: before discharge following stage one cardiac surgery (T0), 2 weeks' post discharge (T1), 8 weeks' post discharge (T2) and after stage two surgery (T3). Qualitative data were thematically analyzed. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the sample and non-parametric repeated measures analysis of variance was used to analyze changes over time in maternal confidence scores. Sixteen parents of 12 infants participated. Four "patterns of transition experience" emerged, the fourth "Mastery", is discussed in this paper. Mastery can be contextualized in terms of the parents' journeys of knowledge construction, gaining confidence and reflection. Learning was dynamic and transformational, but successful learning and acquisition of knowledge was also dependent upon the parents' ability to absorb, integrate and adjust at any given time. Confidence at T0 was significantly lower than at T1 (p =.011), T2 (p =.018) and T3 (p =.012). There were no significant differences between scores at T1, T2 and T3. Liminality, as a concept, described the between and betwixt time that parents experienced as they were preparing for discharge from hospital; excitement to be going home balanced with the fear of being alone and confidence in looking after their fragile infant. Parents of infants with complex congenital heart disease obtain knowledge, confidence, and mastery dependent upon their transition experience and their personal journey through pre-liminal, liminal, and post-liminal phases of discharge from hospital to home. A conceptual framework "Parenting through Transitions – hospital to home" emerged that could assist in structuring assessment of parents' knowledge and support needs within a coordinated discharge process. Identifying individualized support would promote adaptation and adjustment during transition from the pre to post liminal phase, following their infant's first stage of complex cardiac surgery. Parents learning was dynamic and transformational, learning opportunities overlapped transitional phases of their infant's journey, but successful learning and acquisition of knowledge was also dependent upon the parents' ability to absorb, integrate and adjust at any given time. The transition from hospital to home and traversing the physical boundary of leaving the hospital for the first time with their infant (liminal phase), was loaded with emotionally traumatic experiences that could not be separated from the transition that was being explored within this study. Adjusting to the new situation, developing confidence over time, and becoming comfortable as they mastered new skills, demonstrated that some of these parents could pass through that liminal space to mastery of a new normal (post-liminal phase), which encompassed competence, integration, and comfort. Experiencing bereavement as a child or young person (CYP) can have long-lasting effects. The societal and environmental burdens of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic exacerbated the experience of loss and grief for many CYP, who were unable to access their usual the support networks. However, it is still unclear what is currently known and not known about the experiences of CYP bereaved during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. This review used the framework of Arksey and O'Malley and included five stages: (1) identifying the research question; (2) identifying relevant studies; (3) study selection; (4) charting the data; (5) collating, summarizing, and reporting the results. The methodological quality of the included studies was also assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool. The PRISMA framework was used for reporting the results. The electronic databases Medline, PsychINFO, CINAHL, and PubMed were searched for relevant articles. A total of three papers meeting the inclusion criteria were included in this review and two main themes identified: (1) support (which included sub-themes; social isolation and the impact on support; support from family and friends; wider support networks); (2) Emotional impact of bereavement during a pandemic. Access to support networks is crucial for CYP to understand and process their emotions relating to their bereavement experience. The pandemic meant that many usual support networks such as family and friends were inaccessible to CYP, who struggled to deal with their experience of grief during this time. Schools are a valuable support mechanism and can help CYP understand their emotions through open discussions about their bereavement. Children can sometimes find it difficult to articulate their experiences if they have to rely solely on words. Giving children the opportunity to use arts-based research approaches can support their participation in research and create a bridge that enables them to express their perspectives and feelings. This paper focuses on the ethical and practical considerations when using photo elicitation interviews (PEI) in research with children. The discussion and examples provided are drawn from an international study that used auto-driven PEI, where photographs are taken by children themselves, to explore children’s experiences of living with a chronic condition and the impact condition management may have on their everyday lives. In this paper we critically explore the issues arising from our use of PEI including children’s participation and engagement, balancing power and control, and keeping children safe. The main areas of focus for the paper are how PEI provided a means of shifting control; how setting photographic boundaries influenced our PEI study with children; and how we addressed risks associated with the method. Our experience shows that PEI is an engaging and valuable research method, providing a powerful medium for obtaining rich data with children. However, PEI is challenging and it requires researchers to conscientiously address ethical and practical aspects that extend beyond those inherent to standard (words-alone) interviews. The aim of the paper is to examine the relationship between infant and young child feeding practices (aged 6–23 months) and stunting in East Jakarta. A cross-sectional study design is conducted with three main instruments: maternal and child characteristics, feeding practices, and health behaviors. Sampling is done by simple random sampling technique with a total of 143 respondent mothers in East Jakarta. The results of the analysis show no significant relation between infant and young child feeding practices and stunting (p = 0.147), and its relation with maternal and child characteristics, such as maternal age, maternal employment status, maternal educational level, low birthweight less than 2,500 g, sanitation and health behaviors, and household income (p > 0.05). Emotional response toward menarche is a psychological problem for female adolescents. In addition menarche is considered taboo and embarrassing by female adolescents. Many female adolescents have a negative feeling and do not prepare for menarche. The purpose of this paper is to identify female adolescents' preparation and emotional response toward menarche. This study used a qualitative method including focus group discussion (FGD) and in-depth interview. FGD was carried out with five female adolescents in a school setting about female adolescents' preparations and emotional response toward menarche. The participants were female adolescent students who had not entered menarche yet. Some teachers were also interviewed as key persons. The results of this study indicate that female adolesents do not prepare for menarche. The participants did not have adequate knowledge and felt ashamed and worried about menarche. This study recommended the use of reproductive health education related to menarcheal preparations in school and community settings to prepare female adolescents to confidently face menarche. This article presents the findings of a service evaluation on the role of the youth worker offered to young people in the hospital setting across the United Kingdom and what differentiates the role of the youth worker from other health-care professionals, as described by young people, parents, and members of the existing multidisciplinary team. Young people, parents, and members of multidisciplinary teams were approached by a youth worker in the hospital regarding the purpose of the evaluation and the online survey relating to their views and experiences of working with a youth worker in the hospital setting. Data were analyzed descriptively. The n value represents the total number of responses: Young people 11–25 years (n = 47), mothers/fathers (n = 16), and members of the multidisciplinary team (n = 76). The findings suggested that the youth worker was highly valued by all, with a consensus that they had a positive impact on the experiences of young people, their parents, and members of the multidisciplinary teams. Youth workers were reported as offering a more relatable style of engagement that connected with young people on a different and more informal level than other members of the multidisciplinary team. Their approach to the support provided was also different as their focus was guided by what young people valued. Youth workers acted as the bridge between young people, their parents, and the multidisciplinary team and were considered by the multidisciplinary teams to be a fundamental ingredient when working with young people in the hospital setting. The findings from this evaluation provide unique insights into the role the youth worker offers to young people in hospital settings that is different from what other health-care professionals provide, as reported by young people, parents, and the multidisciplinary team. However, further evaluation of the service should include objective outcome measures of the role and in-depth qualitative research to gain a greater and more detailed understanding of young peoples', parents', and members of the multidisciplinary team's views and experiences of what makes this role different. Blood sampling from a peripheral vein in children can be significant. Pediatric nurses should be able to use the techniques which decrease the pain and fear duration of the blood sampling. This research studied the effect of vibration bee and whistling (concentrate on breathing) blood sampling on pain and fear in the children's emergency. In this randomized clinical trial study, 120 children ages 3–6 years referred to a pediatric ward in Najaf, Iraq, using Random Blocking Method, were divided into three groups; vibration bee, whistling, and control group. A musical vibration bee, with the cold bag attached to it, was closed for 5 minutes at approximately 5-10 cm above the blood sampling site. A final minute, the vibration was applied; then, the procedure was done. The pain severity was measured by Wong Baker Faces scale. Data were analyzed by SPSS19 software at the significant level of 95%. There was a significant difference in pain intensity between the control groups and the intervention groups (p =.000). Moreover, there was a significant difference in children's medical fear scale between the control groups and the intervention groups (p =.000). Whistling (concentrate on breathing) may be an easily accessed, inexpensive, and effective technique to control or reduce pain and fear in young children. But, vibration bee with cold has a greater effect for reducing pain and fear. It is suggested to use vibration bee (with cold) in painful aggressive procedures in children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated parent-reported barriers and enablers to establishing sun safety practices with young children (0–4 years; N = 423) living in Australia. An online survey examined parent/child adherence to recommended sun safety practices and barriers and enablers to establishing sun safety practices. Adherence to different sun safety practices varied across age groups. Lack of child cooperation was the most commonly-endorsed barrier while child compliance was the most commonly-endorsed facilitator. Young children's lack of cooperation with sun safety practices represents a major obstacle for parents. In conclusion, the development and testing of family-based intervention approaches to reduce child resistance and promote cooperation is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Children and young people (CYP) can be empowered to take on roles as agents of change in their own communities. CYP want to be heard and should be actively involved in the co-production, design and development of services aimed at them to ensure that the resulting services are acceptable and accessible. Little analysis of the framing and discourse of co-production in different contexts has been undertaken. Building on Children's Advocacy Center models from the United States of America (which are held in high esteem by local communities), there is perceived value of such a center in the UK. A service development initiative was designed to work with children from Greater Manchester (UK) to determine the potential for the establishment of a children's advocacy center in the North of England. This report presents the design and outcome of the initiative and contributes to the literature on the co-production of such service development projects with CYP, notably the means of achieving that outcome. Recommendations are made for the piloting of an Advocacy House model in the UK with collaborative efforts between CYP as well as health, education, law enforcement, social care providers, charities and voluntary groups. There has been an increased emphasis on the voice of the child since the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991. Since that time, health and social care researchers have increasingly involved disabled children and young people in research, rather than relying on the views of adults as proxies, for example, parents and professionals. Drawing on doctoral research and the extensive experience of the authors, the aim of this article is to critically reflect on "what worked" along with the challenges of interviewing the children and young people who took part. Practical and methodological issues, such as the need for thorough preparation, the interview process, understanding the children and young people and managing the presence of others are discussed. Finally, recommendations are made for future researchers, including making participation fun, using a sensitive and individualized approach and conducting multiple visits. It is only by considering these factors that we can meaningfully involve disabled children and young people and facilitate their participation in research interviews. Primary health care facilities offer an entry point to the health care system in Malawi. Challenges experienced by these facilities include limited resources (both material and human), poor or inadequate knowledge, skills and attitudes of health care workers in emergency management, and delay in referral from primary care level to other levels of care. These contribute to poor outcomes including children dying within the first 24 hours of hospital admission. Training of health care workers and support staff in Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) at primary care levels can help improve care of children with acute and severe illnesses. Health care workers and support staff in the primary care settings were trained in pediatric ETAT. The training package for health care workers was adapted from the Ministry of Health ETAT training for district and tertiary health care. Content for support staff focused on non-technical responsibility for lifesaving in emergency situations. The primary health care facilities were provided with a minimum treatment package comprising emergency equipment, supplies and drugs. Supportive supervisory visits were conducted quarterly. The training manual for health care workers was adapted from the Ministry of Health package and the support staff training manual was developed from the adapted package. Eight hundred and seventy-seven participants were trained (336 health care workers and 541 support staff). Following the training, triaging of patients improved and patients were managed as emergency, priority or non-urgent. This reduced the number of referral cases and children were stabilized before referral. Capacity building of health care workers and support staff in pediatric ETAT and the provision of a basic health center package improved practice at the primary care level. The practice was sustained through institutional mentorship and pre-service and in-service training. The practice of triage and treatment including stabilization of children with dangerous signs at the primary health care facility improves emergency care of patients, reduces the burden of patients on referral hospitals and increases the number of successful referrals. Approximately 13% of United States (US) children have atopic dermatitis (AD), also known as eczema. AD is a chronic skin condition associated with significant burdens on quality of life and both individual and overall health-care system costs. The pathogenesis of AD is considered to be multifactorial, with biologic factors such as family history and genetics often reported as influencing risk. Some lesser discussed determinants of AD prevalence and severity are sociocultural, such as race/ethnicity, neighborhood, housing type, income level, and family structure. While several factors appear to contribute to disparities in childhood AD, black or African American race/ethnicity most significantly predicts AD prevalence, severity, disease control, access to care, and family impact. There is a shortage of research related to disparities in AD, an important topic considering the large percentage of families that are affected by the disease. This article is a narrative literature review of sociocultural influences on AD disparities in US children. The purpose of this review is to increase awareness of these important risk factors and to suggest related, future areas of research that may positively impact overall outcomes in children with AD. The risk of alcohol related harm is experienced disproportionality by young people aged 15–24 years. Harmful use of alcohol has serious effects on individual physical and mental wellbeing and is considered by the World Health Organization to be one of the main risk factors for poor health globally. It is crucial to understand the factors that influence drinking behavior in young people in order to inform prevention strategies to prevent problematic drinking. This is particularly paramount during the transition into young adulthood (around 18–25 years), when risky health behaviors are likely to become embedded. This pilot study adopted a qualitative descriptive methodology that facilitates exploration of what young people say about their own experiences and behavior, as it relates to SNS use and alcohol consumption. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in Newcastle, NSW Australia. An inductive, semantic approach to thematic analysis was selected to analyze the data as this method supported the exploratory nature of the pilot study and ensured that the themes identified were strongly linked to the data. Four main organizing themes that arose from the collected data were: organizing friends; safety amongst friends, planning not to plan; and different event – different plans. All of the participants stated they preferred to use Facebook Messenger™ to connect and share in a group conversation with peers. Convenience, cost and accessibility emerged as the main reasons for using SNSs to plan nights out. Planning for a night out using SNSs allows young people to impulsively plan and change plans – making planning fluid and asynchronous. To date, despite the global use of SNSs, the influence of SNSs in young adults' planning for events during which alcohol is served is relatively unknown. This pilot study gives us a some understanding of how young people use SNSs to plan and prepare for a night out where alcohol is served. Further research needs to be conducted to determine whether SNSs can be used effectively to promote health behavior change or be used as forums for advice seeking and support when attending events where alcohol is served, with the ultimate goal of lowering risky behaviors and thereby improving health outcomes for young people. Adolescent obesity continues to be a serious concern around the world, placing young people at risk for chronic conditions and early death. Research has shown that social relationships are important in making health behavior changes, such as following health-care recommendations for eating and physical activity. Specifically, the trust of health-care providers has been shown to be important in making health behavior change. Evidence suggests that obese young adults are less trusting of health-care providers than their healthy weight peers, but it is not known if this also applies to obese adolescents. The purpose of this secondary analysis study was to determine relationships between the trust of health-care providers and body mass index percentile in adolescents. Participants were 224 adolescents aged 14–19 years attending a public high school in the Midwestern United States. The Wake Forest Physician Trust scale measured the trust of health-care providers. Height and weight were collected at a school screening; body mass index percentile categories were determined according to age- and sex-adjusted body mass index percentiles. One-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey tests showed trust scores varied significantly between body mass index percentile categories of girls. Results suggest it may be necessary for health-care providers to make additional efforts to build trust with obese adolescent girls than with other groups of adolescents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Work-related stress in nursing is widely acknowledged. This integrative review was undertaken to systematically identify and appraise the causes of work-related stress experienced by registered nurses working with children at home. Ten studies were included, eight of which focused solely on the experiences of nurses providing palliative and end of life care at home for children. One study focused on the experiences of newly qualified nurses and one on the experiences of nurses caring for sick children at home at different stages within their care trajectory. Stress was experienced by nurses caring for children at home and identified and acknowledged within all included studies. Recurrent themes reported in the literature that contributed to work-related stress were, provision of out of hours care, challenge of developing and maintaining skills (clinical and non-clinical), ambiguity of roles and relationships (professional team and child and family), lack of resources, emotional toll, and lack of staff support. The causes of work-related stress highlighted in this review need to be proactively addressed; thus, providing an opportunity to improve the working experiences of nurses improve job satisfaction and overall wellbeing. Families of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) can have difficulties coping with the stress of their child's condition and would benefit from assistance to cope better. To address the needs of these parents, the Australian Center for Heart Health/HeartKids Australia/Melbourne Graduate School of Education co-produced Family Coping Project was initiated. This project involved two systematic literature reviews, interviews with parents of children with CHD, and the development and piloting of a manualised parental coping program. The primary aims of the pilot study were to determine whether the program would: attract high needs families; enhance the coping self-efficacy of parents; and be acceptable to parents in terms of content and mode of delivery. The secondary aims were to investigate whether the program would impact on parental coping, parental stress and general stress. Parents completed pre-, post-program and 6-month follow up assessment measures, with parent stress scores being compared to stress scores reported for other chronic condition parent carer groups. Twenty-one parents participated and provided baseline data. They were found to be significantly more stressed than other parent carer groups. Eleven parents completed post-program data and 13 completed 6-month follow-up data. There was a significant increase in parents' coping self-efficacy from pre- to post-program, and from pre- to 6-months. Parents' use of productive coping styles increased significantly from pre- to post-program. The program was rated as highly acceptable in terms of content and delivery mode. The pilot provides strong evidence for upscaling the program in conjunction with individualized psychological support for parents to extend knowledge acquisition and attitude change into enhanced coping skills and demonstrated the benefits of a co-production process. Risky behaviors are common in developing countries, especially in adolescence. Moreover, sensation seeking is an important factor in personality. This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between risky behaviors and sensation-seeking in a sample of Iranian adolescents. This study used a cross-sectional method with 400 high school adolescents (age between 15 and 21 years old) in Kashan city from multistage random sampling. The research instrument consisted of three parts: a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) and the Zuckerman Sensation-Seeking Scale-V (SSS-V). Data analysis was performed using the t-test, ANOVA, chi-square, regression and Spearman correlation coefficient in SPSS v 11.5. Risky behaviors were found in 51.2% of students, and a significant difference was found between the male and female students in this regard (p <.021). The overall sensation-seeking score and the scores in the dimensions of experience seeking, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility were higher in males than females (p <.0001). All dimensions of sensation-seeking other than disinhibition dimension could significantly predict risky behavior. Sensation seeking can be used as an indicator for screening risky behaviors. Detailed planning on the part of the health care system and public authorities is recommended for appropriate screening and counseling adolescents with risky behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study was conducted to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a self-report activity diary completed by parents and older children to assess the child's daily activity in children with and without special needs. The study included 36 child/parent dyads stratified by child age and diagnosis. Parents (n = 36) and children ≥13 years (n = 12) were asked to report on the child's daily activity using an activity diary. Feasibility was determined based on successfully returned diaries and acceptability via post-study interview. Activity diaries were submitted by 94% of the parents and 100% of the children, with 83% and 80%, respectively, successfully completed. Comments provided post-study regarding the diaries were primarily on the format and were generally negative. The activity diary was feasible to use, but not well accepted within our sample of children with and without special needs or their parents. Unintentional injuries are a growing global public health problem that causes mortality, morbidity, and disability among children. These injuries are common among under-fives and form a significant burden on healthcare systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Nurses and doctors have a major role to play in the prevention of home injuries, as expressed in many international reports. In Palestine, there is a paucity of research in this area. Therefore, this study aims to explore nurses' and doctors' perceptions and practices regarding the prevention of home injuries among children aged under-five years. A qualitative approach was followed, whereby semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 24 nurses and doctors who worked with children in a primary health care setting. The derived data were analyzed using thematic analysis. This study found that most of the nurses and doctors who were interviewed reported positive attitudes toward working on this topic; the majority of them attempted to work on injury prevention. Nevertheless, they needed further support to fulfil this potential role, as they faced many barriers in their daily practice in this area. Effective assessment tools are an essential element of early identification of problems, enabling early intervention in the first two or so years of life. This article reports on the development and evaluation of a Universal Assessment Tool for Early Help in Early Years. The project aim was to develop, pilot and evaluate a new universal assessment tool named "My Family Profile" for use within Northamptonshire, United Kingdom, from pregnancy until a child reaches 2/2.5 years of age. A flowchart demonstrates the stages of the process including how each step contributed toward the tool and end report (Neill et al., 2015). The project used an intervention design enabling collaborative inter-agency working and ensured parents were engaged throughout the process. The methods used in developing the tool incorporated collaborative working, content analysis, format requirements, questioning styles and information sharing. The tool was evaluated using focus groups and individual interviews with parents, an online evaluation questionnaire and audit of completed assessment forms with practitioners. The resulting report (Neill et al., 2015) contained "My Family Profile" highlighted five key recommendations: (1) It is developed in a digital format with secure "cloud" storage, accessible from all IT platforms in use by child health/care professionals; (2) it is implemented with a comprehensive training program for professionals; (3) it is formally evaluated following implementation; (4) it is extended up to school entry and through school years; and (5) it is developed for use within other locations in the United Kingdom. Although adolescence is considered a difficult time for diabetes management, there is little published qualitative research on adolescent Jamaicans with diabetes. This study investigates the experiences of Jamaican adolescents living with diabetes to determine how their needs can be addressed. Nineteen adolescents participated in two urban and two rural focus groups and were asked to draw pictures representing their experiences. Thematic analysis was used to analyze their narratives, while their drawings were analyzed using a variation of Lauritsen and Mathiasen's (2003) method. Results show that control was the central theme: children felt controlled by diabetes and the people in their lives. Diabetes restricted their activities and imposed a sense of difference. Support from those around them could be both helpful and constricting. Children tried to resist control through disregarding the rules, being secretive, defiant, and manipulating others into allowing nonadherence. They also tried to adhere to the rules, find a balance between following them and engaging in desired activities, and to be positive. Those most positive about living with diabetes did not feel controlled by diabetes or others' understandings of it and, with loved ones' support, had rejected diabetes' negative meanings. Extreme distress was felt by rural children. All children had been noncompliant. Healthcare practitioners and policymakers should provide education in schools to facilitate fair and effective treatment. Mental health specialists should assist children to negotiate stigma and distress. Group sessions with significant others are important for collaborative decisions on enabling support. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the combined music and sleep hygiene education (COMMASH-E) intervention on the fatigue, sleep quality and functional status of children with cancer residing in temporary lodges in Indonesia. The design of this study was a quasi-experimental pre-post test with a control group. We recruited children with cancer aged 7–18 years (n = 58) using a consecutive sampling method and assigned them to intervention and control groups (n = 29 in each group). The intervention group had the COMMASH-E intervention while the control group received routine care. Fatigue, sleep quality and functional status were measured on days 1 and 4 using Allen's Fatigue in Childhood Cancer Scale, the Sleep Problem in Children Scale and the Barthel Index, respectively. T-dependent and independent tests and Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) tests were performed for the data analysis. There were significant differences in fatigue, sleep quality and functional status between the intervention and control groups after the COMMASH-E intervention. Nonetheless, chemotherapy drugs contributed to the children's sleep quality. COMMASH-E was found to be more effective than routine care in the reducing fatigue and increasing the sleep quality and functional status of children with cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mucositis is a common and devastating side effect of chemotherapeutic agents in children undergoing chemotherapy. The prevention and management of mucositis are necessary to improve these children's quality of life. Oral care is a recommended strategy for preventing and managing oral mucositis. Thus, the objective of this study was to identify the relationship between oral care practice and mucositis incidence. A cross-sectional analytical design was used in this study. A total of 34 children from 3 to 12 years of age with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who were in the last cycle of chemotherapy were recruited through a snowball sampling method. The Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) was administered to assess the severity of mucositis. A majority of the participants (51.5%) had mucositis after completing the last cycle of chemotherapy. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant relationship between their oral care practice at home and mucositis incidence. These results show that oral care at home is linked with the incidence and severity of mucositis. Nurses should educate children with leukemia and their parents regarding good oral hygiene practice. The objective of this study is to describe the sexual compulsivity of Indonesian college students. We used a cross-sectional design and recruited 301 college students in Universitas Indonesia. Data were collected using the modified Sexual Compulsivity Scale (SCS) instrument. These findings show that Indonesian students have lower sexual compulsivity scale (mean: 11.39 ± 4.21). Male students have significantly higher SCS score than female students (p = 0.000). Working students were also found to have a higher SCS score than those who did not work (p = 0.039). Further studies on sexual compulsivity among young adults in Indonesia are deemed necessary to give more understanding about sexual compulsivity. This study examines first year children's nursing students' anxieties before their first practice placement and their support needs during that time. Strategies to address needs are highlighted. A questionnaire was completed by children's nursing students (n = 21) before their initial practice placement to establish their expectations and concerns. A subgroup (n = 5) took part in a focus group following placement to establish consensus around the support that helped and what could help future students prepare for first placement. The resultant data indicated the importance of students having a sense of belonging to their practice placement, trusting website information, induction days, and the involvement of a more senior student in their preparation, in addition to facilitative mentors. Using similar methodology to that used with students, a subgroup of professional staff took part in two focus groups (FG1 n = 5, FG2 n = 4) to establish consensus around support initiatives using areas identified by students as priorities that could better facilitate this initial practice placement. Although commonalities existed within both students and professionals, some differences were highlighted. A student's first practice placement is of utmost importance in affirming their choice to study nursing. Academic and clinical staff play a crucial part in this decision-making. Caring for a child with complex health care needs places additional stress and time demands on parents. Parents often turn to their peers to share their experiences, gain support, and lobby for change; increasingly this is done through social media. The WellChild #notanurse_but is a parent-driven campaign that states its aim is to "shine a light" on the care parents, who are not nurses, have to undertake for their child with complex health care needs and to raise decision-makers' awareness of the gaps in service provision and support. This article reports on a study that analyzed the #notanurse_but parent-driven campaign videos. The purpose of the study was to consider the videos in terms of the range, content, context, perspectivity (motivation), and affect (sense of being there) in order to inform the future direction of the campaign. Analysis involved repeated viewing of a subset of 30 purposively selected videos and documenting our analysis on a specifically designed data extraction sheet. Each video was analyzed by a minimum of 2 researchers. All but 2 of the 30 videos were filmed inside the home. A variety of filming techniques were used. Mothers were the main narrators in all but 1 set of videos. The sense of perspectivity was clearly linked to the campaign with the narration pressing home the reality, complexity, and need for vigilance in caring for a child with complex health care needs. Different clinical tasks and routines undertaken as part of the child's care were depicted. Videos also reported on a sense of feeling different than "normal families"; the affect varied among the researchers, ranging from strong to weaker emotional responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This participatory action research study was situated within a larger research study, which investigated the development of a peer-led Aboriginal parent support program in the remote setting of Halls Creek in Western Australia. The aim of this smaller research component was to explore the self-perceived role of home visiting peer support workers in this remote area. Participatory Action Research methodology was employed, within which eleven Action Learning Sets were used to facilitate participant collaboration (n = 8). All participant data was collected in focus groups during the Action Learning Sets where culturally appropriate home visiting parent support strategies were developed and examined in partnership with a child health nurse researcher. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis with three themes relating to the peer support workers’ self-perceived role being identified: Helping parents be strong for their children; Strengthening culture; and Facilitating effective communication. These elements support peer support worker activities, helping parents to enhance their children’s physical and psychosocial developmental environment. The main objective of this study is to describe incidence rates (IRs) of low-speed vehicle run-over events among children aged 0 to 14 years in Queensland, Australia, from 1999 to 2009, by Indigenous Australian status. Data on low-speed vehicle run-over events among children aged 0 to 14 years in Queensland were obtained for 11 calendar years (1999-2009) from all relevant data sources using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes, text description, word searches, and medical notes and were manually linked. Crude fatal and nonfatal IRs were calculated for Indigenous and non-Indigenous children; trends over time were analyzed by chi-square test for trend. Relative risks (RRs) were also calculated. Data on demographics, health service usage/outcomes, incident characteristics, and injury characteristics were obtained. Descriptive and multivariate analyses were performed in order to investigate whether these characteristics varied with Indigenous status. IRs were higher among Indigenous Australian children aged 0 to 14 years (21.76/100,000/annum) than other Australian children (14.09), for every year of the 11-year study. The age group most at risk for low-speed vehicle run-over events were young children aged 0 to 4 years, where incidence was 2.13 times greater among Indigenous Australian children (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.67-2.71). There were no significant changes in incidence of low-speed vehicle run-overs among Indigenous Australian children for 0 to 4, 5 to 9, and 10 to 14 years or overall (0-14 years), during the 11-year study period. Over three quarters (n = 107) of low-speed vehicle run-over events involving Indigenous Australian children occurred outside of major cities (43.7% in other Australian children). These data indicate that Indigenous Australian children are at increased risk of low-speed vehicle run-over events and that characteristics of these events may vary as a function of Indigenous status. Pregnant teens often feel uncertain in the last trimester about their ability to take care of their baby. At this time, maternal confidence in the ability to care for the baby is an important step in the preparation for becoming a mother. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of an Indonesian version of the Young Adult Maternal Confidence Scale (YAMCS) as an instrument to measure maternal self-efficacy of pregnant teens in the last trimester. The study consisted of 90 pregnant teens, age of respondents less than 19 years and living in 1 of 3 sub-districts: Cilember, Sukamanah and Megamendung, Bogor Regency. West Java. All the participants completed a questionnaire based on the YAMCS to assess maternal self-efficacy. The YAMCS consists of 3 dimensions (perception of ability, uncertainty, and mothering behaviors) and 10 items. All items of the YAMCS had corrected item-total item correlation more than 0.3 and had 0.859 Cronbach’s α scores. Based on the findings of this study, this questionnaire is a valid and reliable measure of maternal self-efficacy of pregnant teens in Indonesia. Parental stress is a common theme in studies of parents during the inter-hospital transfer of an acutely ill child, however, little is known about their specific information needs at this critical juncture in care delivery. In this study we aimed to understand parents’ communication preferences and information needs immediately prior to the inter-hospital transfer of their acutely ill child. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 parents between March and October 2014 to explore their experiences of communication practices immediately prior to the transfer of their child from a secondary to a tertiary care center in Ireland. Data were analyzed using the modified Van Kaam method. Two key themes emerged: “worst-case scenario” and ability to absorb information. Parents value being prepared for the potential deterioration of their child during an inter-hospital transfer.
