Objective: To investigate the perspectives of Australian nursing educators on the preparation of Bachelor of Nursing students for the care of older people's oral health. Background: The Australian population is ageing. Older people with poor oral health are at increased risk of worsening health and chronic disease conditions. Nurses can and need to take a leadership role in improving and maintaining older Australians' oral health in community, hospital, and residential care settings. Thus, it is important to investigate the perspectives of nursing educators on the preparation of nursing students for the care of older people's oral health. Study design and methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 participants, including course coordinators, lecturers, directors, and researchers at 10 universities delivering accredited Bachelor of Nursing programs across seven different states in Australia. Data were analysed thematically. Results: Four themes were identified in nursing educators' perspectives: (1) the education of nursing students in providing oral healthcare is important, (2) there are notable gaps in nursing students' oral health education, (3) there are both internal and external barriers to strengthening oral health education across nursing programs, and (4) there is a need to develop and promote a shared oral health curriculum that includes interprofessional education and collaborative practice. Inherent in these themes was the need for a clear definition of the role of nurses in oral healthcare. Discussion and Conclusion: It is recommended that administrators and policymakers develop nursing accreditation standards that specify the role of nurses in oral health education, and the scope of this education including interprofessional and collaborative practice, for the oral healthcare of older people. Infusing such standards in nursing curricula will better educate and prepare nursing students for effective practice and leadership in gerontological care. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had widespread impacts on the community and has demanded a rapid response from the aged care sector. System changes for infection control have been required including the use of personal protective equipment, lockdowns, visitor restrictions and changes to activities within aged care facilities. Even prior to COVID-19, the high physical and emotional demands of aged care work were recognised. Objective: This study sought to understand aged care workers' experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Using a pragmatic paradigm qualitative data about work experiences during COVID-19 was collected from people employed in different aged care organisations in a range of aged care roles and settings from multiple Australian states. Data was collected using focus groups and interviews conducted online between August-October 2020. Inductive thematic analysis was used to identify key themes in the data. results: Participants included 15 people working across a range of aged care roles including clinical, care and management staff and across both residential and community settings. Five themes were identified which characterised aged care workers thoughts about their jobs during the pandemic. These included intensified procedures and emotional demands, feeling undervalued and detached from the frontline, exposure of existing system deficiencies, recognising teamwork and increased confidence in technology. conclusion: Reflecting on aged care workers' experiences of COVID-19 highlights the need to better support workers and acknowledge their important role in caring for older Australians. This includes at an organisational level by providing supportive environments and access to online resources as well as at the community and policy level by recognising aged care workers as frontline workers. The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted existing systemic issues in the aged care sector that need to be addressed for the provision of quality aged care in Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic and into the future. Objective: To describe and analyse barriers and facilitators to managing uncertainty in nurses' clinical reasoning in post-anaesthesia care units. Background: The diagnostic process in complex clinical settings often involves uncertainty. This can bias clinical reasoning and compromise the safety of healthcare. Still, little is known about how nurses deal with uncertainty in their clinical practice. Study design and methods: This study employs a qualitative descriptive design. Fourteen nurses working at a post-anaesthesia care unit were selected through convenience sampling. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. The deductive analysis was undertaken based on the Theory of Reasoned Action. This study followed the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. Results: Two major themes emerged from the analysis: 'barriers' and 'facilitators'. Each major theme aggregated four themes: intention to perform the behaviour, attitudes, subjective norms, and external variables. Discussion: The perceptions of barriers and facilitators provide valuable insights into current and desired practices that can help minimise uncertainty in nurses' clinical reasoning in post-anaesthesia care units. They provide knowledge and future direction for clinical practice improvements by addressing motivations for reasoning behaviour. The need to create more nurse-friendly working conditions and reduce the cognitive and emotional impact of uncertainty was also identified. Conclusion: This study provides a comprehensive list of barriers and facilitators of uncertainty management in clinical reasoning based on nurses' perceptions. Recognising behaviours based on reasoned action is essential to manage uncertainty in nurses' clinical reasoning. Implications for research, policy, and practice: These findings can be used by different stakeholders to better manage uncertainty in healthcare settings. They are valuable resources for health professionals, researchers, and healthcare institutions attempting to improve health practices and enhance safety in health services. Objective: To explore the experiences of close family members when another family member is using methamphetamine and how the family member responds over time. Background: Methamphetamine use has widespread implications and harms for both people who use the drug and those that live with them. While there is a significant representation in the literature relating to family members of people who use drugs or alcohol, there are limited studies specifically considering family members experiences of methamphetamine use. Families have been shown to have both positive and negative impacts on people using drugs, but less is known on the impact on the family members themselves. Study design and methods: Multiple semi- structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 11 families (17 individual participants) from regional and metropolitan Western Australia over a 12-month period. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used in data collection and analysis. Results: Four main themes were identified: 1. the New Lifeguard describes family members' unplanned insertion into a new role and their rapidly changing experience of the person using methamphetamine. 2. Hit by the Wave demonstrates participants' experience of repeated and unpredictable impacts on their lives. 3. Life in the Ocean describes the groundlessness associated with changes to goals and family structure. 4. Learning to Surf illuminates the changing strategies employed over time, moving away from trying to fix the person, to participants managing their own wellbeing. Discussion: This study identified common aspects within the lived experience of close family members of people using methamphetamine and ascertained a commonality in the process of this experience. Significant impacts to all areas of life were reported, and distress was fluctuating and unpredictable in line with the cyclical nature of the drug use. Participant responses to these changes varied over time between resentment and trying to fix things, and acceptance and resilience, while gaining or maintaining like-minded supports. Conclusion: Understanding the issues faced by families around this unique drug is vital in providing informed interventions for this group. Family members experience a broad range of financial, social and health impacts and harms over a protracted length of time. They are often not the focus of available support and in adapting to these issues, will themselves seek support away from treatment services for the person using methamphetamine. Implications for practice Understanding the complex journey of families has a broad range of implications (and opportunities) for a variety of areas such as criminal justice, family support and child protection. There is an opportunity for these areas to consider broader and more specific supports and approaches, and to develop more appropriate, bespoke, and inclusive treatment for families of people using methamphetamine. Objectives: The study investigated how senior residential aged care staff perceived the purpose, function, impact and challenges of implementing a new role in their organisation for an unregistered care worker with a Bachelor of Dementia Care: the Dementia Care Support Worker. The role was piloted over two years in an Australian organisation with three aged care facilities to examine its potential to address gaps in service provision for people with dementia. Background: The residential aged care workforce is under pressure to care for residents with increasingly complex health conditions and where most care is provided by care workers. Presently no formal leadership role exists for care workers with specialised dementia knowledge in the aged care setting. Study design and methods: A qualitative descriptive approach was taken to explore senior staff members' perceptions of the role at two time points. Twenty-three semi-structured interviews held in July-August 2017 (n = 12), soon after role commencement, and in February-March 2019 (n = 11) were thematically analysed. Results: Three themes reflected senior staff members' expectations of the role: enhancing staff and management knowledge about dementia and dementia care practices; facilitating changes to improve care for residents living with dementia; and educating and supporting residents' families. Eighteen months later, participants felt the role was helping meet the need for improved care of residents with dementia, and staff understanding of dementia. They suggested communication and support structures to improve role effectiveness. Discussion: Staff were receptive to the establishment of the Dementia Care Support Worker role and felt it resulted in improvement in dementia care. Success was contingent on strong organisational support and resourcing. Conclusion: Improving dementia knowledge of care staff is an essential first step in driving care quality improvements. The Dementia Care Support Worker role for care workers has the potential to address knowledge needs and support improved care practices. Implications for research, policy, and practice: This research models how a new role might be configured for unregistered care workers with specialist dementia knowledge. Further research is needed to explore the establishment of such a role more widely in other organisations, to investigate whether it could provide a new career development pathway for care workers and improve the skills and capacity of the aged care workforce. Substantial policy changes would also be required to support role viability, such as around increased salary. Research which examines the impact of such roles on care outcomes would complement the findings. Objective: To evaluate the impact of using an academic electronic medical record program on first-year nursing students' confidence and skill in E-documentation after their hospital clinical placement. Background: Registered nurses are the largest user group of health information technology systems such as patient electronic medical records (eMR). As such, nurse undergraduate programs need to reflect contemporary practices and respond to emerging trends including digital technology, however integration of eMR learning has not occurred in many countries. To address this gap, a fit-for-purpose academic eMR simulation program was developed by nursing academics and a university Learning Design Department member. Study Design and Methods: A quasi-experimental study design, with self-administered pre-test, post-test surveys, was used with a convenience sample of all first-year nursing students at one regional university in NSW Australia in 2019 and 2021. Results: A total of 105 students completed the surveys (9.7% pre, and 7.4% post-test survey). Only 23% of respondents received training during hospital clinical placement on eMR and electronic observation charts. There was a significant increase in participant confidence and knowledge in documenting in electronic adult observational charts and notes after using the academic eMR program and attending clinical placement. Three themes emerged from the qualitative data: preparation for practice; more exposure increases confidence; and we can't forget the patient. Conclusion: Students acknowledged the need for repeated practice using an academic eMR program in university learning environments to ensure they would be work-ready. The identified challenge was the communication barrier (computer on wheels) and the potential negative impact on person-centred care and therapeutic communication. Implications for research, policy and practice: Further research is required to determine whether repeated practice with electronic documentation is best placed within a curriculum to increase learner confidence. Simulations that incorporate workstations on wheels should be tested to determine best practice for therapeutic communication. The presence of black sub-Saharan African nurses in Australian healthcare facilities is changing the face of the Australian nurse. Australia, like other developed countries, has been receiving migrant nurses from the African continent in a bid to reverse its critical nurse shortage. Literature has shown that globally, overseas qualified nurses of colour have encountered work challenges that have included racial discrimination. Study design and methods: A qualitative hermeneutical phenomenological approach was used. Eighteen nurses were purposively selected using personal invite and a snowballing technique. Data collection involved individual face to face interviews and a focus group discussion. Objective: This quality improvement project aimed to explore the experience of home care nurse managers implementing a general palliative approach to care. Implementation comprised several interlinking activities encompassing stakeholder engagement and an education program in the outer eastern region of a home care and nursing organisation in Melbourne, Australia, between September 2019 and December 2020. Background: High quality provision of community-based palliative and end-of-life care means people are much more likely to die at home, supported by family, friends and services. To achieve this, care staff must be adequately trained and supported, alongside a collaborative approach with other generalist and specialist providers. Study design and methods: This Case Study reports on the participant perspectives of the stakeholder engagement and education program. Focus groups and an interview were used to elucidate the experience of nursing and allied health professionals providing a general palliative approach in the community. The 2006 National Institute of Clinical Studies framework to identify barriers to best practice healthcare guided the development of focus group questions and the deductive analysis of data. Results: Seven Nursing Care Managers and one Social Worker participated in two online focus groups and one interview. Three overarching themes highlighted the value of tailored education in increasing staff knowledge and confidence, the factors for a successful generalist-specialist partnership, and the unique nature of the home care setting which requires accessible systems and processes. Discussion: This project supports assertions that generalist services can play a valuable role when a palliative approach to care is incorporated. It also underscores the importance of collaborative working partnerships between generalist and specialist services in providing quality community-based palliative care. Future research should examine the needs and perspective of clients, carers and families receiving a general palliative care approach in the community. Implications for research, policy and practice: Investment in developing the capacity and capability of generalist service staff to deliver palliative care is vital, particularly when caring for people in their homes. Although small, this study demonstrates that consideration should be given to embedding staff with specialist palliative care training within generalist organisations to drive and champion evidence-based palliative care provision, training, policies and procedures that meet the unique needs of mobile workforces. Future research should examine the effectiveness of different models and methods for education and generalist-specialist partnerships that meet the needs of mobile home nurses, particularly regarding long-term impact and sustainability. Background: Midwifery vacancies persist in small maternity units in Australian rural and private settings where midwives are expected to also care for general (non-maternity) patients when midwifery activity is low. Recruiting dual registered nurse/midwives over single registered midwives is preferred, as single registered midwives are seen as inflexible to assist with nursing work. Little is known about single registered midwives’ contribution to care of general patients in small maternity units. Objective: This scoping study aimed to consult single registered midwives and managers of single registered midwives to determine perspectives on single registered midwives’ contribution in small maternity units where the workload encompasses both midwifery and care of general patients, to inform further research. Study design and methods: This study used a qualitative description design. Two online focus groups were held, one containing three single registered midwives, the other three managers of single registered midwives. Similar questions were posed to each group about single registered midwives’ contribution to care in small maternity units. Data analysis was conducted collaboratively through coding and thematic categorisation processes. Results: Four major categories were found. Single registered midwives’ scope of practice concerning general patients is undefined; single registered midwives possess transferrable clinical skills applicable to general patients; practical, professional, and emotional barriers exist for single-registered midwives in small maternity units; and future research recommendations include scope of practice and workplace experiences. Discussion: Persistent midwifery vacancies are implicated in the closure of small maternity units to the detriment of childbearing families. Understanding the contribution of single registered midwives in small maternity units will inform future research and midwifery recruitment strategies to improve access to services. Conclusion: The experiences of single registered midwives working in small maternity units warrants further investigation. This scoping study contributes to the literature about single registered midwives’ experiences in small maternity units and suggests considerations for future research. Implications for research, policy and practice: Findings from this study provide information about the contribution of single registered midwives to small maternity units where there is an expectation to contribute to care of general patients in addition to midwifery. Future research into the experiences of single registered midwives working in these settings will generate information to inform recruitment strategies, potentially improving access to maternity care in small maternity units and may be used in the review of midwifery regulation and educational standards. Objective: To explore factors that can influence implementation of a nurse-led model of care for early medication abortion provision in the primary healthcare setting of regional and rural Victoria, Australia. Background: Global research indicates that an increased involvement of primary healthcare nurses in the delivery of early medication abortion provision has the potential to improve abortion access. In Victoria, access in regional and rural areas is restricted despite abortion being legal. A nurse-led early medication abortion provision model is feasible and can potentially improve the current situation. Study design and methods: An online three-round classic Delphi method was used. This paper reports the qualitative findings. Non-probability sampling techniques were used to recruit a panel of professional experts. Data from the three questionnaires were collected and analysed using thematic analysis. Factors influencing model implementation were categorised into the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation-Behaviour framework. Results: A total of 24 medical and other health professionals participated. They identified a range of factors that can hinder model implementation, including a lack of affordable medication abortion education, no remuneration for nurse-led early medication abortion provision, and concerns related to stigma and support. Discussion and conclusion: Understanding and addressing barriers to model implementation may enable the development of primary healthcare nurses' role in the delivery of early medication abortion provision to improve abortion access. Impact: To improve abortion access in Victoria's under-served regions, the potential of nurse-led early medication abortion provision was explored. Barriers to model implementation relate to a lack of medication abortion education and funding, professional support and stigma concerns. The study identified a range of support elements that would enable primary healthcare nurses to develop new roles and responsibilities in the delivery of medication abortion services. Aim: To describe for areas of improvement in the management of COPD and reduction in emergency department presentations in Queensland. Background: If current trends in the management of COPD do not change, the predicted 4.5 million Australians diagnosed with COPD by 2050 will place significant burdens on already over-utilised frontline ED services. Separately COPD is more costly per case than cardiovascular disease and is a more common presentation to Emergency Departments in any year than most types of cancer, road traffic accidents and heart disease. Study Design and Methods: This study used a qualitative thematic analysis methodology in which field convergent interviews were employed to generate data. Sixteen staff and nine patients across three major Southern Queensland Health acute care facilities participated in the study. The authors analysed interview data using qualitative thematic analysis. Results: This research has revealed several noteworthy concepts worthy of further exploration. Thematic analysis from both staff and patient interviews identified the following issues: 1. Nurse case management, 2. Integrated communication of patient assessment and history data, 3. Failure in COPD management, and 4. Knowledge utilisation among ED clinicians. Inherent among these key concepts is a primary goal of coordinated congruent COPD management that optimise a patient's functional status and quality of life, improving symptoms management, and avoiding recurrent exacerbations. Discussion: These insights into the experience of patients and hospital staff into the management of COPD provides valuable insight into current and desired practices that can help to minimise presentations to Emergency Departments. The findings of the research provide insights and future direction for improvements by addressing the inconsistency in disease management. The need for more accessible and consistent patient management and a more congruent centralised patient support framework was also identified. Conclusion: There is indication of support stemming from the voices of patients and hospital staff around the need for COPD case management to become the dominant method of care. Future research should consider the cost benefit and patient outcomes of the implementation of such a role and the avoidance of ED presentations. Implications for research, policy, and practice: The findings of this research imply a need to streamline the patient support and disease management discharged planning process by ensuring one health professional maintains ongoing education, support, and assessment to the patient. Objective: We report on a qualitative study of community nurse encounters with early relational trauma in parent-infant dyads. Background: Early relational trauma involves interactional or emotional disturbance in the parent-infant dyad. Earliest possible detection is needed to mitigate negative impacts on socio-emotional development, but early relational trauma is often challenging for practitioners to detect and respond to. Study design and methods: Maternal and Child Health nurses in Victoria, Australia received workforce training to address this. We interviewed 20 nurses both before and after they received specialist training, to understand their lived experiences in encountering client trauma and perceived changes to their professional confidence and competence post-training. The study comprised two areas of enquiry: i) a phenomenological analysis of nurses' lived experiences in encountering possible trauma; and ii) a grounded theoretical analysis of the context of trauma encounters at baseline, and perceived change in competence at follow-up. Results: Nurses who coped well when working with trauma maintained a level of emotional distance and were able to draw on a repertoire of well-established practice skills. The specialist workforce training resulted in clear gains in nurses' confidence and capacity to identify and respond to early relational trauma. Implications: Findings highlight a need for frontline services to provide specialist training and supervision in relational trauma and to cultivate cultures of communication and support. Such programs would optimally be deployed widely, to equip professionals with enhanced knowledge and confidence to create timely change in the face of early relational trauma. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine views and experiences of intensive care unit nurses and patients on the issue of protecting patient privacy. Background: Intensive care should be delivered to protect the privacy of intensive care patients because these patients experience a loss of personal identity and significant limitations in physical activity and emotional expression. Intensive care patients may not be able to dress themselves; they may not communicate effectively without glasses and hearing aids; they cannot control the environment; they may not govern their actions, and they may not advocate for themselves. For these reasons, nurses should assume a primary role to protect patient privacy because they spend many hours with them and witness patients' loneliness, pain, and death as their primary caregivers. Study design and methods: This is a qualitative study using a phenomenological method with data gathered through interview. The study was conducted with nurses (n = 14) and patients (n = 14) in the intensive care units of a state hospital in a metropolitan city in Turkey between 12 March 2018 - 4 October 2019. Data were collected from nurses and patients using semi-structured interview forms. Content analysis revealed categories, themes, and sub-themes. We have followed the Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ). Results: The categories explored in the study for both nurses and patients were the concepts of privacy, privacy protection and privacy violation. Some of the sub-themes were physical privacy, not sharing personal information, using screens or curtains, using aprons or sheets, insufficient number of nurses or excessive number of patients, and a lack of inspection and equipment. Conclusion: This study shows that the acquired information and the awareness of privacy, protection of privacy, and violations of privacy were adequate among both nurses and patients. Some of the nurses in the study stated that institution-related violations occurred because of the inadequate numbers of nurses to provide care to an exceedingly large number of patients. The implications for research, policy, and practice: Increasing awareness of nurses and patients on patients' rights and protection of privacy and violations of privacy and taking adequate measures to protect patient privacy increase both patient satisfaction and service quality in health. Objective: To describe development, implementation, and evaluation of an evidence-based online critical care nursing education program to upskill a registered nurse workforce in response to Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: As Australian federal, and state governments prepared for the possible influx of critically ill patients associated with COVID-19, initiatives were sought to assist frontline healthcare workers meet the complex care requirements of these patients. Study design and methods: A team of experienced acute and critical care nursing, medical practitioners, and education specialists, online and mobile learning specialists, and front-line workers were assembled. This team developed 10 online educational modules for rapid delivery and upskilling of registered nurses in Victoria, Australia. Nurses undertaking these modules were invited to complete a satisfaction survey. Survey questions were answered in Likert style or free text. Quantitative data were summarised descriptively, whilst freeform answers were explored for themes. Results: An online Critical Care Essentials course was launched in May 2020. In its first month 2,875 students had accessed this course. Course evaluation (n = 395 students) found over 92% responded favourably (Strongly Agree or Agree) to all 14 Likert style questions. Qualitative course feedback revealed four core themes: applicability, accessibility, engagement, and endorsement. Discussion: This innovative project demonstrated how a university department of nursing collaborated with government and industry partners to rapidly respond to develop and implement an online educational program. This program was immediately responsive to local, national, and international urgency. Obtained student feedback was overwhelmingly positive. However, future areas for development and evaluation are presented. Conclusion: An inter-professional and inter-organisational model is proposed for the development and implementation of future online programs. This focused online flexible learning, specific to care of critically unwell people with COVID-19, provides an approach to rapid upskilling of registered nurses. This approach appears favourably to its intended target audience. Furthermore, this program could be adapted for a national or international community. Objective: This study explored healthcare workers' experiences of transitioning infusions of natalizumab from hospital to a patient-centred model of home care. Background: Hospital in the home is one of the fastest growing healthcare delivery models. In Australia, intravenous infusions are rarely available at home for chronic disease patients, such as those with multiple sclerosis. A recent trial of natalizumab infusions at home for patients with multiple sclerosis required both the hospital and hospital in the home staff to consider the logistics of how this transition could be achieved safely. Study design and methods: This was a qualitative study using an exploratory-descriptive approach. Twelve participants from two main groups of healthcare workers participated in delivering natalizumab infusions during the six-month trial period and were subsequently interviewed about their experience. Participants were recruited from a hospital ambulatory care day unit and a Home Infusion Team from a private provider of home nursing care located in South Australia. The data was analysed thematically. Results: Three main themes were identified from the interviews: 'preparing for change', 'focussing on the patient', and 'enhancing professional support and relationships'. These findings demonstrated the importance of understanding healthcare workers' experiences of transitioning to a patient-centred model of care, from hospital to home infusion of natalizumab. Discussion: Flexibility and good management of logistics is necessary to maintain the standards of the health services, which highlights the need for training and professional support to facilitate quality home care. This may enhance workers' sense of professional confidence and trust and reduce stress when delivering the home model of care. Conclusion: Healthcare workers and patients worked to support one another, not only therapeutically but also logistically within collegial relationship and interdependent communications. Being flexible, communicating clearly and being willing to work together within the team, especially between the hospital in the home staff and the hospital staff, was demonstrated to be an important factor for the safe delivery of infusions at home. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the views and expectations concerning home healthcare from the perspective of older South Sami women and men in comparison with each other. Study design and methods: In this study, 56 older South Sami women (n=31) and men (n=25) were interviewed by telephone, using semi-structured interviews. Data was subjected to qualitative content analysis. Results: Our results revealed both similarities and some slight differences between the male and female participants. Both male and female participants expected the same care providers over time, in addition to expecting competence. Additionally, our female participants stressed that care providers should use time in their encounters with them as care receivers. For some female participants, this was related to competence. The findings also revealed that the care providers' cultural backgrounds were of importance to both female and male participants, even if female participants preferred care providers with a South Sami background to a greater extent. The male participants stressed that having care providers with a South Sami background could be of importance, but they were more concerned about the care providers' competence in the encounters with them as future care receivers. The main findings show that older South Sami women and men mostly have similar expectations of future home healthcare. Conclusions: Our results highlight that having the same care providers over time, with the necessary competence, is of importance to our participants. Additionally, participants prefer their care providers to have a South Sami background -- although not at the expense of competence -- and this was especially highlighted by the South Sami men. Implications for research, policy, and practice: Our study indicates that, if possible, in encounters with South Sami women and men, home healthcare services should facilitate for the same care providers over time and that they should be competent, preferably of a South Sami background, and speak South Sami if the care receiver has mastered the Sami language. Objective: This qualitative research project set out to explore how, and by what means, participation in group clinical supervision might impact nurses. It aimed to describe participant perceptions of the processes within a long running reflective practice group for intensive care nurses and explore these in relation to relevant theory. Background: Interpersonal aspects of care are central to the nursing role, however, the associated emotional labour can develop into moral distress, compassion fatigue and burnout. Australia's peak nursing and midwifery bodies have released a joint position statement on the importance of supervision for nurses. Group supervision interventions, such as reflective practice groups, mitigate stress, promote learning and support interpersonal aspects of nursing. Method: Twenty-two intensive care nurses from a reflective practice group that had been running for 10 years, participated in focus groups convened by an independent researcher. Thematic analysis identified key perceptions relating to process and outcomes. Results: Group identification, voluntary participation and skilled facilitation created an enabling environment for nurses to self-disclose. The sense of universality experienced by participants, along with increased empathy, enabled reflection and selfevaluation relevant to the group prototype of the ideal nurse. Authentic emotional expression was seen to provide respite from emotional labour, thereby regenerating resources for nurses to cope with job demands. Discussion: Key themes can be aligned to social psychology constructs of group identity, task interdependence and homogeneity, supporting earlier studies that suggest group cohesion is comprised of measurable factors. By developing and aligning with these constructs, the facilitator assists the group to establish a safe space whilst conceptualising and aspiring to a model for the professional and compassionate nurse. Conclusion: Social psychology constructs can help develop practice and research of group supervision for nurses. In clinical nursing settings, group identity is particularly salient and facilitator interventions should aim to strengthen this. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the occupational risks faced by operating room nurses, their working conditions and health problems, and the protective measures adopted. Background: Since operating rooms are high-risk environments, the nurses working in them are exposed to correspondingly greater health risks. Method: This qualitative descriptive study design involved 17 operating room nurses and was performed in a public hospital in Turkey. Data were collected by the author during face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured form constructed on the basis of the study aims. Theme establishment continued until new data emerged from the analysis of all interviews. Data were then subjected to qualitative content analysis. Results: Three main themes were determined in the study, worker safety, working conditions, and training. At interview, operating room nurses reported being exposed to several occupational risks, including radiation, sharp implements, long working hours, and working standing up. They also reported experiencing, or were anxious about encountering in the future, various health problems associated with these risks. They also identified activities associated with education and protective measures as inadequate. Discussion and conclusion: Several occupational risk factors in the operating room environment adversely affect the health of nurses working in the unit. We recommend that standards aimed at protecting against occupational risks be applied on a regular basis in order to preserve the personal health and safety of operating room staff. Implication for nursing and health policy: Nurses are responsible for the constant care of their patients under all conditions and environments but may face the risk of compromise of their own health as a result. Training, certification, and nursing policies aimed at protecting the health of employees in clinical settings should be implemented. What is already known about the topic? Objective: This study examined registered nurses' perspectives of being supportive of nursing students and providing them with learning opportunities when on clinical placements. Background: In Australia, as part of their three-year Bachelors degree, undergraduate nursing students undertake a minimum of 800 hours of clinical placement. During these clinical placement hours, nursing students are supervised by registered nurses who are required to be supportive of the students and provide them with learning opportunities. Study design and methods: This study used a grounded theory approach. In this qualitative study there were fifteen registered nurse participants. Thirteen participants were female participants and two were male. Participants were individually interviewed. Transcripts from these in-depth interviews were analysed using constant comparative analysis. Results: The major category, an added extra, emerged from this study. An added extra is about registered nurses' perception that having a student is an added extra to their daily duties. The major category an added extra is informed by three emergent themes. The first theme was time, the second theme was workload and the third theme was wanting recognition. Discussion: Registered nurses perceived that their workloads tend not to be taken into consideration when they have nursing students. The literature suggests that nursing students often miss out on learning opportunities when they are on clinical placement because registered nurses do not have additional time to effectively support students' clinical learning. Conclusion: Participants in this study believed being supportive of nursing students and providing them with learning opportunities was an added extra to their daily nursing duties. Findings revealed registered nurses want to be recognised for the extra time and effort they dedicate to students' learning. Implications for research, policy, and practice: When allocated nursing students, registered nurses should have their workloads adjusted because being supportive of nursing students and providing them with learning opportunities is time consuming. Further research is recommended to determine if patient workloads are being decreased when registered nurses are allocated nursing students. Aim: To review, test and refine standardised tools for nurses to initiate treatment summaries and care plans, and identify barriers and enablers to providing them. Background: This paper reports on a pilot study informed by the development of a Survivorship Framework in South Australia. Methods: Expression of interest was sought for adult medical oncology services to pilot standardised tools within existing services and resources. A quality improvement approach was used over three months with nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner candidates to obtain feedback, refine tools and resources, and identify barriers and enablers. Quantitative and qualitative data was recorded at each site using spreadsheets, at fortnightly meetings, and at a final debriefing. Content analysis was used to identify key themes in the context of barriers and enablers. Findings: Four medical oncology clinics in South Australia participated (three metropolitan, one regional). Forty-three consultations were delivered at three sites. Barriers included time to complete documentation, perceived knowledge and skills, re-orientation of clinics and referral pathways, competing service priorities and lack of administrative support. Enablers included interrelationships within and between pilot teams, supporting resources, and increased familiarity with tools. Discussion and conclusion: There is potential for nurses to initiate treatment summaries and care plans in the treatment setting with the use of standardised tools. Further refinements are needed to make the process less time burdensome, additional specialised training is needed to improve confidence of nurses to work in a wellness model, and numerous system challenges need to be overcome to improve overall feasibility of using standardised tools to provide survivorship support to patients. Lack of systems to populate information, and lack of referral processes to support survivorship discussions with patients are likely to limit the initiation of survivorship care in treatment settings in South Australia. Objective The aim of this study was to gain insights into the lived experience of a chronic disease, Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS). Selecting the most effective methodology to reflect the life span proved challenging. However, the life history approach proved to be a data-rich methodology for this study and is explored in detail in this paper as a qualitative nursing tool. Setting This study recruited participants through a state based Multiple Sclerosis organisation in the community. Subjects Thirteen participants living with RRMS were purposively recruited, ten female and three male, to discuss their lived experience. Participants were from diverse backgrounds and were at various stages of disease progression. Primary argument Ethnography and life history is an under-utilised methodology in nursing research. However, the life history approach was used effectively to collect data to explore the life trajectory of living with a chronic illness. Semistructured interviews and Braun and Clarke's (2006) method of thematic data analysis ensured a systematic, robust exploration of the lived experience of RRMS. The study developed eight key themes and over 70 subthemes, providing clarity into the experience of living with RRMS. Conclusion Employing the life history approach to living with RRMS reflected the ebbs and flows of life, themes intertwining and changing positions of importance according to life events, whether directly or indirectly related to RRMS. Life history proved to be an effective method to gain a greater understanding of chronic illness and although often overlooked in nursing research, may represent an excellent methodology choice for nurse researchers working in other areas of chronic illness. Objectives This paper aims to discuss and explore food security in the context of community health nursing, to provide insight about how frontline workers may identify whether their client is food secure. Design A qualitative descriptive design pilot study, using questionnaire and unstructured interviews. Setting Community health services across Sydney. Subject How community health nurses identify whether their client is food secure. Method Three community health nurses were interviewed and their responses recorded. Two student nurses participated in a focus group during professional work experience in community health. Findings/Results Although community health nurses claim they can identify whether their clients are food (in)secure, it remains unclear how they operationalise this claim, and indeed if they do, what the outcome may be for their clients' health determinants. Primary argument To raise awareness and stimulate discussion about food security as a social determinant of health, and whether community nurses have a role identifying client food security. Conclusion Food (in)security is increasingly recognised as a social determinant of health, with evidence that the prevalence of food insecurity is increasing in Australia. It is acknowledged that community health nurses have established professional relationships with their clients, and that food insecurity may be identified though formal and informal means. A more open discussion is required about food (in)security and potential ways in which it may be discussed in nonjudgemental, sensitive ways. Further investigation is required to interview community health nurses, in the context of their relationships with clients, how they establish whether food security is occurring and being maintained. Objective - This paper aims to provide an account of the first phase of a qualitative longitudinal study that explored the initial challenges men in nursing face to become registered. What is known is that men, a minority group within nursing, face the usual challenges of all new nurses in their quest to register as nurses. In addition, they have added pressures that hinder their quest due to being male. Primary Argument An Australian nursing shortage is looming due to nurses retiring from this female-dominate profession. Hence, the retention of men in nursing is an area requiring attention in order to support a sustainable workforce. Subjects and Setting Nine newly graduated male registered nurses participated. These nurses had recently commenced employment in the Western Australian metropolitan health region. Findings Individual face-to-face interviews produced the theme of role misconception with a major focus on male or nurse what comes first. This theme was derived from the categories of gender stereotyping and marginalisation. Conclusion This study suggests the need for a gender-neutral image when promoting nursing within and outside the professional environment. Furthermore, consideration for a professional title mutually accepted by both women and men in nursing, with the gender-neutral 'nurse' title preferred by the men in this study. Moreover to acknowledge that men in nursing will augment a technical savvy workforce that will complement emergent complex nursing practices, and enhance a more comprehensive Australian nursing workforce that will assist with meeting the health care needs of a diverse population. Objectives The Health Workforce Australia Clinical Supervision Support Program Discussion Paper (2010) highlighted the education deficits of health professionals responsible for the clinical supervision of students. This research aimed to develop, implement and evaluate a new education program for nurses to assist in the development of knowledge and attitude to supervise students whilst on clinical practicum. Design The impact of the ACS program was determined using a descriptive methodology involving the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data using a triangulation approach. This included the use of surveys, online reflections and interviews. Settings The ACS program was presented in both the metropolitan and regional areas of Western Australia. Subjects Participants (n=199) were from both the public and private health care sector working in a variety of nursing specialties within both the inpatient and community setting. Results Analysis of the data determined that participants improved their knowledge and attitude towards students and clinical supervision.
