SOCIAL services - Abstract
Health Social Work emerged at the beginning of the 20th century with Richard Cabot and Ida Cannon at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explain succinctly, firstly, the contributions of Richard Cabot and Ida Cannon, secondly, those of Nicasio Landa and Concepción Arenal, and finally, to show the similarities and differences found between the USA and Spain in the process of the emergence of proto-Health Social Work. A historical-systematic methodology has been used. The novelty of this contribution lies in the fact that it is the first time that Concepción Arenal has been considered as the first proto-health social worker in the history of Social Work in Spain.
