The article discusses gastrointestinal research with reference to 10th Taisho Symposium that was held in April 2003, in Shimoda, Japan. In this seminar, many specialists from different countries presented excellent surveys of their work related to gastrointestinal diseases. Although Helicobacter pylori has also been a frequent topic, few reports recognizing new breakthroughs have been also made. H. Pylori is easy to diagnose and eliminate, but problems will continue to arise if further advances in knowledge of its pathogenic characteristics are not forthcoming. The basic research is decreasing due to deteriorating economic conditions.
