In this paper we show how effective parameters such as effective binding energies can be defined for a proton in the combined nuclear-Coulomb potential, including also the target potential, in the case in which the proton is bound in a nucleus which is partner of a nuclear reaction. Using such effective parameters the proton behaves similarly to a neutron. In this way some unexpected results obtained from dynamical calculations for reactions initiated by very weakly bound proton halo nuclei can be interpreted. Namely the fact that stripping dominates the nuclear breakup cross section which in turn dominates over the Coulomb breakup even when the target is heavy at medium to high incident energies. We report on a study of exotic nuclei around doubly magic 132Sn in terms of the shell model employing a realistic effective interaction derived from the CD-Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential. The short-range repulsion of the latter is renormalized by constructing a smooth low-momentum potential, Vlow-k, that is used directly as input for the calculation of the effective interaction. In this paper, we focus attention on proton-neutron multiplets in the odd-odd nuclei 134Sb, 136Sb. We show that the behavior of these multiplets is quite similar to that of the analogous multiplets in the counterpart nuclei in the 208Pb region, 210Bi and 212Bi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use recently calculated next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) anomalous dimension coefficients for the moments of the F2 structure function in eN scattering, together with the corresponding two-loop Wilson coefficients, to obtain improved QCD predictions for non-singlet structure function. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN will start running 2008 producing proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV. Four large experiments will operate together with this accelerator: ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb. The main scientific goal of this project is to understand in detail the mechanism for electro-weak symmetry breaking and to search for physics beyond the standard model of particles. ATLAS and CMS are general purpose detectors designed for search and discovery of new physics, and optimized to search for Higgs and signals of supersymmetric matter (SUSY). Two-proton radioactivity was predicted more than 40 years ago. According to recent theoretical predictions, proton drip-line nuclei in the A=40–55 region were identified as the most promising candidates. The recent observation of two-proton radioactivity of 45Fe confirmed these predictions nicely. In the present paper, we will summarize experimental results for the decay of 45Fe, which include data from the 2002 discovery of this radcioactivity, but also new data. In addition, we will report on the first observation of 54Zn and its decay by two-proton radioactivity, the second case of this new decay mode. Finally, we will discuss tentative evidence for a small two-proton radioactivity branch for 48Ni. Recent measurements of the proton structure function F2 and determination of the structure function FL in e+p deep inelastic scattering (DIS) by the H1 Collaboration are summarized. The F2 results presented here extend the previous measurements at HERA into the Q2 region below 1 GeV2 by also using Initial State Radiation (ISR) events. High Power Proton Accelerators (HPPAs) are studied for several projects based on high-flux neutron sources driven by proton or deuteron beams. Since the front end is considered as the most critical part of such accelerators, the two French national research agencies CEA and CNRS decided to collaborate in 1997 to study and build a High-Intensity Proton Injector (IPHI). The main objective of this project is to master the complex technologies used and the concepts of manufacturing and controlling the HPPAs. Recently, a collaboration agreement was signed with CERN and led to some evolutions in the design and in the schedule. The IPHI design current was maintained at 100 mA in Continuous Wave mode. This choice should allow to produce a high reliability beam at reduced intensity (typically 30 mA) tending to fulfill the Accelerator Driven System requirements. The output energy of the Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ), was reduced from 5 to 3 MeV, allowing then the adjunction and the test, in pulsed operation of a chopper line developed by CERN for the Superconducting Proton Linac (SPL). In a final step, the IPHI RFQ and the chopper line should become parts of the SPL injector. A new evaluated nuclear data library has been created. The library consists of two sub-libraries for neutron and proton incident particles. The first version of neutron sub-library has been completed and described in the present paper. The library contains nuclear data for transport, heating, and shielding applications for 242 nuclides ranging in atomic number from 8 to 82 in the energy region of primary neutrons from 10-5 eV to 150 MeV. Data below 20 MeV are taken mainly from ENDF/B-VI (Revision 8) and for some nuclides, from the JENDL-3.3 and JEFF-3.0 libraries. The evaluation of emitted particle energy and angular distributions at the energies above 20 MeV was performed with the help of the ALICE/ASH code and the analysis of available experimental data. The total cross sections, elastic cross sections, and elastic scattering angular distributions were calculated with the help of the coupled channel model. The results of the calculation were adjusted to the data from ENDF/B-VI, JENDL-3.3m or JEFF-3.0 at the neutron energy equal to 20 MeV. Proton and neutron data as well as photon data are necessary in various intermediate energy applications. To meet these requirements, many groups in the world continue some activities concerning nuclear data evaluation in the energy range above 20 MeV, which is the upper limit of conventional general-purpose evaluated nuclear data files. In this paper, reviewed is brief history of intermediate energy nuclear data development as well as Pearlstein’s contribution for it. In order to design accelerators or to analyze experimental data, commercially or noncommercially programs for tracking particles have been developed and used. However the reliabilities of those programs are not clear, especially if the beam quality is as high as that required for future applications. Therefore, for the purpose to study the reliabilities and to improve their accuracy, we planed to benchmark those programs. As a first step, the calculations were carried out in the both condition of free space and homogeneously accelerating-field by using three own codes and three commercial codes (MAGIC, PARMELA, and GPT). After termination of the LEAR facility in 1996 and the restriction of the CERN antiproton program to Trap experiments, stored antiprotons at low and medium energies are no longer available for experiments. FAIR at GSI (Darmstadt) will provide intense stored antiproton beams in less than a decade from now. This has renewed the interest in polarized antiprotons originally proposed for LEAR. In August 2007, an International Workshop was organized at the Cockcroft Institute (Daresbury) and methods to polarize stored antiprotons were discussed. In June 2008, a Heraeus Seminar at the Physikzentrum in Bad Honnef dealing with the same subject took place. The Coulomb equilibration time scale among various particle species behind a fast collisionless shock can be much larger than the dynamical time scale in a supernova remnant or CME. Ultraviolet and optical emission line profiles can be used to measure proton, electron and ion temperatures. A new model for the effective two-body nucleon-nucleon interaction has been recently successful in calculation of ground state properties of spherical, doubly closed shell nuclei from 16O to 208Pb [1] and nuclear matter and neutron star properties [2]. The application of the density dependent finite range separable monopole (SMO) interaction has been now extended to axially symmetrical deformed nuclei [3]. In the present paper we report on HF+BCS calculation of ground-state properties of even-even spherical and deformed N = Z and proton-rich nuclei between the N = Z and the proton-drip line for 28≤Z≤50. The SMO results shown include total energy surfaces and deduced shapes, single-particle energies, two-dimensional distribution of nucleon densities, charge radii and two-proton separation energies. Understanding the phenomenon of one-proton emission is crucial for addressing the question of the location of the limits of observable nuclei. Much of the current understanding of this radioactive decay process has been developed and refined through measurements of proton emitters above Z = 50, where ∼30 proton-emitting nuclei have already been discovered and studied. However, despite the great experimental and theoretical efforts over recent years, some important questions remain unanswered. The Atomic mass evaluation (AME) provides the reliable resource for the values related to atomic masses. Since the publication of the latest version of AME in 2003, many developments for atomic mass determination have been done and important results changed significantly our knowledge. A preliminary version of AME was released in April 2011, and an official version is foreseen to be published in early 2013. In hadron physics, experiments using hadronic probes may shed light on open questions on the structure of hadrons, their interactions that are subject to the strong force and on the symmetries of nature. Therefore a major focus of the physics program studied at the COoler SYnchrotron COSY of the Forschungszentrum Jülich is the production of mesons and hyperons in hadron- hadron scattering with the aim to investigate relevant production processes, interactions of the participating particles as well as symmetries and symmetry breaking. The COoler SYnchrotron COSY at Jülich accelerates protons and deuterons with momenta up to 3.7 GeV/c covering hadron physics in the light quark sector. The availability of the beam cooling systems allow precision measurements, using polarized proton and deuteron beams in combination with polarized Hydrogen or Deuterium targets. Due to the excellent experimental conditions at COSY single- and double-polarization measurements can be performed with high reaction rates. With the operation of the recently installed WASA-at-COSY apparatus, high-statistics studies aiming at rare decays of η and η′ are effectively turning COSY into a meson factory. This contribution summarizes the ongoing physics program at the COSY facility, using the detector systems ANKE, WASA and COSY-TOF highlighting a few selective recent results and outlining future developments. The research at COSY also provides a step towards the realization of FAIR with studies on spin manipulation and polarization build-up of protons in polarized targets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the matrix elements necessary to evaluate the half-life of some neutrinoless double beta decay candidates in the framework of the microscopic interacting boson model (IBM). The spectroscopy of fission fragments, obtained by the 18O+208Pb fusion-fission reaction at 85 MeV bombarding energy, has been performed with the Euroball IV γ-array. High-spin states in many neutron-rich Se, Br, Kr and Rb of the 78Ni region nuclei have been identified for the first time. Several physical aspects which govern the nuclear structure in this mass region are underlined thanks to the new results. Among those, empirical values of the residual proton-neutron interactions have been extracted for the πf5/2xvd5/2 and πp3/2xvd5/2 configurations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proton beams in medical applications deal with relatively thick targets like the human head or trunk. Therefore, relatively small differences in the total proton stopping power given, for example, by the different models provided by GEANT4 can lead to significant disagreements in the final proton energy spectra when integrated along lengthy proton trajectories. This work presents proton energy spectra obtained by GEANT4.8.2 simulations using ICRU49, Ziegler1985 and Ziegler2000 models for 19.68 MeV protons passing through a number of Al absorbers with various thicknesses. The spectra were compared with the experimental data, with TRIM/SRIM2008 and MCNPX2.4.0 simulations, and with the Payne analytical solution for the transport equation in the Fokker-Plank approximation. It is shown that the MCNPX simulations reasonably reproduce well all experimental spectra. For the relatively thin targets all the methods give practically identical results but this is not the same for the thick absorbers. It should be noted that all the spectra were measured at the proton energies significantly above 2 MeV, i.e., in the so-called “Bethe-Bloch region”. Therefore the observed disagreements in GEANT4 results, simulated with different models, are somewhat unexpected. Further studies are necessary for better understanding and definitive conclusions. Low-energy antiprotons are the ideal and perhaps the only tool to study in detail correlated quantum dynamics of few-electron systems in the femto and sub-femtosecond time regime. Unfortunately cooled beams of antiprotons with the necessary beam quality and luminosity are not yet available and cannot be provided with present scientific infrastructures. In order to pave the way for a next-generation low-energy antiproton facility, challenging developments in both, storing and imaging techniques have been launched at MPI-K. A novel ultra-low energy storage ring (USR) to be integrated at the proposed facility for low-energy antiproton and ion research (FLAIR) is being developed to provide electron-cooled beams of antiprotons and possibly highly charged ions in the energy range between 300 and 20 keV/q, maybe even approaching the sub keV regime. To allow for kinematically complete investigations for a variety of different collision processes, a reaction microscope shall be integrated in the ring thus achieving unprecedented luminosities. In this contribution, the present status of experiments in comparison with theory is highlighted and the layout of the USR as well as of the in-ring and an external single-pass reaction microscope is presented. Control of the radial profile of trapped antiproton clouds is critical to trapping antihydrogen. We report detailed measurements of the radial manipulation of antiproton clouds, including areal density compressions by factors as large as ten, achieved by manipulating spatially overlapped electron plasmas. We show detailed measurements of the near-axis antiproton radial profile, and its relation to that of the electron plasma. We also measure the outer radial profile by ejecting antiprotons to the trap wall using an octupole magnet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The astrophysical s-process is responsible for the synthesis of many of the nuclei heavier than iron through a series of low-energy (n,γ) reactions and β-decays. For nuclei for which the neutron capture and β-decay rates are comparable, the branching is crucial for tests of s-process models. Direct measurements of (n,γ) cross sections for these nuclei are extremely challenging due to the inherent difficulties associated with radioactive targets and the low intensity of available neutron beams. The surrogate reaction technique can be used to circumvent these difficulties by creating the same compound nucleus through light-ion reactions on a stable target. The cross section can be determined by combining optical model calculations for the formation of the compound nucleus with the measured exit channel probability for γ-ray emission. We have collected data to determine the low-energy (n,γ) cross section for the unstable nucleus 153Gd by bombarding a stable 154Gd target with protons from the 88-Inch Cyclotron at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to create the desired 154Gd* compound nucleus. The STARS/LiBerACE silicon and clover germanium detector arrays were used to detect γ-rays in coincidence with the scattered protons. Additional cross section measurements using 156Gd and 158Gd targets will be compared to direct measurements of the (n,γ) cross sections for 155Gd and 157Gd. Two recent issues realted to nucleosynthesis in early proton-rich neutrino winds are investigated. In the first part we investigate the effect of nuclear physics uncertainties on the synthesis of 92Mo and 94Mo. Based on recent experimental results, we find that the proton rich winds of the model investigated here can not be the only source of the solar abundance of 92Mo and 94Mo. In the second part we investigate the nucleosynthesis from neutron rich bubbles and show that they do not contribute to the nucleosynthesis integrated over both neutron and proton-rich bubbles and proton-rich winds. We propose a scheme for including final state interaction effects in the Glauber model for nucleon removal reactions. This scheme can faciltate the extraction of astrophysical factors from proton removal reactions of weakly bound nuclei as an indirect method for nuclear astrophysics, as well as the study of unbound neutron rich nuclei. The systematics of the πh11/2xνh11/2 and πh11/2xνs1/2 isomeric configurations were studied for the odd-Z N = 77 isotones near the proton dripline. The spin and parity of Iπ = 8+ and 5- were deduced for the isomers in 140Eu and 142Tb. No evidence for the expected 1+ ground-state was found in the 144Ho decay data. The proton emission from 146Tm was restudied and the spin and parity values of Iπ = 10+ and 5- were established for 146mTm and 146gsTm, respectively. The interpretation of the observed decay properties and structure of the proton-emitting states was made by accounting for deformation and proton and neutron coupling to the core excitations. The role of triaxial deformation in proton emitting nuclei is studied with the nonadiabatic quasiparticle method. Exact calculations are done using this formalism which takes fully into account the pairing residual interaction and the coupling to the daughter nucleus states. Results from our calculations for the proton emitters 161Re and 185Bi are presented and the influence of triaxial deformation on the decay and structural properties of these nuclei are discussed. We predict that the half-lives for proton emission from these nuclei have a weak dependence on triaxial deformation, especially in the non-adiabatic case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an experiment performed at the NSCL/MSU A1900 separator the decay of 45Fe was investigated in detail. Two-proton radioactivity channel was clearly identified and for the first time the correlations between two protons emitted from the nuclear ground state were determined. The comparison with a theoretical model indicates the genuine three-body character of this decay and sheds light on the shell structure of this exotic nucleus. The β decay channels of 45Fe, followed by one-, two-, and three-proton emission, were also identified. The β3p decay channel was observed for the first time. The half-life of 45Fe was found to be 2.6±0.2 ms and the 2p decay branching ratio is 70±4%. The HERMES experiment, installed in the 27.5 GeV HERA lepton ring at DESY/Hamburg, is used to study the spin structure of the nucleon. To get information about the orbital angular momentum Lq of quarks, exclusive DIS reactions are investigated. The HERMES Collaboration installed a new Recoil Detector to upgrade the existing spectrometer to improve the study of hard exclusive processes, detecting recoil protons with low momentum. Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering is the main process to be studied. The HERMES Recoil Detector consists of three subcomponents inside a superconducting magnet that provides a longitudinal superconducting magnetic field of 1 Tesla. Isomeric states in the nuclei along the rapid proton capture process path are studied by the projected shell model. Emphasis is given to two waiting point nuclei 68Se and 72Kr that are characterized by shape coexistence. Energy surface calculations indicate that the ground state of these nuclei corresponds to an oblate-deformed minimum, while the lowest state at the prolate-deformed minimum can be considered as a shape isomer. Due to occupation of the orbitals with large K-components, states built upon two-quasiparticle excitations at the oblate-deformed minimum may form high K-isomers. At a certain finite neck radius during the descent of a fissioning nucleus from the saddle to the scission point, the attractive nuclear forces can no more withstand the repulsive Coulomb forces producing the neck rupture and the sudden absorption of the neck stubs by the fragments. At that moment the nucleons, although still characterized by their pre-scission wave functions, find themselves in the newly created potential of their interaction with the separated fragments. Their wave functions become wave packets with components in the continuum. The probability to populate such states gives evidently the emission probability of nucleons at scission. We study both polarized and unpolarized proton structure functions in the kinematical region of large Bjorken x and four-momentum tranfer of few GeV2, characterized by the phenomenon of parton-hadron duality between the smooth continuation of the deep inelastic scattering curve and the average of the nucleon resonances which dominate this region. A new measurement is presented of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering based on data taken by the H1 detector at HERA. For the first time the cross section dependence is reported on the momentum transfer squared at the proton vertex, t. The measurement of azimuthal cross section asymmetries from deeply virtual Compton scattering on the proton and deuteron at HERMES is discussed. In particular results on the longitudinal target spin asymmetry as a function of the azimuthal angle and the Mandelstam t are given. One of the signature features of Raman’s work was the love and exploitation of nuclear systematics as a tool to discern interesting structural phenomena and to understand better the evolution of structure with nucleon number. Such a tool, properly used, can be extremely powerful, especially when data are correlated with a physically meaningful variable that yields simple and compact trajectories. It can reveal trends that reflect basic elements of nucleonic interactions, it can reveal nuclei with special symmetries, or anomalous nuclei, and it can point to possibly incorrect measurements. We focus on several uses of correlations of nuclear data, illustrating the above ideas. Particular aspects are proton-neutron interactions, quadrupole collectivity, the search for phase transitional behavior and critical point nuclei, and a new mapping of collective nuclear structure across large parts of the nuclear chart, leading to a discovery of an “arc of regularity” characterizing certain nuclei while others nearby in Z and N exhibit chaotic spectra. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reaction γp→π0π0p has been measured using the TAPS BaF2 calorimeter at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron accelerator in the beam energy range from threshold up to 820 MeV. Close to threshold, chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) predicts that this channel is significantly enhanced compared to double pion final states with charged pions. The strength is attributed dominantly to pion loops in the 2π0 channel - a finding that opens new prospects for the test of ChPT. Our measurement is the first which is sensitive enough for a conclusive comparison with the ChPT calculation and is in agreement with its prediction. The data are also in agreement with a calculation in the unitary chiral approach. In the second resonance region, a recent model interpretation of new GRAAL data claimed a dominance of the P11(1440)→σN reaction process. We present very accurate invariant mass distributions of π0π0 and π0p systems, which are in contrast to the σN intermediate state and which show a dominance of the Δπ intermediate state. Two-proton removal in 17Ne at energies from 60 to 710 A MeV in the carbon target is studied in the eikonal approximation of the Glauber model. The excitation of the 15O core fragment is taken into account. In the experiment performed at GANIL (France) we have studied the β-delayed particle emission of the Tz = -3/2 33Ar and Tz = -2 32Ar proton emitters. Protons are emitted within the wide window (around 10 MeV) of excited states in 33Cl and 32Cl feeding the ground and the excited states of 32S and 31S. Proton-γ coincidences have been used to determine the B(GT) strength in this region of excitation energy allowing us to reasign proton transitions to higher excited state with respect previous studies. The main motivation to revisit these nuclei is the increase of granularity and sensitivity of the charged particle detectors and the high sensitivity and large angular coverage obtained by the use of the CLOVER detectors. We investigate the structure of the nuclei 18Ne and 11Li within a three-body model using Faddeev equations with the hyperspherical adiabatic expansion method. The 18Ne system is described as an inert 16O core and two protons. Besides reproducing the experimentally known bound states, two tentative states with Jπ = 3+ and 1- are predicted close to the two-proton separation threshold. We also find several low-lying resonances based on a 3- excited state of the core. The 11Li nucleus is treated using a 9Li+n+n model. In this case, the lack of information of the 9Li+n spectrum only allows us to obtain the ground state with enough accuracy. The calculated three-body wavefunction has been used to develop a simplified two-body model of the 11Li nucleus (dineutron model). This model is found to reproduce very well the recent data for the electric transition probability, B(E1). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
