To explore alcohol consumption among older Norwegian adults with symptoms of cognitive decline, assess the agreement between the reports of older adults and their next of kin regarding a person's alcohol consumption, and explore clinical and sociodemographic variables associated with agreement. Alcohol consumption was measured among 3608 older adults consulting specialist health care for symptoms of cognitive decline. Agreement between the participant and their next of kin regarding the participant's alcohol consumption was assessed with a weighted kappa (κ). A logistic regression analysis for hierarchical data was used to explore variables associated with agreement. Both the participants and their next of kin reported that more than 20% of the participants consumed alcohol 1–3 times a week, and that approximately 10% consumed alcohol four or more times a week. The agreement between the participant's and their next of kin's report regarding the participant's alcohol consumption was high (κ =.852), and variables associated with agreement were no cognitive decline, not drinking alcohol during the last year or ever as reported by the participant, and low agitation scores on a psychiatric assessment. This paper found alcohol consumption among older adults with symptoms of cognitive decline that was above the national average in Norway. This is also the first paper to demonstrate that a next of kin can be a reliable source of information regarding older adults' alcohol consumption. Objectives:This paper reports two related analyses of verbal material from sevenLiving Well with Dementiagroups: the first examines changes in the verbal behaviours of participants across the course of the sessions in all seven groups; while the second contrasts therapist behaviour in two groups. Methods:In the first analysis, recordings of three sessions from each group were transcribed and participant descriptions of dementia were analysed using the Markers of Assimilation of Problematic Experiences of Dementia (MAPED) rating procedure. In the second analysis, therapist behaviour in weeks 2 and 8 from two groups (F and G) was analysed using the Hill Counsellor Verbal response rating scale. Inter-rater reliabilities for the two sets of ratings were ‘good’ and ‘very good’, respectively. Results:For the MAPED ratings, a five by four contingency table was analysed using chi-squared, which indicated a highly significant change in assimilation. There were significant higher levels of level 1 and 2 markers in the first two sessions and level 4 for sessions 5 and 6. Facilitators used significantly more direct guidance and information giving behaviour in the second session at Location F compared to Location G. Conclusions:The results suggest that important changes occurred in the way that dementia was described across the seven LivDem groups: this includes both reductions in the avoidance of direct references to dementia after the first two sessions, as well as an increase in ‘insight’ statements. Subjective memory concerns are common in older adults and may prompt the use of web-based cognitive screening. Websites which purport to provide memory screening are numerous and can influence health behaviours; however there is currently limited evidence regarding their validity. The current research aims to assess potential user's attitudes and motivations regarding online cognitive screening and to evaluate the preliminary evidence for the feasibility and validity of two subjective online cognitive measures. The sample consisted of community-based older adults, 30 with, and 30 without, memory concerns. Participants rated their likelihood of their accessing online cognitive screening and gave rationales. Participants’ performance on objective pen and paper measures of cognition was compared to performance on subjective online screening measures. The majority of participants indicated they would access online cognitive screening. A total of 100% of participants were able to use the online tools without assistance. None of the online measures was positively associated with the pen and paper screening measures. Anxiety and depression were significantly associated with subjective memory concerns. This study provided no supporting evidence for the validity of either subjective online screening measure assessed. Anxiety and depression were significantly associated with subjective cognition, indicating that, although they may not predict objective cognition, complaints about memory in older adults should be taken seriously by health professionals. Objectives:Subjective memory complaints (SMC) are common in older people and previous research has shown an association with mood problems, such as depression and anxiety. SMC form part of the criteria for many definitions of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but there is controversy over whether they should be included as they may be related more strongly to mood than to objective cognitive impairment. This study aims to clarify the relationship between mood and SMC in people with MCI. Method:This paper reports an analysis of data from the Medical Research Council Cognitive Function and Ageing study. Structured interviews were conducted with community-dwelling older people to assess a range of aspects of cognitive functioning and mood. Data from two time points approximately 24 months apart were used in this analysis. At baseline, participants without dementia or severe cognitive impairment were categorised into three groups according to cognitive status. Mood was investigated by assessing symptoms of anxiety and depression which were defined using a diagnostic algorithm. Associations were tested using logistic regression and chi square analyses. Results:A clear association was shown between SMC and mood, both cross-sectionally and over time. The relationship between our two competing definitions of MCI suggested that mood problems were more strongly related to the presence of SMC than objective cognitive impairment. Conclusion:SMC may be a function of anxiety and depression rather than being related to objective cognitive function. This questions whether SMC should be included in definitions of MCI. Objectives: Loneliness and social isolation are two important health outcomes among older adults. Current assessment of these outcomes relies on self-report which is susceptible to bias. This paper reports on the relationship between loneliness and objective measures of isolation using a phone monitoring device. Method: Phone monitors were installed in the homes of 26 independent elderly individuals from the ORCATECH Life Laboratory cohort (age 86 ± 4.5, 88% female) and used to monitor the daily phone usage for an average of 174 days. Loneliness was assessed using the 20-item University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness scale. A mixed effects negative binomial regression was used to model the relationship between loneliness and social isolation, as assessed using the total number of calls, controlling for cognitive function, pain, age, gender, and weekday. A secondary analysis examined the differential effect of loneliness on incoming and outgoing calls. Results: The average UCLA Loneliness score was 35.3 ± 7.6, and the median daily number of calls was 4. Loneliness was negatively associated with telephone use (IRR = 0.99, p < 0.05). Daily phone use was also associated with gender (IRR = 2.03, p < 0.001) and cognitive status (IRR = 1.51, p < 0.001). The secondary analysis revealed that loneliness was significantly related to incoming (IRR = 0.98, p < 0.01) but not outgoing calls. Conclusions: These results demonstrate the close relationship between loneliness and social isolation, showing that phone behaviour is associated with emotional state and cognitive function. Because phone behaviour can be monitored unobtrusively, it may be possible to sense loneliness levels in older adults using objective assessments of key aspects of behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to examine the psychometric properties and construct validity of the interpersonal needs questionnaire (INQ) using a modified three-point response scale for oral administration with older adults. Methods: In-home interviews were conducted with 269 participants aged 60 and older who were completing an eligibility interview for a randomized control trial. The INQ was administered orally, as were measures of social support, death and suicide ideation, and meaning in life. Results: A confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated acceptable fit, with all of the items loading significantly onto the associated latent variable of thwarted belongingness or perceived burdensomeness. Construct validity of the measure was supported through an examination of discriminant validity using constructs hypothesized by the interpersonal theory of suicide to be related to the measured constructs, including social support and social integration for thwarted belongingness, social worth and death ideation for perceived burdensomeness, and meaning in life and suicide ideation for both. Conclusion: The INQ yields reliable and valid scores of thwarted belongingness and burdensomeness when administered orally using a shortened response scale with older adults. Objective:The association between exposure to stressful life events (SLEs) and late-life depression is well-documented. However, the role of resilience as a buffer against the adverse mental health effects of SLEs in late life has not been convincingly demonstrated. In this paper, the moderating effect of resilience in the relationship between SLEs and depressive symptomatology in older Chinese adults is investigated. Method:A population sample of 385 community-dwelling older Chinese adults aged ≥60 years responded to questionnaires on resilience (Connor–Davidson resilience scale), depressive symptomatology (Geriatric Depression Scale, GDS-15) and SLEs. Results:Increased numbers of SLEs (β = 0.343,p< .001) and lower levels of resilience (β = –0.137,p< 0.001) were significantly associated with higher levels of depressive symptomatology. There was a significant interaction of resilience and number of SLEs on depressive symptomatology (p= 0.003). The sense of personal competence and optimism was the principal underlying resilience dimension moderating the relationship for both the young–old (aged 60–69) and the old–old (aged 70 and above). Conclusion:The finding of significant interaction supported the role of resilience in moderating the adverse effect of SLEs in terms of depressive symptoms among older Chinese adults. Objectives: Reminiscence is a popular intervention for seniors, but, with mixed evidence supporting its efficacy, questions have been raised about the mechanisms underlying improvement. The present paper addresses this question by investigating the degree to which health effects depend on the development of a shared sense of group identification. This is examined in the context of traditional story-based reminiscence as well as novel forms of song-based reminiscence.Method: As the focus of a manualized intervention, 40 participants were randomly assigned to secular song (n = 13), religious song (n = 13), or standard story reminiscence (n = 14) groups. These were run over six weeks with cognitive performance, anxiety, and life satisfaction measured before and after the intervention. Measures of group fit were included to examine whether social identification contributed to outcomes.Results: No evidence of change emerged over time as a function of intervention form alone, but analysis of identification data revealed significant interactions with the type of reminiscence group. Specifically, initial fit with the story reminiscence group was associated with enhanced cognitive outcomes and greater life satisfaction, while fit with the religious song reminiscence group was associated with greater life satisfaction and less anxiety.Conclusion: These findings show that group identification is a key moderator through which reminiscence promotes health outcomes. Objectives: The vascular depression hypothesis posits that cerebrovascular burden contributes to the development of depression symptoms in late life. Building on work that suggests that vascular depression is a prodrome for frailty, this paper tests a theoretical framework that vascular depression symptoms are an early marker of a broader pattern of decline characterized by more frailty symptoms and shortened lifespan, and that vascular depression symptoms predict mortality through frailty. Methods: The sample was drawn from the Health and Retirement Study and included 1361 stroke-free women over the age of 80. Data were included from six biannual waves from 1998 to 2008 (waves 4–9). A vascular depression symptomatology variable was based on Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) scores and number of cerebrovascular risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, cardiac disease, and smoking). Frailty was measured based on wasting, slowness, weakness, fatigue, and falls. Vascular depression and frailty symptoms were modeled using slope and intercept terms. Mortality was modeled using a discrete-time survival term. Results: The data supported the proposed model (RMSEA = 0.051; CFI = 0.971; X2 = 234.84, p < 0.001). Higher vascular depression symptom slope and intercept scores significantly predicted higher frailty slope and intercept scores, respectively. Frailty intercept scores significantly predicted mortality. The vascular depression symptoms indirectly predicted mortality through frailty symptoms. A second model testing the competing hypothesis – that frailty symptoms lead to vascular depression symptoms and indirectly to mortality – was not supported by the data. This study analyzed the conspiracy mentality of informal caregivers for older persons compared to non-caregivers and whether this association was dependent on age. The sample was collected randomly from a population-based online panel (forsa.omninet) and represents individuals aged ≥40 years from Germany. In total, 3022 participants were questioned about conspiracy mentality (Conspiracy Mentality Questionnaire), informal care provision (N = 489 informal caregivers of older adults), and sociodemographic background. Data assessment took place between 4th and 19th March 2021 and the questions referred to the time between December 2020 and March 2021. No significant differences were found between informal caregivers and non-caregivers. A significant interaction effect was found, indicating a decrease of conspiracy mentality among non-caregivers and an increase among informal caregivers with higher age. After stratifying by gender, this effect was found only among female informal caregivers. Middle-aged informal caregivers had a lower, and older-aged a higher, susceptibility to conspiracy theories during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to non-caregivers. The results indicate that providing care could be protective among middle-aged individuals, whereas older informal caregivers may benefit from interventions to reduce susceptibility to conspiracy theories and the associated risks for health and wellbeing. Loneliness is an important risk factor for mental and physical health over the life span. Little is known about psychosocial predictors and consequences of loneliness apart from social network characteristics. One important factor that may both prevent from, but also be affected by loneliness, is perceived autonomy. In the present study, we investigated the longitudinal association of loneliness and autonomy over four years among participants of the Swedish Health, Aging and Retirement Transitions in Sweden (HEARTS) study (n = 5718, age 60–66 at baseline). We used a latent curve model with structured residuals, which distinguishes within- and between-person associations and includes cross-lagged parameters. Higher levels of autonomy at baseline were associated with lower levels of loneliness, and increases in autonomy were associated with decreases in loneliness. When individuals felt more autonomous than usual, they also reported less loneliness. However, the cross-lagged paths were not significant, which means that autonomy did not predict loneliness over time on the within-person level, and loneliness did not predict autonomy over time. Our findings show that higher autonomy was related to lower loneliness on different analytical levels, but the direction of effects is unclear. Loneliness is seen as an important problem, contributing to serious health problems. As a baseline measurement for the evaluation of a community project aimed at reducing loneliness in Rotterdam, loneliness was measured, as well as potential correlates. This article describes models of social and emotional loneliness among older adults. This study was conducted among 3,821 randomly selected community dwelling citizens of 65 years and older. Loneliness was measured by using the Jong-Gierveld loneliness questionnaire/scale. As potential correlates demographic, health and psychological and social variables were included. Data were subjected to multiple hierarchically regression analysis. Emotional loneliness was reported by 60% and social loneliness by 47% of the sample. Women were more emotionally lonely than men , while men reported more social loneliness than women. Emotional social support and quality of life were strongest in predicting emotional loneliness and social capital in the neighbourhood, companionship and instrumental support were strongest predictors for social loneliness. Demographic variables predicted variability in emotional loneliness. The strength of the correlates differed between the two dimensions of loneliness. In the design of interventions to prevent and reduce loneliness among older adults, strategies should be developed aimed at the specific dimensions of loneliness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many caregivers of patients with neurodegenerative disease experience physical and psychological strain, which is associated with negative health outcomes. Caregiver strain may be partly attributable to negative emotional responses (e.g.of resentment) to the behavioral, cognitive, and physical changes associated with patients' disease. The philosopher Peter Strawson observed that in dealing with people who have neurological impairments, we often choose to suspend such emotional responses, adopting what he labeled the "objective attitude," though this may come at the expense of our relationships with them. In this study, we assessed the mediating effect of caregivers' adoption of the objective attitude on caregiver strain and relationship closeness in the setting of disease progression. Caregivers of patients with neurodegenerative disorders (n = 215) completed the Clinical Dementia Rating, Relationship-Closeness scale, Caregiver Strain Index, and a novel questionnaire assessing the adoption of the objective attitude. A structural equation model assessing associations among these variables demonstrated good fit (χ2 (88)=164.621, p < 0.001; CFI = 0.929, RMSEA = 0.064.) and showed that adoption of the objective attitude mediated the association between disease progression and relationship closeness (total β= −0.233, 95% CI: −0.351, −0.113; indirect β= −0.483, 95% CI: −0.602, −0.364; direct β = 0.250, 95% CI: 0.117, 0.384), but did not mediate the association between disease progression and caregiver strain (total β = 0.323, 95% CI: 0.234, 0.412; indirect β = 0.089, 95% CI: −0.027, 0.206; direct β = 0.153, 95% CI: −0.043, 0.349). For future work, we propose longitudinal measurements of these constructs to test the directionality of associations and consideration of how models for caregiver support can draw upon interdisciplinary insights. The purpose of this study was to validate the Chinese version of the Brief Aging Perception Questionnaire (B-APQ) for older persons with chronic disease living in Taiwan. This study recruited older patients with chronic diseases from outpatient departments of a medical center in southern Taiwan. Five steps were used to develop the Chinese version of the B-APQ, including assessment of item quality, testing of the original model by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), establishing the new model by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and CFA, testing the correlation between the new model and criterion instrument, and evaluating the reliability. A total of 415 participants completed the survey. The structure of the original version was not suitable for the Taiwanese elderly. We developed a Chinese version of the B-APQ from outpatient dimensions and one additional item that accounted for cultural differences (for a total of 18 items). The indicators of construct validity were Chi-square (387.79), GFI (0.91), AGFI (0.88), RMSEA (0.07), and SRMR (0.054). For the convergent validity, the correlation coefficient was −0.07–0.39 for the Physical Activity Scale and -0.07–0.71 for the scale of the World Health Organization Quality of Life. The Cronbach's alpha was 0.86–0.91. The Chinese version of the B-APQ has good validity and reliability and is suitable for the measurement of the aging perceptions of older persons with chronic diseases in Taiwan. Objective: To investigate whether referrals to memory services in London reflect the ethnic diversity of the population. Methods: Memory service data including referral rates of BAME was collected from London Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). Results: The expected percentage of BAME referrals using census data was compared against White British population percentages using the chi squared test. We found that within 13,166 referrals to memory services across London, the percentage of people from BAME groups was higher than would be expected (20.3 versus 19.4%; χ2 = 39.203, d.f. = 1, p < 0.0001) indicating that generally people from BAME groups are accessing memory services. Seventy-nine percent of memory services had more referrals than expected or no significant difference for all BAME groups. When there were fewer referrals then expected, the largest difference in percentage for an individual ethnic group was 3.3%. Conclusions: Results are encouraging and may indicate a significant improvement in awareness of dementia and help seeking behaviour among BAME populations. Prevalence of dementia in some ethnic groups may be higher so these numbers could still indicate under-referral. Objective: General practitioners (GPs) play a major role in the assessment of dementia but it is still unrecognized in primary care and its management is heterogeneous. Our objective is to describe the usual practices, and their determinants, of French GPs in this field. Methods: GPs’ characteristics and practices when facing cognitive decline were collected through a telephone interview and a postal questionnaire. A descriptive analysis of all study variables was conducted. The study of quantitative explanatory variables was done by testing the equality of means and the choice of qualitative variables was based on the chi-square independence test or Fischer test. Results: Hundred two GPs completed the study. GPs were in majority men, working in urban areas. Mean age was 54.4 years old. GPs’ feeling of confidence and self-perception of follow-up of national recommendations is linked with their practices. Performing a clinical interview to assess cognitive impairment is linked with good communication skills. GPs feel less confident to give information about resources for dementia. The main reason alleged for underdiagnosis is the limited effectiveness of drug therapy. Conclusions: This study underlines the importance of GPs’ feeling of confidence when managing cognitively impaired patients with dementia, and the need of increasing training in the field of dementia, which could improve the awareness of GPs about diagnosis and available resources. Socioemotional selectivity theory posits that changes in time perspective over the lifespan are associated with distinct goals and motivations. Time perspectives and their associated socioemotional motivations have been shown to influence information processing and memory, such that motivation-consistent information is more likely to be remembered and evaluated more positively. Objective:The aim of this study was to examine the effect of motivation-consistent mental health information on memory for and evaluations of this information, as well as help-seeking attitudes and intentions to seek mental health services. Method:We randomly assigned an Internet-based sample of 160 younger (18–25) and 175 older (60–89) adults to read a mental health information pamphlet that emphasized time perspectives and motivations relevant to either young adulthood (future-focused) or late adulthood (present-focused). Participants completed measures assessing their time perspective, memory for and subjective evaluation of the pamphlet, and help-seeking attitudes and intentions. Results:The time perspective manipulation had no effect on memory for pamphlet information or help-seeking attitudes and intentions. There was, however, a significant interaction between time perspective and pamphlet version on the rated liking of the pamphlet. Conclusion:Although motivation-consistent information only affected perceptions of that information for present-focused (mostly older) individuals, this finding has important implications for enhancing older adults’ mental health literacy. Objectives:In old age, the will-to-live (WTL) is one of the most important indicators of subjective well-being (SWB). However, few studies to date have focused on WTL. In these studies, WTL has mainly been evaluated via indirect questions concerning factors that may influence peoples’ WTL, or by measures directed to patients with specific diseases. The current study describes the development and psychometric properties of a new WTL scale. Method:The five-item WTL scale was developed on the basis of previous qualitative and quantitative research, and was evaluated in a longitudinal study of a random sample of 868 adults, aged 75+. Results:Confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) models were computed showing that each of the five items contributed significantly to measurement of a single WTL latent factor. Goodness-of-fit statistics were in ideal parameters for these CFA models at each point of data collection. Moreover, temporal analyses indicated that the relative contribution to measurement for each item was equivalent across time, attesting to reliability of measurement and the construct validity of WTL measurement. Concurrent validity was supported by significant positive correlations between WTL and life satisfaction, happiness, self-rated health, morale, self-rated aging, and, as expected, by inverse associations of WTL with depression and loneliness. Conclusion:The results of these analyses indicate that the WTL scale is a valid and reliable instrument. Considering the importance of the WTL concept in late life, and the psychometric properties of the WTL scale, we recommend it for use in research and practice related to older adults’ SWB and end-of-life care. Objectives:As the opposite end of the continuum from social integration, social isolation may put individuals at a greater risk of poor mental health. Conceptualizing living alone as an objective and structural indicator of social isolation and loneliness as subjective perceptions of social isolation, the present study hypothesized that the relation between living alone and depressive symptoms would be mediated by the feelings of loneliness. Using older Korean Americans as the target population, the mediation model was examined in consideration of the contextual factors such as demographics (age, gender, education, perceived income, and length of stay in the USA), health (chronic conditions and functional disability), and general social integration (size of social network and community social cohesion). Method:Date were drawn from surveys with 209 older Korean Americans in Central Texas (Mage= 69.6, SD = 7.5). Multivariate regression models of depressive symptoms were entered in the following order: (1) demographics, (2) health, (3) living alone, (4) social network/community social cohesion, and (5) loneliness. The mediation effect of loneliness in the relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms was separately examined using the bootstrapping method. Results:Loneliness was found to mediate the relation between living alone and depressive symptoms (indirect effect = 1.03, 95% CI = .05–2.08). Conclusion:The results suggest that subjective perceptions of loneliness may explain the mechanism through which objective social isolation presents risks for depressive symptoms in older Korean Americans. Objectives:Several risk and protective factors are associated with changes in cognitive functioning in aging adults – including physical health, depression, physical activity, and social activities – though the findings for participation in social activities are mixed. This study investigated the longitudinal association between social participation and two domains of cognitive functioning, memory and executive function. A primary goal of our analyses was to determine whether social participation predicted cognitive functioning over-and-above physical health, depression, and physical activity in a sample with adequate power to detect unique effects. Method:The sample included aging adults (N= 19,832) who participated in a large, multi-national study and provided data across six years; split into two random subsamples. Unique associations between the predictors of interest and cognitive functioning over time and within occasion were assessed in a latent curve growth model. Results:Social participation predicted both domains of cognitive functioning at each occasion, and the relative magnitude of this effect was comparable to physical health, depression, and physical activity level. In addition, social participation at the first time point predicted change in cognitive functioning over time. The substantive results in the initial sample were replicated in the second independent subsample. Conclusion:Overall, the magnitude of the association of social participation is comparable to other well-established predictors of cognitive functioning, providing evidence that social participation plays an important role in cognitive functioning and successful aging. Objectives:Research suggests that being older and homeless is associated with unique characteristics and potential barriers to improved living conditions. Additional research is needed to better understand the vulnerabilities associated with this population. The purpose of this study was to identify characteristics related to aging and homelessness. It was hypothesized that older adults would exhibit more vulnerability compared to other age groups related to health, social support proximity, occupational perceptions, and recent living conditions prior to seeking assistance at an emergency shelter. It was also hypothesized that these age-related characteristics would predict the amount of time that individuals resided in the emergency shelter. Method:A cross-sectional sample of young, middle-aged, and older homeless adults seeking shelter at two emergency homeless shelters was utilized for this study. Data included information obtained during a structured interview after participants arrived at the shelter and the number of days that were spent at the shelter. Results:Older adults were more likely to exhibit several characteristics (i.e., poorer health, being further from social support, longer durations of homelessness, lack of employment area, prior residence types, and mental health treatment) potentially contributing to and/or recovering from homelessness. Duration of homelessness, reports of having no career area, and age were predictive of the amount of time spent at the shelter. Conclusions:The various characteristics that differentiate older homeless populations (e.g., health, social support, homelessness duration, and employment) could create potential barriers to overcoming homelessness that should be considered when serving this population. Background: Promoting adaptation, improving well-being and maintaining an optimal quality of life (QOL) is an important aspect in dementia care. The purpose of this study was to identify determinants of QOL in young onset dementia, and to assess differences in QoL domains between people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Methods: In total 135 persons with AD and 58 persons with FTD were included from two prospective cohort studies. QOL was assessed with the proxy reported quality of life in Alzheimer's disease questionnaire (QoL-AD). Possible determinants were explored using multiple linear regression and included sociodemographic variables, diagnosis, dementia severity, disease awareness, neuropsychiatric symptoms, met and unmet needs and hours of personal and instrumental care. Differences between QOL domains in people with AD and FTD were calculated using Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: Lower QOL was associated with more depressive symptoms, lower disease awareness, and a higher amount of needs, both met and unmet. People with AD scored lower on the memory and higher on the friends' subscale. No differences were found for the other items. Objectives: Research shows that dispositional mindfulness is associated with metrics of overall well-being, with enhanced emotion regulation potentially underlying these salutary effects. However, the role of regulation strategy use remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined age-variant associations between dispositional mindfulness, emotion regulation strategies, and emotion dysregulation. Method: Self-report data were collected from 50 older and 50 young adults on mindfulness, emotion dysregulation, and recent strategy use. For the current study, we examined if cognitive reappraisal, experiential suppression, and thought avoidance use mediated the association between mindfulness and emotion dysregulation. Results: Thought avoidance, but not reappraisal or suppression strategies, partially mediated the association between mindfulness and emotion dysregulation. Age group moderated the observed mediation, such that for young adults, lower mindfulness was associated with greater use of thought avoidance, and in turn with greater emotion dysregulation (e.g., difficulties engaging in goal-directed behavior in the face of strong emotions). Conclusion: The current cross-sectional study suggests that reduced avoidance of thoughts may partially explain the relationship between trait mindfulness and enhanced emotion regulation, with this mediational pathway being stronger for young compared with older adults. Objectives: The primary objective of this work is to report the observed changes in psychological well-being in a sample of long-term medically hospitalized patients, after attending a cognitive stimulation program. The secondary aim is to determine if the observed changes were related to previous cognitive level. Methods: Inclusion criteria for study participation were to be a long-term care hospital inpatient, to be 65 years old or older, and to be cognitively preserved or with mild cognitive impairment. A total of 176 participants were included and distributed in two groups: Cognitive Stimulation Group (N = 123) and Non-Cognitive Stimulation Group (N = 53). Measures were applied just before the beginning of the program and just when it finished, two months later. Participants of the Non-Cognitive Stimulation Group were re-assessed again after two months. Results: No differences were found between the two groups in the measures assessed at baseline. After treatment, participants of the Cognitive Stimulation Group improved significantly more in psychological well-being (p <.001) than the ones of the Non-Cognitive Stimulation Group. When unimpaired and mild cognitively impaired participants of the Cognitive Stimulation Group were studied separately, both groups improved their psychological well-being, but the unimpaired experienced a greater effect. Conclusion: Cognitive stimulation plays a role in the improvement of psychological well-being of elderly medically hospitalized patients unimpaired or with mild cognitive impairment. Objectives: To prospectively investigate the impact of transitions in informal caregiving on emotional well-being over two years in a large population study of older people. Methods: Information on provision of unpaid care in 2004/2005 and 2006/2007 was available for 6571 participants in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Three well-being domains were also assessed on each occasion: life satisfaction (measured with the Satisfaction with Life Scale); quality of life (assessed with the CASP-19 scale); and depression symptoms (measured using the Centers for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale). Multivariable analyses of the impact on well-being of two-year caregiving transitions (caregiving entry and caregiving exit, or continued caring) were conducted separately for spousal/child carers and carers of other family/non-relatives. Results: Compared to non-caregiving, entry into spousal/child caregiving was associated with decline in quality of life (B = −1.60, p <.01) whereas entry into caregiving involving other kin relations increased life satisfaction (B = 1.02, p <.01) and lowered depression symptoms (B = −0.26, p <.05). Contrary to expectations, caregiving exit was related to increased depression in both spousal/child (B = 0.44, p <.01) and non-spousal/child (B = 0.25, p <.05) carers. Continued spousal/child caregiving was also related to decline in quality of life (B = −1.24, p <.05). Other associations were suggestive but non-significant. Conclusion: The emotional impact of different caregiving transitions in later life differs across kin relationships; notably, spousal and child carers' well-being was consistently compromised at every stage of their caregiving career over the two-year study period. Introduction:Global increases in life expectancy are expected to continue, with accompanying physical and mental well-being challenges specifically for older people living in residential care settings. Objective:The aim of the study was to investigate the association between mental well-being and social capital of older residents (60+ years) in an urban residential care facility in South Africa. Method:A descriptive survey was conducted with 103 residents living in a residential care facility in an urban environment in South Africa. The social capital framework from the Canadian Policy Research Initiative, the WHO-5 well-being index, the Kessler-6 measure of psychosocial distress, the OSLO-3 Social Support Scale and the Australian Bureau of Statistics Indigenous Health Questionnaire were used to develop the questionnaire. Results:The WHO-5 showed moderate ratings of mental well-being for the standard scoring (>13) (62, 82.7%), but lower levels when using ‘no negative ratings’ (36; 50.6%). Significant differences in the primary network size, average closeness, self-efficacy and social support as well as the ability to confide in primary network was shown between residents with mentally well and unwell ratings. Logistic regression showed that the strongest predictor for mental well-being was participation in activities outside of the residence and having a primary network. Objectives:Memory complaints are present in adults of all ages but are only weakly related to objective memory deficits, raising the question of what their presence may indicate. In older adults, memory complaints are moderately related to negative affect, but there is little research examining this relationship in young and middle-aged adults. This study examined whether memory complaints and negative affect were similarly related across the adult lifespan and in adults with varying levels of objective memory performance. Method:The sample included 3798 healthy adults, aged 18 to 99, and was divided into five groups: young, middle-aged, young-old, old-old, and oldest-old adults. Participants completed questionnaire measures of memory complaints and negative affect (neuroticism and depressive and anxiety symptoms), in addition to lab measures of objective memory. Results:Using structural equation models, we found that the relationship between memory complaints and negative affect was moderate in all the age groups, and there was no evidence for moderation by objective memory. Objectives:This study applied a multidimensional model on a continuum to examine successful aging (SA) and investigated whether SA is associated with biomedical and psychosocial–demographic factors among Hong Kong Chinese near-centenarians and centenarians. Method:A cross-sectional data analysis was performed on a geographically representative sample of 120 near-centenarians and centenarians with an age range of 95–108 years. We developed an integrated and cumulative Successful Aging Index (SAI) based on participants’ performance in four dimensions: (1) physical and functional health (PF), (2) psychological well-being and cognition (PC), (3) social engagement and family support (SF), (4) economic resources and financial security (EF). To examine the criterion validity of SAI, we conducted a multiple binary logistic regression with interviewer-rated health. A multiple regression model was ran to investigate the independent biomedical and psychosocial–demographic correlates of SAI. Results:Results show that only 5.8% of participants attained SA in all four dimensions. PF had the least achievers, whereas the proportion was the highest in PC. SAI was significantly associated with interviewer-rated health and a high level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Living with family or friends, high level of optimism, fewer diseases, and barriers to social activities were independent predictors of SAI score. Conclusion:In the light of the lack of consensus on the constituents and assessment of SA especially among very old adults, our findings add to the extant literature by underscoring the importance of the multidimensional nature and the utility of an integrated and cumulative-based assessment of SA at the extreme of longevity. Objectives:This study examines how living arrangements are associated with suicidal ideation for older adults in South Korea, which has the highest suicide rate among OECD countries, and a particularly high suicide rate for older persons. Methods:Analyzing a sample of 5795 women and 3758 men aged 65 and older from a nationwide representative cross-sectional data-set, we examined how many older adults think about suicide over a one-year period, why they think about suicide, and whether living arrangements are associated with suicidal ideation. Results:About 1 out of 12 respondents in our sample reported suicidal ideation. While women and men did not differ in the prevalence of suicidal ideation, women attributed their suicidal feelings to health problems, while men attributed theirs to economic difficulties. Logistic regression results indicated that living arrangements are associated with suicidal ideation for men but not women. Older men living with a spouse were less likely to have suicidal ideation than older men with other living arrangements (i.e., living alone, living with children without spouse, living with spouse, and others). Conclusions:Our results highlight the importance of living arrangements to older men's suicidal ideation. Objectives:The current practice of prescribing psychotropic medication for the management of dementia-related behavioral disturbances is under substantial debate. Using Pearlin's stress process model as theoretical underpinning, the aim of this investigation is to identify caregiver and care recipient characteristics as predictors of anxiolytic, antipsychotic, and antidepressant use among community-dwelling dementia patients. We hypothesized that caregiving burden and patient characteristics, particularly behavior disturbances and pain, would be positively associated with psychotropic medication use. Methods:Data for this exploratory, cross-sectional study were drawn from the baseline assessment of the Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health II trial. Only participants with full baseline information were examined (N= 598). Caregiver characteristics, such as confidence managing problematic behaviors, and care recipient characteristics including pain, problem behaviors, cognitive impairment, and functional impairment, were examined in relation to care recipient psychotropic medication use. Results:Contrary to our hypothesis, behavioral disturbances and burden associated with these disturbances were not significantly associated with psychotropic use. Rather, caregiver characteristics such as race and overall vigilance, and care recipient characteristics such as cognitive status, functional status, and pain were significantly associated with the use of psychotropic medication. Findings differed by class of medication. Conclusion:These exploratory findings suggest the utility of a holistic approach to understanding the factors associated with pharmacotherapy among community-dwelling elders with dementia. Significant associations between caregiver characteristics and care recipient psychotropic medication use suggest that educating caregivers in non-pharmacologic strategies hold promise for a more balanced biopsychosocial approach to maintaining dementia patients in the community. Objective: This study examined the moderator role of intergenerational family capital on the relationship between community social capital and life satisfaction of older Chinese adults. Method: The data were derived from a quota sampling of 372 older adults aged 60 and above, who were interviewed at four districts in Hong Kong in 2011. Multiple group analysis was employed to examine the proposed model. Results: For the low family capital group, community social capital was found to be a significant predictor of life satisfaction, even when the well-known covariates were controlled. However, the association between community social capital and life satisfaction was statistically non-significant among the high family capital group. Discussion: The findings highlighted the interplay between community social capital and intergenerational family capital, which supported community social capital replacement theory in understanding the mechanism linking social capital to life satisfaction in older age in a Chinese context. Community social capital can play a compensatory role in maintaining the mental health of older people. Objectives: Despite the increasing number of lesbian and gay older adults, research geared towards health and well-being of this population is limited. Many lesbian and gay seniors experience health disparities and are at risk for poor health outcomes. The aims of this study were to gather in-depth information on the concerns of lesbian and gay elders with respect to aging and care needs. Method: The sample included 124 gay men and lesbian women aged 50+ years. Data were gathered via focus groups and questionnaires. The focus groups addressed: (1) concerns about aging in the LGBT community, (2) barriers to needed support and services, (3) concerns about caregiving and (4) needed programs for lesbian and gay seniors. Results: Concerns expressed about aging included: lack of financial security, lack of family or social support, fears about the lack of someone to provide needed care, and discrimination in healthcare or service communities. Participants also indicated concerns about being alone and vulnerable and a need for resources and support programs, specifically for lesbian and gay older adults and for lesbian and gay caregivers. Conclusions: These findings suggest needed areas of support and programs for older gay men and lesbian women. Objective: Taking a socioecological perspective, this study assessed the relationship of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational factors to positive aspects of caregiving (PAC) for 642 dementia caregivers by racial/ethnic group from the baseline data of the multisite Resources for Enhancing Alzheimer's Caregiver Health II (REACH II) intervention. Methods: Nine intrapersonal indicators, 4 interpersonal indicators, and 12 organizational indicators were used. Blocked-multiple regression analyses by three racial/ethnic groups were computed to examine significant factors related to PAC among caregivers after controlling for memory and behavioral problems. Results: Data showed a significant difference in PAC and significantly different indicators of PAC by racial/ethnic group. Hispanic caregivers reported the highest level of PAC while White participants showed the lowest scores on the measure of PAC. Education, marital status, and using formal transportation services were significant predictors for PAC among Hispanic caregivers; age, education, caregiving duration, and received social support were significant for PAC among African American caregivers; and sex, education, being a spousal caregiver, satisfaction with social support, using help from homemaker and visiting nurse services, and participating in support groups were significant among White caregivers. Conclusion: Findings indicate that PAC varies significantly across the three studied racial/ethnic groups of family caregivers and that intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational factors relate uniquely to PAC. Objectives: Our aims were to explore prevalence of anxiety among patients admitted to departments of geriatric psychiatry for treatment of various diagnoses and to examine how often anxiety was registered as a previous or ongoing diagnosis. Method: In all, 473 patients admitted to one of five departments of geriatric psychiatry were included in a quality register and examined according to a standardized protocol. The Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) was used to measure anxiety during the first week after admission. Diagnoses were made at discharge. Results: Using a cutoff on the GAI of 8/9, the prevalence of anxiety for the following diagnostic groups was depression 65.3%, psychosis 28%, dementia 38.8% and mania 33.3%. Of 24 patients with a primary diagnosis of anxiety, 66.7% scored above 8 on the GAI. Of 236 patients with a GAI score above 8, only 22 (9.3%) were reported to have a comorbid anxiety disorder by the treating psychiatrist. In a multiple regression analysis, we found that the severity of depression (beta 0.585, p < 0.001), being female (beta 0.096, p 0.028) and the use of antipsychotic drugs (beta 0.129, p 0.006) and anxiolytic drugs (beta 0.129, p 0.005) were associated with a higher GAI score. Conclusion: Anxiety is common in geriatric psychiatric patients, regardless of the primary diagnosis. Our findings suggest that anxiety is often a hidden comorbidity in various psychiatric disorders. Objectives: The vascular depression hypothesis, which supposes a causal relation of vascular risk factors and vascular disease with depression, has not been definitively accepted. Inconsistent findings may be due to different clinical presentations of depression in older people with and without a clear history of stroke. We therefore aimed to investigate the association between vascular pathology, with and without previous stroke, and different symptom domains of depression. Method: For our study, we used baseline data of 378 people aged 60 years and older with a current depression who participated in the Netherlands Study of Depression in Older persons (NESDO), an observational (multicentre) cohort study. Using all information on vascular pathology and risk factors, three classes were operationalized: a first class of depressed older people with previous stroke; a second class of depressed older people with cardiovascular and peripheral arterial diseases, but without stroke; and a third class of depressed older people with no vascular disease. Results: The depressed older people with previous stroke were characterized by more 'motivational' symptoms, which distinguished them from other depressed older people. Inclusion in this stroke group was also associated with having increased prevalence of hypertension, smoking more cigarettes, and lower alcohol consumption. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the 'vascular depression' connotation should be reserved for depressed (older) patients with vascular pathology and evident cerebral involvement. Objectives: Two studies investigated the possibility that repressive coping is more prevalent in older adults and that this represents a developmental progression rather than a cohort effect. Study 1 examined repressive coping and mental health cross-sectionally in young and old adults. Study 2 examined whether there was a developmental progression of repressive coping prevalence rates in a longitudinal sample of older adults. Method: Study 1 compared younger adults (mean age 27.6 years) with older adults (mean age 74.2 years) on inventories of mental health and well-being and examined the prevalence of repressive coping in both samples. Study 2 re-tested a sample of older adults previously reported following an interval of 7 years. Results and conclusion: Study 1 - in line with previous research older adults demonstrated greater psychological wellbeing and had a higher prevalence of repressive coping than younger adults (at 30% vs. 12% respectively). Study 2 - the data indicated that the prevalence of repressive coping rose from 41% at the first time of testing (2002) to 56.4% at the second testing interval (2009). These results suggest that repressive coping may increase across the lifespan in certain individuals and continue to increase throughout older adulthood. Furthermore, this increase in repressive coping with age appears to result in better well-being in those older adults who become repressive copers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Describe the development of a competent workforce committed to providing patient-centered care to persons with dementia and/or depression and their caregivers; to report on qualitative analyses of our workforce's case reports about their experiences; and to present lessons learned about developing and implementing a collaborative care community-based model using our new workforce that we call care coordinator assistants (CCAs). Method: Sixteen CCAs were recruited and trained in person-centered care, use of mobile office, electronic medical record system, community resources, and team member support. CCAs wrote case reports quarterly that were analyzed for patient-centered care themes. Results: Qualitative analysis of 73 cases using NVivo software identified six patient-centered care themes: (1) patient familiarity/understanding; (2) patient interest/engagement encouraged; (3) flexibility and continuity of care; (4) caregiver support/engagement; (5) effective utilization/integration of training; and (6) teamwork. Most frequently reported themes were patient familiarity - 91.8% of case reports included reference to patient familiarity, 67.1% included references to teamwork and 61.6% of case reports included the theme flexibility/continuity of care. CCAs made a mean number of 15.7 (SD = 15.6) visits, with most visits for coordination of care services, followed by home visits and phone visits to over 1200 patients in 12 months. Objectives: Disabled, homebound individuals tend to suffer both chronic pain and depression; however, low-income, homebound older adults have been underexposed in pain and depression research. We examined the extent of pain frequency, intensity, and interference; the relationship between pain and depressive symptoms; and prescription analgesic use and its association with use of antidepressant and anxiolytic medications among these older adults. Method: The data came from the baseline assessment of 215 homebound individuals aged 50+ who were referred to a clinical trial of depression treatment. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to examine the research questions. Results: Almost 87% (n = 186) of the participants reported having had chronic pain in the preceding three months. Of the pain reporters, the mean frequency, intensity, and interference of pain were 8.65 ± 2.05, 7.71 ± 2.10, and 7.80 ± 2.82, respectively, on a 1-10 scale, and 61% were taking a prescription analgesic. Analgesic users and nonusers did not differ in depressive symptoms and in pain frequency and intensity, but analgesic users reported higher pain interference than nonusers (8.22 ± 2.46 vs. 7.14 ± 3.22; t = 2.44, df = 184, p = .016). Pain frequency and interference were significantly associated with depressive symptoms, and pain interference was significantly associated with analgesic use in multivariate analysis. Anxiolytic medication use was also correlated with analgesic use. Conclusion: The findings underscore the significant pain-related problems in these vulnerable individuals and the need for recognizing and treating both pain and depression more effectively using both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions. Objectives: To compare locus of control and coping strategies in older persons with and without depression. Method: This cross-sectional study included 144 depressed in-patients from seven psychogeriatric hospital units, and 106 community-dwelling older persons without depression. All participants were 60 years and older. Locus of control was assessed by a 17-items self-report questionnaire with six response categories. Coping strategies were assessed by a 26- items self-report questionnaire with five response categories. For analytical purposes, age (<75 years vs. ⩾75 years), level of education (<10 years vs. ⩾10 years) and general medical health (poor vs. not poor) were categorized. Results: In linear regression analysis, controlling for demographics, health, and social variables, the depressed in-patients showed a higher external locus of control orientation and a less frequent use of problem-focused coping strategies compared with the non-depressed group. No differences in use of emotion-focused strategies were found between the two groups. Conclusion: Compared with the non-depressed old persons, the depressed hospitalized older persons were characterized by perceptions of less personal control, and less use of problem-focused strategies, what also might have brought positive alterations into their situation. Objectives: Well-being has been conceptualized as a two-dimensional construct that includes both hedonic and eudaimonic components. To date, existing measures of well-being may not adequately capture both of these components for older adults, and limited literature has explored whether the two constructs can be integrated into one factor to measure well-being in this population. Method: This study examined the factor structure of the 11 well-being items from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), a nationally representative panel study of Medicare recipients in the US. Using data from the 2011 wave, we divided the community-dwelling sample into two random subsamples, testing our theory in sample 1 (n = 3305) and examining the replicability of the solution in sample 2 (n = 3297). Results: We conducted confirmatory factor analyses using a correlated uniqueness approach to account for the frequency and negatively worded method effects. The findings from sample 1 indicated that the single factor structure was a superior fit to the data, and the solution was confirmed by sample 2 [x2 (33) = 85.002, p < .001, RMSEA = 0.022 (90% CI = 0.016- 0.028), CFI = 0.993, TLI = 0.989, WRMR = 0.831]. Conclusion: Findings suggest that although the hedonic and eudaimonic components of well-being may be conceptually distinct, they are highly correlated in the NHATS well-being measures and should be measured as a single construct. Objectives:To explore the association of experiencing death, trauma, and abuse during childhood with depressive symptoms and quality of life at mid-life among incarcerated men and to understand how current social support and coping strategies mediate the impact of childhood trauma histories on mental health. Methods:Study participants were 192 male inmates in a maximum security prison. Participants completed measures of adverse childhood experiences related to death, trauma, and abuse, and depressive symptoms and quality of life. Data were analyzed using multiple mediation modeling. Results:Men who reported having experienced adverse childhood experiences reported more depressive symptoms and lower quality of life than their counterparts. The results showed that in models both unadjusted and adjusted for age, race, education, number of years served, and whether the inmate had a life sentence, the association between adverse childhood experiences and quality of life were partially explained by the total of the indirect effects (point estimate = −.5052; CI.95= −1.0364, −.0429 and point estimate = −.7792; CI.95= −1.6369, −.0381), primarily via social support. However, the associations between adverse childhood experiences and depressive symptoms were not explained by social support and coping. Conclusion:Adverse childhood experiences are associated with deleterious mental health effects in later life. Social support and coping partially mediate the association between adverse childhood experiences and quality of life. Objectives:To assess the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of Aging Perceptions Questionnaire (C-APQ). Method:Participants aged 65 years and over were recruited from February 2012 to November 2012. The Aging Perceptions Questionnaire was translated into Chinese version professionally. Content validity was examined by a panel of seven experts; item reliabilities were assessed by test–retest; internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's α coefficient; half of the sample (N= 379) was selected to explore factorial structure of the C-APQ by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and another half of the sample (N= 379) was selected to confirm the findings from the EFA by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Statistical package SPSS version 18.0 and Amos 17.0 were used for the analysis. Results:The Cronbach's α coefficient of the C-APQ was 0.884. The test–retest reliability was satisfactory, with all intraclass correlation coefficients greater than 0.4. The overall content validity index was greater than 0.99. Seven factors (timeline acute/chronic, timeline cyclical, emotional representations, control positive, control negative, consequences positive and consequences negative) were identified in EFA and confirmed in CFA. Conclusion:The C-APQ could be a reliable and a valid measure of the self-perceptions of aging in the elderly in China, which may help to improve the life quality and extend longevity of the elderly. Objectives:This study describes the development of the Music Engagement Questionnaire (MusEQ), a 35-item scale to measure engagement with music in daily life. Music has implications for well-being and for therapy, notably for individuals living with dementia. A number of excellent scales or questionnaires are now available to measure music engagement. Unlike these scales, the MusEQ may be completed by either the participant or an informant. Method:Study 1 drew on a community-based sample of 391 participants. Exploratory factor analysis revealed six interpretable factors, which formed the basis for construction of six subscales. Study 2 applied the MusEQ to a group of participants with Alzheimer's disease (AD;n= 16) as well as a group of neurotypical older adults (OA;n= 16). Informants completed the MusEQ, and the OA group also completed the self-report version of the MusEQ. Both groups had an interview in which they described the place music had in their lives. These interviews were scored by three independent raters. Results:The MusEQ showed excellent internal consistency. Five of the factor-derived subscales showed good or excellent internal consistency. MusEQ scores were moderately correlated with a global rating of ‘musicality’ and with music education. There was strong agreement between self-report and informant-report data. MusEQ scores showed a significant positive relationship to independent ratings of music engagement. Background:Improving quality of care for people with dementia is a high priority. Considerable resources have been invested in financial incentives, guideline development, public awareness and educational programmes to promote earlier diagnosis and better management. Objectives:Evaluating family physicians’ concordance with guidelines on diagnosis and management of people with dementia, from first documentation of symptoms to formal diagnosis. Method:Analysis of medical records of 136 people with dementia recruited by 19 family practices in NW London and surrounding counties. Results:Practices invited 763 people with dementia to participate, 167 (22%) agreed. Complete records were available for 136 (18%). The majority of records included reference to recommended blood tests, informant history and caregiver concerns. Presence or absence of symptoms of depression, psychosis, other behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, and cognitive function tests were documented in 30%–40% of records. Documentation of discussions about signs and symptoms of dementia, treatment options, care, support, financial, legal and advocacy advice were uncommon. Comparison of these findings from a similar study in 2000–2002 suggests improvements in concordance with blood tests, recording informant history, presence or absence of depression or psychosis symptoms. There was no difference in documenting cognitive function tests. Immediate referral to specialists was more common in the recent study. Conclusion:Five years after UK dementia guidelines and immediately after the launch of the dementia strategy, family physicians appeared concordant with clinical guidelines for dementia diagnosis (other than cognitive function tests), and referred most patients immediately. Objectives: Increasing demand for early detection and prevention of dementia has shifted recent attention toward cognitive impairment with no dementia (CIND), which is often considered a possible risk path to dementia. Education and cognitive leisure activities are major predictors featured in dementia studies. However, the definition of cognitive leisure activities often has been inconsistent and diverse. This study explored different domains of these activities and their moderating roles on the relationship between education and cognition. Method: A sample of 704 participants aged 70 or older was drawn from the national Aging, Demographics, and Memory Study. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted to assess two domains from cognitive leisure activities: literacy and visuospatial activities. Multinomial logistic regression tested the main and moderating roles of each domain on cognition categorized as no impairment, CIND, and dementia. Results: Individuals with greater engagement in both literacy and visuospatial activities were more likely to have no cognitive impairment than CIND. Individuals with greater engagement in literacy activities were less likely to have dementia compared to CIND. Literacy activities and education years had a significant interaction effect. Individuals with higher education seem to benefit more by engaging in literacy activities, as evidenced by decreased odds of having dementia. Conclusion: Engagement in cognitive leisure activities for both cognitively intact and impaired older adults is suggested, with more focus on literacy activities for cognitively impaired and highly educated older adults. Objectives: Multimorbidity, the presence of multiple chronic medical conditions, is particularly prevalent in older adults. We examined the relationship of multimorbidity with mental health, social network and activity limitations in the National Health and Aging Trends Study, a nationally representative, age-stratified sample of older adults. Method: After excluding participants who used a proxy to complete the survey and those who did not answer any of the depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms and positive and negative affect items, the final sample was 7026. A disease count of 10 conditions (heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, lung disease, stroke, dementia, cancer, fracture) was used. Results: Factor analysis indicated a one factor structure for disease count was tenable, although cancer did not appear to fit the model. Therefore, a count of the nine other diseases was used. Disease count was related to increased depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms and negative affect and less positive affect. All individual diseases including cancer were related to worse mental health as was having two or more conditions. Disease count, having two or more conditions and several individual diseases (heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, cancer and fracture) were also related to increases in social network size while other individual diseases (osteoporosis, diabetes, lung disease, stroke and dementia) were related to decreases in social network size. All the measures of multimorbidity and individual diseases were associated with the increased odds of activity limitations. Objectives: Despite the growing body of evidence that suggests dyslexia persists through the life span, there is a dearth of research that explores the complicating factor of dyslexia in late adulthood. Based upon stress and coping theory, this study examined whether perceived family support protects the impact of negative emotional experience with dyslexia on self-esteem. Methods: Adults aged 21 years and older with diagnosed or self-reported dyslexia were participants in a web-based survey. A total of 224 individuals completed the survey. These findings are from the 50 participants who reported to be 60 years or older. Completed measures include their perception of family support, emotional experience with dyslexia, self-esteem, and demographic variables. Results: Preliminary analysis revealed that negative emotional experience with dyslexia negatively impacts self-esteem. Hierarchical moderated regression analysis demonstrated that positive perceived family support significantly buffers, mitigates, and protects the effects of negative emotional experiences with dyslexia on self-esteem in individuals with dyslexia in late adulthood. Conclusion: In this study, family support promoted self-esteem because as a protective dynamic, it helped older adults cope with the emotional distress associated with dyslexia. Objective:Two small studies have suggested that family carers of people with dementia may be a high-risk group for suicide. The objective of this study was to further explore the rate of suicidal ideation in a large sample of carers and identify psychosocial risk and protective factors. Method:A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 566 family carers. The survey included measures of suicidality, self-efficacy, physical health, depression, anxiety, hopelessness, optimism, burden, coping strategies, and social support. Results:Sixteen percent of carers had contemplated suicide more than once in the previous year. There were univariate differences between suicidal and non-suicidal carers on self-efficacy, social support, coping, burden, depression, anxiety, hopelessness, optimism, reasons for living, and symptoms of dementia, as well as age and income management. In a multivariate model, age, depression, and reasons for living predicted suicidal ideation. In tests for mediation, satisfaction with social support and dysfunctional coping had indirect effects on suicidal ideation via depression. Conclusion:Family carers of people with dementia have high rates of suicidal ideation, with depression a risk factor and increasing age and reasons for living as protective factors. Objectives:Older adults are the fastest growing age group in Australia, necessitating an increase in appropriate mental health services in the coming years. While Internet-delivered mental health treatments have been established as acceptable and efficacious among younger samples, little research has explored whether they would be similarly useful in older populations. Methods:The participants were part of the Australian Rural Mental Health study, which explores mental health and well-being in residents of non-metropolitan New South Wales. A postal survey was used to assess knowledge of and intentions to use Internet-delivered mental health treatments. Demographics, mental health, and frequency of Internet use were also measured. Results:The survey was completed by 950 adults aged 50–93. The sample was largely unfamiliar with Internet mental health services, with 75% reporting that they had never heard of them and a further 20% not knowing any details of what they involved. Intentions to use these services were also low, at 13.5%; however, this increased with level of familiarity. Respondents with higher psychological distress, higher education, and more frequent Internet use were significantly more likely to consider using Internet treatments. Conclusions:Among older adults, overall awareness of Internet-delivered mental health treatments appears to be limited; however, higher familiarity contributes to higher intentions to use these treatments. Importantly, respondents with higher distress and greater computer literacy were more likely to consider mental health treatments delivered via the Internet. Objective:This study compared urban and rural factors associated with life satisfaction among older adults in mainland China. Method:Study data were extracted at random from 10% of the Sample Survey on Aged Population in urban/rural China in 2006 for 1980 participants aged 60 and older, including 997 from urban cities and 983 from rural villages. Results:In this study, 54.6% of urban older adults and 44.1% of rural older adults reported satisfaction with their lives. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that financial strain, depressive symptoms, filial piety, and accessibility of health services were significantly associated with life satisfaction for both urban and rural participants, but age and financial exchange with children were only associated with life satisfaction among urban older adults. Conclusion:Findings are consistent with some previous studies that indicated the importance of financial strain, depressive symptoms, filial piety, and accessibility of health services to life satisfaction among the older adults in both urban and rural areas.
