We present two methods to prove the strict monotonicity of the global branch of solutions of some PDEs in the L2 norm, and the uniqueness of the corresponding normalized ground states. We will first discuss the key ideas and ingredients of each method. Then, we will apply them to various classes of PDEs. Our approach is applicable to other operators, domains and nonlinearities provided that some hypotheses are satisfied. We provide a new convergence proof of the celebrated Merriman-Bence-Osher scheme for multiphase mean curvature flow. Our proof applies to the new variant incorporating a general class of surface tensions and mobilities, including typical choices for modeling grain growth. The basis of the proof are the minimizing movements interpretation of Esedo\u{g}lu and Otto and De Giorgi's general theory of gradient flows. Under a typical energy convergence assumption we show that the limit satisfies a sharp energy-dissipation relation.

In this paper we investigate the limiting values of the lift and drag coefficients of profiles in the Helmholtz--Kirchhoff (infinite cavity) flow. The coefficients are based on the wetted arc length of profile surfaces. Namely, for a given value of the lift coefficient we find minimum and maximum values of the drag coefficient. We provide a simple proof of the radial symmetry of any nonnegative minimizer for a general class of quasi-linear minimization problems, Comment: 22 pages

We give a simple proof of the fact that for a large class of quasilinear elliptic equations and systems the solutions that minimize the corresponding energy in the set of all solutions are radially symmetric. We require just continuous nonlinearities and no cooperative conditions for systems. Thus, in particular, our results cannot be obtained by using the moving planes method. In the case of scalar equations, we also prove that any least energy solution has a constant sign and is monotone with respect to the radial variable., Comment: 12 pages

We carry out an extensive investigation of conservation laws and potential symmetries for the class of linear (1+1)-dimensional second-order parabolic equations. The group classification of this class is revised by employing admissible transformations, the notion of normalized classes of differential equations and the adjoint variational principle. All possible potential conservation laws are described completely. They are in fact exhausted by local conservation laws. For any equation from the above class the characteristic space of local conservation laws is isomorphic to the solution set of the adjoint equation. Effective criteria for the existence of potential symmetries are proposed. Their proofs involve a rather intricate interplay between different representations of potential systems, the notion of a potential equation associated with a tuple of characteristics, prolongation of the equivalence group to the whole potential frame and application of multiple dual Darboux transformations. Based on the tools developed, a preliminary analysis of generalized potential symmetries is carried out and then applied to substantiate our construction of potential systems. The simplest potential symmetries of the linear heat equation, which are associated with single conservation laws, are classified with respect to its point symmetry group. In the present paper we introduce Mobius energy for the embedded graphs and formulate its main properties. This energy is invariant under the action of the group generated by all inversions in three-dimensional real space. We study critical configurations for the angles at vertices of degree less than five, and discuss the techniques of construction of symmetric toric embedded graphs with critical values of Mobius energy.

We adapt a technique of nonsmooth critical point theory developed by Degiovanni-Zani for a semilinear problem involving the Laplacian to the the case of the $p$-Laplacian. We suppose only coercivity conditions on the potential and impose no growth condition of the nonlinearity. The coercivity is obtained using similar nonresonance conditions to [Mawhin-Ward-Willem] and to [Landesman-Lazer] in two different results and using some comparison functions and comparison spaces in a third one. It is also shown that neither of the three theorems implies the two others.

One applies the symmetry group theory for study the partial differential equations of Tzitzeica surfaces theory. One finds infinitesimal symmetries, Lagrangians and a new solution of Titzeica equation., Comment: 21 pages

We give a linking theorem that strengthens and unifies some many minimax theorems including Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz ``mountain pass theorem'', Rabinowitz ``multidimensional mountain pass theorem'', Rabinowitz ``saddle point theorem'' and Silva's variants of these results. We focus our attention especially on ``the limiting case'', known to be true for the mountain pass principle, where some information on the location of the critical points is given. We consider a special case of the three dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system where the particles are restricted to a plane, a situation that is used in astrophysics to model extremely flattened galaxies. We prove the existence of steady states of this system. They are obtained as minimizers of an energy-Casimir functional from which fact a certain dynamical stability property is deduced. From a mathematics point of view these steady states provide examples of partially singular solutions of the three dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system., Comment: 25 pages, LaTeX
