This paper aims to provide an overview of the history of French-Canadian missionary journals in the twentieth century. Three periods shape this history of missionary journals: the multiplication of journals for informing and propagating the faith (1900-1944), the challenges of the missionary press (1945-1960) and the questioning in relation with a wider process of secularization (1961-2000). This overview provides a better understanding of the apostolic activities of the French-Canadian Church emphasizing the material and ideological transformations of these publications. Beyond the projected image, the proselytism, the prejudices and the racism that they convey, these journals retrace the evolution of the Catholic Church and its missionary movement as well as the evolution of Quebec society and its relationship to foreign societies and cultures. Cet article a pour objectif d'effectuer un survol de l'histoire des revues missionnaires canadiennes-francaises au XXe siecle. Trois periodes faconnent cette histoire des revues missionnaires: la multiplication des revues dans le but d'informer et de propager la foi (1900-1944), les defis de la presse missionnaire (1945-1960) et les remises en question en lien avec un plus large processus de secularisation (1961-2000). Ce survol permet une meilleure comprehension des activites apostoliques de l'Eglise canadienne- francaise en insistant sur les transformations materielle et ideologique de ces revues. This paper compares the topic of exile found in Saint-John Perse and Yvan Golfs peotry in the catholic journal La Nouvelle Releve (1941-1948). Pulled from the archives and communications of three French-Canadian mediators (Simone Aubry-Beaulieu, Paul Beaulieu and Louis-Marcel Raymond), it explains the exchanges of these poems within a network of francophone journals in the Americas. The author puts these cultural trades in a new international perspective brought forward by the uncertainty of the Second World War and suggests that they are timed with the emergence french-speaking literature in communities around the world. Cet article propose une analyse comparee des poetiques de l'exil chez Saint-John Perse et Y van Goll a la revue catholique La Nouvelle Releve (1941-1948). En centrant le regard sur les archives et les correspondances de trois mediateurs quebecois (Simone Aubry-Beaulieu, Paul Beaulieu et Louis-Marcel Raymond), il retrace la circulation de ces textes poetiques au sein du reseau transamericain des revues francophones. This article suggests a re-evaluation of the received wisdom concerning the experience and contributions of Canadian chaplains during the Great War. Employing Padre Benedict Joseph Murdoch's The Red Vineyard, it will be argued that not all chaplains were aloof mandarins of the officer class far removed from danger and out of touch with the men. This paper places Murdoch's The Red Vineyard squarely within the canon of Canadian Great War literature and demonstrates that the book was an antidote to the received disillusionment narratives of that conflict. Finally, it will be suggested that Murdoch's blunt and honest record of his wartime experiences and the effects of those experiences (PTSD) make him a singular and unsung advocate for Canada's Great War soldiers. Cet article propose une reevaluation des idees recues concernant Texperience et les contributions des aumoniers canadiens pendant la Grande Guerre. En utilisant The Red Vineyard de Padre Benedict Joseph Murdoch, il sera soutenu que tous les aumoniers n'etaient pas des mandarins distants de la classe des officiers, loin du danger et hors de contact avec les hommes. Cet article examine un dialogue important mais peu étudié entre Sartre et le philosophe du langage Brice Parain. Les deux écrivains constatent un mal du langage, issu de la Grande Guerre de 1914-18 et de ses traumatismes que les mots proférés par les survivants sont incapables de prendre en charge. Dans ce monde << inhumain >>, où trouver un remède ? Pour Parain et Sartre le retour à n'importe quel humanisme implique une réflexion sur le langage. A travers sa lecture de Parain et ce qu'il propose, Sartre repense les bases de sa propre conception du langage d'une manière qui lui permet de développer son propre humanisme et les principes de la littérature engagée. Mais la dimension religieuse de l'argumentation de Parain, écartée par Sartre, laisse-t-elle des traces sur la conception sartrienne de l'auteur ? First, after clarifying what is common and different in their backgrounds, we will see that Sartre and Parain share a common belief that language itself has taken ill, as a result of the First World War, an illness for which both feel a need to find a remedy. Secondly, we will show how Sartre's reading of Parain allowed him to construct a theory of language that is consistent with his own humanism and the principles of committed literature. Finally, we will examine the influence of the religious dimension of Parain's argument on Sartre's theory of authorship. What contribution did the Quebecois missionary effort bring to the reception of Vatican II in Quebec? To answer that, this paper focuses on the experience of members of four missionary institutes founded in Quebec: the Missionnaires de l'lmmaculee-Conception, the Missionnaires de Notre-Dame des Anges, the Societe des Missions etrangeres du Quebec, and the Missionnaires du Christ-Roi, between 1945 and 1962. This paper analyses the missionaries' preconciliar experience of cultural and religious difference, and shows how it contributed to the emergence of a changing perspective on Christianity, the Church, and mission. Based on interviews conducted with missionaries, the institutes' archives, and secondary sources, this paper argues that parallels exist between shifts in the missionary field with respect to lay people, the local church, cultural and religious differences, and the way the Quebec Church prepared itself for Vatican II. Quelle fut la contribution des missionnaires quebecois a la reception de Vatican H au Quebec? Pour y repondre, cet article analyse I' experience des membres des quatre instituts missionnaires de fondation quebecoise: les Missionnaires de l'lmmaculee-Conception, les Missionnaires de NotreDame des Anges, la Societe des Missions etrangeres du Quebec et les Missionnaires du Christ-Roi, de 1945 a 1962. Quebec society has repeatedly been described as unique in its radical emancipation from religious institutions in the wake of the Quiet Revolution (1960-1970). Notwithstanding the question of Quebecers' sustained spiritual beliefs, how can historians account for the spectacular marginalization of the Roman Catholic Church during the Quiet Revolution? This paper hypothesises that an increase of worldly rewards anda decrease of otherworldly rewards has fuelled the decline of the Church. In the 1960s, the Church found itself in competition with a rapidly developing consumer and state-controlled society. Adhesion to the Church became a personal affair that had to be weighed against other interests, desires, aspirations, and needs. To an increasing number of Quebecers, religious 'jobs' were no longer prestigious and did not hold unique spiritual incentives. The disenchantment of religious beliefs and rites accompanied the fall of the Church's organizational prominence in the development of French Canada. Catholic may have been what Quebecers still wanted to 'be.' It was, however, no longer what they wanted to 'do.' La societe quebecoise du XXe siecle a souvent ete decrite comme un cas unique d'emancipation du giron religieux. Nonobstant la question de la resilience des croyances religieuses des Quebecois, comment les historiens peuvent-ils comprendre la marginalisation radicale de l'Eglise catholique en tant que mode d' encadrement social au moment ou eclate la Revolution tranquille (1960-1970)? Cet article formule l'hypothese qu 'une augmentation des recompenses terrestres, couplee a une diminution des recompenses ecclesiales, a contribue au declin de l'Eglise. Dans les annees 1960, l'Eglise s'est retrouvee placee en competition avec une culture de consommation en plein essor et une societe technocratique ou predominait l 'interventionnisme gouvernemental. L'adhesion a l'Eglise est devenue une affaire personnelle qui devait etre mise dans la balance d'autres interets, desirs, aspirations et besoins. Pour un nombre croissant de Quebecois, les' << emplois >> religieux n'avaient plus le prestige profane de naguere et ne possedaient plus des attraits spirituels distinctifs. Le desenchantement des croyances et des rites religieux a accompagne la fin de la domination de I'Eglise organisationnelle dans le developpement du Canada franeais.
