Reducing examination table paper (ETP) use may help curb carbon emissions from health care. Six participants applied Glo Germ (DMA International) to their hands before a common physical examination (abdominal, cardiorespiratory, hip and knee) both with and without ETP. After each exam, UV light was shined on the exam table and photographs were taken. The number of hand touches on ETP-covered areas and uncovered areas were tallied and compared using t tests. Despite covering more surface area, participants touched areas without ETP significantly more than ETP-covered areas (P https://doi.org/10.1370/afm.3092, INTRODUCTION Climate change negatively impacts mental health, respiratory and cardiac disease, and quality-adjusted life years. 21. Reduction of fines in recycled paper white water via cellulase enzymes
- Abstract
Due to the high wastepaper recyclability and water-loop system closure, packaging paper mills struggle with increased fines, causing runnability issues. Cellulase enzymes are a preferred treatment choice for the improvement of the pulp refining in stock preparation area but are not widely used or easy to introduce in the production process. Different cellulase enzymes were tested, and those with the highest activity were introduced to the white-water (WW) samples with the aim to reduce fines content as potentially new enzyme applications on the paper machine. The first portion of the study involved the development of an experiment model to find and confirm the optimal enzyme process parameters (40 °C, pH 5.7, reaction time 3 h, and 0.18% v/v enzyme addition) for laboratory made white-water. The second portion of the study included turbidity, colloidal charge, flow cytometry (FCM), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) analysis on industrial and laboratory made white-water samples at optimized process parameters. Obtained results corresponded to reduced fines content in white-water samples, which justified commercial usage of cellulase enzymes on recycled paper machine short loop and potentially increased machine runnability without negative influence on wastewater treatment plant.

22. Profiling of historical rag papers by their non-cellulosic polysaccharide composition
- Abstract
Hemicellulose and pectin are noteworthy components of historical European rag papers, and have not been studied in detail so far. Rag papers were made from used textiles, and fiber-based utilities, such as ropes and bags. These had been prepared until the mid-19th century from plant-based fibers. Their polysaccharide composition could relate to their condition and history. This information can be expected to hold importance for the preservation and conservation of historical objects. We investigated a collection of rag papers of different age for their composition of non-cellulosic polysaccharides, and compared the findings with modern rag papers and wood pulps. Furthermore, a non-destructive determination of the hemicellulose and pectin content by near-infrared spectroscopy was developed. Historical rag papers had a lower hemicellulose/pectin content than pulps; the fractions of rhamnose, galactose, and arabinose were higher, while xylose was lower. In modern rag papers, xylose tended to be at the higher end of the range, which suggests a degradation of hemicelluloses/pectin over time or a change in raw materials and manufacturing. Rag papers also showed higher crystallinity than wood pulp papers. These findings provide insights into rag paper characteristics and offer potential classification methods.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the influence of job demands on academicians' mental health in selected public universities in Malaysia. Findings: This study examined the effects of job demand on academics' mental health in Malaysian public universities using the JD-R model. Given that employee happiness was strongly correlated with mental health, it is crucial to pay a particular attention to how job demands can lead to stressful life events and other detrimental outcomes Research limitations/implications: This study may bring to the developing guidelines for workload management, implementing mental health support programs, and creating a more supportive work environment. The comparison across institutions can be done and may lead to the interdisciplinary collaboration which can offer comprehensive insights and solutions. However, some research implications and limitations associated with this study such as the sampling bias, self-reported data, as this study is a cross-sectional design and Findings from a specific study may not be fully generalizable to all academicians due to differences in disciplines, institutions, and cultural contexts. Practical implications: Studying the influence of job demand on the mental health of academicians has several practical implications, both for individuals working in academia and for institutions and policymakers as it increased awareness and self-care among academicians, allowing early intervention implementation, improving workplace policies, reducing stigma, improving employee's productivity, expansion of research in this topic, and many more. It can lead to improved mental well-being, productivity, and the overall quality of education and research in academia. Originality/value: Focusing on public universities in Malaysia adds a unique contextual dimension to the study. Malaysia has its own educational system, cultural factors, and socioeconomic conditions that can influence job demands and mental health in distinct ways compared to studies conducted in other countries. It can provide insights specific to the Malaysian context, inform policy decisions, enhance the work environment, and ultimately contribute to the well-being of both academicians and students in the Malaysian higher education system. 35. Ink and Paper in the Camp. Ego-Documents of Luxembourger Conscripts in the Soviet Captivity
- Abstract
In the paper by Inna Ganschow, the camp experience in the Soviet Union as a result of forced conscription will be treated, specifically in its artistic processing: secretly written diaries and letters by Luxembourg Wehrmacht soldiers. Contemporary historical research today calls them ego documents – private, handwritten texts of a personal nature. The range of texts to be examined in the lecture ranges from the smuggled out notes and letters that their released comrades took with them to Luxembourg, through diaries, speeches and self-made dictionaries to poems, short stories and drawings, some of which were in the camp and some immediately after the return from Tambov and other camps in the Soviet Union. The focus is on the question of dealing with the thesis of the Auschwitz concentration camp survivor Viktor Frankl, psychiatrist and neurologist from Vienna, that the meaning of camp life - logotherapy - can have a self-healing effect and increase the self-healing powers, which increases the chances of survival.

- Abstract
The Robert Alan Goldberg papers (1880-2019) house materials gathered by Goldberg while researching information for his books, Back to the Soil: The Jewish Farmers of Clarion, Utah, and Their World, Grassroots Resistance: Social Movements in Twentieth Century America, Enemies Within: The Culture of Conspiracy in Modern America, Hooded Empire: The Ku Klux Klan in Colorado, and Barry Goldwater., The materials for the book, Back to the Soil: The Jewish Farmers of Clarion, Utah and Their World, are housed in boxes 1-4. Clarion was a Jewish agricultural settlement which existed from 1912 to 1915, with the last members leaving in the 1920s. It was led by Benjamin Brown and other Jewish immigrants from the Pale of Russia and Poland. The colony received homestead land from the state of Utah and tried to establish an agricultural Jewish community near Gunnison in Sanpete County. The small community failed shortly after being established because of poor soil, lack of water, physical hardships, and discontent among its members. Box 1 includes the initial research proposal, and the diaries, monographs, and transcripts of interviews used to form the basis of the book. Most of these papers are in Yiddish with English translations, and were written by the leaders of the agriculture experiment. Box 2 holds two drafts of Goldberg's book. Boxes 3-4 contain correspondence with and written recollections from the survivors of Clarion and or their family members. This material is organized alphabetically by family name., The materials for Grassroots Resistance: Social Movements in Twentieth Century America are housed in boxes 5-21. They consist of brochures, newsletters, newspapers, and membership applications from activist groups. Magazine articles and news clippings about the activities of these academic, political, religious, and or radical organizations from the 1960s-1970s era are also included. Some of the groups represented are the National Socialist White People's Party, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Christian Anti-Communists Crusade, Clergy and Laymen Concerned about Vietnam, the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, the National Organization for Women, and the Rainbow Family of Living Light. Box 5 has material on African American history and the civil rights movement from 1968 to 1972. Boxes 6-14 contain information on the various activist groups and are arranged alphabetically by group name. Box 15 houses information on activist causes prevalent in the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Boxes 16-20 hold 110 different newspapers from this same era. The newspapers are from Cuba, China, Vietnam, and the activist syndicated underground press, as well as some established American newspapers. The newspaper publications are listed in alphabetical order by their published trade name with a cross reference to the publishing organization in the folder description. Addenda to the collection includes other research and general materials.

- Abstract
Papers of Henry Samuel Baird, an attorney of Green Bay, Wisconsin, active in Territorial politics and Indian affairs, and his wife and other family members. Correspondence, business records, speeches and writings, clippings, and other materials concern the fur trade, Indians, the Civil War draft, Peshtigo fire relief, real estate transactions, genealogy, and family matters., Among the papers are Baird's memoranda on the trial of Oshkosh, 1830; two muster rolls of companies of Menominee Indians, 1832; some correspondence, 1848-1850, on the reoccupation of Fort Howard and the return of the Winnebago to the upper Wisconsin River; a few items on Stockbridge Indian affairs and on the fur trade and traders; papers accumulated by Baird as draft commissioner during the Civil War; 3 school copybooks; and some reminiscent articles on Wisconsin history., Among the business and professional papers are letters from Henry R. Schoolcraft, Eleazer Williams, Ramsay Crooks (one in 1842 describing the death of Joseph Rolette), from Crooks' sons, Ramsay, Jr. of New York City and William of St. Paul, concerning the disposition of their father's property at Green Bay, and from William Astor, 1861-1863, relating to Astor land at Green Bay. Henry Dodge and Horace Rublee are other correspondents., The large quantity of personal family correspondence includes photostats of letters exchanged by Baird and his future wife during their courtship; about three dozen letters written by his father, Henry Baird, while he was living at Cleveland, Ohio, from 1822 to 1832, and in 1835-1836 when he was employed by the government to teach farming methods to the Indians at Neenah (Winnebago Rapids), Wisconsin, and letters written in 1836 by Henry S. Baird to his wife and to his father describing the sessions of the territorial legislature meeting at Belmont. There are also letters addressed to Mrs. Baird from the wives and sisters of officers who had been stationed at Fort Howard for brief periods. Mrs. Baird's own letters, frequently written in French, depict frontier living conditions in Green Bay and other Wisconsin communities, and family correspondence of later dates reflects the changes in social and political life which occurred as the state became more populated. Other correspondence of Mrs. Baird concerns relief for victims in the forest fires of 1871., Additional papers of members of their families include many written during the first quarter of the nineteenth century concerning Mackinac Island, Michigan. Among them are more than two dozen papers of Madame Madeleine Laframboise, written mainly in French. These include rosters, 1814, 1817, and 1819, of Captain Benjamin K. Pierce's company, which was stationed at Fort Mackinac; one letter written by the Reverend Francois V. Badin in 1833 and others regarding early Catholic missionary work in the Northwest; several from Antoine Dequindre and from other business and social acquaintances in Detroit; and a number from her nephew Alexis Laframboise, in Montreal, and her son Joseph. Other letters, 1834-1853, were written by Joseph to his cousin Mrs. Baird from his fur-trading post at Little Rock on the Minnesota River and from other stations. Genealogical information are the Tenney family and the Grignon family is present.

- Abstract
Anton M. Holter (1831-1921) was a pioneer Helena, Montana, lumberman and founder of the A.M. Holter Hardware Company. Papers (1831-1921) include correspondence, and organizational and financial records relating to mining, agriculture, lumber, real estate, and oil interests of three generations of the family, headed successively by Anton M. Holter, Norman B. Holter, and Norman J. "Jeff" Holter. Many of the enterprises were in partnership with Samuel T. Hauser. Interests include the A.M. Holter Hardware Company; Holter Realty; Holter Research Foundation; Judith Farms; Montana Flour Mills; and the Helena and Frisco, Helena and Victor, and Maginnis mining companies, This collection is arranged into several major subgroups. The first group is for the Holter Family and allied families. The second major group is for the Holter Family Enterprises. The remainder of the collection consists of records of numerous companies grouped together in categories, including Mining subgroups, Lumber and Timber subgroups, Agriculture subgroups, Real Estate and Investment subgroups, Mercantile subgroups, Oil subgroups, Utility and Transportation subgroups, and Miscellaneous subgroups. Within each subgroup the basic arrangement is alphabetical by the name of the company., The Holter Family Subgroup of the collection contains correspondence and other materials relating to individual family members. Within this subgroup is a series of family correspondence, which contains letters written between various Holters. The correspondence between Anton M. Holter and his sons, primarily Norman, Edwin, and Aubrey, and the correspondence between the three brothers, provides invaluable information concerning the many facets of the family's business activities and investments. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to read this family correspondence regardless of the topic of interest., The greatest value of the collection is its completeness and its century-long time span coverage. The materials serve to provide invaluable information on the Holter family; the family companies, particularly the A.M. Holter Hardware Company; the growth and development of Helena and vicinity; and the lumber, ranching, and mining industries in the Northwest. The only weakness in the collection is the lack of any meaningful materials documenting the political activities of the period. The name index accompanying this inventory is not meant to be a complete listing of all materials in the collection, but attempts to provide some guidance in relating companies and individuals. No effort was made to include the three main Holters, Anton, Norman, or Jeff, in the index. (Manuscript Collection 80).

Addressing solid waste recycling, this study aims to develop biodegradable kraft paper from buffing dust (BD) and post-consumed jute fiber (JF). Employing a simple solution casting method with a polyurethane binder, the kraft paper was fabricated and characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, OTR, biodegradability, and tensile tests. The findings revealed covalent and hydrogen bonding between BD and JF, forming a uniform surface. Notably, the composite exhibited improved thermal stability, enhanced gas barrier properties, and biodegradability compared to individual components. Furthermore, the composite also showed 57% higher tensile strength, 38% greater elongation, 20% increased hardness, and 9% higher density compared to buffing dust. Compared to jute fiber, the increases were 125%, 91%, 30%, and 19% respectively. Moreover, the composite excelled in gas barrier performance, surpassing BD and JF by a remarkable 61% and 73% increase respectively. These significant findings underscore the vast potential of the composite kraft paper as a versatile material suitable for various applications, including packaging, interior furnishing industries, and reinforcing elements in the footwear industry. By addressing waste management and promoting sustainability, this research contributes to the development of ecofriendly materials that align with contemporary environmental concerns. Highlights * Covalent and hydrogen bonding enhance uniformity. * Biodegradable kraft paper with improved properties. * Impressive tensile strength, elongation, and hardness. * Versatile material for eco-friendly applications. * Promotes sustainability and waste management. KEYWORDS buffing dust, eco-friendly packaging, kraft paper, polymer composite, solid waste management, 1 | INTRODUCTION The paper industry heavily relies on natural resources like wood, which has resulted in significant environmental pollution. Therefore, alternatives are urgently needed to reduce the negative impact [...]
