Hospital ethics committees (HECs) are expected to play extremely broad and pivotal roles such as case consultation, education of staffs on healthcare ethics, and institutional policy formation. Despite the growing importance of HECs, there are no standards for setup and operation of HECs, and composition and activities of HECs at each institution are rarely disclosed in Japan. In addition, there is also a lack of information sharing and collaboration among HECs. Therefore, the authors established the Consortium of Hospital Ethics Committees (CHEC) in October 2020, which has been regularly hosting a couple of core activities. One is the Healthcare Ethics Forum, held monthly online for CHEC members to freely discuss HECs and healthcare ethics consultation. The other is the Collaboration Conference of Hospital Ethics Committees, intended to provide a place for HEC members and administrative officers from across Japan to exchange information of their HECs, learn from each other, and cooperate to operate HECs appropriately. In this paper, the authors introduced CHEC as well as reported the results of a questionnaire survey conducted at the first conference among participating facilities, suggesting the diverse structures and activities of HECs in Japan. This article reports on the third Psychology of Language Learning (PLL3) conference which was held at Waseda University in Tokyo June 7-10, 2018. This edition of the biennial event marked the launch of the International Association for the Psychology of Language Learning (IAPLL) as the host following its formation in 2016. The stated aims of IAPLL are to foster research, hold conferences, issue publications, cooperate with related organizations and carry on other activities for those interested in the study of the psychology of language learning throughout the world. In addition to invited plenary speakers, the call for papers sourced symposia, poster presentations, and papers under the theme "Stretching Boundaries." The article presents information on the Second Asian Pacific Interdisciplinary Research in Accounting (APIRA) Conference held at the Osaka City University, Japan, during August 4-6, 1998. This conference was held in association with "Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal" and followed on from the inaugural APIRA network conference held in Sydney in 1995. Second APIRA Conference, the local Japanese organising committee and Osaka City University attracted over 160 delegates from 15 countries representing Europe, North America and the Asian-Pacific Region. The refereed papers programme had a strong interdisciplinary focus with research papers and forums addressing the relationship between accounting, auditing and accountability and their social, institutional, economic and political environment. An important outcome from the conference is the publication of the commentaries on several important areas including management accounting, public sector accounting, social and environmental accounting, critical perspectives on accounting, Japanese and international accounting, and accounting history.

Since its beginning in 1992 in Japan, International Symposium on Semiconductor Manufacturing (ISSM) has provided unique opportunities to share the best practices of semiconductor manufacturing technologies for professionals. Purpose Elders' ICT usage is one of the central subjects of ISG. The cabinet office of Japan has conducted "The International Comparative Survey on the Daily Life and Attitudes of the Elderly" every five years, covering individual men and women aged 60 and over (excluding institutionalized residents) in Japan and three foreign countries. The survey provides information on matters related to home life, health and welfare, economic life, employment, housing and living environment, and social relations and purpose in life of the elderly in the countries. The latest 2021 survey has been done in Japan, Germany, Sweden, and the US (https://www.e-stat.go.jp/statsearch/files?page=1&layout=dataset&toukei=00100106&metadata=1&data=1). In Japan and Sweden, 2,500 participants each country were invited by mail. In Germany and the US, 1,000 participants per country were asked by phone. All participants were chosen by random sampling. The survey period was from Dec. 2020 to Jan. 2021. The result of the survey was open for further analysis and research. Survey data was counted and provided as simple tables or cross tables. In this paper, we chose Q.34, Usage of ICT devices, and Q.35, Reason for not-to-use of such devices. The latter question was asked to participants who responded that they are not using any ICT devices. We have analyzed survey data with Correspondence Analysis to reveal four countries of elders' ICT usage features. Method Two question branches are analyzed in this research. Q34 has nine activity categories. All appropriate activities should be answered (multiple answers): 1. Fax to family members and friends, 2. PC e-mail to family and friends, 3. Mobile phone calls (including mail) to family and friends, 4. Net search for information and/or net shopping, 5. Using SNS, 6. Home Page making or Blogging, 7. Netbanking / Net trading, 8. E-government (tax etc.), 9. No ICT usage. Q35: 1. No needs regarded, 2. ICT devices are hard to understand, 3. Have interest, but no clues for purchase/shop, 4. Have no one to instruct device usage, 5. The problem of price/money, 6. The display is unreadable, 7. other reasons. Correspondence analysis was computed with the FactoMineR package (http://factominer.free.fr/), developed by statisticians at d'Agrocampus Rennes. Analysis was done on statistical computing environment R 4.1.2. Results and Discussion Figures 1 and 2 show the ICT device usage. Japanese favor Mobile phone talk and mail. In Japan, Fax and No ICT usage has larger than in other countries. SNS, HP/blogging, E-government, and Netbanking are relatively minor. US participants favor SNS, PC mail, and HP/blogging. Swedish more favors SNS, Netbanking, and E-government. Germans favor Net searching and shopping and are close to the countries average. Figures 3 and 4 show the reasons for not-to-use ICT devices. Germans with negative ICT device attitude tend to think they do not need to use them. A negative attitude in the US is slightly close to having no instructor. Most economists examining the question of 'pollution havens' have concluded that the level of environmental regulation and activism in different states is not generally a significant determinant of international patterns of trade and foreign direct investment. This paper argues on the basis of extensive primary research that with respect to Japan's foreign direct investment during the 1970s, at any rate, this conclusion needs to be rethought. In the early 1970s, Japanese actors were remarkably forthright in ascribing their investment decisions to a desire to move polluting industry overseas. These statements allow us to examine 'pollution export' as a state strategy, a project advocated by industry organizations, and a response of individual firms to high levels of protest and regulation. The frameworks were sourced from the papers which include the "Report of the Japanese Government to the IAEA Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Safety June 2011." A background on what transpired in Japan on March 11, 2011 is provided beginning from the earthquake that hit the eastern coast of Japan up to the fuel melting that occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Power Plant.

Background: Glucocorticoid (GC)-induced hyperglycemia is characterized by elevated postprandial blood glucose, which commonly requires multiple insulin injections. We investigated whether a long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, dulaglutide (Dula), safely improved GC-induced hyperglycemia in inpatients, to reduce insulin injection frequency. Methods: The data of hospitalized patients with GC-induced hyperglycemia treated with Dula (Dula group, n = 38) or without (non-Dula group, n = 38) were retrospectively evaluated. Baseline data were collected at the beginning of GC treatment. The primary outcome in this study was glycemic control, which was compared between the groups using the six-point blood glucose (before and 2 h after each meal) profiles at discharge. The daily injection frequency of injectable drugs at discharge were also compared between groups. Results: No specific trend of underlying diseases was observed between the non-Dula and Dula groups. The proportion of patients previously administered with GC pulse therapy was comparable between the two groups. No significant differences were observed between groups, in the starting maintenance GC dose, GC dose at pretreatment of Dula and discharge, and cumulative GC dose during the observation. Six-point blood glucose levels at pretreatment and discharge were comparable between the two groups. However, daily injection frequency of injectable drugs and insulin dose were significantly lower in the Dula group than that in the non-Dula group. No differences were observed in the number of hypoglycemic events, the elevation of serum pancreatic enzyme levels, or gastrointestinal adverse events. Conclusion: These findings suggest that Dula could provide glycemic control while reducing the insulin dose and injection frequency in inpatients with GC-induced hyperglycemia. The occurrence of adverse events such as gastrointestinal symptoms and hypoglycemia did not increase in the Dula-treated patients compared to those not treated, suggesting its safety. Information on the symposium "Biodiversity in Changing Coastal Waters of Tropical and Subtropical Asia" held in Reihoku-Amakusa, Japan from November 30 to December 3, 2012 is presented. The encouragement of the students and aspiring researchers for the engagement in scientific research on coastal marine biodiversity is one of the objectives of the symposium. The 84 presentations featured in the symposium covers diverse topics which include ecology, physiology, and taxonomy.

This article reports on the JASAL Forum held at the JALT Conference in Hamamatsu on October 13th, 2012. JASAL, the Japanese Association of Self Access Learning, was set up in 2005 by Garold Murray and Lucy Cooker to provide a support network for educators and administrators involved with self-access language learning centers (hereafter SACs) in Japan. It holds a forum annually at JALT (the Japan Association for Language Teaching) conference. It has been a great success and providing information and support to those who are involved with SACs in Japan. I am also blessed with all the information and support from the JASAL Forum as I work for a SAC as the director. The 2012 JASAL Forum consisted of a poster session, three paper presentations and an open forum discussion, with the theme of 'Making a difference through Self Access.' The presentations this year focused on how to foster autonomy, how to develop understanding of the value of self-access among faculty and administration, and how to integrate self-access with the curriculum. The article discusses the history of the Bernard Shaw Society of Japan (BSSJ) as of its 40th anniversary in 2011. It notes the role of scholar Matahiko Ichikawa in facilitating Shaw's 1933 visit to Japan and in forming the society, originally called the Shaw Society of Japan (SSJ), in 1971. Other topics include the society workshops, its biannual meetings that include international lecturers, and its publication of the paperback book series "Bernard Shaw Studies." The society has also published the guidebook "Welcome to the Shavian World" in order to introduce Shaw to the Japanese public.

The 2010 annual conference of the Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet), Asia's oldest bioinformatics organisation formed in 1998, was organized as the 9th International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB), Sept. 26-28, 2010 in Tokyo, Japan. Initially, APBioNet created InCoB as forum to foster bioinformatics in the Asia Pacific region. Given the growing importance of interdisciplinary research, InCoB2010 included topics targeting scientists in the fields of genomic medicine, immunology and chemoinformatics, supporting translational research. Peer-reviewed manuscripts that were accepted for publication in this supplement, represent key areas of research interests that have emerged in our region. We also highlight some of the current challenges bioinformatics is facing in the Asia Pacific region and conclude our report with the announcement of APBioNet's 100 BioDatabases (BioDB100) initiative. Paper based on a presentation at the 14th International Symposium on Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis (OMCOS-14), 2-6 August 2007, Nara, Japan. Other presentations are published in this issue, pp. 807-1194Stereocontrolled additions of allylic metal reagents to carbonyl compounds constitute one of the most useful classes of transformations in organic synthesis. The recent development of Lewis and Brønsted acid-catalyzed manifolds for the allylboration of carbonyl compounds has opened doors toward an ideal carbonyl allylation methodology using stable and nontoxic allylic boronates as reagents. This paper describes the development of acid-catalyzed allylborations, mechanistic investigations of these new processes, and ongoing efforts toward general catalytic enantioselective allylboration methodologies. The preparation of optically enriched α-substituted allylic boronate reagents is discussed, as well as their applications in Lewis acid-catalyzed additions to afford skeletally diverse products like propionate units, polysubstituted furans, vinylcyclopropanes, and larger ring systems. Other presentations are published in this issue, pp. 807-1194The Reformatsky reaction is a venerable named reaction that was introduced more than 120 years ago. Diastereoselective variants based on the use of chiral auxiliary and enantioselective protocols, based on the employment of stoichiometric amount of chiral ligands, have been successfully applied in organic synthesis during the years. However, a facile and general catalytic enantioselective variant was still a difficult task. Recently, we have established a new general and straightforward methodology for catalytic enantioselective Reformatsky reaction based on different concepts. In this paper, we present our general finding in catalytic enantioselective Reformatsky reaction of ketones, imines, and aldehydes. The Third Symposium of the Los Alamos Computer Science Institute (LACSI) was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, U.S. on October 13-16, 2002. The mission of the LACSI Symposium series is to be a valuable forum for presenting and discussing current research and important programs in scalable high performance computing. Each year the format of the program has evolved to meet that goal. In 2002, the program included a keynote talk on Japan's Earth Simulator, a number of invited "state of the field" talks, an invited panel, a poster session, a day of workshops, and the presentation of 17 reviewed research papers selected from 42 technical submissions. Six papers from the Symposium is presented in this special issue of the "International Journal of High Performance Computing Applications." The selected papers represent the breadth of technical content of the Symposium.

The International Conference on Titanium was begun in 1968 to assess the national significance attached to the development of titanium in relation to the technical needs of the countries participating in this conference. Paper based on a presentation at the 14th International Symposium on Organometallic Chemistry Directed Towards Organic Synthesis (OMCOS-14), 2-6 August 2007, Nara, Japan. Other presentations are published in this issue, pp. 807-1194A new hydrosilylative cross-coupling reaction of a variety of alkynes with several alkenes, which is catalyzed by a cationic Pd complex [Pd(η3-C3H5)(cod)]+[PF6]- (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) was studied systematically. The reaction using HSiCl3 as an addend afforded more or less two types of products consisting of four possible derivatives, R1CH=CR2-CHR3-CHR4-SiCl3, which always contained 4-trichlorosilyl-1-butene frameworks, in acceptable combined yields. The coupling pattern was markedly dependent both on the precatalyst in the absence or presence of PPh3 ligand and on the combination of the alkyne and alkene partners employed. A possible catalytic cycle that involves an initial hydropalladation of an alkyne, followed by a facile and specific carbopalladation of an alkene, is proposed.
