Observers who were anything but rock-ribbed Republicans found a certain encouragement in the first months of U.S. President Warren G. Harding. A decade and a half has passed since the anti-evolutionist uproar was at its height and Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas passed laws officially banning the teaching of the evolutionary hypothesis in state-supported institutions of learning. These laws are largely dead letters today, and it is unthinkable that any other state would seek to buttress the historical truth of Genesis by legislative fiat. Yet many institutions in the U.S. make a fetish of Fundamentalism by offering bowdlerized courses in biology. An institution which rests its appeal primarily upon its belief in the absolute authority of the Bible and the creation of man by the direct act of God is Bob Jones College at Cleveland, Tennessee.

A real writer ought to be able to thrive in supreme independence upon any campus in the nation; the better the college the better his chance. He has already been versatile and energetic enough to organize and compose a doctoral dissertation. He is now able to stimulate groups of students for six or eight hours a week by introducing them to his own imagination, making his classroom a good one--probably better than most--by making it less a place of information than of discovery. Trained in the logical disciplines, the best people on any good campus in the United States provide a writer with a critical forum unsurpassed in knowledge.

Today's undergraduates are more interested in religion than college students have been for twenty years at least. That statement is confirmed by reports from Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, New York University and others, including some 100 colleges and universities across the U.S., visited by the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S. American college life is vast and complex, and there will be exceptions to any generalizations. Nevertheless the generalizations are useful as indicating trends in those institutions which, after all, are ideally searchers for truth--the citadels of thought and ideas that radiate their influence into the nation as a whole, despite the anti-intellectualism seen in some quarters.

One would naturally expect a keen appreciation of historical studies on the part of Southerners in the U.S. Nowhere in the Union is there such tenacious reverence for the past and its traditions. Yet there is no section of the U.S. in which both local and national history is so little studied and so imperfectly understood. There are Southern writers and strictly Southern text-books, but the writers are in the main special pleaders, and the text-books are dependent on books written at the North. Education is directed from above, since the teachers in general take into the lower schools the ideas prevalent at the higher schools.
