Exposure to air pollutants, such as PM2.5 and ozone, has a serious adverse effect on health, with more than 4 million deaths, including early deaths. Air pollution in ports is caused by exhaust gases from various elements, including ships, and to reduce this, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is also making efforts to reduce air pollution by regulating the sulfur content of fuel used by ships. Nevertheless, there is a lack of measures to identify and minimize the effects of air pollution. The Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model is the most used to understand the effects of air pollution. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model combining the CMAQ model and RNN-LSTM, an artificial neural network model. Since the RNN-LSTM model has very good predictive performance, combining these two models can improve the spatial distribution prediction performance of a large area at a relatively low cost. In fact, as a result of prediction using the hybrid model, it was found that IOA improved by 0.235~0.317 and RMSE decreased by 4.82~8.50 μg/m3 compared to the case of using only CMAQ. This means that when PM2.5 is predicted using the hybrid model, the accuracy of the spatial distribution of PM2.5 can be improved. In the future, if real-time prediction is performed using the hybrid model, the accuracy of the calculation of exposure to air pollutants can be increased, which can help evaluate the impact on health. The problem of air pollution has attracted more and more attention. PM2.5 is a key factor affecting air quality. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of PM2.5 concentration and make people effectively control the generation and propagation of atmospheric pollutants, in this paper, a long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) model based on principal component analysis (PCA) and attention mechanism (attention) is constructed, which first uses PCA to reduce the dimension of data, eliminate the correlation effect between indicators, and reduce model complexity, and then uses the extracted principal components to establish a PCA-attention-LSTM model. Simulation experiments were conducted on the air pollutant data, meteorological element data, and working day data of five cities in Ningxia from 2018 to 2020 to predict the PM2.5 concentration. The PCA-attention-LSTM model is compared with the support vector regression model (SVR), AdaBoost model, random forest model (RF), BP neural network model (BPNN), and long short-term memory neural network (LSTM). The results show that the PCA-attention-LSTM model is optimal; the correlation coefficients of the PCA-attention-LSTM model in Wuzhong, Yinchuan, Zhongwei, Shizuishan, and Guyuan are 0.91, 0.93, 0.91, 0.91, and 0.90, respectively, and the SVR model is the worst. The addition of variables such as a week, precipitation, and temperature can better predict PM2.5 concentration. The concentration of PM2.5 was significantly correlated with the geographical location of the municipal area, and the overall air quality of the southern mountainous area was better than that in the northern Yellow River irrigation area. PM2.5 concentration shows a clear seasonal change trend, with the lowest in summer and the highest in winter, which is closely related to the climate environment of Ningxia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Air pollutant forecasting can be used to quantitatively estimate pollutant reduction trends. Combining bibliometrics with the evolutionary tree and Markov chain methods can achieve a superior quantitative analysis of research hotspots and trends. In this work, we adopted a bibliometric method to review the research status of statistical prediction methods for air pollution, used evolutionary trees to analyze the development trend of such research, and applied the Markov chain to predict future research trends for major air pollutants. The results indicate that papers mainly focused on the effects of air pollution on human diseases, urban pollution exposure models, and land use regression (LUR) methods. Particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and ozone (O3) were the most investigated pollutants. Artificial neural network (ANN) methods were preferred in studies of PM and O3, while LUR were more widely used in studies of NOx. Additionally, multi-method hybrid techniques gradually became the most widely used approach between 2010 and 2018. In the future, the statistical prediction of air pollution is expected to be based on a mixed method to simultaneously predict multiple pollutants, and the interaction between pollutants will be the most challenging aspect of research on air pollution prediction. The research results summarized in this paper provide technical support for the accurate prediction of atmospheric pollution and the emergency management of regional air quality. Formaldehyde (HCHO) is one of the most important carcinogenic air contaminants in outdoor air. However, the lack of monitoring of the global surface concentration of HCHO is currently hindering research on outdoor HCHO pollution. Traditional methods are either restricted to small areas or, for research on a global scale, too data-demanding. To alleviate this issue, we adopted neural networks to estimate the 2019 global surface HCHO concentration with confidence intervals, utilizing HCHO vertical column density data from TROPOMI, and in-situ data from HAPs (harmful air pollutants) monitoring networks and the ATom mission. Our results show that the global surface HCHO average concentration is 2.30 μg/m3. Furthermore, in terms of regions, the concentrations in the Amazon Basin, Northern China, South-east Asia, the Bay of Bengal, and Central and Western Africa are among the highest. The results from our study provide the first dataset on global surface HCHO concentration. In addition, the derived confidence intervals of surface HCHO concentration add an extra layer of confidence to our results. As a pioneering work in adopting confidence interval estimation to AI-driven atmospheric pollutant research and the first global HCHO surface distribution dataset, our paper paves the way for rigorous study of global ambient HCHO health risk and economic loss, thus providing a basis for pollution control policies worldwide. Existing government air quality monitoring networks consist of static measurement stations, which are highly reliable and accurately measure a wide range of air pollutants, but they are very large, expensive and require significant amounts of maintenance. As a promising solution, low-cost sensors are being introduced as complementary, air quality monitoring stations. These sensors are, however, not reliable due to the lower accuracy, short life cycle and corresponding calibration issues. Recent studies have shown that low-cost sensors are affected by relative humidity and temperature. In this paper, we explore methods to additionally improve the calibration algorithms with the aim to increase the measurement accuracy considering the impact of temperature and humidity on the readings, by using machine learning. A detailed comparative analysis of linear regression, artificial neural network and random forest algorithms are presented, analyzing their performance on the measurements of CO, NO2 and PM10 particles, with promising results and an achieved R 2 of 0.93–0.97, 0.82–0.94 and 0.73–0.89 dependent on the observed period of the year, respectively, for each pollutant. A comprehensive analysis and recommendations on how low-cost sensors could be used as complementary monitoring stations to the reference ones, to increase spatial and temporal measurement resolution, is provided. Visibility is a complex phenomenon inspired by emissions and air pollutants or by factors, including sunlight, humidity, temperature, and time, which decrease the clarity of what is visible through the atmosphere. This paper provides a detailed overview of the state-of-the-art contributions in relation to visibility estimation under various foggy weather conditions. We propose VisNet, which is a new approach based on deep integrated convolutional neural networks for the estimation of visibility distances from camera imagery. The implemented network uses three streams of deep integrated convolutional neural networks, which are connected in parallel. In addition, we have collected the largest dataset with three million outdoor images and exact visibility values for this study. To evaluate the model's performance fairly and objectively, the model is trained on three image datasets with different visibility ranges, each with a different number of classes. Moreover, our proposed model, VisNet, evaluated under dissimilar fog density scenarios, uses a diverse set of images. Prior to feeding the network, each input image is filtered in the frequency domain to remove low-level features, and a spectral filter is applied to each input for the extraction of low-contrast regions. Compared to the previous methods, our approach achieves the highest performance in terms of classification based on three different datasets.
