This article describes a new method for evaluation of radial crush strength of paper cores. Based on the theory of multilayered composites, a mathematical model has been developed to calculate the value of destructive force during radial crushing of spirally shaped paper cores whose layers are made of different materials. In this paper, we develop and analyze a mathematical model for spreading malaria, including treatment with transmission‐blocking drugs (TBDs). The paper's main aim is to demonstrate the impact the chosen model for demographic growth has on the disease's transmission and the effect of its treatment with TBDs. We calculate the model's control reproduction number and equilibria and perform a global stability analysis of the disease‐free equilibrium point. The mathematical analysis reveals that, depending on the model's demography, the model can exhibit forward, backward, and even some unconventional types of bifurcation, where disease elimination can occur for both small and large values of the reproduction number. We also conduct a numerical analysis to explore the short‐time behavior of the model. A key finding is that for one type of demographic growth, the population experienced a significantly higher disease burden than the others, and when exposed to high levels of treatment with TBDs, only this population succeeded in effectively eliminating the disease within a reasonable timeframe. A generalization of the problem of writing on dirty paper is considered in which one transmitter sends a common message to multiple receivers. Each receiver experiences on its link an additive interference (in addition to the additive noise), which is known noncausally to the transmitter but not to any of the receivers. Applications range from wireless multiple-antenna multicasting to robust dirty paper coding. We develop results for memoryless channels in Gaussian and binary special cases. In most cases, we observe that the availability of side information at the transmitter increases capacity relative to systems without such side information, and that the lack of side information at the receivers decreases capacity relative to systems with such side information. For the noiseless binary case, we establish the capacity when there are two receivers. When there are many receivers, we show that the transmitter side information provides a vanishingly small benefit. When the interference is large and independent across the users, we show that time sharing is optimal. For the Gaussian case, we present a coding scheme and establish its optimality in the high signal-to-interference-plus-noise limit when there are two receivers. When the interference power is large and independent across all the receivers, we show that time-sharing is again optimal. Connections to the problem of robust dirty paper coding are also discussed. Formerly the geometry was based on shapes, but since the last centuries this founding mathematical science deals with transformations, projections, and mappings. Projective geometry identifies a line with a single point, like the perspective on the horizon line and, due to this fact, it requires a restructuring of the real mathematical and numerical analysis. In particular, the problem of interpolating data must be refocused. In this paper, we define a linear structure along with a metric on a projective space, and prove that the space thus constructed is complete. Fuzzy logic is becoming one of the most-influential fields of modern mathematics with applications that impact not only other sciences, but society in general. This newly found interest in fuzzy logic is in part due to the crucial role it plays in the development of artificial intelligence. As a result, new tools and practices for the development of the above-mentioned field are in high demand. This is one of the issues this paper was composed to address. To be more specific, a sizable part of fuzzy logic is the study of fuzzy connectives. However, the current method used to generalize them is restricted to the use of basic automorphisms, which hinders the creation of new fuzzy connectives. For this reason, in this paper, a new method of generalization is conceived of that aims to generalize the fuzzy connectives using polynomial automorphism functions instead. The creation of these automorphisms is achieved through numerical analysis, an endeavor that is supported with programming applications that, using mathematical modeling, validate and visualize the research. Furthermore, the automorphisms satisfy all the necessary criteria that have been established for use in the generalization process and, consequently, are used to successfully generalize fuzzy connectives. In this Brief Communication, we examine in detail the motion of light particles—or dense gas bubbles—rising under gravity in a cellular flow. We follow the methodology of Maxey [Phys. Fluids 30, 1915 (1987)], and we examine a range of parameters not fully discussed in the past, corresponding to particles lighter and yet more inertial than the surrounding fluid if the added mass effect is considered. We observe a nonmonotonic behavior of the particle rise velocity, which exhibits a maximum for density of the particles only slightly smaller than the density of the fluid. The maximum value of the average rise velocity corresponding to the “optimum” density is several times (more than 40) higher than those obtained for small density changes around the optimum. The occurrence of this maximum is due to the combined effects of particle inertia and fluid added mass, which segregate the rising particles into specific, fast pathlines where the local fluid velocity adds to the particle gravitational velocity. This paper investigates the dynamical behavior of the modified May–Holling–Tanner model in the presence of dynamic alternative resources. We study the role of dynamic alternative resources on the survival of the species when there is prey rarity. Detailed mathematical analysis and numerical evaluations, including the situation of ecosystem collapsing, have been presented to discuss the coexistence of species', stability, occurrence of different bifurcations (saddle-node, transcritical, and Hopf) in three cases in the presence of prey and alternative resources, in the absence of prey and in the absence of alternative resources. It has been obtained that the multiple coexisting states and their stability are outcomes of variations in predation rate for alternative resources. Also, the occurrence of Hopf bifurcation, saddle-node bifurcation, and transcritical bifurcation are due to variations in the parameters of dynamic alternative resources. The impact of dynamic alternative resources on species' density reveals the fact that if the predation rate for alternative resources increases, then the prey biomass increases (under some restrictions), and variations in the predator's biomass widely depend upon the quality of food items. This study also points out that the survival of predators is possible in the absence of prey. This paper proposes a new method to improve re performance of intra-field interpolation which is the mos~ important element of deinterlacing method. Traditional edge- based methods were poor at determining accurate edge iirection which decides interpolation performance. The 7roposed method decides the direction and slope of edge based on locally adaptive-thresholded binary image to mprove efficiency and accuracy, and it also increased the ~orizontal size of search window to 15 for better direction ietermination at gentle slope. Compared to traditional edge- based methods, interpolation based on binary image, which is ,`enerated using the proposed method, leads to great erformance improvement. The inflammatory phase is an important event in the skin wound healing process. The deposition of granulation tissue in the wound bed and the rebuilding of the vascular network occur as inflammation diminishes. An angiogenic component in the formation of granulation tissue is the secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor, which assists in the chemotaxis, proliferation, and replication of fibroblasts. In this paper, we develop a mathematical model of skin wound healing angiogenic factors based on inflammatory cells (macrophages and neutrophils) and mediators (interleukin 6 and interleukin 10). We highlight the importance of this process in vascular endothelial growth factor release and in the formation of new capillary tips. We used a mathematical model of partial differential equations based on the reaction‐diffusion‐advection equations. In order to calibrate the parameters, we considered an in vivo model composed by four treatments: hydroalcoholic extract and oil‐resin of Copaifera langsdorffii at 10% concentration, collagenase, and Lanette cream. Using the laboratory data for the wound edge, our mathematical model estimated the values of vascular endothelial growth factor concentration, and tips density in the center of the wound with a maximum error of 2.9%, and predicted healing time required for each treatment. The region of viability for the parameters, in the proposed model, was found through numerical simulations from the Interleukin 6 and 10 dysregulation and we obtained that, among the parameters analyzed, the greatest influencer in the dynamics of the system is the one, which represents the production of Interleukin 10 during phagocytosis. In this paper, we investigate the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) finite element method for the fractional Allen-Cahn equation with Caputo-Hadamard derivative in the time domain. First, the regularity of the solution is analyzed, and the results indicate that the solution of this equation generally possesses initial weak regularity in the time dimension. Due to this property, a logarithmic nonuniform L1 scheme is adopted to approximate the Caputo-Hadamard derivative, while the LDG method is used for spatial discretization. The stability and convergence of this fully discrete scheme are proven using a discrete fractional Gronwall inequality. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of this method. From the facts that numerous regions with initially similar economic conditions end up with different levels of entrepreneurial agglomeration, this paper constructs a model assuming that the sequential entrants make their career choices based on existing entrepreneurial ratio and describing the dynamics of entrepreneurial agglomeration formation. After mathematical analysis and numerical simulation using NetLogo, it is found that under social selection, a nonlinear Polya process with self-reinforcing and path-dependency characters will emerge, and the repeated entrants' career choices will lead to the agglomeration of entrepreneurship; the agent's risk compensation value, the initial population of agents, the number of role models in the early stage and the initial entrepreneurial ratio are determinants to the formation of entrepreneurial agglomeration. The findings confirm that entrepreneurship has "memory" and the entrepreneurial history could have influence on the future. In order to forge the entrepreneurial agglomeration, our suggestions include exerting influence on the determinants from an early age, and improving the individual's risk-taking abilities. The knowledge measure or uncertainty measure for constructing interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets has attracted much attention. However, many uncertainty measures are measured by the entropy of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets, which cannot adequately reflect the knowledge of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets. In this paper, we not only extend the axiomatic definition of the knowledge measure of the interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy set to a more general level but also establish a new knowledge measure function complying with the distance function combined with the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). Further, we investigate the properties of the proposed knowledge measure based on mathematical analysis and numerical examples. In addition, we create the entropy function by calculating the distance from the interval-valued fuzzy set to the most fuzzy point and prove that it satisfies the axiomatic definition. Finally, the proposed entropy is applied to the multi-attribute group decision-making problem with interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy information. In this paper, we investigate the energy minimization model arising in the ensemble Kohn--Sham density functional theory for metallic systems, in which a pseudo-eigenvalue matrix and a general smearing approach are involved. We study the invariance of the energy functional and the existence of the minimizer of the ensemble Kohn--Sham model. We propose an adaptive twoparameter step size strategy and the corresponding preconditioned conjugate gradient methods to solve the energy minimization model. Under some mild but reasonable assumptions, we prove the global convergence for the gradients of the energy functional produced by our algorithms. Numerical experiments show that our algorithms are efficient, especially for large scale metallic systems. In particular, our algorithms produce convergent numerical approximations for some metallic systems, for which the traditional self-consistent field iterations fail to converge. This paper is concerned with a reaction–diffusion–advection chemostat model with two species growing and competing for a single-limited resource. By taking the growth rates of the two species as variable parameters, we study the effect of growth rates on the dynamics of this system. It is found that there exist several critical curves, which may classify the dynamics of this system into three scenarios: (1) extinction of both species; (2) competitive exclusion; (3) coexistence. Moreover, we take numerical approaches to further understand the potential behaviors of the above critical curves and observe that the bistable phenomenon can occur, besides competitive exclusion and coexistence. To further study the effect of advection and diffusion on the dynamics of this system, we present the bifurcation diagrams of positive equilibrium solutions of the single species model and the two-species model with the advection rates and the diffusion rates increasing, respectively. This paper studies a model for flow in a fractured porous medium with intersecting fractures. The fractures are treated as lower-dimensional manifolds and then physical transmission conditions express the pressure jump and the continuity of the flux across the fractures. Specific attention is borne to the conditions when several fractures intersect. The resulting system is discretized with mixed finite element, and the well-posedness of both the continuous and the discrete problems are proved. Then a domain decomposition method is formulated, so that the problem is reduced to the set of fractures, and a simple preconditioner is proposed. Surrogate models are employed in engineering analysis to replace detailed physics-based models to achieve computational efficiency in problems that require multiple evaluations of the model. The accuracy of the surrogate model depends on the quality and quantity of data collected from the expensive model. This paper investigates surrogate modeling options for problems with high-dimensionality in both the input and output spaces. Several methods for reducing the output dimension are investigated, namely, singular value decomposition (SVD), random projection, randomized SVD, and diffusion map; similarly, several methods for input dimension reduction are investigated, namely, variance-based sensitivity analysis and active subspace discovery. The most effective combination of options for input and output dimension reduction is identified in a systematic way, followed by the construction of Gaussian process surrogate models in the low-dimensional space. The prediction error in the original space includes both the reconstruction error and surrogate error; a systematic approach is developed to quantify and compare the relative contributions of the two types of errors. The proposed general, systematic approach of exploring available options is applied to an aircraft fuselage panel. The Guyer–Krumhansl heat equation has numerous important practical applications in heat conduction problems. In recent years, it turned out that the Guyer–Krumhansl model can effectively describe the thermal behavior of macroscale heterogeneous materials. Thus, the Guyer–Krumhansl equation is a promising candidate to be the next standard model in engineering. However, to support the Guyer–Krumhansl equation's introduction into the engineering practice, its mathematical properties must be thoroughly investigated and understood. In the present paper, we show the basic structure of this particular heat equation, focusing on the differences in comparison to the Fourier heat equation obtained when (τ q , μ 2) → (0 , 0). Additionally, we prove the well-posedness of a particular, practically significant initial and boundary value problem. The main purpose of this paper is the numerical analysis of a class of mathematical models that describe the contact between a thermo-piezoelectric body and a conductive foundation. Under the assumption of a static process, the material's behavior is modeled with a linear thermo-electro-elastic constitutive law and the frictional contact with Signorini's and Tresca's laws. A variational problem is derived and the existence of a unique weak solution is proved by combining arguments from the theory of variational inequalities with linear strongly monotone Lipschitz continuous operators. A successive iteration technique to linearize the problem by transforming it into an incremental recursive form is proposed, and its convergence is established. An Augmented Lagrangian variant, known as the Alternating Direction Multiplier Method (ADMM), is employed to split the original problem into two subproblems, resolve them sequentially, as well as update the dual variables at each iteration. This paper provides mathematical and numerical analyses for a dynamic frictionless contact problem in which both of Signorini's condition and the normal compliance condition are used. The contact problem is considered by employing two viscoelastic (Kelvin-Voigt type) objects: a linear Timoshenko beam and a nonlinear spring. In addition, a transmission condition is imposed on one end of the beam and the top of the spring so that they can touch and vibrate together. We prove the existence of solutions satisfying all the conditions. Time discretizations and finite element methods are utilized to propose the fully discrete numerical schemes. This paper focuses on the influence mechanism of cyclic blades on the dynamic coupling of a flexible shaft-disk-blade (FSDB) system through mathematical analysis and numerical simulation. Firstly, a coupling mechanism model of an FSDB unit is developed through a Lagrange method and the assumed mode method (AMM), after considering the coupling behavior among shaft bending, shaft torsion, disk vibration, and blade bending. The modal comparison results between the proposed model and FEM affirm the validity of the model. Then the analytical interpretation is explored by decomposing and discussing the diagonal coupling and cross-coupling matrices of the FSDB system. The mechanism discussion reveals that the coupling matrices originate from the rigid and elastic motions of flexible disk and cyclic blades, indicating that the motions of cyclic blades play an important role in dynamic coupling. Therefore, the motions of cyclic blades are classified and analyzed, and their effects on natural frequencies (NFs) and critical speeds (CSs) are applied to further interpret and validate the dynamic coupling through numerical simulation. Multiphysics processes are common in nature and can occur in conjuction with intense strains. When strain softening is also present, the original uniform strain distribution is lost and strain localization occurs. In a classical continuum strain localization happens on a mathematical plane (i.e shear band of zero thickness). This leads to mesh dependent numerical analyses, in which strain localizes on the smallest mesh length. In this paper we investigate under which conditions multiphysics processes regularize the problem of strain localization. We study, for the first time, the influence of all the different coupling terms present in the original coupled multiphysics balance equations on the strain localization profile. We also consider the influence of viscosity and inertia effects. We show that the multiphysics processes do not always lead to mesh independent results. Furthermore, our rigorous mathematical analysis provides bounds for the different coupling parameters, for which multiphysics processes lead to strain regularization and mesh independent numerical results. Finally, we corroborate our mathematical findings, applying them to a numerical example of a coupled hydro-mechanical system of a fault under shear. In this paper, mathematical analysis and numerical methods for Caputo-Hadamard fractional diffusion-wave equations with initial singularity are investigated. By adopting the modified Laplace transform and the well-known finite Fourier sine transform, we obtain the analytical solution. Furthermore, the regularity and logarithmic decay of its solution are researched. Under the singularity hypothesis, the numerical methods for the problems are then studied. The model is first transformed into its equivalent form and then the technic of exponential type meshes is utilized. The fact that the discrete coefficients of Hadamard fractional integral have several graceful properties is crucial in convergence and stability analysis. For the sake of reducing storage and computational cost, the SOE technology is exploited to the new variable t = log ⁡ t n s. On this basis, a fast compact difference scheme and a fast compact ADI method are constructed for the one- and two-dimensional problems, respectively. To illustrate the significance of studying singularity, a Crank-Nicolson difference scheme is proposed. The final result that the error in numerically approximating the solution depends on the parameter γ shows obviously how the regularity of the solution and the exponential type meshes affect the convergence order of the derived scheme. The goal of this paper is to relate the capacitance matrix formalism to the tightbinding approximation. By doing so, we open the way to the use of mathematical techniques and tools from condensed matter theory in the mathematical and numerical analysis of metamaterials, in particular for the understanding of their topological properties. We first study how the capacitance matrix formalism, both when the material parameters are static and modulated, can be posed in a Hamiltonian form. Then, we use this result to compare this formalism to the tight-binding approximation. We prove that the correspondence between the capacitance formulation and the tight-binding approximation holds only in the case of dilute resonators. On the other hand, the tight-binding model is often coupled with a nearest-neighbor approximation, whereby long-range interactions are neglected. Even in the dilute case, we show that long-range interactions between subwavelength resonators are relatively strong and nearest-neighbor approximations are not generally appropriate. Inverse scattering problems stand at the center of many important imaging applications, such as geophysical explorations, radar imaging, and synthetic-aperture radar (SAR). Several methods have been proposed to solve them when the full data are available, usually providing satisfactory reconstructions. However, it is impossible to acquire the full data in many practical circumstances, such as target detection and ground penetrating radar (GPR); consequently, only limited data are available. Thus, this paper focuses on the mathematical analysis and some numerical simulations to estimate the achievable resolution in reconstructing an object from the knowledge of the scattered far-field when only limited data are available, with multi-view excitations at a single frequency. We focus on 2D full rectangular geometry as the investigation domain (ID). We also examine the number of degrees of freedom (NDF) and evaluate the point spread function (PSF). In particular, the NDF of the considered geometry can be estimated analytically. An approximated closed-form evaluation of the PSF is recalled, discussed, and compared with the exact one. Moreover, receiving, transmission, and angle sensing modes are considered to apply the analysis to more realistic scenarios to highlight the difference between the corresponding NDF and the resulting resolution performances. Finally, interesting numerical applications of the resolution analysis for the localization of a collection of point-like scatterers are presented to illustrate how it matches the expectations. Early estimation of biological growth of organisms is an indispensable task in ecology and related research areas. The biological growth is always time-continuous, while our observations of the phenomenon are time-discrete in practice. The formalism of the discrete costly observation (DCO) enables us to mathematically bridge the two qualitatively different processes. This formalism is still germinating, and its practical applications have not been carried out. This paper presents a first application of the DCO formalism to a cost-effective early estimation problem of the biological growth, and its mathematical and numerical analysis. Growth dynamics of organisms, which are fishery resources in this paper, is governed by a stochastic differential equation whose solution is observed discretely. The optimality equation to be solved for finding the most cost-effective observation policy is derived as a fixed point problem based on degenerate parabolic partial differential equations. The fixed point problem turns out to be uniquely solvable. A recursive approximation of the fixed point problem is presented and its solvability in a viscosity sense is discussed. A finite different scheme is then employed to fully-discretize the recursive equations. The present model is finally applied to a problem of Japanese smelt Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis (Ayu): an important inland fishery resource in Japan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the problem of opportunistic spectrum sharing for the next generation of wireless systems empowered by the cloud radio access network (C‐RAN) is studied. More precisely, low‐priority users employ cooperative spectrum sensing to detect a vacant portion of the spectrum that is not currently used by high‐priority users. The authors' aim is to maximize the overall throughput of the low‐priority users while guaranteeing the quality of service of the high‐priority users. This objective is attained by optimally adjusting spectrum sensing time, with respect to target probabilities of detection and false alarm, as well as dynamically allocating C‐RAN resources, that is, powers, sub‐carriers, remote radio heads, and base‐band units. To solve this problem, which is non‐convex and NP‐hard, a low‐complex iterative solution is proposed. In this paper, we have considered a deterministic mathematical model to analyze effective interventions for meningitis and pneumonia coinfection as well as to make a rational recommendation to public healthy, policy or decision makers and programs implementers. We have introduced the epidemiology of infectious diseases, the epidemiology of meningitis, the epidemiology of pneumonia, and the epidemiology of infection of meningitis and pneumonia. The positivity and boundedness of the sated model was shown. Our model elucidate that, the disease free equilibrium points of each model are locally asymptotically stable if the corresponding reproduction numbers are less than one and globally asymptotically stable if the corresponding reproduction numbers are greater than one. Additionally, we have analyzed the existence and uniqueness of the endemic equilibrium point of each sub models, local stability and global stability of the endemic equilibrium points for each model. By using standard values of parameters we have obtained from different studies, we found that the effective reproduction numbers of meningitis R e f f (m) = 9 and effective reproduction numbers of pneumonia R e f f (p) = 11 that lead us to the effective reproduction number of the meningitis and pneumonia co-infected model is m a x R e f f m , R e f f (p) = 9 . Applying sensitivity analysis, we identified the most influential parameters that can change the behavior of the solution of the meningitis pneumonia coinfection dynamical system are α 1 , α 2 and π . Biologically, decrease in α 1 and increasing in π is a possible intervention strategy to reduce the infectious from communities. Finally, our numerical simulation has shown that vaccination against those diseases, reducing contact with infectious persons and treatment have the great effect on reduction of these silent killer diseases from the communities. This paper is mainly concerned with a two-species competition model in open advective environments, where individuals cannot pass through the upstream boundary and do not return to the habitat after leaving the downstream boundary. By the theory of principal eigenvalue, we first obtain two critical curves (Γ1 and Γ2) in the plane of bifurcation parameters that sharply determine the local stability of the two semitrivial steady states. Then under various conditions on given parameters, we discuss the global dynamics via different techniques, including the comparison principle for eigenvalues and perturbation and compactness arguments, and show that both competitive exclusion and coexistence are possible. For general values of parameters, we take both analytic and numerical approaches to further understand the potential behaviors of Γ1 and Γ2, and we numerically observe that in addition to the competitive exclusion and coexistence, the bistable phenomenon is also possible, which is different from the known results of competitive ODE and reaction-diffusion systems (where bistability is impossible). The singularly perturbed parabolic differential equations with integral boundary conditions and a large negative shift in the space variable are studied in this paper. The implicit Euler method for the temporal direction and the cubic spline method for the spatial direction on a piecewise uniform mesh (Shishkin mesh) are applied to formulate a parameter-uniform numerical method. To handle the integral boundary condition, the composite Simpson's rule is used. The proposed scheme has been shown to be uniformly convergent with order of convergence O Δ t + N − 2 ln 2 N . The maximum absolute errors and rate of convergence for various perturbation parameters and mesh size values are tabulated for two model problems, which agrees with the theoretical estimates and the method is more accurate than the results of some methods existing in the literature. In the preceding paper [A. E. Ismail, G. C. Rutledge, and G. Stephanopoulos J. Chem. Phys. (in press)] we introduced wavelet-accelerated Monte Carlo (WAMC), a coarse-graining methodology based on the wavelet transform, as a method for sampling polymer chains. In the present paper, we extend our analysis to consider excluded-volume effects by studying self-avoiding chains. We provide evidence that the coarse-grained potentials developed using the WAMC method obey phenomenological scaling laws, and use simple physical arguments for freely jointed chains to motivate these laws. We show that coarse-grained self-avoiding random walks can reproduce results obtained from simulations of the original, more-detailed chains to a high degree of accuracy, in orders of magnitude less time. A generalized enthalpy based equation of state, which includes thermal electron excitations explicitly, is formulated from simple considerations. Its application to obtain Hugoniot of materials needs simultaneous evaluation of pressure-volume curve and temperature, the latter requiring solution of a differential equation. The errors involved in two recent papers [Huayun et al., J. Appl. Phys. 92, 5917 (2002); 92, 5924 (2002)], which employed this approach, are brought out and discussed. In addition to developing the correct set of equations, the present work also provides a numerical method to implement this approach. Constant pressure specific heat of ions and electrons and ionic enthalpy parameter, needed for applications, are calculated using a three component equation of state. The method is applied to porous Cu with different initial porosities. Comparison of results with experimental data shows good agreement. In the paper, we have considered a nonlinear compartmental mathematical model that assesses the effect of treatment on the dynamics of HIV/AIDS and pneumonia coinfection in a human population at different infection stages. Our model revealed that the disease-free equilibrium points of the HIV/AIDS and pneumonia submodels are both locally and globally asymptotically stable whenever the associated basic reproduction numbers ( R H and R P ) are less than unity. Both the submodel endemic equilibrium points are locally and globally asymptotically stable whenever the associated basic reproduction numbers ( R P and R H ) are greater than unity. The full HIV/AIDS-pneumonia coinfection model has both locally and globally asymptotically stable disease-free equilibrium points whenever the basic reproduction number of the coinfection model R H P is less than unity. Using standard values of parameters collected from different kinds of literature, we found that the numerical values of the basic reproduction numbers of the HIV/AIDS-only submodel and pneumonia-only submodel are 17 and 7, respectively, and the basic reproduction number of the HIV/AIDS-pneumonia coinfection model is max 7 , 17 = 17. Applying sensitive analysis, we identified the most influential parameters to change the behavior of the solution of the considered coinfection dynamical system are the HIV/AIDS and pneumonia transmission rates β 1 and β 2 , respectively. The coinfection model was numerically simulated to investigate the stability of the coinfection endemic equilibrium point, the impacts of transmission rates, and treatment strategies for HIV/AIDS-only, pneumonia-only, and HIV/AIDS-pneumonia coinfected individuals. In this paper, the reliability performance analysis of coupled cyber-physical systems under different network types is investigated. To study the underlying network model, their interactions, and relationships and how cascading failures occur in the interdependent cyber-physical systems, we propose a practical model for interdependent cyber-physical systems using network percolation theory. Besides, for different network models, we also study the effect of cascading failures effect and reveal mathematical analysis of failure propagation in such systems. Then we analyze the reliability of our proposed model caused by random attacks or failures by calculating the size of giant functioning components in interdependent cyber-physical systems. In order to gain an insight into the proposed analysis model, numerical simulation analysis is also provided. The results show that there exists a threshold for the proportion of faulty nodes, beyond which the cyber-physical systems collapse. We also determine the critical values for different system parameters. In this way, the reliability analysis based on network percolation theory can be effectively utilized for anti-attack and protection purposes in coupled cyber-physical systems. Abstract In this paper, we numerically investigate a nanoscale plasmonic biosensor based on Mach-Zehnder interferometry. The operation of Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) biosensor is examined based on two methods. In the first method, in which the transmission of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes is investigated under different refractive indices of sample medium as well as different dimensions, the best transmission rate achieved about 56.6% which is resulted by refractive index variation about 0.045 for the length 12 μm and width 80 nm of the gold layer. Also, the sensitivity, figure of merit (FOM) and quality factor (Q-factor) of MZI are examined for different geometries by utilizing the alternative method. It is realized that for the constant length, increasing the thickness of gold layer has significantly led to increased Q-factor and FOM. On the other hand, considering fixed thickness of the Au layer and three different lengths, the major outcome is that as the length of biosensor increases, the sensitivity, Q-factor as well as FOM follow an upward trend. Finally, inserting two distinct additional gold layers on top of the main gold layer, resulted in an extreme increase for the sensitivity and FOM of the plasmonic MZI biosensors with respect to the MZI biosensor without additional layer. Abstract This paper main goal is aimed at a paradigm shift in the enhancement of heat transfer rate between finned surfaces and surrounding fluid by presenting a novel approach in composite fins. This approach consists in using high thermally conductive coatings on top of the finned substrate in order to increase the local temperature along the fin washed surface. In the present paper a high thermal conductivity coating has been applied to an aeroengine vane of different shape and dimensions subject to icing conditions at high Reynolds numbers and where the main aim was to keep the vane warm as to avoid icing in aerospace applications. Numerical simulations have been carried out to ascertain the range of thickness of the coatings to be used to maximise the wanted effect. Both short Engine Section Stator (ESS) and longer fan Outlet Guide Vane (OGV) have been modelled, having different final goals. In the case of longer OGV, an additional novel design modification has been suggested to enhance further the heat transfer along the vane length by the use of the internal webs. The experimental validation also carried out at much higher Reynolds numbers than that reported in Buffone et al. (2005), demonstrate that the novel concept of heat transfer enhancement in composite fins is a simple and yet powerful strategy in a wide range of Reynolds numbers. A fin analysis has been performed of both the present ESS vane the fins tested in Buffone et al. (2005) at much lower Reynolds numbers and shows that the improvement obtained with the coated fins tested in Buffone et al. (2005) is much larger than the coated ESS vanes investigated in the present study. This said, the present study demonstrates that the use of high conductive coatings in composite fins can keep the ESS vanes ice free, something that was not possible with uncoated vanes. It is important to note that the actual optimal thickness of the thermally conductive coatings is a function of Biot number, fin shape, dimensions and thermal conductivities of fin substrate and coating; depending on the application, a proper design of the fin substrate and coating should be carried out. Summary: This survey paper studies deterministic control systems that integrate three of the most active research areas during the last years: (1) online learning control systems, (2) distributed control of networked multiagent systems, and (3) hybrid dynamical systems (HDSs). The interest for these types of systems has been motivated mainly by two reasons: First, the development of cheap massive computational power and advanced communication technologies, which allows to carry out large computations in complex networked systems, and second, the recent development of a comprehensive theory for HDSs that allows to integrate continuous‐time dynamical systems and discrete‐time dynamical systems in a unified manner, thus providing a unifying modeling language for complex learning‐based control systems. In this paper, we aim to give a comprehensive survey of the current state of the art in the area of online learning control in multiagent systems, presenting an overview of the different types of problems that can be addressed, as well as the most representative control architectures found in the literature. These control architectures are modeled as HDSs, which include as special subsets continuous‐time dynamical systems and discrete‐time dynamical systems. Abstract Spatially distributed networks of large size arise in a variety of science and engineering problems, such as wireless sensor networks and smart power grids. Most of their features can be described by properties of their state-space matrices whose entries have indices in the vertex set of a graph. In this paper, we introduce novel algebras of Beurling type that contain matrices on a connected simple graph having polynomial off-diagonal decay, and we show that they are Banach subalgebras of B (ℓ p) , 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞ , the space of all bounded operators on the space ℓ p of all p -summable sequences. The ℓ p -stability of state-space matrices is an essential hypothesis for the robustness of spatially distributed networks. In this paper, we establish the equivalence among ℓ p -stabilities of matrices in Beurling algebras for different exponents 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞ , with quantitative analysis for the lower stability bounds. Admission of norm-control inversion plays a crucial role in some engineering practice. In this paper, we prove that matrices in Beurling subalgebras of B (ℓ 2) have norm-controlled inversion and we find a norm-controlled polynomial with close to optimal degree. Polynomial estimate to powers of matrices is important for numerical implementation of spatially distributed networks. In this paper, we apply our results on norm-controlled inversion to obtain a polynomial estimate to powers of matrices in Beurling algebras. The polynomial estimate is a noncommutative extension about convolution powers of a complex function and is applicable to estimate the probability of hopping from one agent to another agent in a stationary Markov chain on a spatially distributed network.
