Digital substations have adopted a high amount of information and communication technology (ICT) and cyber–physical systems (CPSs) for monitoring and control. As a result, cyber attacks on substations have been increasing and have become a major concern. An intrusion-detection system (IDS) could be a solution to detect and identify the abnormal behaviors of hackers. In this paper, a Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based IDS is proposed to detect malicious generic object-oriented substation event (GOOSE) communication over the process and station bus network, followed by the multiclassification of the cyber attacks. For training, both the abnormal and the normal substation networks are monitored, captured, and logged, and then the proposed algorithm is applied for distinguishing normal events from abnormal ones within the network communication packets. The designed system is implemented and tested with a real-time IEC 61850 GOOSE message dataset using two different approaches. The experimental results show that the proposed system can successfully detect intrusions with an accuracy of 98%. In recent years, the detection performance of SAR-GMTI (synthetic aperture radar-ground moving target indication) algorithm based on deep learning has always been limited by insufficient measured data due to the heavy operation complexity and high cost of real SAR systems. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an overall DT-based implementation framework for SAR ground moving target intelligent detection tasks. In particular, by virtue of a SAR imaging algorithm, a high-fidelity twin replica of SAR moving targets is established in digital space through parameter traversal based on the prior target characteristics of the obtained measured datasets. Then, the constructed SAR twin datasets is fed into the neural network model to train an intelligent detector by fully learning features of the moving targets and preset the SAR scene in the twin space, which can realize the robust detection of ground moving targets in related practical scenarios with no need for multiple and complex field experiments. Moreover, the effectiveness of the proposed framework is verified on the MiniSAR measured system, and a comparison with traditional CFAR detection method is given simultaneously. Froth flotation is a widespread and important method for mineral separation, significantly influencing the purity and quality of extracted minerals. Traditionally, workers need to control chemical dosages by observing the visual characteristics of flotation froth, but this requires considerable experience and operational skills. This paper designs a deep ensemble learning-based sensor for flotation froth image recognition to monitor actual flotation froth working conditions, so as to assist operators in facilitating chemical dosage adjustments and achieve the industrial goals of promoting concentrate grade and mineral recovery. In our approach, training and validation data on flotation froth images are partitioned in K-fold cross validation, and deep neural network (DNN) based learners are generated through pre-trained DNN models in image-enhanced training data, in order to improve their generalization and robustness. Then, a membership function utilizing the performance information of the DNN-based learners during the validation is proposed to improve the recognition accuracy of the DNN-based learners. Subsequently, a technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS) based on the F1 score is proposed to select the most probable working condition of flotation froth images through a decision matrix composed of the DNN-based learners' predictions via a membership function, which is adopted to optimize the combination process of deep ensemble learning. Biomimetic neuromorphic sensing systems, inspired by the structure and function of biological neural networks, represent a major advancement in the field of sensing technology and artificial intelligence. This review paper focuses on the development and application of electrolyte gated transistors (EGTs) as the core components (synapses and neuros) of these neuromorphic systems. EGTs offer unique advantages, including low operating voltage, high transconductance, and biocompatibility, making them ideal for integrating with sensors, interfacing with biological tissues, and mimicking neural processes. Major advances in the use of EGTs for neuromorphic sensory applications such as tactile sensors, visual neuromorphic systems, chemical neuromorphic systems, and multimode neuromorphic systems are carefully discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and future directions of the field are explored, highlighting the potential of EGT-based biomimetic systems to revolutionize neuromorphic prosthetics, robotics, and human–machine interfaces. Through a comprehensive analysis of the latest research, this review is intended to provide a detailed understanding of the current status and future prospects of biomimetic neuromorphic sensory systems via EGT sensing and integrated technologies. This paper proposes a novel approach to enhance the multichannel fiber optic sensing systems by integrating an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform-based Deep Neural Network (IFFT-DNN) to accurately predict sensor responses despite signals overlapping and crosstalk between sensors. The IFFT-DNN leverages both frequency and time domain information, enabling a comprehensive feature extraction which enhances the prediction accuracy and reliability performance. To investigate the IFFT-DNN's performance, we propose a multichannel water level sensing system based on Free Space Optics (FSO) to measure the water level at multiple points in remote areas. The experimental results demonstrate the system's high precision, with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.07 cm, even in complex conditions. As a public service, municipal waste management at the local and regional levels should be carried out in an environmentally friendly and economically justified manner. Information on the quantity and composition of generated municipal waste is essential for planning activities related to the implementation and optimization of the process. There is a need for reliable forecasts regarding the amount of waste generated in each area. Due to the variability in the waste accumulation rate, this task is difficult to accomplish, especially at the local level. The literature contains many reports on this issue, but there is a lack of studies indicating the preferred method depending on the independent variables, the complexity of the algorithm, the time of implementation, and the quality of the forecast. The results concerning the quality of forecasting methods are difficult to compare due to the use of different sets of independent variables, forecast horizons, and quality assessment indicators. This paper compares the effectiveness of selected forecasting models in predicting the amount of municipal waste collection generated in Polish municipalities. The authors compared nine methods, including artificial neural networks (ANNs), support regression trees (SRTs), rough set theory (RST), multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), and random regression forests (RRFs). The analysis was based on 31 socioeconomic indicators for 2451 municipalities in Poland. The Boruta algorithm was used to select significant variables and eliminate those with little impact on forecasting. The quality of the forecasts was evaluated using eight indicators, such as the absolute percentage error (MAPE), mean absolute error (MAE), and coefficient of determination (R2). A comprehensive evaluation of the forecasting models was carried out using the APEKS method. An analysis of the results showed that the best forecasting methods depended on the set of independent variables and the evaluation criteria adopted. Waste management expenditures, the levels of sanitation and housing infrastructure, and the cost-effectiveness of waste management services were key factors influencing the amount of municipal waste. Additionally, this research indicated that adding more variables does not always improve the quality of forecasts, highlighting the importance of proper selection. The use of a variable selection algorithm, combined with the consideration of the impact of various socioeconomic factors on municipal waste generation, can significantly improve the quality of forecasts. Efficient and effective radar emitter recognition is critical for electronic support measurement (ESM) systems. However, in complex electromagnetic environments, intercepted pulse trains generally contain substantial data noise, including spurious and missing pulses. Currently, radar emitter recognition methods utilizing traditional artificial neural networks (ANNs) like CNNs and RNNs are susceptible to data noise and require intensive computations, posing challenges to meeting the performance demands of modern ESM systems. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) exhibit stronger representational capabilities compared to traditional ANNs due to the temporal dynamics of spiking neurons and richer information encoded in precise spike timing. Furthermore, SNNs achieve higher computational efficiency by performing event-driven sparse addition calculations. In this paper, a lightweight spiking neural network is proposed by combining direct coding, leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neurons, and surrogate gradients to recognize radar emitters. Additionally, an improved SNN for radar emitter recognition is proposed, leveraging the local timing structure of pulses to enhance adaptability to data noise. Generative adversarial networks (or GANs) are a specific deep learning architecture often used for different usages, such as data generation or image-to-image translation. In recent years, this structure has gained increased popularity and has been used in different fields. One area of expertise currently in vogue is the use of GANs to produce synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, and especially expand training datasets for SAR automatic target recognition (ATR). In effect, the complex SAR image formation makes these kind of data rich in information, leading to the use of deep networks in deep learning-based methods. Yet, deep networks also require sufficient data for training. However, contrary to optical images, we generally do not have a substantial number of available SAR images because of their acquisition and labelling cost; GANs are then an interesting tool. Concurrently, how to improve explainability for SAR ATR deep neural networks and how to make their reasoning more transparent have been increasingly explored as model opacity deteriorates trust of users. This paper aims at reviewing how GANs are used with SAR images, but also giving perspectives on how GANs could be used to improve interpretability and explainability of SAR classifiers. Ensuring a safe nighttime environmental perception system relies on the early detection of vulnerable road users with minimal delay and high precision. This paper presents a sensor-fused nighttime environmental perception system by integrating data from thermal and RGB cameras. A new alignment algorithm is proposed to fuse the data from the two camera sensors. The proposed alignment procedure is crucial for effective sensor fusion. To develop a robust Deep Neural Network (DNN) system, nighttime thermal and RGB images were collected under various scenarios, creating a labeled dataset of 32,000 image pairs. Three fusion techniques were explored using transfer learning, alongside two single-sensor models using only RGB or thermal data. Five DNN models were developed and evaluated, with experimental results showing superior performance of fused models over non-fusion counterparts. The late-fusion system was selected for its optimal balance of accuracy and response time. For real-time inferencing, the best model was further optimized, achieving 33 fps on the embedded edge computing device, an 83.33% improvement in inference speed over the system without optimization. These findings are valuable for advancing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADASs) and autonomous vehicle technologies, enhancing pedestrian detection during nighttime to improve road safety and reduce accidents. The automatic detection of smoke by analyzing the video stream acquired by traditional surveillance cameras is becoming a more and more interesting problem for the scientific community thanks to the necessity to prevent fires at the very early stages. The adoption of a smart visual sensor, namely a computer vision algorithm running in real time, allows one to overcome the limitations of standard physical sensors. Nevertheless, this is a very challenging problem, due to the strong similarity of the smoke with other environmental elements like clouds, fog and dust. In addition to this challenge, data available for training deep neural networks is limited and not fully representative of real environments. Within this context, in this paper we propose a new method for smoke detection based on the combination of motion and appearance analysis with a modern convolutional neural network (CNN). Moreover, we propose a new dataset, called the MIVIA Smoke Detection Dataset (MIVIA-SDD), publicly available for research purposes; it consists of 129 videos covering about 28 h of recordings. The proposed hybrid method, trained and evaluated on the proposed dataset, demonstrated to be very effective by achieving a 94% smoke recognition rate and, at the same time, a substantially lower false positive rate if compared with fully deep learning-based approaches (14% vs. 100%). Therefore, the proposed combination of motion and appearance analysis with deep learning CNNs can be further investigated to improve the precision of fire detection approaches. Intelligent control methodologies and artificial intelligence (AI) are essential components for the efficient management of energy storage modern systems, specifically those utilizing superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). Through the implementation of AI algorithms, SMES units are able to optimize their operations in real time, thereby maximizing energy efficiency. To have a more advanced understanding of this issue, DynamoMan is presented in this paper. For use with SMES systems, DynamoMan, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-tuned Fractional Order PID Brain Emotional Learning-Based Intelligent Controller (ANN-FOPID-BELBIC), has been developed. ANN tuning is employed to optimize the key settings of the reward/penalty generator of a BELBIC, which are important for its overall efficacy. Following this, DynamoMan is integrated into the SMES control system and compared to scenarios in which a BELBIC, PID, PI, and P are utilized. The findings indicate that DynamoMan performs considerably better than other models, demonstrating robust and control attributes alongside a considerably reduced period of settling time, especially when incorporated with the power grid. Agricultural sustainability is dependent on the ability to predict crop yield, which is vital for farmers, consumers, and researchers. Most of the works used the amount of rainfall, average monthly temperature, relative humidity, etc. as inputs. In this paper, an attempt was made to predict the yield of the citrus crop (Washington Navel orange, Valencia orange, Murcott mandarin, Fremont mandarin, and Bearss Seedless lime) using weather factors and the accumulated heat units. These variables were used as input parameters in an artificial neural network (ANN) model. The necessary information was gathered during the growing seasons between 2010/2011 and 2021/2022 under Egyptian conditions. Weather factors were daily precipitation, yearly average air temperature, and yearly average of air relative humidity. A base air temperature of 13.0 °C was used to determine the accumulated heat units. The heat use efficiency (HUE) for cultivars was determined. The Bearss Seedless lime had the lowest HUE of 9.5 kg/ha °C day, while the Washington Navel orange had the highest HUE of 20.2 kg/ha °C day. The predictive performance of the ANN model with a structure of 9-20-1 with the backpropagation was evaluated using standard statistical measures. The actual and estimated yields from the ANN model were compared using a testing dataset, resulting in a value of RMSE, MAE, and MAPE of 2.80 t/ha, 2.58 t/ha, and 5.41%, respectively. The performance of the ANN model in the training phase was compared to multiple linear regression (MLR) models using values of R2; for MLR models for all cultivars, R2 ranged between 0.151 and 0.844, while the R2 value for the ANN was 0.87. Moreover, the ANN model gave the best performance criteria for evaluation of citrus yield prediction with a high R2, low root mean squared error, and low mean absolute error compared to the performance criteria of data mining algorithms such as K-nearest neighbor (KNN), KStar, and support vector regression. These encouraging outcomes show how the current ANN model can be used to estimate fruit yields, including citrus fruits and other types of fruit. The novelty of the proposed ANN model lies in the combination of weather parameters and accumulated heat units for accurate citrus yield prediction, specifically tailored for Egyptian regional citrus crops. Furthermore, especially in low- to middle-income countries such as Egypt, the findings of this study can greatly enhance the reliance on statistics when making decisions regarding agriculture and climate change. The citrus industry can benefit greatly from these discoveries, which can help with optimization, harvest planning, and postharvest logistics. As one of the most widely used spread spectrum techniques, the frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) has been widely adopted in both civilian and military secure communications. In this technique, the carrier frequency of the signal hops pseudo-randomly over a large range, compared to the baseband. To capture an FHSS signal, conventional non-cooperative receivers without knowledge of the carrier have to operate at a high sampling rate covering the entire FHSS hopping range, according to the Nyquist sampling theorem. In this paper, we propose an adaptive compressed method for joint carrier and direction of arrival (DOA) estimations of FHSS signals, enabling subsequent non-cooperative processing. The compressed measurement kernels (i.e., non-zero entries in the sensing matrix) have been adaptively designed based on the posterior knowledge of the signal and task-specific information optimization. Moreover, a deep neural network has been designed to ensure the efficiency of the measurement kernel design process. Finally, the signal carrier and DOA are estimated based on the measurement data. Through simulations, the performance of the adaptively designed measurement kernels is proved to be improved over the random measurement kernels. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have shown remarkable performance across a wide range of fields, including image recognition, natural language processing, and speech processing. However, recent studies indicate that DNNs are highly vulnerable to well-crafted adversarial samples, which can cause incorrect classifications and predictions. These samples are so similar to the original ones that they are nearly undetectable by human vision, posing a significant security risk to DNNs in the real world due to the impact of adversarial attacks. Currently, the most common adversarial attack methods explicitly add adversarial perturbations to image samples, often resulting in adversarial samples that are easier to distinguish by humans. To address this issue, we are motivated to develop more effective methods for generating adversarial samples that remain undetectable to human vision. This paper proposes a pixel-level adversarial attack method based on attention mechanism and high-frequency information separation, named DIPA. Specifically, our approach involves constructing an attention suppression loss function and utilizing gradient information to identify and perturb sensitive pixels. By suppressing the model's attention to the correct classes, the neural network is misled to focus on irrelevant classes, leading to incorrect judgments. Unlike previous studies, DIPA enhances the attack of adversarial samples by separating the imperceptible details in image samples to more effectively hide the adversarial perturbation while ensuring a higher attack success rate. Our experimental results demonstrate that under the extreme single-pixel attack scenario, DIPA achieves higher attack success rates for neural network models with various architectures. Graph neural networks (GNNs) are powerful models capable of managing intricate connections in non-Euclidean data, such as social networks, physical systems, chemical structures, and communication networks. Despite their effectiveness, the large-scale and complex nature of graph data demand substantial computational resources and high performance during both training and inference stages, presenting significant challenges, particularly in the context of embedded systems. Recent studies on GNNs have investigated both software and hardware solutions to enhance computational efficiency. Earlier studies on deep neural networks (DNNs) have indicated that methods like reconfigurable hardware and quantization are beneficial in addressing these issues. Unlike DNN research, studies on efficient computational methods for GNNs are less developed and require more exploration. This survey reviews the latest developments in quantization and FPGA-based acceleration for GNNs, showcasing the capabilities of reconfigurable systems (often FPGAs) to offer customized solutions in environments marked by significant sparsity and the necessity for dynamic load management. It also emphasizes the role of quantization in reducing both computational and memory demands through the use of fixed-point arithmetic and streamlined vector formats. This paper concentrates on low-power, resource-limited devices over general hardware accelerators and reviews research applicable to embedded systems. The energy transition towards a low-emission matrix has motivated efforts to reduce the use of fossil fuels in the transportation sector. The growth of the electric mobility market has been consistent in recent years. In Brazil, there has been an accelerated growth in the sales rate of new electric (and hybrid) vehicles (EVs). Fiscal incentives provided by governments, along with the reduction in vehicle costs, are factors contributing to the exponential growth of the EV fleet—creating a favorable environment for the dissemination of new technologies and enabling the participation of players from sectors such as battery manufacturing and charging stations. Considering the international context, the E-Lounge R&D joint initiative aims to evaluate different strategies to economically enable the electric mobility market, exploring EV charging service sales by energy distribution utility companies in Brazil. This work describes the step-by-step development of an ideal model of a charging hub and discusses its operation based on a real deployment, as well as its associated technical and economic feasibility. Using EV charging data based on the E-Lounge's operational behavior, an artificial neural network (ANN) is applied to forecast future energy consumption to each EV charging station. This paper also presents an economic analysis of the E-Lounge case study, which can contribute to proposals for electric vehicle charging ecosystems in the context of smart energy systems. Based on the operational results collected, as well as considering equipment usage projections, it is possible to make EV charging enterprises feasible, even when high investments in infrastructure and equipment (charging stations and battery storage systems) are necessary, since the net present value is positive and the payback period is 4 years. This work contributes by presenting real operational data from a charging hub, a projection model aimed at evaluating future operations, and a realistic economic evaluation model based on a case study implemented in São Paulo, Brazil. The management of large enterprises influences their efficiency and profitability. One of the important aspects is the appropriate management of electricity consumption used for production and daily operation. The problem becomes more complicated when you need to manage not one but a large complex of buildings with heterogeneous purposes. In the paper, we examine real-time series data of electrical energy consumption in a complex of heterogeneous buildings, including offices and warehouses, using time series analysis methods such as the Holt–Winters model and ARIMA/SARIMA model, and neural networks (Deep Neural Network, Recurrent Neural Network, and Long Short-Term Memory). Experimental research was performed on a dataset obtained from an energy consumption meter placed in the building complex, built in different periods, and equipped with a variety of automation devices. The data were collected over a period of four years 2018–2021 in the form of time series. Results show that classic models are good at predicting energy consumption in the mentioned type of buildings. The potential of unconventional hydrocarbon resources has been unlocked since the hydraulic fracturing technique in combination with long horizontal wells was applied to develop this type of reservoir economically. The design and optimization of the fracturing treatment and the stimulated reservoir volume and the forecasting of production performance are crucial for the development and management of such resources. However, the production performance of tight gas reservoirs is a complicated nonlinear problem, described by many parameters loaded with uncertainty. The complexity of the problem influences and inspires the sophistication of the solution to be used. This paper proposed an artificial network model that allows for fast, extended, and accurate analyses of the production performance of multiple fractured unconventional tight gas wells. In the comprehensive approach developed, the reservoir rock parameters, the drainage area, and the hydraulic fracture parameters are treated as a variable input to the model. The analysis is no longer constrained by fixed "shoes box" geometry, and the values of the parameters defining the reservoir and stimulated volume are not limited to a few discrete values. The numerical experiment used to construct a database for model development was designed using a genetically optimized Latin hypercube sampling technique. A special approach was used in the preparation of "blind data", which are crucial for truly reliable model verification. In the result, a developed tool offers an extended rock-fluid description, flexible model, and stimulated reservoir volume dimensioning and parameterization, as well as a high degree of applicability in sensitivity analysis and/or optimization. To enhance the operational efficiency and fault detection accuracy of hydroelectric units, this paper proposes a parallel convolutional neural network model that integrates the Gramian angular summation field (GASF) with an Improved coati optimization algorithm–parallel convolutional neural network (ICOA-PCNN). Additionally, to further improve the model's accuracy in fault identification, a multi-head self-attention mechanism (MSA) and support vector machine (SVM) are introduced for a secondary optimization of the model. Initially, the GASF technique converts one-dimensional time series signals into two-dimensional images, and a COA-CNN dual-branch model is established for feature extraction. To address the issues of uneven population distribution and susceptibility to local optima in the COA algorithm, various optimization strategies are implemented to improve its global search capability. Experimental results indicate that the accuracy of this model reaches 100%, significantly surpassing other nonoptimized models. In this work, we focus on the prediction of the influence of CO2 laser parameters on the kerf properties of cut spruce wood. Laser kerf cutting is mainly characterized by the width of kerf and the width of the heat-affected zone, which depend on the laser power, cutting speed, and structure of the cut wood, represented by the number of cut annual rings. According to the measurement results and ANN prediction results, for lower values of the laser power (P) and cutting speed (v), the effect of annual rings (ARs) is non-negligible. The results of the sensitivity analysis show that the effect of v increases at higher energy density (E) values. With P in the range between 100 and 500 W, v values between 3 and 50 mm·s−1, and AR numbers between 3 and 11, the combination of P = 200 W and v = 50 mm·s−1, regardless of the AR value, leads to the best cut quality for spruce wood. In this paper, the main goal is to show how changes in the input parameters affect the characteristics of the cutting kerf and heat-affected zones for all possible input parameter values. Warm mix flame retardant asphalt mixture can reduce the energy dissipation and harmful gas emissions during asphalt pavement construction, as well as mitigate the adverse effects of road fires. For this, this paper studies the design and performance of a mixture modified with a combination of warm mix agent and flame retardant, and the pavement performance and flame retardancy of the modified mixture are evaluated. Additionally, a flame retardancy prediction model based on the radial basis function (RBF) neural network model is established. On this basis, the principal components analysis (PCA) model is used to analyze the most significant evaluation indicators affecting flame retardancy, and finally, a three-dimensional finite element model is developed to analyze the effects of loading on the pavement structure. The results show that compared to virgin asphalt mixture, the modified mixture shows a reduction in mixing and compaction temperatures by approximately 12 °C. The high-temperature performance of the mixture is improved, while the low-temperature performance and moisture stability slightly decrease, but its flame retardancy is significantly enhanced. The RBF neural network model revealed that the established flame retardancy prediction model has a high accuracy, allowing for precise evaluation of the flame retardancy. Finally, the PCA model identified that the combustion time has a significant effect on the flame retardancy of the asphalt mixture, and the finite element model revealed that the displacements of the warm mix fire retardant asphalt mixture were lower than virgin asphalt mixture in all directions under the loading. In this paper, a technology named SCM−ANN combining physical scattering mechanisms and artificial intelligence is proposed to realize radar cross-section (RCS) extrapolation of non-cooperative conductor targets with higher efficiency. Firstly, an adaptive scattering center (SC) extraction algorithm is used to construct the scattering center model (SCM) for non-cooperative targets from radar echoes in the low-frequency band (LFB). Secondly, an artificial neural network (ANN) is constructed to capture the nonlinear relationship between the real LFB echoes and those reconstructed from the SCM. Finally, the SCM is used to reconstruct echoes in the high-frequency band (HFB), and these reconstructions, together with the trained ANN, optimize the extrapolated HFB RCS. For the SCM−ANN technology, physical mechanistic modes are used for trend prediction, and artificial intelligence is used for regression optimization based on trend prediction. Simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve a 50% frequency extrapolation range, with an average prediction error reduction of up to 40% compared with the traditional scheme. Floods are among the most common disasters, causing loss of life and enormous damage to private property and public infrastructure. Monitoring systems that detect and predict floods help respond quickly in the pre-disaster phase to prevent and mitigate flood risk and damages. Thus, this paper presents a deep neural network (DNN)-based real-time flood monitoring system for embedded Internet of Things (IoT) edge devices. The proposed system fuses long-wave infrared (LWIR) and RGB cameras to overcome a critical drawback of conventional RGB camera-based systems: severe performance deterioration at night. This system recognizes areas occupied by water using a DNN-based semantic segmentation network, whose input is a combination of RGB and LWIR images. Flood warning levels are predicted based on the water occupancy ratio calculated by the water segmentation result. The warning information is delivered to authorized personnel via a mobile message service. For real-time edge computing, the heavy semantic segmentation network is simplified by removing unimportant channels while maintaining performance by utilizing the network slimming technique. Experiments were conducted based on the dataset acquired from the sensor module with RGB and LWIR cameras installed in a flood-prone area. The results revealed that the proposed system successfully conducts water segmentation and correctly sends flood warning messages in both daytime and nighttime. As the demand for spatial positioning continues to grow, positioning methods based on inertial measurement units (IMUs) are emerging as a promising research topic due to their low cost and robustness against environmental interference. These methods are particularly well suited for global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-denied environments and challenging visual scenarios. While existing algorithms for position estimation using IMUs have demonstrated some effectiveness, there is still significant room for improvement in terms of estimation accuracy. Current approaches primarily treat IMU data as simple time series, neglecting the frequency-domain characteristics of IMU signals. This paper emphasizes the importance of frequency-domain information in IMU signals and proposes a novel neural network, WINNet (Wavelet Inertial Neural Network), which integrates time- and frequency-domain signals using a wavelet transform for spatial positioning with inertial sensors. Additionally, we collected ground-truth data using a LiDAR setup and combined it with the TLIO dataset to form a new IMU spatial positioning dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the current state-of-the-art inertial neural network algorithms in terms of the ATE, RTE, and drift error metrics overall. In the process of metal wire and additive manufacturing, due to changes in temperature, humidity, current, voltage, and other parameters, as well as the failure of machinery and equipment, a failure may occur in the manufacturing process that seriously affects the current situation of production efficiency and product quality. Based on the demand for monitoring of the key impact parameters of additive manufacturing, this paper develops a parameter monitoring and prediction system for the additive manufacturing feeding process to provide a basis for future fault diagnosis. The fault diagnosis and prediction system for metal wire supply and additive manufacturing utilizes STM 32 as its core, enabling the capture and transmission of temperature, humidity, current, and voltage data. The upper computer system, designed on the LabVIEW 2019 virtual instrument platform, incorporates an LSTM neural network model and facilitates a connection between LabVIEW and MATLAB 2019 to achieve the prediction function. With the increasing frequency and severity of disasters and accidents, there is a growing need for efficient emergency alert systems. The ultra-high definition (UHD) broadcasting service based on Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) 3.0, a leading terrestrial digital broadcasting system, offers such capabilities, including a wake-up function for minimizing damage through early alerts. In case of a disaster situation, the emergency alert wake-up signal is transmitted, allowing UHD TVs to be activated, enabling individuals to receive emergency alerts and access emergency broadcasting content. However, conventional methods for detecting the bootstrap signal, essential for this function, typically require an ATSC 3.0 demodulator. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning-based method capable of detecting an emergency wake-up signal without the need for an ATSC 3.0. The proposed method leverages deep learning techniques, specifically a deep neural network (DNN) structure for bootstrap detection and a convolutional neural network (CNN) structure for wake-up signal demodulation and to detect the bootstrap and 2 bit emergency alert wake-up signal. Specifically, our method eliminates the need for Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), frequency synchronization, and interleaving processes typically required by a demodulator. By applying a deep learning in the time domain, we simplify the detection process, allowing for the detection of an emergency alert signal without the full suite of demodulator components required for ATSC 3.0. Furthermore, we have verified the performance of the deep learning-based method using ATSC 3.0-based RF signals and a commercial Software-Defined Radio (SDR) platform in a real environment. This paper explores the application of multi-objective optimization techniques, including MOPSO, NSGA II, and SPEA2, to optimize the hyperparameters of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and support vector machines (SVMs) for predicting the physical properties of textile polymer composite materials (TPCMs). The optimization process utilizes data on the physical characteristics of the constituent fibers and fabrics used to manufacture these composites. Human Activity Recognition (HAR) plays an important role in the automation of various tasks related to activity tracking in such areas as healthcare and eldercare (telerehabilitation, telemonitoring), security, ergonomics, entertainment (fitness, sports promotion, human–computer interaction, video games), and intelligent environments. This paper tackles the problem of real-time recognition and repetition counting of 12 types of exercises performed during athletic workouts. Our approach is based on the deep neural network model fed by the signal from a 9-axis motion sensor (IMU) placed on the chest. The model can be run on mobile platforms (iOS, Android). We discuss design requirements for the system and their impact on data collection protocols. We present architecture based on an encoder pretrained with contrastive learning. Compared to end-to-end training, the presented approach significantly improves the developed model's quality in terms of accuracy (F1 score, MAPE) and robustness (false-positive rate) during background activity. The latest survey results show an increase in accidents on the roads involving pedestrians and cyclists. The reasons for such situations are many, the fault actually lies on both sides. Equipping vehicles, especially autonomous vehicles, with frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar and dedicated algorithms for analyzing signals in the time–frequency domain as well as algorithms for recognizing objects in radar imaging through deep neural networks can positively affect safety. This paper presents a method for recognizing and distinguishing a group of objects based on radar signatures of objects and a special convolutional neural network structure. The proposed approach is based on a database of radar signatures generated on pedestrian, cyclist, and car models in a Matlab environment. The obtained results of simulations and positive tests provide a basis for the application of the system in many sectors and areas of the economy. Innovative aspects of the work include the method of discriminating between multiple objects on a single radar signature, the dedicated architecture of the convolutional neural network, and the use of a method of generating a custom input database. In this paper, we propose a lightweight U-net architecture neural network model based on Dark Channel Prior (DCP) for efficient haze (fog) removal with a single input. The existing DCP requires high computational complexity in its operation. These computations are challenging to accelerate, and the problem is exacerbated when dealing with high-resolution images (videos), making it very difficult to apply to general-purpose applications. Our proposed model addresses this issue by employing a two-stage neural network structure, replacing the computationally complex operations of the conventional DCP with easily accelerated convolution operations to achieve high-quality fog removal. Furthermore, our proposed model is designed with an intuitive structure using a relatively small number of parameters (2M), utilizing resources efficiently. These features demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed model for fog removal. The experimental results show that the proposed neural network model achieves an average Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of 26.65 dB and a Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) of 0.88, indicating an improvement in the average PSNR of 11.5 dB and in SSIM of 0.22 compared to the conventional DCP. This shows that the proposed neural network achieves comparable results to CNN-based neural networks that have achieved SOTA-class performance, despite its intuitive structure with a relatively small number of parameters. Simple Summary: Breast cancer is a significant cause of female cancer-related deaths in the US. Checking how severe the cancer is helps in planning treatment. Modern AI methods are good at grading cancer, but they are not used much in hospitals yet. We developed and utilized ensemble deep learning algorithms for addressing the tasks of classifying (1) breast cancer subtype and (2) breast cancer invasiveness from whole slide image (WSI) histopathology slides. The ensemble models used were based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) known for extracting distinctive features crucial for accurate classification. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive analysis of these models and the used methodology for breast cancer diagnosis tasks. Cancer diagnosis and classification are pivotal for effective patient management and treatment planning. In this study, a comprehensive approach is presented utilizing ensemble deep learning techniques to analyze breast cancer histopathology images. Our datasets were based on two widely employed datasets from different centers for two different tasks: BACH and BreakHis. Within the BACH dataset, a proposed ensemble strategy was employed, incorporating VGG16 and ResNet50 architectures to achieve precise classification of breast cancer histopathology images. Introducing a novel image patching technique to preprocess a high-resolution image facilitated a focused analysis of localized regions of interest. The annotated BACH dataset encompassed 400 WSIs across four distinct classes: Normal, Benign, In Situ Carcinoma, and Invasive Carcinoma. In addition, the proposed ensemble was used on the BreakHis dataset, utilizing VGG16, ResNet34, and ResNet50 models to classify microscopic images into eight distinct categories (four benign and four malignant). For both datasets, a five-fold cross-validation approach was employed for rigorous training and testing. Preliminary experimental results indicated a patch classification accuracy of 95.31% (for the BACH dataset) and WSI image classification accuracy of 98.43% (BreakHis). Channel estimation accuracy significantly affects the performance of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In the literature, there are quite a few channel estimation methods. However, the performances of these methods deteriorate considerably when the wireless channels suffer from nonlinear distortions and interferences. Machine learning (ML) shows great potential for solving nonparametric problems. This paper proposes ML-based channel estimation methods for systems with comb-type pilot patterns and random pilot symbols, such as ATSC 3.0. We compare their performances with conventional channel estimations in ATSC 3.0 systems for linear and nonlinear channel models. We also evaluate the robustness of the ML-based methods against channel model mismatch and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) mismatch. The results show that the ML-based channel estimations achieve good mean squared error (MSE) performance for linear and nonlinear channels if the channel statistics used for the training stage match those of the deployment stage. Otherwise, the ML estimation models may overfit the training channel, leading to poor deployment performance. In the proposed paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm is applied to predict the electronic circuit outputs of voltage signals in Industry 4.0/5.0 scenarios. This approach is suitable to predict possible uncorrected behavior of control circuits affected by unknown noises, and to reproduce a testbed method simulating the noise effect influencing the amplification of an input sinusoidal voltage signal, which is a basic and fundamental signal for controlled manufacturing systems. The performed simulations take into account different noise signals changing their time-domain trend and frequency behavior to prove the possibility of predicting voltage outputs when complex signals are considered at the control circuit input, including additive disturbs and noises. The results highlight that it is possible to construct a good ANN training model by processing only the registered voltage output signals without considering the noise profile (which is typically unknown). The proposed model behaves as an electronic black box for Industry 5.0 manufacturing processes automating circuit and machine tuning procedures. Accidents due to defective railway lines and derailments are common disasters that are observed frequently in Southeast Asian countries. It is imperative to run proper diagnosis over the detection of such faults to prevent such accidents. However, manual detection of such faults periodically can be both time-consuming and costly. In this paper, we have proposed a Deep Learning (DL)-based algorithm for automatic fault detection in railway tracks, which we termed an Ensembled Convolutional Autoencoder ResNet-based Recurrent Neural Network (ECARRNet). We compared its output with existing DL techniques in the form of several pre-trained DL models to investigate railway tracks and determine whether they are defective or not while considering commonly prevalent faults such as—defects in rails and fasteners. Moreover, we manually collected the images from different railway tracks situated in Bangladesh and made our dataset. After comparing our proposed model with the existing models, we found that our proposed architecture has produced the highest accuracy among all the previously existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) architecture, with an accuracy of 93.28% on the full dataset. Additionally, we split our dataset into two parts having two different types of faults, which are fasteners and rails. We ran the models on those two separate datasets, obtaining accuracies of 98.59% and 92.06% on rail and fastener, respectively. Model explainability techniques like Grad-CAM and LIME were used to validate the result of the models, where our proposed model ECARRNet was seen to correctly classify and detect the regions of faulty railways effectively compared to the previously existing transfer learning models. The increasing growth in knowledge about the functioning of the nervous system of mammals and humans, as well as the significant neuromorphic technology developments in recent decades, has led to the emergence of a large number of brain–computer interfaces and neuroprosthetics for regenerative medicine tasks. Neurotechnologies have traditionally been developed for therapeutic purposes to help or replace motor, sensory or cognitive abilities damaged by injury or disease. They also have significant potential for memory enhancement. However, there are still no fully developed neurotechnologies and neural interfaces capable of restoring or expanding cognitive functions, in particular memory, in mammals or humans. In this regard, the search for new technologies in the field of the restoration of cognitive functions is an urgent task of modern neurophysiology, neurotechnology and artificial intelligence. The hippocampus is an important brain structure connected to memory and information processing in the brain. The aim of this paper is to propose an approach based on deep neural networks for the prediction of hippocampal signals in the CA1 region based on received biological input in the CA3 region. We compare the results of prediction for two widely used deep architectures: reservoir computing (RC) and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. This paper presents various machine learning methods with different text features that are explored and evaluated to determine the authorship of the texts in the example of the Azerbaijani language. We consider techniques like artificial neural network, convolutional neural network, random forest, and support vector machine. These techniques are used with different text features like word length, sentence length, combined word length and sentence length, n-grams, and word frequencies. The models were trained and tested on the works of many famous Azerbaijani writers. The results of computer experiments obtained by utilizing a comparison of various techniques and text features were analyzed. The paper presents research on measuring and the possibility of prediction of noise levels on the left and right sides of the operator within the cabin of an agricultural tractor when moving across various agrotechnical surfaces, considering movement velocity and tire pressures while employing machine learning techniques. Noise level measurements were conducted on a LANDINI POWERFARM 100 type tractor, and aligned with standards (HRN ISO 5008, HRN ISO 6396 and HRN ISO 5131). The obtained noise values were divided into two data sets (left and right set) and processed using multiple linear regression (mlr) and three machine learning methods (gradient boosting machine (gbm); support vector machine using radial basis function kernel (svmRadial); monotone multi-layer perceptron neural network (monmlp)). The most accurate method, considering surfaces, from the left side data set—(R2 0.515–0.955); (RMSE 0.302–0.704); (MAE 0.225–0.488)—and the right side—(R2 0.555–0.955); (RMSE 0.180–0.969); (MAE 0.139–0.644)—was monmlp predominantly, and to a lesser extent svmRadial. On analyzing the total data sets from the left and right sides regarding surfaces, gbm emerged as the most accurate method. The application of machine learning methods demonstrated data accuracy, yet in future research, measurements on certain surfaces may need to be repeated multiple times potentially to improve accuracy further. The anthropogenic climate crisis results in the gradual loss of tree species in locations where they were previously able to grow. This leads to increasing workloads and requirements for foresters and arborists as they are forced to restructure their forests and city parks. The advancements in computer vision (CV)—especially in supervised deep learning (DL)—can help cope with these new tasks. However, they rely on large, carefully annotated datasets to produce good and generalizable models. This paper presents BAMFORESTS: a dataset with 27,160 individually delineated tree crowns in 105 ha of very-high-resolution UAV imagery gathered with two different sensors from two drones. BAMFORESTS covers four areas of coniferous, mixed, and deciduous forests and city parks. The labels contain instance segmentations of individual trees, and the proposed splits are balanced by tree species and vitality. Furthermore, the dataset contains the corrected digital surface model (DSM), representing tree heights. BAMFORESTS is annotated in the COCO format and is especially suited for training deep neural networks (DNNs) to solve instance segmentation tasks. The measurement of sea surface height (SSH), which is of great importance in the field of oceanography, can be obtained through the innovative technique of GNSS-R for remote sensing. This research utilizes the dataset from spaceborne GNSS-R platforms, the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) and FengYun-3E (FY-3E), as the primary source of data for retrieving sea surface height (SSH). The utilization of artificial neural networks (ANNs) allows for the accurate estimation of ocean surface height with a precision of meter-level accuracy throughout the period of 1–17 August 2022. As a traditional machine learning method, an ANN is employed to extract pertinent data features, facilitating the acquisition of precise sea surface height estimations. Additionally, separate models are devised for both GNSS-R platforms, one based on constant velocity (CV) and the other on constant acceleration (CA). The Interactive Multiple Model (IMM) is utilized as the main method to combine the four models and convert the likelihood of each model. The transition between the models allows the filters to effectively adapt to dynamic changes and complex environments. This approach relies on the fundamental notion of the Kalman filter (KF), which showcases robust noise handling capabilities in predicting the SSH, separately. The results demonstrate that the model interaction technology is capable of efficiently filtering and integrating SSH data, yielding a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 1.03 m. This corresponds to a 9.84% enhancement compared to the retrieved height from CYGNSS and a 37.19% enhancement compared to the retrieved height from FY-3E. The model proposed in this paper provides a potential scheme for the GNSS-R data fusion of multiple platforms and multiple models. In recent years, the use of deep neural network in effective network feature extraction and the design of efficient and high-precision hyperspectral image classification algorithms has gradually become a research hotspot for scholars. However, due to the difficulty of obtaining hyperspectral images and the high cost of annotation, the training samples are very limited. In order to cope with the small sample problem, researchers often deepen the network model and use the attention mechanism to extract features; however, as the network model continues to deepen, the gradient disappears, the feature extraction ability is insufficient, and the computational cost is high. Therefore, how to make full use of the spectral and spatial information in limited samples has gradually become a difficult problem. In order to cope with such problems, this paper proposes two-branch multiscale spatial–spectral feature aggregation with a self-attention mechanism for a hyperspectral image classification model (FHDANet); the model constructs a dense two-branch pyramid structure, which can achieve the high efficiency extraction of joint spatial–spectral feature information and spectral feature information, reduce feature loss to a large extent, and strengthen the model's ability to extract contextual information. A channel–space attention module, ECBAM, is proposed, which greatly improves the extraction ability of the model for salient features, and a spatial information extraction module based on the deep feature fusion strategy HLDFF is proposed, which fully strengthens feature reusability and mitigates the feature loss problem brought about by the deepening of the model. Compared with five hyperspectral image classification algorithms, SVM, SSRN, A2S2K-ResNet, HyBridSN, SSDGL, RSSGL and LANet, this method significantly improves the classification performance on four representative datasets. Three-wheeled omnidirectional mobile robots (TOMRs) are widely used to accomplish precise transportation tasks in narrow environments owing to their stability, flexible operation, and heavy loads. However, these robots are susceptible to slippage. For wheeled robots, almost all faults and slippage will directly affect the power consumption. Thus, using the energy consumption model data and encoder data in the healthy condition as a reference to diagnose robot slippage and other system faults is the main issue considered in this paper. We constructed an energy model for the TOMR and analyzed the factors that affect the power consumption in detail, such as the position of the gravity center. The study primarily focuses on the characteristic relationship between power consumption and speed when the robot experiences slippage or common faults, including control system faults. Finally, we present the use of a table-based artificial neural network (ANN) to indicate the type of fault by comparing the modeled data with the measured data. Simple Summary: The diagnosis of oral cancer can require multiple biopsies to increase the likelihood of sampling the most pathologic site within a lesion. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables the examination of subsurface morphology and has shown potential in biopsy guidance. OCT captures changes in tissue stratification related to depth, topology, and presence of the epithelial-stromal boundary, which are structural biomarkers for pre-invasive and invasive oral cancer. This study presents a neural network pipeline to simplify OCT interpretation by providing information about epithelial depth and stratification through simple en face maps. U-net models were employed to segment the boundaries of the epithelial layer, and supporting convolutional neural networks were used for identification of the imaging field and artifacts. Non-cancerous, precancerous, and cancerous pathologies across the oral cavity were evaluated. The predictions demonstrate as-good-as or better agreement than inter-rater agreement, suggesting strong predictive power. This paper aims to simplify the application of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for the examination of subsurface morphology in the oral cavity and reduce barriers towards the adoption of OCT as a biopsy guidance device. The aim of this work was to develop automated software tools for the simplified analysis of the large volume of data collected during OCT. Imaging and corresponding histopathology were acquired in-clinic using a wide-field endoscopic OCT system. An annotated dataset (n = 294 images) from 60 patients (34 male and 26 female) was assembled to train four unique neural networks. A deep learning pipeline was built using convolutional and modified u-net models to detect the imaging field of view (network 1), detect artifacts (network 2), identify the tissue surface (network 3), and identify the presence and location of the epithelial–stromal boundary (network 4). The area under the curve of the image and artifact detection networks was 1.00 and 0.94, respectively. The Dice similarity score for the surface and epithelial–stromal boundary segmentation networks was 0.98 and 0.83, respectively. Deep learning (DL) techniques can identify the location and variations in the epithelial surface and epithelial–stromal boundary in OCT images of the oral mucosa. Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electric vehicles, energy storage power stations, and many other applications. Accurate and reliable monitoring of battery health status and remaining capacity is the key to establish a lithium-ion cell management system. In this paper, based on a Bayesian optimization algorithm, a deep neural network is structured to evaluate the whole charging curve of the battery using partial charging curve data as input. A 0.74 Ah battery is used for experiments, and the effect of different input data lengths is also investigated to check the high flexibility of the approach. The consequences show that using only 20 points of partial charging data as input, the whole charging profile of a cell can be exactly predicted with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of less than 19.16 mAh (2.59% of the nominal capacity of 0.74 Ah), and its mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is less than 1.84%. In addition, critical information including battery state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH) can be extracted in this way to provide a basis for safe and long-lasting battery operation. Using multiple input power sources increases the reliability of electric vehicles compared to a single source. However, the inclusion of other sources exhibits complexity in the controller system, such as computing time, program difficulty, and switching speed to connect or disconnect the input power to load. To ensure optimal performance and avoid overloading issues, the EV system needs sophisticated control. This work introduces a machine-learning-based controller using an artificial neural network to solve these problems. This paper describes the detailed power management control methodology using multiple sources like solar PV, fuel cells, and batteries. Novel control with an instantaneous reference current scheme is used to manage the input power sources to satisfy the power demand of electric vehicles. The proposed work executes the power split-up operation with standard and actual drive cycles and maximum power point tracking for PV panels using MATLAB Simulink. Finally, power management with a machine learning technique is implemented in an experimental analysis with the LabVIEW software, and an FPGA controller is used to control a 48 V, 1 kW permanent-magnet synchronous machine. In order to improve the reliability and life of the wind turbine, this paper takes the rolling bearing in the experimental platform of the wind turbine as the research object. In order to obtain the intrinsic mode function (IMF) of each fault type, the original signals of different fault states of the rolling bearing on the experimental platform are decomposed by using the overall average empirical mode decomposition method (EEMD) and the wavelet packet decomposition method (WPD), respectively. Then the energy ratio of the IMF component of the different types of faults to the total energy value is calculated and the eigenvectors of different types of faults are constructed. The extreme learning machine (ELM) and probabilistic neural network (PNN) are used to learn fault types and eigenvector samples to identify the faults of the rolling bearing. It is found that the bearing fault characteristics obtained by the WPD method are more obvious, and the results obtained by the same recognition method are ideal; and the PNN method is obviously superior to the extreme learning machine method in bearing fault recognition rate. Chemical warfare agents pose a serious threat due to their extreme toxicity, necessitating swift the identification of chemical gases and individual responses to the identified threats. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy offers a method for remote material analysis, particularly in detecting colorless and odorless chemical agents. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network utilizing a semi-supervised autoencoder (SSAE) for the classification of chemical gases based on FTIR spectra. In contrast to traditional methods, the SSAE concurrently trains an autoencoder and a classifier attached to a latent vector of the autoencoder, enhancing feature extraction for classification. The SSAE was evaluated on laboratory-collected FTIR spectra, demonstrating a superior classification performance compared to existing methods. The efficacy of the SSAE lies in its ability to generate denser cluster distributions in latent vectors, thereby enhancing gas classification. This study established a consistent experimental environment for hyperparameter optimization, offering valuable insights into the influence of latent vectors on classification performance. The paper introduces a computer vision methodology for detecting pitting corrosion in gas pipelines. To achieve this, a dataset comprising 576,000 images of pipelines with and without pitting corrosion was curated. A custom-designed and optimized convolutional neural network (CNN) was employed for binary classification, distinguishing between corroded and non-corroded images. This CNN architecture, despite having relatively few parameters compared to existing CNN classifiers, achieved a notably high classification accuracy of 98.44%. The proposed CNN outperformed many contemporary classifiers in its efficacy. By leveraging deep learning, this approach effectively eliminates the need for manual inspection of pipelines for pitting corrosion, thus streamlining what was previously a time-consuming and cost-ineffective process. This paper presents the results of a study on data preprocessing and modeling for predicting corrosion in water pipelines of a steel industrial plant. The use case is a cooling circuit consisting of both direct and indirect cooling. In the direct cooling circuit, water comes into direct contact with the product, whereas in the indirect one, it does not. In this study, advanced machine learning techniques, such as extreme gradient boosting and deep neural networks, have been employed for two distinct applications. Firstly, a virtual sensor was created to estimate the corrosion rate based on influencing process variables, such as pH and temperature. Secondly, a predictive tool was designed to foresee the future evolution of the corrosion rate, considering past values of both influencing variables and the corrosion rate. The results show that the most suitable algorithm for the virtual sensor approach is the dense neural network, with MAPE values of (25 ± 4)% and (11 ± 4)% for the direct and indirect circuits, respectively. In contrast, different results are obtained for the two circuits when following the predictive tool approach. For the primary circuit, the convolutional neural network yields the best results, with MAPE = 4% on the testing set, whereas for the secondary circuit, the LSTM recurrent network shows the highest prediction accuracy, with MAPE = 9%. In general, models employing temporal windows have emerged as more suitable for corrosion prediction, with model performance significantly improving with a larger dataset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The degradation of the cutting tool and its optimal replacement is a major problem in machining given the variability in this degradation even under constant cutting conditions. Therefore, monitoring the degradation of cutting tools is an important part of the process in order to replace the tool at the optimal time and thus reduce operating costs. In this paper, a cutting tool degradation monitoring technique is proposed using bootstrap-based artificial neural networks. Different indicators from the turning operation are used as input to the approach: the RMS value of the cutting force and torque, the machining duration, and the total machined length. They are used by the approach to estimate the size of the flank wear (VB). Different neural networks are tested but the best results are achieved with an architecture containing two hidden layers: the first one containing six neurons with a Tanh activation function and the second one containing six neurons with an ReLu activation function. The novelty of the approach makes it possible, by using the bootstrap approach, to determine a confidence interval around the prediction. The results show that the networks are able to accurately track the degradation and detect the end of life of the cutting tools in a timely manner, but also that the confidence interval allows an estimate of the possible variation of the prediction to be made, thus helping in the decision for optimal tool replacement policies.
