From the general to the specific this paper examines the concept of quality as it applies to university libraries by discussing several standards and approaches to quality, the new European space for Higher Education and how it impinges on university library quality, which are considered as supportive of research activities in this new space. The stages of quality assessment -- self-evaluation, external evaluation and final report -- are also discussed. Finally, focusing on those university libraries awarded the 2006 Quality certificate, the improvement actions set by each are analysed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
