This paper introduces a ranking and selection approach to psychoacoustic and psychophysical experimentation, with the aim of identifying top-ranking samples in listening experiments with minimal pairwise comparisons. We draw inspiration from sports tournament designs and propose to adopt modified knockout (KO) tournaments. Two variants of modified KO tournaments are described, which adapt the tree selection sorting algorithm and the replacement selection algorithm known from computer science. To validate the proposed method, a listening experiment is conducted, where binaural renderings of seven chamber music halls are compared regarding loudness and reverberance. The rankings obtained by the modified KO tournament method are compared to those obtained from a traditional round-robin (RR) design, where all possible pairs are compared. Moreover, the paper presents simulations to illustrate the method's robustness when choosing different parameters and assuming different underlying data distributions. The study's findings demonstrate that modified KO tournaments are more efficient than full RR designs in terms of the number of comparisons required for identifying the top ranking samples. We have found that incorporating computer programming into introductory physics requires problems suited for numerical treatment while still maintaining ties with the analytical themes in a typical introductory-level university physics course. In this paper, we discuss a numerical adaptation of a system commonly encountered in the introductory physics curriculum: the dynamics of an object constrained to move along a curved path. A numerical analysis of this problem that includes a computer animation can provide many insights and pedagogical avenues not possible with the usual analytical treatment. We present two approaches for computing the instantaneous kinematic variables of an object constrained to move along a path described by a mathematical function. The first is a pedagogical approach, appropriate for introductory students in the calculus-based sequence. The security of messages encoded via the widely used RSA public key encryption system rests on the enormous computational effort required to find the prime factors of a large number N using classical (conventional) computers. In 1994 Peter Shor showed that for sufficiently large N, a quantum computer could perform the factoring with much less computational effort. This paper endeavors to explain, in a fashion comprehensible to the nonexpert, the RSA encryption protocol; the various quantum computer manipulations constituting the Shor algorithm; how the Shor algorithm performs the factoring; and the precise sense in which a quantum computer employing Shor's algorithm can be said to accomplish the factoring of very large numbers with less computational effort than a classical computer. It is made apparent that factoring N generally requires many successive runs of the algorithm. Our analysis reveals that the probability of achieving a successful factorization on a single run is about twice as large as commonly quoted in the literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
