Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many works have been published proposing solutions to the problems that arose in this scenario. In this vein, one of the topics that attracted the most attention is the development of computer-based strategies to detect COVID-19 from thoracic medical imaging, such as chest X-ray (CXR) and computerized tomography scan (CT scan). By searching for works already published on this theme, we can easily find thousands of them. This is partly explained by the fact that the most severe worldwide pandemic emerged amid the technological advances recently achieved, and also considering the technical facilities to deal with the large amount of data produced in this context. Even though several of these works describe important advances, we cannot overlook the fact that others only use well-known methods and techniques without a more relevant and critical contribution. Hence, differentiating the works with the most relevant contributions is not a trivial task. The number of citations obtained by a paper is probably the most straightforward and intuitive way to verify its impact on the research community. Aiming to help researchers in this scenario, we present a review of the top-100 most cited papers in this field of investigation according to the Google Scholar search engine. We evaluate the distribution of the top-100 papers taking into account some important aspects, such as the type of medical imaging explored, learning settings, segmentation strategy, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), and finally, the dataset and code availability. With the rapid development and widespread application of blockchain technology in recent years, smart contracts running on blockchains often face security vulnerability problems, resulting in significant economic losses. Unlike traditional programs, smart contracts cannot be modified once deployed, and vulnerabilities cannot be remedied. Therefore, the vulnerability detection of smart contracts has become a research focus. Most existing vulnerability detection methods are based on rules defined by experts, which are inefficient and have poor scalability. Although there have been studies using machine learning methods to extract contract features for vulnerability detection, the features considered are singular, and it is impossible to fully utilize smart contract information. In order to overcome the limitations of existing methods, this paper proposes a smart contract vulnerability detection method based on deep learning and multimodal decision fusion. This method also considers the code semantics and control structure information of smart contracts. It integrates the source code, operation code, and control-flow modes through the multimodal decision fusion method. The deep learning method extracts five features used to represent contracts and achieves high accuracy and recall rates. The experimental results show that the detection accuracy of our method for arithmetic vulnerability, re-entrant vulnerability, transaction order dependence, and Ethernet locking vulnerability can reach 91.6%, 90.9%, 94.8%, and 89.5%, respectively, and the detected AUC values can reach 0.834, 0.852, 0.886, and 0.825, respectively. This shows that our method has a good vulnerability detection effect. With the expansion of wireless mobile networks into both the daily lives of individuals as well as into the widely developing market of connected devices, communication is an increasingly attractive target for attackers. As the complexity of mobile cellular systems grows and the respective countermeasures are implemented to secure data transmissions, the attacks have become increasingly sophisticated on the one hand, but at the same time the system complexity can open up expanded opportunities for security and privacy breaches. After an in-depth summary of possible entry points to attacks to mobile networks, this paper first briefly reviews the basic principles of the physical layer implementation of 4G/5G systems, then gives an overview of possible attacks from a physical layer perspective. It also provides an overview of the software frameworks and hardware tool-software defined radios currently in use for experimenting with 4G/5G mobile networks, and it discusses their basic capabilities. In the final part, the paper summarizes the currently most promising families of techniques to detect illegitimate base stations—the machine-learning-based, localization-based, and behavior-based methods. Assessments of stress can be performed using physiological signals, such as electroencephalograms (EEGs) and galvanic skin response (GSR). Commercialized systems that are used to detect stress with EEGs require a controlled environment with many channels, which prohibits their daily use. Fortunately, there is a rise in the utilization of wearable devices for stress monitoring, offering more flexibility. In this paper, we developed a wearable monitoring system that integrates both EEGs and GSR. The novelty of our proposed device is that it only requires one channel to acquire both physiological signals. Through sensor fusion, we achieved an improved accuracy, lower cost, and improved ease of use. We tested the proposed system experimentally on twenty human subjects. We estimated the power spectrum of the EEG signals and utilized five machine learning classifiers to differentiate between two levels of mental stress. Furthermore, we investigated the optimum electrode location on the scalp when using only one channel. Our results demonstrate the system's capability to classify two levels of mental stress with a maximum accuracy of 70.3% when using EEGs alone and 84.6% when using fused EEG and GSR data. Tool condition monitoring technology is an indispensable part of intelligent manufacturing. Most current research focuses on complex signal processing techniques or advanced deep learning algorithms to improve prediction performance without fully leveraging the end-to-end advantages of deep learning. The challenge lies in transforming multi-sensor raw data into input data suitable for direct model feeding, all while minimizing data scale and preserving sufficient temporal interpretation of tool wear. However, there is no clear reference standard for this so far. In light of this, this paper innovatively explores the processing methods that transform raw data into input data for deep learning models, a process known as an input paradigm. This paper introduces three new input paradigms: the downsampling paradigm, the periodic paradigm, and the subsequence paradigm. Then an improved hybrid model that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) was employed to validate the model's performance. The subsequence paradigm demonstrated considerable superiority in prediction results based on the PHM2010 dataset, as the newly generated time series maintained the integrity of the raw data. Further investigation revealed that, with 120 subsequences and the temporal indicator being the maximum value, the model's mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) were the lowest after threefold cross-validation, outperforming several classical and contemporary methods. The methods explored in this paper provide references for designing input data for deep learning models, helping to enhance the end-to-end potential of deep learning models, and promoting the industrial deployment and practical application of tool condition monitoring systems. A deep-seated landslide could release numerous microseismic signals from creep-slip movement, which includes a rock-soil slip from the slope surface and a rock-soil shear rupture in the subsurface. Machine learning can effectively enhance the classification of microseismic signals in landslide seismic monitoring and interpret the mechanical processes of landslide motion. In this paper, eight sets of triaxial seismic sensors were deployed inside the deep-seated landslide, Jiuxianping, China, and a large number of microseismic signals related to the slope movement were obtained through 1-year-long continuous monitoring. All the data were passed through the seismic event identification mode, the ratio of the long-time average and short-time average. We selected 11 days of data, manually classified 4131 data into eight categories, and created a microseismic event database. Classical machine learning algorithms and ensemble learning algorithms were tested in this paper. In order to evaluate the seismic event classification performance of each algorithmic model, we evaluated the proposed algorithms through the dimensions of the accuracy, precision, and recall of each model. The validation results demonstrated that the best performing decision tree algorithm among the classical machine learning algorithms had an accuracy of 88.75%, while the ensemble algorithms, including random forest, Gradient Boosting Trees, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Light Gradient Boosting Machine, had an accuracy range from 93.5% to 94.2% and also achieved better results in the combined evaluation of the precision, recall, and F1 score. The specific classification tests for each microseismic event category showed the same results. Understanding road conditions is essential for implementing effective road safety measures and driving solutions. Road situations encompass the day-to-day conditions of roads, including the presence of vehicles and pedestrians. Surveillance cameras strategically placed along streets have been instrumental in monitoring road situations and providing valuable information on pedestrians, moving vehicles, and objects within road environments. However, these video data and information are stored in large volumes, making analysis tedious and time-consuming. Deep learning models are increasingly utilized to monitor vehicles and identify and evaluate road and driving comfort situations. However, the current neural network model requires the recognition of situations using time-series video data. In this paper, we introduced a multi-directional detection model for road situations to uphold high accuracy. Deep learning methods often integrate long short-term memory (LSTM) into long-term recurrent network architectures. This approach effectively combines recurrent neural networks to capture temporal dependencies and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to extract features from extensive video data. In our proposed method, we form a multi-directional long-term recurrent convolutional network approach with two groups equipped with CNN and two layers of LSTM. Additionally, we compare road situation recognition using convolutional neural networks, long short-term networks, and long-term recurrent convolutional networks. The paper presents a method for detecting and recognizing multi-directional road contexts using a modified LRCN. After balancing the dataset through data augmentation, the number of video files increased, resulting in our model achieving 91% accuracy, a significant improvement from the original dataset. Climbing gyms aim to continuously improve their offerings and make the best use of their infrastructure to provide a unique experience for their clients, the climbers. One approach to achieve this goal is to track and analyze climbing sessions from the beginning of the ascent until the climber's descent. Detecting the climber's descent is crucial because it indicates when the ascent has ended. This paper discusses an approach that preserves climber privacy (e.g., not using cameras) while considering the convenience of climbers and the costs to the gyms. To this aim, a hardware prototype has been developed to collect data using accelerometer sensors attached to a piece of climbing equipment mounted on the wall, called a quickdraw, which connects the climbing rope to the bolt anchors. The sensors are configured to be energy-efficient, making them practical in terms of expenses and time required for replacement when used in large quantities in a climbing gym. This paper describes the hardware specifications, studies data measured by the sensors in ultra-low power mode, detects sensors' orientation patterns during descent on different routes, and develops a supervised approach to identify lowering. In recent years, the incidence of cardiac arrhythmias has been on the rise because of changes in lifestyle and the aging population. Electrocardiograms (ECGs) are widely used for the automated diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmias. However, existing models possess poor noise robustness and complex structures, limiting their effectiveness. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an arrhythmia recognition system with excellent anti-noise performance: a convolutionally optimized broad learning system (COBLS). In the proposed COBLS method, the signal is convolved with blind source separation using a signal analysis method based on high-order-statistic independent component analysis (ICA). The constructed feature matrix is further feature-extracted and dimensionally reduced using principal component analysis (PCA), which reveals the essence of the signal. The linear feature correlation between the data can be effectively reduced, and redundant attributes can be eliminated to obtain a low-dimensional feature matrix that retains the essential features of the classification model. Then, arrhythmia recognition is realized by combining this matrix with the broad learning system (BLS). Subsequently, the model was evaluated using the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and the MIT-BIH noise stress test database. The outcomes of the experiments demonstrate exceptional performance, with impressive achievements in terms of the overall accuracy, overall precision, overall sensitivity, and overall F1-score. Specifically, the results indicate outstanding performance, with figures reaching 99.11% for the overall accuracy, 96.95% for the overall precision, 89.71% for the overall sensitivity, and 93.01% for the overall F1-score across all four classification experiments. LoRa enables long-range communication for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, especially those with limited resources and low power requirements. Consequently, LoRa has emerged as a popular choice for numerous IoT applications. However, the security of LoRa devices is one of the major concerns that requires attention. Existing device identification mechanisms use cryptography which has two major issues: (1) cryptography is hard on the device resources and (2) physical attacks might prevent them from being effective. Deep learning-based radio frequency fingerprinting identification (RFFI) is emerging as a key candidate for device identification using hardware-intrinsic features. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the state of the art in the area of deep learning-based radio frequency fingerprinting identification for LoRa devices. We discuss various categories of radio frequency fingerprinting techniques along with hardware imperfections that can be exploited to identify an emitter. Furthermore, we describe different deep learning algorithms implemented for the task of LoRa device classification and summarize the main approaches and results. We discuss several representations of the LoRa signal used as input to deep learning models. Additionally, we provide a thorough review of all the LoRa RF signal datasets used in the literature and summarize details about the hardware used, the type of signals collected, the features provided, availability, and size. Finally, we conclude this paper by discussing the existing challenges in deep learning-based LoRa device identification and also envisage future research directions and opportunities. The paper "Using Absorption Models for Insulin and Carbohydrates and Deep Leaning to Improve Glucose Level Predictions" (Sensors 2021, 21, 5273) proposes a novel approach to predicting blood glucose levels for people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). By building exponential models from raw carbohydrate and insulin data to simulate the absorption in the body, the authors reported a reduction in their model's root-mean-square error (RMSE) from 15.5 mg/dL (raw) to 9.2 mg/dL (exponential) when predicting blood glucose levels one hour into the future. In this comment, we demonstrate that the experimental techniques used in that paper are flawed, which invalidates its results and conclusions. Specifically, after reviewing the authors' code, we found that the model validation scheme was malformed, namely, the training and test data from the same time intervals were mixed. This means that the reported RMSE numbers in the referenced paper did not accurately measure the predictive capabilities of the approaches that were presented. We repaired the measurement technique by appropriately isolating the training and test data, and we discovered that their models actually performed dramatically worse than was reported in the paper. Brain stroke, or a cerebrovascular accident, is a devastating medical condition that disrupts the blood supply to the brain, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. Each year, according to the World Health Organization, 15 million people worldwide experience a stroke. This results in approximately 5 million deaths and another 5 million individuals suffering permanent disabilities. The complex interplay of various risk factors highlights the urgent need for sophisticated analytical methods to more accurately predict stroke risks and manage their outcomes. Machine learning and deep learning technologies offer promising solutions by analyzing extensive datasets including patient demographics, health records, and lifestyle choices to uncover patterns and predictors not easily discernible by humans. These technologies enable advanced data processing, analysis, and fusion techniques for a comprehensive health assessment. We conducted a comprehensive review of 25 review papers published between 2020 and 2024 on machine learning and deep learning applications in brain stroke diagnosis, focusing on classification, segmentation, and object detection. Furthermore, all these reviews explore the performance evaluation and validation of advanced sensor systems in these areas, enhancing predictive health monitoring and personalized care recommendations. Moreover, we also provide a collection of the most relevant datasets used in brain stroke analysis. The selection of the papers was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Furthermore, this review critically examines each domain, identifies current challenges, and proposes future research directions, emphasizing the potential of AI methods in transforming health monitoring and patient care. As 5G technology becomes more widespread, the significant improvement in network speed and connection density has introduced more challenges to network security. In particular, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks have become more frequent and complex in software-defined network (SDN) environments. The complexity and diversity of 5G networks result in a great deal of unnecessary features, which may introduce noise into the detection process of an intrusion detection system (IDS) and reduce the generalization ability of the model. This paper aims to improve the performance of the IDS in 5G networks, especially in terms of detection speed and accuracy. It proposes an innovative feature selection (FS) method to filter out the most representative and distinguishing features from network traffic data to improve the robustness and detection efficiency of the IDS. To confirm the suggested method's efficacy, this paper uses four common machine learning (ML) models to evaluate the InSDN, CICIDS2017, and CICIDS2018 datasets and conducts real-time DDoS attack detection on the simulation platform. According to experimental results, the suggested FS technique may match 5G network requirements for high speed and high reliability of the IDS while also drastically cutting down on detection time and preserving or improving DDoS detection accuracy. This paper proposes a solution to the problem of mobile robot navigation and trajectory interpolation in dynamic environments with large scenes. The solution combines a semantic laser SLAM system that utilizes deep learning and a trajectory interpolation algorithm. The paper first introduces some open-source laser SLAM algorithms and then elaborates in detail on the general framework of the SLAM system used in this paper. Second, the concept of voxels is introduced into the occupation probability map to enhance the ability of local voxel maps to represent dynamic objects. Then, in this paper, we propose a PointNet++ point cloud semantic segmentation network combined with deep learning algorithms to extract deep features of dynamic point clouds in large scenes and output semantic information of points on static objects. A descriptor of the global environment is generated based on its semantic information. Closed-loop completion of global map optimization is performed to reduce cumulative error. Finally, T-trajectory interpolation is utilized to ensure the motion performance of the robot and improve the smooth stability of the robot trajectory. The experimental results indicate that the combination of the semantic laser SLAM system with deep learning and the trajectory interpolation algorithm proposed in this paper yields better graph-building and loop-closure effects in large scenes at SIASUN large scene campus. In the face of increasing climate variability and the complexities of modern power grids, managing power outages in electric utilities has emerged as a critical challenge. This paper introduces a novel predictive model employing machine learning algorithms, including decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). Leveraging historical sensors-based and non-sensors-based outage data from a Turkish electric utility company, the model demonstrates adaptability to diverse grid structures, considers meteorological and non-meteorological outage causes, and provides real-time feedback to customers to effectively address the problem of power outage duration. Using the XGBoost algorithm with the minimum redundancy maximum relevance (MRMR) feature selection attained 98.433% accuracy in predicting outage durations, better than the state-of-the-art methods showing 85.511% accuracy on average over various datasets, a 12.922% improvement. This paper presents an innovative technique, Advanced Predictor of Electrical Parameters, based on machine learning methods to predict the degradation of electronic components under the effects of radiation. The term degradation refers to the way in which electrical parameters of the electronic components vary with the irradiation dose. This method consists of two sequential steps defined as 'recognition of degradation patterns in the database' and 'degradation prediction of new samples without any kind of irradiation'. The technique can be used under two different approaches called 'pure data driven' and 'model based'. This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of using a new wireless electroencephalography (EEG)–electromyography (EMG) wearable approach to generate characteristic EEG-EMG mixed patterns with mouth movements in order to detect distinct movement patterns for severe speech impairments. This paper describes a method for detecting mouth movement based on a new signal processing technology suitable for sensor integration and machine learning applications. This paper examines the relationship between the mouth motion and the brainwave in an effort to develop nonverbal interfacing for people who have lost the ability to communicate, such as people with paralysis. A set of experiments were conducted to assess the efficacy of the proposed method for feature selection. It was determined that the classification of mouth movements was meaningful. EEG-EMG signals were also collected during silent mouthing of phonemes. A few-shot neural network was trained to classify the phonemes from the EEG-EMG signals, yielding classification accuracy of 95%. This review paper offers readers thorough information on the latest machine learning methods utilized in this industry's predictive analytical modeling. This review covers different forms of machine learning techniques used in predictive analytical modeling from 2021 to 2023 (91 articles). It provides an overview of the details of the papers that were reviewed, describing the model's categories, the data's temporality, field, and name, the dataset's type, predictive analytics (classification, clustering, or prediction), the models' input and output parameters, the performance metrics, the optimal model, and the model's benefits and drawbacks. In addition, suggestions for future research directions to provide insights into the potential applications of the associated knowledge. With the continuous development of automotive intelligence, vehicle occupant detection technology has received increasing attention. Despite various types of research in this field, a simple, reliable, and highly private detection method is lacking. This paper proposes a method for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. Specifically, the paper outlines the system design for vehicle occupant detection using millimeter-wave radar. By collecting the raw signals of FMCW radar and applying Range-FFT and DoA estimation algorithms, a range–azimuth heatmap was generated, visually depicting the current status of people inside the vehicle. Furthermore, utilizing the collected range–azimuth heatmap of passengers, this paper integrates the Faster R-CNN deep learning networks with radar signal processing to identify passenger information. Finally, to test the performance of the detection method proposed in this article, an experimental verification was conducted in a car and the results were compared with those of traditional machine learning algorithms. In today's world, a significant amount of global energy is used in buildings. Unfortunately, a lot of this energy is wasted, because electrical appliances are not used properly or efficiently. One way to reduce this waste is by detecting, learning, and predicting when people are present in buildings. To do this, buildings need to become "smart" and "cognitive" and use modern technologies to sense when and how people are occupying the buildings. By leveraging this information, buildings can make smart decisions based on recently developed methods. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies that have been designed and used for the monitoring of indoor environmental conditions within buildings. Using these technologies is crucial to gathering data about the indoor environment and determining the number and presence of occupants. Furthermore, this paper critically examines both the strengths and limitations of each technology in predicting occupant behavior. In addition, it explores different methods for processing these data and making future occupancy predictions. Moreover, we highlight some challenges, such as determining the optimal number and location of sensors and radars, and provide a detailed explanation and insights into these challenges. Furthermore, the paper explores possible future directions, including the security of occupants' data and the promotion of energy-efficient practices such as localizing occupants and monitoring their activities within a building. Water constitutes an indispensable resource crucial for the sustenance of humanity, as it plays an integral role in various sectors such as agriculture, industrial processes, and domestic consumption. Even though water covers 71% of the global land surface, governments have been grappling with the challenge of ensuring the provision of safe water for domestic use. A contributing factor to this situation is the persistent contamination of available water sources rendering them unfit for human consumption. A common contaminant, pesticides are not frequently tested for despite their serious effects on biodiversity. Pesticide determination in water quality assessment is a challenging task because the procedures involved in the extraction and detection are complex. This reduces their popularity in many monitoring campaigns despite their harmful effects. If the existing methods of pesticide analysis are adapted by leveraging new technologies, then information concerning their presence in water ecosystems can be exposed. Furthermore, beyond the advantages conferred by the integration of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), the Internet of Things (IoT), Machine Learning (ML), and big data analytics, a notable outcome is the attainment of a heightened degree of granularity in the information of water ecosystems. This paper discusses methods of pesticide detection in water, emphasizing the possible use of electrochemical sensors, biosensors, and paper-based sensors in wireless sensing. It also explores the application of WSNs in water, the IoT, computing models, ML, and big data analytics, and their potential for integration as technologies useful for pesticide monitoring in water. This paper investigates a method for precise mapping of human arm movements using sEMG signals. A multi-channel approach captures the sEMG signals, which, combined with the accurately calculated joint angles from an Inertial Measurement Unit, allows for action recognition and mapping through deep learning algorithms. Firstly, signal acquisition and processing were carried out, which involved acquiring data from various movements (hand gestures, single-degree-of-freedom joint movements, and continuous joint actions) and sensor placement. Then, interference signals were filtered out through filters, and the signals were preprocessed using normalization and moving averages to obtain sEMG signals with obvious features. Additionally, this paper constructs a hybrid network model, combining Convolutional Neural Networks and Artificial Neural Networks, and employs a multi-feature fusion algorithm to enhance the accuracy of gesture recognition. Furthermore, a nonlinear fitting between sEMG signals and joint angles was established based on a backpropagation neural network, incorporating momentum term and adaptive learning rate adjustments. Finally, based on the gesture recognition and joint angle prediction model, prosthetic arm control experiments were conducted, achieving highly accurate arm movement prediction and execution. This paper presents a visual compass method utilizing global features, specifically spherical moments. One of the primary challenges faced by photometric methods employing global features is the variation in the image caused by the appearance and disappearance of regions within the camera's field of view as it moves. Additionally, modeling the impact of translational motion on the values of global features poses a significant challenge, as it is dependent on scene depths, particularly for non-planar scenes. To address these issues, this paper combines the utilization of image masks to mitigate abrupt changes in global feature values and the application of neural networks to tackle the modeling challenge posed by translational motion. By employing masks at various locations within the image, multiple estimations of rotation corresponding to the motion of each selected region can be obtained. Our contribution lies in offering a rapid method for implementing numerous masks on the image with real-time inference speed, rendering it suitable for embedded robot applications. Smart buildings use advanced technologies to automate building functions. One important function is occupancy detection using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for smart buildings. Occupancy information is useful information to reduce energy consumption by automating building functions such as lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The information is useful to improve indoor air quality by ensuring that ventilation systems are used only when and where they are needed. Additionally, it is useful to enhance building security by detecting unusual or unexpected occupancy levels and triggering appropriate responses, such as alarms or alerts. Occupancy information is useful for many other applications, such as emergency response, plug load energy management, point-of-interest identification, etc. However, the accuracy of occupancy detection is limited by factors such as real-time occupancy data, sensor placement, privacy concerns, and the presence of pets or objects that can interfere with sensor reading. With the rapid development of IoT sensor technologies and the increasing need for smart building solutions, there is a growing interest in occupancy detection techniques. The cooperative, connected, and automated mobility (CCAM) infrastructure plays a key role in understanding and enhancing the environmental perception of autonomous vehicles (AVs) driving in complex urban settings. However, the deployment of CCAM infrastructure necessitates the efficient selection of the computational processing layer and deployment of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models to achieve greater performance of AVs in complex urban environments. In this paper, we propose a computational framework and analyze the effectiveness of a custom-trained DL model (YOLOv8) when deployed in diverse devices and settings at the vehicle-edge-cloud-layered architecture. Our main focus is to understand the interplay and relationship between the DL model's accuracy and execution time during deployment at the layered framework. Therefore, we investigate the trade-offs between accuracy and time by the deployment process of the YOLOv8 model over each layer of the computational framework. We consider the CCAM infrastructures, i.e., sensory devices, computation, and communication at each layer. The findings reveal that the performance metrics results (e.g., 0.842 mAP@0.5) of deployed DL models remain consistent regardless of the device type across any layer of the framework. However, we observe that inference times for object detection tasks tend to decrease when the DL model is subjected to different environmental conditions. For instance, the Jetson AGX (non-GPU) outperforms the Raspberry Pi (non-GPU) by reducing inference time by 72%, whereas the Jetson AGX Xavier (GPU) outperforms the Jetson AGX ARMv8 (non-GPU) by reducing inference time by 90%. The problem of Power Quality analysis is becoming crucial to ensuring the proper functioning of complex systems and big plants. In this regard, it is essential to rapidly detect anomalies in voltage and current signals to ensure a prompt response and maximize the system's availability with the minimum maintenance cost. In this paper, anomaly detection algorithms based on machine learning, such as One Class Support Vector Machine (OCSVM), Isolation Forest (IF), and Angle-Based Outlier Detection (ABOD), are used as a first tool for rapid and effective clustering of the measured voltage and current signals directly on-line on the sensing unit. If the proposed anomaly detection algorithm detects an anomaly, further investigations using suitable classification algorithms are required. The main advantage of the proposed solution is the ability to rapidly and efficiently detect different types of anomalies with low computational complexity, allowing the implementation of the algorithm directly on the sensor node used for signal acquisition. A suitable experimental platform has been established to evaluate the advantages of the proposed method. All the different models were tested using a consistent set of hyperparameters and an output dataset generated from the principal component analysis technique. The authentication of wireless devices through physical layer attributes has attracted a fair amount of attention recently. Recent work in this area has examined various features extracted from the wireless signal to either identify a uniqueness in the channel between the transmitter–receiver pair or more robustly identify certain transmitter behaviors unique to certain devices originating from imperfect hardware manufacturing processes. In particular, the carrier frequency offset (CFO), induced due to the local oscillator mismatch between the transmitter and receiver pair, has exhibited good detection capabilities in stationary and low-mobility transmission scenarios. It is still unclear, however, how the CFO detection capability would hold up in more dynamic time-varying channels where there is a higher mobility. This paper experimentally demonstrates the identification accuracy of CFO for wireless devices in time-varying channels. To this end, a software-defined radio (SDR) testbed is deployed to collect CFO values in real environments, where real transmission and reception are conducted in a vehicular setup. The collected CFO values are used to train machine-learning (ML) classifiers to be used for device identification. While CFO exhibits good detection performance (97% accuracy) for low-mobility scenarios, it is found that higher mobility (35 miles/h) degrades (72% accuracy) the effectiveness of CFO in distinguishing between legitimate and non-legitimate transmitters. Potholes and other road surface damages pose significant risks to vehicles and traffic safety. The current methods of in situ visual inspection for potholes or cracks are inefficient, costly, and hazardous. Therefore, there is a pressing need to develop automated systems for assessing road surface conditions, aiming to efficiently and accurately reconstruct, recognize, and locate potholes. In recent years, various methods utilizing (a) computer vision, (b) three-dimensional (3D) point clouds, or (c) smartphone data have been employed to map road surface quality conditions. Machine learning and deep learning techniques have increasingly enhanced the performance of these methods. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge computer vision and machine learning algorithms for pothole detection. It covers topics such as sensing systems for acquiring two-dimensional (2D) and 3D road data, classical algorithms based on 2D image processing, segmentation-based algorithms using 3D point cloud modeling, machine learning, deep learning algorithms, and hybrid approaches. The review highlights that hybrid methods combining traditional image processing and advanced machine learning techniques offer the highest accuracy in pothole detection. Machine learning approaches, particularly deep learning, demonstrate superior adaptability and detection rates, while traditional 2D and 3D methods provide valuable baseline techniques. The significance of model updating methods is becoming increasingly evident as the demand for greater precision in numerical models rises. In recent years, with the advancement of deep learning technology, model updating methods based on various deep learning algorithms have begun to emerge. These methods tend to be complicated in terms of methodological architectures and mathematical processes. This paper introduces an innovative model updating approach using a deep learning model: the deep neural network (DNN). This approach diverges from conventional methods by streamlining the process, directly utilizing the results of modal analysis and numerical model simulations as deep learning input, bypassing any additional complex mathematical calculations. Moreover, with a minimalist neural network architecture, a model updating method has been developed that achieves both accuracy and efficiency. This distinctive application of DNN has seldom been applied previously to model updating. Furthermore, this research investigates the impact of prefabricated partition walls on the overall stiffness of buildings, a field that has received limited attention in the previous studies. The main finding was that the deep neural network method achieved a Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) value exceeding 0.99 for model updating in the minimally disturbed 1st and 2nd order modes when compared to actual measurements. Additionally, it was discovered that prefabricated partitions exhibited a stiffness ratio of about 0.2–0.3 compared to shear walls of the same material and thickness, emphasizing their role in structural behavior. This paper presents a new edge detection process implemented in an embedded IoT device called Bee Smart Detection node to detect catastrophic apiary events. Such events include swarming, queen loss, and the detection of Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) conditions. Two deep learning sub-processes are used for this purpose. The first uses a fuzzy multi-layered neural network of variable depths called fuzzy-stranded-NN to detect CCD conditions based on temperature and humidity measurements inside the beehive. The second utilizes a deep learning CNN model to detect swarming and queen loss cases based on sound recordings. The proposed processes have been implemented into autonomous Bee Smart Detection IoT devices that transmit their measurements and the detection results to the cloud over Wi-Fi. The BeeSD devices have been tested for easy-to-use functionality, autonomous operation, deep learning model inference accuracy, and inference execution speeds. The author presents the experimental results of the fuzzy-stranded-NN model for detecting critical conditions and deep learning CNN models for detecting swarming and queen loss. From the presented experimental results, the stranded-NN achieved accuracy results up to 95%, while the ResNet-50 model presented accuracy results up to 99% for detecting swarming or queen loss events. The ResNet-18 model is also the fastest inference speed replacement of the ResNet-50 model, achieving up to 93% accuracy results. The success of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) analysis hinges on the precision and robustness of the calibration model. Shallow learning (SL) algorithms like partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) often fall short in capturing the interrelationships between adjacent spectral variables, and the analysis results are easily affected by spectral noise, which dramatically limits the breadth and depth of applications of NIRS. Deep learning (DL) methods, with their capacity to discern intricate features from limited samples, have been progressively integrated into NIRS. In this paper, two discriminant analysis problems, including wheat kernels and Yali pears as examples, and several representative calibration models were used to research the robustness and effectiveness of the model. Additionally, this article proposed a near-infrared calibration model, which was based on the Gramian angular difference field method and coordinate attention convolutional neural networks (G-CACNNs). The research results show that, compared with SL, spectral preprocessing has a smaller impact on the analysis accuracy of consensus learning (CL) and DL, and the latter has the highest analysis accuracy in the modeling results using the original spectrum. The accuracy of G-CACNNs in two discrimination tasks was 98.48% and 99.39%. When autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) perform underwater tasks, the absence of GPS position assistance can lead to a decrease in the accuracy of traditional navigation systems, such as the extended Kalman filter (EKF), due to the accumulation of errors. To enhance the navigation accuracy of AUVs in the absence of position assistance, this paper proposes an innovative navigation method that integrates a position correction model and a velocity model. Specifically, a velocity model is developed using a dynamic model and the Optimal Pruning Extreme Learning Machine (OP-ELM) method. This velocity model is trained online to provide velocity outputs during the intervals when the Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) is not updating, ensuring more consistent and reliable velocity estimation. Additionally, a position correction model (PCM) is constructed, based on a hybrid gated recurrent neural network (HGRNN). This model is specifically designed to correct the AUV's navigation position when GPS data are unavailable underwater. The HGRNN utilizes historical navigation data and patterns learned during training to predict and adjust the AUV's estimated position, thereby reducing the drift caused by the lack of real-time position updates. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed VM-PCM-EKF algorithm can significantly improve the positioning accuracy of the navigation system, with a maximum accuracy improvement of 87.2% compared to conventional EKF algorithms. Slip, trip, and fall (STF) accidents cause high rates of absence from work in many companies. During the 2022 reporting period, the German Social Accident Insurance recorded 165,420 STF accidents, of which 12 were fatal and 2485 led to disability pensions. Particularly in the traffic, transport and logistics sector, STF accidents are the most frequently reported occupational accidents. Therefore, an accurate detection of near-falls is critical to improve worker safety. Efficient detection algorithms are essential for this, but their performance heavily depends on large, well-curated datasets. However, there are drawbacks to current datasets, including small sample sizes, an emphasis on older demographics, and a reliance on simulated rather than real data. In this paper we report the collection of a standardised kinematic STF dataset from real-world STF events affecting parcel delivery workers and steelworkers. We further discuss the use of the data to evaluate dynamic stability control during locomotion for machine learning and build a standardised database. We present the data collection, discuss the classification of the data, present the totality of the data statistically, and compare it with existing databases. A significant research gap is the limited number of participants and focus on older populations in previous studies, as well as the reliance on simulated rather than real-world data. Our study addresses these gaps by providing a larger dataset of real-world STF events from a working population with physically demanding jobs. The population studied included 110 participants, consisting of 55 parcel delivery drivers and 55 steelworkers, both male and female, aged between 19 and 63 years. Sign language is undoubtedly a common way of communication among deaf and non-verbal people. But it is not common among hearing people to use sign language to express feelings or share information in everyday life. Therefore, a significant communication gap exists between deaf and hearing individuals, despite both groups experiencing similar emotions and sentiments. In this paper, we developed a convolutional neural network–squeeze excitation network to predict the sign language signs and developed a smartphone application to provide access to the ML model to use it. The SE block provides attention to the channel of the image, thus improving the performance of the model. On the other hand, the smartphone application brings the ML model close to people so that everyone can benefit from it. In addition, we used the Shapley additive explanation to interpret the black box nature of the ML model and understand the models working from within. Using our ML model, we achieved an accuracy of 99.86% on the KU-BdSL dataset. The assessment of the cognitive workload experienced by air traffic controllers is a complex and prominent issue in the research community. This study introduces new indicators related to gamma waves to detect controllers' workload and develops experimental protocols to capture their EEG data and NASA-TXL data. Then, statistical tests, including the Shapiro–Wilk test and ANOVA, were used to verify whether there was a significant difference between the workload data of the controllers in different scenarios. Furthermore, the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier was employed to assess the detection accuracy of these indicators across four categorizations. According to the outcomes, hypotheses suggesting a strong correlation between gamma waves and an air traffic controller's workload were put forward and subsequently verified; meanwhile, compared with traditional indicators, the indicators associated with gamma waves proposed in this paper have higher accuracy. In addition, to explore the applicability of the indicator, sensitive channels were selected based on the mRMR algorithm for the indicator with the highest accuracy, β + θ + α + γ, showcasing a recognition rate of a single channel exceeding 95% of the full channel, which meets the requirements of convenience and accuracy in practical applications. In the era of ubiquitous computing, the challenges imposed by the increasing demand for real-time data processing, security, and energy efficiency call for innovative solutions. The emergence of fog computing has provided a promising paradigm to address these challenges by bringing computational resources closer to data sources. Despite its advantages, the fog computing characteristics pose challenges in heterogeneous environments in terms of resource allocation and management, provisioning, security, and connectivity, among others. This paper introduces COGNIFOG, a novel cognitive fog framework currently under development, which was designed to leverage intelligent, decentralized decision-making processes, machine learning algorithms, and distributed computing principles to enable the autonomous operation, adaptability, and scalability across the IoT–edge–cloud continuum. By integrating cognitive capabilities, COGNIFOG is expected to increase the efficiency and reliability of next-generation computing environments, potentially providing a seamless bridge between the physical and digital worlds. Federated learning (FL) has emerged as a pivotal paradigm for training machine learning models across decentralized devices while maintaining data privacy. In the healthcare domain, FL enables collaborative training among diverse medical devices and institutions, enhancing model robustness and generalizability without compromising patient privacy. In this paper, we propose DPS-GAT, a novel approach integrating graph attention networks (GATs) with differentially private client selection and resource allocation strategies in FL. Our methodology addresses the challenges of data heterogeneity and limited communication resources inherent in medical applications. By employing graph neural networks (GNNs), we effectively capture the relational structures among clients, optimizing the selection process and ensuring efficient resource distribution. Differential privacy mechanisms are incorporated, to safeguard sensitive information throughout the training process. Our extensive experiments, based on the Regensburg pediatric appendicitis open dataset, demonstrated the superiority of our approach, in terms of model accuracy, privacy preservation, and resource efficiency, compared to traditional FL methods. The ability of DPS-GAT to maintain a high and stable number of client selections across various rounds and differential privacy budgets has significant practical implications, indicating that FL systems can achieve strong privacy guarantees without compromising client engagement and model performance. Door access control systems are important to protect the security and integrity of physical spaces. Accuracy and speed are important factors that govern their performance. In this paper, we investigate a novel approach to identify users by measuring patterns of their interactions with a doorknob via an embedded accelerometer and gyroscope and by applying deep-learning-based algorithms to these measurements. Our identification results obtained from 47 users show an accuracy of 90.2%. When the sex of the user is used as an input feature, the accuracy is 89.8% in the case of male individuals and 97.0% in the case of female individuals. We study how the accuracy is affected by the sample duration, finding that is its possible to identify users using a sample of 0.5 s with an accuracy of 68.5%. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of using patterns of motor activity to provide access control, thus extending with it the set of alternatives to be considered for behavioral biometrics. High-strength bolts play a crucial role in ultra-high-pressure equipment such as bridges and railway tracks. Effective monitoring of bolt conditions is of paramount importance for common fault repair and accident prevention. This paper aims to detect and classify bolt corrosion levels accurately. We design and implement a bolt corrosion classification system based on a Wireless Acoustic Emission Sensor Network (WASN). Initially, WASN nodes collect high-speed acoustic emission (AE) signals from bolts. Then, the ReliefF feature selection algorithm is applied to identify the optimal feature combination. Subsequently, the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) model is utilized for bolt corrosion classification. Additionally, to achieve high prediction accuracy, an improved goose algorithm (GOOSE) is employed to ensure the most suitable parameter combination for the ELM model. Experimental measurements were conducted on five classes of bolt corrosion levels: 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The classification accuracy obtained using the proposed method was at least 98.04%. Compared to state-of-the-art classification diagnostic models, our approach exhibits superior AE signal recognition performance and stronger generalization ability to adapt to variations in working conditions. The transient stability assessment based on machine learning faces challenges such as sample data imbalance and poor generalization. To address these problems, this paper proposes an intelligent enhancement method for real-time adaptive assessment of transient stability. In the offline phase, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is used as the base classifier. A model training method based on contrastive learning is introduced, aiming to increase the spatial distance between positive and negative samples in the mapping space. This approach effectively improves the accuracy of the model in recognizing unbalanced samples. In the online phase, when real data with different distribution characteristics from the offline data are encountered, an active transfer strategy is employed to update the model. New system samples are obtained through instance transfer from the original system, and an active sampling strategy considering uncertainty is designed to continuously select high-value samples from the new system for labeling. The model parameters are then updated by fine-tuning. This approach drastically reduces the cost of updating while improving the model's adaptability. The number of connected devices or Internet of Things (IoT) devices has rapidly increased. According to the latest available statistics, in 2023, there were approximately 17.2 billion connected IoT devices; this is expected to reach 25.4 billion IoT devices by 2030 and grow year over year for the foreseeable future. IoT devices share, collect, and exchange data via the internet, wireless networks, or other networks with one another. IoT interconnection technology improves and facilitates people's lives but, at the same time, poses a real threat to their security. Denial-of-Service (DoS) and Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks are considered the most common and threatening attacks that strike IoT devices' security. These are considered to be an increasing trend, and it will be a major challenge to reduce risk, especially in the future. In this context, this paper presents an improved framework (SDN-ML-IoT) that works as an Intrusion and Prevention Detection System (IDPS) that could help to detect DDoS attacks with more efficiency and mitigate them in real time. This SDN-ML-IoT uses a Machine Learning (ML) method in a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) environment in order to protect smart home IoT devices from DDoS attacks. We employed an ML method based on Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression (LR), k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), and Naive Bayes (NB) with a One-versus-Rest (OvR) strategy and then compared our work to other related works. Based on the performance metrics, such as confusion matrix, training time, prediction time, accuracy, and Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUC-ROC), it was established that SDN-ML-IoT, when applied to RF, outperforms other ML algorithms, as well as similar approaches related to our work. It had an impressive accuracy of 99.99%, and it could mitigate DDoS attacks in less than 3 s. We conducted a comparative analysis of various models and algorithms used in the related works. The results indicated that our proposed approach outperforms others, showcasing its effectiveness in both detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks within SDNs. Based on these promising results, we have opted to deploy SDN-ML-IoT within the SDN. Federated Learning (FL) is a decentralized machine learning method in which individual devices compute local models based on their data. In FL, devices periodically share newly trained updates with the central server, rather than submitting their raw data. The key characteristics of FL, including on-device training and aggregation, make it interesting for many communication domains. Moreover, the potential of new systems facilitating FL in sixth generation (6G) enabled Passive Optical Networks (PON), presents a promising opportunity for integration within this domain. This article focuses on the interaction between FL and PON, exploring approaches for effective bandwidth management, particularly in addressing the complexity introduced by FL traffic. In the PON standard, advanced bandwidth management is proposed by allocating multiple upstream grants utilizing the Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (DBA) algorithm to be allocated for an Optical Network Unit (ONU). However, there is a lack of research on studying the utilization of multiple grant allocation. In this paper, we address this limitation by introducing a novel DBA approach that efficiently allocates PON bandwidth for FL traffic generation and demonstrates how multiple grants can benefit from the enhanced capacity of implementing PON in carrying out FL flows. Simulations conducted in this study show that the proposed solution outperforms state-of-the-art solutions in several network performance metrics, particularly in reducing upstream delay. This improvement holds great promise for enabling real-time data-intensive services that will be key components of 6G environments. Federated learning is an effective approach for preserving data privacy and security, enabling machine learning to occur in a distributed environment and promoting its development. However, an urgent problem that needs to be addressed is how to encourage active client participation in federated learning. The Shapley value, a classical concept in cooperative game theory, has been utilized for data valuation in machine learning services. Nevertheless, existing numerical evaluation schemes based on the Shapley value are impractical, as they necessitate additional model training, leading to increased communication overhead. Moreover, participants' data may exhibit Non-IID characteristics, posing a significant challenge to evaluating participant contributions. Non-IID data have greatly affected the accuracy of the global model, weakened the marginal effect of the participants, and led to the underestimated contribution measurement results of the participants. Current work often overlooks the impact of heterogeneity on model aggregation. This paper presents a fair federated learning contribution measurement scheme that addresses the need for additional model computations. By introducing a novel aggregation weight, it enhances the accuracy of the contribution measurement. Experiments on the MNIST and Fashion MNIST dataset show that the proposed method can accurately compute the contributions of participants. Functional mobility tests, such as the L test of functional mobility, are recommended to provide clinicians with information regarding the mobility progress of lower-limb amputees. Smartphone inertial sensors have been used to perform subtask segmentation on functional mobility tests, providing further clinically useful measures such as fall risk. However, L test subtask segmentation rule-based algorithms developed for able-bodied individuals have not produced sufficiently acceptable results when tested with lower-limb amputee data. In this paper, a random forest machine learning model was trained to segment subtasks of the L test for application to lower-limb amputees. The model was trained with 105 trials completed by able-bodied participants and 25 trials completed by lower-limb amputee participants and tested using a leave-one-out method with lower-limb amputees. This algorithm successfully classified subtasks within a one-foot strike for most lower-limb amputee participants. Human action recognition (HAR) technology based on radar signals has garnered significant attention from both industry and academia due to its exceptional privacy-preserving capabilities, noncontact sensing characteristics, and insensitivity to lighting conditions. However, the scarcity of accurately labeled human radar data poses a significant challenge in meeting the demand for large-scale training datasets required by deep model-based HAR technology, thus substantially impeding technological advancements in this field. To address this issue, a semi-supervised learning algorithm, MF-Match, is proposed in this paper. This algorithm computes pseudo-labels for larger-scale unsupervised radar data, enabling the model to extract embedded human behavioral information and enhance the accuracy of HAR algorithms. Furthermore, the method incorporates contrastive learning principles to improve the quality of model-generated pseudo-labels and mitigate the impact of mislabeled pseudo-labels on recognition performance. Experimental results demonstrate that this method achieves action recognition accuracies of 86.69% and 91.48% on two widely used radar spectrum datasets, respectively, utilizing only 10% labeled data, thereby validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Efficient and reliable data routing is critical in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) within Smart Grids, dictating the overall network performance and resilience. This paper introduces Q-RPL, a novel Q-learning-based Routing Protocol designed to enhance routing decisions in AMI deployments based on wireless mesh technologies. Q-RPL leverages the principles of Reinforcement Learning (RL) to dynamically select optimal next-hop forwarding candidates, adapting to changing network conditions. The protocol operates on top of the standard IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), integrating it with intelligent decision-making capabilities. Through extensive simulations carried out in real map scenarios, Q-RPL demonstrates a significant improvement in key performance metrics such as packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, and compliant factor compared to the standard RPL implementation and other benchmark algorithms found in the literature. The adaptability and robustness of Q-RPL mark a significant advancement in the evolution of routing protocols for Smart Grid AMI, promising enhanced efficiency and reliability for future intelligent energy systems.
