Nurses' turnover intention has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic. Emotional labor is reportedly high among nurses in Korea, and a positive psychological capital can help reduce turnover intention. This cross-sectional study investigated the factors influencing turnover intention in nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Survey data were collected from 155 nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 at a university hospital in South Korea in March 2022. Self-reported and paper-based questionnaires on emotional labor, positive psychological capital, and turnover intention were employed. The mean values for emotional labor, positive psychological capital, and turnover intention were 54.52/80, 58.03/90, and 38.92/50, respectively, and 77.8% of nurses reported planning to quit working. Turnover intention correlated with emotional labor (r = 0.17; p = 0.041) and had no significant relationship with positive psychological capital. Sex (β = 0.24; p = 0.003) and emotional labor (β = 0.18; p = 0.019) affected turnover intention, with 9% explanatory power. Female nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 had a higher turnover intention than male nurses. Finally, the higher the emotional labor of nurses caring for patients with COVID-19, the higher the turnover intention. To reduce the turnover intention of nurses, hospitals need to help them enhance their emotional labor and positive psychological capital by establishing measures such as emotional coaching programs or psychological capital interventions. Aim. The objective was to investigate the impact of structural empowerment and demographic factors on the psychological empowerment of nurses. Background. The empowerment of nurses plays a crucial role in improving patient care and achieving successful healthcare outcomes. When nurses feel empowered in their work environment, they tend to remain dedicated to their jobs and experience higher levels of job satisfaction and engagement. Methods. This cross-sectional study utilized a convenience sample of 287 nurses recruited from various hospital units, resulting in a response rate of 94.7%. Data were collected through a paper survey consisting of three sections: structural empowerment, psychological empowerment, and demographics. Results. The first hierarchical regression explains 57.0% variance in nurses' psychological empowerment (F = 78.52, p < 0.001). Age (β = 0.37, p < 0.01) and structural empowerment (β = 0.69, p < 0.001) have a positive influence on nurses' psychological empowerment. Conversely, having a bachelor's degree (β = −0.16, p < 0.01) had a negative impact psychological empowerment. The second hierarchical regression clarifies the specific aspects of structural empowerment that influences positively on nurses' psychological empowerment: access to opportunities (β = 0.13, p < 0.01), support (β = 0.13, p < 0.01), resources (β = 0.35, p < 0.001), and informal power (β = 0.12, p < 0.01). Conclusion. This study emphasizes the importance of considering demographic variables, such as age and education, in conjunction with structural empowerment to effectively enhance nurses' psychological empowerment. Implications for Nursing Management. Nursing managers should tailor their empowerment strategies based on the demographic characteristics of their nurses. It is essential to focus on providing nurses with access to opportunities, support, resources, and informal power. These insights provide valuable guidance for nursing managers to enhance nurses' psychological well-being, job satisfaction, and overall quality of life. Although individual factors play a vital role in determining professional autonomy, their specific impact during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has not been studied. This study aimed to compare nurses' professional autonomy when caring for patients with COVID-19 and for other patients and explore factors related to autonomy when caring for these patients. A paper-based questionnaire survey was conducted from June to August 2022 among nurses working at a university hospital in Japan. The survey included demographic factors (10 items, including, age, section, years of nursing experience, position, educational background, ladder level, and having certified nurse specialists or certified nurse qualifications) and individual experience factors (4 items: number of COVID-19 patients experienced, frequency and contents of searching for the latest information about COVID-19, frequency of using scientific sources, and frequency of training/study sessions on COVID-19 attended at the hospital). Additionally, basic knowledge of COVID-19 was evaluated. The scale for nurses' professional autonomy was developed based on a previous study. A paired t-test and stepwise multiple linear regression were used for the analyses. Overall, 241 nurses participated in the survey. The average length of nursing experience was 10.3 ± 9.2 years. The total scores for nurses' professional autonomy in all 5 factors 27 items were significantly lower (t = −12.1, p < 0.001) when caring for COVID-19 patients than when caring for other patients. Specifically, Factor 1 (Cognition) exhibited the most decreased scores when caring for COVID-19 patients than when caring for other patients. Factor 4 (Abstract judgment) differed the least between caring for COVID-19 and for other patients, but the average score was the lowest. More years of nursing experience (β = 0.208, p = 0.001) and a higher number of patients with COVID-19 cared for (β = 0.140, p = 0.026) were associated with higher autonomy scores. In conclusion, to enhance professional autonomy during an unprecedented pandemic, nurses must enhance cognition and abstract judgment. In the event of a future pandemic, nurses need to create an environment in which they routinely access and utilize the latest information and scientific evidence to provide high-quality nursing care based on their professional judgment and competence. Aim: The present study aimed to examine the effects of a learning programme for nurse managers on connecting learning with their own experiences and fostering competence. Background: In Japan, second‐level programmes for certified nurse administrators represent the main opportunity for formal training for nurse managers. However, it is difficult for nurse managers to transfer second‐level programme learning to their workplace. Methods: This quasi‐experimental study used a two‐group pretest–posttest design with purposive sampling and non‐random assignment of 29 consenting Japanese nurse managers who were participating in a second‐level programme through a prefectural nursing association. The programme provided reflection papers and feedback from a researcher, as well as reflective group sessions. The outcome measure was the Japanese First‐Line Nurse Managers Competence Inventory (JNMCI) score. Results: The intervention group showed significant improvement in JNMCI scores after participating in the programme. A significant difference in JNMCI scores was also observed between the intervention and comparison groups. Conclusion: This learning programme led to improved competency among nurse managers. Implications for Nursing Management: Nurse manager development programmes should include reflection papers and feedback, as well as reflective group sessions, to improve competency among nurse managers. Aim: This paper aimed to investigate the relationship between social support and quality of life for nurses in infectious disease departments in China, as well as the function of psychological resilience in mediating this relationship. Background: Nurses in infectious disease departments play a critical role in the prevention and control of infectious diseases and in public health care services in general, and their quality of life can affect the quality of clinical nursing work they do. However, there are few studies on the relationship between nurses' social support networks and their quality of life. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted using a sample of 866 clinical nurses from the infectious disease departments of 10 general hospitals in China. Data were collected using a questionnaire survey from January to May 2021. The mediating influence of psychological resilience on social support and quality of life was investigated using structural equation modelling. Results: The score of quality of life was (36.36 ± 7.64). Quality of life was positively correlated with social support and psychological resilience (r1 = 0.521, r2 = 0.583; p <.01), and psychological resilience was positively correlated with social support (r = 0.426; p <.01) as well. The mediating effect of psychological resilience between social support and quality of life was 0.233, accounting for 37% of the total effect. Conclusion: The quality of life of nurses working in infectious disease departments is in the middle level. Psychological resilience is a mediating variable between social support and quality of life. Implications for Nursing Management: Managers can improve the quality of life of nurses by both increasing social support and strengthening psychological resilience. Managers should pay attention to the degree of social support provided to nurses and take proactive measures to build psychological resilience so that nurses can effectively manage stress and negative emotions from work and life in order improve their quality of life. Objectives: This study aims to understand the current situation and multiple factors affecting the core competence specializing in the maternal, neonatal and under‐five nursing in China. Background: Highly skilled nurses and midwives are essential worldwide for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, especially in low‐ and middle‐income countries like China, due to the overwhelming COVID‐19 crisis. Method: The 890 nurses and midwives from 12 hospitals were investigated in this cross‐sectional study, with two questionnaires: the sociodemographic information and competency inventory for the registered nurses. Results: The participants reported a mean total score of 193.78 (±42.19) out of 220 and lowest in critical thinking and research ability (3.01 ± 0.82). The professional title, level, marital status, relationship quality, highest qualification, experience in specialist nurse training, participation in scientific research projects and publishing papers were the influencing factors (P <.05). Conclusions: The respondents' core competence needs improvement, especially critical regarding thinking and research ability. In addition, marriage and good or excellent relationship quality are factors that can potentially improve competence. Implications for Nursing Management: Targeted interventions for higher core nursing competence need to be implemented, especially focusing on nurses' marital status and emotional support from partners. Aim: We aim to investigate the interplay between moral distress and moral injury among nurses working in palliative and oncology wards and to assess its impact on nursing leadership. Background: The past 2 years have been particularly challenging for nurses and nursing leaders in Croatia. The coronavirus disease pandemic and the subsequent earthquakes in the country significantly impacted the work of nurses. Moral distress has been well‐known to nursing professionals, but recent studies warn about cofounding it with moral injury and their possible intercorrelation, deserving more attention from an empirical perspective. Methods: We conducted quantitative cross‐sectional research in palliative and oncology wards in 11 Croatian health care facilities on 162 nurses, using a questionnaire and paper/pencil method over 6 months (1 January 2021 to 1 July 2021). The questionnaire consisted of three parts: sociodemographic data, a Measure of moral distress for health care professionals and Moral injury symptoms scale for health care professionals. The research protocol was approved by the Ethics committee of the Catholic University of Croatia under no. 1‐21‐04. Results: The findings of our study demonstrated that the current average levels of moral distress might be characterized as low, but the moral injury symptoms are severe. The results of our study bring interesting novel insights, such as the strong correlation between moral distress and moral injury, but also in terms of nurses' decision to leave or consider leaving their position. The nurses who experience higher levels of moral distress experience severe symptoms of moral injury, while nurses who score higher in moral distress and moral injury have left, considered or consider leaving their positions. Conclusions: This study highlighted the need to pay attention to the emerging phenomenon of moral injury that has been unaddressed and overshadowed by moral distress, their intercorrelation, and the importance of addressing them timely and adequately within health care organizations with their leadership and management. Implications for Nursing Management: These findings provide a significant insight that may assist nursing managers and leaders to act and respond in time to develop various prevention and mitigation measures and help resolve situations leading to moral distress or moral injury. Aim: This study aims to design a 100‐h training programme for nursing innovation teams and to evaluate the effect of this training programme using Kirkpatrick's model. Background: The innovative capability of nurses is a powerful driver for the development of the nursing discipline, and it is currently at a low to medium level in China. Innovation competency development has become a research trend in nurses' in‐service education, but only changes in nursing innovation behaviours before and after training have been evaluated. The cascading, continuous assessment tools are rarely used. Methods: This is a quasi‐experimental research design: pretest and posttest design. Totally, 61 clinical nurses from Hangzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine were enrolled for innovation training. This innovation team training programme consisted of a 36‐h theoretical training phase and a 64‐h collaborative training phase. The four levels of Kirkpatrick's model, that is, reaction, learning, behaviour, and result, were applied for the evaluation together with questionnaires. Results: At reaction level, the nurses' attendance was over 85% in two phases. The differences between nurse organizational innovation climate scores of tested nurses before and after training were statistically significant (t = −22.559, P <.001). At learning level, there were statistically significant differences between nurses' innovation self‐efficacy scale scores of tested nurses before and after training (t = −16.832, P <.001). At behaviour level, the nursing innovation behaviour scale scores of tested nurses were significantly higher after training (t = −18.950, P <.001) than before the training. At result level, the clinical nurse innovation ability of tested nurses after the training were higher than before the training (t = −26.275, P <.001). The numbers of patent applications, granted patents, application for scientific research projects, sponsored scientific research projects, and papers published by team members after the training were larger than those before training (Z = −2.032, P =.042). Conclusion: Kirkpatrick's model can evaluate the effectiveness of nursing innovation training for clinical nurses. The nursing innovation training is beneficial to improve nurses' innovation capacity, organizational innovation climate and innovation self‐efficacy, and nursing innovation behaviour and promote the output of research and innovation projects. Implications for Nursing Management: Managers can flexibly develop training modules with regional characteristics based on this programme to effectively improve the innovation ability of clinical nurses, thus meeting the urgent demand for innovative nursing talents and the rapid development of nursing disciplines. Aims: To analyze whether patient verbal aggression would be related to emotional exhaustion and whether this relationship would be mediated by work–family conflict and moderated by dehumanization and resilience. Background: Although patient verbal aggression has been identified as one of the most experienced forms of aggression, its effects on Italian health care providers during the pandemic are still poorly known. Methods: A total of 197 Italian health care professionals completed paper‐and‐pencil questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and moderated mediation analyses were performed. Results: Patient verbal aggression was positively related to health care professionals' emotional exhaustion, both directly and indirectly, as mediated by work–family conflict. Health care providers were more likely to become emotionally exhausted when they had low resilience and, simultaneously, tended to ascribe patients non‐uniquely human traits. Conclusions: Patient verbal aggression may spill over onto health care professionals' family lives. Dehumanization represents an ineffective coping strategy that exacerbates the effects of aggression on work–family conflict, whereas resilience represents a protective resource against emotional exhaustion. Implications for nursing management: Hospital organisations could benefit from providing their staff with stress management interventions, aggression management, psychological support and psychological resilience training programmes. Aim: To explore the experiences of a nursing team who implemented an international nurse‐led clinical trial in practice and understand the facilitators to their involvement. Background: The role and responsibilities of the clinical nurse are advancing to encompass research activity to help inform evidence‐based practice. However, several personal and organisational challenges can inhibit nurses' capacity to implement and undertake research within clinical practice. Methods: Three focus groups were conducted with members of a nursing team (N = 18). Thematic analysis was employed, and themes were identified and agreed upon by the research team. Results: Five themes were identified: 'Previous experience of and attitudes to participation in clinical research', 'Decision‐making regarding participation in the clinical trial', 'Facilitators of participation in the clinical trial', 'Challenges of research in nursing practice' and 'Future orientation towards research'. Conclusion: Through their experiences of implementing a nurse‐led clinical trial within practice, nurses recognized a number of facilitators and challenges to their participation. The perceived relevance of the clinical trial to the nurses' practice, potential to improve patient care and appreciation of the nurse leader's expertise and understanding of their context were key motivators. Reciprocal trust with the nurse leader who was encouraging, motivating, supportive and accessible resulted in the engagement and commitment of the nursing team. Implications for Nursing Management: This paper offers a perspective that can inform senior nursing management teams when implementing and conducting evidence‐based research amongst nursing teams and in doing so meet the needs of developing research capacity amongst clinical nurses. Aim(s): This paper investigated the impact of organisational dehumanization on nurses' deviant behaviours in the Pakistani health sector directly and indirectly through job stress. The study also examined the moderation role of occupational self‐efficacy on the relationship between organisational dehumanization and job stress. Background: While the attitudinal outcomes of organisational dehumanization have been a focus of research, its behavioural outcomes are a relatively ignored research area. Method: Data were collected from 295 nurses working in hospitals across Pakistan via self‐administered questionnaires with two measurement points to test the direct and indirect effects of organisational dehumanization. Results: The hypothesized relationships were tested with SPSS 25 and the Process Macro Model 7. The results showed that organisational dehumanization increased deviant behaviours among nurses directly and indirectly via job stress. Moreover, occupational self‐efficacy plays moderation role and weakens the relationship between organisational dehumanization and job stress. Conclusion: This study contributes to the existing literature by concentrating on predictors that trigger deviant behaviour among nurses. It also assessed the mediating impact of job stress, an essential endeavour for researchers and practitioners. Implications for Nursing Management: The study outcomes can help the health sector improve their strategies to address organisational dehumanization and deviant behaviour among nurses. Aim(s): This paper examined the impact of workplace bullying (WPB) on mild aggressive deviant behaviour, such as knowledge hiding and employee time theft, in Pakistani health care institutions. Additionally, this study investigated the mediating role of negative emotions on the relationship between WPB and its outcomes. Background: Although mild deviant behaviour has been proven to affect the health care sector, its antecedents are still untapped. Method: Data were collected from 233 nurses working in hospitals located across Pakistan via self‐administered questionnaires in three time lags to test both the direct and indirect effects of WPB. The hypothesized correlations were tested using structural equation modelling (SEM). Results: The results revealed that WPB increased knowledge hiding and employee time theft amongst nurses. The indirect effect of negative emotions was established on the aforementioned relationships. Conclusion: This study contributes to the existing literature by concentrating on predictors that trigger deviant behaviour amongst nurses. It also assessed the mediating impact of emotions, wherein such endeavour is essential for researchers and practitioners. Abstract: Aims: This paper reports on rounding interventions employed at high performing hospitals, and provides three case studies on how proactive nurse rounding was successfully implemented to improve patient‐centredness. Background: Proactive nurse rounding is a popular form of rounding that has shown promise for improving patient outcomes, yet, little evidence exists on how to implement it successfully. Methods: We identified high‐performing hospitals in the domains of staff responsiveness and nurse communications in the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Health Providers and Systems survey nationally, and conducted case studies at three of these hospitals exploring their implementation of proactive nurse rounding. We partnered with leaders from these hospitals to describe the associated challenges and lessons learned. Results: Twenty‐six high performing hospitals in the domains of staff responsiveness and/or nurse communication were identified. The majority of nursing units reported proactive nurse rounding as their main rounding intervention (96%). Conclusions: Proactive rounding interventions are a feasible approach to help surface and address hospitalized patients’ needs in a timely manner. Implications for Nursing Management: The information and tools provided in this paper build upon the learning from high performing hospitals’ experiences and are useful to nurse leaders in their efforts to improve the patient‐centeredness in the hospital. Aim: To assess the perception of the nursing profession in Armenia from the perspective of multiple stakeholders, including nurses and the general public. Background: Nurses' role perception is a complex phenomenon defined by multiple stakeholders. Methods: The assessment used a convergent parallel mixed‐methods design, with a dominant qualitative status. We conducted the qualitative phase through focus group discussions and in‐depth interviews with 235 people and collected quantitative data in a cross‐sectional telephone survey with 389 participants. Results: The nursing profession has been influenced by medical hierarchy and subordination, and none of the participants recognized nursing as an autonomous health care profession. The quantitative survey findings were largely consistent with the qualitative results. Our findings highlighted empathy and compassion as inherent qualities of nurses in Armenia. Conclusion: To change opinions about the nursing profession and highlight nurses' meaningful contribution to the provision of health care services, it is important to develop a national definition of nursing and introduce higher educational opportunities for nurses in Armenia. Implications for nursing management: The paper highlights the importance of quality education for preparing highly competent nurse managers who can become role models in promoting nurses' roles in health care systems and improving the professional and public image of nursing. Aim: This study investigated the relationship between work engagement and inclusive leadership in Chinese hospital head nurses. Besides, it explored the effect of the mediating role of inclusive leadership in the relationship between work engagement and innovative behaviour among Chinese hospital head nurses. Background: Head nurses are essential in the group of registered nurses who are to pass the Chinese licensure examination for nurses. Their work engagement and innovative behaviour are beneficial to improve the quality, efficiency and competitiveness of nursing services. However, little is known about the mediating role of inclusive leadership in the relationship between work engagement and innovative behaviour. Methods: In April 2018, a total of 374 Chinese head nurses were surveyed with a Work Engagement Scale, an Inclusive Leadership Scale and an Innovative Behavior Scale. Because the data were normally distributed in our study, Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) was used to conduct the correlation analysis of study variables. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to explore the factors of innovative behaviour. Model 4 of Hayes's (2013) PROCESS macro and Bootstrap method was used to examine the mediating role of inclusive leadership. Result: Inclusive leadership was significantly and positively correlated to innovative behaviour and work engagement (p < 0.01). Moreover, work engagement was correlated with innovative behaviour (p < 0.01). In addition, hospital level, publishing papers, work engagement and inclusive leadership were the factors of head nurses' innovative behaviour (p < 0.01). Inclusive leadership partially mediated the relationship between work engagement and innovative behaviour, accordingly. Conclusion: Work engagement affects innovative behaviour among Chinese head nurses, and inclusive leadership is a mediator in the relationship. We should take measures to improve the leaders' level of inclusive leadership, in order to strengthen head nurses' innovative behaviour. Implications for nursing management: According to the results of the study, the leaders of head nurses should pay attention to improve head nurses' innovative behaviour, inclusive leadership, work engagement, and the quality and competitiveness of nursing. Aim: This research investigated the relationship between perceived career opportunities, affective commitment to the supervisor, and social isolation from colleagues on the one hand and nurses' well‐being and turnover intentions on the other. In addition, this study explored the mediating role of affective commitment to the organisation in these relationships. Background: Previous research suggested that organisational commitment explained the effect of nurses' work environment on their turnover intentions. However, less is known about how organisational commitment may contribute to explain nurses' well‐being. Method: This research used a cross‐sectional design. A sample of 244 nurses completed a questionnaire survey. Results: Results indicated that affective commitment to the organisation partially mediates the relationships between perceived career opportunities, affective commitment to the supervisor, and social isolation on one hand, and turnover intentions and well‐being on the other hand. Conclusion: This study showed that the way nurses assess various aspects of their work experience transposes to their emotional bond to their organisation, which in turn explains their well‐being and turnover intentions. Aim: To examine the effect of nurse staffing patterns (nursing staff skill mix and patient classification system) on patient satisfaction with the nursing care received. Background: Evidence about the relationship between the nursing staff structures and patient outcomes in post‐transitional countries is limited. Methods: The research was conducted in three units of one secondary‐care regional hospital in Slovenia over 1 month. This cross‐sectional study used three main data elements exploring nursing staff levels (nursing hours per patient day and skill mix), patient needs (using a classification system), and patients' satisfaction with nursing care; 484 patients participated. Results: Significant positive correlations were found between the patients' satisfaction and the realized percentage of the registered nurse personnel requirements, the level of nursing care hours per patient day, and the proportion of registered nurses in the nursing team. Conclusions: A significant association between the actual and needed staffing levels and patient satisfaction was found. Nurse staffing patterns affect patient outcomes. Implications for Nursing Management: This paper supports a higher proportion of registered nurses and an increased number of overall nursing staff working hours. Managers should consider the results of the patient needs categorization system and the workforce structure characteristics as predictors of patient satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: This paper reports the findings from a 2015 survey of the Commissioning Nurse Leaders' Network. Our aim was to understand how governing body nurses perceive their influence and leadership on clinical commissioning groups. Methods: An online survey method was used with a census sample of 238 governing body nurses and nurses working in Commissioning Support Units, who were members of the Commissioning Nurse Leaders' Network. The response rate was 40.7% (n = 97). Results: While most governing body nurses felt confident in their leadership role, this was less so for non‐executive governing body nurses. Nurses in Commissioning Support Units were much less positive than governing body nurses about their influence on clinical commissioning groups. Conclusion: Governing body nurses were satisfied with their impact on clinical commissioning groups and so could be said to be leading a nursing agenda but this evidence is limited to their own perceptions and more objective or diverse measures of impact are needed. The purpose of such roles to ‘represent nursing, and ensure the patient voice is heard’ may be a flawed aspiration, conflating nursing leadership and patient voice. Implications for nursing management: This is the first study to explore explicitly the differences between executive and non‐executive governing body nurses and nurses working in commissioning support units. Achieving clinical commissioning groups' goals, including developing and embedding nursing leadership roles in clinical commissioning groups, may be threatened if the contributions of governing body nurses, and other nurses supporting clinical commissioning groups, go unrecognised within the profession, or if general practitioners or other clinical commissioning group executive members dominate decision‐making on clinical commissioning groups. Aim The purpose of the paper was to compare the prevalence of barriers to optimum postoperative pain management in elderly patients, observed by nurses in a clinical, provincial and municipal hospital in Poland. Background It is currently estimated that the lack of adequate pain management affects 80% of the global population and the phenomenon poses a serious problem in more than 150 countries. Methods A questionnaire-based study of 1602 nurses working at clinical, provincial and municipal hospitals. Results In the clinical hospitals barriers more often related to a poorly organised systems of care and obstacles in discussing pain management within the team. In provincial and municipal hospitals lack of uninform pain measurement was more evident. Conclusions Despite the availability of effective pain treatments in hospitals difficulties continue with communication, poorly organised care and limited access to clinical guidelines. Implications for nursing management Although there are possibilities of pain relief after surgery, they are still used insufficiently. Postoperative pain management in Poland needs considerable improvement. This study can contribute to the improvement of pain management quality by supporting and developing practical guidelines or management algorithms for nurses, facilitating the effective implementation of new pain management practices. Aim To describe the ethical activity profile of nurse managers ( NM). Background Ethical responsibilities require nurse managers to perform certain ethical activities. In this study, these activities are referred to as an ethical activity profile and are divided into five dimensions: (1) developing one's own ethics knowledge, (2) influencing ethical issues, (3) conducting or implementing ethics research, (4) identifying and (5) solving ethical problems. This paper focuses on the first four dimensions. Methods Survey data were collected in 2011 using a questionnaire (mainly open questions) amongst managers at the ward, middle and strategic levels ( n = 122). The data were analysed using inductive content analysis and quantification. Results The ethical activity profile of nurse managers was high, referring to the identification of various work-related ethical problems [related to staff (31%), the nurse managers themselves (29%), resources (17%), patients (12%), superiors (7%) and organisations (4%)]. However, developing one's own ethics knowledge, influencing ethical issues and conducting or implementing research dimensions of the ethical activity profile were low. Conclusions There is room to improve the ethical activity profile of nurse managers. Aims This paper compares the perceptions of nurse managers and nurses about self-leadership of professional nurses while taking ownership of capacity building during unit management. Background The Nursing Strategy for South Africa states that the competency of nurses is dependent upon factors that lead to capacity building. Method A quantitative design was followed by conducting a survey. The target population included nurse managers and professional nurses working at an academic public hospital in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Results The findings indicate shortcomings in relation to advising professional nurses about self-direction while taking ownership of their daily pressures and stresses associated with unit management. Conclusion Professional nurses should develop their confidence by focusing on their self-leadership strengths when managing a unit. Aim This paper reports on the development of an instrument for nurse-led medication monitoring, the West Wales Adverse Drug Reaction profile for respiratory medicines, as part of a strategy to reduce avoidable adverse drug reactions. Background Preventable adverse drug reactions account for 3.7% hospital admissions. Nurse-led medication monitoring may reduce drug-related harm. However, development of medication monitoring strategies is not reported elsewhere. Methods The profile was developed by: (1) cognitive interviews ( n = 4), (2) the content validity index ( n = 10) involving academics, clinicians and service users prescribed respiratory medicines, (3) inter-rater reliability ( n = 48) and clinical gains in a nurse-led outpatient clinic. Results Cognitive interviews prompted more profile changes than either the content validity index or inter-rater reliability testing. Cohen's κ for inter-rater reliability for each item ranged from 0.73-1.00 (good to complete agreement). The profile identified previously unsuspected problems in all participants, including muscular weakness, skin and mouth problems. Conclusions The West Wales Adverse Drug Reaction profile was valid and reliable, and helped to detect and ameliorate drug-related harm. Implications for nursing management The West Wales Adverse Drug Reaction profile offers opportunities to improve care. Medication monitoring provides the structure to concurrently monitor known adverse drug reactions. Aim The aim of this project was to develop and deliver an evidence-based educational package with a physical and mental health focus to clinicians and other health care workers in mental health settings. Background For individuals who experience mental disorders, pharmacotherapy is often considered as a first line of treatment. However, owing to adverse drug reactions and pre-existing physical conditions, outcomes for clients/service users may be compromised. Mortality and morbidity rates of people diagnosed with a serious mental illness caused by physical health conditions do not compare favourably with the general population. This paper reports on a physical skills project that was developed in collaboration between the University of Huddersfield and South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust. Method Pre-post study design: five workshops were conducted in the fields of intramuscular injections, diabetes, health improvement, oral health and wound care. A total of 180 pairs of questionnaires to assess practitioner and student skills and knowledge were administered to participants before and after workshops. All workshops resulted in a statistically significant improvement in subject skills and knowledge scores ( P < 0.001 in all cases). Questionnaires also elicited participant satisfaction with the workshops: over 99% of participants reported being 'satisfied' or 'very satisfied' with the workshops. Implications for nursing management Mental health nurses are the largest group of registered practitioners working in the mental health setting and thus need to be harnessed to make a positive contribution to the improvement of the physical health status of service users with a serious mental illness. Aim This paper reports on a study that looked at the characteristics of exemplary nurse leaders in times of change from the perspective of frontline nurses. Background Large-scale changes in the health care system and their associated challenges have highlighted the need for strong leadership at the front line. Methods In-depth personal interviews with open-ended questions were the primary means of data collection. The study identified and explored six frontline nurses' perceptions of the qualities of nursing leaders through qualitative content analysis. This study was validated by results from the current literature. Results The frontline nurses described several common characteristics of exemplary nurse leaders, including: a passion for nursing; a sense of optimism; the ability to form personal connections with their staff; excellent role modelling and mentorship; and the ability to manage crisis while guided by a set of moral principles. All of these characteristics pervade the current literature regarding frontline nurses' perspectives on nurse leaders. Conclusion This study identified characteristics of nurse leaders that allowed them to effectively assist and support frontline nurses in the clinical setting. Implications for nursing management The findings are of significance to leaders in the health care system and in the nursing profession who are in a position to foster development of leaders to mentor and encourage frontline nurses. Aim The aims of this paper are, first, to identify the determinants of the 'intention to leave' of nurses working at a general hospital, and, second, to provide recommendations for various stakeholders targeting prevention of premature leaving to various post-exit destinations. Background Nurse turnover is a serious problem, especially given the increased need for professional medical care because of demographic changes, and puts severe pressure on health-care management staff. In order to meet future requirements for nursing staff, it is of utmost importance to empirically study their intention to leave either their department or hospital, and to identify the determinants of these various intentions to leave. Method A cross-sectional survey was completed by 318 nurses working at various departments at a general hospital in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Data were collected in May 2011. Using binary regression analysis, various determinants of nurses' reported post-exit career choices could be identified. Conclusion Nurses' intention to leave is determined by their general satisfaction with management and leadership quality, their satisfaction with pay and benefits, their job satisfaction and work-to-home interference issues they have to deal with, but not by career development opportunities. Implications for nursing management Preventing nurses from leaving their department or hospital requires careful attention from management and human resources professionals working in hospitals. In particular, the line managers who actually supervise nurses on a daily basis are key in ensuring that nurses are satisfied with their management and with the rewards they receive, and are able to cope with work-home interference. Aim This paper reports upon the development, delivery and evaluation of a leadership programme for aspiring Ward Leaders in one National Health Service Trust in England. Background The ward sister role is fundamental to quality patient care and clinical leadership, however the role is increasingly difficult to recruit to. A lack of formal preparation and skills development for the role has been widely acknowledged. Method An evaluation of a programme of education for leadership. Three cohorts ( n = 60) completed the programme. Semi-structured questionnaires were completed by participants ( n = 36: 60%) at the conclusion of the programme. Qualitative data from questionnaires was analysed using a thematic approach. Results Participants reported increased political, organizational and self-awareness, increased confidence, feelings of empowerment and the ability to empower others. Opportunities for networking with peers were valued within the action learning approach. For some participants, career intentions were clarified through reflection. Conclusion The majority of participants had benefited from the leadership programme and valued this development as an empowering preparation for future careers. Implications for nursing management Investment in leadership preparation for future ward sister roles is strongly recommended as part of a strategy designed to enhance quality improvement, career path development, workforce empowerment and retention. A quasi-experimental 4-year follow-up study Aim The aim of the present paper is to report results of a quasi-experimental study exploring the effects of clinical supervision (CS) on the development of medical-surgical nurses' well-being at work over a 4-year period. Background Effective workplace interventions are needed to prevent stress and burnout. More robust scientific evidence is needed to confirm the restorative effects of CS in nursing. Methods A questionnaire survey on the perceptions of work and health was conducted in 2003 and 2007 on 14 units of a Finnish university hospital where 19 CS group processes had been completed between 2004 and 2007. Results Improvement in job resources as well as reduction in professional inefficacy and psychological distress were found among nurses who received effective CS ( n = 41), but were not present among the nurses who found their CS less effective ( n = 43) or who did not attend CS ( n = 82). Conclusions The results provide robust evidence for the positive effects of CS on medical-surgical nurses' well-being at work. Implications for nursing management Stress is a developmental challenge in the professional growth of individual nurses. Based on a multimethod survey of students from two British universities, this paper explores their perceptions of three very different initiatives, each at different stages of development and implementation. The‘Home Trust’ initiative, provided the majority of clinical placements in one hospital. It was experienced by almost all the students who reported on it in questionnaires ( n = 650), focus groups ( n = 7) and interviews ( n = 30). The‘On Secondment’ initiative, seconded Health Care Assistants from their jobs into nurse education. It was experienced by a small number of students who reported on it in questionnaires ( n = 32) and focus groups ( n = 3). The‘Recruitment Clearing House’ initiative planned to provide one interview for a range of hospitals and job vacancies in a large geographical catchment area. At the time of data collection, it was in a conceptual phase and was commented on in a small number of focus groups with students ( n = 3). In addition, this initiative was commented on by recruitment managers in interviews ( n = 3). Students held strong views on the positive and negative features of both current and prospective initiatives. Unique consumer insights were gained, particularly into their finer details and consequences. Background Efficient and valid methods are needed to measure nursing work to enhance the optimal use of the nursing workforce for safe patient care. Methods The study combined human factors engineering (HFE) and nursing knowledge to develop electronic standardized measures for observational studies on nursing work in acute care. Results The work and work environment of RNs and PNs in acute care medical and surgical inpatient units was successfully measured using e-SMNW. With predetermined items of work activities and influencing factors in the work of nurses, and full use of computer technology, multi-layered rich standardized data were gathered, analysed and displayed. Conclusions The combination of nursing knowledge, HFE and computer technology enables observational data collection for a rich picture of the complex work of nursing. Implications for nursing management Information collected by standardized and multi-layered measures makes it easier to identify potential improvements, with regard to influencing factors and management of the work and work environment of nurses.
