This Reader brings together selected papers from leading scholars to address the most significant recent development in educational policy and politics: the impact of globalisation. The papers discuss, document and analyse evidence of globalisation's effects on the new direction of education policies and practices, and in the production of globalised agendas for the redesign of state provision and the governance of education. The Reader is organised in two parts. The chapters in this book are based on selected peer reviewed research papers presented at the 11th biennial Networked Learning Conference (NLC) 2018 held in Zagreb and were chosen as exemplars of cutting edge research on networked learning. The chapters are organized into three main sections: 1) Aspects of mobility for Networked Learning in a global world, 2) Use and misuse of algorithms and learning analytics, 3) Understanding and empowering learners. The three main sections are flanked by chapters which introduce and reflect on Networked Learning as epistemic practice. The concluding chapter draws out perspectives from the chapters and discusses emerging issues. The book focuses on the nature of learning and interactions as an important characteristic sought out by researchers and practitioners in this field.

This book draws together many previously published articles and book chapters produced by the author over the past 20 years of work in the field of indigenous education. However, rather than just being a compilation of a series of papers, this book is a record of the development of an indigenous approach towards large-scale, theory-based education reform that is now being implemented, in two different forms, in almost half of the secondary schools in New Zealand. Fundamental to this theorising is the understanding, identified by Paulo Freire over forty years ago, that answers to the conditions oppressed peoples find themselves in is not to be found in the language or understandings of the oppressors. Rather, it is to be found in those of the oppressed. This realisation has been confirmed by the examples in this book. The first is seen where it is identified how researching in Maori contexts needs to be conducted dialogically within the world view and understandings of Maori people. Secondly, dialogue in its widest sense is crucial for developing a means whereby Maori students are able to participate successfully in education.The book details how researching the impact of colonization on his mother's Maori family enabled the author to develop a means of researching within indigenous, Maori contexts. It then details how the lessons learnt here appealed as being a means by which the marginalization of Maori students in mainstream, public school classrooms could be re-theorised, and how schools and education systems could be reorganised so as to support indigenous students to be successful learners.

This book documents an informal system of education that emerged in Ireland between the late 1750s and the end of the century, a system that operated largely without funding or direction by church or state. In a society as divided as eighteenth-century Ireland, it is remarkable that such a system could succeed, paving the way for the more formal reforms of Irish education that followed in the nineteenth century. Based on detailed evidence from newspaper advertisements, directories, educational prospectuses, textbooks, and other print documents from the period as well as previously unexamined manuscript resources, the author describes this system and how it functioned, emphasizing the transnational dimensions of print culture, English literature, and education reform.

This book presents an Asian perspective on transformative science education in the context of the United Nations'Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The chapters are written by contributors who practiced science education for sustainability in a research project entitled “Teacher Education for ESD in the Asia-Pacific Region” from 2017 to 2019, supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, and the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the development of smart education in China. The study illustrates the paradoxical relationship between nationalization and internationalization in the case of Albanian higher education. It demonstrates how global transformational processes and foreign policy have impacted the international dimension of higher education as a nation-building institution. The analysis considers the effect of foreign policy and the interactions between the state, the university, and the cultural elite. This book examines the impact of neoliberalism on the academisation of the English school system. The growth of multi-academy trusts (MATs) has been a significant change in the English educational landscape. While some schools have been forced to join MATs, many of them have made this change because their governing board has chosen to do so. The author of this book examines the reasons why many governing bodies have still decided to join a MAT, despite numerous controversies linked to them. He applies the theory that neoliberalism perpetuates itself by creating crises which require more neoliberal policy solutions. Using three case-study schools, the extent to which various crises in the English education system have encouraged governing boards to join MATs is studied. This book is a curated collection of international chapters focused on the reform of K-12 schools. Three key, yet different cultural, economic, and political settings are highlighted: Australia, the UK, and the US. Within their own context, each author details the required reforms that would maximize learning for all students. The intersectionalities of factors such a race, gender, class, ethnicity, disability, language, and economic inequities, are interrogated for their impact on the efficacy of reform strategies. Authors explore both a range of dysfunctional factors which have historically limited the efficacy of school reform initiatives, and detail a variety of forward-looking and cutting edge alternative reforms. Thus, this text can serve to stimulate a much need dialogue about the reconceptualization of schools in the future. Moreover, the cross-cultural analysis can focus this dialogue on both the similarities and differences in varying cultural settings.

This book examines the development of British post-Second World War short-term residential adult education, through the lens of the Shropshire Adult Education College (1948-1976) and the tenure of Sir George Trevelyan as its first warden. Trevelyan is acknowledged as the godfather of new-age spiritualism in the UK and is credited with the development of eclectic and esoteric learning opportunities in arts, traditional crafts, culture and ecology. Embodying the spirit of a new national drive for optimism and enterprise in the post-war period, Trevelyan, and his contemporaries at other colleges, took risks and innovated in new pedagogical approaches to adult education, capturing the imagination of hundreds of students, before being stifled by an increasingly restrictive policy framework and financial strictures. The book considers the ideological drivers and tensions behind this unique form of education - its inception, evolution and virtual demise - and seeks to learn from its complex history to inform education in the future.

Globalization has become one of the most recurrent concepts in social and political sciences. More often than not, however, the concept is handled without much of a properly articulated theory capable of explaining its historical origin and expansion. This book chronicles the school envisioned by Eleanor Roosevelt in 1933 to serve Arthurdale, the New Deal government-created community in north-central West Virginia. Arthurdale was founded to house unemployed miners and their families and provide them with opportunities to receive healthcare and obtain gainful employment. Roosevelt had a particular interest in the education of children, feeling that education and social life were profoundly intertwined within a community. With that in mind, in 1934, she hired Elsie Ripley Clapp—an educator and leader in the Progressive Education movement—to design and implement the school, as well as oversee the social life of Arthurdale as a whole. In addition to covering the Arthurdale School's birth, life, and dissolution, Rosenberg discusses how the lessons of the school might serve the culture of education today, especially as an element of a comprehensive approach to community revitalization.

This book focuses on the complex relationship between education and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlights how important context is for both critiquing and achieving the Goals though education, given the critical role teachers, schools and curriculum play in young people's lives. An dieser Spannung setzen die Beiträge des Bandes an und fragen sowohl nach den Herausforderungen der ›Bildung‹ durch ›Digitalität‹ als auch umgekehrt nach den Anforderungen an ›Digitalität› durch ›Bildung‹. Das macht aber nötig, ›Digitalisierung‹ nicht bloß als (gar technische) Anwendungsproblematik und didaktische Herausforderung aufzunehmen, sondern auch (grundlagen-)theoretisch zu reflektieren. Dabei werden entlang der Fragen nach den jeweiligen Medien-, Subjekt- und Wissensformationen des ›Digitalen‹ auch Konturen eines pädagogischen Strukturwandels erkennbar und diskutierbar.

This book explores the interlinkages between copyright and tertiary education regimes, and their complementary roles for sustainable human development. Emphasizing issues that are not addressed in-depth in the existing works, this book employs a new theoretical perspective in order to inform the exploration of the interlinkages through the lens of human development. To this effect, the book adopts the capabilities approach (CA) as an inclusive development framework that is suitable for examining the interfaces among copyright, tertiary education, and human development in Ethiopia.

This volume explores the socio-cultural and media background of a critical and ongoing political challenge: the complex entanglement between European integration and strong national agendas in the context of globalisation. It does so using educational media - both textbooks and digital media - as sites of cultural contestation to enquire into the intricate relationships around national and European identities and aspects of students'knowledge and reception. Using a variety of methods and technologies, the chapters analyse identity constructions present in educational media discourses, embedded as they are in their national and European contexts and as both the catalysts and products of their time. The book is a study of the post-digital condition in an educational context, exploring the potential of digital humanities and linguistic approaches for educational media research and employing methods such as eye-tracking or concept maps.

Die in dieser Studie empirisch nachgezeichneten Reaktionen auf subjektive, ökonomische und regionale Veränderungen während der Pandemie werden in Bezug zu den lebensweltlich-kulturellen Orientierungen der BewohnerInnen gebracht. An Gemeinden in der Steiermark (A) wird exemplarisch gezeigt, wie Kommunen mit den bestehenden Versorgungs- und Infrastrukturbedingungen zurechtgekommen sind, und wie Menschen in diesen Gemeinden lernend einen Weg im Familienverbund, in der Nachbarschaft, in der Berufswelt oder den Vereinen gefunden haben bzw. welche Aspekte in den genannten Lebenswelten als hilfreiche Instrumente wahrgenommen wurden.

In this book, the authors'post-capitalist approach to change focuses less on what we need to dismantle and more on what educators and activists are building in its place. Studying schools and other social organizations in the Global North and South, the authors identify and examine some of the most interesting counterhegemonic spaces in both formal and informal education today. They view these spaces through a lens of what Gloria Anzaldua and Homi Bhabha call borderlands or'third spaces.'These third spaces are created in-between our lived cultural and social identities (first space) and the dominant culture that seeks to define us (second space). This book seeks to better understand how these third spaces conceive of learning, how they are created, the range of experiences among them, the obstacles they face, how they are sustained over time, and how they have built global networks of solidarity. This book offers a rich account of how quality improvement agendas, informed by neoliberalism, create contradictory and complex contexts in which teachers produce different types of practices for specific purposes. Drawing on Michel Foucault's analytical tools, archaeology and genealogy, this book weaves together findings from classroom observations, field notes and interviews to explore the dichotomies between practices focussing on day-to-day pedagogies and practices concerned with performance management and accountability initiatives. By attending to a Foucauldian conception of power and counter conduct, it explores new means of defining quality in teaching spaces. After considering existing quality assurance judgements, the book illuminates the significance of moving slightly away from an institutionalised enterprise culture and loosing relations with reductionist approaches as a starting point. While doing so, it reworks the idea of quality by presenting other ways of looking at the complex character of pedagogical real(s) with new insights into an emergentist and process-oriented conception of teaching practices. The book argues that we need to unlearn our existing knowledge of quality that overlooks contextual constraints and opportunities enmeshed in teaching practices. It questions the assumptions that the existing methods of observation are capable of quantifying the quality of education in a classroom or in a college in toto. Le rôle des acteurs non étatiques ne se limite pas à la prestation de services éducatifs, il s'étend aussi aux interventions menées à différents niveaux d'éducation et au sein de diverses sphères d'influence. Parallèlement à son examen des progrès accomplis en vue de la réalisation de l'ODD 4 – examen qui porte notamment sur les nouvelles données probantes relatives à l'impact de la pandémie de COVID-19 – le Rapport mondial de suivi sur l'éducation 2021/2 exhorte les gouvernements à considérer l'ensemble des établissements, des élèves et des enseignants comme faisant partie d'un système unique. Les normes, les données, les mesures incitatives et la redevabilité doivent aider les gouvernements à protéger, à respecter et à faire valoir le droit à l'éducation de tous, tout en gardant à l'esprit les privilèges et l'exploitation. Si l'enseignement financé par des fonds publics ne doit pas nécessairement être dispensé par le système public, les disparités des processus éducatifs, les résultats des élèves et les conditions de travail des enseignants doivent toutefois être abordés. Plutôt que d'être protégées à tout prix par le secret commercial, l'efficacité et l'innovation devraient être diffusées et pratiquées par tous. Pour y parvenir et faire barrage aux intérêts particuliers, il convient de préserver la transparence et l'intégrité des processus d'élaboration des politiques publiques relatives à l'éducation. L'appel au ralliement du Rapport – Qui décide? Qui est perdant? – invite les décideurs à remettre en question leurs relations avec les acteurs non étatiques au regard de leurs choix fondamentaux : entre la liberté de choix et l'équité ; entre l'encouragement des initiatives et la définition de normes ; entre des groupes de population aux moyens et besoins différents ; entre leurs engagements immédiats souscrits dans le cadre de l'ODD 4 et ceux qui doivent être réalisés progressivement (par exemple, l'éducation postsecondaire) ; ainsi qu'entre l'éducation et d'autres secteurs sociaux.

This edited book is uniquely set in the context of Chinese societies. It deals with the issues of inclusive education in a Chinese context and examines inclusion from the experience of Hong Kong schools.Like other countries, in Hong Kong, inclusive education has been promoted through Integrated Education (IE) and the Whole-School Approach (WSA). Recently, the government has introduced the induction of Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) in each Hong Kong school to help diverse students, especially students with special educational needs (SEN) and to develop inclusive teaching and learning practices. The Handbook of Critical Approaches to Politics and Policy of Education provides a broad overview of educational policy and politics from critical perspectives engaging with both foundational and cutting edge topics. In critical perspectives, educational policy debates and programs for reform are about more than narrow questions of efficacy say to raise test scores or for simply more educational inclusion, fairer school spending, or even cultural responsiveness. Rather, policy and reform debates represent contested visions for schools and society by social groups vying for hegemony. Critical approaches to educational policy and politics see schooling and education more broadly as contested terrain in which competing visions for education are imbricated with the material and symbolic interests and cultural ideologies of different classes and cultural groups. Chapters in this volume are organized into five sections. The first three sections provide a foundational overview to educational policy and politics, covering culture and politics of education, political economy of education, and subjectivity and education.
