CHARME'99 is the tenth in a series of working conferences devoted to the dev- opment and use of leading-edge formal techniques and tools for the design and veri?cation of hardware and systems. Previous conferences have been held in Darmstadt (1984), Edinburgh (1985), Grenoble (1986), Glasgow (1988), Leuven (1989), Torino (1991), Arles (1993), Frankfurt (1995) and Montreal (1997). This workshop and conference series has been organized in cooperation with IFIP WG 10. 5. It is now the biannual counterpart of FMCAD, which takes place every even-numbered year in the USA. The 1999 event took place in Bad Her- nalb, a resort village located in the Black Forest close to the city of Karlsruhe. The validation of functional and timing behavior is a major bottleneck in current VLSI design systems. A predominantly academic area of study until a few years ago, formal design and veri?cation techniques are now migrating into industrial use. The aim of CHARME'99 is to bring together researchers and users from academia and industry working in this active area of research. Two invited talks illustrate major current trends: the presentation by G´erard Berry (Ecole des Mines de Paris, Sophia-Antipolis, France) is concerned with the use of synchronous languages in circuit design, and the talk given by Peter Jansen (BMW, Munich, Germany) demonstrates an application of formal methods in an industrial environment. The program also includes 20 regular presentations and 12 short presentations/poster exhibitions that have been selected from the 48 submitted papers.

This book presents state of the art research in theoretical computer science and related?elds. In particular, the following areas are discussed: automata theory, formal languages and combinatorics of words, graph transformations, Petri nets, concurrency, as well as natural and molecular computing. The articles are written by leading researchers in these areas. The writers were originally invited to contribute to this book but then the normal refereeing procedure was applied as well. All of the articles deal with some issue that has been under vigorous study during recent years. Still, the topics range from very classical ones to issues raised only two or three years ago. Both survey articles and papers attacking speci?c research problems are included. The book highlights some key issues of theoretical computer science, as they seem to us now at the beginning of the new millennium. Being a comprehensive overview of some of the most active current research in theoretical computer science, it should be of de?nite interest for all researchers in the areas covered. The topics range from basic decidability and the notion of information to graph grammars and graph transformations, and from trees and traces to aqueous algorithms, DNA encoding and self-assembly. Special e?ort has been given to lucid presentation. Therefore, the book should be of interest also for advanced students.

This volume contains the proceedings of FTRTFT 2002, the International S- posium on Formal Techniques in Real-Time and Fault-Tolerant Systems, held at the University of Oldenburg, Germany, 9–12 September 2002. This sym- sium was the seventh in a series of FTRTFT symposia devoted to problems and solutions in safe system design. The previous symposia took place in Warwick 1990, Nijmegen 1992, Lub ¨ eck 1994, Uppsala 1996, Lyngby 1998, and Pune 2000. Proceedings of these symposia were published as volumes 331, 571, 863, 1135, 1486, and 1926 in the LNCS series by Springer-Verlag. This year the sym- sium was co-sponsored by IFIP Working Group 2.2 on Formal Description of Programming Concepts. The symposium presented advances in the development and use of formal techniques in the design of real-time, hybrid, fault-tolerant embedded systems, covering all stages from requirements analysis to hardware and/or software - plementation. Particular emphasis was placed on UML-based development of real-time systems. Through invited presentations, links between the dependable systems and formal methods research communities were strengthened. With the increasing use of such formal techniques in industrial settings, the conference aimed at stimulating cross-fertilization between challenges in industrial usages of formal methods and advanced research. Inresponsetothecallforpapers,39submissionswerereceived.Eachsubm- sion was reviewed by four program committee members assisted by additional referees. At the end of the reviewing process, the program committee accepted 17 papers for presentation at the symposium.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of REFLECTION 2001, the Third Int- national Conference on Metalevel Architectures and Separation of Crosscutting Concerns, which was held in Kyoto, September 25-28, 2001. Metalevel architectures and re?ection have drawn the attention of researchers and practitioners throughout computer science. Re?ective and metalevel te- niques are being used to address real-world problems in such areas as: progr- ming languages, operating systems, databases, distributed computing, expert systems and web computing. Separation of concerns has been a guiding principle of software engineering for nearly 30 years, but its known bene?ts are seldom fully achieved in practice. This is primarily because traditional mechanisms are not powerful enough to handle many kinds of concerns that occur in practice. Over the last 10 years, to overcome the limitations of traditional frameworks, many researchers, including several from the re?ection community, have proposed new approaches. For the?rst time, papers on advanced approaches to separation of concerns were explicitly solicited. Following the success of previous conferences such as IMSA'92 in Tokyo, Re?ection'96 in San Francisco, and Re?ection'99 in Saint Malo, we hope that the conference provided an excellent forum for researchers with a broad range of interests in metalevel architectures, re?ective techniques, and separation of concerns in general.

In this insightful collection of essays, Maurice Wilkes shares his unique perspective on the development of computers and the current state of the art.
