Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly developing field of computer science which now plays an increasingly important role in many disciplines. A catalyst for significant change, research into AI is of particular importance in fields such as medicine and education, and as such has become an area to watch for many people worldwide. This book presents the proceedings of AIMEE 2023, the 7th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Medical Engineering and Education, held on 9 and 10 November 2023 in Guangzhou, China. The conference brought together top international researchers from around the world to exchange research results and address open issues in AI, medical engineering and education. A total of 238 submissions were received for AIMEE 2023, of which 89 papers were selected for presentation and publication after a rigorous international peer review process. The book is divided into 3 sections, covering artificial intelligence and scientific methodology; systems engineering and analysis: concepts, methods, and applications; and education reform and innovation. Artificial intelligence now plays an increasingly important role in the development of global industries and economies, and as such is currently changing our world significantly, making AI research a hot topic worldwide. This book presents the proceedings of ICICTA 2023, the 16th International Conference on Intelligent Computing Technology and Automation, held on 24-25 October 2023 in Xi'an, China. The conference is an annual forum dedicated to emerging and challenging topics in AI and its applications, and its aim is to bring together an international community of researchers and practitioners in the field of AI to share the latest research achievements, discuss recent advances influence future direction, and promote the diffusion of the discipline throughout the scientific community at large. A total of 322 submissions were received for ICICTA 2023, and each paper received at least 2 review reports in a rigorous peer-review procedure. Based on these reports, 141 papers were ultimately accepted and are included in this book. Semantic systems encompass a variety of technologies that play a fundamental role in our daily lives, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, knowledge graphs and ontology engineering, and enterprise vocabulary management. This book presents the proceedings of SEMANTiCS 2024, the 20th International Conference on Semantic Systems, held from 17 to 19 September 2024 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The conference has become recognized as important international event providing a regular opportunity for professionals and researchers actively engaged in harnessing the power of semantic computing and artificial intelligence to gather and discuss the possibilities and practical limitations of various transformative technologies. These include semantic web and artificial intelligence, as well as areas such as data science, machine learning, logic programming, content engineering, social computing, natural language processing, digital humanities, and many more. A total of 95 submissions were received for the conference. These were subjected to a double-anonymous peer review process, with a minimum of 3 independent reviews for each submission, after which 26 papers were accepted for presentation and publication, representing an acceptance rate of 27%. The papers are divided into 6 sections: knowledge engineering with large language models; embeddings and machine learning on knowledge graphs; ontologies and knowledge graphs; linked data management; question answering and querying systems; and digital humanities and cultural heritage. In its broadest sense, artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence exhibited by machines; computer systems in particular. Founded as an academic discipline in 1956, it was not until 2012, when deep learning outperformed previous AI techniques, that interest and investment increased enormously, ultimately leading to the situation today where it is sometimes hard for us to imagine a life without AI. This book presents the proceedings of CCIA2024, the 26th edition of the International Conference of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence, held from 2 – 4 October 2024 in Barcelona, Spain. The CCIA conferences now serve as a forum to bring together participants working on AI research from around the world. A total of 68 papers was received for the conference, and this book contains 26 long papers, 19 short papers, and 4 long abstracts (49 papers) which were ultimately accepted following a thorough peer review process, resulting in an acceptance rate of 72%. These are divided into 5 sections: machine learning and deep learning applications; natural language processing (NLP); artificial intelligence ethics and decision support systems; robotics and autonomous systems; and specialized applications of AI, and cover a wide range of AI domains, such as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, data science, and reinforcement learning. Critical AI applications across a number of fields are explored, including healthcare, smart services, environmental monitoring, and manufacturing, and topics such as the ethical considerations of AI, voice cloning, and decision-making support systems are also examined. Providing a current overview of new developments and ideas, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field of AI development.

The field of hybrid human-artificial intelligence (HHAI), although primarily driven by developments in AI, also requires fundamentally new approaches and solutions. Multidisciplinary in nature, it calls for collaboration across various research domains, such as AI, HCI, the cognitive and social sciences, philosophy and ethics, and complex systems, to name but a few. This book presents the proceedings of HHAI 2024, the 3rd International Conference on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence, held from 10-14 June 2024 in Malmö, Sweden. The focus of HHAI 2024 was on artificially-intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively and purposefully with humans, amplifying rather than replacing human intelligence. A total of 62 submissions were received for the main track of the conference, of which 31 were accepted for presentation after a thorough double blind review process. These comprised 9 full papers, 5 blue sky papers, and 17 working papers, making the final acceptance rate for full papers 29%. Acceptance rate across all tracks of the main program was 50%. This book contains all submissions accepted for the main track, as well as the proposals for the Doctoral Consortium and extended abstracts from the Posters and Demos track. Topics covered include human-AI interaction and collaboration; learning, reasoning and planning with humans and machines in the loop; fair, ethical, responsible, and trustworthy AI; societal awareness of AI; and the role of design and compositionality of AI systems in interpretable/collaborative AI, among others. Providing a current overview of research and development, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field and facilitate the ongoing exchange and development of ideas across a range of disciplines.

Applied intelligence, integrated with software, is an essential enabler for science and the new economy, creating new markets and new directions for a more reliable, flexible and robust society and empowering the exploration of our world in ever more depth. The available software, however, often falls short of expectations, with current methodologies, tools, and techniques still neither robust enough nor sufficiently reliable to adequately serve a constantly changing and evolving market. This proceedings presents 40 papers delivered at SoMeT 24, the 23rd edition of the International Conference on New Trends in Intelligent Software Methodology Tools, and Techniques, held on 24 and 25 September 2024 in Cancun, Mexico. The conference explored new trends and theories, illuminating the direction of developments by discussing issues ranging from research practices to techniques and methodologies and proposing and reporting on the solutions needed for global world business, and this book aims to capture the essence of a new state-of-the-art in software science and its supporting technologies, and to identify the challenges that such technologies will have to master. This book presents the proceedings of COMMA 2024, the 10th biennial International Conference on Computational Models of Argument, held from 18 to 20 September 2024 in Hagen, Germany. The COMMA conference series provides a dedicated forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest advancements in this interdisciplinary field, covering basic research, systems and innovative applications and nurturing the steady growth of interest in computational-argumentation research worldwide. A total of 63 submissions was received for the conference, and after a thorough review process 26 were accepted as full papers, with a further 12 accepted as demos accompanied by an extended abstract, and 2 as full papers with accompanying demo, resulting in an acceptance rate of 53% for full papers and 63% for papers and demo abstracts combined. In addition to these 40 papers, extended abstracts of the 3 invited talks are also included here: Semantics in Argumentation: Classifications and Challenges, by Leila Amgoud; Expanding the Scope of Bayesian Argumentation, by Ulrike Hahn; and The Long Road to Trustworthy Natural Language Argumentation, by Serena Villata. Developments in AI are occurring rapidly, with new applications constantly on the increase, and one of the areas in which interesting developments are always taking place is that of intelligent equipment and special robots. This book presents papers from ICIESR 2023, the 2nd International Conference on Intelligent Equipment and Special Robots, held from 20 to 22 October 2023 in Qingdao, China. The conference series has established a platform for experts, researchers, and students working in related fields to present, exchange, and discuss the latest advances and developments, linking various branches of science and technology. The concept of Big Data has become increasingly familiar in recent years, and it is already an indispensible tool in the management of everything from supply chains and transport to health and education. This book presents the proceedings of MMBD 2023, the 4th International Conference on Modern Management based on Big Data, held in Seoul, South Korea, from 1-4 August 2023. The term ‘intelligent environment'(IE) refers to a physical space that is enhanced by digital technologies. If only it were possible to develop automated and trainable neural systems that could justify their behavior in a way that could be interpreted by humans like a symbolic system. The field of Neurosymbolic AI aims to combine two disparate approaches to AI; symbolic reasoning and neural or connectionist approaches such as Deep Learning. The quest to unite these two types of AI has led to the development of many innovative techniques which extend the boundaries of both disciplines. This book, Compendium of Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence, presents 30 invited papers which explore various approaches to defining and developing a successful system to combine these two methods. Each strategy has clear advantages and disadvantages, with the aim of most being to find some useful middle ground between the rigid transparency of symbolic systems and the more flexible yet highly opaque neural applications. The papers are organized by theme, with the first four being overviews or surveys of the field. These are followed by papers covering neurosymbolic reasoning; neurosymbolic architectures; various aspects of Deep Learning; and finally two chapters on natural language processing. All papers were reviewed internally before publication. The book is intended to follow and extend the work of the previous book, Neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence: The state of the art (IOS Press; 2021) which laid out the breadth of the field at that time. Neurosymbolic AI is a young field which is still being actively defined and explored, and this book will be of interest to those working in AI research and development.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been much in the news recently, with some commentators expressing concern that AI might eventually replace humans. But many developments in AI are designed to enhance and supplement the performance of humans rather than replace them, and a novel field of study, with new approaches and solutions to the development of AI, has arisen to focus on this aspect of the technology. This book presents the proceedings of HHAI2023, the 2nd International Conference on Hybrid Human-Artificial Intelligence, held from 26-30 June 2023, in Munich, Germany. The HHAI international conference series is focused on the study of artificially intelligent systems that cooperate synergistically, proactively, responsibly and purposefully with humans, amplifying rather than replacing human intelligence, and invites contributions from various fields, including AI, human-computer interaction, the cognitive and social sciences, computer science, philosophy, among others. A total of 78 submissions were received for the main conference track, and most papers were reviewed by at least three reviewers. The overall final acceptance rate was 43%, with 14 contributions accepted as full papers, 14 as working papers, and 6 as extended abstracts. The papers presented here cover topics including interactive hybrid agents; hybrid intelligence for decision support; hybrid intelligence for health; and values such as fairness and trust in hybrid intelligence. We further accepted 17 posters and 4 demos as well as 8 students to the first HHAI doctoral consortium this year. The authors of 4 working papers and 2 doctoral consortium submissions opted for not publishing their submissions to allow a later full submission, resulting in a total of 57 papers included in this proceedings Addressing all aspects of AI systems that assist humans and emphasizing the need for adaptive, collaborative, responsible, interactive, and human-centered artificial intelligence systems which can leverage human strengths and compensate for human weaknesses while considering social, ethical, and legal considerations, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Technological advances related to legal information, knowledge representation, engineering, and processing have aroused growing interest within the research community and the legal industry in recent years. These advances relate to areas such as computational and formal models of legal reasoning, legal data analytics, legal information retrieval, the application of machine learning techniques to different legal tasks, and the experimental evaluation of these systems. This book presents the proceedings of JURIX 2023, the 36th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems, held from 18–20 December 2023 in Maastricht, the Netherlands. A total of 92 submissions were received for the conference, of which 18 were selected as long papers, 30 as short papers and 7 as demo papers following a rigorous review process. Topics covered include formal approaches applied to various aspects of legal reasoning; machine learning and information retrieval methods applied to various natural language processing tasks; hybrid approaches to working on the frontier between symbolic and sub-symbolic methods; experimental inquiries into the interfaces between computational systems and legal systems; and network analysis in law. Providing a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the field, the book will be of interest to all those working at the intersection between law and AI.

Artificial intelligence, or AI, now affects the day-to-day life of almost everyone on the planet, and continues to be a perennial hot topic in the news. This book presents the proceedings of ECAI 2023, the 26th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence, and of PAIS 2023, the 12th Conference on Prestigious Applications of Intelligent Systems, held from 30 September to 4 October 2023 and on 3 October 2023 respectively in Kraków, Poland. Since 1974, ECAI has been the premier venue for presenting AI research in Europe, and this annual conference has become the place for researchers and practitioners of AI to discuss the latest trends and challenges in all subfields of AI, and to demonstrate innovative applications and uses of advanced AI technology. ECAI 2023 received 1896 submissions – a record number – of which 1691 were retained for review, ultimately resulting in an acceptance rate of 23%. PAIS 2023 received 17 submissions, of which 10 were accepted after a rigorous review process. Those 10 papers cover topics ranging from fostering better working environments, behavior modeling and citizen science to large language models and neuro-symbolic applications, and are also included here. Presenting a comprehensive overview of current research and developments in AI, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

This book presents the proceedings of the 24th edition of CCIA, the International Conference of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence, held in Sitges, Spain, from 19 – 21 October 2022. This annual event serves as a meeting point not only for researchers in AI from the Catalan speaking territories (southern France, Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and Alghero in Italy) but for researchers from around the world. The programme committee received 59 submissions, from which the 26 long papers and 23 short papers selected for presentation at the conference by the 62 experts who make up the committee are included here. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a central topic in contemporary computer science; one which has enabled many groundbreaking developments that have significantly influenced our society. Argumentation has traditionally been studied across a number of fields, notably philosophy, cognitive science, linguistics and jurisprudence. The study of computational models of argumentation is a more recent endeavor, bringing together researchers from traditional fields and computer science and engineering within a rich, interdisciplinary matrix. Computational models of argumentation have been identified and used since the 1980s, and more recently an important role for argumentation in leading to principled decisions has emerged in several settings. In recent years, interest within the research community and the legal industry regarding technological advances in legal knowledge representation and processing has been growing. This relates to areas such as computational models of legal reasoning, cybersecurity, privacy, trust and blockchain methods, among other things. This book presents the proceedings of JURIX 2022, the 35th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems, held from 14 –16 December in Saarbrücken, Germany, under the auspices of the Dutch Foundation for Legal Knowledge Based Systems and hosted by Saarland University. The annual JURIX conference has become an international forum for academics and professionals to exchange knowledge and experiences at the intersection of law and artificial intelligence (AI). For this edition, 62 submissions were received from 163 authors in 24 countries. Following a rigorous review process, carried out by a programme committee of 72 experts recognised in the field, 14 submissions were selected for publication as long papers, 22 as short papers and 5 as demo papers, making a total of 41 papers altogether and representing a 22.5% acceptance rate for long papers (66.1% overall). The broad array of topics covered includes argumentation and legal reasoning, legal ontologies and the semantic web, machine and deep learning and natural language processing for legal knowledge extraction, as well as argument mining, translation of legal texts, defeasible logic, legal compliance, explainable AI, alternative dispute resolution, legal drafting and smart contracts. Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS) is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications, a non-profit organization promoting interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science. It is data that guides the path of applications, and Big Data technologies are enabling new paths which can deal with information in a reasonable time to arrive at an approximate solution, rather than a more exact result in an unacceptably long time. Traditionally concerned with computational models of legal reasoning and the analysis of legal data, the field of legal knowledge and information systems has seen increasing interest in the application of data analytics and machine learning tools to legal tasks in recent years. This book presents the proceedings of the 34th annual JURIX conference, which, due to pandemic restrictions, was hosted online in a virtual format from 8 – 10 December 2021 in Vilnius, Lithuania. Since its inception as a mainly Dutch event, the JURIX conference has become truly international and now, as a platform for the exchange of knowledge between theoretical research and applications, attracts academics, legal practitioners, software companies, governmental agencies and judiciary from around the world. The subject of social robotics has enormous projected economic significance. However, social robots not only present us with novel opportunities but also with novel risks that go far beyond safety issues. It is a potentially highly disruptive technology which could negatively affect the most valuable parts of the fabric of human social interactions in irreparable ways. Since engineering educations do not yet offer the necessary competences to analyze, holistically assess, and constructively mitigate these risks, new alliances must be established between engineering and SSH disciplines, with special emphasis on the humanities (i.e. disciplines specializing in the analysis of socio-cultural interactions and human experience). The Robophilosophy Conference Series was established in 2014 with the purpose of creating a new forum and catalyzing the research discussion in this important area of applied humanities research, with focus on robophilosophy. Robophilosophy conferences have been the world's largest venues for humanities research in and on social robotics. The book at hand presents the proceedings of Robophilosophy Conference 2020: Culturally Sustainable Social Robotics, the fourth event in the international, biennial Robophilosophy Conference Series, which brought together close to 400 participants from 29 countries. A total of 85 submissions by 255 authors from 28 countries were received for the conference, and after a rigorous review process, 20 were selected for publication as full papers, 14 as short papers, and 5 as demo papers. This selection process resulted in a total acceptance rate of 40% (full and short papers) and a competitive 23.5% acceptance rate for full papers. Topics span from computational models of legal argumentation, case-based reasoning, legal ontologies, smart contracts, privacy management and evidential reasoning to information extraction from different types of text in legal documents, and ethical dilemmas. FOIS is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications, a non-profit organization which promotes interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science, as well as in the applications of ontological analysis to conceptual modeling, knowledge engineering, knowledge management, information-systems development, library and information science, scientific research, and semantic technologies in general. The SoMeT conferences bring together researchers and practitioners to share their original research results and experience of practical developments in software science and related new technologies, and this book explores new trends and theories that highlight the direction and development of intelligent software methodologies, tools and techniques. It covers newly developed techniques, enhanced methodologies, software related solutions and recently developed tools, as well as indicating the direction of future research, and the 40 revised papers included here have been selected by the SoMeT20 international reviewing committee on the basis of technical soundness, relevance, originality, significance, and clarity. The investigation of computational models of argument is a rich and fascinating interdisciplinary research field with two ultimate aims: the theoretical goal of understanding argumentation as a cognitive phenomenon by modeling it in computer programs, and the practical goal of supporting the development of computer-based systems able to engage in argumentation-related activities with human users or among themselves. The biennial International Conferences on Computational Models of Argument (COMMA) provide a dedicated forum for the presentation and discussion of the latest advancements in the field, and cover both basic research and innovative applications. This book presents the proceedings of COMMA 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, COMMA 2020 was held as an online event on the originally scheduled dates of 8 -11 September 2020, organised by the University of Perugia, Italy. The book includes 28 full papers and 13 short papers selected from a total of 78 submissions, the abstracts of 3 invited talks and 13 demonstration abstracts. The interdisciplinary nature of the field is reflected, and contributions cover both theory and practice. Theoretical contributions include new formal models, the study of formal or computational properties of models, designs for implemented systems and experimental research. Practical papers include applications to medicine, law and criminal investigation, chatbots and online product reviews. The argument-mining trend from previous COMMA's is continued, while an emerging trend this year is the use of argumentation for explainable AI. The book provided an overview of the latest work on computational models of argument, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Human language technology is the study of the methods by which computer programs or electronic devices can analyze, produce, modify or respond to human texts and speech. It consists of natural language processing and computational linguistics on the one hand, and speech technology on the other. This book presents the proceedings of the 9th International Conference, Human Language Technologies – The Baltic Perspective (Baltic HLT 2020), organised in Kaunas, Lithuania on 22 and 23 September 2020. This biennial conference offers researchers a platform to share knowledge on recent advances in human language processing for the Baltic languages, as well as promoting interdisciplinary and international cooperation in human language-technology research within and beyond the Baltic States. In addition to the traditional topics of natural language processing and language technologies, this year's conference featured a special session on resource and tool development for teaching and learning the less resourced Baltic languages. This year, 42 submissions were received, each of which was evaluated by two reviewers, resulting in a total of 34 papers being accepted for presentation and publication. The book is divided into four sections: speech and text analysis (9 papers); machine translation and natural understanding (6 papers); tools and resources (14 papers); and language learning resources (5 papers). Providing a fascinating overview of current research in the field from a primarily Baltic perspective, the book will be of interest to all those whose work involves human language technology.

This book presents the proceedings of the 24th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2020), held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, from 29 August to 8 September 2020. The conference was postponed from June, and much of it conducted online due to the COVID-19 restrictions. The conference is one of the principal occasions for researchers and practitioners of AI to meet and discuss the latest trends and challenges in all fields of AI and to demonstrate innovative applications and uses of advanced AI technology. The book also includes the proceedings of the 10th Conference on Prestigious Applications of Artificial Intelligence (PAIS 2020) held at the same time. A record number of more than 1,700 submissions was received for ECAI 2020, of which 1,443 were reviewed. Of these, 361 full-papers and 36 highlight papers were accepted (an acceptance rate of 25% for full-papers and 45% for highlight papers). Information modeling and knowledge bases have become an important area of academic and industry research in the 21st century, addressing complexities of modeling that reach beyond the traditional borders of information systems and academic computer science research. This book presents 32 reviewed, selected and updated papers delivered at the 29th International Conference on Information Modeling and Knowledge Bases (EJC2019), held in Lappeenranta, Finland, from 3 to 7 June 2019. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming an inescapable part of modern life, and the fact that AI technologies and applications will inevitably bring about significant changes in many industries and economies worldwide means that this field of research is currently attracting great interest. This book presents the proceedings of ICAITA 2023, the 5th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Technologies and Applications, held as a hybrid event from 30 June to 2 July 2023 in Changchun, China. FOIS is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications, a non-profit organization which promotes interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science. This book presents the papers delivered at FOIS 2023, the 13th edition of the Formal Ontology in Information Systems conference. The event was held as a sequentially-hybrid event, face-to-face in Sherbrooke, Canada, from 17 to 20 July 2023, and online from 18 to 20 September 2023. In total, 62 articles from 19 different countries were submitted, out of which 25 were accepted for inclusion in the conference and for publication; corresponding to an acceptance rate of 40 percent. The contributions are separated into the book's three sections: (1) Foundational ontological issues; (2) Methodological issues around the development, alignment, verification and use of ontologies; and (3) Domain ontologies and ontology-based applications. In these sections, ontological aspects from a wide variety of fields are covered, primarily from various engineering domains including cybersecurity, manufacturing, petroleum engineering, and robotics, but also extending to the humanities, social sciences, medicine, and dentistry. A noticeable trend among the contributions in this edition of the conference is the recognition that improving the tools to analyze, align, and improve ontologies is of paramount importance in continuing to advance the field of formal ontology. The book will be of interest to all formal and applied ontology researchers, and to those who use formal ontologies and information systems as part of their work.
