The article discusses the study showing the initial observations of dyadic interaction between the caller and the worker of a Crisis Intervention Center. A system of categories was designed to analyze the caller-worker interaction. Results show that the major focus of the worker is on gathering demographic data for assessment, while the caller's strategies are pleading and demonstrating helplessness. It was determined that the traditional concept of suicidology fails to provide insight into the immediate problem that the telephone worker faces in each suicidal call. Moreover, the author suggests that crisis intervention may not be the optimal answer to the individual needs of each suicidal caller.
