In the closing chapter of the book, Bernholz develops a formal, mathematical model of totalitarianism based on a paper he had previously published in I Public Choice i (Bernholz [1]). This paper examines the public, private and political in the work of Adriana Cavarero by drawing upon the situations of two women whose lives feature in her work: Elizabeth I and Penelope. It includes an analysis of the way in which Cavarero is rethinking Hannah Arendt's view of ‘the political.’ Cavarero's exposition of the metaphor of the King's two bodies in the common law is explored, along with her critique of hylomorphism. Finally, it extends her work in Stately Bodies by considering different images of the power of the body in later political discourses regarding the worker's body and the effect of the advance of techno-science. This book studies the relationship between religion and a country's economic and political development. The book provides new insights into my field by linking religion to state activity and comparing the effects of different religions. The book taught me a lot about Eastern Orthodoxy, especially how it differs from other religions, and I gained a better understanding of how religion affects political and economic development in formerly socialist countries. I have actively participated in the Swiss direct democracy, voting, whenever I could, on all sorts of issues and taking part in elections - if abroad, by mail - and the monetary system fascinates me like every other economist, but my education in the matter was Post-keynesian. The Introduction is important, because it defends the unusual project of improving the modern monetary system by seeking inspiration from a comparison with the economy of ancient Athens. The criminal law raises wonderfully thorny foundational questions. Some of these questions are conceptual: What is a plausible conception of crime? What is a plausible conception of criminal law? Some of these questions are genealogical: What are the historical and genealogical roots of the criminal law in a particular jurisdiction? Other questions are evaluative: What are the political and moral values on which a given conception of criminal law depends? What kind of rational reconstruction, if any, could the criminal law be given? And, finally, still other questions are exploratory and normative: Should parts of existing criminal law be abandoned? What new topics in criminal law theory need to be addressed in our globalised, technologically savvy world? The contributors to Antony Duff and Stuart P. Green's collection Philosophical Foundations of Criminal Law tackle these questions with zeal and independent spirit. They disagree markedly with each other about what the foundational questions are. And, they disagree about how those questions should be handled. This article charts their disagreements by situating the contributors within two taxonomies. The first groups them according to their approaches to the foundational questions; the second groups them according to their modes of theorising.
