This paper provides an assessment of a 24 GHz multiple-input multiple-output radar as a remote sensing tool to retrieve bathymetric maps in coastal areas. The reconstruction procedure considered here exploits the dispersion relation and has been previously employed to elaborate the data acquired via X-band marine radar. The estimation capabilities of the sensor are investigated firstly on synthetic radar data. With this aim, case studies referring to sea waves interacting with a constant and a spatially varying bathymetry are both considered. Finally, the reconstruction procedure is tested by processing real data recorded at Bagnoli Bay, Naples, South Italy. The construction of tunnels in urban areas can affect the nearby existing infrastructures and buildings, as shallow excavations induce movements up to the ground surface. An important parameter to be monitored during the excavation is the volume loss, which plays a crucial role in determining the ground movements at the surface. InSAR satellite monitoring has the potential to detect ground movements at the millimetric scale on a vast area for tunneling applications. In the present study, the Multi-Temporal InSAR (MT-InSAR) technique, based on the persistent scattering method, is used to retrieve vertical displacements induced by the excavation of twin tunnels of a metro line in the City of Naples (Italy). Here, the volume loss is obtained by fitting a Gaussian curve on the monitored settlement data induced by the excavation of the first tunnel. The latter is then used to predict the settlement of the second excavation about one year later and compared to the MT-InSAR data. These monitored data show the typical shape of the settlement profile, confirming the empirical Gaussian distribution and MT-InSAR capability to detect millimetric displacements. Phlegraean Fields is a large, active caldera located in the densely populated westernmost sector of Naples's Bay (Southern Italy). Several Bouguer anomaly surveys are available for this area with different resolution and accuracy; gravity data derive from the integration of stations placed below and above the sea level as the caldera develops both onshore and offshore. The comparison of these maps with the Digital Elevation Model shows a still remaining Terrain Effect hiding the shallower and deep caldera structure's signal. This effect has an impact on the modelling of the gravity source's depth and geometry. In this research, we apply a geologically constrained terrain correction method to the higher resolution Free Air dataset available for the study area to enhance the complete Bouguer reduction. The correlation analysis between the residual and the topography allows us to assess the quality of the outcomes. The results represent an improvement in the anomalies' isolation and clearly show a continuous circular-like clustering of maxima related to the geometry of the caldera rim. The minima are associated with volcano-tectonic depression filled with pyroclastic and sediment. Furthermore, features alignments overlap the fault systems, along which the volcanic activity occurred. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
