This paper aims to solve the limitations of traditional gravity physical property inversion methods such as insufficient depth resolution and difficulties in parameter selection, by proposing an improved 3D gravity inversion method based on deep learning. The deep learning network model is established using the fully convolutional U-net network. To enhance the generalization ability of the sample set, the large-scale training set and test set are generated by the random walk, based on the forward theory. Founded on the traditional loss function's definition, this paper introduces an improvement incorporating a physical constraint to measure the degree of data fitting between the predicted and the real gravity data. This improvement significantly boosted the accuracy of the deep learning inversion method, as verified through both a single model and an intricate combination model. Finally, we applied this improved inversion method to the gravity data from the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains in the interior of East Antarctica, obtaining a comprehensive 3D crustal density structure. The thickness of the Antarctic ice sheet is a crucial parameter for inferring glacier mass and its evolution process. In the literature, the gravity method has been proven to be one of the effective means for estimating ice sheet thickness. And it is a preferred approach when direct measurements are not available. However, few gravity inversion methods are valid in rugged terrain areas with undulating observation surfaces (UOSs). To solve this problem, this paper proposes an improved high-precision 3D density interface inversion method considering terrain and UOSs simultaneously. The proposed method utilizes airborne gravity data at their flight altitudes, instead of the continued data yield from the unstable downward continuation procedure. In addition, based on the undulating right rectangular prism model, the large reliefs of the terrain are included in the iterative inversion. Antarctica is of great importance in terms of global warming, the sustainability of resources, and the conservation of biodiversity. However, due to 99.66% of the continent being covered in ice and snow, geological research and geoscientific study in Antarctica face huge challenges. Geophysical surveys play a crucial role in enhancing comprehension of the fundamental structure of Antarctica. This study used bibliometric analysis to analyze citation data retrieved from the Web of Science for the period from 1982 to 2022 with geophysical research on Antarctica as the topic. According to the analysis results, the amount of Antarctic geophysical research has been steadily growing over the past four decades as related research countries/regions have become increasingly invested in issues pertaining to global warming and sustainability, and international cooperation is in sight. Moreover, based on keyword clustering and an analysis of highly cited papers, six popular research topics have been identified: Antarctic ice sheet instability and sea level change, Southern Ocean and Sea Ice, tectonic activity of the West Antarctic rift system, the paleocontinental rift and reorganization, magmatism and volcanism, and subglacial lakes and subglacial hydrology. This paper provides a detailed overview of these popular research topics and discusses the applications and advantages of the geophysical methods used in each field. Finally, based on keywords regarding abrupt changes, we identify and examine the thematic evolution of the nexus over three consecutive sub-periods (i.e., 1990–1995, 1996–2005, and 2006–2022). The relevance of using geophysics to support numerous and diverse scientific activities in Antarctica becomes very clear after analyzing this set of scientific publications, as is the importance of using multiple geophysical methods (satellite, airborne, surface, and borehole technology) to revolutionize the acquisition of new data in greater detail from inaccessible or hard-to-reach areas. Many of the advances that they have enabled be seen in the Antarctic terrestrial areas (detailed mapping of the geological structures of West and East Antarctica), ice, and snow (tracking glaciers and sea ice, along with the depth and features of ice sheets). These valuable results help identify potential future research opportunities in the field of Antarctic geophysical research and aid academic professionals in keeping up with recent advances. Remote sensing is a very powerful tool that has been used to identify, map and monitor Antarctic features and processes for nearly one century. Satellite remote sensing plays the main role for about the last five decades, as it is the only way to provide multitemporal views at continental scale. But the emergence of small consumer-grade unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the past two decades has paved the way for data in unprecedented detail. This has been also verified by an increasing noticeable interest in Antarctica by the incorporation of UAVs in the field activities in diversified research topics. This paper presents a comprehensive review about the use of UAVs in scientific activities in Antarctica. It is based on the analysis of 190 scientific publications published in peer-reviewed journals and proceedings of conferences which are organised into six main application topics: Terrestrial, Ice and Snow, Fauna, Technology, Atmosphere and Others. The analysis encompasses a detailed overview of the activities, identifying advantages and difficulties, also evaluating future possibilities and challenges for expanding the use of UAV in the field activities. The relevance of using UAVs to support numerous and diverse scientific activities in Antarctica becomes very clear after analysing this set of scientific publications, as it is revolutionising the remote acquisition of new data with much higher detail, from inaccessible or difficult to access regions, in faster and cheaper ways. Many of the advances can be seen in the terrestrial areas (detailed 3D mapping; vegetation mapping, discrimination and health assessment; periglacial forms characterisation), ice and snow (more detailed topography, depth and features of ice-sheets, glaciers and sea-ice), fauna (counting penguins, seals and flying birds and detailed morphometrics) and in atmosphere studies (more detailed meteorological measurements and air-surface couplings). This review has also shown that despite the low environmental impact of UAV-based surveys, the increasing number of applications and use, may lead to impacts in the most sensitive Antarctic ecosystems. Hence, we call for an internationally coordinated effort to for planning and sharing UAV data in Antarctica, which would reduce environmental impacts, while extending research outcomes. This is one of the first papers to study the ionospheric effects of two solar eclipses that occurred in South America and Antarctica under geomagnetic activity in different seasons (summer and autumn) and their impact on the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA). The changes in total electron content (TEC) during the 15 February 2018 and 30 April 2022 partial solar eclipses will be analyzed. The study is based on more than 390 GPS stations, Swarm-A, and DMSP F18 satellite measurements, such as TEC, electron density, and electron temperature. The ionospheric behaviors over the two-fifth days on both sides of each eclipse were used as a reference for estimating TEC changes. Regional TEC maps were created for the analysis. Background TEC levels were significantly higher during the 2022 eclipse than during the 2018 eclipse because ionospheric levels depend on solar index parameters. On the days of the 2018 and 2022 eclipses, the ionospheric enhancement was noticeable due to levels of geomagnetic activity. Although geomagnetic forcing impacted the ionosphere, both eclipses had evident depletions under the penumbra, wherein differential vertical TEC (DVTEC) reached values <−40%. The duration of the ionospheric effects persisted after 24 UT. Also, while a noticeable TEC depletion (DVTEC ∼−50%) of the southern EIA crest was observed during the 2018 eclipse (hemisphere summer), an evident TEC enhancement (DVTEC > 30%) at the same crest was seen during the eclipse of 2022 (hemisphere autumn). Antarctic mapping with satellite images is an important basic task for polar environmental monitoring. Since the first Chinese marine satellite was launched in 2002, China has formed three series of more than 10 marine satellites in orbit. As global operational monitoring satellites of ocean color series, HY-1C and HY-1D have good coverage characteristics and imaging performance in polar regions, and they provide an effective tool for Antarctic monitoring and mapping. In this paper, Antarctic images acquired by the HY-1 satellite Coastal Zone Imager (CZI) sensor were used to study color matching in the mosaic process. According to the CZI characteristics for Antarctic imaging, experiments were carried out on the illuminance nonuniformity of a single image and color registration of multiple images. A gray-level segmentation color-matching method is proposed to solve the problem of image overstretching in the Antarctic image color-matching process. The results and statistical analysis show that the proposed method can effectively eliminate the color deviation between HY-1 Antarctic images, and the mosaic results have a good effect. The paper presents the first retrievals of clean snow properties using spaceborne hyperspectral observations via the Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP). The location close to the Concordia station at the Dome C Plateau (Antarctica) was selected. At this location, the atmospheric effects (except molecular light scattering and absorption) are weak, and the simplified atmospheric correction scheme could be applied. The ice grain size, snow specific surface area, and snow spectral and broadband albedos were retrieved using single-view EnMAP measurements. In addition, we propose a technique to retrieve trace gas concentrations (e.g., water vapor and ozone) from EnMAP observations over the snow surfaces. As the largest species of birds in Antarctica, penguins are called "biological indicators". Changes in the environment will cause population fluctuations. Therefore, developing a penguin census regularly will not only help carry out conservation activities but also provides a basis for studying climate change. Traditionally, scholars often use indirect methods, e.g., identifying penguin guano and establishing regression relationships to estimate the size of penguin colonies. In this paper, we explore the feasibility of automatic object detection algorithms based on aerial images, which locate each penguin directly. We build a dataset consisting of images taken at 400 m altitude over the island populated by Adelie penguins, which are cropped with a resolution of 640 × 640. To address the challenges of detecting minuscule penguins (often 10 pixels extent) amidst complex backgrounds in our dataset, we propose a new object detection network, named YoloPd (Yolo for penguin detection). Specifically, a multiple frequency features fusion module and a Bottleneck aggregation layer are proposed to strengthen feature representations for smaller penguins. Furthermore, the Transformer aggregation layer and efficient attention module are designed to capture global features with the aim of filtering out background interference. With respect to the latency/accuracy trade-off, YoloPd surpasses the classical detector Faster R-CNN by 8.5% in mean precision (mAP). It also beats the latest detector Yolov7 by 2.3% in F1 score with fewer parameters. Under YoloPd, the average counting accuracy reaches 94.6%, which is quite promising. The snow temperature above the ice sheet is one of the basic characteristic parameters of the ice sheet, which plays an important role in the study of the global climate. Because infrared and microwaves with different frequencies have different penetration depths in snow, it is possible to retrieve the snow temperature profiles by combining microwave and infrared brightness temperatures. This paper proposes a conjoint inversion algorithm to retrieve snow temperature profiles by combining multi-frequency microwave brightness temperature (BT) with infrared BT, in which different weight functions of microwave BT at different frequencies are adopted, and the atmosphere influence has also been corrected. The snow temperature profile data are retrieved based on AMSR2 microwave BT data and MODIS infrared BT data in 2017 and 2018, which are evaluated by comparing with the measured snow temperature at Dome-C station. The results confirm that the inverted snow temperature profiles are consistent with the field observation data from the Dome-C station. Multi-frequency microwave brightness temperature can be used to invert the snow temperature profiles; however, the inverted snow surface temperature is more accurate by combining the infrared BT with the microwave BT in the conjoint inversion algorithm. The analytical solutions of the radiative transfer equation are needed for the solution of various applied atmospheric and snow optics problems. In this paper, we propose a simple analytical equation for the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) spectral reflectance. To simplify the problem under study we consider the case of Antarctica, where both snow and atmosphere are almost free of pollutants. This work is focused on the simulation of the moderate spectral resolution TOA measurements (1 nm or so) and the spectral range 400–1000 nm. The values of the coefficient of variance (CV) between the measured by the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) on board Sentinel-3A and modelled spectra are smaller than 10% for most cases in Antarctica. There are regions in Eastern Antarctica, where the values of CV are smaller than 5%. The areas with larger deviations between measured and retrieved spectra could be due to the presence of clouds or structures on the snow surface not captured by the proposed model. Understanding englacial and subglacial structures is a fundamental method of inferring ice sheets' historical evolution and surface mass balance. The internal layer continuity index and the basal roughness are key parameters and indicators for the speculation of the relationship between the ice sheet's internal structure or bottom and ice flow. Several methods have been proposed in the past two decades to quantitatively calculate the continuity index of ice layer geometry and the roughness of the ice–bedrock interface based on radar echo signals. These methods are mainly based on the average of the absolute value of the vertical gradient of the echo signal amplitude and the standard deviation of the horizontal fluctuation of the bedrock interface. However, these methods are limited by the amount and quality of unprocessed radar datasets and have not been widely used, which also hinders further research, such as the analysis of the englacial reflectivity, the subglacial conditions, and the history of the ice sheets. In this paper, based on geophysical processing methods for radar image denoising and deep learning for ice layer and bedrock interface extraction, we propose a new method for calculating the layer continuity index and basal roughness. Using this method, we demonstrate the ice-penetrating radar data processing and compare the imaging and calculation of the radar profiles from Dome A to Zhongshan Station, East Antarctica. We removed the noise from the processed radar data, extracted ice layer continuity features, and used other techniques to verify the calculation. The potential application of this method in the future is illustrated by several examples. We believe that this method can become an effective approach for future Antarctic geophysical and glaciological research and for obtaining more information about the history and dynamics of ice sheets from their radar-extracted internal structure. Antarctic basal water storage variation (BWSV) refers to mass changes of basal water beneath the Antarctic ice sheet (AIS). Identifying these variations is critical for understanding Antarctic basal hydrology variations and basal heat conduction, yet they are rarely accessible due to a lack of direct observation. This paper proposes a layered gravity density forward/inversion iteration method to investigate Antarctic BWSV based on multi-source satellite observations and relevant models. During 2003–2009, BWSV increased at an average rate of 43 ± 23 Gt/yr, which accounts for 29% of the previously documented total mass loss rate (−76 ± 20 Gt/yr) of AIS. Major uncertainty arises from satellite gravimetry, satellite altimetry, the glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) model, and the modelled basal melting rate. We find that increases in basal water mainly occurred in regions with widespread active subglacial lakes, such as the Rockefeller Plateau, Siple Coast, Institute Ice Stream regions, and marginal regions of East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS), which indicates the increased water storage in these active subglacial lakes, despite the frequent water drainage events. The Amundsen Sea coast experienced a significant loss during the same period, which is attributed to the basal meltwater discharging into the Amundsen Sea through basal channels. Recent studies have demonstrated that wideband microwave radiometers provide significant potential for profiling important subsurface polar firn characteristics necessary to understand the dynamics of the cryosphere and predict future changes in ice and snow coverage. Different frequencies within the wide spectra of radiometers result in different electromagnetic propagation losses and thus reveal characteristics at different depths in ice and snow. This paper, expanding on those investigations, explores the utilization of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) constellation as a single wideband (6.93 GHz–91.655 GHz) spaceborne radiometer, covering the entire microwave spectrum from C-band to W-band, to profile subsurface properties of the Antarctic firn. Results of the initial analyses over Concordia and Vostok Stations in Antarctica indicate that GPM brightness temperature measurements provide critical information regarding the subsurface temperatures and physical properties of the firn from the surface down to several meters of depth. Considering the high spatiotemporal coverage of polar-orbiting spaceborne radiometers, these results are promising for future continent-level thermal and physical characterization of the Antarctic firn. Antarctica is covered by a thick ice sheet, and the application of geophysical methods is necessary to image the subglacial structures for studying the hydrologic systems and tectonic deformations in the Antarctic continent. The magnetotelluric (MT) method is one of the best approaches to obtain the subglacial electrical resistivities. However, only a very small volume of data has been collected so far in Antarctica using this method. In this paper, we report on a broadband MT profile collected at 10 sites in the south of the Chinese Zhongshan Station at Prydz Bay, and a 3D resistivity model was constructed by inversion of these data. This 3D model shows two low resistivity zones at a depth shallower than 6 km. They are consistent with the low-velocity zones in the previous shear-wave model and can be interpreted as the result of interconnected fluids associated with a downward migration of subglacial water. In addition, a distinct eastward dipping low resistivity zoneis present in the crust, which extends from the top surface to the lower crust. Since its location coincides with the highly positive magnetization named Amery Lineament, it is proposed that this eastward dipping low resistivity zoneextending in the entire crust probably reveals the geometry structure of the Amery Lineament at depth. Besides, it can be inferred from this new 3D resistivity model that the Amery Lineament is at least a crustal-scale structure, which probably outcrops on the land surface but was covered by the ice sheets in the study area. Measurements of Very-Low-Frequency (VLF) transmitter signals have been widely used to investigate the effects of various space weather events on the D-region ionosphere, including nowcasting solar flares. Previous studies have established a method to nowcast solar flares using VLF measurements, but only using measurements from dayside propagation paths, and there remains limited focus on day–night mixed paths, which are important for method applicability. Between March and May of 2022, the Sun erupted a total of 56 M-class and 6 X-class solar flares, all of which were well captured by our VLF receiver in Antarctica. Using these VLF measurements, we reexamine the capability of the VLF technique to nowcast solar flares by including day–night mixed propagation paths and expanding the path coverage in longitude compared to that in previous studies. The amplitude and phase maximum changes are generally positively correlated with X-ray fluxes, whereas the time delay is negatively correlated. The curve-fitting parameters that we obtain for the X-ray fluxes and VLF signal maximum changes are consistent with those in previous studies for dayside paths, even though different instruments are used, supporting the flare-nowcasting method. Moreover, the present results show that, for day–night mixed paths, the amplitude and phase maximum changes also scale linearly with the logarithm of the flare X-ray fluxes, but the level of change is notably different from that for dayside paths. Byers Peninsula is considered one of the largest ice-free areas in maritime Antarctica. Since 2006, the Spanish Polar Program has taken part in a large number of environmental studies involving the effects of climate change on biological life cycles, limnology, and microbiology. Soils from maritime Antarctica are generally weakly developed and have chemical, physical, and morphological characteristics that are strongly influenced by the parent material. However, biological activity during the short Antarctic summer promotes intense transference of nutrients and organic matter in areas occupied by different species of birds and marine mammals. Mapping and monitoring those areas that are highly occupied by various species could be very useful to create models prepared from satellite images of the edaphic properties. In this approach, deep learning and linear regression models of the soil properties and spectral indexes, which were considered as explicative variables, were used. We trained the models on soil properties closely related to biological activity such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the iron fraction associated with the organic matter (Fe). We tested the best approach to model the spatial distribution of DOC, Fe, and pH by training the linear regression and deep learning models on Sentinel-2 and WorldView-2 images. The most robust models, the pH model built with the deep learning approach on Sentinel images (MAE of 0.51, RMSE of 0.70, and R2 with a residual of −0.49), the DOC model built with linear regression on Sentinel images (MAE of 189.39, RMSE of 342.23, and R2 with a residual of 0.0), and the organic Fe model built with deep learning (MAE of 116.20, RMSE of 209.93, and R2 of −0.05), were used to track possible areas with ornithogenic soils, as well as areas of Byers Peninsula that could be supporting the highest biological development. Temperature analysis is of special interest in polar areas because temperature is an essential variable in the energy exchange between the Earth's surface and atmosphere. Although land surface temperature (LST) obtained using satellites and air temperature (Ta) have different physical meanings and are measured with different techniques, LST has often been successfully employed to estimate Ta. For this reason, in this work, we estimated Ta from LST MODIS collection 6 (C6) and used other predictor variables. Daily mean Ta was calculated from Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) stations data on the Livingston and Deception Islands, and from the PERMASNOW project stations on Livingston Island; both islands being part of the South Shetland Islands (SSI) archipelago. In relation to our previous work carried out in the study area with collection 5 (C5) data, we obtained higher R2 values (R2CV = 0.8, in the unique model with Terra daytime data) and lower errors (RMSECV = 2.2 °C, MAECV = 1.6 °C). We corroborated significant improvements in MODIS C6 LST data. We analyzed emissivity as a possible factor of discrepancies between C5 and C6, but we did not find conclusive results, therefore we could not affirm that emissivity is the factor that causes differences between one collection and another. The results obtained with the applied filters indicated that MODIS data can be used to study Ta in the area, as these filters contribute to the reduction of uncertainties in the modeling of Ta from satellites. In this work, we develop a software suite for studies of atmosphere–underlying SNOW-spaceborne optical receiver light TRANsmission calculations (SNOWTRAN) with applications for the solution of forward and inverse radiative transfer problems in polar regions. Assuming that the aerosol load is extremely low, the proposed theory does not require the numerical procedures for the solution of the radiative transfer equation and is based on analytical equations for the spectral nadir reflectance and simple approximations for the local optical properties of atmosphere and snow. The developed model is validated using EnMAP and PRISMA spaceborne imaging spectroscopy data close to the Concordia research station in Antarctica. A new, fast technique for the determination of the snow grain size and assessment of the snowpack vertical inhomogeneity is then proposed and further demonstrated on EnMAP imagery over the Aviator Glacier and in the vicinity of the Concordia research station in Antarctica. The results revealed a large increase in precipitable water vapor at the Concordia research station in February 2023 that was linked to a warming event and a four times larger grain size at Aviator Glacier compared with Dome C. We conducted a comparison of sea ice concentration (SIC) in the Amundsen Sea using three satellite datasets: Hadley Centre's sea ice and sea surface temperature (HadISST1), Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Ice Analysis (OSTIA), and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2). HadISST1 has the longest time period, while AMSR2 has the shortest. In terms of grid resolution, HadISST1 has the coarsest resolution, while AMSR2 has the finest. The sea ice areas (SIAs) observed in HadISST1, OSTIA, and AMSR2 are similar. We studied the decadal variations in SICs by dividing the study period into four temporal segments. We investigated the differences between HadISST1 and OSTIA for each temporal segment. HadISST1 exhibited a more pronounced positive trend compared to OSTIA between 2005 and 2010. Additionally, we compared the interannual and seasonal variations in SICs between HadISST1 and OSTIA. Lastly, it should be noted that the Amundsen Sea polynya area varies across all three datasets. Mapping Antarctic Specially Protected Areas (ASPAs) remains a critical yet challenging task, especially in extreme environments like Antarctica. Traditional methods are often cumbersome, expensive, and risky, with limited satellite data further hindering accuracy. This study addresses these challenges by developing a workflow that enables precise mapping and monitoring of vegetation in ASPAs. The processing pipeline of this workflow integrates small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)—or drones—to collect hyperspectral and multispectral imagery (HSI and MSI), global navigation satellite system (GNSS) enhanced with real-time kinematics (RTK) to collect ground control points (GCPs), and supervised machine learning classifiers. This workflow was validated in the field by acquiring ground and aerial data at ASPA 135, Windmill Islands, East Antarctica. The data preparation phase involves a data fusion technique to integrate HSI and MSI data, achieving the collection of georeferenced HSI scans with a resolution of up to 0.3 cm/pixel. From these high-resolution HSI scans, a series of novel spectral indices were proposed to enhance the classification accuracy of the model. Model training was achieved using extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), with four different combinations tested to identify the best fit for the data. The research results indicate the successful detection and mapping of moss and lichens, with an average accuracy of 95%. Optimised XGBoost models, particularly Model 3 and Model 4, demonstrate the applicability of the custom spectral indices to achieve high accuracy with reduced computing power requirements. The integration of these technologies results in significantly more accurate mapping compared to conventional methods. This workflow serves as a foundational step towards more extensive remote sensing applications in Antarctic and ASPA vegetation mapping, as well as in monitoring the impact of climate change on the Antarctic ecosystem. The characteristics of sea ice leads (SILs) in the Weddell Sea are an important basis for understanding the mechanism of the atmosphere–ocean system in the Southern Ocean. In this study, we derived the sea ice surface temperature (IST) of the Weddell Sea from MODIS thermal images and then generated a daily SIL map for 2015 and 2022 by utilizing the iterative threshold method on the optimised MOD35 cloud-masked IST. The results showed that SIL variations in the Weddell Sea presented remarkable seasonal characteristics. The trend of the SIL area exhibited an initial rise followed by a decline from January to December, characterised by lower values in spring and summer and higher values in fall and winter. SILs in the Weddell Sea were predominantly concentrated between 70~78°S and 60~30°W. The coastal spatial distribution density of the SILs exceeded that of offshore regions, peaking near the Antarctic Peninsula and then near Queen Maud Land. The SIL variation was mainly influenced by dynamical factors, and there were strong positive correlations between the wind field, ocean currents, and sea-ice motion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polar amplification appears in response to greenhouse gas forcing, which has become a focus of climate change research. However, polar amplification has not been systematically investigated over the Earth's three poles (the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Third Pole). An index of polar amplification is employed, and the annual and seasonal variations of land surface temperature over the Earth's three poles are examined using MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) observations for the period 2001–2018. As expected, the warming of the Arctic is most conspicuous, followed by the Third Pole, and is weakest in Antarctica. Compared to the temperature changes for the global land region, positive polar amplification appears in the Arctic and the Third Pole on an annual scale, whereas Antarctic amplification disappears, with a negative amplification index of −0.72. The polar amplification for the Earth's three poles shows seasonal differences. Strong Arctic amplification appears in boreal spring and winter, with a surface warming rate of more than 3.40 times the global mean for land regions. In contrast, the amplification of the Third Pole is most conspicuous in boreal summer. The two poles located in the Northern Hemisphere have the weakest amplification in boreal autumn. Differently from the positive amplification for the Arctic and the Third Pole in all seasons, the faster variations in Antarctic temperature compared to the globe only appear in austral autumn and winter, and the amplification signal is negative in these seasons, with an amplification index of −1.68 and −2.73, respectively. In the austral winter, the strong negative amplification concentrates on West Antarctica and the coast of East Antarctica, with an absolute value of amplification index higher than 5 in general. Generally, the polar amplification is strongest in the Arctic except from June to August, and Antarctic amplification is the weakest among the Earth's three poles. Ice motion is an essential element for accurately evaluating glacier mass balance. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has been widely applied for monitoring ice motion with high precision and wide coverage in the Antarctic. However, the ionospheric effects can significantly impact InSAR-based ice-motion measurements. At low radar frequencies in particular, the ionospheric effects have been regarded as a serious source of noise in L-band SAR data. The split-spectrum method (SSM) is commonly used for correcting the ionospheric effects of the InSAR technique. However, it requires spatial filtering with the relatively large factors used to scale the sub-bands' interferograms, which often results in an unwrapped phase error. In this paper, a reformulation of the split-spectrum method (RSSM) is introduced to correct the ionospheric effects in the Grove Mountains of East Antarctica, which have slow ice flow and frequent ionosphere changes. The results show that RSSM can effectively correct the ionospheric effects of InSAR-based ice-motion measurements. To evaluate the ability of ionospheric correction using RSSM, the result of ionospheric correction derived from SSM is compared with the results of RSSM. In addition, ionosphere-corrected ice motion is also compared with GPS and MEaSUREs. The results show that the ionosphere-corrected ice velocities are in good agreement with GPS observations and MEaSUREs. The average ice velocity from the InSAR time series is compared to that from MEaSUREs, and the average ionosphere-corrected ice velocity error reduces 43.9% in SSM and 51.1% in RSSM, respectively. The ionosphere-corrected ice velocity error is the most significant, reducing 86.9% in SSM and 90.4% in RSSM from 1 November 2007 to 19 December 2007. The results show that the ability of RSSM to correct ionospheric effects is slightly better than that of SSM. Due to rapid global warming, the relationship between the mass loss of the Antarctic ice sheet and rising sea levels are attracting widespread attention. The Lambert–Amery glacial system is the largest drainage system in East Antarctica, and its mass balance has an important influence on the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet. In this paper, the recent ice flux in the Lambert Glacier of the Lambert–Amery system was systematically analyzed based on recently updated remote sensing data. According to Landsat-8 ice velocity data from 2018 to April 2019 and the updated Bedmachine v2 ice thickness dataset in 2021, the contribution of ice flux approximately 140 km downstream from Dome A in the Lambert Glacier area to downstream from the glacier is 8.5 ± 1.9   Gt · a − 1 , and the ice flux in the middle of the convergence region is 18.9 ± 2.9   Gt · a − 1 . The ice mass input into the Amery ice shelf through the grounding line of the whole glacier is 19.9 ± 1.3   Gt · a − 1 . The ice flux output from the mainstream area of the grounding line is 19.3 ± 1.0   Gt · a − 1 . Using the annual SMB data of the regional atmospheric climate model (RACMO v2.3) as the quality input, the mass balance of the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the Lambert Glacier was analyzed. The results show that recent positive accumulation appears in the middle region of the glacier (about 74–78°S, 67–85°E) and the net accumulation of the whole glacier is 2.4 ± 3.5   Gt · a − 1 . Although the mass balance of the Lambert Glacier continues to show a positive accumulation, and the positive value in the region is decreasing compared with values obtained in early 2000. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are becoming an increasingly popular approach for classification mapping of large complex regions where manual data collection is too time consuming. Stream boundaries in hyper-arid polar regions such as the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDVs) in Antarctica are difficult to locate because they have little hydraulic flow throughout the short summer months. This paper utilizes a U-Net CNN to map stream boundaries from lidar derived rasters in Taylor Valley located within the MDVs, covering ∼770 km2. The training dataset consists of 217 (300 × 300 m2) well-distributed tiles of manually classified stream boundaries with diverse geometries (straight, sinuous, meandering, and braided) throughout the valley. The U-Net CNN is trained on elevation, slope, lidar intensity returns, and flow accumulation rasters. These features were used for detection of stream boundaries by providing potential topographic cues such as inflection points at stream boundaries and reflective properties of streams such as linear patterns of wetted soil, water, or ice. Various combinations of these features were analyzed based on performance. The test set performance revealed that elevation and slope had the highest performance of the feature combinations. The test set performance analysis revealed that the CNN model trained with elevation independently received a precision, recall, and F1 score of 0.94 ± 0.05 , 0.95 ± 0.04 , and 0.94 ± 0.04 respectively, while slope received 0.96 ± 0.03 , 0.93 ± 0.04 , and 0.94 ± 0.04 , respectively. The performance of the test set revealed higher stream boundary prediction accuracies along the coast, while inland performance varied. Meandering streams had the highest stream boundary prediction performance on the test set compared to the other stream geometries tested here because meandering streams are further evolved and have more distinguishable breaks in slope, indicating stream boundaries. These methods provide a novel approach for mapping stream boundaries semi-automatically in complex regions such as hyper-arid environments over larger scales than is possible for current methods. The ice shelf is an important component of the Antarctic system, and the interaction between the ice sheet and the ocean often proceeds through mass variations of the ice shelf. The digital elevation model (DEM) of the ice shelf is particularly important for ice shelf elevation change and mass balance estimation. With the development of satellite altimetry technology, it became an important data source for DEM research of Antarctica. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) launched in 2018 is a significant improvement in along-track sampling rate and measurement accuracy compared with previous altimetry satellites. This study uses ordinary kriging interpolation to present new DEMs (ICESat-2 DEM hereinafter) for the three ice shelves (Ross, Filchner–Ronne and Amery) in Antarctica with ICESat-2 altimetry data. Two variogram models (linear and spherical) of ordinary kriging interpolation are compared in this paper. The result shows that the spherical model generally shows better performance and lower standard deviation (STD) than the linear models. The precision of the ultimate DEM was evaluated by NASA Operation IceBridge (OIB) data and compared with five previously published Antarctic DEM products (REMA, TanDEM-X PolarDEM, Slater DEM, Helm DEM, and Bamber DEM). The comparison reveals that the mean difference between ICESat-2 DEM of the Ross ice shelf and OIB is −0.016 m with a STD of 0.918 m, and the mean difference between ICESat-2 DEM of the Filchner–Ronne ice shelf and OIB is −0.533 m with a STD of 0.718 m. With global warming accelerating, polar amplification is one of the hot issues in climate research. However, most studies focus on Arctic amplification, and little attention has been paid to Antarctic amplification (AnA), and there is no relevant research based on MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) land surface temperature observations. Compared with 128 stations' observations, MODIS can capture the variations in temperature over Antarctica. In addition, the temperature changes in Antarctica, East Antarctica, West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula during the period 2001–2018 reflected by the MODIS and ERA5 are basically consistent, and the temperature changes in Antarctica are negatively correlated with the Southern Annular Mode. AnA occurs under all annual and seasonal scales, with an AnA index greater than 1.27 (1.31) from the MODIS (ERA5), and is strongest in the austral winter and weakest in summer. AnA displays regional differences, and the signal from the MODIS is similar to that from ERA5. The strongest amplification occurs in East Antarctica, with an AnA index greater than 1.45 (1.48) from the MODIS (ERA5), followed by West Antarctica, whereas the amplified signal is absent at the Antarctic Peninsula. In addition, seasonal differences can be observed in the sub regions of Antarctica. For West Antarctica, the greatest amplification appears in austral winter, and in austral spring for East Antarctica. The AnA signal also can be captured in daytime and nighttime observations, and the AnA in nighttime observations is stronger than that in daytime. Generally, the MODIS illustrates the appearance of AnA for the period 2001–2018, and the Antarctic climate undergoes drastic changes, and the potential impact should arouse attention. Over the last two decades, spaceborne polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) has been widely used to penetrate sea ice surfaces to achieve fully polarimetric high-resolution imaging at all times of day and in a range of weather conditions. Model-based polarimetric decomposition is a powerful tool used to extract useful physical and geometric information about sea ice from the matrix datasets acquired by PolSAR. The volume scattering of sea ice is usually modeled as the incoherent average of scatterings of a large volume of oriented ellipsoid particles that are uniformly distributed in 3D space. This uniform spatial distribution is often approximated as a uniform orientation distribution (UOD), i.e., the particles are uniformly oriented in all directions. This is achieved in the existing literature by ensuring the canting angle φ and tilt angle τ of particles uniformly distributed in their respective ranges and introducing a factor cos ⁡ τ in the ensemble average. However, we find this implementation of UOD is not always effective, while a real UOD can be realized by distributing the solid angles of particles uniformly in 3D space. By deriving the total solid angle of the canting-tilt cell spanned by particles and combining the differential relationship between solid angle and Euler angles φ and τ , a complete expression of the joint probability density function p φ , τ that can always ensure the uniform orientation of particles of sea ice is realized. By ensemble integrating the coherency matrix of φ , τ -oriented particle with p φ , τ , a generalized modeling of the volume coherency matrix of 3D uniformly oriented spheroid particles is obtained, which covers factors such as radar observation geometry, particle shape, canting geometry, tilt geometry and transmission effect in a multiplicative way. The existing volume scattering models of sea ice constitute special cases. The performance of the model in the characterization of the volume behaviors was investigated via simulations on a volume of oblate and prolate particles with the differential reflectivity Z D R , polarimetric entropy H and scattering α angle as descriptors. Based on the model, several interesting orientation geometries were also studied, including the aligned orientation, complement tilt geometry and reflection symmetry, among which the complement tilt geometry is specifically highlighted. It involves three volume models that correspond to the horizontal tilt, vertical tilt and random tilt of particles within sea ice, respectively. To match the models to PolSAR data for adaptive decomposition, two selection strategies are provided. One is based on Z D R , and the other is based on the maximum power fitting. The scattering power that reduces the rank of coherency matrix by exactly one without violating the physical realizability condition is obtained to make full use of the polarimetric scattering information. Both the models and decomposition were finally validated on the Gaofen-3 PolSAR data of a young ice area in Prydz Bay, Antarctica. The adaptive decomposition result demonstrates not only the dominant vertical tilt preference of brine inclusions within sea ice, but also the subordinate random tilt preference and non-negligible horizontal tilt preference, which are consistent with the geometric selection mechanism that the c-axes of polycrystallines within sea ice would gradually align with depth. The experiment also indicates that, compared to the strategy based on Z D R , the maximum power fitting is preferable because it is entirely driven by the model and data and is independent of any empirical thresholds. Such soft thresholding enables this strategy to adaptively estimate the negative Z D R offset introduced by the transmission effect, which provides a novel inversion of the refractive index of sea ice based on polarimetric model-based decomposition. This study focuses on the development of a time-variable regional geo-potential model for Antarctica using the spherical cap harmonic analysis (SCHA) basis functions. The model is derived from line-of-sight gravity difference (LGD) measurements obtained from the GRACE-Follow-On (GFO) mission. The solution of a Laplace equation for the boundary values over a spherical cap is used to expand the geo-potential coefficients in terms of Legendre functions with a real degree and integer order suitable for regional modelling, which is used to constrain the geo-potential coefficients using LGD measurements. To validate the performance of the SCHA, it is first utilized with LGD data derived from a L2 JPL (Level 2 product of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory). The obtained LGD data are used to compute the local geo-potential model up to Kmax = 20, corresponding to the SH degree and order up to 60. The comparison of the radial gravity on the Earth's surface map across Antarctica with the corresponding radial gravity components of the L2 JPL is carried out using local geo-potential coefficients. The results of this comparison provide evidence that these basis functions for Kmax = 20 are valid across the entirety of Antarctica. Subsequently, the analysis proceeds using LGD data obtained from the Level 1B product of GFO by transforming these LGD data into the SCHA coordinate system and applying them to constrain the SCHA harmonic coefficients up to Kmax = 20. In this case, several independent LGD profiles along the trajectories of the satellites are devised to verify the accuracy of the local model. These LGD profiles are not employed in the inverse problem of determining harmonic coefficients. The results indicate that using regional harmonic basis functions, specifically spherical cap harmonic analysis (SCHA) functions, leads to a close estimation of LGD compared to the L2 JPL. The regional harmonic basis function exhibits a root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.71 × 10−4 mGal. This represents a substantial improvement over the RMSE of the L2 JPL, which is 6.36 × 10−4 mGal. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of local geo-potential coefficients obtained from SCHA is a reliable method for extracting nearly the full gravitational signal within a spherical cap region, after validation of this method. Geological models are essential components in various applications. To generate reliable realizations, the geostatistical method focuses on reproducing spatial structures from training images (TIs). Moreover, uncertainty plays an important role in Earth systems. It is beneficial for creating an ensemble of stochastic realizations with high diversity. In this work, we applied a pattern classification distribution (PCD) method to quantitatively evaluate geostatistical modeling. First, we proposed a correlation-driven template method to capture geological patterns. According to the spatial dependency of the TI, region growing and elbow-point detection were launched to create an adaptive template. Second, a combination of clustering and classification was suggested to characterize geological realizations. Aiming at simplifying parameter specification, the program employed hierarchical clustering and decision tree to categorize geological structures. Third, we designed a stacking framework to develop the multi-grid analysis. The contribution of each grid was calculated based on the morphological characteristics of TI. Our program was extensively examined by a channel model, a 2D nonstationary flume system, 2D subglacial bed topographic models in Antarctica, and 3D sandstone models. We activated various geostatistical programs to produce realizations. A polynya is an area of open water or reduced concentration of sea ice surrounded by either concentrated sea ice or land ice. They are often seen as sites of intense ocean–atmosphere heat exchange and as ice production factories. Given their importance, it is crucial to quantify the accuracy of satellite-derived polynya information. Polynyas in their early evolution phase are generally narrow and occur at scales likely too fine to be detected by widely used passive microwave (PMW) radiometric sensors. We derived 40 m scale polynya information over the western Ross Sea from high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Sentinel-1 C-band data and examined discrepancies with larger-scale estimates. We utilized two automated algorithms, supervised (a rule-based approach) and unsupervised (a combination of texture analysis with k-means clustering), to accurately identify the polynya areas. We generated data for validation using Sentinel-1 data at instances where polynyas can be visually delineated. Results from PMW sensors (NSIDC and AMSR2) and SAR-based algorithms (rule-based and texture-based) are compared with manually delineated polynya areas obtained through Sentinel-1. Analysis using PMW sensors revealed that NSIDC overestimates larger polynyas and underestimates smaller polynyas compared to AMSR2. We were more accurately able to identify polynya presence and area using Sentinel-1 SAR observations, especially in clear cases and cases when PMW data miscalculates the polynya's presence. Of our SAR-based algorithms, the rule-based approach was more accurate than the texture-based approach at identifying clear polynyas when validated against manually delineated regions. The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2), launched in September 2018, has been widely used in forestry and surveying. A high-accuracy digital elevation model (DEM)/digital surface model (DSM) for terrain matching can effectively evaluate the ICESat-2 design requirements and provide essential data support for further study. The conventional terrain-matching methods regard the laser ground track as a whole, ignoring the individual differences caused by the interaction of photons during flight. Therefore, a novel terrain-matching method using a two-dimensional affine transformation model was proposed to describe the deformation of laser tracks. The least-square optimizes the model parameters with the high-accuracy terrain data to obtain the best matching result. The results in McMurdo Dry Valley (MDV), Antarctica, and Zhengzhou (ZZ), China, demonstrate that the proposed method can verify geolocation accuracy and indicate that the average horizontal accuracy of ICESat-2 V5 data is about 3.86 m in MDV and 4.67 m in ZZ. It shows that ICESat-2 has good positioning accuracy, even in mountainous areas with complex terrain. Additionally, the random forest (RF) model was calculated to analyze the influence of four factors on geographic location accuracy. David Glacier and Drygalski Ice Tongue are massive glaciers in Victoria Land, Antarctica. The ice from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet is drained through the former, and then discharged into the western Ross Sea through the latter. David Drygalski is the largest outlet glacier in Northern Victoria Land, floating kilometers out to sea. The floating and grounded part of the David Glacier are the main focus of this article. During the XXI Italian Antarctic Expedition (2005–2006), within the framework of the National Antarctic Research Programme (PNRA), two GNSS stations were installed at different points: the first close to the grounding line of David Glacier, and the second approximately 40 km downstream of the first one. Simultaneous data logging was performed by both GNSS stations for 24 days. In the latest data processing, the kinematic PPP technique was adopted to evaluate the dominant diurnal components and the very small semi-diurnal variations in ice motion induced by the ocean tide and the mean ice flow rates of both GNSS stations. Comparison of the GNSS time series with predicted ocean tide calculated from harmonic coefficients of the nearest tide gauge stations, installed at Cape Roberts and Mario Zucchelli Station, highlight different local response of the glacier to ocean tide, with a minor amplitude of vertical motion at a point partially anchored at the bedrock close to the grounding line. During low tide, the velocity of the ice flow reaches its daily maximum, in accordance with the direction of seawater outflow from the fjord into the ocean, while the greatest daily tidal excursion generates an increase in the horizontal ice flow velocity. With the aim to extend the analysis in spatial terms, five COSMO-SkyMED Stripmap scenes were processed. (1) The Environmental Trace Gases Monitoring Instrument-2(EMI-2) is a high-quality spaceborne imaging spectrometer that launched in September 2021. To evaluate its radiometric calibration performance in-flight, the UV2 and VIS1 bands of EMI-2 were cross-calibrated by the corresponding bands (band3 and band4) of TROPOMI over the pseudo-invariant calibration site Dome C. (2) After angle limitation and cloud filtering of the Earth radiance data measured by EMI-2 and TROPOMI over Dome C, the top of atmosphere (TOA) reflectance time series were calculated. The spectral adjustment factors (SAF) were derived from the solar spectrum measured by the sensor to minimize the uncertainties caused by the different spectral response functions (SRF) of sensors. In addition, a correction method based on the radiative transfer model (RTM) SCIATRAN was used to suppress unaccounted angular dependence of atmospheric scattering. The radiation performance of EMI-2 is evaluated using the TOA reflectance ratio of EMI-2 and TROPOMI, combining the SAF correction and RTM-based correction methods. (3) It was shown that the time series trending of the TOA reflectance ratio between EMI-2 measurements and TROPOMI demonstrate flat characteristics and strong correlation. The mean reflectance ratios range from 0.998 to 1.09. The standard deviation of the reflection ratio is less than 3%. For 328 nm, 335 nm, 340 nm, 460 nm, and 490 nm, the mean values are close to one, and the relative radiometric bias estimated through EMI-2 and TROPOMI intercalibration is less than 3%, and for other wavelengths, the biases are less than 6%, except for 416 nm, which behaves higher than 7%. Mapping spatiotemporal changes in the distribution of blue ice regions (BIRs) in Antarctica requires repeated, precise, and high-resolution baseline maps of the blue ice extent. This study demonstrated the design and application of a newly-developed semi-automatic method to map BIRs in the Antarctic environment using very high-resolution (VHR) WorldView-2 (WV-2) satellite images. We discussed the potential of VHR satellite data for the mapping of BIRs in the Antarctic environment using a customized normalized-difference blue-ice index (NDBI) method devised using yellow, green, and near-infrared spectral bands of WV-2 data. We compared the viability of the newly developed customized NDBI approach against state-of-the-art target detection (TD), spectral processing (SP) and pixel-wise supervised (PSC) feature extraction (FE) approaches. Four semi-automatic FE approaches (three existing plus one newly developed) consisting of 16 standalone FE methods (12 existing + four customized) were evaluated using an extensive quantitative and comparative assessment for mapping BIRs in the vicinity of Schirmacher Oasis, on the continental Antarctic coastline. The results suggested that the customized NDBI approach gave a superior performance and the highest statistical stability when compared with existing FE techniques. The customized NDBI generally rendered the lowest level of misclassification (average RMSE = 654.48 ± 58.26 m2), followed by TD (average RMSE = 987.81 ± 55.05 m2), SP (average RMSE = 1327.09 ± 127.83 m2) and PSC (average RMSE = 2259.43 ± 115.36 m2) for mapping BIRs. Our results indicated that the use of the customized NDBI approach can greatly improve the semi-automatic mapping of BIRs in the Antarctic environment. This study presents the first refined map of distribution of BIRs around the Schirmacher Oasis. The total area of blue ice in the study area was estimated to be 106.875 km2, approximately 61% of the study area. The WV-2 derived BIR map area presented in this study locally refined the existing BIR map derived using Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-based mosaic of Antarctica (MOA) dataset by ~31% (~33.40 km2). The Southern Patagonian Icefield (SPI) is the largest continuous ice mass in the Southern Hemisphere outside Antarctica. It has been shrinking since the Little Ice Age (LIA) period, with increasing rates in recent years. An uplift of crustal deformation in response to this deglaciation process has been expected. The goal of this investigation is to analyze the crustal deformation caused by ice retreat using time-series data from continuous GPS stations (2015–2020) in the northern area of the SPI. For this purpose, we installed two continuous GPS stations on rocky nunataks of the SPI (the GRCS near Greve glacier and the GBCS close by Cerro Gorra Blanca). In addition, ice elevation changes (2000–2019) were analyzed by the co-registration of the SRTM digital elevation model and ICESat elevation data points. The results of the vertical components are positive (36.55 ± 2.58 mm a−1), with a maximum at GBCS, indicating the highest rate of crustal uplift ever continuously recorded in Patagonia; in addition, the mean horizontal velocities reached 11.7 mm a−1 with an azimuth of 43°. The negative ice elevation changes detected in the region have also accelerated in the recent two decades, with a median Δ h (elevation change) of −3.36 ± 0.01 m a−1 in the ablation zone. The seasonality of the GPS signals was contrasted with the water levels of the main Patagonian lakes around the SPI, detecting a complex interplay between them. Subglacial water bodies are critical components in analyzing the instability of the Antarctic ice sheet. Their detection and identification normally rely on geophysical and remote sensing methods such as airborne radar echo sounding (RES), ground seismic, and satellite/airborne altimetry and gravity surveys. In particular, RES surveys are able to detect basal terrain with a relatively high accuracy that can assist with the mapping of subglacial hydrology systems. Traditional RES processing methods for the identification of subglacial water bodies mostly rely on their brightness in radargrams and hydraulic flatness. In this study, we propose an automatic method with the main objective to differentiate the basal materials by quantitatively evaluating the shape of the A-scope waveform near the basal interface in RES radargrams, which has been seldom investigated. We develop an automatic algorithm mainly based on the traditional short-time Fourier transform (STFT) to quantify the shape of the A-scope waveform in radargrams. Specifically, with an appropriate window width applied on the main peak of each A-scope waveform in the RES radargram, STFT shows distinct and contrasting frequency responses at the ice-water interface and ice-rock interface, which is largely dependent upon their different reflection characteristics at the basal interface. We apply this method on 882 RES radargrams collected in the Antarctic's Gamburtsev Province (AGAP) in East Antarctica. There are 8822 identified A-scopes with the calculated detection value larger than the set threshold, out of the overall 1,515,065 valid A-scopes in these 882 RES radargrams. Although these identified A-scopes only takes 0.58% of the overall A-scope population, they show exceptionally continuous distribution to represent the subglacial water bodies. Through a comprehensive comparison with existing inventories of subglacial lakes, we successfully verify the validity and advantages of our method in identifying subglacial water bodies using the detection probability for other basal materials of theoretically the highest along-track resolution. The frequency signature obtained by the proposed joint time–frequency analysis provides a new corridor of investigation that can be further expanded to multivariable deep learning approaches for subglacial and englacial material characterization, as well as subglacial hydrology mapping. An automatic geomagnetic station for monitoring the Earth's magnetic field variations was installed in December 2020 at Talos Dome, a remote site on the Antarctic Plateau, about 300 km away from the permanent geomagnetic observatory at Mario Zucchelli Station (MZS). Designed and assembled at the laboratory of electronics of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) in Rome, this autonomous station is formed by a vector magnetometer specifically manufactured by Lviv Institute (Ukraine) for very low temperatures and a low-power system supplied by batteries charged by a wind generator and solar panel. Data, sampled at 1 Hz, are locally stored and can be downloaded once a year during the Antarctic summer expeditions. The goal was to integrate observatory data for better monitoring the geomagnetic field from an uncovered Antarctic area. In fact, it is well known that the distribution of geomagnetic observatories strongly favors the northern hemisphere, and each new instrumental installation in Antarctica should be considered as a useful attempt to balance the geomagnetic monitoring in the two hemispheres. The achieved goal was to obtain a long data series, keeping the station working even during the austral winter when the temperature can reach −60 °C; we recorded almost 11 months of data in one year and the station is still operating. Data from the new station, jointly with data from permanent observatories, improve the analysis of the magnetospheric dynamics and the ionosphere–magnetosphere coupling. Talos Dome, together with the Italian geomagnetic observatory at Mario Zucchelli Station and New Zealand geomagnetic observatory at Scott Base, constitutes a network along the 80°S geomagnetic parallel, which is interesting for studying the longitudinal propagation of geomagnetic signals of external origin. The Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains (GSMs) in the interior East Antarctic Craton are entirely buried under the massive East Antarctic ice sheet, with a ~50–60 km thick crust and ~200 km thick lithosphere, but little is known of the crustal structure and uplift mechanism. Here, we use airborne gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies for characteristic analysis and inverse calculations. The gravity and magnetic images show three distinct geophysical domains. Based on the gravity anomalies, a dense lower crustal root is modelled to underlie the GSMs, which may have formed by underplating during the continental collision of Antarctica and India. The high frequency linear magnetic characteristics parallel to the suture zone suggest that the upper crustal architecture is dominated by thrusts, consisting of a large transpressional fault system with a trailing contractional imbricate fan. A 2D model along the seismic profile is created to investigate the crustal architecture of the GSMs with the aid of depth to magnetic source estimates. Combined with the calculated crustal geometry and physical properties and the geological background of East Antarctica, a new evolutionary model is proposed, suggesting that the GSMs are underlain by part of a Pan-African age advancing accretionary orogen superimposed on Precambrian basement. Pack-ice seals are key indicator species in the Southern Ocean. Their large size (2–4 m) and continent-wide distribution make them ideal candidates for monitoring programs via very-high-resolution satellite imagery. The sheer volume of imagery required, however, hampers our ability to rely on manual annotation alone. Here, we present SealNet 2.0, a fully automated approach to seal detection that couples a sea ice segmentation model to find potential seal habitats with an ensemble of semantic segmentation convolutional neural network models for seal detection. Our best ensemble attains 0.806 precision and 0.640 recall on an out-of-sample test dataset, surpassing two trained human observers. Built upon the original SealNet, it outperforms its predecessor by using annotation datasets focused on sea ice only, a comprehensive hyperparameter study leveraging substantial high-performance computing resources, and post-processing through regression head outputs and segmentation head logits at predicted seal locations. Even with a simplified version of our ensemble model, using AI predictions as a guide dramatically boosted the precision and recall of two human experts, showing potential as a training device for novice seal annotators. Like human observers, the performance of our automated approach deteriorates with terrain ruggedness, highlighting the need for statistical treatment to draw global population estimates from AI output. Aliasing error induced by tide-related high frequency mass variations is one of the most significant errors in the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). In the present work, we evaluated the 161.0-day S2, 171.2-day P1, and 322.1-day S1 ocean tide aliasing in GRACE latest RL06 data based on nearly 15 years of observation from 2002 to 2017. Tide aliasing was still obvious for current GRACE observations, especially for S2 and P1 aliasing. S2 aliasing was mostly evident over West Antarctica, and was a clearly eastward propagation that travelled around Antarctica in about 2 years, while P1 showed strongest aliasing over South Greenland. More seriously, we found that GRACE mascon data showed an extremely large aliasing error. The mascon data may have unintentionally amplified the aliasing error on land due to the regularization (or constraint) applied for reducing signal leakage. Enough attention must be paid to tide aliasing when using GRACE for assessing mass variations at high latitudes (e.g., glaciers in polar regions) which can cause potential obstacles to estimation of actual seasonality. In this study, elevation change and surface morphology of CookE2, one of the most active subglacial lakes in East Antarctica, were analyzed by using Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) and a newly adapted Time-Segmented Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (TS-PSInSAR) techniques. Firstly, several DInSAR pairs were used to study the surface morphology of the subglacial lake during the rapid discharge event in 2007 and the subsequent recharge in 2010 by using ALOS PALSAR data and the continuous recharge from 2018 to 2020 by using Sentinel-1 SAR data. For time-series observation from 2018 to 2020, however, simple integration of DInSAR deviates largely from the satellite altimeter data because errors from the horizontal flow of the surrounding ice field or atmospheric phase accumulate. Conventional PSInSAR deviates from the altimeter data if the LOS displacement exceeds 300 mm, i.e., approximately 1/4 of the slant range resolution of the Sentinel-1 SAR in Interferometric Wide-swath (IW) mode, during the time window. Therefore, a series of Time-Segmented PSInSAR with a 4-month time window could accurately distinguish 1.10 ± 0.01 m/year of highly linear (R2 = 0.99) surface rise rate of CookE2 and 0.63 m/year of horizontal deformation rate of the surrounding ice field from 2018 to 2020. Vertical incidence pulsed ionospheric radar (VIPIR) has been operated to observe the polar ionosphere with Dynasonde analysis software at Jang Bogo Station (JBS), Antarctica, since 2017. The JBS-VIPIR-Dynasonde (JVD) provides ionospheric parameters such as the height profile of electron density with NmF2 and hmF2, the ion drift, and the ionospheric tilt in the bottomside ionosphere. The JBS (74.6°S, 164.2°E) is located in the polar cap, cusp, or auroral region depending on the geomagnetic activity and local time. In the present study, an initial assessment of JVD ionospheric densities is attempted by the comparison with GPS TEC measurements which are simultaneously obtained from the GPS receiver at JBS during the solar minimum period from 2017 to 2019. It is found that the JVD NmF2 and bottomside TEC (bTEC) show a generally good correlation with GPS TEC for geomagnetically quiet conditions. However, the bTEC seems to be less correlated with the GPS TEC with slightly larger spreads especially during the daytime and in summer, which seems to be associated with the characteristics of the polar ionosphere such as energetic particle precipitations and large density irregularities. It is also found that the Dynasonde analysis seems to show some limitations to handle these characteristics of the polar ionosphere and needs to be improved to produce more accurate ionospheric density profiles especially during disturbed conditions. Blowing snow is a common weather phenomenon in Antarctica and plays an important role in the water vapor cycle and ice sheet mass balance. Although it has a significant impact on the climate of Antarctica, people do not know much about this process. Fog events are difficult to distinguish from blowing snow events using existing detection algorithms by a ceilometer. In this study, based on ceilometer, the meteorological parameters observed by surface meteorology systems are further combined to detect blowing snow and fog using the AdaBoost algorithm. The weather phenomena recorded by human observers are 'true'. The dataset is collected from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016 at the AWARE site. Among them, three-quarters of the data are used as the training set and the rest of the data as the testing set. The classification accuracy of the proposed algorithm for the testing set is about 94%. Compared with the Loeb method, the proposed algorithm can detect 89.12% of blowing snow events and 76.10% of fog events, while the Loeb method can only identify 64.29% of blowing snow events and 31.87% of fog events. The Amery Ice Shelf (AIS) dynamics and mass balance caused by iceberg calving and basal melting are significant in the ocean climate system. Using satellite imagery from Sentinel-1 SAR, we monitored the temporal and spatial variability of the frontal positions on the Amery Ice Shelf, Antarctica, from 2015 to 2021. In this paper, we propose an automatic algorithm based on the SO-CFAR strategy and a profile cumulative method for frontal line extraction. To improve the accuracy of the extracted frontal lines, we developed a framework combining the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) and morphological image-processing strategies. A visual comparison between the proposed algorithm and state-of-the-art algorithm shows that our algorithm is effective in these cases including rifts, icebergs, and crevasses as well as ice-shelf surface structures. We present a detailed analysis of the temporal and spatial variability of fronts on AIS that we find, an advance of the AIS frontal line before the D28 calving event, and a continuous advance after the event. The study reveals that the AIS extent has been advanced at the rate of 1015 m/year. Studies have shown that the frontal location of AIS has continuously expanded. From March 2015 to May 2021, the frontal location of AIS expanded by 6.5 km; while the length of the AIS frontal line is relatively different after the D28 event, the length of the frontal line increased by about 7.5% during 2015 and 2021 (255.03 km increased to 273.5 km). We found a substantial increase in summer advance rates and a decrease in winter advance rates with the seasonal characteristics. Past redistributions of the Earth's mass resulting from the Earth's viscoelastic response to the cycle of deglaciation and glaciation reflect the process known as glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). GPS data are effective at constraining GIA velocities, provided that these data are accurate, have adequate spatial coverage, and account for competing geophysical processes, including the elastic loading of ice/snow ablation/accumulation. GPS solutions are significantly affected by common mode errors (CMEs) and the choice of optimal noise model, and they are contaminated by other geophysical signals due primarily to the Earth's elastic response. Here, independent component analysis is used to remove the CMEs, and the Akaike information criterion is used to determine the optimal noise model for 79 GPS stations in Antarctica, primarily distributed across West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula. Next, a high-resolution surface mass variation model is used to correct for elastic deformation. Finally, we use the improved GPS solution to assess the accuracy of seven contemporary GIA forward models in Antarctica. The results show that the maximal GPS crustal displacement velocity deviations reach 4.0 mm yr−1, and the mean variation is 0.4 mm yr−1 after removing CMEs and implementing the noise analysis. All GIA model-predicted velocities are found to systematically underestimate the GPS-observed velocities in the Amundsen Sea Embayment. Additionally, the GPS vertical velocities on the North Antarctic Peninsula are larger than those on the South Antarctic Peninsula, and most of the forward models underestimate the GIA impact on the Antarctic Peninsula. The internal and external mass migration and redistribution of the Earth system are usually accompanied by changes in the gravity field, and the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) has been proven to be able to effectively monitor and evaluate such changes. The Chile Triple Junction (CTJ) is the convergence point of the Nazca plate, the Antarctic plate and the South American plate. Subductions of different forms and rates in the north and south of the CTJ have varying degrees of impact on the surface and underground material changes of the South American plate. In this study, GRACE data are used in the estimation of the comprehensive mass changes in the South America Continent (SAC) Near the CTJ (~15° range). In addition, surface movement changes constrained by GNSS data cannot fully explain the GRACE results after deducting hydrological information, which indicates that residual signals might be attributed to mass changes beneath the crust, that is, the Moho interface deformation. After eliminating surface movement and hydrological signals from the comprehensive mass changes of GRACE, this study obtains the deep structural information and calculates the Moho changes of three significant regions with rates of −2.12 ± 0.67 cm/yr, 0.18 ± 0.19 cm/yr and −6.46 ± 1.31 cm/yr, respectively. Results have demonstrated that the subductions of the Nazca plate and the Antarctica plate have an effect on the uneven deformation of the Moho interface beneath the SAC. The Moho beneath the SAC mainly shows a deepening trend, but it is uplifted in some areas north of CTJ. On the whole, the rate of Moho changes is greater in the south than in the north. Crevasses are formed by glacier movement and the stresses within glacier ice. Knowledge of the crevasses' distribution is critical for understanding the glacier and ice shelf stability. In this study, we propose an automated crevasse extraction framework based on Sentinel-1 SAR imagery and an improved U-Net network. The spatial distribution of crevasses on Antarctic ice shelves in 2020 was mapped with a spatial resolution of ~40 m, and the characteristics of crevasses on the Nickerson Ice Shelf, Jelbart Ice Shelf, Amery Ice Shelf, Thwaites Glacier, and Shackleton Ice Shelf were analyzed. The results indicated the extraction accuracy of our method was 84.2% and the F1 score was 72.5%. Compared with previous published studies, the identification of the crevasse areas had good visual consistency. However, in some scenes, the recall rate was relatively lower due to the quality of the SAR image, terrain surrounding the crevasses, and observation geometry. The crevasses on different ice shelves had different characteristics in terms of length, density, type, and spatial pattern, implying the different stress structures of ice shelves. The Thwaites Glacier and the Nickerson Ice Shelf in the West Antarctica Ice Sheet (WAIS) had shorter ice crevasses, whereas the lengths of ice crevasses on the Jelbart Ice Shelf and the Amery Ice Shelf in the East Antarctica Ice Sheet (EAIS) were relatively long. Nevertheless, there are more closely spaced crevasses on the ice shelf in WAIS compared to that in the EAIS. For the distribution of crevasse types, the Nickerson Ice Shelf and the Shackleton Ice Shelf had various forms of crevasses. There were mainly transverse crevasses developed on the Jelbart Ice Shelf and the Amery Ice Shelf. This study provides a helpful reference and guidance for automated crevasse extraction. The method proposed by this study manifests great application potential and the efficacy of producing a time-series crevasse data set with higher spatial resolution and larger coverage. In the future, more Sentinel-1 SAR imagery will be applied and the effect of temporal and spatial variations in crevasses on the stability of ice shelves will be investigated, which will contribute to project the ice shelf stability and explore the sea level rise implications of recent and future cryosphere changes. Snow plays a crucial role in the hydrological cycle and energy budget of the Earth, and remote sensing instruments with the necessary spatial coverage, resolution, and temporal sampling are essential for snowfall monitoring. Among such instruments, ground-radars have scanning capability and a resolution that make it possible to obtain a 3D structure of precipitating systems or vertical profiles when used in profiling mode. Radars from space have a lower spatial resolution, but they provide a global view. However, radar-based quantitative estimates of solid precipitation are still a challenge due to the variability of the microphysical, geometrical, and electrical features of snow particles. Estimations of snowfall rate are usually accomplished using empirical, long-term relationships between the equivalent radar reflectivity factor (Ze) and the liquid-equivalent snowfall rate (SR). Nevertheless, very few relationships take advantage of the direct estimation of the microphysical characteristics of snowflakes. In this work, we used a K-band vertically pointing radar collocated with a laser disdrometer to develop Ze-SR relationships as a function of snow classification. The two instruments were located at the Italian Antarctic Station Mario Zucchelli. The K-band radar probes the low-level atmospheric layers, recording power spectra at 32 vertical range gates. It was set at a high vertical resolution (35 m), with the first trusted range gate at a height of only 100 m. The disdrometer was able to provide information on the particle size distribution just below the trusted radar gate. Snow particles were classified into six categories (aggregate, dendrite aggregate, plate aggregate, pristine, dendrite pristine, plate pristine). The method was applied to the snowfall events of the Antarctic summer seasons of 2018–2019 and 2019–2020, with a total of 23,566 min of precipitation, 15.3% of which was recognized as showing aggregate features, 33.3% dendrite aggregate, 7.3% plates aggregate, 12.5% pristine, 24% dendrite pristine, and 7.6% plate pristine. Applying the appropriate Ze-SR relationship in each snow category, we calculated a total of 87 mm water equivalent, differing from the total found by applying a unique Ze-SR. Our estimates were also benchmarked against a colocated Alter-shielded weighing gauge, resulting in a difference of 3% in the analyzed periods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on satellite remote sensing, several polynyas have been found in Prydz Bay, East Antarctica. Compared with the Mackenzie Bay Polynya, the only polynya in the west, the polynyas in eastern Prydz Bay have a larger area and higher ice production, but have never been studied individually. In this study, four recurrent polynyas were identified in eastern Prydz Bay from sea ice concentration data during 2002–2011. Their areas generally exhibit synchronous temporal variations and have good correlation with wind speed, which indicates that they are primarily wind-driven polynyas that need at least one stationary ice barrier to block the inflow of drifting sea ice. The components of the ice barriers of these four polynyas were identified through comparison of satellite remote sensing visible images and synthetic aperture radar images. All types of fast ice, including landfast ice, offshore fast ice and ice fingers serving as ice barriers for these polynyas are anchored by an assemblage of small icebergs and have an approximately year-round period of variations that also regulates the variability of polynyas. The movement and grounding of giant icebergs near the polynyas significantly affects the development of the polynyas.
