Bone segmentation is an important step to perform biomechanical failure load simulations on in-vivo CT data of patients with bone metastasis, as it is a mandatory operation to obtain meshes needed for numerical simulations. Segmentation can be a tedious and time consuming task when done manually, and expert segmentations are subject to intra- and inter-operator variability. Deep learning methods are increasingly employed to automatically carry out image segmentation tasks. These networks usually need to be trained on a large image dataset along with the manual segmentations to maximize generalization to new images, but it is not always possible to have access to a multitude of CT-scans with the associated ground truth. It then becomes necessary to use training techniques to make the best use of the limited available data. In this paper, we propose a dedicated pipeline of preprocessing, deep learning based segmentation method and post-processing for in-vivo human femurs and vertebrae segmentation from CT-scans volumes. We experimented with three U-Net architectures and showed that out-of-the-box models enable automatic and high-quality volume segmentation if carefully trained. We compared the failure load simulation results obtained on femurs and vertebrae using either automatic or manual segmentations and studied the sensitivity of the simulations on small variations of the automatic segmentation. The failure loads obtained using automatic segmentations were comparable to those obtained using manual expert segmentations for all the femurs and vertebrae tested, demonstrating the effectiveness of the automated segmentation approach for failure load simulations. Pancreatic cancer is associated with higher mortality rates due to insufficient diagnosis techniques, often diagnosed at an advanced stage when effective treatment is no longer possible. Therefore, automated systems that can detect cancer early are crucial to improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes. In the medical field, several algorithms have been put into use. Valid and interpretable data are essential for effective diagnosis and therapy. There is much room for cutting-edge computer systems to develop. The main objective of this research is to predict pancreatic cancer early using deep learning and metaheuristic techniques. This research aims to create a deep learning and metaheuristic techniques-based system to predict pancreatic cancer early by analyzing medical imaging data, mainly CT scans, and identifying vital features and cancerous growths in the pancreas using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and YOLO model-based CNN (YCNN) models. Once diagnosed, the disease cannot be effectively treated, and its progression is unpredictable. That's why there's been a push in recent years to implement fully automated systems that can sense cancer at a prior stage and improve diagnosis and treatment. The paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the novel YCNN approach compared to other modern methods in predicting pancreatic cancer. To predict the vital features from the CT scan and the proportion of cancer feasts in the pancreas using the threshold parameters booked as markers. This paper employs a deep learning approach called a Convolutional Neural network (CNN) model to predict pancreatic cancer images. In addition, we use the YOLO model-based CNN (YCNN) to aid in the categorization process. Both biomarkers and CT image dataset is used for testing. The coronavirus is caused by the infection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus: it represents a complex and new condition, considering that until the end of December 2019 this virus was totally unknown to the international scientific community. The clinical management of patients with the coronavirus disease has undergone an evolution over the months, thanks to the increasing knowledge of the virus, symptoms and efficacy of the various therapies. Currently, however, there is no specific therapy for SARS-CoV-2 virus, know also as Coronavirus disease 19, and treatment is based on the symptoms of the patient taking into account the overall clinical picture. Furthermore, the test to identify whether a patient is affected by the virus is generally performed on sputum and the result is generally available within a few hours or days. Researches previously found that the biomedical imaging analysis is able to show signs of pneumonia. For this reason in this paper, with the aim of providing a fully automatic and faster diagnosis, we design and implement a method adopting deep learning for the novel coronavirus disease detection, starting from computed tomography medical images. The proposed approach is aimed to detect whether a computed tomography medical images is related to an healthy patient, to a patient with a pulmonary disease or to a patient affected with Coronavirus disease 19. In case the patient is marked by the proposed method as affected by the Coronavirus disease 19, the areas symptomatic of the Coronavirus disease 19 infection are automatically highlighted in the computed tomography medical images. We perform an experimental analysis to empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, by considering medical images belonging from different institutions, with an average time for Coronavirus disease 19 detection of approximately 8.9 s and an accuracy equal to 0.95. A femoral fracture is a severe injury occurring in traumatic and pathologic causes. Diagnosis and Preoperative planning are indispensable procedures relying on preoperative radiographs such as X-ray and CT images. Nevertheless, CT imaging has a higher cost, radiation dose, and longer acquisition time than X-ray imaging. Thus, the fracture 3D reconstruction from X-ray images had been needed and remains a challenging problem, as well as a lack of dataset. This paper proposes a 3D proximal femoral fracture reconstruction from biplanar radiographs to improve the 3D visualization of bone fragments during preoperative planning. A novel Fracture Reconstruction Network (FracReconNet) is proposed to retrieve the femoral bone shape with fracture details, including the 3D Reconstruction Network (3DReconNet), novel Auxiliary class (AC), and Fractural augmentation (FA). The 3D reconstruction network applies a deep learning-based, fully Convolutional Network with Feature Pyramid Network architecture. Specifically, the auxiliary class is proposed, which refers to fracture representation. It encourages network learning to reconstruct the fracture. Since the samples are scarce to acquire, the fractural augmentation is invented to enlarge the fracture training samples and improve reconstruction accuracy. The evaluation of FracReconNet achieved a mIoU of 0.851 and mASSD of 0.906 mm. Fully automated and volumetric segmentation of critical tumors may play a crucial role in diagnosis and surgical planning. One of the most challenging tumor segmentation tasks is localization of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Exclusive application of conventional methods does not appear promising. Deep learning approaches has achieved great success in the computer aided diagnosis, especially in biomedical image segmentation. This paper introduces a framework based on convolutional neural network (CNN) for segmentation of PDAC mass and surrounding vessels in CT images by incorporating powerful classic features, as well. First, a 3D-CNN architecture is used to localize the pancreas region from the whole CT volume using 3D Local Binary Pattern (LBP) map of the original image. Segmentation of PDAC mass is subsequently performed using 2D attention U-Net and Texture Attention U-Net (TAU-Net). TAU-Net is introduced by fusion of dense Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and LBP descriptors into the attention U-Net. An ensemble model is then used to cumulate the advantages of both networks using a 3D-CNN. In addition, to reduce the effects of imbalanced data, a multi-objective loss function is proposed as a weighted combination of three classic losses including Generalized Dice Loss (GDL), Weighted Pixel-Wise Cross Entropy loss (WPCE) and boundary loss. Due to insufficient sample size for vessel segmentation, we used the above-mentioned pre-trained networks and fine-tuned them. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the Dice score for PDAC mass segmentation in portal-venous phase by 7.52% compared to state-of-the-art methods in term of DSC. Craniofacial anomaly including deformational plagiocephaly as a result of deformities in head and facial bones evolution is a serious health problem in newbies. The impact of such condition on the affected infants is profound from both medical and social viewpoint. Indeed, timely diagnosing through different medical examinations like anthropometric measurements of the skull or even Computer Tomography (CT) image modality followed by a periodical screening and monitoring plays a vital role in treatment phase. In this paper, a classification model for detecting and monitoring deformational plagiocephaly in affected infants is presented. The presented model is based on a deep learning network architecture. The given model achieves high accuracy of 99.01% with other classification parameters. The input to the model are the images captured by commonly used smartphone cameras which waives the requirement to sophisticated medical imaging modalities. COVID-19 has crippled the world's healthcare systems, setting back the economy and taking the lives of several people. Although potential vaccines are being tested and supplied around the world, it will take a long time to reach every human being, more so with new variants of the virus emerging, enforcing a lockdown-like situation on parts of the world. Thus, there is a dire need for early and accurate detection of COVID-19 to prevent the spread of the disease, even more. The current gold-standard RT-PCR test is only 71% sensitive and is a laborious test to perform, leading to the incapability of conducting the population-wide screening. To this end, in this paper, we propose an automated COVID-19 detection system that uses CT-scan images of the lungs for classifying the same into COVID and Non-COVID cases. The proposed method applies an ensemble strategy that generates fuzzy ranks of the base classification models using the Gompertz function and fuses the decision scores of the base models adaptively to make the final predictions on the test cases. Three transfer learning-based convolutional neural network models are used, namely VGG-11, Wide ResNet-50-2, and Inception v3, to generate the decision scores to be fused by the proposed ensemble model. The framework has been evaluated on two publicly available chest CT scan datasets achieving state-of-the-art performance, justifying the reliability of the model. This paper proposes a fully automatic method to segment the inner boundary of the bony orbit in two different image modalities: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). The method, based on a deep learning architecture, uses two fully convolutional neural networks in series followed by a graph-search method to generate a boundary for the orbit. When compared to human performance for segmentation of both CT and MRI data, the proposed method achieves high Dice coefficients on both orbit and background, with scores of 0.813 and 0.975 in CT images and 0.930 and 0.995 in MRI images, showing a high degree of agreement with a manual segmentation by a human expert. Given the volumetric characteristics of these imaging modalities and the complexity and time-consuming nature of the segmentation of the orbital region in the human skull, it is often impractical to manually segment these images. Pectus excavatum (PE) is one of the most common chest wall defects. Accurate assessment of PE deformities is critical for effective surgical intervention. Index-based evaluations have become the standard for objectively estimating PE, however, these indexes cannot represent the whole information of chest CT images and may associated with significant error due to the individual differences. To overcome these limitations, this paper developed a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically learn discriminative features and classify PE images. We also adopted block-wise fine-tuning methods based on the transfer learning strategy to reduce the potential risk of overfitting caused by limited data and experimentally explored the best fine-tuning degree. Our method achieved a high level of classification accuracy with 94.76% for PE diagnosis. Furthermore, we proposed a majority rule-based voting method to provide a comprehensively diagnostic results for each patient, which integrated the classification results of the whole thorax. The promising results support the feasibility of our proposed CNN-based CAD system for automatic PE diagnosis, which paves a way for comprehensive assessments of PE in clinics. Machine learning has considerably improved medical image analysis in the past years. Although data-driven approaches are intrinsically adaptive and thus, generic, they often do not perform the same way on data from different imaging modalities. In particular computed tomography (CT) data poses many challenges to medical image segmentation based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), mostly due to the broad dynamic range of intensities and the varying number of recorded slices of CT volumes. In this paper, we address these issues with a framework that adds domain-specific data preprocessing and augmentation to state-of-the-art CNN architectures. Our major focus is to stabilise the prediction performance over samples as a mandatory requirement for use in automated and semi-automated workflows in the clinical environment. To validate the architecture-independent effects of our approach we compare a neural architecture based on dilated convolutions for parallel multi-scale processing (a modified Mixed-Scale Dense Network: MS-D Net) to traditional scaling operations (a modified U-Net). Finally, we show that an ensemble model combines the strengths across different individual methods. Our framework is simple to implement into existing deep learning pipelines for CT analysis. It performs well on a range of tasks such as liver and kidney segmentation, without significant differences in prediction performance on strongly differing volume sizes and varying slice thickness.
