Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial in many aspect of ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of SWH has therefore been of immense practical value. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) time series prediction methods have been widely used for single-point short-term SWH time-series forecasting, resulting in many AI-based models claiming to achieve good results. However, the extent to which these complex AI models can outperform traditional methods has largely been overlooked. This study compared five different models - AutoRegressive (AR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and WaveNet - for their performance on SWH time series prediction at 16 buoy locations. Surprisingly, the results suggest that the differences of performance among different models are negligible, indicating that all these AI models have only "learned" the linear auto-regression from the data. Activation functions play a crucial role in enabling neural networks to carry out tasks with increased flexibility by introducing non-linearity. The selection of appropriate activation functions becomes even more crucial, especially in the context of deeper networks where the objective is to learn more intricate patterns. Among various deep learning tools, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) stand out for their exceptional ability to learn complex visual patterns. In practice, ReLu is commonly employed in convolutional layers of CNNs, yet other activation functions like Swish can demonstrate superior training performance while maintaining good testing accuracy on different datasets. This paper presents an optimally refined strategy for deep learning-based image classification tasks by incorporating CNNs with advanced activation functions and an adjustable setting of layers. A thorough analysis has been conducted to support the effectiveness of various activation functions when coupled with the favorable softmax loss, rendering them suitable for ensuring a stable training process. Purpose: The gradual increase in geriatric issues and global imbalance of the ratio between patients and healthcare professionals have created a demand for intelligent systems with the least error-prone diagnosis results to be used by less medically trained persons and save clinical time. This paper aims at investigating the development of image-based colourimetric analysis. The purpose of recognising such tests is to support wider users to begin a colourimetric test to be used at homecare settings, telepathology and so on. Design/methodology/approach: The concept of an automatic colourimetric assay detection is delivered by utilising two cases. Training deep learning (DL) models on thousands of images of these tests using transfer learning, this paper (1) classifies the type of the assay and (2) classifies the colourimetric results. Findings: This paper demonstrated that the assay type can be recognised using DL techniques with 100% accuracy within a fraction of a second. Some of the advantages of the pre-trained model over the calibration-based approach are robustness, readiness and suitability to deploy for similar applications within a shorter period of time. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first attempt to provide colourimetric assay type classification (CATC) using DL. Humans are capable to learn thousands of visual classifications in their life. Object recognition may be a trivial task for humans, due to photometric and geometric variabilities along with the high degree of intra-class variabilities, it can be a challenging task for machines. In this paper, 1,538 papers retrieved with the keywords "sports artificial intelligence (AI)" on the Web of Science database since 2007 were taken as the data source, and the Cite Space V software was used to visualize and analyze them. A visual knowledge graph was used to streamline the countries, institutions and authors conducting sports AI research, discipline distribution, research hotspots and development trends in the past 15 years. Subsequently, its development direction and research progress were discussed. Sports AI was widely distributed, with the US, China and the UK leading the way. The most prolific authors and teams in research on sports AI were concentrated in American universities. Their main research direction is to develop and improve smart wearable devices based on machine learning and deep learning technologies for different groups of people. Research on sports AI involved multiple disciplines, which mainly applied and referred to research methodologies and theories on engineering, computer science and sports science. It could be seen from the frequency and centrality of keywords that in the current field of sports AI, machine learning is the main direction, artificial neural networks is the main algorithm, and practical and empirical research based on data mining is the focus. The research hotspots were divided into three major clusters: physical health promotion, sports injury prevention and control, and athletic performance enhancement. How to introduce intelligent technology into sports for a perfect integration still has an arduous and long way to go. The integration of an oral cancer early detection and staging system through the implementation of a mobile application is the focus of this research paper. The mobile app comprises three main components: 1) detecting oral cancer using lips and tongue images, 2) oral cancer detection using CT scan images, 3) oral cancer detection employing histopathological images and assessing the severity of the patient's cancer using medical data. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) were utilized to train models for the first two parts, while logistic regression was employed to determine the severity of patients' conditions. The default scheduler of Apache Hadoop demonstrates operational inefficiencies when connecting external sources and processing transformation jobs. This paper has proposed a novel scheduler for enhancement of the performance of the Hadoop Yet Another Resource Negotiator (YARN) scheduler, called the Adaptive Node and Container Aware Scheduler (ANACRAC), that aligns cluster resources to the demands of the applications in the real world. The approach performs to leverage the user-provided configurations as a unique design to apportion nodes, or containers within the nodes, to application thresholds. Additionally, it provides the flexibility to the applications for selecting and choosing which node's resources they want to manage and adds limits to prevent threshold breaches by adding additional jobs as needed. Node or container awareness can be utilized individually or in combination to increase efficiency. On top of this, the resource availability within the node and containers can also be investigated.This paper also focuses on the elasticity of the containers and self-adaptiveness depending on the job type. The results proved that 15%-20% performance improvement was achieved compared with the node and container awareness feature of the ANACRAC. It has been validated that this ANACRAC scheduler demonstrates a 70%-90% performance improvement compared with the default Fair scheduler. Experimental results also demonstrated the success of the enhancement and a performance improvement in the range of 60% to 200% when applications were connected with external interfaces and high workloads. Surface transportation has evolved through technology advancements using parallel knowledge areas such as machine learning (ML). However, the transportation industry has not yet taken full advantage of ML. To evaluate this gap, we utilized a literature review approach to locate, categorize, and synthesize the principal concepts of research papers regarding surface transportation systems using ML algorithms, and we then decomposed them into their fundamental elements. We explored more than 100 articles, literature review papers, and books. The results show that 74% of the papers concentrate on forecasting, while multilayer perceptions, long short-term memory, random forest, supporting vector machine, XGBoost, and deep convolutional neural networks are the most preferred ML algorithms. However, sophisticated ML algorithms have been minimally used. The root-cause analysis revealed a lack of effective collaboration between the ML and transportation experts, resulting in the most accessible transportation applications being used as a case study to test or enhance a given ML algorithm and not necessarily to enhance a mobility or safety issue. Additionally, the transportation community does not define transportation issues clearly and does not provide publicly available transportation datasets. The transportation sector must offer an open-source platform to showcase the sector's concerns and build spatiotemporal datasets for ML experts to accelerate technology advancements. In the last 10 years, the demand for robot-based depalletization systems has constantly increased due to the growth of sectors such as logistics, storage, and supply chains. Since the scenarios are becoming more and more unstructured, characterized by unknown pallet layouts and stock-keeping unit shapes, the classical depalletization systems based on the knowledge of predefined positions within the pallet frame are going to be substituted by innovative and robust solutions based on 2D/3D vision and Deep Learning (DL) methods. In particular, the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are deep networks that have proven to be effective in processing 2D/3D images, for example in the automatic object detection task, and robust to the possible variability among the data. However, deep neural networks need a big amount of data to be trained. In this context, whenever deep networks are involved in object detection for supporting depalletization systems, the dataset collection represents one of the main bottlenecks during the commissioning phase. The present work aims at comparing different training strategies to customize an object detection model aiming at minimizing the number of images required for model fitting, while ensuring reliable and robust performances. Different approaches based on a CNN for object detection are proposed, evaluated, and compared in terms of the F1-score. The study was conducted considering different starting conditions in terms of the neural network's weights, the datasets, and the training set sizes. The proposed approaches were evaluated on the detection of different kinds of paper boxes placed on an industrial pallet. The outcome of the work validates that the best strategy is based on fine-tuning of a CNN-based model already trained on the detection of paper boxes, with a median F1-score greater than 85.0 % . In this paper, an innovative hybrid technique is proposed for the efficient training of artificial neural networks, which are used both in class learning problems and in data fitting problems. This hybrid technique combines the well-tested technique of Genetic Algorithms with an innovative variant of Simulated Annealing, in order to achieve high learning rates for the neural networks. This variant was applied periodically to randomly selected chromosomes from the population of the Genetic Algorithm in order to reduce the training error associated with these chromosomes. The proposed method was tested on a wide series of classification and data fitting problems from the relevant literature and the results were compared against other methods. The comparison with other neural network training techniques as well as the statistical comparison revealed that the proposed method is significantly superior, as it managed to significantly reduce the neural network training error in the majority of the used datasets. Attribute reduction, also known as feature selection, for decision information systems is one of the most pivotal issues in machine learning and data mining. Approaches based on the rough set theory and some extensions were proved to be efficient for dealing with the problem of attribute reduction.Unfortunately, the intuitionistic fuzzy sets based methods have not received much interest, while these methods are well-known as a very powerful approach to noisy decision tables, i.e., data tables with the low initial classification accuracy. Therefore, this paper provides a novel incremental attribute reductionmethod to dealmore effectivelywith noisy decision tables, especially for highdimensional ones. In particular, we define a new reduct and then design an original attribute reduction method based on the distance measure between two intuitionistic fuzzy partitions. It should be noted that the intuitionistic fuzzypartitiondistance iswell-knownas aneffectivemeasure todetermine important attributes.More interestingly, an incremental formula is also developed to quickly compute the intuitionistic fuzzy partition distance in case when the decision table increases in the number of objects. This formula is then applied to construct an incremental attribute reduction algorithm for handling such dynamic tables. Besides, some experiments are conducted on real datasets to show that ourmethod is far superior to the fuzzy rough set basedmethods in terms of the size of reduct and the classification accuracy. Human activity recognition is a recent area of research for researchers. Activity recognition has many applications in smart homes to observe and track toddlers or oldsters for their safety, monitor indoor and outdoor activities, develop Tele immersion systems, or detect abnormal activity recognition. Three dimensions (3D) skeleton data is robust and somehow view-invariant. Due to this, it is one of the popular choices for human action recognition. This paper proposed using a transversal tree from 3D skeleton data to represent videos in a sequence. Further proposed two neural networks: convolutional neural network recurrent neural network_1 (CNN_RNN_1), used to find the optimal features and convolutional neural network recurrent neural network network_2 (CNN_RNN_2), used to classify actions. The deep neural network-based model proposed CNN_RNN_1 and CNN_RNN_2 that uses a convolutional neural network (CNN), Long short-term memory (LSTM) and Bidirectional Long shorttermmemory (BiLSTM) layered. The system efficiently achieves the desired accuracy over state-of-the-artmodels, i.e., 88.89%. The performance of the proposed model compared with the existing state-of-the-art models. The NTURGB + D dataset uses for analyzing experimental results. It is one of the large benchmark datasets for human activity recognition. The technology of big data analysis and artificial intelligence deep learning has been actively cross-combined with various fields to increase the effect of its original low single field. Precision components commonly used in electronic products use changes in the conductivity of semiconductors to process information. This study aims to review key milestones and recent developments in the semiconductor industry using artificial intelligence methods. For this systematic review, we searched academic networks between 2015 and 2022, including Nature, Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis Online, Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The literature reviewed is based on conference proceedings and journal articles, specifically covering the key achievements of the discussion paper, the key technologies used, experimental results, opportunities, and future research pathways. After searching on an academic website, we selected six major studies. In five of these studies, visual object detection, surface defect detection, machine production scheduling application, fault diagnosis and prediction, and monitoring of the manufacturing process were made using artificial neural networks, machine learning methods, and hybrid models. In addition, the studies covered independent, single methods or used more than two types of technologies for performance comparison. Finally, we reviewed the strengths and weaknesses of the literature. We also analysed various datasets, acquisition systems, and experimental scenarios. The review shows that as the number of studies conducted in manufacturing continues to increase, more research is needed to unearth key information that is often overlooked, all of which are challenges in refining science and overcoming real-world scenarios. Municipal solid waste (MSW) management has become a highly challenging issue for many countries at different levels of development since the growth of population and urbanisation has resulted in a large increase in MSW generation. It is difficult to forecast the solid waste generated and its characteristics due to the non-linear nature of the MSW system, hence the importance of introducing artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and machine learning (ML) methods. This paper discusses a systematic literature review (SLR) on the application of AI techniques in MSW management, including waste generation prediction, waste collection and transportation and waste treatment and final disposal. The study reviewed and analysed the research studies published between 2000 and 2021, and investigated the current challenges faced by researchers in implementing AI approaches in the MSW system. It was concluded that artificial neural networks are the most used approach in various MSW-related problems. However, the lack and reliability of data are limiting the advancement of AI techniques in this field. Additionally, most studies claimed that their results are accurate and can be implemented in real-life scenarios, with an absence of a clear baseline to assess the performance of the adopted approaches. Introduction: The emergence of automated machine learning or AutoML has raised an interesting trend of no-code and low-code machine learning where most tasks in the machine learning pipeline can possibly be automated without support from human data scientists. While it sounds reasonable that we should leave repetitive trial-and-error tasks of designing complex network architectures and tuning a lot of hyperparameters to AutoML, leading research using AutoML is still scarce. Thereby, the overall purpose of this case study is to investigate the gap between current AutoML frameworks and practical machine learning development. Case description: First, this paper confirms the increasing trend of AutoML via an indirect indicator of the numbers of search results in Google trend, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Digital Library during 2012–2021. Then, the three most popular AutoML frameworks (i.e., Auto-Sklearn, AutoKeras, and Google Cloud AutoML) are inspected as AutoML's representatives; the inspection includes six comparative aspects. Based on the features available in the three AutoML frameworks investigated, our case study continues to observe recent machine learning research regarding the background of image-based machine learning. This is because the field of computer vision spans several levels of machine learning from basic to advanced and it has been one of the most popular fields in studying machine learning and artificial intelligence lately. Our study is specific to the context of image-based road health inspection systems as it has a long history in computer vision, allowing us to observe solution transitions from past to present. Discussion and evaluation: After confirming the rising numbers of AutoML search results in the three search engines, our study regarding the three AutoML representatives further reveals that there are many features that can be used to automate the development pipeline of image-based road health inspection systems. Nevertheless, we find that recent works in image-based road health inspection have not used any form of AutoML in their works. Digging into these recent works, there are two main problems that best conclude why most researchers do not use AutoML in their image-based road health inspection systems yet. Firstly, it is because AutoML's trial-and-error decision involves much extra computation compared to human-guided decisions. Secondly, using AutoML adds another layer of non-interpretability to a model. As these two problems are the major pain points in modern neural networks and deep learning, they may require years to resolve, delaying the mass adoption of AutoML in image-based road health inspection systems. Conclusions: In conclusion, although AutoML's utilization is not mainstream at this moment, we believe that the trend of AutoML will continue to grow. This is because there exists a demand for AutoML currently, and in the future, more demand for no-code or low-code machine learning development alternatives will grow together with the expansion of machine learning solutions. Nevertheless, this case study focuses on selected papers whose authors are researchers who can publish their works in academic conferences and journals. In the future, the study should continue to include observing novice users, non-programmer users, and machine learning practitioners in order to discover more insights from non-research perspectives. At present, in the age of computers and automation of services, deep learning (DL) technology, mainly the subset of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), is expressively used in innumerable domains of computer vision such as data analysis, image recognition, classification, natural language processing, and many more. Deep neural networks (DNN) have fundamentally revolutionized the artificial intelligence (AI) field. The transformer model is a type of DNN that was originally used for the natural language processing tasks and has since gained more and more attention for processing various kinds of sequential data, including biological sequences and structured electronic health records. Along with this development, transformer-based models such as BioBERT, MedBERT, and MassGenie have been trained and deployed by researchers to answer various scientific questions originating in the biomedical domain. In this paper, we review the development and application of transformer models for analyzing various biomedical-related datasets such as biomedical textual data, protein sequences, medical structured-longitudinal data, and biomedical images as well as graphs. Also, we look at explainable AI strategies that help to comprehend the predictions of transformer-based models. The several machine-learning algorithms described in the article are designing to improve the analysis and interpretation of data by incorporating various methods for optimizing georadar data processing processes. These methods include regression, classification and clustering. By incorporating these methods of optimizing the processing of georadar data into several machine-learning algorithms, the software can provide a comprehensive analysis and interpretation of the data obtained. This allows for a better understanding of the relationships, patterns and trends in the data, which ultimately leads to more informed decision-making and improved understanding. Coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems on our planet, and essential to the livelihood of hundreds of millions of people who depend on them for food security, income from tourism and coastal protection. Unfortunately, most coral reefs are existentially threatened by global climate change and local anthropogenic pressures. To better understand the dynamics underlying deterioration of reefs, monitoring at high spatial and temporal resolution is key. However, conventional monitoring methods for quantifying coral cover and species abundance are limited in scale due to the extensive manual labor required. Although computer vision tools have been employed to aid in this process, in particular structure‐from‐motion (SfM) photogrammetry for 3D mapping and deep neural networks for image segmentation, analysis of the data products creates a bottleneck, effectively limiting their scalability.This paper presents a new paradigm for mapping underwater environments from ego‐motion video, unifying 3D mapping systems that use machine learning to adapt to challenging conditions under water, combined with a modern approach for semantic segmentation of images.The method is exemplified on coral reefs in the northern Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, demonstrating high‐precision 3D semantic mapping at unprecedented scale with significantly reduced required labor costs: given a trained model, a 100 m video transect acquired within 5 min of diving with a cheap consumer‐grade camera can be fully automatically transformed into a semantic point cloud within 5 min. We demonstrate the spatial accuracy of our method and the semantic segmentation performance (of at least 80% total accuracy), and publish a large dataset of ego‐motion videos from the northern Gulf of Aqaba, along with a dataset of video frames annotated for dense semantic segmentation of benthic classes.Our approach significantly scales up coral reef monitoring by taking a leap towards fully automatic analysis of video transects. Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is endemic to Eastern and South-Eastern Asia, and, in 2020, 77% of global cases were diagnosed in these regions. Apart from its distinct epidemiology, the natural behavior, treatment, and prognosis are different from other head and neck cancers. With the growing trend of artificial intelligence (AI), especially deep learning (DL), in head and neck cancer care, we sought to explore the unique clinical application and implementation direction of AI in the management of NPC. Methods: The search protocol was performed to collect publications using AI, machine learning (ML) and DL in NPC management from PubMed, Scopus and Embase. The articles were filtered using inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the quality of the papers was assessed. Data were extracted from the finalized articles. Results: A total of 78 articles were reviewed after removing duplicates and papers that did not meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After quality assessment, 60 papers were included in the current study. There were four main types of applications, which were auto-contouring, diagnosis, prognosis, and miscellaneous applications (especially on radiotherapy planning). The different forms of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) accounted for the majority of DL algorithms used, while the artificial neural network (ANN) was the most frequent ML model implemented. Conclusion: There is an overall positive impact identified from AI implementation in the management of NPC. The present paper aims to compare the predictive performance of five models namely the Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Trees (DT), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Random Forest (RF) to forecast the bankruptcy of Tunisian companies. A Deep Neural Network (DNN) model is also applied to conduct a prediction performance comparison with other statistical and machine learning algorithms. The data used for this empirical investigation covers 25 financial ratios for a large sample of 732 Tunisian companies from 2011–2017. To interpret the prediction results, three performance measures have been employed; the accuracy percentage, the F1 score, and the Area Under Curve (AUC). The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the efficacy of memory-optimized machine learning solutions for the task of static analysis of software metadata. Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most promising technologies based on machine learning algorithms. In this paper, we propose a workflow for the implementation of deep neural networks. This workflow attempts to combine the flexibility of high-level compilers (HLS)-based networks with the architectural control features of hardware description languages (HDL)-based flows. The architecture consists of a convolutional neural network, SqueezeNet v1.1, and a hard processor system (HPS) that coexists with acceleration hardware to be designed. This methodology allows us to compare solutions based solely on software (PyTorch 1.13.1) and propose heterogeneous inference solutions, taking advantage of the best options within the software and hardware flow. The proposed workflow is implemented on a low-cost field programmable gate array system-on-chip (FPGA SOC) platform, specifically the DE10-Nano development board. We have provided systolic architectural solutions written in OpenCL that are highly flexible and easily tunable to take full advantage of the resources of programmable devices and achieve superior energy efficiencies working with a 32-bit floating point. In wireless communications, cognitive radio (CR) technology has significantly enhanced radio spectrum efficiency. Spectrum sensing is a key process in CR along with other major functions namely spectrum decision, sharing and mobility. Minimizing the processing delays, energy consumption of these functions and enhancing spectrum utilization is a major challenge. Spectrum inference has been proposed as a viable solution to overcome these problems. Many machine learning-based spectrum inference techniques using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and deep neural networks have been proposed in literature. In this paper we aimed to determine whether hybrid deep neural network based spectrum inference model outperform single model in time and frequency domains for spectrum occupancy dataset. Radial basis function (RBF) neural network tend to excel in extracting spatial features of spectrum data whereas bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) work very well for temporal dependencies of this data. Spectrum dataset exhibit both short-and-long term temporal/spectral dependencies. In this paper we have proposed spectrum inference based on a hybrid deep neural network RBF and BiLSTM. The proposed algorithm has been simulated using real time spectrum measurement data with time dimension ranging from (1 to 7 days), spectral range (0.7 GHz to 2.7 GHz) across three geographically varying locations Pune, Solapur and Kalaburagi in India. Hybrid deep neural network integration of RBF and BiLSTM is built, tested and compared with single models LSTM, BiLSTM for accuracy and speed. The hybrid method has outperformed single models to achieve Precision, Recall, F1 scores of 0.9959, 0.9575, 0.9763 respectively and training time improvement of 57.60% for GSM and whole band in frequency and time dimensions.
