The ability to estimate the probability of a drug to receive approval in clinical trials provides natural advantages to optimizing pharmaceutical research workflows. Success rates of clinical trials have deep implications for costs, duration of development, and under pressure due to stringent regulatory approval processes. We propose a machine learning approach that can predict the outcome of the trial with reliable accuracies, using biological activities, physicochemical properties of the compounds, target-related features, and NLP-based compound representation. In the above list, biological activities have never been used as an independent variable towards the prediction of clinical trial outcomes. We have extracted the drug-disease pair from clinical trials and mapped target(s) to that pair using multiple data sources. Empirical results demonstrate that ensemble learning outperforms independently trained, small-data ML models. We report results and inferences derived from a Random forest classifier with an average accuracy of 93%, and an F1 score of 0.96 for the "Pass" class. "Pass" refers to one of the two classes (Pass/Fail) of all clinical trials, and the model performed well in predicting the "Pass" category. Through the analysis of feature contributions to predictive capability, we have demonstrated that bioactivity plays a statistically significant role in predicting clinical trial outcome. A significant effort has gone into the production of the dataset that, for the first time, integrates clinical trial information with protein targets. Cleaned, organized, integrated data and code to map these entities, created as a part of this work, are available open-source. For some years, we have been witnessing a steady stream of high-profile studies about machine learning (ML) algorithms achieving high diagnostic accuracy in the analysis of medical images. That said, facilitating successful collaboration between ML algorithms and clinicians proves to be a recalcitrant problem that may exacerbate ethical problems in clinical medicine. In this paper, we consider different epistemic and normative factors that may lead to algorithmic overreliance within clinical decision-making. These factors are false expectations, the miscalibration of uncertainties, non-explainability, and the socio-technical context within which the algorithms are utilized. Moreover, we identify different desiderata for bridging the gap between ML algorithms and clinicians. Further, we argue that there is an intriguing dialectic in the collaboration between clinicians and ML algorithms. While it is the algorithm that is supposed to assist the clinician in diagnostic tasks, successful collaboration will also depend on adjustments on the side of the clinician., (© 2021 The Authors. In the modern display panel manufacturing industry, the Mura problem that occurs during initial shipment has a significant impact on improving image quality. The purpose of this paper is to effectively solve these Mura defects while reducing additional production costs. We propose an innovative method of storing and compressing the De‐Mura compensation data of the display panel in external memory. Two‐dimensional compensation data compression based on machine learning using surface fitting and vector quantization is presented as an effective response to the Mura problem. This approach, which achieves up to 8:1 compression ratio while minimizing image quality degradation through vector quantization, is expected to provide economic benefits to manufacturers. The paper also introduces a new surface prediction method that replaces the existing DC‐shift and uses residual vector quantization, which can reduce the implementation complexity of vector quantization. Background: Dementia is a cognitive decline that leads to the progressive deterioration of an individual's ability to perform daily activities independently. As a result, a considerable amount of time and resources are spent on caretaking. Early detection of dementia can significantly reduce the effort and resources needed for caretaking. Aims: This research proposes an approach for assessing cognitive decline by analysing speech data, specifically focusing on speech relevance as a crucial indicator for memory recall. Methods & Procedures: This is a cross‐sectional, online, self‐administered. The proposed method used deep learning architecture based on transformers, with BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) and Sentence‐Transformer to derive encoded representations of speech transcripts. These representations provide contextually descriptive information that is used to analyse the relevance of sentences in their respective contexts. The encoded information is then compared using cosine similarity metrics to measure the relevance of uttered sequences of sentences. The study uses the Pitt Corpus Dementia dataset for experimentation, which consists of speech data from individuals with and without dementia. The accuracy of the proposed multi‐QA‐MPNet (Multi‐Query Maximum Inner Product Search Pretraining) model is compared with other pretrained transformer models of Sentence‐Transformer. Outcomes & Results: The results show that the proposed approach outperforms the other models in capturing context level information, particularly semantic memory. Additionally, the study explores the suitability of different similarity measures to evaluate the relevance of uttered sequences of sentences. The experimentation reveals that cosine similarity is the most appropriate measure for this task. Conclusions & Implications: This finding has significant implications for the early warning signs of dementia, as it suggests that cosine similarity metrics can effectively capture the semantic relevance of spoken language. The persistent cognitive decline over time acts as one of the indicators for prevalence of dementia. Additionally early dementia could be recognised by analysis on other modalities like speech and brain images. Background: Digital‐first assessments leverage the affordances of technology in all elements of the assessment process: from design and development to score reporting and evaluation to create test taker‐centric assessments. Objectives: The goal of this paper is to describe the engineering, machine learning, and psychometric processes and technologies of a test security framework (part of a larger ecosystem; Burstein et al., 2021) that can be used to create systems that protect the integrity of test scores. Methods: We use the Duolingo English Test to exemplify the processes and technologies that are presented. This includes methods for actively detecting and deterring malicious behaviour (e.g., a custom desktop app). It also includes methods for passively detecting and deterring malicious behaviour (e.g., a large item bank created through automatic generation methods). We describe the certification process that each test administration undergoes, which includes both automated and human review. Additionally, we describe our quality assurance dashboard which leverages psychometric data mining techniques to monitor test quality and inform decisions about item pool maintenance. Results and Conclusions: As assessment developers transition to online delivery and to a design approach that places the test taker at the centre, it becomes increasingly important to take advantage of the tools and methodological advances in different fields (e.g., engineering, machine learning, psychometrics). These tools and methods are essential to maintaining the security of assessments so that the score reliability is sustained and the interpretations and uses of test scores remain valid. This paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning algorithm to achieve complete coverage path planning for deep‐sea mining vehicle clusters. First, the mining vehicles and the deep‐sea mining environment are modeled. Then, this paper implements a series of algorithm designs and optimizations based on Deep Q Networks (DQN). The map fusion mechanism can integrate the grid matrix data from multiple mining vehicles to get the state matrix of the complete environment. In this paper, a preprocessing method for the state matrix is also designed to provide suitable training data for the neural network. The reward function and action selection mechanism of the algorithm are also optimized according to the requirements of cluster cooperative operation. Furthermore, the algorithm uses distance constraints to prevent the entanglement of underwater hoses. To improve the training efficiency of the neural network, the algorithm filters and extracts training samples for training through the sample quality score. Considering the requirement of cluster complete coverage mission, this paper introduces Long Short‐Term Memory (LSTM) based on the neural network to achieve a better training effect. In this paper, a novel algorithm based on logistic regression digital backpropagation (LR‐DBP) is proposed to mitigate the effect of dispersion and nonlinearity in a long‐distance optical transmission system. The LR‐DBP can evaluate nonlinear effects by estimating the cross‐entropy error and adjusting the structure of DBP. The experiment is setup to demonstrate an 80 Gbit/s 16QAM signal transmitted across 1000 km single‐mode fiber. The results show that LR‐DBP achieves a 1.8 dB launch power improvement over the dispersion compensation algorithm and a 0.6 dB launch power gain with DBP. The proposed algorithm could obtain with 19.2% computational complexity decrease and 19.6% central processing unit (CPU) running time decrease by calculating the average numbers of real multiplications and CPU running times. Background and aims: Low outcome prevalence, often observed with opioid‐related outcomes, poses an underappreciated challenge to accurate predictive modeling. Outcome class imbalance, where non‐events (i.e. negative class observations) outnumber events (i.e. positive class observations) by a moderate to extreme degree, can distort measures of predictive accuracy in misleading ways, and make the overall predictive accuracy and the discriminatory ability of a predictive model appear spuriously high. We conducted a simulation study to measure the impact of outcome class imbalance on predictive performance of a simple SuperLearner ensemble model and suggest strategies for reducing that impact. Design, Setting, Participants: Using a Monte Carlo design with 250 repetitions, we trained and evaluated these models on four simulated data sets with 100 000 observations each: one with perfect balance between events and non‐events, and three where non‐events outnumbered events by an approximate factor of 10:1, 100:1, and 1000:1, respectively. Measurements: We evaluated the performance of these models using a comprehensive suite of measures, including measures that are more appropriate for imbalanced data. Findings Increasing imbalance tended to spuriously improve overall accuracy (using a high threshold to classify events vs non‐events, overall accuracy improved from 0.45 with perfect balance to 0.99 with the most severe outcome class imbalance), but diminished predictive performance was evident using other metrics (corresponding positive predictive value decreased from 0.99 to 0.14). Conclusion: Increasing reliance on algorithmic risk scores in consequential decision‐making processes raises critical fairness and ethical concerns. The Algorithm Selection Problem (ASP) considers the use of previous knowledge regarding problem features and algorithm performance to recommend the best strategy to solve a previously unseen problem. In the application context, the usual ASP for optimization considers recommending the best heuristics, whenever it faces a new similar problem instance, also known as the Per-Instance ASP. Although ASP for heuristic recommendation is not new, selecting heuristics and also their parameters, or the Per-instance Algorithm Configuration Problem, is still considered a challenging task. This paper investigates the use of meta-learning to recommend six different stochastic local searches and their parameters to solve several instances of permutation flowshop problems. The proposed approach uses several problem features, including fitness landscape metrics, builds the performance database using irace, and trains different multi-label recommendation models on a data set with more than 6000 flowshop problem instances. Experiments show that decision tree-based machine learning models achieve good performance, and the quality of the recommendations is capable of outperforming the state-of-the-art algorithm with tuned configuration. One of the useful knowledge representation tools, which can describe the joint probability distribution between some random variables with a graphical model and can be trained by a dataset, is the Bayesian network (BN). A BN is composed of a network structure and a conditional probability distribution table for each node. Discovering an optimal BN structure is an NP‐hard optimization problem that various meta‐heuristic algorithms are applied to solve this problem by researchers. The genetic algorithms, ant colony optimization, evolutionary programming, artificial bee colony, and bacterial foraging optimization are some of the meta‐heuristic methods to solve this problem using a dataset. Most of these methods are applying a scoring metric to generate the best network structure from a set of candidates. A Fixed Structure Learning Automata‐Based (FSLA‐B) algorithm is presented in this paper to solve the structure learning problem of BNs. There is a fixed structure learning automaton for each pair of vertices in the BN's graph structure in the proposed algorithm. The action of this automaton determines the presence and direction of an edge between the vertices. The proposed algorithm performs a guided search procedure using the FSLA and escapes from local optimums. Several datasets are utilised in this paper to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. By performing various experiments, multiple meta‐heuristic algorithms are compared with the introduced new one. Imbalanced image datasets consist of image datasets where there is a significant disparity in the number of samples across different classes. With imbalanced image datasets, learning algorithms often tend to be biased toward the majority class samples. This leads to poor classification of minority class samples as their training is not properly conducted. It becomes more complicated when the number of samples in the minority class is very low. In this paper, a novel hierarchical algorithm is proposed for generating new data using Capsule Generative Adversarial Networks (CapsGAN) to address the class imbalance problem in imbalanced image datasets. Unlike common GAN models, the proposed method incorporates an auxiliary CapsNet to identify high‐value images in both minority and majority classes. This identification is based on the ability to detect complex relationships between low‐level and high‐level features present in capsule networks. Furthermore, the proposed CapsGAN model is conditioned to generate minority class samples based on feature vectors of last capsule layer to achieve a more balanced image dataset. For evaluating the performance of the proposed model, an image dataset called CICS was collected and introduced. Extensive experiments were also conducted using various online image datasets from different domains, with varying numbers of classes and data sizes. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed model can generate high‐quality samples in cases where the image dataset or the number of minority class samples is relatively small. Despite the fact that machine learning (ML) algorithms to construct predictive models for pressure injury development are widely reported, the performance of the model remains unknown. The goal of the review was to systematically appraise the performance of ML models in predicting pressure injury. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CINAHL, Grey literature and other databases were systematically searched. Original journal papers were included which met the inclusion criteria. The methodological quality was assessed independently by two reviewers using the Prediction Model Risk of Bias Assessment Tool (PROBAST). Meta‐analysis was performed with Metadisc software, with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, sensitivity and specificity as effect measures. Chi‐squared and I2 tests were used to assess the heterogeneity. A total of 18 studies were included for the narrative review, and 14 of them were eligible for meta‐analysis. The models achieved excellent pooled AUC of 0.94, sensitivity of 0.79 (95% CI [0.78–0.80]) and specificity of 0.87 (95% CI [0.88–0.87]). Meta‐regressions did not provide evidence that model performance varied by data or model types. The present findings indicate that ML models show an outstanding performance in predicting pressure injury. Crop disease detection is important due to its significant impact on agricultural productivity and global food security. Traditional disease detection methods often rely on labour‐intensive field surveys and manual inspection, which are time‐consuming and prone to human error. In recent years, the advent of imaging technologies coupled with machine learning (ML) algorithms has offered a promising solution to this problem, enabling rapid and accurate identification of crop diseases. Railway track defects must be detected and repaired to ensure the safe operation of the railway. Signals generated by wheelset contact with rail discontinuities contain information about railway track structure and health. Each signal has a characteristic pattern, which is modified in the presence of defects. Signal decomposition is commonly used to extract characteristics from impact response signals. It is necessary to select an appropriate decomposition method for the wheel/rail impact signal. This paper presents a study of the effectiveness of decomposition methods to identify the most appropriate technique for classification of rail conditions. Vibration signals have been generated in experiments and decomposed. The signal characteristics are presented and energy‐based methods are used in an evaluation of the different approaches. Standard deviation is used to assess the similarity of parameter value from different intrinsic mode functions (IMFs); maximum and minimum differences from the mean value are used to consider the effectiveness of each technique in identifying specific damage types. The evaluation shows that variational mode decomposition (VMD) is suitable for the rail application. Classifiers are applied to the outputs of the selected decomposition method. Background: In silico testing of novel image reconstruction and quantitative algorithms designed for interventional imaging requires realistic high‐resolution modeling of arterial trees with contrast dynamics. Furthermore, data synthesis for training of deep learning algorithms requires that an arterial tree generation algorithm be computationally efficient and sufficiently random. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide a method for anatomically and physiologically motivated, computationally efficient, random hepatic arterial tree generation. Methods: The vessel generation algorithm uses a constrained constructive optimization approach with a volume minimization‐based cost function. The optimization is constrained by the Couinaud liver classification system to assure a main feeding artery to each Couinaud segment. An intersection check is included to guarantee non‐intersecting vasculature and cubic polynomial fits are used to optimize bifurcation angles and to generate smoothly curved segments. Furthermore, an approach to simulate contrast dynamics and respiratory and cardiac motion is also presented. Results: : The proposed algorithm can generate a synthetic hepatic arterial tree with 40 000 branches in 11 s. The high‐resolution arterial trees have realistic morphological features such as branching angles (MAD with Murray's law =1.2±1.2o$ = \;1.2 \pm {1.2^o}$), radii (median Murray deviation =0.08$ = \;0.08$), and smoothly curved, non‐intersecting vessels. Furthermore, the algorithm assures a main feeding artery to each Couinaud segment and is random (variability = 0.98 ± 0.01). Conclusions: This method facilitates the generation of large datasets of high‐resolution, unique hepatic angiograms for the training of deep learning algorithms and initial testing of novel 3D reconstruction and quantitative algorithms designed for interventional imaging. Machine Learning and Data Mining algorithms are used extensively to enhance the performance of Intrusion Detection Systems. The number of training instances and the dimensionality of data are crucial factors affecting the performance of the model built during the training of any supervised learning algorithms. A sufficient proportion of instances having relevant features from all classes of attacks and normal traffic are considered most desirable while building the classification model that classifies the network traffic into attack and normal. This paper proposes a methodology to improve the accuracy of the model by giving importance to the relevant features that can contribute to model building. The feature selection using correlation‐based and information gain‐based techniques during training and testing contributes much to the detection of stealthier attacks and minority attacks. Then the features of the less detected attacks are identified as the second phase of the filter that is used to improve the performance. The relevant features of stealthy attacks are identified based on the correlation of corresponding features of the attack and normal data as the attacks are made stealthy mostly by making it resemble the normal traffic. Finally, the attacks that are rarely found in the training data are oversampled to improve their detection. CICIDS 2017 data set is employed as it comprises stealthier attacks generated using modern tools. NSL KDD data set is also used for evaluation to compare the proposed work with existing literature as it is used in most of the available literature. Background: Malnutrition is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Early detection is important for timely intervention. This paper assesses the ability of a machine learning screening tool (MUST‐Plus) implemented in registered dietitian (RD) workflow to identify malnourished patients early in the hospital stay and to improve the diagnosis and documentation rate of malnutrition. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in a large, urban health system in New York City comprising six hospitals serving a diverse patient population. The study included all patients aged ≥ 18 years, who were not admitted for COVID‐19 and had a length of stay of ≤ 30 days. Results: Of the 7736 hospitalisations that met the inclusion criteria, 1947 (25.2%) were identified as being malnourished by MUST‐Plus‐assisted RD evaluations. The lag between admission and diagnosis improved with MUST‐Plus implementation. The usability of the tool output by RDs exceeded 90%, showing good acceptance by users. When compared pre‐/post‐implementation, the rate of both diagnoses and documentation of malnutrition showed improvement. Conclusion: MUST‐Plus, a machine learning‐based screening tool, shows great promise as a malnutrition screening tool for hospitalised patients when used in conjunction with adequate RD staffing and training about the tool. It performed well across multiple measures and settings. Other health systems can use their electronic health record data to develop, test and implement similar machine learning‐based processes to improve malnutrition screening and facilitate timely intervention. In this paper, we propose novel defect data augmentation procedure to overcome imbalanced class in development of machine learning models for display manufacturing process. As the amount of defective samples is extremely small compared to that of good samples, it causes severe overfitting and poor performance of models. In addition, numeric or tabular data augmentation is not suitable by GAN or VAE algorithms and its accuracy or similarity is lower than that of image augmentation. To settle this problem, we utilize both over and under sampling, and introduce anomaly score to figure out which process or equipment is in anomaly state. Kernel function or XAI algorithms are also utilized to discover effective features which differentiates defective samples and normal samples. After these process, we use to CT‐GAN to increase the number of defect datasets. In this way, we have demonstrated the enhanced the performance of GAN algorithm in tabular and numeric data. Literature screening is the process of identifying all relevant records from a pool of candidate paper records in systematic review, meta-analysis, and other research synthesis tasks. This process is time consuming, expensive, and prone to human error. Screening prioritization methods attempt to help reviewers identify most relevant records while only screening a proportion of candidate records with high priority. In previous studies, screening prioritization is often referred to as automatic literature screening or automatic literature identification. Numerous screening prioritization methods have been proposed in recent years. However, there is a lack of screening prioritization methods with reliable performance. Our objective is to develop a screening prioritization algorithm with reliable performance for practical use, for example, an algorithm that guarantees an 80% chance of identifying at least 80% of the relevant records. Based on a target-based method proposed in Cormack and Grossman, we propose a screening prioritization algorithm using sampling with replacement. The algorithm is a wrapper algorithm that can work with any current screening prioritization algorithm to guarantee the performance. We prove, with mathematics and probability theory, that the algorithm guarantees the performance. We also run numeric experiments to test the performance of our algorithm when applied in practice. The numeric experiment results show this algorithm achieve reliable performance under different circumstances. The primary focus of this study is the identification of anomalies in IoT devices arising sensor tampering, with an emphasis on the application of machine learning techniques. While supervised methods like one‐class SVM, Gaussian Naive Bayes, and XG Boost have proven effective in anomaly detection, there has been a noticeable scarcity of research employing unsupervised methods. This scarcity is mainly attributed to the absence of well‐defined ground truths for model training. In this paper, we propose a stochastic variance reduction gradient method with adaptive step size, referred to as the SVRG‐New BB method, to solve the convex stochastic optimization problem. The method could be roughly viewed as a hybrid of the SVRG algorithm and a new BB step mechanism. Under the condition that the objective function is strongly convex, we provide the linear convergence proof of this algorithm. Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a new method technique that supports reliable information transmission in a strong Doppler environment. Aiming at the radar target parameter estimation problem of integration of radar and communication (IRC) based on OTFS, this paper proposes a two‐step radar target parameter estimation algorithm combining maximum likelihood (ML) estimation and gradient descent (GD) principle. Firstly, the echo signal of the OTFS integrated signal is constructed and based on this, the ML estimation model is constructed, and the alternating projection (AP) algorithm is employed to make a rough estimation of the target parameters. Then the rough estimation results of the AP‐ML algorithm are employed as the initial value of the GD algorithm for the fine parameter estimation. Background: Assignments that involve writing based on several texts are challenging to many learners. Formative feedback supporting learners in these tasks should be informed by the characteristics of evolving written product and by the characteristics of learning processes learners enacted while developing the product. However, formative feedback in writing tasks based on multiple texts has almost exclusively focused on essay product and rarely included SRL processes. Objectives: We explored the viability of using product and process features to develop machine learning classifiers that identify low‐ and high‐performing essays in a multi‐text writing task. Methods: We examined learning processes and essay submissions of 163 graduate students working on an authentic multi‐text writing assignment. We utilised learners' trace data to obtain process features and state‐of‐the‐art natural language processing methods to obtain product features for our classifiers. Results and Conclusions: Of four popular classifiers examined in this study, Random Forest achieved the best performance (accuracy = 0.80 and recall = 0.77). The analysis of important features identified in the Random Forest classification model revealed one product (coverage of reading topics) and three process (elaboration/organisation, re‐reading and planning) features as important predictors of writing quality. The convolutional neural network (CNN) is an important network model for processing time series classification tasks. However, there can be a lot of noise in the data itself. The clarity of spatial feature expression of time‐series samples and the freeness and balance of data samples both have a big effect on how well CNNs can handle time series classification (TSC) tasks. This paper proposes a multi‐pose marking learning algorithm (MPML), which optimizes the spatial representation of data samples through multiple graphical representations of time series data and then solves the problems of freeness and heterogeneity of data samples through labeling and preferential learning of poorly trained sample data. The algorithm improves the model's robustness to noise by improving the spatial expression sentiment of the time series and the labeling learning of the feature data, thereby improving the convolutional neural network's performance to perform the TSC task. This paper presents a new approach to finding optimal patterns for the placement of fields of sonobuoys in a complex undersea environment. We model the problem as a biobjective one, where the aim is to minimise both sensor placement time and uncertainty over target localisation. Both objectives may be important in time‐critical localisation scenarios and our approach allows an operator to choose between different optimal solutions, favouring lower placement time or lower localisation uncertainty as operational circumstances require. We develop a two‐phase algorithm, where an offline multiobjective evolutionary phase finds initial Pareto‐non‐dominated solutions to a static problem and then an online multiobjective reinforcement learning phase finds improved solutions using updated information. We find that the evolutionary algorithm improves significantly on standard grid patterns and that the reinforcement learning algorithm improves further on the evolutionary phase. Chronic wounds are associated with significant clinical, economic and quality‐of‐life burden. Despite the variety of wound imaging systems available in the market for wound assessment and surveillance, few are clinically validated among patients of Asian ethnicity. We aimed to clinically validate the accuracy of a smartphone wound application (Tissue Analytics [TA], Net Health Systems Inc, Florida, USA), versus conventional wound measurements (visual approximation and paper rulers), in patients of Asian ethnicity with venous leg ulcers (VLU). A prospective cohort study of patients presenting with VLU to a specialist wound nurse clinic over a 5‐week duration was conducted. Each patient received seven wound measurements: one by a trained wound nurse clinician, and three separate wound measurements using TA on each of the iOS and Android operating systems. Inter‐rater and intra‐rater reliability between clinical and TA‐based measurements were analysed using intra‐class correlation statistics, with values of <0.5, 0.5 to 0.75, 0.75 to 0.9, and >0.9 indicating poor, moderate, good and excellent reliability, respectively. 82 patients (51% males), with a mean age at 65.8 years, completed the 5‐week study duration. 25 (30%) had underlying diabetes mellitus. Chinese, Malay and Indian ethnicity comprised 68%, 12% and 11%, respectively. The VLU healed in 26 (32%) of patients within the study period. In total, 358 wound episodes with 2334 wound images were analysed. Inter‐rater reliability for length, width and area between wound nurse measurements and TA application measurements was good (range 0.799‐0.919, P < 0.001). Separate measurements of intra‐rater reliability for length, width and area within the iOS or Android systems were excellent (range 0.967‐0.985 and range 0.977‐0.984 respectively, P < 0.001). Inter‐rater reliability between TA used on the iOS and Android systems was also excellent (0.987‐0.989, P < 0.001). Most machine learning algorithms are configured by a set of hyperparameters whose values must be carefully chosen and which often considerably impact performance. To avoid a time‐consuming and irreproducible manual process of trial‐and‐error to find well‐performing hyperparameter configurations, various automatic hyperparameter optimization (HPO) methods—for example, based on resampling error estimation for supervised machine learning—can be employed. After introducing HPO from a general perspective, this paper reviews important HPO methods, from simple techniques such as grid or random search to more advanced methods like evolution strategies, Bayesian optimization, Hyperband, and racing. Summary: This paper is concerned with covariance intersection (CI) fusion for multi‐sensor linear time‐varying systems with unknown cross‐covariance. Firstly, a CI fusion weighted by diagonal matrix (DCI) is proposed, and it is proved to be unbiased and robust and has higher accuracy than classical CI fusion. Secondly, the genetic simulated annealing (GSA) algorithm is used for multi‐parameter optimization problem caused by diagonal matrix weights. Considering the serious time‐consuming problem in optimization process of the GSA algorithm, Back Propagation (BP) network is used to obtain the optimal weights. Eventually, the DCI based on GSA algorithm and BP network is proposed. The proposed algorithm has higher accuracy and better stability than classic CI fusion algorithms. Background: Auditory–perceptual assessment of voice is a subjective procedure. Artificial intelligence with deep learning (DL) may improve the consistency and accessibility of this task. It is unclear how a DL model performs on different acoustic features. Aims: To develop a generalizable DL framework for identifying dysphonia using a multidimensional acoustic feature. Methods & Procedures: Recordings of sustained phonations of /a/ and /i/ were retrospectively collected from a clinical database. Subjects contained 238 dysphonic and 223 vocally healthy speakers of Chinese Mandarin. All audio clips were split into multiple 1.5‐s segments and normalized to the same loudness level. Mel frequency cepstral coefficients and mel‐spectrogram were extracted from these standardized segments. Each set of features was used in a convolutional neural network (CNN) to perform a binary classification task. The best feature was obtained through a five‐fold cross‐validation on a random selection of 80% data. The resultant DL framework was tested on the remaining 20% data and a public German voice database. The performance of the DL framework was compared with those of two baseline machine‐learning models. Outcomes & Results: The mel‐spectrogram yielded the best model performance, with a mean area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.972 and an accuracy of 92% in classifying audio segments. The resultant DL framework significantly outperformed both baseline models in detecting dysphonic subjects on both test sets. The best outcomes were achieved when classifications were made based on all segments of both vowels, with 95% accuracy, 92% recall, 98% precision and 98% specificity on the Chinese test set, and 92%, 95%, 90% and 89%, respectively, on the German set. Conclusions & Implications: This study demonstrates the feasibility of DL for automatic detection of dysphonia. The mel‐spectrogram is a preferred acoustic feature for the task. This framework may be used for vocal health screening and facilitate automatic perceptual evaluation of voice in the era of big data. As a universal approximator, the first order Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy system possesses the capability to approximate widespread nonlinear systems through a group of IF THEN fuzzy rules. Although group lasso regularization has the advantage of inducing group sparsity and handling variable selection issues, it can lead to numerical oscillations and theoretical challenges in calculating the gradient at the origin when employed directly during training. The paper addresses the aforementioned obstacle by invoking a smoothing function to approximate group lasso regularization. On this basis, a gradient‐based neuro fuzzy learning algorithm with smoothing group lasso regularization for the first order Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy system is proposed. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is rigorously proved under gentle conditions. In addition, experimental outcomes acquired on two approximations and two classification simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the algorithm with original group lasso regularization and L2 regularization in terms of error, pruned neurons, and accuracy. This is particularly evident in significant advancements in pruned neurons due to group sparsity. In comparison to the algorithm with L2 regularization, the proposed algorithm exhibits improvements of 6.3, 5.3, and 142.6 in pruned neurons during sin(πx)$(\pi x)$ function, Gabor function, and Sonar benchmark dataset simulations, respectively. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic pollutants and manufactured substances conferring toxicity to human health. The present study investigated whether pyrene, a type of PAH, harms rats. Our research provides an effective feature selection strategy for the animal dataset from Wenzhou Medical University's Experimental Animal Center to thoroughly examine the impacts of PAH toxicity on rat features. Initially, we devised a high‐performance optimization method (SCBA) and added the Sobol sequence, vertical crossover and horizontal crossover mechanisms to the bat algorithm (BA). The SCBA‐KELM model, which combines SCBA with the kernel extreme learning machine model (KELM), has excellent accuracy and high stability for selecting features. Benchmark function tests are then used in this research to verify the overall optimization performance of SCBA. In this paper, the feature selection performance of SCBA‐KELM is verified using various comparative experiments. According to the results, the features of the genes PXR, CAR, CYP2B1/2 and CYP1A1/2 have the most impact on rats. The SCBA‐KELM model's classification performance for the gene dataset was 100%, and the model's precision value for the public dataset was around 96%, as determined by the classification index. Chronic kidney disease is a global health issue that affects millions of people worldwide and causes significant social, economic, and medical issues. Several automated detection systems can diagnose chronic kidney disease. This paper proposes the recursive random forest feature selection (RFFS) based ensemble learning algorithm to diagnose chronic kidney diseases (CKD). In the decision point, decision tree‐based classifiers are used. The accuracy and kappa scores are used to determine the classification results. According to the results of the proposed algorithm's performance analyses, the ensemble learning classifiers outperform other classifiers for classifying CKD. The proposed RFFS algorithm achieves 6%–40% improved prediction accuracy using the feature selection algorithm. Further, it attains 15%–39% of reduced mean square error. The performance metrics, precision, sensitivity, specificity, f1 score, and Jaccard scores, have been analysed and show greater results for the RFFS algorithm. The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) usually experiences high rotor current and DC capacitor link voltage spikes during system fault events. In this paper, a novel data‐driven approach is proposed to enhance DFIG performance under fault scenarios. An advanced reinforcement learning algorithm called guided surrogate‐gradient‐based evolution strategy (GSES) is used to control the DFIG power and capacitor DC‐link voltage by adjusting the optimal reference signals. This controller is able to prevent the DFIG rotor from over‐current risk and maintain grid‐connected operation. The proposed GSES‐based control algorithm was evaluated through simulations on a 3.6‐MW DFIG in the PSCAD/EMTDC software. The current advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are likely to have profound economic implications and bring about new trade‐offs, thereby posing new challenges from a policymaking point of view. What is the impact of these technologies on the labor market and firms? Will algorithms reduce consumers' biases or will they rather originate new ones? How competition will be affected by AI‐powered agents? This study is a first attempt to survey the growing literature on the multi‐faceted economic effects of the recent technological advances in AI that involve machine learning applications. We first review research on the implications of AI on firms, focusing on its impact on labor market, productivity, skill composition and innovation. Then we examine how AI contributes to shaping consumer behavior and market competition. LEarning TO Rank (LETOR) algorithms are usually trained on annotated corpora where a single relevance label is assigned to each available document‐topic pair. Within the Cranfield framework, relevance labels result from merging either multiple expertly curated or crowdsourced human assessments. In this paper, we explore how to train LETOR models with relevance judgments distributions (either real or synthetically generated) assigned to document‐topic pairs instead of single‐valued relevance labels. We propose five new probabilistic loss functions to deal with the higher expressive power provided by relevance judgments distributions and show how they can be applied both to neural and gradient boosting machine (GBM) architectures. Moreover, we show how training a LETOR model on a sampled version of the relevance judgments from certain probability distributions can improve its performance when relying either on traditional or probabilistic loss functions. Finally, we validate our hypothesis on real‐world crowdsourced relevance judgments distributions. Overall, we observe that relying on relevance judgments distributions to train different LETOR models can boost their performance and even outperform strong baselines such as LambdaMART on several test collections. Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) have been successfully applied to quantum approximate optimization algorithms, variational quantum compiling and quantum machine learning models. The performances of VQAs largely depend on the architecture of parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs). Quantum architecture search (QAS) aims to automate the design of PQCs in different VQAs with classical optimization algorithms. However, current QAS algorithms do not use prior experiences and search the quantum architecture from scratch for each new task, which is inefficient and time consuming. In this paper, a meta quantum architecture search (MetaQAS) algorithm is proposed, which learns good initialization heuristics of the architecture (i.e., meta‐architecture), along with the meta‐parameters of quantum gates from a number of training tasks such that they can adapt to new tasks with fewer gradient updates, which leads to fast learning on new tasks. The proposed MetaQAS can be used with arbitrary gradient‐based QAS algorithms. Simulation results on variational quantum compiling (VQC) and quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) show that the architectures optimized by MetaQAS converge faster than a state‐of‐the‐art gradient‐based QAS algorithm, namely DQAS. The field of streaming data analysis has emerged as a result of new data collection and storage technologies in various areas, such as air pollution monitoring, detection of traffic congestion, disease surveillance, and recommendation systems. Sentiment analysis is an emerging technique that caters for semantic orientation and opinion mining. It is increasingly used to analyze online reviews and posts for identifying people's opinions and attitudes to products and events in order to improve business performance of companies and aid to make better organizing strategies of events. This paper presents an innovative approach to combining the outputs of sentiment classifiers under the framework of belief functions. It consists of the formulation of sentiment classifier outputs in the triplet evidence structure and the development of general formulas for combining triplet functions derived from sentiment classification results via three evidential combination rules along with comparative analyses. The empirical studies have been conducted on examining the effectiveness of our method for sentiment classification individually and in combination, and the results demonstrate that the best combined classifiers by our method outperforms the best individual classifiers over five review datasets. With the widespread use of learning analytics (LA), ethical concerns about fairness have been raised. Research shows that LA models may be biased against students of certain demographic subgroups. Although fairness has gained significant attention in the broader machine learning (ML) community in the last decade, it is only recently that attention has been paid to fairness in LA. Furthermore, the decision on which unfairness mitigation algorithm or metric to use in a particular context remains largely unknown. On this premise, we performed a comparative evaluation of some selected unfairness mitigation algorithms regarded in the fair ML community to have shown promising results. Using a 3‐year program dropout data from an Australian university, we comparatively evaluated how the unfairness mitigation algorithms contribute to ethical LA by testing for some hypotheses across fairness and performance metrics. Interestingly, our results show how data bias does not always necessarily result in predictive bias. Perhaps not surprisingly, our test for fairness‐utility tradeoff shows how ensuring fairness does not always lead to drop in utility. Indeed, our results show that ensuring fairness might lead to enhanced utility under specific circumstances. Our findings may to some extent, guide fairness algorithm and metric selection for a given context. In computer science, there are efforts to make machine learning more interpretable or explainable, and thus to better understand the underlying models, algorithms, and their behavior. But what exactly is interpretability, and how can it be achieved? Such questions lead into philosophical waters because their answers depend on what explanation and understanding are—and thus on issues that have been central to the philosophy of science. In this paper, we review the recent philosophical literature on interpretability. We propose a systematization in terms of four tasks for philosophers: (i) clarify the notion of interpretability, (ii) explain the value of interpretability, (iii) provide frameworks to think about interpretability, and (iv) explore important features of it to adjust our expectations about it. Background: There has been increasing interest in online professional learning networks in a variety of social media platforms, especially in Twitter. Twitter offers immediacy, personalization, and support of networks to increase professional knowledge and the sense of membership. Knowing the topics discussed in Twitter and the factors that affect the duration of a topic would help to sustain and reconstruct Twitter‐based professional learning activities. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyse the topics discussed and what factors affect the duration of a specific topic in 6 years within a virtual professional learning network (VPLN) using #Edchat in Twitter, based on media richness features. Methods: Internet‐mediated research and digital methods are used for data collection and analysis. Various text, natural language processing, and machine learning algorithms were used along with the quantitative multilevel models. This study examined 504,998 tweets posted by 72,342 unique users by using #Edchat. Results: There were 150 topics discussed over the 6 years and multilevel random intercept regression model revealed that a specific topic discussed in the #Edchat VPLN is discussed longer when it has more tweets, rather than retweets, posted by a high number of different users along with moderate text, high or moderate mentions with more hashtags. Takeaways: The study developed an automated social media richness feature extraction framework that can be adapted for other theoretical applications in educational context. Emergent topics discussed in Twitter among #Edchat VPLN members for professional development were identified. It extends the social media richness theory for educational context and explore factors that affect an online professional learning activity in Twitter. Recent years have witnessed intensive efforts to specify which requirements ethical artificial intelligence (AI) must meet. General guidelines for ethical AI consider a varying number of principles important. A frequent novel element in these guidelines, that we have bundled together under the term explicability, aims to reduce the black‐box character of machine learning algorithms. The centrality of this element invites reflection on the conceptual relation between explicability and the four bioethical principles. This is important because the application of general ethical frameworks to clinical decision‐making entails conceptual questions: Is explicability a free‐standing principle? Is it already covered by the well‐established four bioethical principles? Or is it an independent value that needs to be recognized as such in medical practice? We discuss these questions in a conceptual‐ethical analysis, which builds upon the findings of an empirical document analysis. On the example of the medical specialty of radiology, we analyze the position of radiological associations on the ethical use of medical AI. Summary: Corporate insolvency has significant adverse effects on an economy. With the number of multinationals increasing rapidly, corporate bankruptcy can severely disrupt the global financial environment. However, multinationals do not fail instantaneously; objective strategies combined with a rigorous analysis of both qualitative and quantifiable data can go a long way in identifying an organization's financial risks. Recent advancements in information and communication technologies have made data collection and storage an easy task. The challenge becomes mining the appropriate data about a company's financial risks and implementing it in forecasting a company's insolvency probabilities. In recent years, machine learning has been incorporated into big data analytics owing to its massive success in learning complex models. Machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forests (RF), Artificial Neural Networks, Gaussian Processes, and Adaptive Learning have been used in the analysis of Big Data to predict the financial risks of companies. In this paper, credit scoring is explored with regards to data processed using the collateral as an independent variable. The obtained results indicate that RF algorithm is promising for use in credit risk management. This research shows the advantages of the RF approach over the SVM algorithm are its speed and operational simplicity, and SVM has the benefit of higher classification accuracy than RF. The paper compares the SVM and RF algorithms to forecast the recovered value in a credit task. Mapper is a popular topological data analysis method to analyse structure of complex high‐dimensional data sets. As the Mapper algorithm can be applied to clustering and feature selection with visualization, it is used in various fields such as biology and chemistry. However, some resolution parameters have to be chosen by the user before applying the Mapper algorithm, and the results are sensitive to the selection. In this paper, we focus on the selection of two resolution parameters, the number of intervals and the overlapping percentage. We propose a new resolution parameter selection method in Mapper based on the ensemble technique. We generate multiple Mapper results under various parameter values and apply the fuzzy clustering ensemble method to combine the results. To evaluate Mapper algorithms including the proposed one, three real data sets are considered. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed ensemble Mapper method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Machine learning methods, especially deep learning models, have achieved impressive performance in various natural language processing tasks including sentiment analysis. However, deep learning models are more demanding for training data. Data augmentation techniques are widely used to generate new instances based on modifications to existing data or relying on external knowledge bases to address annotated data scarcity, which hinders the full potential of machine learning techniques. This paper presents our work using part‐of‐speech (POS) focused lexical substitution for data augmentation (PLSDA) to enhance the performance of machine learning algorithms in sentiment analysis. We exploit POS information to identify words to be replaced and investigate different augmentation strategies to find semantically related substitutions when generating new instances. The choice of POS tags as well as a variety of strategies such as semantic‐based substitution methods and sampling methods are discussed in detail. Performance evaluation focuses on the comparison between PLSDA and two previous lexical substitution‐based data augmentation methods, one of which is thesaurus‐based, and the other is lexicon manipulation based. Our approach is tested on five English sentiment analysis benchmarks: SST‐2, MR, IMDB, Twitter, and AirRecord. Hyperparameters such as the candidate similarity threshold and number of newly generated instances are optimized. Results show that six classifiers (SVM, LSTM, BiLSTM‐AT, bidirectional encoder representations from transformers [BERT], XLNet, and RoBERTa) trained with PLSDA achieve accuracy improvement of more than 0.6% comparing to two previous lexical substitution methods averaged on five benchmarks. Introducing POS constraint and well‐designed augmentation strategies can improve the reliability of lexical data augmentation methods. Multi‐label classification algorithms deal with classification problems where a single datapoint can be classified (or labelled) with more than one class (or label) at the same time. Early multi‐label approaches like binary relevance consider each label individually and train individual binary classifier models for each label. State‐of‐the‐art algorithms like RAkEL, classifier chains, calibrated label ranking, IBLR‐ML+, and BPMLL also consider the associations between labels for improved performance. Like most machine learning algorithms, however, these approaches require careful hyper‐parameter tuning, a computationally expensive optimisation problem. There is a scarcity of multi‐label classification algorithms that require minimal hyper‐parameter tuning. This paper addresses this gap in the literature by proposing CascadeML, a multi‐label classification method based on the existing cascaded neural network architecture, which also takes label associations into consideration. CascadeML grows a neural network architecture incrementally (deep as well as wide) in a two‐phase process as it learns network weights using an adaptive first‐order gradient descent algorithm. This omits the requirement of preselecting the number of hidden layers, nodes, activation functions, and learning rate. The performance of the CascadeML algorithm was evaluated using 13 multi‐label datasets and compared with nine existing multi‐label algorithms. The results show that CascadeML achieved the best average rank over the datasets, performed better than BPMLL (one of the earliest well known multi‐label specific neural network algorithms), and was similar to the state‐of‐the‐art classifier chains and RAkEL algorithms. Summary: Co‐training algorithm is one of the main methods of semi‐supervised learning in machine learning, which explores the effective information in unlabeled data by multi‐learner collaboration. Based on the development of co‐training algorithm, the research work in recent years was further summarized in this article. In particular, three main steps of relevant co‐training algorithms are introduced: view acquisition, learners' differentiation, and label confidence estimation. Finally, we summarized the problems existing in the current co‐training methods, gave some suggestions for improvement, and looked forward to the future development direction of the co‐training algorithm.
