The pulp and paper industry is critical to global industrial and economic development. Recently, India's pulp and paper industries have been facing severe competitive challenges. The challenges have impaired the environmental performance and resulted in the closure of several operations. Assessment and prediction of the performance of the Indian pulp and paper industry using various parameters is a critical task for researchers. This study proposes a framework for performance assessment and prediction based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), Artificial Neural Networks, and Deep Learning (DL) to assist industry administration and decision-making. We presented a case study based on eight industries to demonstrate the methodology's applicability. This study analyses and predicts industry performance based on sample data observations over 30 years. The result suggests the DEA-DL-based efficiency prediction has an overall MSE of 0.08 compared with the actual efficiency. Furthermore, the efficiency rankings are compared between the three techniques. The results suggest that the integrated DEA-DL method is primarily accurate in most scenarios with the actual values. Artificial Intelligence is quickly emerging as a technological solution for the agriculture industry to surmount its classical challenges. Artificial Intelligence is facilitating farmers to refine their products and alleviate unfavourable impacts due to the environment. The central concern of this paper is predictive analytics to develop a machine learning model to identify and predict crop yield based on multiple environmental factors. In this paper, a hybrid learner 'RaNN' is proposed that combines the feature sampling and majority voting technique of Random Forest in-combination with the multilayer Feedforward Neural Network to predict the crop yield. Research has also ascertained the essential features responsible for accurate yield prediction. The proposed model works for rice yield prediction, one of the chief grains of India. The region chosen for the work is Punjab, which is among the largest producer states of India for rice. The dataset consists of 15 attributes comprising the weather and agriculture data collected from the Indian Meteorological Department Pune, and Punjab Environment Information System (ENVIS) Center, Government of India. The study has also made a comparative assessment of 'RaNN' with machine learning methods like Multiple Linear Regression, Random Forest, Decision Tree, Boosting Regression, Support Vector Machine Regression, Ensemble Learner, and Artificial Neural Network. Our model RaNN has listed a better prediction accuracy with minimal error among the other techniques providing a 98% correlation between the actual and the predicted yield. This paper explores the different insider employee-led cyber frauds (IECF) based on the recent large-scale fraud events of prominent Indian banking institutions. Examining the different types of fraud and appropriate control measures will protect the banking industry from fraudsters. In this study, we identify and classify Cyber Fraud (CF), map the severity of the fraud on a scale of priority, test the mitigation effectiveness, and propose optimal mitigation measures. The identification and classification of CF losses were based on a literature review and focus group discussions with risk and vigilance officers and cyber cell experts. The CF was analyzed using secondary data. We predicted and prioritized CF based on machine learning-derived Random Forest (RF). An efficient fraud mitigation model was developed based on an offender-victim-centric approach. Mitigation is advised both before and after fraud occurs. Through the findings of this research, banks and fraud investigators can prevent CF by detecting it quickly and controlling it on time. This study proposes a structured, sustainable CF mitigation plan that protects banks, employees, regulators, customers, and the economy, thus saving time, resources, and money. Deficits in social verbal communication in individuals with Social Communication Disorder (SCD) is of concern and SCD in the human community is prevalent in large population throughout the globe. Deficits in verbal social communication are prevalent in a large population. This paper aimed to propose internet connected multi-system architecture which is capable to support verbal communication in a social environment for individuals with social communication deficits. Implementation methodology was included with corpus collection for specific communication, deep learning based machine training for intelligent communication, and implementation of the trained algorithm on internet connected electronic multiple social communication devices. The implemented system is smart enough to initiate and maintain two types of communication; the first type includes communication between multiple individuals on the remote location and the second type includes communication with the individual present in the physical listening range. The system was investigated in terms of its algorithmic parameters and found 97% to 100% in terms of training and testing accuracy with negligible mean squared error. Vocal-Friend analysed results based on audio-bot simulative conditions provide more than 91% accuracy, interaction rate and fallback rate. On the basis of the satisfaction analysis, above average results were noticed. In terms of technical implementations and satisfaction analysis, results found acceptable with above average score. Proposed framework is easy to use by caregivers with even having little knowledge. Support individual with deficit to learn social verbal communication skill to survive in society. Aiding parents, caregivers and professionals to understand the communication needs of individuals with communication deficits. Aim/Purpose This paper aims to analyze the availability and pricing of perishable farm produce before and during the lockdown restrictions imposed due to Covid-19. This paper also proposes machine learning and deep learning models to help the farmers decide on an appropriate market to sell their farm produce and get a fair price for their product. Background Developing countries like India have regulated agricultural markets governed by country-specific protective laws like the Essential Commodities Act and the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Act. These regulations restrict the sale of agricultural produce to a predefined set of local markets. Covid-19 pandemic led to a lockdown during the first half of 2020 which resulted in supply disruption and demand-supply mismatch of agricultural commodities at these local markets. These demand-supply dynamics led to disruptions in the pricing of the farm produce leading to a lower price realization for farmers. Hence it is essential to analyze the impact of this disruption on the pricing of farm produce at a granular level. Moreover, the farmers need a tool that guides them with the most suitable market/city/town to sell their farm produce to get a fair price. Methodology One hundred and fifty thousand samples from the agricultural dataset, released by the Government of India, were used to perform statistical analysis and identify the supply disruptions as well as price disruptions of perishable agricultural produce. In addition, more than seventeen thousand samples were used to implement and train machine learning and deep learning models that can predict and guide the farmers about the appropriate market to sell their farm produce. In essence, the paper uses descriptive analytics to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on agricultural produce pricing. The paper explores the usage of prescriptive analytics to recommend an appropriate market to sell agricultural produce. Contribution Five machine learning models based on Logistic Regression, K-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting, and three deep learning models based on Artificial Neural Networks were implemented. The performance of these models was compared using metrics like Precision, Recall, Accuracy, and F1-Score. Findings Among the five classification models, the Gradient Boosting classifier was the optimal classifier that achieved precision, recall, accuracy, and F1 score of 99%. Out of the three deep learning models, the Adam optimizer-based deep neural network achieved precision, recall, accuracy, and F1 score of 99%. Recommendations for Practitioners Gradient boosting technique and Adam-based deep learning model should be the preferred choice for analyzing agricultural pricing-related problems. Recommendations for Researchers Ensemble learning techniques like Random Forest and Gradient boosting perform better than non-Ensemble classification techniques. Hyperparameter tuning is an essential step in developing these models and it improves the performance of the model. Impact on Society Statistical analysis of the data revealed the true nature of demand and supply and price disruption. This analysis helps to assess the revenue impact borne by the farmers due to Covid-19. The machine learning and deep learning models help the farmers to get a better price for their crops. Though the dataset used in this paper is related to India, the outcome of this research work applies to many developing countries that have similar regulated markets. Solar photovoltaic (PV) power is emerging as one of the most viable renewable energy sources. The recent enhancements in the integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid create a dire need for reliable solar power forecasting techniques. In this paper, a new long‐term solar PV power forecasting approach using long short‐term memory (LSTM) model with Nadam optimizer is presented. The LSTM model performs better with the time‐series data as it persists information of more time steps. The experimental models are realized on a 250.25 kW installed capacity solar PV power system located at MANIT Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. The proposed model is compared with two time‐series models and eight neural network models using LSTM with different optimizers. The obtained results using LSTM with Nadam optimizer present a significant improvement in the forecasting accuracy of 30.56% over autoregressive integrated moving average, 47.48% over seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average, and 1.35%, 1.43%, 3.51%, 4.88%, 11.84%, 50.69%, and 58.29% over models using RMSprop, Adam, Adamax, SGD, Adagrad, Adadelta, and Ftrl optimizer, respectively. Tamizhi (Tamil-Brahmi) script is one of the oldest scripts in India from which most of the modern Indian scripts are evolved. The ancient historical documents are generally preserved as digitised texts using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technique. But the development of OCR for Tamizhi documents is highly challenging as many characters have similar shapes and structures with very small variations. In specific, for Tamizhi script it is very difficult to build an OCR as many characters are combined characters. This can be a single character formed by a single vowel/consonant or compound characters formed by combining vowels and consonants. This paper deals with the development of Tamizhi OCR for printed Tamizhi documents which is anticipated to perform efficiently irrespective of poor quality, noises and various input formats of Tamizhi documents. This is a preliminary study towards developing an OCR for handwritten Tamizhi inscription images that recognises text captured from onsite inscriptions. The change in price of a group of goods and services is reflected in terms of consumer price index (CPI), making it one of the most important economic indicators. This is also the mostly used measure of inflation. Forecasted CPI values help the Government to take corrective measures to control the economic conditions of the country. This paper implements and examines two machine learning models such as artificial neural network (ANN) and ANN model optimized with particle swarm optimization (PSO) known as ANN‐PSO to assess the accuracy in predictability of CPI. The data set for four groups such as food and beverages, housing, clothing, and footwear used for the calculation of all India CPI has been taken from the official website of the Government of India. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) has been used as the validator for model accuracy. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have major impact to health and medical infrastructure, economy, and agriculture. Prominent computational and mathematical models have been unreliable due to the complexity of the spread of infections. Moreover, lack of data collection and reporting makes modelling attempts difficult and unreliable. Hence, we need to re-look at the situation with reliable data sources and innovative forecasting models. Deep learning models such as recurrent neural networks are well suited for modelling spatiotemporal sequences. In this paper, we apply recurrent neural networks such as long short term memory (LSTM), bidirectional LSTM, and encoder-decoder LSTM models for multi-step (short-term) COVID-19 infection forecasting. We select Indian states with COVID-19 hotpots and capture the first (2020) and second (2021) wave of infections and provide two months ahead forecast. Our model predicts that the likelihood of another wave of infections in October and November 2021 is low; however, the authorities need to be vigilant given emerging variants of the virus. The accuracy of the predictions motivate the application of the method in other countries and regions. Nevertheless, the challenges in modelling remain due to the reliability of data and difficulties in capturing factors such as population density, logistics, and social aspects such as culture and lifestyle. Crop yield prediction is an important aspect of agriculture. The timely and accurate crop yield predictions can be of great help for policy makers and farmers in planning and decision making. Generally, statistical models are employed to predict the crop yield which is time consuming and tedious. Emerging trends of deep learning and machine learning has come up as a major breakthrough in the arena. Deep learning models have the inherent ability to perform feature extraction in large dataset thus more suitable for predictions. In this paper, a deep learning-based Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model is employed to predict wheat crop yield of northern region of India. The present study also employed LSTM to unravel the vanishing gradient problem inherent in RNN model. Experiments were conducted using 43 years benchmark dataset and proposed model results were compared with three machine learning models. Evidently, the results obtained from RNN-LSTM model(RMSE: 147.12,MAE: 60.50), Artificial Neural Network(RMSE: 732.14,MAE: 623.13), Random Forest (RMSE: 540.88, MAE: 449.36) and Multivariate Linear Regression (RMSE: 915.64,MAE: 796.07), proved the efficacy of model. Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has become one of the deadliest pandemics that has affected almost all the nations in the world. Lockdown and systematic re-opening of shopping malls, offices, etc. is still one of the major weapons against this virus. However, the government and medical agencies take long time to reopen the places due to risks involved in this deadly virus. The delay to reopen places has resulted in sharp decline in the growth of economy. In this paper a current context aware framework is proposed which uses multiple inputs for a specific region to decide whether to open it or not. The proposed framework used series of deep neural network models to generate recommendations specific to a particular region. Most of the inputs are real-time and readily available with the government. The main aim is to develop framework which can be used in any kind of pandemic even in small region to easily contain it. However, it has been tested using opensource data available for COVID-19. Data was crawled from web for 22 districts of Haryana state of India. Summary: As it is known that the whole world is battling against the Corona Virus Disease or COVID19 and trying their level best to stop the spread of this pandemic. To avoid the spread, several countries like China, Italy, Spain, America took strict measures like nationwide lockdown or by cordoning off the areas that were suspected of having risks of community spread. Taking cues from the foreign counterparts, the government of India undertook an important decision of nationwide full lockdown on March 25th which was further extended till May 4th, 2020 (47 days‐full lockdown). Looking at the current situation government of India pushed the lockdown further with eased curbs, divided the nation into green, orange and red zones, rapid testing of citizens in containment area, mandatory wearing of masks and following social distancing among others. The outbreak of the pandemic, has led to the large economic shock to the world which was never been experienced since decades. Moreover it brought a great uncertainty over the world wide electricity sector as to slow down the spread of the virus, many countries have issued restrictions, including the closure of malls, educational institutions, halting trains, suspending of flights, implemented partial or full lockdowns, insisted work from home to the employees. In this paper, the impact analysis of electricity consumption of state Haryana (India) is done using machine learning conventional algorithms and artificial neural network and electricity load forecasting is done for a week so as to aid the electricity board to know the consumption of the area pre hand and likewise can restrict the electricity production as per requirement. Thus, it will help power system to secure electricity supply and scheduling and reduce wastes since electricity is difficult to store. For this the dataset from regional electricity boards of Haryana that is, Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam and Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam were analysed and electricity loads of state were predicted using python programming and as per result analysis it was observed that artificial neural network out performs conventional machine learning models. This paper brings out the interconnection of flash rate density (FRD) with convection and stability parameters over Andhra Pradesh (AP), India. The convection parameters include rainfall, relative humidity, specific humidity, surface air temperature (SAT) and air temperature (at 850 mb). The stability parameters include convective available potential energy (CAPE), lifted index, K-index, total totals index (TTI), humidity index and total precipitable water. Both convective and stability parameters indicate good correlation with lightning activity. SAT and AT 850 mb have shown good correlations with lightning, which is a clear indication of interaction between warm air and dry air. CAPE and TTI have shown strong positive correlation with lightning activity. The correlation coefficient between FRD and CAPE is 0.81. We have also studied the influence of convective and stability parameters during lightning and no lightning activity. Later, we also attempted the estimation of lightning activity by using artificial neural network model. By using convection and stability parameters, six learning algorithms were used for training the artificial neural network. Scaled conjugate gradient backpropagation training algorithm has given the better estimation, whereas resilient backpropagation training algorithm has shown the poor estimation of FRD. Rivers are an integral part of the hydrological cycle and are the major geological agents which erode the continents and transport water and sediments to the oceans. Thus rivers act an important link between continents and oceans for the mass balance. Estimating the suspended sediment yield is one of the crucial aims in the field of managing, designing and planning of any river system or reservoir. To determine the suspended sediment yield in a river basin demands more labour or it is more costly when automatic sampling devices are used. The number of variables and the inter-relationship existing among them influence the suspended sediment yield and the nature of these inter-relationships is neither linear nor simple. Unfortunately, it is a difficult task to determine the suspended sediment yield when traditional mathematical models are used as complex variables and processes are involved. The major key factors, such as basin geology (rock type), relief, rainfall, temperature, water discharge and catchment area that affect sediment yield, are used as inputs to develop the model for predicting the suspended sediment yield in the Mahanadi River. In this paper, a multi-objective genetic algorithm for artificial neural network (MOGA-ANN)-based approach is used for predicting the suspended sediment yield. The MOGA assists ANN to minimize the two competing objectives, i.e. mean error and variance simultaneously. Thus in this study, a hybrid artificial intelligence-based method, MOGA-ANN model, is developed using the hydro-geological-climatic factors where all parameters associated with the ANN models are optimized simultaneously using MOGAs to estimate the suspended sediment yield in the Mahanadi River basin. The ANN's parameters are optimized globally by the MOGA to accurate estimation. The study has been carried out to develop MOGA-ANN for estimating the suspended sediment load using 20-year data at the Tikarapara gauging station which is the last downstream station in the Mahanadi River. The MOGA-ANN model provided the root mean square error 0.0281, correlation coefficient (r) 0.966 and efficiency factor 0.919 during the testing phase. Under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) is a popular technique around the world, especially in India for maximizing the power system stability and to avoid blackout in case of contingency. Electricity demand–supply gap due to generation failure is the main cause for power shortage, which leads to frequency degradation and major collapse of the whole system. Load shedding helps utility to restore the system stability. But the traditional load shedding methods shed incorrect as well as excess load which increases economic loss to utility and discomfort to customers. In this paper, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) based UFLS controller using back-propagation and least-square estimation algorithm is simulated and tested for Tamil Nadu power system, a leading industrialized state of India with an objective to shed minimum possible load. The simulations are carried out using MATLAB toolbox. The performance of the proposed ANFIS based UFLS controller is compared with an artificial neural network (ANN) based controller. The comparison of ANN and ANFIS based UFLS shows that by using the proposed ANFIS controller, the amount of load shed could be reduced between 83 and 1264 MW for various generation–load scenarios, which significantly benefits both utility and customers to enhance energy security and revenue up to 7.5 million INR per hour. Accurate simulation of extreme events of runoff is very important for public safety and hydrological engineering. The simulation of extreme events mainly employs the rainfall-runoff models. This paper tests the potential of soft computing technique-based rainfall-runoff models to simulate the peak runoff events in order to develop an alarming system. This study mainly focusses on hybrid Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS). The six different regression models used are conventional Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Wavelet Artificial Neural Network (WANN), Bootstrapped Artificial Neural Network (BANN), Wavelet Bootstrapped Artificial Neural Network (WBANN), Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) and Wavelet Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (WMARS). The potential inputs were selected based on Auto Correlation Function (ACF) and Cross Correlation Functions (CCF). To implement the methodology, the Jhelum basin in the northern part of India was selected. Based on the results, it was found that all the models except BANN showed overall good performance. The WANN model (NSE = 0.95, RMSE = 1943.15 cusecs, MAPE = 25.5, R = 0.96, DA = 46.8) shows slightly better performance than ANN, WBANN, MARS and WMARS and far better than BANN. The accuracy of the forecasts was checked between WANN and ANN, WBANN and BANN, WMARS and MARS. The results show that decomposition method improves the forecasting accuracy of time series data. Again, the simulation of the peak events was done using the above six models. The efficiency of the models was evaluated on the basis of Normalized Root Mean Square Error (NRMSE). It was found that WANN outperforms the other five models with NRMSE (0.37) for all peak events. All the other models except BANN showed fair results with NRMSE for ANN = 0.66, MARS = 0.68, WBANN = 0.68 and WMARS = 0.53. This paper presents a prototype to classify stroke that combines text mining tools and machine learning algorithms. Machine learning can be portrayed as a significant tracker in areas like surveillance, medicine, data management with the aid of suitably trained machine learning algorithms. Data mining techniques applied in this work give an overall review about the tracking of information with respect to semantic as well as syntactic perspectives. The proposed idea is to mine patients' symptoms from the case sheets and train the system with the acquired data. In the data collection phase, the case sheets of 507 patients were collected from Sugam Multispecialty Hospital, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. Next, the case sheets were mined using tagging and maximum entropy methodologies, and the proposed stemmer extracts the common and unique set of attributes to classify the strokes. Then, the processed data were fed into various machine learning algorithms such as artificial neural networks, support vector machine, boosting and bagging and random forests. Among these algorithms, artificial neural networks trained with a stochastic gradient descent algorithm outperformed the other algorithms with a higher classification accuracy of 95% and a smaller standard deviation of 14.69. This paper dispenses an exhaustive review on deep learning techniques used in the prognosis of eight different neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders such as stroke, alzheimer, parkinson's, epilepsy, autism, migraine, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis. These diseases are critical, life-threatening and in most of the cases may lead to other precarious human disorders. Deep learning techniques are emerging soft computing technique which has been lucratively used to unravel different real-life problems such as pattern recognition (Face, Emotion, and Speech), traffic management, drug discovery, disease diagnosis, and network intrusion detection. This study confers the discipline, frameworks, and methodologies used by different deep learning techniques to diagnose different human neurological disorders. Here, one hundred and thirty-six different articles related to neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders diagnosed using different deep learning techniques are studied. The morbidity and mortality rate of major neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders has also been delineated. The performance and publication trend of different deep learning techniques employed in the investigation of these diseases has been examined and analyzed. Different performance metrics like accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity have also been examined. The research implication, challenges and the future directions related to the study have also been highlighted. Eventually, the research breaches are identified and it is witnessed that there is more scope in the diagnosis of migraine, cerebral palsy and stroke using different deep learning models. Likewise, there is a potential opportunity to use and explore the performance of Restricted Boltzmann Machine, Deep Boltzmann Machine and Deep Belief Network for diagnosis of different human neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders. Western countries entertain speech recognition-based applications. It does not happen in a similar magnitude in East Asia. Language complexity could potentially be one of the primary reasons behind this lag. Besides, multilingual countries like India need to be considered so that language identification (words and phrases) can be possible through speech signals. Unlike the previous works, in this paper, we propose to use speech signal patterns for spoken language identification, where image-based features are used. The concept is primarily inspired from the fact that speech signal can be read/visualized. In our experiment, we use spectrograms (for image data) and deep learning for spoken language classification. Using the IIIT-H Indic speech database for Indic languages, we achieve the highest accuracy of 99.96%, which outperforms the state-of-the-art reported results. In this paper, we have discussed the application of the artificial neural networks in wind speed prediction. They will be used to predict the average monthly wind speed at three wind gauging stations in Gujarat, India. The wind speed data on an hourly basis are collected by NIWE (National Institute of Wind Energy) and located in the coastal areas of Western India, primarily Gujarat. The short-term and long-term data consisting of wind speeds have been considered for the period from 2015 to 2017. An artificial neural network is utilized for wind speed prediction using data measured from these stations for training and testing the given information. The data were studied using the nonlinear autoregressive models, NAR and NARX and the chaotic time series prediction models. The model is predicted using the historical data of the same station. The data are measured at a height of 100 m. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and mean average error (MAE) concerning the predicted and measured wind speed were found to be 5.09 × 10−3, 5.33 × 10−3 and 2.9 × 10−3, respectively. The results of the ANN technique were compared with the Mackey–Glass equation-based time series prediction. India being one of the major producers of fish contributes 5.5 percent of global fish production and ranks second in the world after China. The production of aquaculture mainly depends on the quality of land selected for aqua farming. Neural Network algorithms have been applied to classify the aquaculture sites based on 6 input variables viz., water, soil, support, infrastructure, input and risk factor. In this paper, the models were constructed using three Neural Network algorithms viz., Back Propagation Network (BPN), Radial Basis Function (RBF) and Linear Vector Quantization (LVQ). The models classify each aquaculture site into 3 classes viz., suitable, moderate and unsuitable. From the results of the three models, it has been found that Radial Basis Function model not only gives accurate results but also time taken for training the dataset is less when compared with the other two Neural Network models. Identifying current and future informal regions within cities remains a crucial issue for policymakers and governments in developing countries. The delineation process of identifying such regions in cities requires a lot of resources. While there are various studies that identify informal settlements based on satellite image classification, relying on both supervised or unsupervised machine learning approaches, these models either require multiple input data to function or need further development with regards to precision. In this paper, we introduce a novel method for identifying and informal settlements using street intersection data. With such minimal input data, we attempt to provide planners and policy-makers with a pragmatic tool that can aid in identifying informal zones in cities. The algorithm of the model is based on spatial statistics and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). The proposed model relies on defining informal settlements based on two ubiquitous characteristics of informal settlements. We applied the model in five major cities in Egypt and India that have spatial structures in which informality is present. These cities are Greater Cairo, Alexandria, Hurghada and Minya in Egypt, and Mumbai in India. The predictSLUMS model shows high validity and accuracy for identifying and predicting informality within the same city the model was trained on or in different ones of a similar context. Due to lack of a central bureaucrat in mobile ad hoc networks, the security of the network becomes serious issue. During malicious attacks, according to the motivation of intruder the severity of the threat varies. It may lead to loss of data, energy or throughput. This paper proposes a lightweight Intruder Node Detection and Isolation Action mechanism (INDIA) using feature extraction, feature optimization and classification techniques. The indirect and direct trust features are extracted from each node and the total trust feature is computed by combining them. The trust features are extracted from each node of MANET and these features are optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm as feature optimization technique. These optimized feature sets are then classified using Neural Networks (NN) classifier which identifies the intruder node. This paper is aimed at developing a two-stage language identification (LID) system for Northeast Indian languages. In the first stage, languages are pre-classified into tonal and non-tonal categories, and in the second stage, individual languages are identified from languages of the corresponding category. In this work, new parameters to model the prosodic characteristics of the speech signal have been proposed for pre-classification as well as individual language identification. Also, the effectiveness of spectral features, namely Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) and their combination with prosodic features, has been studied for pre-classification task. The usefulness of MFCC with their delta and acceleration coefficients in combination with prosodic features has been investigated for individual language identification. The performance of the system is analyzed for the features extracted of different analysis units, such as syllable, disyllable, word, and utterance. Comparative performance analysis of three different classifiers, namely artificial neural network (ANN), Gaussian mixture model–Universal background model (GMM–UBM), and i-vector based support vector machine (i-vector based SVM), has been made for pre-classification as well as individual language identification. A new database, NIT Silchar language database (NITS-LD), has been developed for seven NE Indian languages using All India Radio broadcast news. The experimental analysis suggests that the parameters proposed to represent the prosodic characteristics help to improve the performance of both the stages and show improvements over existing parameters by as much as 7.4%, 11.9%, and 9.1% for 30 s, 10 s, and 3 s test data, respectively, in the pre-classification stage. Of the baseline single-stage systems, GMM–UBM provides the highest accuracies of 80%, 76.8%, and 72% for 30 s, 10 s, and 3 s test data, respectively. In the proposed system, the combination of the ANN model in pre-classification stage and the GMM–UBM model in individual language identification stage provides the highest accuracies, and it shows the improvements over the baseline system by 7.2%, 7%, and 4.9% for 30 s, 10 s, and 3 s test data. The present study is a scientometric analysis of research publications on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) by Indian authors appearing in the Science Citation Index-Expanded during 1991-2014. The research output is analyzed on several parameters including total research output, its growth, rank and global publication share, activity index, relative citation impact, impact factor. It also presents the characteristics of most productive institutions, authors and high-cited papers. In the field of ANNs research, the top most prolific publishing countries are China and USA respectively. India is at 3rd position in the world with 3411 papers contributed by 5654 authors affiliated to 1025 institutions of India. The activity index suggests that India's research activity has improved greatly since 2008 onwards. Safety climate is a snapshot of the safety culture of any organization and it is dynamic in nature. It reflects the employees' perceptions and attitude towards the existing safety practices in construction projects. The main goal of this paper is to evaluate and differentiate construction projects based on their safety climate and to determine the significant constructs of a safety climate. This paper develops a model to predict safety climate in a construction project based on an artificial neural network (ANN). The important constructs for a safety climate have been determined through literature review. The constructs of safety climate are used as inputs and the safety climate of the project is used as an output for the ANN algorithm. This study collected a total of 250 responses through a questionnaire survey across the country. A three-layer feed-forward back-propagation neural network (10-18-1) has been utilized for the analysis. The developed model predicts the safety climate of a construction project reasonably well. Based on sensitivity analysis, commitment and supervisory environment are proposed as the most significant out of 10 constructs of safety climate. Moreover, projects are ranked with respect to their safety climate using this model and outlier projects could easily be identified through the normal probability technique. This research paper presents a novel sequential wavelet-artificial neural network (ANN) with embedded ANN-particle swarm optimization (PSO) for short-term day-ahead forecasting of market clearing price (MCP) in the Indian energy exchange. A precise price forecasting helps suppliers to set up bidding strategies, make investment decisions and be cautious against risks. Conversely, consumers can use price forecasting to exploit appropriate power purchasing strategies for maximum utility utilization. Here the most influential historical data, namely purchase bid and MCP, are considered for training the feed-forward back-propagation neural network. The proposed model involves three sequential phases. Initially, the raw historical data are smoothened by removing the high-frequency components using a wavelet transform method which may enable better training of neural network. Then, ANN is used to train historical patterns. More number of trials is carried out, and the final weights that give the least training error are stored. In the final phase, the stored weights that are obtained from various trials are used as the initial population for the embedded ANN-PSO model. This paper evaluates the ability of wavelet transform in improving the accuracy of artificial neural network (ANN) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy interface systems (ANFIS) models. In this study, the performance of hybrid Wavelet-ANN and Wavelet-ANFIS models for estimating daily evapotranspiration in arid regions was evaluated. Prior to the development of models, gamma test was used to identify the best input combinations that could be used under limited data scenario. Performance of the proposed hybrid models was compared to ANN, ANFIS, and conventionally used Hargreaves equation. The results revealed that use of wavelet transform as data preprocessing technique enhanced the efficiency of ANN and ANFIS models. Wavelet-ANN and Wavelet-ANFIS performed reasonably better than other models. Better handling of wavelet-decomposed input variables enabled Wavelet-ANN models to perform slightly better than the Wavelet-ANFIS models. W-ANN2 (RMSE = 0.632 mm/day and R = 0.96) was found to be the best model for estimating daily evapotranspiration in arid regions. The proposed W-ANN2 model used second-level db3 wavelet-decomposed subseries of temperature and previous day evapotranspiration values as inputs. The present paper reports a study, where growing hierarchical self-organising map (GHSOM) has been applied to achieve a visual cluster analysis to the Indian rainfall dataset consisting of 142 years of Indian rainfall data so that the yearly rainfall can be segregated into small groups to visualise the pattern of clustering behaviour of yearly rainfall due to changes in monthly rainfall for each year. Indian monsoon is an important climatic phenomenon and a global climatic marker. Both statistical and numerical prediction schemes for Indian monsoon have been widely studied in literature. Statistical schemes are mainly based on regression or neural networks. However, the variability of monsoon is significant over the years and a single model is often inadequate. Meteorologists revise their models on different years based on prevailing global climatic incidents like El-Niño. These indices often have degree of severity associated with them. In this paper, we cluster the monsoon years based on their fuzzy degree of associativity to these climatic event patterns. Next, we develop individual prediction models for the year clusters. To combat the recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), academician and clinician are in search of new approaches to predict the COVID-19 outbreak dynamic trends that may slow down or stop the pandemic. Epidemiological models like Susceptible–Infected–Recovered (SIR) and its variants are helpful to understand the dynamics trend of pandemic that may be used in decision making to optimize possible controls from the infectious disease. But these epidemiological models based on mathematical assumptions may not predict the real pandemic situation. Recently the new machine learning approaches are being used to understand the dynamic trend of COVID-19 spread. In this paper, we designed the recurrent and convolutional neural network models: vanilla LSTM, stacked LSTM, ED_LSTM, BiLSTM, CNN, and hybrid CNN+LSTM model to capture the complex trend of COVID-19 outbreak and perform the forecasting of COVID-19 daily confirmed cases of 7, 14, 21 days for India and its four most affected states (Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu). The root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) evaluation metric are computed on the testing data to demonstrate the relative performance of these models. Social Networking Sites have significant potential to reveal valuable explicit as well as implicit statistics and patterns when deep learning is applied to their raw and unstructured data. Tweets posted by the users on their timeline not only reflect their mindset, their likes and dislikes but could also be used to unveil significant amount of information about many psychological aspects and behavior that may be hard to study directly. This paper aims to predict the personality of the 100 real-time Twitter users conforming to personality traits in the BIG 5 model by extracting features from their tweets using ensemble of CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) and BiLSTM (Bidirectional Long Short Memory). The findings of our experiment shows that our model performs slightly better than previous baselines methods achieving an accuracy 75.134% on testing data. We have further hypothesized that unrestricted data available on Twitter may contain features that can be used to predict the personality of its user. It was concluded that personality of Twitter users in the real world is reflected in their online behaviour, reinforcing the premise that the nature of online interactions does not significantly differ from that of real-world interactions. The two main challenges of predicting the wind speed depend on various atmospheric factors and random variables. This paper explores the possibility of developing a wind speed prediction model using different Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Categorical Regression empirical model which could be used to estimate the wind speed in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India using SPSS software. An attempt is made in this paper to report how a supervised methodology has been adopted for the task of Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) in Bengali with necessary modifications. At the initial stage, four commonly used supervised methods, Decision Tree (DT), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Naïve Bayes (NB), are developed at the baseline. These algorithms are applied individually on a data set of 13 most frequently used Bengali ambiguous words. On experimental basis, the baseline strategy is modified with two extensions: (a) inclusion of lemmatization process into the system and (b) bootstrapping of the operational process. As a result, the levels of accuracy of the baseline methods are slightly improved, which is a positive signal for the whole process of disambiguation as it opens scope for further modification of the existing method for better result. Peak ground motions and spectral accelerations estimated from the prediction equations are highly significant in earthquake hazard studies. Recently, these predictive relationships developed for higher-order parameters obtained paramount importance as they describe different ground motion characteristics. The northeastern region of India experiences extreme seismicity due to the Indian plate subduction under the South Asian plate. However, only a few ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) are available for such tectonic environments due to insufficient ground motion data. In this regard, it is noticed that the tectonic environment experienced by New Zealand is similar to that of northeast India. So, in this paper, two GMPE models for New Zealand are developed with the help of the artificial neural network (ANN) technique using the GeoNet database. Model-1 corresponds to various higher-order parameters, whereas model-2 developed for spectral accelerations (S a) between 0.01 and 5s. Further, these models are compared against global and region-specific GMPEs. The developed models shows good agreement with other GMPEs and the data but slightly over predicts at distances greater than 300 km. Additional consideration of site-to-site variability in the current models reduced the total standard deviations of model-1 by 19–22 % and model-2 by 20%–23 %. Time-series modeling forms an important area of research in geophysics. Time-series models can be linear, like linear state-space models or non-linear, like artificial neural networks. One way to judge the goodness of different models associated with a given time-series is to assess the prediction capabilities of these models. Some of the important techniques used in time-series forecasting are: (i) Minimum mean squared error (MMSE) forecast obtained using conditional means of ARIMA(p,d,q) models, (ii) Kalman filter approach and (iii) Artificial neural networks (ANN) approach. However, the wavelet-based versions of these techniques, respectively denoted as W-MMSE, W-Kalman and W-ANN, rather than the original techniques themselves, have been found to possess better capabilities in forecasting the highly nonlinear geophysical data. Using the original and predicted data, these observations have been validated by determining the RMSE (root mean squared error) and correlation coefficients between them. The prediction capabilities of both versions of the above techniques are tested on (i) the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) data, (ii) the daily average rainfall data and (iii) the gamma-ray log data from an offshore oil well, off the west coast of India. The TEC and daily average rainfall data sets designate as examples of data with very high correlations pertaining over very large lags. They also have a strong seasonality component associated with them. However, the gamma-ray log data sets show no seasonality component and have no trends associated with them. Therefore, the choice of different nonlinear data sets having diverse sources of their origins are apt to test the forecasting capabilities of these techniques. It has been observed that W-ANN gives the best prediction, when compared with the other algorithms discussed in this paper. This is believed to be due to the use of non-linear activation function by ANNs to produce regression that results in capturing the inherent non-linear dynamics of the process effectively. The results also show the usefulness of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) coefficients as training features for both linear and non-linear forecasting approaches. The better performance of the wavelet-based forecasting algorithms can be attributed to the fact that DWT coefficients are wide-sense stationary sequences. Investigations of changing the flow regime and flow prediction are of vital societal and hydro-ecological importance in a transboundary river like Punarbhaba river between India and Bangladesh. The present paper investigated flow regime though advance periodicity models (Morlet's wavelet transformation) at the seasonal scale. Flow prediction using advanced machine learning techniques like Support vector machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Hybrid wavelet ANN (W-ANN), Random forest(RF) capturing the periodicity, duration, cyclic or semi-cyclic nature of flow wave or wavelet from the historical time series data (1978–2017) is very crucial for environmental flow management and estimating present and future states of environmental flow. Flow alteration modeling (using heat map) and estimation of environmental flow (using duration curve shifting and RVA methods) are another vital objectives of this work to know the present and future hydro-ecological state. The result of periodicity clearly identified two distinct flow regimes before and after 1992-93 triggered by damming over there in 1992. All the prediction models identified the declining trend of flow in all the seasons, however hybrid wavelet ANN model could be treated as the best suited because of its very high-performance level. The degree of hydrological alteration is identified very high in the post-hydrological alteration (PHA) (post-1992) period and it is likely to be intensified predicted period. The estimated environmental flow state in PHA falls under moderate to critically modified states but if alteration goes on in this way ecological deficit will be the obvious result. It can eventually lead to vision loss. The early detection of DR prevents the cause of blindness. In this paper, we propose the retinal image segmentation and extraction of blood vessels by morphological processing, thresholding, edge detection, and adaptive histogram equalization. For the automatic diagnosis of DR from the fundus image, we also developed a network with the convolutional neural network architecture for accurately classifying its severity. By using high-end graphical processor unit (GPU), we trained this network on the publicly available dataset such as DRIVE, DIARETDB0, and DIARETDB1_v1, and the images collected from the Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, India. Our proposed CNN achieves a sensitivity of 98%, a specificity of 93%, and an accuracy of 96.9% containing a database of 854 images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
