Vincenzo Virginio was born in 1752 in the city of Cuneo in Piedmont. He got a degree in ecclesiastical and civil law in Turin, as it was the tradition of his family. Agronomy, however, was his first choice and passion. A big altruist and philanthropist, he was deeply moved by the poverty and famine that often befell the population of Piedmont in the second half of the eighteenth century, so he decided to use his talent and financial resources to overcome prejudices against planting and consuming potatoes. His work made him famous, but it also completely drained his financial resources. Hence, in 1807 he accepted the invitation of Vincenzo Dandolo, general governor of Dalmatia, to come to Zadar and help him in his efforts to advance agriculture and provision supply of the people in Dalmatia. This paper represents an initial step in testing the correlation between corruption and state capture on the one side and emigration as a consequence on the other. The study is based on our qualitative and quantitative research conducted in Germany on a sample of 1734 recently emigrated Croatians from 2016 to 2020 and on our new research on corruption and clientelism as a push factor for emigration from Croatia. The primary hypothesis is that migration and corruption trends are correlated and that with the growth of the emigration of young workers from Croatia, the corruption rate in the country increases even more. The second part of the research was conducted on a sample of small, medium and large companies throughout Croatia. Requests to participate were sent to 2500 companies in all Croatian counties, and 178 companies responded. The questions intended to assess so-called “state capture” in Croatia according to a concept developed by Hellman et al. (2000). We measured the capture of the judiciary, the executive and the legislature in the Republic of Croatia and the perception of bribery, corruption and clientelism in companies. Results: nepotism 71%, bribery 66%, rigging public tenders 93% significantly disrupt business. Companies rate the Government, Parliament and the judiciary as the worst public services. As many as 59% of companies believe that the Croatian judiciary is corrupt. Among the measures that companies unconditionally support are the revision of transformation and privatisation (82%) and the examination of the origin of assets (76%). The study results undoubtedly show that Croatia is even more corrupt today (2022) than it was as a non-EU member. The opening of borders has certainly facilitated emigration from Croatia, but this paper shows that emigration would not be so intense if the state and the society were not “captured”. Purpose. The objective of this research is to explore if and in what way Croatian public libraries mark Banned Books Week, an event that celebrates the freedom to read, usually in the last week of September. Approach/methodology/design. First, by searching the websites of the libraries as well as their Facebook profiles, we identified the libraries that celebrate Banned Books Week. In addition, Google was also searched according to the precisely defined keywords. Furthermore, a content analysis of the identified news and announcements was carried out. The research was first conducted in October 2021, and then repeated at the end of September and the beginning of October 2022. The goal was to determine if any new public libraries have commemorated this event in the meantime. Findings. The research has shown that only twenty Croatian public libraries (out of 234) celebrated Banned Books Week, which is only 8.55% of all public libraries. The oldest posted news available online about the celebration of this event in Croatia dates back to 2011, which leads us to the conclusion that Banned Books Week has only been celebrated for the last ten years, and often without continuity. The event has been cele- brated usually very modestly, with only a few examples that are more creative. From the above, it can be concluded that Banned Books Week in Croatian public libraries is still not celebrated to a greater extent, and that this project has not fully taken root. Limitations. Since the total number of libraries in Croatia is very large it would be difficult to cover all libraries in one research, so this research has been limited to public libraries only. In addition, it is very likely that neither the selected ways of identifying libraries that celebrate Banned Books Week nor the chosen search strategies are the only possible ones. Practical use. The paper presents various possibilities and ways of celebrating this event. It is also an invitation to other libraries to join in the celebration of freedom of reading and open access to information. Social significance. The paper points to the important role of public libraries, as well as libraries in general, in the fight against censorship of the written word, advocating the idea of freedom of reading and intellectual freedom in general, and thus emphasizes their role in building and development of a democratic society. Originality/value. The value of the paper lies in the fact that it presents the research of a topic that is insufficiently represented in Croatia. he article focuses on social democracy in Croatia and on electoral demand in the context of the general crisis and declining political support for social democracy. The paper seeks to contribute to the understanding of the state of social democracy in Croatia, by examining the relationship between voter ideological self-identification and party preferences regarding social democracy and voting for the SDP. The analysis uses data obtained through field surveys from 1999 to 2020, to identify factors that influence social democratic voters to vote for the party that represents this political ideology – the SDP. The paper tests a generalized linear mixed model in which survey years are treated as random effects. Self-identification on the left-right scale, as well as the attitude on abortion are found to be significant factors explaining why some social democrats vote for the SDP and others do not, with SDP voters leaning towards more left-wing positions and being more likely to support a woman’s free choice on abortion when compared to other social democratic voters. The random effect of survey years has shown low variability, but the amplification of the impact of the fixed effects is evident for 2003 and 2012, where we can see fragmentation and consolidation, respectively, of social democratic voter support for SDP. This paper examines early language learning (ELL) in Croatia, drawing context from broader European policies, recommendations, and research. It explores Croatia’s tradition, research, and practices in ELL within early childhood education and care institutions. The core analysis focuses on data from 2008 to 2023, examining foreign language programs in Croatian kindergartens (KGs). This includes the number of KGs offering programs, the languages available, and children’s participation. The research reveals a growing interest in early language exposure throughout Croatia. By analyzing trends over 14 years, the paper establishes how program offerings and participation rates have evolved. These findings offer valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers in the field of ELL. Additionally, the research discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing effective early language learning programs in Croatia.

The paper analyzes the articles published in the Journal Safety by using the basic bibliometric indicators. The sample consisted of 250 categorized articles published over a ten year period, from 2005 until 2015. The analysis has shown that the most common articles were review papers (32.4%), then professional papers (32%), original scientific papers (25.2%), preliminary notes (9.2%), conference papers (0.8%) and professional views (0.4%). Most articles were written in the Croatian language (90%) indicating a regional character of the Journal. Journal Safety is included in the multidisciplinary bibliographic and citation database Scopus from vol. 51, 2009, multidisciplinary database Academic Search Complete (ASC) from EBSCO Corps-led database of 50 vol. 2008. The paper presents photographic material from the fonds of the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which was established by the decision of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia on 7 July 2014, and began to operate in March 2015. The Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy was conceived as an institution where the public would continuously become acquainted with the development of medical sciences, discoveries in that field, and their application, based on both material and non-material heritage. The initial core of the museum’s collection consists of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy Collection—transferred from the Division for the History of Medical Sciences—which is continuously enriched with new donations. Today, the museum’s collection encompasses a diverse range of medical and pharmaceutical heritage materials, totalling more than 6,000 items, which are categorised into 15 collections. The goal of the paper is to present thematic sections within the Collection of Photographs of the Croatian Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts that reflect Štampar’s ideology in terms of content and purpose. The selected sample consists of the legacies of Croatian physicians Lujo Thaller (1891–1949) and Vladimir Ćepulić (1891–1964), the former Croatian Museum of Healthcare History founded at the Croatian Medical Association in Zagreb, and the National Health Club. This material represents material testimony about public health projects, social medical research, field work and health education in Croatia during the time of Andrija Štampar’s activities and several decades later. With its content, the collection contributes to preserving the memory of the specific social medical model of the development of Croatian healthcare and forms a potent starting point for further interpretations and presentations of Štampar’s work.
