Intersex people suffer human rights abuses and harms because of non-consensual early medical interventions. They have historically been rendered outside of welfare regimes and equality, diversity and inclusion policies, or forcibly subsumed within sex-binaried institutions. This article draws on critical intersex studies to interrogate the policy silences and collusions that have taken place regarding intersex people's suffering. Using Ireland and England as case studies, we show that current formations of equality and diversity policies are inadequate in relation to intersex issues. Analysis of policy documents from Ireland and the UK using Bacchi's method reveals the erasure and/or marginalisation of intersex people, despite some stated commitments to gender and sexual equality. We conclude that there is a pressing need for social policy work around intersex issues and for reform to support intersex people's equality, diversity and inclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the paper is to assess open disclosure in Ireland following clinical adverse events in healthcare. A number of areas were examined from the patient's and healthcare team's perspectives. The barriers/constraints to open disclosure, the extent of policies, procedures or guidelines that are available for staff to consult with, inclusive of how they are implemented, harvested valuable insight. The supports available for healthcare staff following an adverse event and patients' expectations after such an event are also encompassed to include the relationship open disclosure has on concerns regarding litigious intent. The questionnaire was disseminated to a multidisciplinary healthcare group. The questions were numbered 1-9, with a mixture of open and closed questions. A five-point Likert format was used with three questions in attitudinal/ opinion statements, regarding supports available for staff following an adverse event. A Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used to assist with the interpretation of data. This study was directed at the multidisciplinary healthcare team and senior management within the Health Service Executive (HSE) and Voluntary sectors. The oldest hospitals in Ireland are voluntary public hospitals some of them originating from the 18th century, having been established by charities and religious orders. Voluntary hospitals are partly funded by the HSE, specifically having their own governance structure. There was a response rate of 67% (n ¼ 192). A total 56.5% of respondents stated their organization did not have an open disclosure policy, procedure or guideline in place however, 16% of the attendees stated there was one in place. A total of 54.4% (104) acknowledged barriers/concerns surrounding open disclosure, with fear of litigious intent noted by 24% of respondents. A total of 52.3% (101) identified support availability to staff following an adverse event, 38.9% (10) felt there was little/no follow-up support, with 11.1.% (2) stating they were made to feel guilty, and associated it with being "on trial". Findings demonstrate an unstructured approach to disclosure of adverse events in Ireland, with fear of litigation a major concern for healthcare professionals. Error awareness among the general public, the introduction of protective legislation and implementation of a national standard on open disclosure in conjunction with practical training and education will all positively and practically influence open disclosure of adverse events in Ireland. River basins in Great Britain and Ireland have been characterized by periods of hillslope and valley floor instability during the Holocene, reflecting sensitivity to both climate change and anthropogenic disturbance. In contrast to climatic controls, which have been relatively well documented, human impacts on and interactions with river basins remain unclear. There is now, however, a growing impetus to elucidate more fully the impact of anthropogenic activity on sediment supply and runoff, given that land-use change is thought to have exacerbated recent flooding in the UK (eg, the 'Millennium' floods of 2000). The aim of this paper is to critically review the significance of Holocene land use on hillslope and valley floor stability in Great Britain and Ireland. The most widely reported impacts of land-use change on geomorphic activity include hillslope erosion and gully development, valley floor alluviation, river channel incision and elevated water tables. In the majority of cases, however, causal relationships are difficult to establish, due primarily to inadequate dating control. Even where geomorphic instability can be linked to land-use change, it is apparent that eroded material is often stored as colluvium, which together with evidence of diachronus hillslope and valley floor instability, raises important questions and identifies uncertainties regarding the dynamics and extent of sediment transfer within river basins. In this paper we examine a wide range of employee voice mechanisms from a total of 18 case studies from the UK and Republic of Ireland. We examine how voice is defined by managers and how they link voice with improved economic efficiency. The evidence suggests that employee voice is more extensive in terms of its‘scope’ and‘impact’ than a decade ago, although the‘level’ at which employees have a say remains the preserve of managerial control. The evidence also suggests that the link between voice and organisational performance is problematic. The conclusion argues that organisations now face a diffuse and persistent range of concerns from highly articulate employees. This article addresses debates in contemporary industrial relations about practical application of pluralism. We compare the potential efficacy of 'radical-pluralism' and 'neo-pluralism'. Data comes from analysis of employment relationships in two unionised public transport sector organisations, in the comparative country contexts of the UK and Republic of Ireland. It is argued that radical-pluralist framing of the employment relationship is better equipped than neo-pluralism to provide deeper and contextually sensitive understandings of the realities of unequal employment relationships. Desired (pluralist) democratic values differ from real world application of joint regulation (praxis). This raises implications regarding constraints on state regulation and public policy goals institutionalising pluralism as fluid and uneven praxis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article introduces a special issue of Work, Employment and Society on solidarities in and through the experience of work in an age of austerity and political polarisation. It commences by discussing the renaissance of studies of solidarity in the workplace – and beyond. Debates on solidarity as a concept are reviewed in relation to moral economy, labour organising-mobilisation, emotional labour and public sociology. Each of the special issue articles assess the value of the solidarity concept under contemporary conditions. Between them they explore solidarity among gig economy delivery riders (Italy and UK), special needs teachers (England), volunteer lifeboat crews (UK and Ireland) and international 'social factory' activists. Two articles examine solidarity within organised labour: first, internationalism among dock workers and second, North American police unions' construction of a divisive 'blue solidarity'. This article disaggregates high- and low-status care work across eight liberal welfare regimes: Australia, Canada, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Using Luxembourg Income Study data, descriptive and multivariate analyses provide support for a 'migrant in the market' model of employment, notwithstanding variation across countries. The data demonstrate a wage penalty in both high- and low-status care employment in several liberal welfare regimes, with the latter (service jobs in health, education and social work) more likely to be part-time and situated in the private sector. Migrant care workers are found to work disproportionately in low-status, low-wage types of care and, in some cases, to incur additional wage penalties compared to native-born care workers with equivalent human capital. Ireland, the UK and the USA are heterogeneous examples of liberal worlds of welfare capitalism yet all three countries were deeply implicated in the 2008 global financial crisis. Examining these three countries together provides the opportunity to further develop an international comparative political economy of instability in the context of the globalised and financialised dimensions of Anglo-liberal capitalism and disciplinary governance. Our analysis is guided by the concept of disciplinary neoliberalism (Gill, 1995) through which we explore: (i) the dynamics that have shaped the impacts of and responses to the Great Recession; (ii) the ways in which state-market relations, shaped by differentiated accommodations to market imperative or market discipline, have been used as disciplinary tools and how these have interacted with existing social divisions and iii) the implications for shaping conditions for resistance. We suggest that the neoliberal pathways of each country, whilst not uniform, mark a 'step-change' and acceleration in the operation of disciplinary neoliberalism, and is particularly evident in what we identify as the coercive commodification of social policy. As technology continues to improve and become more intertwined with our everyday activities, more and more opportunities present themselves for using technology to enhance the work that we do. This article outlines the introduction of Samsung smartphones to a large number of the Department of Corrections’ workforce, as well as giving details on two applications that are being used to improve the day-to-day operations and safety of our community corrections staff in New Zealand. In early 2014, The New Zealand Department of Corrections rolled out Samsung smartphones to over 3000 staff, to aid them with their day-to-day work operations. The idea behind providing staff with smartphones was to allow staff to use their work email and calendar on-the-go, as well as to access the internet when out of the office. A digital revolution is upon our penal system – the inevitability of digital transformation is set to shape the way justice is done and experienced. This article identifies some important considerations for digital transformation in prison settings. There are some small yet very promising initiatives in many jurisdictions, and in these early stages of introducing digital technologies for prisoners and staff to use there are still some fundamental barriers. Therefore getting it right within the secure landscape brings further challenges for services. Older adult care in Ireland and the UK has seen substantial recruitment of migrant registered nurses and care assistants. However, there is little information on recruitment methods in this sector and on how the current immigration systems influence these strategies. This article aims to address this topic through a survey of care organizations and interviews with employers and migrant carers in Ireland and the UK. Recruitment of migrant carers is based on a combination of conventional approaches, informal networks and recruitment agencies. Choice of strategy is dependent on occupation type and the targeted labour pools. Findings demonstrate that immigration regulations effectively dictate the recruitment pools and shape employer recruitment methods. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Feminist news researchers have long argued that in the macho culture of most newsrooms, journalists’ daily decisions about what is newsworthy remain firmly based on masculine news values. As such, issues and topics traditionally seen to be particularly relevant to women tend to be pushed to the margins of the news where the implicit assumption is that they are less important than those which interest men. In so doing, men’s views and voices are privileged over women’s, thereby contributing to the ongoing secondary status of women’s participation as citizens. In this article, we draw upon data we collected from the UK and the Republic of Ireland as part of the larger, 108-country study, which comprised the 2010 Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP). We argue that while there have been some positive improvements in women’s representation as news actors, sources and journalists in the British and Irish news media since the first GMMP day of monitoring in 1995, women’s voices, experiences and expertise continue to be regarded by news industries as less important than those of men. Such a situation undermines and under-reports women’s contribution to social, economic and cultural life and in so doing, diminishes democracy. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This article is less concerned with the weaknesses of the old anthropological idea of culture than with how and why, despite these weaknesses, it has retained such influence with the liberal state. It approaches these questions using a case study in the management of conflict: the peace process in Ireland and the agreement reached ten years ago on Good Friday 1998. According to some, the model on which the Good Friday Agreement (GFA) is based - usually referred to as consociational—has become the default position of the international community when it comes to the management of conflict. In line with consociational principles, the GFA accords cultural rights to two specific communities—something that is at odds with the traditional liberal idea that rights accrue to individuals. Focusing on several key debates, the article traces the influence of ideas about culture and identity on the peace process. Crucial here is that the 'old' idea of culture justifies a conflation of individual and collective, communal identity such that the former is understood as dependent on the latter. The respect that liberalism traditionally accords to the individual is thereby extended to the group of which s/he is a member. Finally, considering the role of anthropologists in the Irish case, the article concludes by querying what it is that is specifically anthropological about the old idea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
