Professor Margaret Archer is a leading critical realist and major contemporary social theorist. This edited collection seeks to celebrate the scope and accomplishments of her work, distilling her theoretical and empirical contributions into four sections which capture the essence and trajectory of her research over almost four decades. Long fascinated with the problem of structure and agency, Archer's work has constituted a decade-long engagement with this perennial issue of social thought. However, in spite of the deep interconnections that unify her body of work, it is rarely treated as a coherent whole. This is doubtless in part due to the unforgiving rigour of her arguments and prose, but also a byproduct of sociology's ongoing compartmentalisation. This edited collection seeks to address this relative neglect by collating a selection of papers, spanning Archer's career, which collectively elucidate both the development of her thought and the value that can be found in it as a systematic whole. This book illustrates the empirical origins of her social ontology in her early work on the sociology of education, as well as foregrounding the diverse range of influences that have conditioned her intellectual trajectory: the systems theory of Walter Buckley, the neo-Weberian analysis of Lockwood, the critical realist philosophy of Roy Bhaskar and, more recently, her engagement with American pragmatism and the Italian school of relational sociology. What emerges is a series of important contributions to our understanding of the relationship between structure, culture and agency. Acting to introduce and guide readers through these contributions, this book carries the potential to inform exciting and innovative sociological research.

Jede große Transformation in der Geschichte der Menschheit wurde bisher von einer kulturellen Revolution ausgelöst und begleitet. Sie hat die Gesellschaft in eine Polykrise geführt, es droht ein Zivilisationskollaps. Die zweite Transformation ist jene zur Nachhaltigkeit, die sich an „Visionen einer anderen Entwicklung“ jenseits von Wachstum und Massenkonsum orientiert. Diese beiden Transformationen verdrängen sich an einigen Stellen gegenseitig und vermischen sich an anderen. Einerseits ist es die schwächere Transformation, die oft assimiliert wird. So werden derzeit eine „ökologische Modernisierung“ und ein „nachhaltiges Wachstum“ theorisiert, obwohl solche Ansätze Widersprüche an sich sind. Andererseits ist die soziale und ökologische Umwelt ein politisches Subjekt, das immer stärker in Dynamiken und Debatten mitmischt. So oder so wird sich an den Reibungsflächen zwischen den beiden Transformationen entscheiden, wie sich die Transformation zur Nachhaltigkeit am Ende durchsetzt: by Disaster or by Design.

This book presents the first systematic study of the 100-year history of translation, research, reception, and influence of Central and Eastern European literature in China from the late Qing Dynasty to the end of the twentieth century. This study of Eastern European literature from the perspective of Sino-foreign literary relations is based on extensive research into the translation and reception of Central and Eastern European writers such as Milan Kundera, Sándor Petőfi, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Julius Fucik, and Bertolt Brecht. Since the late nineteenth century, the major Chinese writers have paid special attention to the literature of the marginalized Eastern European nations when they have to translate from translations since few of them understand Eastern European languages. The book seeks to identify what attracted the founders of new Chinese literature to Eastern European literature and to define its unique significance for the construction of modern Chinese literature.

This book is a deep dive into the largely unexplored space of BBW “bashes”—multi-day gatherings of fat women and their admirers. Using a range of feminist theories of embodiment and affect, the project is guided by autoethnography and in-depth interviews with twelve participants. Participant experiences are first analyzed with a key focus on experiences that cause grief and disenfranchisement; subsequently, the book looks at experiences that may be radical or revelatory. The book does not seek to either villainize or valorize BBW spaces but instead sheds a bright light on the experience of this cultural subspace and all it may offer to analyses of fat life.

This book explores the careers, professional trajectories and legal cultures of judges in the federal judiciary in Mexico. So far, there has been limited research on internal factors contributing to the understanding of judicial power dynamics in Mexico and other Latin American countries at large; this Work fills an important gap in the literature through its empirical investigation of internal legal cultures and judicial norms, offering new data, measurement strategies,and insights into the interactions between law, politics, norms, legal culture(s), as well as judicial behavior. Utilising an original survey, the chapters analyse judicial conceptualizations of role norms, legal cultures, proclivities for judicial activism, and judicial behavior. In so doing, this book contributes to understanding of underlying key internal factors of judicial activism or restraint, in turn moving forward the debate that seeks to explain judicial behavior reliant on internal and ideational perspectives. Complementing limited but existing studies of judicial politics in Mexico through its analysis of judges beyond those that sit at the Supreme Court, this book will be of particular interest to Latin-American judicial politics scholars due to its focus on the judicial power from internal perspectives as well as sub-national judges, filling a void in the literature vis-à-vis the study of courts in Latin America. This book analyzes the culture wars as those struggles for the monopoly of the legitimate representation of the world in the normative elucidation of controversial issues linked to values. Public culture in this context would consist of a set of complex classificatory systems of symbols and meanings that constitute a semantic field in permanent dynamic tension. In this work we analyze a whole series of lines of cultural conflict such as the social and semantic genesis of the different forms of “culture war” from the thesis of “modern polytheism” pointed out by Max Weber at the beginning of the 20th century to the national culture wars and the current global culture wars; the social production of truth and the clash with the epistemological tribalisms; the struggles between the new warrior gods, daimons and demons that emerge in modern societies; the struggles of fusion and fission on the symbolic battlefield of “Europe”; the struggles between “pioneers” and “gatekeepers” to define the limits of human nature; the struggles between utopias and dystopias that colonize the present future. This book examines the changing significance of intra-European labor mobility in the 21st century. The focus is on the driving forces, the labor market effects and the regulation of this mobility. It is shown that there is a demand for workers with different qualifications in the'post-industrial'societies of Western Europe. This demand is primarily met by migration from the enlarged EU. However, this is no longer traditional labor migration, but the mobility of EU citizens. This brings with it new opportunities, but also challenges in a transnational mobility space, which is also a space of inequality.

This open access book adopts a cultural sociology of materiality to explore the hallmark of the female athlete: the ponytail. Studying a wealth of news articles about ponytails in sports and society, Broch uncovers this hairstyle's polyvocality and argues that it is a total social phenomenon. By separating his approach from the cultural studies tradition, Broch highlights how hair is imbued with codes, narratives, and myth that allow its wearers to understand, maneuver, and criticize social gender relations in deeply personal ways. Using multiple theories about hair, bodies, myths, and icons, he creates a multidimensional method to show how icons are imitated and used. As women navigate their practical lives, health issues, and gendered expectations, the ponytail materializes their dynamic maneuvering of cultural and social environments. Sporting a ponytail—itself an embodiment of movement—is filled with a performativity of social movements: a cultural kinetics that is never apolitical.

Das Handbuch ist das erste im deutschsprachigen Raum, in dem Geschichte, Theorie und Praxisfelder der Öffentlichen Soziologie umrissen werden. Damit wird einerseits an die Tradition der Public Sociology angeknüpft, andererseits aber auf die Relevanz einer kritisch reflektierenden Soziologie verwiesen, die ihre Bezugspunkte auch außerhalb der Disziplin findet.

Diese Aufsatzsammlung beschäftigt sich vornehmlich mit der Frage, unter welchen Bedingungen die Erfahrung gemacht wird, dass typische Verbraucherrollen, ob Käufer-, Kunden- oder Konsumentenrolle, in kommerziell organisierten Kauf- oder Konsumsituationen unangefochten ausgespielt werden können und den Interaktionsverlauf strukturell wie prozessual wesentlich bestimmen. Denn keineswegs überall, wo Kauf- oder Verbrauchsakte empirisch stattfinden, definieren diese die jeweilige Situation auch in Gänze, so dass nahezu sämtliche Aufmerksamkeit durch die damit verbundenen, kommerziell orientierten Erlebnisse und Handlungen physisch, psychisch und sozial okkupiert wird, bei weitgehender Neutralisierung aller sonstigen Rollenverpflichtungen. Immerhin müssen sich Verbraucherrollen angesichts einer funktional differenzierten Gesellschaft, in der das ständige Management einer Vielzahl von Publikumsrollen unausweichlich ist, die knapp bemessene Aufmerksamkeitsspanne mit zahlreichen weiteren Publikumsrollen teilen. Im Kern geht es bei diesem Konzept darum, kommerziell organisierte Settings zu identifizieren, die wie Gerichte, Kirchen, Klöster, Krankenhäuser, Schulen, Sportstadien usw., bei denen die jeweiligen Inklusionseffekte eine temporäre Transformation der Personen in Folge der Übernahme entsprechender Publikumsrollen auslösen können – nicht zu vergessen temporäre Transformationseffekte im Zuge der aktiven Partizipation an Zeugenvernehmungen, Gottesdiensten, Fastenritualen, Krankenbehandlungen, Unterrichtseinheiten, Sportwettbewerben usw. – funktional Äquivalentes bei der Ausübung von Verbraucherrollen bewerkstelligen. Als prototypisch für solche kommerziell organisierten Settings, hier verkürzt als ‚Verbraucherbühnen‘ bezeichnet, werden in der Konsum- und Serviceforschung übrigens die Freizeitparks der Walt Disney Company behandelt. Dabei erfordert die Erforschung solcher Verbraucherbühnen eine Kombination von Rollen-, Organisations- und Interaktionsanalysen, zudem eine kultur- und mediensoziologische Perspektive, wie sie für das Studium von Verbraucherleitbildern empfehlenswert erscheint. Denn wie schon die soziologische Rollentheorie festgestellt hatte, orientieren sich Rollenspiele immer an gewissen Images, Rationalitätsfiktionen, Stereotypen, d. h. Normen des Rollenverhaltens, die Richtung und Reichweite typischen Rollenverhaltens vorschreiben und anleiten.

This book provides a novel approach to the understanding and realization of the values of art. It argues that art has often been instrumentalized for state-building, to promote social inclusion of diversity, or for economic purposes such as growth or innovation. To counteract that, the authors study the values that artists and audiences seek to realize in the social practices around the arts. They develop the concept of cultural civil society to analyze how art is practiced and values are realized in creative circles and co-creative communities of spectators. The insights are illustrated with case-studies about hip-hop, Venetian art collectives, dance festivals, science-fiction fandom, and a queer museum. The authors provide a four-stage scheme that illustrates how values are realized in a process of value orientation, imagination, realization, and evaluation.The book relies on an interdisciplinary approach rooted in economics and sociology of the arts, with an appreciation forbroader social theories. It integrates these disciplines in a pragmatic approach based on the work of John Dewey and more recent neo-pragmatist work to recover the critical and constructive role that cultural civil society plays in a plural and democratic society. The authors conclude with a new perspective on cultural policy, centered around state neutrality towards the arts and aimed at creating a legal and social framework in which social practices around the arts can flourish and co-exist peacefully.

Wir sind inmitten eines radikalen Wandels der Gesellschaft: Wie wird er stattfinden? Wer den Kollaps abwenden will, muss zuerst die Beschaffenheit der „Großen Transformation“ begreifen, die dazu führt. Weil Probleme niemals mit denselben Rezepten gelöst werden können, durch die sie entstanden sind, kann noch „mehr Fortschritt wagen“ keine Antwort sein: Ein Systemwechsel wird dringend benötigt, sprich eine Transformation der Gesellschaft zur Nachhaltigkeit. Einerseits meint Nachhaltigkeit Widerstands- und Anpassungsfähigkeit (Resilienz), andererseits ein „gutes Leben“, das nicht auf Kosten anderer geht – künftige Generationen inbegriffen. Jede große Transformation in der Geschichte der Menschheit wurde bisher von einer kulturellen Revolution ausgelöst. Dieses Buch zeigt, warum dies auch für die zur Nachhaltigkeit gilt. Als DNA der Gesellschaft regelt die Kultur unser Verhältnis zur Umwelt, deshalb setzt die Überwindung der Klimakrise eine kulturelle Evolution voraus. So wie eine ökonomische Monokultur die Krisenanfälligkeit erhöht, ist es die kulturelle Vielfalt als Möglichkeit von Alternativen, die soziale Systeme resilienter macht. Die Transformation zur Nachhaltigkeit benötigt eine Demokratisierung der Demokratie und kann als individueller und kollektiver Lernprozess im Lokalen gestaltet werden, unter anderem durch Reallabore. This open access book suggests new ways of reading nineteenth-century African American literature environmentally. Combining insights from ecocriticism, African American studies, and Foucauldian theory, Matthias Klestil examines forms of environmental knowledge in African American writing ranging from antebellum slave narratives and pamphlets to Charlotte Forten's journals, Booker T. Washington's autobiographies, and Charles W. Chesnutt's short fiction. The volume highlights how literary forms of environmental knowledge in the African American tradition were shaped by the histories of slavery and race, mainstream environmental writing traditions, and African American forms of expression and intertextuality. Turning to the Underground Railroad, debates over education and home-building, and the aesthetics of the pastoral and the georgic, Environmental Knowledge, Race, and African American Literature provides an original perspective on the African American ecoliterary traditionthat uncovers new facets of canonical and understudied texts and offers new directions for ecocriticism and African American studies.

In diesem Buch wird das Verständnis von Interkulturalität und interkultureller Kompetenz bei einem Automobilkonzern erforscht. Dafür wurden Experteninterviews mit Führungskräften des gehobenen Managements durchgeführt. Die Interviews wurden mit der Qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse nach Udo Kuckartz und der Objektiven Hermeneutik nach Ulrich Oevermann ausgewertet. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden qualitativ-empirischen Studie zeigen, dass Interkulturalität und interkulturelle Kompetenz innerhalb des Organisationskontextes vom Führungspersonal unterschiedlich ausgelegt und gehandhabt werden. Aus dem empirischen Material wird in Fallanalysen und -vergleichen eine qualitative Typologie mit vier kulturbezogenen Grundorientierungen herausgearbeitet.

This book introduces into the current global ethics debate models of humanism developed in classical Chinese traditions, which have not yet been comprehensively presented to Western scholarship or integrated into the framework of global discourses on social ethics and morality. It creates new paradigms for an understanding of humanism that meets the demands of our time. It begins by presenting European descriptions and critical assessments of this discourse, and then moves to an exploration of humanistic ideas shaped through historical developments in Asia, with a focus on the Chinese tradition. In this sense, the book is written from a transcivilizational perspective. The methods used in the research transcend---that is, surpass and overcome---the rigid, isolating, and essentialist concept of civilization. At the same time, the book points to the possibility of transformation through the exchange of knowledge and ideas between different civilizations. Within this framework, the book starts from the assumption that the ontology of civilizations and cultures is not based on immutable substances, but on the relations between different factors that constitute them as categories. The transcivilizational perspective rooted in transcultural dialogues between philosophies that originated in different cultures and civilizations is particularly valuable because of the globalized world in which we live today. This means that the problems that affect people in different parts of the world and the issues that are embedded in different geopolitical and developmental frameworks also affect all of humanity. This book is of particular interest to scholars and students of global ethics, globalization, Asian philosophy and Sinology.

This volume offers a cross-section of a good fifteen years of research in the sociology of technology and innovation at the Department of Sociology of Technology headed by Werner Rammert at the TU Berlin. All contributions in this volume were initiated or discussed there and thus bear in a certain sense a'Berlin signature'- not in the sense of a clearly delimited scientific school, but rather in the form of an open discussion group with different, but mutually related focal points. The Berlin Key, which gives it its title, imposes on all its users the program of action objectified in its mechanism:'User, if you want to take the key back to yourself after unlocking the door and go your way, you must lock the door again first. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes sind in der einen oder anderen Weise von zwei Begriffen aus dem Arsenal der soziologischen Systemtheorie Niklas Luhmanns und speziell seiner Organisationssoziologie inspiriert: dem Begriff der Grenzstelle und dem Begriff des Grenzsystems. Mit dem Begriff der Grenzstelle werden Abgesandte von Organisationen bezeichnet, die im Dienste von deren Zwecken und Bestandsinteressen auf eine relevante Gruppe von Nichtmitgliedern einwirken sollen, also etwa als Verkäufer auf Kunden oder als Pressesprecher auf Journalisten, und Grenzsysteme sind die aus diesem Anlass gebildeten Interaktionen, also etwa das Verkaufsgespräch oder die Pressekonferenz. Die Aufsätze behandeln unter anderem die Grenzstellen des Gesprächsleiters in der polizeilichen Vernehmung, des Diplomaten, des Verkäufers in seiner Nebenrolle als Aggressionsobjekt wütender Kunden, und zu den behandelten Grenzsystemen gehören Interaktionen wie Wohnungsbesichtigung und Vernehmung, Rettungseinsatz und Gerichtsverfahren.

Dieser Sammelband vereint Beiträge aus unterschiedlichen Bereichen der Kulturpolitikforschung. Impulsgebend für den Band war das Forschungsprojekt „Agonistische Kulturpolitik (AGONART) – Fallstudien zur konfliktiven Transformation von Kulturstandorten“. Dieses verstand sich als interdisziplinärer Beitrag zwischen qualitativ-empirischer Grundlagenforschung in Politikwissenschaft (mit Schwerpunkt auf Kulturpolitik) und politischer Theorie (mit Schwerpunkt auf Konflikttheorie bzw. agonistischer Demokratietheorie). Das Buch regt somit zu einer wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit Kulturpolitik(forschung) in Österreich, dem deutschsprachigen Raum und darüber hinaus an.
